t’s true. Naturally alkaline water has a chemical makeup that differs significantly from artificially alkaline water. More important, however, is the fact that artificially alkaline water causes side effects and should generally be avoided as a daily drinking water. Things you are not told • What is the difference between naturally and artificially alkaline water? • What are the side effects of drinking artificially alkaline water or ionised water? • Why do people see benefits in the first 30 days of drinking ionised water? • Why does continued consumption result in side effects? • Which water systems create naturally alkaline water? • Are there other important aspects of water besides the pH or alkalinity?
 What is the difference between natural and artificial alkaline water? When measured in drinking water, an alkaline pH can be a result of either natural or unnatural conditions in the water. So when comparing two waters, each with a pH of 8.5, one can be

healthy while the other may cause side effects. Electric water ionisers split water molecules apart using electricity to artificially create higher pH water which they call alkaline water. Why is this artificial? All water found in nature has a pH that perfectly corresponds to the minerals in the water. When you drink alkaline water, the body assumes it is receiving alkaline minerals. The problem with electric ionised water is that the body thinks it is receiving more alkaline minerals than what are actually present in the water. 
Most people never question whether water is naturally or artificially made alkaline and these companies prefer this kept as a secret. Is it OK to drink alkaline water daily? Can one become too alkaline? For excellent health, my point of view is to drink naturally alkaline water daily. Doing so supplies the body with key alkaline minerals it needs to buffer acid. It is recommended to drink one litre for every 22kg of your body weight per day. Since the alkalinity is a result of naturally alkaline minerals like calcium and magnesium, the body is capable

of using the minerals it needs and storing or discarding any excess. You cannot become overly alkaline drinking naturally alkaline water. If you are drinking electrically ionised water or artificially alkaline water, it is always advised to measure your body’s pH daily and regulate your consumption accordingly. Which water systems create naturally alkaline water? his month I ‘road tested’ the Ampliphi Farina powder by Don Tolman. Many people use this product as a meal replacement, part of a weight loss program or while fasting. I had a slightly different motivation; this product spoke to me more as an act of self-kindness. It felt like a beautiful nurturing way to look after myself and I have enjoyed it on many days as a nourishing bowl of soup I could have around lunch time or during the afternoon period instead of resorting to carbs. Now don’t get me wrong, there is nothing I love more than creating homecooked soups and we have mostly home-cooked meals in our household. But the appeal with this product of course is that is so easy to make, just two tablespoons of the powder, add 250ml of hot water and voila! Ampliphi didn’t disappoint my taste buds either, in fact it reminded me a bit

of Gazpacho or a really yummy, spicy tomato soup (there is a bit of a spicy kick with the ginger and cayenne). ho doesn’t love a rich, decadent, moist chocolate brownie? That’s right, no one! As a plant-based coach and raw food chef, I decided to cook up a brownie that everyone can enjoy without feeling that sickly feeling after – or worse, guilty! The secret ingredient in these brownies is the adzuki beans. I politely say ‘no thank you’ to black beans, as they upset many people’s bellies. Along with mung beans, adzuki beans are one of the gentlest and nourishing beans we can eat. Their high protein and fibre content means they help regulate blood sugar, which is essential for hormone health, and of course diabetes management. They’re also high in folate, magnesium and

B vitamins. So they absolutely scream health! Whip up these beauties for your next gathering or dinner party and watch everyone be amazed by the secret ingredient. This brownie is also a winner for most with it being refined sugar-free, gluten-free, dairy-free and egg-free. Ingredients: 1 can of organic adzuki beans, rinsed well and drained ½ cup almond meal 1/3 cup coconut nectar ¼ cup coconut oil, melted 3½ tbsp raw cacao 1 heaped tbsp almond butter Seeds from 1 vanilla pod ½ tsp baking powder Pinch of salt

Optional: ½ cup dark chocolate chips or 4 drops of peppermint oil or wild orange oil Method: 1. Preheat oven to 180ºC and line a 20x20cm baking dish with baking paper. 2. Add all ingredients to a food processor and process well, ensuring all the beans are processed thoroughly. This can take a couple of minutes. 3. If adding chocolate chips, pour batter into a bowl and mix them through. 4. Pour mixture into lined baking tray and bake for 15 minutes. 5. Allow to cool before cutting. 6. Serve with berries and vanilla coconut cream! Brownies keep well in the fridge for up to a week (if you don’t eat them all before then!).

