and establishing good gut health, there doesn’t appear to be ‘one’ approach that suits everyone. For our September weight balance feature, we have included a range of perspectives but it’s by no means a complete picture. It’s also not a ‘how to lose weight edition’ as such but I’m sure you will be guided (if you listen within), to the people, places and things that may assist you along the way with what you require.

ver the last six and a half years of creating this magazine, I have come across many different opinions with regards to ‘weight balance’. I have been judged at times for not having the whole magazine representing ‘one way’ or one regime. At times people contact us and say that their way is right, or the most ethical and there is quite a level of aggression that goes with this. I wonder what impact this would have on people and our planet? The interesting thing for me is that over about a 15-year period I have met and interviewed people who have transformed their lives, and weight balance was a ‘by-product’ of this and they were also contributing to the planet in a multitude of ways. While many believe in taking an holistic approach; addressing the mind, body and spirit and moving towards whole foods

This month we are also delighted to share naturopath extraordinaire, Leisa Wheeler’s insights and wisdom (p12-13) and her story will resonate with many who have had challenges for whatever reason with their health and then felt fat, fatigued and forgotten. I

t goes without saying fresh organic food straight from the garden is the best way to get the optimum nutritional value out of your food. If you are not able to grow all your own fruit and vegetables, then the best place to go is to the organic farmers’ markets as you can be assured of freshness; or growing your own fruit and vegetables is even better even if you live in an apartment. Most of the ingredients in this recipe can be grown in pots. The most important thing to have available to you is the sun and water after you choose the right soil and the right pots that will allow for growth. This recipe is one of our favourites that is alkaline forming in the body. There is a balance of good fats, protein, vitamins, and minerals. I have chosen parsley to share some of its amazing health benefits. Parsley – apart from its amazing culinary uses, parsley is a good source of minerals like potassium,

calcium, manganese, iron, and magnesium, rich in many antioxidants including vitamin-A, beta-carotene, vitamin-C, vitamin-E, zea-xanthin, lutein, and cryptoxanthin. Parsley is an excellent source of vitamin-K and folates and rich in many essential vitamins. The University of Missouri scientists found that parsley can actually inhibit cancer-cell growth. Animals that were given apigenin, a compound abundant in parsley (and in celery), boosted their resistance to developing cancerous tumors. Serves 4 Ingredients: 1 or 2 large bunches of fresh flat leaf parsley 1 small bunch of mint ½ cup quinoa 8 shallots 1 small Lebanese cucumber 2 large roma tomatoes or 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved 2 large avocados Method: Wash all vegetables. Soak quinoa for 1 hour in hot water, drain, rinse and squeeze out excess water. Finely chop parsley and mint. Seed and dice cucumber into 1 cm cubes. Cut tomatoes into 4, seed and dice into 1 cm cubes. Trim shallots and finely slice. Cut avocado into half, seed and peel – slice into cubes. Place all ingredients into a bowl except the avocado. Blend dressing, pour into salad mix adding the avocado – toss gently. Dressing: ½ cup cold pressed olive oil Juice and rind of 2 lemons 2 tbsp white wine vinegar 1 garlic clove crushed Pinch Celtic or Himalayan salt 1 tsp agave 2 tsp mustard (optional) Place ingredients in a small container with lid and shake well.

What is magical, and what is natural? Part 2 – The Mind: Interview with Don Tolman WORDS ANDREW DUDEK

I

s there, indeed should there, be a difference, and are you even curious? The extraordinary Don Tolman is possessed of an uncanny, exquisite and enchanting ability to blur our lines between the magical and the natural; if joining the dots is your “thing”, Cowboy Don may well satiate your wildest curiosities! I’m at a 2015, 3-day Base Camp for Health, in the Gold Coast. A young lady in the audience is (randomly) asked to write 25 completely unrelated words on an A4 sheet of paper. Each word is numbered, and she has been given a blue piece of paper to write on (blue just happens to be Don’s “projected colour” – turns out “we each have our own unique colour”, but that’s another story…). Don is handed the paper. He gazes at it, but for not longer than three seconds. Instantly, the sheet is handed back to a table of “judges” (myself included). Then, Don performs what he describes as a normal “feat of the

mind”, which every person in the room is taught to emulate – he has “photographed” the piece of paper, and then “projects” the image, at a distance, onto a white “screen” (it could even be clouds, but in this case, it’s the back wall of the auditorium). “Distance magnifies our vision”, Don explains. That said, and with his piercing eyes locked, glazed upon the back wall (at least 30 metres away), Don “reads” out loud the entire list of words, flawlessly reciting (“recalling”) every word on that list – forwards, backwards, and randomly! “We call this: Memory at the Speed of Sight!” he solemnly nods and tells the gasping audience. Attendees shake their heads in disbelief. However, as Don explains, “this is a most natural function of our brain’s ability – our ancestors all knew how to do this… and now I’m just trying to bring it back! “We are a book of life, and a book of knowledge, because our bodies (and our brains) contain the records, and the abilities, of all of our ancestors.

“And what a precious thing, to know which plant foods can be used to download the mental software, and activate mental ‘apps’, to where you can see and hear these things…” And when Don talks about the smorgasbord of available and specific foods for the brain/nervous system, coupled with the seductive “Doctrine of Food Signatures”, the magical and natural converge once again. “Pine nuts, for example, will decalcify the pineal gland. Walnuts are ‘brain food’ not only because of their wrinkled brain-like appearance, shells, and two hemispheres, but because of their Omega-3 fat concentration.” In fact, not less than thirteen brain/ nervous system specific plants are catalogued and detailed by Don Tolman in the remediation and integration of structural, functional and degenerative disorders of the brain and nervous system! Tomato and herb pasta with cherry tomatoes RECIPE LUISA TOALDO, Chef and Conscious Eating expert

Pasta dough: 4 cups plain flour 4 eggs 4 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp water 2 tbsp tomato paste Method: Create a mound of flour on a clean bench space. Make a well in the centre of the flour with steep sides. Break the eggs into a bowl and whisk in the water, tomato paste and olive oil. Pour in the centre of the flour well and gently incorporate the flour into the well, pulling from the side. As the flour incorporates, the dough will start to come together. If you are worried about the sides collapsing, use this method but in a large mixing bowl. When the dough has come together, begin to knead it until smooth and elastic, approximately 8-10 minutes. If you have a mixer with a dough hook, allow it to knead for about the same time.

