SEPTEMBER 2017 1

Message to Our Members

September is the month we get back into our routines. Vacations have come and gone and kids are returning to school. As it seems to happen every year, the relaxing days of summer fly by too quickly. Time marches on and before long, it will be Christmas! I know, I hear you. (Say it isn’t so!) But, it’s okay, really. I can say this because here at NET we believe every day is an opportunity to learn something new, make a friend or share a kind word with someone who needs it. I often hear from members who tell me what a difference NET makes in their lives. I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of an organization that serves Nebraskans by telling inspirational, informative and enlightening stories every day. Many staff members, including myself, have had the pleasure of meeting viewers and listeners as we traveled the state for our “On the Road with NET” adventures – a new initiative for us. We racked up more than 1,600 miles, visited 14 towns, hosted 39 events and made many new friends. You’ll find our annual report in this issue (beginning on page 15) where we provide highlights about our fiscal year that ended June 30. It’s been a great year with many accolades for NET and,

with a 65 percent increase in engagement on our NET Nebraska Facebook page, we know that you are interested in the stories we tell. Also in September, you are invited to attend a preview screening of the Ken Burns and Lynn Novick documentary, The Vietnam War. The much-anticipated 10-part series previews Sunday, Sept. 17 on NET. Visit netNebraska.org/Vietnam for a list of more than a dozen screening events around the state and links to NET programs about the war. We’ve had another year of continued growth in membership support and are pleased to report that we recorded the highest number of members in 10 years. Thank YOU so much for your dependable investment in NET. Every dollar truly makes a difference! Thank you!

Debbie Hamlett Assistant General Manager, Development & Marketing Proud NET Member

ON THE COVER THE VIETNAM WAR PREMIERING

Sunday, Sept. 17 7 p.m. CT on NET

2

This film is not an answer, but a set of questions about what happened. – Ken Burns

PREMIERING Monday, Sept. 11 at 9 p.m. CT on NET NET is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War with a special Nebraska Stories episode about veterans and others impacted by the Vietnam War. Nebraska Stories: Vietnam tells the inspiring story of Nebraska veterans who take a oneday honor flight trip to Washington, D.C., to visit the Vietnam War Memorial and offers reflections from the only female veteran on the flight. The special episode also tells the story of Norfolk native Claude Van Andel whose death while serving in the war helped inspire the national monument; the story of a Vietnamese family who evaded pirates, ocean storms and a dangerous refugee camp before finding a new home in Nebraska; and the story of a Vietnam veteran turned anti-war activist turned social justice advocate who spent much of his career fighting for the rights of the disenfranchised. University of Nebraska-Lincoln graduate music student Wataru Niimori is composing an original score for Nebraska Stories: Vietnam.

The Vietnam War is locally supported in part by Humanities Nebraska, AARP Nebraska and Nebraska Medicine.

The Vietnam War features testimony from nearly 100 witnesses, including Americans who fought in the war, others who opposed it, as well as Vietnamese combatants and civilians from both the winning and losing sides. The epic 18-hour film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick took 10 years to produce and reveals a war that ripped the country apart in ways we hadn’t seen since the Civil War. netNebraska.org/vietnam 3

ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017

netNebraska.org

1

NET’s annual report is an opportunity for us to reflect on our accomplishments over the past year, and share them with friends and supporters. Inside, you will see some of these highlights and stories, as well as an overview of NET’s financial performance.

Mark Leonard

I am very pleased to report that NET has concluded another fiscal year in strong financial shape, with no operating deficit. This was achieved during a year of reduced funding from the State of Nebraska, and without any reduction in services or programming. Revenue from membership and underwriting continued a three-year growth trend. In March, NET crested the 25,000 member mark for the first time in 10 years, despite increased competition for audience from cable, satellite and online viewership. When we face reductions in support from the State of Nebraska, the University of Nebraska or the federal government, it is increased private support that keeps NET’s programming and services strong. Our industry continues to change at a breakneck pace, yet the values of public broadcasting provide an important reference point as we navigate these changes. Free, universal access to quality over-the-air broadcast programming continues to be our “North Star.” Yes, we will adapt and innovate with mobile, over the top, streaming and on-demand, but broadcasting is far from a dated or dying technology. You will be hearing more from us about this in the coming year, but rest assured, NET is committed to not just maintaining, but strengthening our over-the-air radio and television broadcast services.

