NOVEMBER 2018 1

Message to Our Members Thanksgiving brings a heightened awareness for all we are thankful for – family, friends and health, just to name a few.

This month we celebrate the newest addition to our children’s schedule. Let’s Go Luna! is a brilliant new series introducing kids to diverse cultures and countries around the world. The main character is the moon which of course, looks the same no matter where you view the nighttime sky! Luna teaches children about local languages, music and other daily routines. I was fortunate to grow up in a military family where I was exposed to a lot of different perspectives and places. With Let’s Go Luna! and other programs on NET, your family can travel and meet new people every day! Public media is one of the things that says “home” to me. We’re incredibly lucky (and thankful) in Nebraska to have one of the best public media stations in the country. I bet you feel the same no

If you’re traveling for the holidays, you can stream your favorite programs on NET Passport. You can also download our free NET Nebraska app to hear our two radio channels, plus catch up on Friday LIVE, Harvest Public Media stories, All About Books and one of my favorites – NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts. Our largest membership campaign starts Thanksgiving weekend, so be sure to tune in for wonderful new music programs. One of my favorites is Celtic Woman: Ancient Land, continuing the tradition of telling stories of land, love and dancing through song. It’s a feast for the ears and the eyes, too, with beautiful flyover footage of Ireland and the historic Johnstown Castle.

Wednesday, Nov. 21 & Friday, Nov. 23 9 a.m. CT on NET In this new PBS KIDS series, Leo the wombat, Carmen the butterfly and Andy the frog travel around the world to learn about culture with their friend, Luna the moon. LET’S GO LUNA! encourages kids ages 4-7 to explore and appreciate cultures worldwide while building global citizenship and social skills.

On Veterans Day, we honor all of America’s veterans for their dedicated and loyal service to our country – both living veterans who served or are serving the armed forces, and those who lost their lives during times of war. NET has produced several television programs about veterans and the issues they face, including the impact of homecoming and how war changes lives. Other stories from veterans highlight how both men and women helped win World War II at home and abroad, and a radio series shares stories of homesickness, combat and sacrifice.

In December 1944, the Tulsamerican was badly damaged during a fight with the German Air Force over enemy territory. Although the crew attempted an emergency landing, the B-24 Liberator bomber fell from the sky and disappeared beneath the waves of the Adriatic Sea. Seven crew members survived, but three men and the aircraft were never found – until now.

GIVING

Becomes the Perfect Gift When a Seward couple decided not to exchange gifts with each other at the holidays, Susan and Alex Kufeldt agreed on another option. “We decided that in lieu of gifts, we would increase our giving to our favorite nonprofits and do it during the holiday season, Susan said. The Kufeldts have been faithful supporters of NET for more than 35 years, and avid watchers of PBS since the mid-1970s when they were stationed in the Azores. “We watched various programs via the Armed Forces Radio & Television Service, Alex explained. After returning to the states, they faithfully watched PBS via the Hampton Roads Educational Telecommunications Association in eastern Virginia.

DOES YOUR COMPANY

Now back in their home state, the Kufeldts tune into both radio and television from NET. “We know that we can get factual, informative programming from NET and that we can enjoy it all across Nebraska, Susan said. She explained that their children grew up listening and watching, too. “I am sure it enlarged their world, helping them develop into knowledgeable, well informed adults with an appreciation of the arts, people and cultures, and a desire to make the world a better place. “NET is a big part of our lives and we give so it can continue for us and all Nebraskans, Alex added.
