Message to Our Members I heard the most incredible story the other day on one of my favorite NET radio programs – Fresh Air. If you’re like me, you have driveway moments all the time, and this was definitely one of them. It was an interview with conservation photographer Paul Nicklen. He was describing the sea animals that he photographs in the Arctic and Antarctica. The most fascinating part of the story for me was learning about a sea creature I didn’t even know existed. It’s a narwhal (or narwhale) with a long, pointy horn that is actually a tooth. The narwhal is the sea unicorn! Google Fresh Air and Paul Nicklen to look up the story. It’s definitely worth a listen. On television this month, follow the journey of photographer Joel Sartore and see his inspiring images of endangered species in the new film series RARE: Creatures of the Photo Ark. Did you know the Cross River gorilla is the rarest of all apes? You’ll see one, along with bizarre insects and other creatures. We’re especially proud to air this series since Joel makes his home in Nebraska and we think of him as one of our own.

We’re really excited to have received a small grant to produce three indepth radio Signature Stories that profile habitats in Nebraska and the endangered species that live there – piping plovers, interior least terns, river otters, pallid sturgeons, whooping cranes, American burying beetles, the swift fox and the salt creek tiger beetle. The stories also examine strategies designed by scientists, conservation groups and private landowners to care for both the habitat and the species. And, as a companion to the profiles, we’ll create 360-degree, immersive video to virtually transport people into these wild spaces. I encourage you to explore ways to experience 360 video – like YouTube or Facebook. It’s an eye-opening, mind bending experience that can alter the way you think about things. (And another thing to Google!) No matter what you’re up to in July, NET brings you a month of adventure and takes you around the world! Thank you for your continued support. It makes all of this and so much more possible.

ward-winning photographer Joel Sartore’s hallmarks are a sense of humor and a Midwestern work ethic. He specializes in documenting endangered species and landscapes around the world, but he’s always happy to return to his home and family in Lincoln. Sartore is the founder of the Photo Ark, a 25-year documentary project to save species and habitat. Both he and the project are the subjects of the new three-part PBS documentary RARE: Creatures of the Photo Ark, airing later in July on NET. (See story below.)

The show is powered by Sartore’s ability to capture indelible images, his uncanny eye and dry wit. It follows him as he travels the world to photograph some of the most endangered and rarest creatures left on Earth. Sartore started the Photo Ark in 2005 at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo. His photos of that zoo’s three-banded southern armadillo and Indian peafowl (peacock) were included in a series of cover photos on last April’s National Geographic magazine. Photos of a Malayan tiger from Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and a snowy owl from Raptor Recovery Nebraska were also featured.

Joel Sartore tells Fresh Air’s Terry Gross that presenting the animals in the studio, rather than in nature, gives them equal importance in the eye of the viewer. In a radio interview from NET’s studios last spring, he discussed his photography book, The Photo Ark. Listen to the podcast at netNebraska.org/freshair

Renowned National Geographic photographer and Nebraska resident Joel Sartore is documenting some of the world’s most exotic and beautiful creatures – every one of them at risk of extinction. RARE: Creatures of the Photo Ark takes you across the globe to Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and Oceania to share Sartore’s adventures. His ultimate goal is to photograph 12,000 species and create worldwide awareness about the problem of extinction. RARE: Creatures of the Photo Ark is part of the PBS Summer of Adventure. (See more on pages 16-17.) (Repeats Saturdays, July 22 & 29 and Aug. 5 at 7 p.m. CT on NET)

NET is Nebraska’s largest classroom, our largest stage and a trusted window to the world. Every day, we fulfill our essential mission to NET television viewers – providing free over-the-air programming to engaged, intelligent citizens, not simply consumers. NET is Nebraska’s first public television broadcast service and includes PBS KIDS programming during the day, and PBS and award-winning, locally produced programming throughout the evening.