SALUTES OUR SESQUICENTENNIAL

NET celebrated Nebraska’s 150th birthday by producing and broadcasting a series of 60 Nebraska 150 History Moment television and online spots to highlight the state’s history, culture, people and geography, plus creations unique to Nebraska, such as center pivot irrigation systems, Kool-Aid and the Reuben sandwich. As Nebraska’s storyteller, NET takes pride in documenting our great state. It’s something we’ve been doing for decades. netNebraska.org/150

I listen to NET Radio because of the variety and because it offers a nice mix of reality like the news but also fun things like Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me. I like the variety, and I like that it’s as pure, I think, as radio can be.

Cheryl Aubery Hastings

1,687 MILES 14 TOWNS 39 EVENTS

CONNECTING NEBRASKA NET’s goals include creating diverse programming and events that enrich lives, address needs and concerns, and empower you to build thriving communities. So, we’ve taken NET On the Road to communities across the state. In fourteen towns, we’ve screened local stories from our popular Nebraska Stories series, taped Backyard Farmer episodes, hosted educational PBS KIDS events for families, heard from community leaders at Town Talks, produced live radio broadcasts about local arts on Friday LIVE and, most importantly, connected with you! NET is your public media station. It belongs to you. We are honored to be your trusted storyteller and your window to the world.

There are so many wonderful people and stories in Nebraska. You guys do a great job of bringing those stories to life.

TELLING LOCAL STORIES Tucked away in the 77,000 square miles that comprise Nebraska’s 93 counties are the local stories that connect our shared history and rich culture – and it’s NET’s mission to tell them. Award-winning NET documentaries, Nebraska Stories, Big Red Wrap-Up, Backyard Farmer and radio Signature Stories add a “Great Plains” perspective to the PBS and NPR programming you enjoy. Plus, the NET Sports team delivers championship local sports coverage. Each year, more than half of all Nebraskans watch NET – a testament to the trust you place in our network. And, to keep you safe, we collaborate with emergency agencies to relay critical news and weather. Our engineers maintain sites that provide local weather alerts and we supply resources for a newly developed Nationwide Public Safety Broadband Network.

It’s a great help to Nebraskans that NET provides live video of the state Legislature’s committee hearings. Omaha World-Herald

SMALL INVESTMENTS BENEFIT NET Ninety-six-year-old Bob Frank still makes the drive from Hastings to Lincoln to visit his daughter. He’s an active, life-long learner whose small investments in certificates of deposit paid off over time and became seed money for a donation to NET. He set up a charitable gift annuity as a rewarding way to support NET and receives a fixed payment in return for the remainder of his lifetime. “I am a believer in NET and their programs, and I want to help them continue to furnish people with good programs,” Bob said. NET SALUTES THE NEBRASKA SESQUICENTENNIAL To celebrate Nebraska’s 150th birthday, NET is featuring a series of Nebraska 150 History Moments. Watch for this television spot about Carhenge, as well as others throughout the year.

NEBRASKA 15O HISTORY MOMENT

CARHENGE

Active in Hastings, he handles mint and peach sales for the Lions Club and wouldn’t miss socializing with his friends when they meet up for lunch.

Like monoliths from ancient times, a circle of vintage vehicles near Alliance rises from the ground on the western edge of the Sandhills. John Reinders created this replica of England’s Stonehenge as a memorial to his father.

Born and raised in Harvard, Bob served in the U.S. Army and farmed before joining the Naval Ammunition Depot in various administrative positions. He also worked at the Meat Animal Research Center in Clay Center until he retired in 1981.

A henge is simply upright objects arranged in a circle. Reinders knew wood and stone henges dating from the Neolithic and Bronze ages had already been built. So, why not one made of cars? Today, Carhenge draws tourists from all over the globe.
