APRIL 2019 1

Message to Our Members Finally, spring is here! It’s one of nature’s greatest performances and we are celebrating the change from winter to spring with an allnew, three-part television and multi-platform event from NATURE – American Spring LIVE. Witness the change of seasons in real time on three consecutive nights April 29 - May 1 at 7 p.m. CT on NET and Facebook. Beyond the broadcast, we’re encouraging you to attend American Spring LIVE community events and become citizen scientists who join researchers on an adventure to investigate how organisms respond to the change of seasons. Learn to identify birds, monitor monarch larva, count the number of bees that visit backyard flowers, track lilacs to see how they respond to environmental change or measure the quality of air. And, our NATURE – American Spring LIVE partners are planning family events across Nebraska. Visit netNebraska.org/ springlive to find an event near you and get more information on becoming a citizen scientist! Each of the three episodes has a central theme chosen to reveal how spring triggers extraordinary biological change.

Tentative live locations include California’s Sequoia National Park and Point Reyes National Seashore, Florida’s Everglades, the Eastern shore of Virginia, a sheep farm in Maine, a black bear den in rural Western Maryland, and Texas’s Bracken Cave and Gulf Coast. All of the episodes will be available for streaming the day after the broadcast at pbs.org/nature and on PBS apps. On April 25, Nebraska Stories will showcase the state’s premiere springtime event – the ancient seasonal migration of Sandhill Cranes. Writer Doreen Pfost has spent more than a decade on the Platte River connecting with the wildlife and people who live in the watershed. With help from aerial spotters and former colleagues at Rowe Sanctuary near Gibbon, she’s hoping to catch a glimpse of the rare and endangered Whooping Crane. Enjoy all nature has to offer this spring!

WATERSHED

STORIES OF PEOPLE CONNECTED BY WATER.

PBS is sharing NET’s 360-degree Watershed video series with stations and viewers around the country. Watershed explores the Greater Platte River Basins, focusing on how water resources are allocated upstream and downstream for agriculture and industry, drinking water, recreation and wildlife. Available on both the PBS website and on social media, the online series offers reflections from people who live and work in the watershed, including scientists, conservationists, farmers, ranchers, ditch riders, microbrewers, restaurateurs, a pro snowboarder and a writer. 16

Be a Citizen Scientist for this Nationwide Event Spring is one of nature’s greatest performances – a time of rebirth, renewed energy and dramatic transformations. Nature: American Spring LIVE presents the change from winter to spring and you can be a part of this multiplatform event as a citizen scientist. Along with researchers, you can investigate how organisms right here in Nebraska respond to the change of seasons. We are partnering with organizations on a variety of citizen science projects and events, including Celebrate Urban Birds and Bird Cams projects, The Great Sunflower Project, The Monarch Larva Monitoring Project and Track-a-Lilac. In addition to live broadcasts from Yosemite National Park, the Nature: American Spring LIVE television program will feature ecosystems from the Rockies to the Everglades and from inner-city parks to remote wilderness preserves.

Couple Says Preserving NET’s Future is Simple Every morning when their alarm goes off, Barb and Ben Rader begin their day with news from Morning Edition. When the day is coming to a close, they prepare their evening meal listening to more news from All Things Considered. And, they record many of their favorite NET television programs, including Masterpiece and documentaries, and watch them when they have time.

They have made an additional commitment to NET by becoming members of the Friends of the Future Society and including the network in their planned giving. “It was not a difficult process. We have a category in our will that allocates a percentage of our charity contribution to various places that matter to us, and a portion will go to the NET Foundation,” Barb said.

The rest of the day, the retired couple keeps busy with friends, church choir, tennis, reading, research, music and traveling. When they are ‘on the go’ Barbara often listens to radio on the NET Nebraska app. “We even listened to the app on my phone when we were on a trip to Argentina,” she explained.

Several years ago, Barb prepared a presentation about the history of NET for a study group. She found the history of the network to be exciting, and was impressed with leadership by former NET general manager Jack McBride, former program director Ron Hull and state legislator Terry Carpenter. “They thrust educational television in Nebraska into existence and led it to be successful across the country,” she said.

The Raders have supported NET’s radio and television services since they moved to Nebraska from Montana in 1967, when Ben took a position as history professor at the University of NebraskaLincoln. “There was no question. NET is something we are devoted to, and we knew it needed our support.”

“Now we want NET to perpetuate into the future and we know that isn’t going to happen unless people like us step up,” Barb added.

Wills Are Simple, Flexible and Versatile If writing a will seems too time-consuming or difficult, remember that it is an important way to extend your love and generosity to family and friends, and an excellent way to support NET’s mission. A simple, flexible and versatile way to ensure that future generations of Nebraskans can enjoy the gift of public media is by naming NET in your will or living trust, known as a charitable bequest. Bequests allow you to make larger gifts than might be possible during your lifetime. Plus, gifts through a will are flexible and can change as your circumstances change. If you die without a will, the transfer of your assets may be very different from what you wished. Unfortunately, family members, friends and charities you want to remember may not be included.
