Did You Know?

Home of Little Women: Louisa May Alcott’s Orchard House

As a Civil War army nurse, Alcott comforted dying soldiers and helped doctors perform amputations. She wrote about her experiences in a journal and in letters to her family, and in 1863, she published a wildly popular fictionalized account called Hospital Sketches.

Sunday, May 20 6:30 p.m. CT on NET Some consider Orchard House not just the setting of Little Women, but a character all its own. Peek beyond the pages of the book as a beloved piece of American history is preserved.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT NET did what Nebraska’s public media network does best when the Ken Burns’ documentary The Vietnam War aired last fall. In one of our most meaningful and emotional community engagement projects ever, more than 3,000 people attended a dozen statewide screening and discussion events, stirring emotions ranging from anger to tears.

“I killed people. It haunts me every day. It is just part of my life now and I have learned to accept it.” – Fremont event attendee 18

NET TACKLES TOUGH TOPICS Our news reporting on sex trafficking educated Nebraskans about a crime that often goes unnoticed. This ugly industry preys on women and children using force, fraud and coercion. The television documentary Sold for Sex: Trafficking in Nebraska examined how trafficking happens, as well as the fight to stop it. The follow-up program Sold for Sex: Survivor Stories revealed the powerful stories of three victims, and will be shared with audiences of other public media stations around the nation. On radio, Signature Stories news reports looked at training for professionals, why people become victims and research from experts. NET also developed online and social media resources to reach younger audiences and those who want to dig deeper. As part of our effort to increase community awareness, NET presented material about sex trafficking to Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) education courses, churches and state child welfare workers. We also shared it with dozens of other organizations working against sex trafficking.

Did You Know? In March, Sold for Sex: Trafficking in Nebraska surpassed 500,000 views on NET’s YouTube Channel – it is NET’s most viewed video ever.

SERVED LIKE A GIRL Female veterans struggling with PTSD, divorce, serious illness and military sexual abuse, compete for the crown of Ms. Veteran America. Balancing beauty and brawn, they use the transformational competition to regain their identities and the way of life they sacrificed in foreign wars.

NET Passport Access Motivates Young Donor’s Gift “My uncle served in Vietnam, so when Ken Burns’ The Vietnam War came out, I wanted to watch the new documentary to educate myself about his experience,” Nathan explained. NET Passport gave him the opportunity to watch the 10-part series as his schedule allowed. Jensen, a senior mechanical engineering student at the University of NebraskaLincoln, made a commitment to support NET and is setting the pace for his own generation.

Nathan Jensen grew up watching Sesame Street when he was young and later enjoyed science programs like NOVA and History Detectives with his family around the television set in Omaha. Now he watches his favorite programs on his laptop via NET Passport, an online viewing library boasting more than 1,500 episodes of PBS and NET shows which are available anytime.

“I feel like I am giving back to something that helped to educate me, and I want to help others, it feels good,” Nathan explained about his recent contribution. After graduation this month, Jensen plans to return to UNL and begin his master’s degree. He hopes his studies will lead him to a future career with NASA. “I had an internship with them last year at the Ames Research Center near San Francisco. My dream would be to work for NASA after I graduate,” he added.

There are many ways to make a gift to support NET and preserve public broadcasting for today and generations to come – and you can benefit as well! 1. IRA Rollover - If you are 70 ½ or older, you can avoid extra income this year by making a gift from your IRA. 2. Gift of Securities - Avoid capital gains taxes by giving older stock (with a low basis) that has appreciated in the rising market. 3. Life Insurance - Eliminate an old or unneeded life insurance policy by making a gift of the cash balance. 4. Gifts to Individuals & NET - A testamentary charitable remainder unitrust (CRUT) is created in your will. Individuals you select receive annual payments at a rate and length you choose. When the trust ends, the remaining funds become part of the NET Foundation. 5. Charitable Bequest - Make a gift for the future that costs you nothing today. Provide for your loved ones first, and then NET with a bequest made in your will or trust. Visit netNebraska.org/giftplanning for more information about these and other giving options.
