Message to Our Members “Often when you think you are at the end of something, you are at the beginning of something else.” – Fred Rogers And so, here we are at the beginning of a fresh New Year. Welcome 2018! NET is eager to serve you with exciting new educational and entertaining content. Whether you’re young at heart or young in age, NET is the place to discover and understand the world around you. Here’s a quick look at just some of what’s coming your way this year – The Nebraska Legislature convenes in January and NET will bring you gavel-togavel coverage for the 39th year. The NET news series Speaking of Nebraska returns for a second season next month with thoughtprovoking television interviews about legislative issues as well as other topics important to our state.

by NET 15 years ago, nebraskastudies.org filled a gap for teachers who didn’t have a Nebraska history textbook. With 4,000 images, 375 pages of learning resource tools and more than 150 videos – the popular site gets almost a million clicks each year! The new PBS KIDS series Pinkalicious & Peterrific debuts in February. Based on the popular children’s books, it’s designed to help preschool-age children explore their creative side. Research shows that connecting with the arts strengthens children’s cognitive and emotional skills, and leads to higher academic performance.

Sunday, Jan. 14 at 8 p.m. CT on NET

2

NET’s popular series returns Thursday nights with a brand new season of smart storytelling about the characters, places and history that make our state unique.

Watch for these and other stories in the season’s first three episodes Jan. 11 – An Old Market poet delivers catharsis in the form of a poem; Lincoln’s famous Robber’s Cave taps into the craft brewing craze; Germans from Russia celebrate common heritage by cooking; an ecologist teaches teachers about Sandhills wildlife; plus cowboy tales about surviving a raging mid-century blizzard. Jan. 18 – A musician and singer reflects on his stint on NBC’s The Voice; Husker volleyball standouts build classrooms for a Nicaraguan school; a David City artist turns memories of rural Nebraska into nationally revered paintings; and a woman with spina bifida pursues photography as an art and a profession.

Jan. 25 – A painter turns art into paintamation; “Johnny Salsa” delivers jars of his grandma’s spicy recipe by bike; a craftsman uses traditional tools to create modern saddles; a sci-fi buff converts an old Lyons theater into a futuristic film set; and golfers tee it up with antique irons and woods made from hickory and handforged steel.

NEBRASKA STORIES SEASON 9 PREMIERE

Thursday, Jan. 11 8 p.m. CT on NET netNebraska.org/nebraskastories

Passion, power, fury and motherhood intertwine as Victoria manages her young family and her royal duties. Although she appears to have it all under control, Victoria has a difficult time bonding with her baby, the men in her life are treating her like an invalid and Albert is spending time with an attractive woman. See how the young queen rises to political and romantic challenges – at home, in her country and abroad. JANUARY 2018 3

DESIGNATE NET AS YOUR

BENEFICIARY Life insurance is a valuable tool to protect your loved ones, but later in life your family requirements may change. Rather than cancelling the insurance policy, why not use it to help advance the mission of NET? Naming NET as the beneficiary of your life insurance policy allows you to make a substantial gift at a relatively low cost, while still offering flexibility should you need to change your plans. You can review and adjust beneficiary designations anytime. And, the form is entirely separate from your will – making this approach an easy way to give. If you choose, you can even designate NET as the beneficiary for a certain percentage of your life insurance policy’s death benefit. To assign your gift to NET, you need to complete a beneficiary designation form. The form is available either from your insurance company or your agent. For more information, visit netNebraska.org/giftplanning or contact NET. John Knape Director of Major & Planned Giving 402-470-6351 jknape@netNebraska.org