After kneading, wrap the dough tightly in cling film and refrigerate for about 15 minutes. This allows the dough to relax and soften. Divide the dough into four smaller portions to roll out. Flatten the dough out and dust lightly with flour. Roll in the pasta machine on the widest setting until it is smooth. To keep rolling the dough, fold in half after each roll through and continue to roll through adjusting to the next thinner setting, until at about the 6 or 7 setting. To store until cut, ensure the sheets are well floured and lay to the side or layer on a baking sheet until needed. Roll the pasta sheets through the

spaghetti or fettucine setting as preferred. To cut the sheets by hand, fold them in half and into half again and cut strips width ways with a sharp knife to form fettucine. Unfold and set to the side. To serve the dish: Bring a large pot of salted water to the boil, add the pasta and cook for about 6-8 minutes until al dente. The thicker the pasta is rolled the longer it will take to cook. If unsure, start with 4 minutes and check again after 2 minutes. Drain the pasta and toss with a healthy coat of olive oil. Top with fresh basil and cherry tomatoes and shavings of parmesan cheese. If desired, you can fry a little garlic in a pan, add the cherry tomatoes to soften and then toss the pasta through. Enjoy! SINCE THEN I HAVE BEEN IN AWE OF HER DECADES OF EXPERTISE AS A NATUROPATH AND RETREAT LEADER. WHAT I WASN’T EXPECTING WAS LEISA’S KIND AND UNPRETENTIOUS WAY OF BEING, WHEN I RECENTLY MET UP WITH HER IN BRISBANE. Vanessa: I love the respectful way you approach the topics of weight and health. Can you please share a bit about your journey and the things that transformed your life? Leisa: My major health challenges started over fifteen years ago when I had an accident at Tae Kwon Do training and broke my femur. I needed an operation to insert a titanium rod through the centre of the bone from knee to hip. The trauma of the accident and the subsequent operation and recovery threw me into severe adrenal insufficiency which led to the development of hypothyroidism. I suffered with severe fatigue, weight gain and depression, my hair fell out in clumps, I was always freezing cold and unable to focus on 12

anything for more than a few minutes at a time. At my worst, I was bedridden and completely unable to function. Prior to the accident I was extremely fit and well, so the change was very dramatic. Even though it was initially suspected that I had adrenal and thyroid issues, my blood tests came back within the normal range, so my doctor told me there was nothing wrong with my glands. It took two years of searching, several practitioners in both the medical and alternative fields, and thousands of dollars, before I found an integrated doctor who did saliva hormone testing to assess my adrenal function, and also did more in-depth thyroid testing that had not been performed before. The tests showed I had severe adrenal fatigue and an autoimmune thyroid disease. Getting a proper diagnosis was an

incredible relief. From there, I used small amounts of bio-identical replacement hormone which supported my body, while the underlying issues were healed. Even though I had a healthy lifestyle, I was still under a lot of stress which had impeded my healing. Knowing exactly what was wrong gave me the information I needed to be able to make changes and recover fully. Vanessa: What are the biggest weight loss myths and what would you like to share instead? Leisa: There is a very insidious myth in popular culture that the answer to weight loss is to “eat less and exercise more”. But for someone with a metabolic disorder such as hypothyroidism, this advice is useless at best, and dangerous at worst. When someone is suffering with a thyroid disorder or other hormonal or

metabolic imbalance, it is very difficult to lose weight, even with the most perfect diet and optimal exercise. The metabolic issues need to be healed first, and then a person’s weight will start to come back into the balance that is right for them. Trying to starve will slow the metabolism further, when what is really required is good nourishment as a foundation of healing. Vanessa: Is there a ‘preferred’ food regime that is more conducive to losing weight? Leisa: I have watched people heal on all types of diets and health regimes. The one thing that they all have in common is the use of wholefoods. Whether a person goes raw vegan, paleo or macrobiotic, it is the nourishment of wholefoods and the elimination of fake, processed and junk foods that is the key to healing, not necessarily the individual regime itself. A naturopath can design a protocol that is going to target an individual’s condition, but losing weight should not be the focus of the program, but rather a side effect of healing the disorder. Food is the foundation of health and any regime that supports the body in the process of healing is going to assist in a person being able to return to a healthy weight. Vanessa: What about the emotional aspects of weight gain? Leisa: I believe with any physical ailment there is always an emotional component to address. I’ve found with thyroid disorders there can be an inability to speak up, express true feelings and so words “get stuck in the throat”. To say that everyone with a thyroid disorder has these issues would be a gross generalisation, but we know from epigenetic research that our emotions can influence our biochemistry, so exploring this area can be a pathway to healing. With adrenal exhaustion there are often feelings of not being good enough, leading to perfectionism and the tendency to be a workaholic. Low self-esteem can lead to comfort eating, and trauma can manifest in the body as layers of “protection”. If a person is demonstrating a symptom of imbalance in their natural healthy function through gaining excess weight, the healing of it demands an exploration of more than just the physical self. Healing wounds and traumas, shifting limiting beliefs, and removing negative self-talk opens a person up to a state

where they are able to appreciate that their body is doing the very best it can to remain healthy in circumstances that may be far from ideal. Losing weight can be about finding balance in life, and can mean changing both the internal and external environments to improve wellbeing. Vanessa: What are your views about exercise? Leisa: When you are suffering from fatigue, exercise can be difficult, if not almost impossible. One of the keys to recovery is to exercise to tolerance levels, which means that exercise has a positive effect, rather than a negative one. If you exercise hard and then it takes a week to get over it, you have done too much and are harming yourself and preventing a full recovery. Alternatively, if you are too fatigued to exercise at all, that is not going to be supporting your health. Gentle movement is needed to aid in recovery, until more intense exercise is able to be introduced. Exercise is important, but it is also important that it be a joy, not a chore. When you are full of energy, you naturally want to move your body – it feels good to run, jump, dance, swim, or cycle. Once the health disorders are healed, exercise becomes something to look forward to, rather than avoid. Vanessa: What about spirituality and healing? Leisa: I definitely see a spiritual component to healing and have been very privileged to witness healings that don’t conform to conventional medical wisdom. This has given me a deep faith in the ability of the body to heal itself given the right tools and environment. The key is to figure out what tools and environment any one person needs and it will always be unique and individual. All chronic illness gives a person the opportunity to explore deeper levels of being, examining their life and beliefs,