NET WORLD carries live coverage of the Nebraska Unicameral, and other local, news and public affairs programming. NET CREATE features how-to, cooking, travel and lifestyle series. And, NET PBS KIDS offers trusted children’s programming. Over-the-air, all four NET channels will be grouped under the same channel number. On a television with digital capabilities, for example, you may find NET at 12.1, NET WORLD at 12.2, NET CREATE at 12.3 and NET PBS KIDS at 12.4.

Are You Having Trouble Locating Our Television Channels? Call our NET HELP Desk at 800-698-3426 weekdays from 7:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. CT. netNebraska.org/tvchannels

Two programs focusing on the economy and business will be part of NET’s News/Jazz HD-2 radio schedule beginning Saturday, July 1. First, at 10 a.m. CT, Planet Money explains the economy in an engaging way, with playful storytelling and award- winning journalism. The Planet Money team includes Robert Smith, Jacob Goldstein, Stacey Vanek Smith, Noel King, Ailsa Chang and Kenny Malone.

At 10:30 a.m. CT, host Guy Raz talks to innovators, entrepreneurs and idealists about the challenging journeys they took to build their iconic companies on How I Built This. Featured guests include the founders of Lyft, Patagonia, Zappos, Spanx, Samuel Adams, Instagram and more. If you don’t have an HD radio, you can listen to the shows on the NET Radio App. Both programs also have podcasts available if you’d like to preview past episodes, or catch up on the series. Planet Money and How I Built This replace Best of Car Talk on NET’s Saturday HD-2 radio schedule. 14

MONDAY-FRIDAY

Defining the Plains A new NET audio podcast is exploring the central Plains one story at a time. The PlainStory explores people, places, culture, history and life in the Heartland, deepening the sense of place residents already feel and providing a portrait of the region for those who live outside it. NET’s Ariana Brocious is the producer of the podcast. With insightful interviews and compelling storytelling, episodes of The PlainStory will highlight different aspects of agriculture and local environments, as well as community and the arts. Stories in the first season include topics such as growing indigenous crops, an unusual fossil find, new life for historic theaters and the diversity among old and new settlers to Nebraska.

Colby launched The Woman’s Tribune in 1883, and for 26 years, provided Midwest readers with news about the suffrage movement and other policies affecting women and children. IRA Distribution

is Easy Way to Support NET

“We’ve been married 59 years and PBS has been an important part of our married and family life. We’ve always found the programs stimulating and satisfying,” said NET member Sanford “Sandy” Smith of Omaha. Sandy and his wife Pat recently made a generous gift to NET through an Individual Retirement Account rollover. Having the distribution sent directly from the IRA to NET simplified the process and assured the gift would not be considered part of their income. The Smith’s gift will help sustain the types of television programs the couple values most.

Pat and Sandy Smith

The Smiths watch PBS NewsHour every chance they get and enjoy the special news reports and in-depth documentaries from FRONTLINE – a top-rated television news and current affairs series.     “We also like Nature and NOVA and similar programs that make history and science come alive,” said Pat, whose school teacher mother often admonished, “If you stop learning, you might as well be six feet under.” The couple also watched Sesame Street along with their four children.

“Especially in this political climate, it is nice to have reasoned and factual information that includes multiple voices,” Pat said about her reliance on NET. “We’re also impressed by programs that take on challenging topics,” she added.

Sandy and Pat met in Washington, D.C., when they were both working there. He is from Southern California and she is from New Jersey. They left the coasts behind and moved to the middle of the country in 1975 for Sandy’s job and stayed – they love Omaha.

While IRAs are excellent vehicles for accumulating assets for retirement, many people are surprised to learn they may not be the best option to pass an inheritance to loved ones.

If you’ve thought about contributing to NET, consider passing IRA assets to our organization and giving less heavily taxed assets to your family members. As a nonprofit organization, NET is tax-exempt, so we can wisely use 100 percent of your IRA contribution.

When anyone other than your spouse is named as your IRA beneficiary, it is exposed to heavy taxation, leaving less for your heirs than you might have hoped. Upon your death, the income tax bill can take as much as 39.6 percent of the IRA’s value, and that percentage could be higher if your estate is subject to estate taxes. 22