ave you ever asked yourself why is there such a high level of nutritional misunderstanding in our society? As consumerism infiltrates our lives and taste has taken precedence over nutrition, many people seem to have lost the innate understanding of what our bodies are designed to eat. Before we eat, we should look at our bodies as a ‘machine’ and consume food to fuel our machine accordingly. If you fill your car with Coca-Cola instead of petrol, it’s not going to get you very far! It’s the same for the human body; 2 litres of cola instead of 2 litres of water is going to have a consequence. Wrong fuel, wrong machine. So, when viewing our body as a machine, how do we determine which ‘fuel’ is best for our body? Luckily there’s clues all along your digestive system from top to bottom to help you choose what to eat. We can learn a lot about the types of foods best suited to our body by examining the length of our intestines.

The human digestive system from mouth to anus is approximately 2830 feet in length, and your intestines account for roughly 10-12 times your height. That’s a long distance for all the food you eat to travel! It’s easy to see how people can get constipated if they put the wrong types of fuel in their body. By comparison, the intestinal length of carnivorous wild animals is much shorter, approximately 3-6 times their body length. Why does the difference in how we’re designed matter? Because it dictates the types of foods we should be eating. Carnivorous animals can tolerate a high-meat diet because their intestinal length is relatively short, which means their digestive process is much quicker. Complete digestion can occur in 2-4 hours; aided by extremely potent stomach acid to assist in quickly breaking down the flesh. Humans on the other hand have intestines that are simply not designed to properly digest meat or highly-

processed foods – in the large quantities that many of us do – without our bodily machine ‘breaking down’. And by breaking down I mean constipation, bloating, polyps and bowel cancer. These are all common signs of wrong fuel, wrong machine. Unlike carnivores, humans require adequate dietary fibre to help move food through our digestive tract. Our stomach acid is also approximately 20 times weaker than carnivores, which indicates we’re better suited to a largely plant-based diet as it’s easier and quicker for our bodies to digest. In my opinion, the best diet for our digestive system includes lots of fresh fruit and veggies. If you choose to eat animal proteins, limit it to no more than 5-10% of your daily intake. I see a lot of constipated clients each week, and they all find that their ‘machine’ starts working 10-times better once they start putting the right type of fuel in their body.

One diet

does not fit all



ith today’s abundance of information and health gurus all over social media spouting their latest weight loss programs, the average Aussie has no idea what to eat. Does this sound like you? “Should I eat a no carb diet? Are fruits OK? Is paleo healthy for me or is there too much meat? Does eating fat really not make you fat? Are grains really all bad? What’s a wholefood diet and how do I do that? Ahhhhh!” In this article, I’m going to simplify everything for you, as eating healthy shouldn’t be and doesn’t have to be hard. 1st: Each person is unique, we all have different body types therefore, no one way of eating will be right for everyone. So, the first thing to do is to forget the one-size-fits-all model – as it does NOT work. 2nd: When working out what foods are best for you there are four important factors to remember. • Eat a diet that focuses on quality,

nutrient dense, fresh foods. Eat foods as they come from nature (paddock direct to plate). Avoid processed, refined, packaged or tinned foods. • Avoid all processed and refined sugars. Enjoy a couple of pieces of fruit per day. • Avoid bad quality fats (margarine, vegetable, canola oil, deep fried foods). Include good quality fats (organic grassfed butter, non-refined coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil). 3rd: Work out your metabolic type, then you can really start eating right for your body type. There are 3 general metabolic body types: 1. Protein types: They feel satisfied and full, and will have good energy that lasts 3+ hours after eating a meal that’s higher in protein and fat. 2. Carb types: They feel satisfied and full, and will have good energy that lasts 3+ hours after eating a meal that’s higher in non-refined carbohydrates and lower in fat. 3. Mixed types: They feel satisfied

and full, and will have good energy that lasts 3+ hours after eating a meal that’s a mix of both protein, non-refined carbohydrates and fats. Everybody requires a mix of carb, fat and protein in each meal. The key is working out which end of the scale you sit. When you eat the right ratio, your energy and mood will stabilise, you won’t be hungry between meals or need to snack and you are less likely to over eat. This means your weight will start to naturally reduce and/or stabilise. Finding out your exact metabolic type can assist with also knowing which particular foods in each food group may be balancing or unbalancing for your type. Using a specific process of fine tuning with the help of a practitioner, can also help you find your unique ‘ideal zone’ where your metabolism functions optimally. e’re Earthlings connected to the great Mother through our feet, drawing on the abundant supply of free electrons for our energy needs for growth and vibrant health. Free electrons are used to charge our cellular batteries and re-ignite the self healing intelligence of our body through a resilient and cohesive nervous system. Walking barefoot on the earth not only balances our electrical potential, it also offers an opportunity to establish a more efficient and effortless gait. by walking barefoot on the beach, walk in the water and sense the temperature, texture of the sand, and the feel of wind and sun on your skin. Stay in your body. Turn off the music, take off your headphones and be totally present in your body. You’re sensing your life. How are your teeth reflecting your health? WORDS JEAN SHEEHAN, Principal – Millennium Education