and connecting with something greater than themselves. I think one of the greatest misunderstandings in the healing world is there is always an answer to illness. If someone has a chronic disorder or passes from a disease, the belief is that if they only ate better, meditated more, prayed harder, fought more fiercely, used less chemicals etc, they would have healed. But we don’t know what spiritual path one has chosen, or what life lessons there may be in illness for both the sufferer and the people around them. I think it is important to use every tool we can to give ourselves the best opportunity of healing, but we also have to know that there is a higher purpose that we may not be privy to. Compassion, understanding and humility assist in these areas. Vanessa: What does an ‘average’ day in your life look like now? Leisa: Maintaining health has not been an easy path since my initial accident. I was well for a long period of time, but had a relapse a couple of years ago when I went through a period of severe stress. For me, being healthy is all about balance. I love what I do, so I have a tendency to work too hard and neglect the practises such as meditation and relaxation time. They have to be deliberately scheduled in, and when I do that, I notice a huge difference. I start my day by taking my dog for a walk on the beach to watch the sun rise. I find that there is something quite primal about watching the sun come up that renews my energy. Eating well is important, so I take time out to make sure that I have good quality organic food and I eat a mainly plant-based diet. Gratitude is something I practise daily and getting back to nature and away from my computer is vital. My husband and I have purchased an acreage that we will be moving onto soon and I’m looking forward to growing our own food, working with the cycles of nature, and having a horse again, which is one of my big passions in life. completely agree with the statement of one researcher, “unsweetening the world’s diet may be the key to reversing the obesity epidemic”. As a Naturopath, I strongly prefer to recommend natural sweetness over anything artificial for general wellbeing. However, which has the strongest influence on weight gain? Many people opt for sugar free versions in the hope of stabilising their weight, but many still battle weight gain. Artificial sweeteners encourage sugar consumption and increase sugar cravings. They alter our desire to eat. This is likely the opposite effect that the consumer would want. Just the thought of food, triggers a cascade of metabolic changes in the body. The gut prepares itself to receive some nutrient dense food. When our taste buds sense sweetness, our body then awaits calories and nutrients. Because you consumed food with limited calories and nutrients, the body knew it didn’t get what it needed, so it will try and send the signal again to eat, in anticipation of getting the calories and nutrients it needs for survival. It is this that can lead to eating other foods that can contribute to weight gain. It’s not just artificial sweeteners you need to be careful of if you are trying to lose weight. Most people are aware

that too much table sugar will make you put on fat, but what many do not know about is the effect fructose has. Table sugar, fruit and high fructose corn syrup, all contain fructose and once metabolised by the liver, can become stored as fat. The body does not process fructose the same way that it processes glucose, which is essential to every human cell. So should we opt for fruit to satisfy the sweet tooth? Possibly, but not too much. Fructose, is the sugar high in fruit. Fructose has been shown to contribute to leptin resistance. Leptin is the hormone in your body that helps to regulate energy by inhibiting hunger. So too much fruit may lead to overeating as you may still feel hungry because your body’s ability to allow leptin to work is reduced! Too many carbohydrates in the diet in general, even the good ones can contribute to weight gain. When we eat carbohydrates our body releases insulin, which reduces growth hormone. This balance tends to lead to a shift more favourable of fat storage. High insulin for too long a period of time can lead to your body not responding efficiently to insulin, making you more tired, unmotivated and foggy. These are well known factors that lead to eating more and moving less.

And what about the gut and weight? Inflammation of the gut is hugely underestimated in weight loss. Digestive disease is known to significantly alter inflammatory hormones. This imbalance has the potential to then alter the hormones that regulate blood sugar and impede weight loss and instead promote weight gain. Some promising research has demonstrated that some additives may affect the function of the gut. In many small studies subjects who were given different forms of additives showed a change in gut bacteria. They suspect that some additives alter the integrity of the mucosal protection that lines the gut, where the good bacteria reside. I am never an extremist in dietary changes, however, the typical Australian diet really does tend to lean too much towards sweetness, both natural and artificial. As we now know, it’s both that can contribute to weight gain and ill health. My recommendations are to get your sweetness boost from a small amount of natural whole fruit and starchy vegies. W

ith almost 2 in 3 Australians being overweight or obese, this is an increasing trend that seems unstoppable. There is around 1.5 million Australians living with type 2 diabetes, with its complications like cardiovascular disease, cancer, infections, etc, much of which is preventable with lifestyle changes. Most people, as well as doctors think that the reason why they are overweight is related to overeating and lack of exercise. From my own clinical experience, that is only true to a certain degree. Working as an emergency doctor in the past, I saw obese people coming to emergency departments with chest pains, heart failure, arthritis and other complications. I made the mistake of judging them, and thinking all that could be prevented by exercising more and eating less, until I realised that for someone who is overweight, this is actually a torture. There is such biochemical derangement, that makes things quite complicated. There are factors like genetics, stress, wrong food choices, feeding the wrong gut

flora, that creates the perfect storm for this obesity epidemic. One of the key factors is insulin resistance. This is as a consequence of eating “empty calories”, mostly from carbohydrates like sugar with very little nutrient density. Unfortunately our supermarkets are full of it. The aversion to fat created in the last 40 years, together with the introduction of fructose in foods has just consolidated the problem. For someone trying to lose weight, it is imperative to reduce their appetite through adequate amounts of fat and protein, which are essential building blocks to restore a healthy body. I personally think when you eat the right foods, there is no need to count calories and restrict amount, as your own body should signal when you need to stop eating. Biochemical markers like fasting glucose, fasting insulin, triglycerides, uric acid can be markers of insulin resistance. The main action of insulin is not to reduce glucose in the blood but to create reserves in fat getting your body ready for famine times. This is something that used to happen fairly regularly as

hunter-gatherers, where there were days when food was not readily available. Correcting zinc, iodine, vitamin D deficiencies and excess copper can be critical as well. There are a lot of diets out there that promote weight loss. If you are trying to lose weight, it is essential that your body is trained to burn fat. This is something that might take some time to get used to. As with everything else, you get good at it when you practise. Using certain fats that are easier to burn, and eating the right amount of protein is the key to success. This becomes a lifestyle. Symptoms like aches, pains, mood swings, insomnia and depression improve, as well as a reduction in weight generally happens. Energy improves, signalling the body when to start exercising which will potentiate the effects of healthy eating and reduce the risk of injury. O

ur body talks to us and shares our unconscious thoughts. Our body shape will change over the years and will be an external printout of the internal dialogue and beliefs that you have. When weight is held in the abdomen like the ‘beer belly’, this is stored anger and related to the solar plexus chakra. This chakra deals with confidence, personal power, and digestive problems. So the body will store adipose tissue (fat) when the person is feeling low selfconfidence and having power struggles. Quite often they won’t be able to digest life and therefore their weight will increase to ‘protect’ them. To assist this area wear a citrine crystal which aids these concerns and increase yellow foods such as lemon juice, pumpkin, squash and stone fruit. This will aid aspects of weight care. If weight is held around the buttocks

area this indicates the person is ‘gonna do it’ and sits on the fence; meaning never takes that step forward to action for themselves as it is safer. This area is linked to the root chakra which is about survival, self preservation and grounding. These people can have many ideas but don’t action and ground the ideas and so the body grounds them by holding on to weight. They will want to stay safe by ‘sitting on the fence’ as they don’t have to take responsibility. To assist this area it is important to actually move and do exercise, eat red coloured foods such as tomato and ensure they have plenty of water to move the ‘stuck’ energy. One area that is most discussed by women is the hip area. The hips are where our identity is stored. The hip chakra links to weight issues and relates to trusting the process of life. Weight in this area can come from very old experiences as a child and past lives where the person was told that they

were not good enough being themselves or maybe were executed for being themselves such as those that know they were a healer or witch. They internally don’t trust life’s process as they have forgotten they design their destiny. To assist this area it is important to plan and design your destiny to what you want. Set up goals, create vision boards and massage the area with a rose quartz crystal such as an egg shape. This area benefits with no wheat, sugar or dairy. Then the judgements and shame follow… Guilt and its related family members – blame, shame and regret – really have one job, and that is to distract you from what is true about you, and to stop you from perceiving what is actually possible in any moment. What if the guilt was just another way of stopping you from being you? What if there was another totally different choice available? Guilt is a monster we use against ourselves to make us believe we have no value, and stop us from being and recognising the gift that we actually are. Guilt can only occur when you are willing to judge and decide that you are doing something wrong. Judging you is actually an unkindness that stops you from being the caring towards yourself

