HARRY BATES Born into a motorsport family, Harry’s father and 4 times Australian Rally Champion, Neal Bates, introduced him to driving from a very young age. Harry started his driving career as a 12 year old, competing in local motorkhanas on both gravel and tarmac. Aged 18, Harry began competing in rallying, and in only his second ever rally, gained a podium at the 2014 Rally Narooma, as well as being the winning two wheel drive competitor. During 2015, Harry competed in his first Australian Championship round at his home event, the

National Capital Rally, in a standard Toyota Corolla. He and new co-driver, John McCarthy, managed an astonishing third place on debut. He followed this form up with more strong results in the two wheel drive Corolla throughout the remainder of 2015. For 2016, Harry and co-driver John stepped up to an all-wheel drive Toyota Corolla S2000. Success came immediately, with a heat win at the first round of the Australian Rally Championship and three podiums from five events. The pair fell agonisingly short of being Australian Champions in their first attempt at

the series, after a puncture on the final day of the final rally dropped them out of contention. 2017 saw Harry claim his first ARC event win, becoming the youngest person in history to win a round of the championship. He and McCarthy followed this up with another win at the National Capital Rally two months later. The pairing have since debuted a Toyota Yaris AP4 (built by Neal Bates Motorsport in Canberra) in competition, claiming victory at the first round of the 2018 Australian Rally Championship in Ballarat.

MOLLY TAYLOR In 2016, Molly Taylor became the first female and youngest ever driver to win the Australian Rally Championship. But it was certainly no overnight success. If pedigree is anything to go by, Molly has it in spades – her mother Coral is a four-time Australian Rally Champion co-driver and her father owns and runs a rally school. Molly gained her rally licence while still at school, and started in motorkhanas. In 2009 she moved to the UK and embarked on an international rally career that would span seven years and see her

compete in the British Rally Championship, win an FIA World Rally Championship Academy scholarship to compete in the 2011 World Rally Championship. She also competed in the European and Junior World Rally Championships. Along the way she became the British Ladies Rally Champion, won the FIA European Ladies Rally Championship, was the number one international female rally driver in the World Rally Rankings at one stage and became the first female to achieve a podium position in the Junior WRC’s history at Rally Finland.

In 2015 she returned to the Australian Rally Championship and finished second behind Citroen Factory Driver and three-time champion Eli Evans. In 2016, Molly joined the Subaru do Motorsport and Les Walkden Rallying team to lead their domestic return to rally.

MIKE YOUNG Mike Young started rallying at 18 years old, his first event being the 2011 Rally of New Zealand in his Dad’s 1989 Nissan March Superturbo, followed by three Malaysian Rally Championship events with the Pennzoil Rally team. Co-driver Malcolm Read joined Young for the 2013 Malaysian Rally and the partnership had immediate results – second overall and first of the APRC registered drivers to finish. Later that year in the Thailand Rally, Read used his mechanical skills at the end of a stage to repair a broken wheel and the rear brakes of the Toyota, to keep the pair in the event. On the final day they were rewarded with the FIA Asia Cup, the only time it’s been won in a two-wheel drive car and Young the youngest driver ever to win it. In 2014 Young and Read returned to the APRC with third overall in

Rally New Caledonia and second overall at the China Rally, to finish the year second overall in the FIA Drivers Championship. Cusco Racing decided Young was ready to move up to four-wheel drive and turbo power for the 2015 APRC, providing the kiwi with a Group N Subaru Impreza. With support from Dunlop and Sri Lanka’s EZY Racing, Young on his home event in New Zealand lost out pm second place by 1.9 seconds, however, did finish second at the next event in Queensland Australia. At the Rally Hokkaido in Japan, Young rewarded the team with second overall followed by a third place at the China Rally, to once again finish second overall in the driver’s championship. In July 2015, Young was awarded with first prize and top honours from the Elite Motorsport Academy. In 2016 he netted

three thirds’ and a second place at the final round in India. Young drove a hybrid powered BYD Quin, the first time a vehicle of this type had ever been entered in an international FIA rally. Sixth place and winning the inaugural APRC New Energy Cup for BYD was a definite highlight, as was competing in the ERC Estonia Rally with his Indian team-mate Sanjay Takale where they finished second in class. Cusco Racing also provided an opportunity to drive at the Ark Rally, a Japanese National Rally Championship event where Young finished sixth overall.

ELI EVANS Eli Evans is a three time Australian Rally Champion, taking out the title in 2012, 2013 and 2015 with long time co-driver Glen Weston. The pair broke Possum Bourne’s record of nine straight wins on their way to the 2013 title, and claimed the manufactures’ title for Honda in 2013.

In 2015, Evans competed and won for Citroen in the Australian Rally Championship and went on to contest the 2016 Chinese Rally Championship for DS Team China. In 2017, Evans Motorsport built the Mini Cooper AP4, and Evans debuted the car at the National Capital Rally.

With the retirement of Weston at the end of 2017, Evans recruited Ben Searcy to the co-driver seat for the 2018 Australian Rally Championship. Evans/Searcy recently took out the Make Smoking History Forest Rally in April 2018.

YUYA SUMIYAMA Yuya Sumiyama won the Asia Cup in 2010, again in 2012 and is looking for a 3rd title in 2014. Sumiyama has driven a variety of cars including Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 10’s and Subaru Impreza. STEVE GLENNEY Steve Glenney is widely regarded as the fastest and most versatile driver in Australian Motorsport. Steve has recorded wins at National and International level in Circuit Racing and Rallying (both gravel and tarmac), including the pinnacle of Australian Rallying, Targa Tasmania. Equally comfortable on a racetrack or in the forest, no other driver (privateer or factory backed) has achieved comparable success in these forms of motor racing in Australia. Steve began his motorsport career competing in motorkhanas and hillclimbs in 2001 in his road

car, a HSV Commodore, before swapping into a Nissan Skyline GTR for his first tarmac rally (the 2002 Rally Tasmania). Steve’s first major result came the following year with a 2nd outright placing in Targa Tasmania. In 2004 Steve turned his attention to the Australian Rally Championship (ARC), entering and winning the inaugural Subaru RS Challenge (one make series). Steve teamed up with his current co-driver and Smoothline cocontributor Bernie Webb the following year to take out the ARC Privateer’s championship. Steve’s first outright ARC win

came in the 2006 Rally South Australia, before his attention was turned back to the tarmac. A string of outright victories came in the next few years including the 2008 Rally Tasmania, Targa Tasmania and Adelaide Hills Rally, 2009 Targa Wrest Point and 2010 Rally Tasmania. Since then Steve has expanded his involvement to include circuit racing, where he has won multiple rounds of the Australian Production Car Championship and the 2010 World Time Attack Challenge.

ADRIAN COPPIN Adrian initially started out in circuit racing but was quickly lured to the greater challenge of rally. In 2009 in his first rally event, Adrian took class honours and progressed quickly, securing second in class at his international debut at the Australian round of the World Rally Championship just two years later.

Adrian has driven for the likes of Ford Australia and Citroen Australia, winning the Australian 1600 Championship for Ford in 2013 and helping Citroen to the manufacturers championship in their debut season in 2014. He also competed in the European Rally Championship at Rally Croatia in 2013 and Rally Germany in 2014.

After an off season in 2017 with family and work commitments, Adrian returned to the ARC in 2018, campaigning first the Peugeot AP4 before switching to the Skoda R5 with Perthbased operation Race Torque Engineering.

In 2017 Lewis competed in some rounds of the Australian Rally Championship and was very competitive in the 2WD class. At the end of 2017 Lewis stepped up into an all-wheel drive Toyota Corolla S2000 Car.
