Message to Our Members

The last time the contiguous United States experienced a total solar eclipse was 1979. Do you remember it? If you haven’t heard by now, another one will happen on Monday, Aug. 21, and much of Nebraska is in the prime viewing area. This month, NOVA will explore eclipse science and NET is hosting PBS KIDS family events at Homestead National Monument in Beatrice Aug. 19-21. NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory astronomer and Ready Jet Go! advisor Dr. Amy Mainzer, as well as Bill Nye the Science Guy, will share educational materials and advice for safe viewing as the shadow of the total solar eclipse moves over our state. (See pages 20-21 for the schedule.) NET is also a partner in presenting nearly a dozen events across the state where you can preview The Vietnam War, an 18-hour film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick that premieres Sunday, Sept. 17. You’ll find a complete schedule on page 19, as well as at netNebraska.org/vietnam. It took Burns and his team 10 years to collect never-before-seen interviews and film to tell the complicated story. NET is also commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War with a Nebraska Stories program about veterans and others from our state who were affected.

Summer is slipping away, signaling the start of football season and our interactive Big Red Wrap-Up show. This month, NET is proud to present Tom Osborne: A Legacy Beyond the Game, a candid interview with the coaching legend, whose impact on Nebraska and its young people goes far beyond the football field. Also in August, you can support NET and get tickets to see some great shows! The Texas Tenors perform with the Omaha Symphony; teen virtuoso Ethan Bortnick is on stage in Scottsbluff, Lincoln and Holdrege; and the classic band Mannhiem Steamroller will be in Grand Island and Omaha. You can be proud that your generous contributions make it possible for NET to be part of events across the state – and offer the television and radio programs that enrich your life. Thank You!

Assistant General Manager, Development & Marketing Proud NET Member

To celebrate Nebraska’s 150th birthday, NET is featuring a series of Nebraska 150 History Moments. Watch for this television spot about center pivot irrigation, as well as others throughout the year. Nebraska 150 History Moments on NET are produced with support from Humanities Nebraska.

NEBRASKA 15O HISTORY MOMENT

center pivot irrigation

In the late 1940s, Columbus native Frank Zybach invented a new type of irrigation system, the center pivot. Although it showed enough promise to get him a patent, the invention wasn’t ready for mass production. It worked great for crops such as sugar beets and alfalfa, but not for tall corn plants. Zybach teamed up with Columbus car dealer A.E. Trowbridge, and together they improved the design, eventually licensing the patent to Robert Daugherty, the owner of a small company called Valley Manufacturing. The partnership would revolutionize agriculture, not just in Nebraska, but around the world. Because of local innovation and vast stores of ground water in the High Plains aquifer system, Nebraska has risen to be a world leader in ground water development and management.

Pilster Bequest Supports Education Longtime educator and Omaha Public Schools principal Esther Pilster provided NET with a sizeable bequest to sustain its statewide educational programs in perpetuity. She believed in and trusted public television and was a proponent of education to solve problems. A bequest from the Esther and Raleigh Pilster Foundation will provide funds to continue NET’s work to meet the needs of learners of all ages and to help enrich lives in the future. Legacy bequests, like Esther’s, provide the opportunity to promote the importance of education for the next generation of Nebraskans. Esther watched NET’s Nebraska Stories and was interested in documentaries about Nebraska – particularly history from the western part of the state where she was active with the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center at Chadron State College. After teacher training at Peru State College, Esther completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. She began teaching in one-room schools in Gage County and also taught in Neligh, Seward and Chadron. She served as the first principal of the new Boyd Elementary School in Omaha where she retired after 21 years. For her work in the community, the Esther Pilster Park in Omaha was named for her in 1997.

Bequests Become Your Legacy NET offers many ways to incorporate charitable giving into your estate planning—and we can help you decide which type of gift is right for you. Planned and legacy giving through NET is an excellent way to establish a charitable legacy that supports something you care passionately about, while helping you realize significant financial and tax benefits. Donors leave bequests to NET because they have confidence we will fulfill their charitable intentions and manage their resources wisely. A bequest is a wonderful way to ensure that the charitable causes which are important to you and your family continue to be supported beyond your lifetime. Visit netNebraska.org/giftplanning or contact NET John Knape • Director of Major & Planned Giving 402-470-6351 • jknape@netNebraska.org 22

The mission of NET is to enrich lives and engage minds by connecting communities and celebrating Nebraska with services that educate and enlighten.

Television • Radio Learning Services • Technology Services

If you’ve made the choice to discontinue your cable service, you’ll still be able to watch PBS programming on NET (and other traditional broadcast networks) free over-the-air. But, to watch without a cable box, you’ll need an antenna. The first thing you may want to consider is an HD antenna. It’s the least expensive and simplest solution for watching broadcast television. An HD antenna is basically the modern-day version of the rabbit ears you might remember on your childhood television set. With an HD antenna, your channel selection depends a lot on where you live, as well as your line of sight to the broadcast location. A non-amplified antenna picks up signals across a range of about 20 miles and is ideal for people in urban areas, who tend to live close to broadcast towers. Suburbanites and rural citizens may prefer amplified antennas, which pick up signals over a broader range of about 50 miles. Over-the-air, all four NET channels will be grouped under the same channel number. On a television with digital capabilities, for example, you may find NET at 12.1, NET WORLD at 12.2, NET CREATE at 12.3 and NET PBS KIDS at 12.4. Questions? Call our NET HELP Desk at 800-698-3426 weekdays from 7:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. CT.