– that exact same caring that is so valuable to you to be for others. Every one of those points of view distracts you from the joy and possibility that is available in your life, and it stops you from being a contribution out in the world! Giving up guilt not only expands your life, but the lives of everyone you touch. Saying goodbye to the guilt monster doesn’t have to be difficult. Here are two things you can do right now that can help you move out of guilt and into a different possibility: 1. ASK A QUESTION, HAVE GRATITUDE AND CHOOSE IN 10 SECOND INCREMENTS Ask yourself each day: What else is possible today? What am I grateful for? Universe show me something beautiful! What would I like to choose now? You have a choice to be happy, be sad, be upset, be joyful, to celebrate, to commiserate. You can choose anything for 10 seconds, and then you can choose something else for another 10 seconds, and then choose again.

Practise living your life in 10 second increments. There is no right or wrong choice. If the guilt monster comes up, give him 10 seconds, and then choose again! 2. STOP LOOKING TO THE PAST Guilt, blame, shame, and regret are all conditioned distracters we use against ourselves to stop us from seeing the beauty of ourselves. In every moment we do what we can, with what we have available to us. Choice always creates awareness, and awareness is our vehicle for growth. What you know now may not be what you knew then and going back to the past to judge yourself for the choices you made or didn’t make doesn’t allow you the freedom to choose today. W

eight loss is one of the most sought-after treatments in the western world. Our society has conceptualised a very specific perception of beauty, and in the quest to seize this ever-escaping concept, we are required to throw everything to the wind that stops us from fitting into a size 8. Personally, my German and Irish ancestors have set me far back in that rat race, but thankfully a steady appreciation and love for my own self sees that it’s a race that brings no reward, and inspires an unquenchable thirst on the way. When you think about weight, what comes to your mind? An urgency to lose it? A picture of how you think you should look? Guilt? What about health? There are a thousand reasons why we should worry about weight; the stress that it puts on the body is absolutely horrendous and so many preventable health issues are born from

obesity. But, there is too often a place in the person sitting in front of me, talking to me about how desperately they want to lose weight, which worries me more. There is a place of complete imbalance in mind to body to spirit, and the further apart this trifecta sits, the less rounded our capacity for health is. The reason many want to lose weight is completely aesthetic, and that itself as a catalyst for change has them chasing cheap, quick, and easy weight loss solutions that are never going to provide lasting or holistic benefit. In health, homeostasis is the word used to describe the physiological balance the body is constantly striving to seek and maintain. We are beings of fluctuation and change, in an environment of fluctuation and change, and we will always be fluctuating and changing. This is why homeostasis is something the body is constantly seeking; because that balance is

something that our body already knows is a fleeting stability. Despite this, its entire existence is set upon making sure that some type of balance is achieved so that we may see another day! So, what am I getting at here? The importance of prioritising healthy balance over an unrealistic, unhealthy perception of weight and body image. Balancing the body as a whole will bring balance in weight, but this requires a different call to action than wanting to just lose weight alone. It requires you to desire health and wellbeing, and to see weight loss as a consequent result. See your whole entire self and how beautiful you are. W

hether you are chronically constipated or you only get backed up when you travel, there’s no need to sit on the toilet and wonder why nothing comes out. Follow the steps in this Constipation Checklist and say goodbye to those tired, irritable, bloated and sluggish feelings forever! 1. WATER – Most people think they’re drinking enough water, but every time I ask people in my clinic how much water they drink I’m surprised to hear that 1 litre is the most common response. That’s simply not enough to properly hydrate our digestive system and stay ‘regular’. Aim for at least 2 litres of water each day – try starting your day with 2 big glasses of warm water and lemon juice to really wake things up! 2. FIBRE – Did you know there are two types of dietary fibre – insoluble and soluble? Insoluble fibre works like a brush for your insides to keep things moving through your colon. Soluble fibre acts like a gel to make things pass through your digestive system easier,

helping to soak up toxins along the way. If you’re constipated, the best sources of fibre are leafy greens and fruits, particularly papaya, sweet potato, broccoli, chia seeds and avocados. 3. PROBIOTICS – Good gut flora helps keep us regular. When the population of these beneficial bacteria is extremely low, our bodies must work overtime to process food. If you’ve ever taken antibiotics or medication that makes you constipated, it’s because they’re wiping out all the good bacteria. There is no such thing as “over-doing� it in the probiotics department. Take a supplement, drink kombucha or kefir, and eat sauerkraut or kimchee as recommended. 4. EXERCISE – One of the key risk factors for constipation is inactivity. If you sit at a desk all day and the couch all night, then your colon is going to take a leaf out of your book and take it easy too. Exercise delivers oxygenrich blood to the intestinal muscles, decreasing the time it takes food to move through the large intestine thus

limiting the amount of water absorbed from the stool into the body. 5. COLONICS – the quickest and most effective way to clear constipation is to get a colonic. This is a fantastic way to provide immediate relief from the backed-up, ‘headachey’, irritable feelings that go hand-in-hand with constipation. But although colonics will quickly get you back to normal, it’s important to address what caused the constipation in the first place (re-read items 1-4!) Can’t I just take a laxative I hear you ask? The short answer is NO! Laxatives can do major damage to your digestive tract and cause irregularity in the future by destroying your gut flora when you overuse them – even natural alternatives like Senna cause digestive problems and muscle weakness. do you have about your body?

