MARCH 2018 1

Message to Our Members This month we celebrate women who made their mark in history and changed the world. From the Nebraska woman who became the first Native American doctor, to the first women’s cross country air race, to a woman who led the fight for racial and labor justice for farmworkers – tune in and learn how women contribute to our society. If you’re hearing bird calls on your morning commute, you’re tuned to BirdNote, NET radio’s newest feature. It’s a cool way to learn about bird songs and the environment. Did you know songbirds perform using a specialized voice box called a syrinx? According to Cornell University’s Bird Academy website, the syrinx makes it possible for the Northern Cardinal to sweep through more notes than are on a piano keyboard in just a tenth of a second. While I am “singing” the praises of nature, we’re excited to premiere a new documentary called Rivers of Nebraska featuring beautiful views and stories from the Niobrara and Platte rivers. March is also the time you’ll see one of our largest television membership drives. On-air pledge drives are the most costeffective way for NET to attract a broad pool of new members. Our car donation program and Passport streaming service are examples of how we are growing other new sources of revenue. We hear from many folks who love our pledge drives because they enjoy the great music programs we feature. And, we hear from others who don’t understand why we broadcast pledge drives.

First, THANK YOU for being an NET member. You understand it takes dependable community support to keep this statewide service strong. We take great pride in our ability to deliver relevant content to the state’s rural areas, as well as its more populated ones, and we promise that your investment makes a difference! Your donations ensure NET can provide national content through NPR and PBS, as well as produce news with a local perspective; documentaries that dig deep to explore the people, places and history of Nebraska; and educational content that serves Nebraska’s most vulnerable population – our children. You won’t want to miss the new PBS documentary Mister Rogers: It’s You I Like, premiering March 6 on NET. It’s the heartwarming story of a man who simply wanted to help children. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood series. Rogers’ birthday is March 20, and it’s Won’t You Be My Neighbor? Day in Nebraska! Visit netNebraska.org/facebook to share memories of the show and tell us what you’ll do on that day to celebrate.

P.S. NET PBS KIDS celebrates its first birthday this month! The 24/7 channel is available free over-the-air with a simple antenna.
