CIVILIZ ATIONS AN EPIC 9- PART SERIES

Message to Our Members Did you know the Nebraska National Forest at Halsey is the largest hand-planted forest in America, covering nearly 142,000 acres of land in Thomas, Dawes, Blaine and Sioux counties? As we celebrate spring, trees and Nebraska’s own Arbor Day holiday in April, NET needs your help to grow support for the radio programs you enjoy every day. Listen during the week of April 5-12 to make a gift to NET. On television, you won’t want to miss the epic 9-part series Civilizations. It’s a stunningly beautiful program that explores the power of art from the earliest civilizations to the present. You’ll travel the globe, visiting cultural landmarks such as the great mosques of Istanbul, the ancient cities of Mesoamerica, the Buddhist caves of Ajanta in India and the Aztecs’ Templo Mayor in modern Mexico City. Many NET members have asked about the new season of Doc Martin. Acorn TV, the program distributor that holds the rights to Doc Martin and many other British programs, has not yet released the season to America’s public television stations. We hope to have more information from Acorn TV in the fall.

In February, NET General Manager Mark Leonard and I traveled with NET Board Member Ann Finkner of Lincoln and NET Commission Vice Chair Patty Kircher of Omaha to Washington, D.C., for the APTS (America’s Public Television Stations) Public Media Summit. In addition to meeting with colleagues and community leaders to discuss public media’s future, we met with all five members of Nebraska’s Congressional delegation. We were pleased to hear positive feedback about NET’s work and our value to Nebraska in several areas – including providing families, children and teachers free access to educational materials on websites such as Nebraska Studies, Nebraska Virtual Capitol and the NET Virtual Learning Library, powered by PBS LearningMedia. Our delegation also spoke about how NET’s gavel-to-gavel coverage of the legislature encourages civic literacy and leadership, and why our work in the area of public safety is important for Nebraskans in rural and urban areas. We appreciate your investment in NET. You can enjoy all we have to offer, knowing that it’s possible because you support our mission.

CIVILIZ ATIONS PREMIERING

Tuesday, April 17 7 p.m. CT on NET 2

New research shows the best time to prune living branches on deciduous shade trees is late spring and early summer.

WAKE UP

YOUR GARDEN

A perennial favorite for more than 65 years!

PREMIERES

Thursday, April 5 7 p.m. CT on NET

Host Kim Todd and the Backyard Farmer experts return for a new season!

This series is a co-production of NET Television and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension. Supported in part by AseraCare Hospice, Campbell’s Nurseries and Garden Centers, Nebraska Arborists Association, Nebraska Nursery and Landscape Association and Nebraska811.

Ancient people carved on cave walls and decorated simple utensils. Early Greeks created finely painted vessels and monumental sculptures. Inspired by British historian Kenneth Clark’s landmark Civilisation that aired in 1969, the new Civilizations series explores the role art plays in the development of civilizations throughout the world and across the span of human existence.

Kids Catch on to Coding Computers power our phones, watches, microwaves and even our cars using a set of instructions (like a recipe) called coding. In fact, almost anything powered by electricity uses code.

During a recent event, parents turned into students as they worked through “coding” instructions for making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and performing a simple dance.

In schools, coding is becoming a new form of literacy, along with a pathway to future careers in fields such as computer science and software engineering.

Meanwhile, Pontious explained how technology in her classroom is a tool, not a toy. “Digital learning is very important because it’s going to set kids up for success in the future,” she said.

At Oakdale Elementary in Omaha, teacher Allison Pontious partnered with NET to develop a series of Family Learning Workshops to introduce coding and the coding app, PBS KIDS ScratchJr, to families in Westside Community Schools. With the app, kids can create their own interactive stories and games featuring their favorite PBS KIDS characters. “We need our kids to know about computer sciences and how to manipulate technology so that they can learn for the future,” she said.

As the director of professional learning for Westside Community Schools, and a parent to a kindergartner and a first grader, Greg Betts sees benefits for families and students who are engaged in coding. “As a dad, I’ve learned a lot with PBS Kids ScratchJr. Sequencing is very important, following directions exactly is very important. The opportunity to learn along with my son and daughter has been really fun,” he said.

Huebner Pays It Forward Dr. Robin Huebner of Stanton describes living on a farm as a dream come true. Originally from the East Coast, she was born in Boston, grew up in Indiana and went to school at University of Delaware. She moved to Nebraska 33 years ago and practiced clinical psychology in Norfolk before moving to a farm where she boarded her horse. Now retired, she enjoys her rural life immensely. Huebner also enjoys NET and decided it was the right thing to do to name Nebraska’s public media network a beneficiary in her will. “This is a form of paying back and paying forward. I’ve enjoyed NET many hours every week and have just loved it and appreciated it so much that I wanted to provide the same opportunity for those that come after me,” she explained. She said her radio is permanently set to NET as she enjoys classical music and the NPR interview program Fresh Air. Like so many NET fans, Huebner is a lifelong learner. She listens to NET radio programs such as Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! and enjoys cooking, gardening and travel shows on NET television’s Create channel, as well as NET’s original productions including Nebraska Stories. “There is a foundation of truth and balance that I value in NET and I want to help make this available to everyone in Nebraska,” she added.

Direct Your Assets to the People and Causes You Care About Most If writing a will seems too time-consuming or difficult, remember that it is an important way to extend your love and generosity to family and friends, and an excellent way to support NET’s mission. A simple, flexible and versatile way to ensure that future generations of Nebraskans can enjoy the gift of public media is by naming NET in your will or living trust, known as a charitable bequest. Bequests allow you to make larger gifts than might be possible during your lifetime. In addition, gifts through a will are flexible and can change as your circumstances change. If you die without a will, the transfer of your assets may be very different than what you wished. Unfortunately, family members, friends and charities you want to remember may not be included. Visit netNebraska.org/giftplanning for more information, including a potential scenario for you to consider. John Knape Director of Major & Planned Giving 402-470-6351 jknape@netNebraska.org