W

hat kind of relationship do you currently have with your body? Do you begin your day by looking in the mirror and judging yourself, or have you got really good at ignoring it and pretending it doesn’t matter or exist? What would it be like to begin enjoying your body now, no matter what your weight, size, shape, age or fitness level? And what if that was also the key to being able to create changes with your body with far more ease than you ever thought possible? One of the things we realised very early on in Access Consciousness, is that anything you judge, you cannot change. You can stop old patterns and begin to enjoy your body by getting out of judgment. What if, by changing your perspective about your body, you could allow the space for change? Access Consciousness has a weekly internet radio show on Voice America Empowerment Network, and one of the topics we recently discussed was

how to create the body you desire, and addressed some of the unconscious, outdated and contradictory points of view we sometimes don’t even realise that we have taken on that stop us from creating changes with ease. We asked some different questions to help listeners create freedom in this area. The funny thing is, if we have had many lifetimes and many bodies, it is possible that we have made all kinds of decisions and judgments about the perfect body weight that doesn’t match with the kind of body we have right now. Our bodies have a consciousness and awareness of their own – they are also constantly giving us information that we often do not listen to, receive or that we misidentify. Often, the unwillingness to receive information from our bodies can lead to the sensations we refer to as ‘pain’ or ‘discomfort’. We are taught to look at our body as an enemy to force and fight into the shape or size we desire, and we buy crazy points of view like ‘no pain, no gain’ or ‘you need pain to gain’.

What if those points of view are working against you? How much pain are you using to create the gaining of weight you are choosing? What if you could talk to your body and ask it questions? T

his world is fixated on being thin, yet more and more people are getting fatter. What is going on here? How can we be so out of alignment with what we desire? There are so many issues at hand when addressing the problems with our weight, but the core issue that separates us from balancing our weight is our disconnection from who we really are. Instead, we are plugged into versions of ourselves that sabotage our thoughts and actions. We are meant to be conscious. We are meant to know what to eat, when to eat and how to eat, yet we don’t because we have become disconnected from this awareness. We act more like robots than conscious beings, operating from programs such as “I am not good enough” or “I don’t have enough.” This separates us from our higher

Conscious Living consciousness. In this separation we often use food to fill the void in various ways to suppress the feelings of lack. Some seek comfort in food to give them emotional support. Some reach for food to temper their anger and frustration. Those who have little passion or purpose in life can often use food as entertainment. Food is meant to be, first and foremost, fuel for the body to provide the nutrition and sustenance the body needs to meet its physical demands. We need to unplug from limiting beliefs and plug back into higher awareness if we want to bring our weight back into balance. I had a client who was out of balance with her weight. I

f you don’t have all the money you’d like and/or you are carrying extra weight on your body – the two things just might be related!!! A strange title for an article about weight balance – but money is about your body. You, the being, don’t use food, clothing, shelter, a car or a smart phone. Your body does! And bodies love fun, ease and pleasure. A happy body responds with youthful energy and appearance! Money follows fun, too! I have a confession to make – I have never held a 9-5 job in my life. I have had what many people would call a charmed life BUT… As a struggling uni student 35 years ago, I started my first business with no capital and no real plan. I had enthusiasm, though! I printed up some hand drawn flyers. I rented a hall. Seventy-five people showed up the first night and I made 3 times my weekly student allowance! That little business (6 hours per

week) ran for 6 years and brought me, in today’s terms, between $1-2,000 A WEEK. Since then I have had maybe 10-15 businesses in very different fields – some successful, some horrible, costly “failures”. So what? I just kept creating! I found the things that come easy to me, that other people apparently find hard, and I did them. What comes easily to you, that you are not valuing enough? There was a common thread – I had to do something I enjoyed, was enthusiastic about, and which gave me the freedom to do all the other things I loved doing. You see, at the age of 20, I knew enough about myself to know what I required on a daily basis to make my life worth living and keep me well and happy. I actually thought I wasn’t ‘strong’ or ‘consistent’ enough to be an employee for very long. I made a demand of myself that no matter what it took, I was going to set up my life to work for me.

What would work for you? What would be fun for you? Things I required and still require – plenty of time to exercise, walk, go to the beach, read. Write, draw, daydream. Time and money to study all the things I’m interested in. What would you like more time and money to do? Personal growth was and is vital to me. The sustainability of the planet. I’ve had two natural healing centres. What is vital to you? I knew I needed plenty of change – I get bored easily. W

hen we come from a space of pure love with regards to our human body that we have chosen in this lifetime, we totally transform everything. This includes: the food we choose, how much we exercise, the clothes we wear, how we feel about our bodies, what we do and how much reverence we hold for them. Some of you know that in my early 20s I experienced the severity of Anorexia Nervosa. I remember thinking at the time that my mind was a walking calculator full of calorie counts and obsession with what I would eat, when, what I had eaten, how I could get rid of it and basically anything I could do to control it. I was addicted to trying on clothes, weighing myself and the fear that if I relaxed for one moment, I would turn into an elephant. I joined a 12-step program to assist me in ‘handing my will and my life over to a higher power’ with regards to the

food, life and everything in between. I struggled with handing over the food and gained and lost weight so many times I lost count. When I had had some recovery from the ‘dis-ease’, that I now feel was an addiction to fear and control, I was able to let in a higher power to assist me in nourishing my being with higher vibrations. In doing so, I was able to really come into my body and tap into the higher wisdom that all my energetic centres contain. Where I would easily gain weight in the past, this changed to finding it far easier to maintain my weight, from a place of peace rather than fear. I used to think that I would be forever counting calories, watching my back and yo-yoing up and down the scale. However now the weight is not the bane of my existence. When I wrote ‘The Everyday Lightworker Bible’ last September it really brought

me into my body. I was 79 kilos at the time, but happiest I had ever been with how I looked. Shining the torch into my body with the assistance of the higher vibrational energies, that I discuss in the book, assisted me to feel any excess weight that wanted to be released. Along with it came the support and motivation from Spirit to exercise more and eat lighter foods. The excess just peeled away effortlessly. Instead of feeling naked, like I had at other times in my life, I felt more and more secure as I released the weight. Over the past few months, I have just hovered around 60 kilos and have not deprived myself or felt controlling about my weight at all. I have allowed Spirit to navigate me to the weight I am meant to sit at, at this time. Soul Reflections with body shape WORDS TONI REILLY

O

ur physicality is predetermined by what we come to learn in life. As a soul we selected the body shape, including all parts of it to be the perfect vehicle to assist us in overcoming the challenges we agreed to address in life. This might sound weird as a concept, but my extensive work with regression and the between life realm ensures these insights to me over and over again. French Canadian metaphysical researcher Lise Bourbeau shares incredible informative findings in her book Heal Your Wounds and Find Your True Self. If you are ready to explore what your body is telling you about who you really are you will find her undeniable explanations for why it is so hard to be yourself. The paradox is, we never realise that we are not being ourselves until we have an experience with death, love or health that rocks our world at the core and causes us to seek deeper meaning to our existence.

The shape, weight and appearance of our body provide a strong indication of our psyche. Lise Bourbeau refers to our life challenges as wounds. They are what determine our psychological behaviour and also our physiological appearance. The physical body is there for all the world to see, our psyche is not. Her research refers to these wounds as rejection, abandonment, humiliation, betrayal and injustice. If the time is right, you will recognise one or more of the remnants of these within your own behaviour. Carrying weight can be a defense mechanism to keep people at bay so that no one can get close to you, either physically or emotionally. It can nurture a safety net for your emotions to take a break. An example would be in the case of someone addressing humiliation, their body may develop a large bust that causes people to stare and while young it may be confronting and embarrassing but as life continues, and you become comfortable, and instead

see them as assets, is when you have overcome the purpose of having them in the first place. I was the opposite, born with an almost completely flat chest. I know now that rejection is one of my wounds and my practically non-existent bust line certainly amplified my inner worst fear of being rejected. I used to think no one would like me because I did not have boobs. Of course they did and I might add that my flat chest was my own deep insecurity, it was all encompassing as a teenager but I do recall that no one else was bothered by them at all. Changing perspective and appreciating your body as a vehicle to take you through life will give you a deeper appreciation of yourself and others. here are numerous varieties of healing modalities available for people today. Sometimes you may receive a healing and the results are profound and other times you may feel like nothing much happened for you. Has anything happened? In modern psychology they are just discovering about Neuroplasticity and the brain’s ability to heal itself. They are excited about this “new” knowledge which “New Age” healers have known, developed and delivered for decades. Initially some of these healing arts were from the East such as Reiki and then offered into the West but there were also many other ancient healing modalities that the Druids, American Indians or Maoris for example knew and shared into our modern society. Neuroplasticity is the property of the brain that enables it to change its own structure and functioning in response to activity and mental experiences. The author, Norman Doidge, who wrote the best-selling book, The Brain that Changes Itself: personal triumph

from the frontiers of brain science, sold over one million copies worldwide, went on to write another bestseller, The Brain’s Way of Healing. The work that he does helps to recognise spiritual healing modalities as legitimate pathways to physical, emotional and mental health. He is a psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and researcher, who through his work, has formalised and awakened modern medicine to what is already known to spiritual healers. He discusses Moskowitz who worked predominately with clients suffering from chronic pain and created the acronym MIRROR: Motivation, Intention, Relentlessness, Reliability, Opportunity and Restoration. This concept works across all areas of healing. First of all a client must be motivated to improve, be it a physical, emotional, mental or spiritual block. Secondly they must have the intention to want to work with the healer and divine source in any way possible to improve it. Then, thirdly, be prepared to reinforce the healing treatment more

than once. This would normally involve attending a treatment at least three times and utilising positive affirmations or guidance received from the healer between treatments. The Reliability part is the most interesting as this involves believing that the healing is taking place. The work that you are doing as the healing recipient is effective, ongoing and you can rely on the process. Opportunity is thanking the Universe for giving you this chance to learn and grow as a person through the healing process and Restoration is knowing that the neurons in your brain are healed and the pathways are strengthened positively. F

ocusing on what you want is the key to creating a life you love. Taking some time out to plan is the first step. The second step is sitting down and writing out what you want to create. If you are already doing this – great! Keep doing it and love the fact you are achieving and creating your life. Make sure your list is somewhere you can see it and as often as you can. It is important to have no expectations and a knowing that this action creates a great vibration. It’s the ‘great’ vibration that is the aim here. As things show up that are on your list, warmly thank the universe and look forward to more great things unfolding. If you are resistant here or have stories come up that keep you from being consistent with this, change them at this very moment! Creativity flows best with conscious intention. Focusing on what you want rather than what you don’t want, creates results in your reality.

Get it Done!

Below is a suggestion for list writing. Work with it or modify it to suit your needs – then follow through! Sit down at the beginning of the week with some time to write your list. Sunday night can work well. If you have a partner, get them involved. Two heads can be helpful here and assist with accountability. Write or type a personal list and a joint list if you are including your partner. If you have your own business, create a heading for that as well. Once you have your list and all the things on it, paste it on your desktop or on your desk and then each evening and morning take a look at it. In the evening, cross off what you did. This will help build your self-esteem and ‘feel good about me’ vibes! It also keeps your focus on what you want to create and what you have created. Great vibes to fall asleep to! In the morning, take a moment to

look at your list and pull from it what you can create in the day ahead. Set your intentions and follow through. If you find you are not sticking to it or keep creating excuses to not focus on it and get things done, explore what’s holding you back and make some changes. Using this structure, it will be obvious what is in your way. A simple and helpful affirmation here is – ‘I AM a creator – a creator I AM!’ If you feel resistance when trying this, open up and talk it out with your partner, a conscious friend or a trusted facilitator. It will be a negative belief that is holding you back and preventing you from creating your life. Lists are helpful and great. enevolent Capitalism is a movement that is beginning to sweep the globe. It’s turning up in all kinds of places. So what is Benevolent Capitalism? And why is it everyone’s business? Capitalism is not about big business. It’s the willingness to create more. There are many businesses and individuals that function from anti-conscious behaviour to cut down others in order to create money, but that’s not actually what capitalism was originally about. Capitalism, in its true form, is based on the principle of organic and sustainable growth for every individual. Benevolent means wishing well for everyone. Being a Benevolent Capitalist does not require you to have a business, it is about being willing to be a leader in your life. A Benevolent Capitalist is someone who is willing to be more than what they are at the moment. They are willing to understand that they are there

ometimes you just need to laugh, sometimes cry, yell, scream generally lose whatever inhibitions you might have. Why? Because it’s healthy. When we bottle up our emotions our body takes on this energy and will eventually turn it into mass causing physical pain and or illness. Allergies vs Food Sensitivities

any people believe that a food allergy means you go into anaphylactic shock when passed the peanuts at the local bar, or you eat prawns at a restaurant and break out in hives. These reactions are rare but account for 2% of the population. FOOD SENSITIVITIES are NOT rare – representing around 80% of the population. The worst part is they are usually hidden but we think the symptoms are normal: gas, bloating, joint pain, fatigue, cravings, skin problems, ADD, and difficulties losing weight. The problem is they are hard to identify by yourself. Your energy might drop six hours after you have consumed something, you may have a skin breakout in a day or two, etc. Lynette who became one of my clients had this problem. She did not know why her throat was constricting after every meal. After a while it

became quite scary, she would lay awake at night having difficulty breathing, wondering if she would still be alive in the morning. Consulting her doctor, she was sent home with an asthma puffer. She also had to carry an epi-pen which she used on three occasions, when her symptoms turned into anaphylactic reactions and she had to go to the hospital in an ambulance. F

irstly a question! Is it important to have spiritual self-belief? Personally I would say yes definitely. Why? Because it is an important aid we can use to navigate the extraordinary and exciting times we are going through as Earth’s energies rise. Many of us are having a challenge with seeing much of what’s occurring in the world today and we find we sometimes have to ‘dig deep’ to be able to handle what we see and/or are experiencing. There are also many things we observe that can make us unhappy, maybe angry, possibly fearful and even depressed. And at the same time when we are aware, we can pick up on certain changes in the political and other arenas which herald the commencement of change. Is there a difference between selfconfidence and self-belief? For me, I feel

the former is something which can be affected by outside events – for instance if we lose someone or something dear to us we could be completely shattered. Whereas when we have spiritual selfbelief we could see the circumstance differently and be able to remain balanced – in peace and emotionally neutral. So what is ‘self-belief’ on a spiritual level? It’s more than just having selfconfidence about ourselves. It is being absolutely certain and sure and actually ‘knowing’ before something takes place. There’s a level of ‘certainty’ about things – a deep belief that we are okay and will be okay. It comes when we are able to ‘walk’ through all self-doubt. Spiritual self-belief is something that is very useful to have so we are able to continue to stand upright – gracefully – as this planet of ours continues on its upwards journey.

ife is full of crossroads – moments in time where the choices we make have the power to have an impact on our lives forever. It was mid September last year and I had just got back from working for a children’s rights organisation in New Delhi during the hottest summer in 60 years. I was physically and emotionally spent and after 20 years of relocating my life overseas in pursuit of new adventures, the thought of finally setting up my life in Australia was a daunting one to say the least. Health Breakthroughs with Shungite

ver the last few months I’ve written about shungite and its health effects. Now I’d like to recount some of the healing stories and experiences with shungite that have been relayed to me from friends and those who’ve bought it over the last 12 months. One woman contacted me and said she was confined to bed with muscle and leg problems. She started drinking shungite water and using a number of pieces in her room, and her chronic leg and muscle problems have eased. And for the first time she is able to move her legs. Another person who has been taking shungite said he had a recent bladder infection and it cleared in 24 hours as he increased the intake of shungite water. I have also several examples, including my own experiences with shungite and headaches that indicate when you place stones directly onto the

headache site, it assists in removing the pain within about half an hour. This even includes strong, uncomfortable headaches based in the back of the skull. Results of tests in the Russian White Springs Sanatorium in Petrozavodsk, show the use of shungite pastes, waters and shungite mineral baths have assisted to cure many conditions. The following positive effects have been recorded: increase in the assistance with motion in stiffening joints; reduction of swelling and lessening of pains associated with musculoskeletal systems; elimination of allergic skin reactions; elimination of acute rhinitis (rhinitis is inflammation of the mucous lining of the nose) and reduction in juvenile acne in younger patients. In another Russian study into osteoarthritis and its treatment, they showed that shungite pastes were an effective treatment and rehabilitation for those patients suffering from osteo and

demonstrated great improvements with this, more than any other mainstream treatments such as pharmaceutical medications (Okorokov, 1997; Chirkin, 1993). Ancient Chinese text found, and documented, is estimated to be 3000 years old. The Native American Indians also have a long history of sclera use. Medieval Europe knew Sclerology, as seen in drawings in medical manuals. In view of how profoundly accurate and how easy it is to learn, it is a wonder Sclerology has not been practised more widely. One thing is for sure, Sclerology has been rediscovered, and is growing rapidly with its popularity. So, what is Sclerology? The ancient art of Sclerology is defined as the science of observing lines (blood vessels), colours and markings in the

whites of the eyes to determine one’s current health status. These markings, and their locations, show acidity build-up, stress and congestion within organs and systems of the body. The red lines and other markings and colourings in the white of the eyes actually correspond to conditions within the body. Their size, shape and various other aspects of configuration and shading describe current health qualities. Sclerology, therefore, is a means of looking into a person’s eyes to see what is happening with his or her health, and to get a sense of what is most important. It pinpoints exactly where the highest stress and congestion originates, how much of the stress is emotional, how much is physical and how much is both combined, as well as any organs and systems this stress and congestion may be influencing. Like Iridology, Sclerology is also an invaluable tool in viewing genetically inherited tendencies to weaknesses within the body. This means that from a

young age (around six months old to be exact), we are able to determine certain hereditary health conditions that may have been passed down to you through genetics. So, throughout your life, you are able to give a little extra care and support to those areas of the body that may be a little more susceptible to holding onto stress. These genetic tendency markings are termed ‘Primary Lines’, and are easily identified, and differ from other lines showing current pathology within the body. Signs and markings in the eyes may show in the sclera up to 13 months before symptoms may arise, or medical testing may be able to identify. “So Mrs Burns, what does your son have for breakfast? And do you make it for him?” I asked at the Medical Intuitive session for Shaun, 10-year-old boy. “Jean, I work shift work. Shaun gets his own breakfast of chocolates and lemonade. He just loves it and it is easier for me to let him get what he wants as that way he won’t fight with me.”

hen Mrs Burns brought Shaun to me, he was overweight and bullied at school. My passion was to assist the whole family not just Shaun. Mum was extremely overweight too and she was passing on her lifestyle to Shaun. There was something deeper other than Shaun and his weight. Shaun’s session revealed he was ‘weighed down’ with a massive responsibility that he did not tell his mum about. He felt guilty for his parents’ divorce and tried to sweeten his life with sugar. His dramatic weight gain was hiding and protecting himself from his true feelings. He felt like he had to be the man of the house. He wanted to yell at his parents for making him feel unloved

and unsafe. He felt so scared of what his future would hold. Shaun also shared what was happening at school. He was not being bullied but he was bullying other children, as he was determined not to show anyone his true feelings. So let’s get to the weight problem; the original cause of why Mrs Burns brought Shaun to me. He needed to shed this ‘heaviness’ off his body emotionally and now it was time to create an action plan. Mrs Burns needed to shed her weight about what had occurred too, which we did in a separate Medical Intuitive session away from Shaun. She had grown up in a similar situation and her Mum always fed her food to comfort her. She became aware she was doing the same thing. She did not know how to set

boundaries with Shaun as she wanted him to love her and him to feel loved so she would allow him to bully her too. As Mrs Burns shed the weight and burdens we created an action plan for the whole household. Three months later, Shaun and his Mum visited me and had shed lots of weight. Their weight balance and lifestyle had changed by not throwing their burdens and weight (or emotions) at anyone else. They used the strategies from our sessions. Relationship Hurting?

A

fter years of working with couples I have discovered that it is not unusual (even in a long lasting and committed relationship) that when one partner puts on weight, he/she experiences criticism and/or ridicule from the other partner. This can be a sign that the relationship is in need of assistance. Why does physical appearance play such a pivotal role in our lives? It is a common human behaviour to compare ourselves with other people/couples around us. Regrettably, in our society we are constantly presented with messages about body image. We feel pressure to look like the fit, slim, sexually attractive (and supposedly happy) people we see in the mass media – and we are constantly reminded that we are not “good enough” in comparison. What does this mean for relationships? When these perceptions emerge in close relationships through comments or even “jokes” about one partner

being fat or needing to lose weight, the partner with the increased body mass index can see his or her body as ugly and start experiencing lower selfesteem, because he/she loves and trusts the partner. If this is not addressed, then the relationship will become unsatisfactory for one or both partners. What is worse is that, instead of accepting the partner as he/she is, or supporting the partner to lose weight, the trim partner will often start to look around for a “good looking” partner. When this happens, the relationship commonly ends in a break-up. The possible consequences of breaking up due to an inability to accept the changes in one partner’s body can be devastating for families for a variety of reasons: • Parental separation before the age of 16 has the largest negative effect on a child’s development of personality. The more traumatic the separation, the more likely there will be significant negative consequence.

T

he orange tree is pretty remarkable in the aromatherapy world, as it produces three different essential oils. Orange comes from the orange peel, petitgrain from the leaves, and neroli, or orange blossom, comes from the flower. Just like its flesh, the oil derived from the orange peel promotes health and vitality. It is a great oil to use in most blends and, while it is uplifting and radiating, it also has relaxing and calming properties. Take for example a blend with orange and tea tree. This would be a wonderful antiseptic blend to treat acne and oily skin. Orange blended with lavender or neroli would have wonderful relaxing properties to treat insomnia and stress. When blended with rosemary uplifting properties to treat fatigue and exhaustion would be ideal. And if blended with the oil of jasmine it would become a sensual blend with antidepressant qualities.

Orange

The essential oil of orange is a top note with a citrus aroma that is sweet and refreshing. It conveys a sense of warmth and joy and combines beautifully with the spicy oils of cinnamon and clove for a zesty, invigorating and energising blend or frankincense and myrrh for a more meditative, spiritual blend. Orange is renowned for its antiinflammatory, antiseptic, antidepressant, anti-spasmotic and diuretic properties. It is ideal in treating muscular and nervous spasms, headaches, dull skin and is one of the preferred oils for anger, anxiety and depression. It has a balancing effect on the peristaltic action of the digestive tract and can be very helpful for the treatment of constipation and chronic diarrhoea. An excellent choice when detoxing, orange is especially effective when applied during a lymphatic drainage massage session. When it comes to the skin, orange has a remarkable ability to regenerate

and boost smoker’s skin, acne, dry and oily skin, and with a few drops of lavender, it is ideal in regular face compresses and spritzers. Limonene, a major constituent of orange oil, is commonly used in cosmetic products, food manufacturing, flavouring in medicines, in insecticides, and cleaning products. Tangalooma connection with the dolphins WORDS AMANDA DE WARREN

W

hen I had the privilege to go to Tangalooma Resort on Moreton Island (near Brisbane), I recorded an interview I did with Susan Hassard, Dolphin Care Team Manager. While there, the dolphins that come in to feed each night at the resort connected to me, and what I’m about to tell you is straight from the dolphins themselves. I think it’s so important to get it out there and I felt my old friend and work colleague, Steve Irwin, around me encouraging me, saying, “Go for it, buddy.” His work carries on through me and I know that. So, here we go ‘straight from the dolphins’ mouths’, so to speak! Through the connections I made with the sea creatures, I was made aware that the plight of the dolphins and all marine life is getting critical. Our eco-system is now more fragile than ever and it’s getting harder and harder for our marine life to find food. Even the birds are dying and starving and their numbers are dwindling fast. They’re not reproducing and this is also disrupting the balance of the delicate eco-system. The food is now

full of pollutants and chemicals and they can taste the difference, and can feel the temperature change in the water over the past few years. The air that falls onto Moreton Bay is full of toxins and the bay is being over-fished. The dolphins are now having to go out into deeper, more dangerous waters to find dinner and are competing for food with all the other deep-sea marine life. Nari, a dolphin I connected with at Tangalooma, was the one doing most of the talking during this interview as he felt he was the ‘spokes-dolphin’. He needed this to get out and once again educate the humans as to what we are doing to their home and ours. He says that their nightly feeds at the resort are a lot more than a free feed as it is also about education, and the food to them is just a bonus. Another dolphin, Tangles, told me that she was recently attacked by a very large shark on the other side of the island as they now have to venture out for food and in the path of the much bigger predators with whom they have to compete. I then connected to the bottom dwellers and they too told me about the

sediments and the toxins settling on the bottom of the bay, poisoning them and killing them off as they are then eaten by the bigger fish that also end up dying from the toxins. They want to remind us that we are in control and that we are destroying things for all of them living in the oceans around the world. They were all so happy that I was able to get their story out and remind

us that we need to reconnect to nature and feel a part of it once again on a regular basis. We are doing so much damage – a couple of them told me that they had been caught up in fishing line and had to be dragged to shore by the ‘uprights’ (what they call humans) to clear it from them and be quickly placed back into the water. They were so grateful and many of them would not be here today if it were not for all you loving and caring ‘uprights’. Sadly, some have not been seen since the 2011 floods and unfortunately again for one reason or another they have passed. One was called Fred. I then felt the whales around who also want to connect to me next time they are in the area or would like to have their say sometime soon. The next part is a little different but I found it absolutely fascinating. The dolphins told me about their connections with the ‘uprights’ for thousands of years and then I connected to an Aboriginal tribe called the Ngugi tribe who

Did you know that thyroid disease is becoming increasingly common, particularly in Australia? It could be the result of many factors, such as an overwhelming stress load, chemical overload, increased autoimmune risk, or the depleted nutrient content in the soil our food grows in. Both selenium and iodine are low in many locations of Australian soil, both are important for optimal thyroid function. Both an over and under active thyroid can influence weight, infertility, mood, sleep, libido and menstrual problems.

Your digestive system is like the root system of a tree, when the roots are healthy the tree is healthy. Did you know the digestive system is in fact a nervous system? This imbalance can be linked to painful periods, PCOS, PMS, breast tenderness, irritability, weight gain, depression, skin conditions, fluid retention and lethargy.

Much of the standard thyroid testing measures TSH, when in fact to truly diagnose a thyroid problem, the tests require more detail. T3 and T4 are the thyroid hormones that your body uses, so it is best to get those checked too.

Are you stressed and fatigued? Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. Its role is to help regulate our response to normal levels of physical and psychological stress. Clinically we frequently see cortisol levels either too high or too low. High cortisol is often seen in the acute stages of stress, however, when the stress response is activated too frequently the adrenals can fatigue and produce too little cortisol. Imbalanced cortisol levels are often seen in those suffering with unexplained fatigue, disturbed sleeping patterns, blood sugar level imbalance, increased fat mass, blood pressure issues, brain fog and altered mental performance.

What about Pyroluria? Pyroluria is a genetically determined metabolic condition. Those with elevated pyrroles usually have an increased demand for certain nutrients that are essential for neurotransmitter production, such as serotonin and dopamine.