id you know that your body is a mirror image of other parts of your body and will communicate with you exactly what is happening in your life? For example, when you have teeth problems, whether it be broken, decayed, not surfacing, cracked, baby teeth not falling out or anything else, there is another part of the body affected. When I teach Medical Intuition, I call this reciprocal. What that means is another body part is EQUAL or a mirror to another body part. Your right shoulder is a reciprocal of your left hip. Your left wrist is a reciprocal of your right ankle. And so on. If you look at these body parts and more, they actually look alike too! I like exploring teeth and energetic dentistry, as in health care, we do not tend to consider what teeth are saying as a body part. And everyone’s FEAR of the dentist has them not wanting to focus on these amazing body parts. Best to give an example. Looking at teeth 1, 16, 17 and 32, which are at the very back and right and left hand sides

of your mouth, they have the same information and health details. If these teeth are causing discomfort, it will be connected with emotional links of feeling loneliness, acute grief, feeling trapped, inhibition, lack of joy, greed and feeling unloved. There is also the body part of the HEART that is involved. Now let’s look at the front two top and bottom teeth, as they are what you see mostly when you look at someone’s mouth and teeth. These relate to the kidneys. If there is disease or discomfort in these areas, top or bottom, there can be fear, shame, guilt, and deep exhaustion. When we are unaware of what is happening in our life, the body will have ‘dis-ease’ to make us aware. So if my front teeth are affected in some way, my amazing body is letting me have ‘time to create a new lifestyle that supports and empowers me’. It can also mean that my kidneys need support in their health. But we are not taught how to read the emotional aspects of the body, unless you have learnt Medical Intuition. If you are a dentist, dental nurse,

oral hygienist, orthodontist, etc you could apply this information to your patients and know that there is more to the story than just teeth problems. This information will support the dental care of the patient long term. Lastly, when you have had any dental work done, thank your body and your teeth for all they do. Know they are doing so much more than creating a great smile or masticating your food. They are talking to you always. any years ago I was on a trip to India following a recommendation from my spiritual teacher. A journey of inner reflection was not the easiest for a man coming from the western mindset of outer gratification. Being in India at this time of my life was another layer of growth potential that scared me as well as drew me to the edge of my being. It was after a stay in an Ashram and during my visit to the small coastal town of Varkala in Southern India that the true value of a smile revealed itself to me. He gave me a tour of the room and asked, “would you like to take it?” I replied with open excitement, “It would be too expensive for me”. My new friend turned out to be the owner manager. “What can you afford?” he enquired with a smile. To make a long story short, I got the room and it was my cheapest stay yet and way below my budget. When I asked, “why have you given this to me?” he replied “the gift of your smile was the highest payment I have received for this room

Oral health, nutrition and my early years with a family of dentists WORDS DR CARLOS SANCHEZ, MD


aving grown up in Spain with a family of dentists (my mum, sister, brother, aunty and cousins) I always thought I knew how to care for my teeth. I couldn’t comprehend how despite having all the information that my family recommended for them like flossing, brushing and rinsing with fluoride mouth washes, as a child, I still ended up getting mercury amalgams. It wasn’t until one day around 10 years ago that the penny finally dropped. One afternoon my partner (who is a child health nurse and midwife) came home with a DVD that one of her clients had lent her. In this DVD there was a presentation of the work of Dr Weston A Price, an American dentist who in the 1930s decided to travel around the world, looking at traditional people’s teeth. Back then in the USA, the general population’s mouth health was pretty

atrocious, and he was trying to find the cause of it. He realised these traditional cultures hardly had dental decay or teeth overcrowding, but more importantly, they didn’t suffer with the chronic diseases we get today. He wrote the book ‘Nutrition and Physical Degeneration’ and he found one of the commonalities of these people was that despite having very different diets, their food was unprocessed and rich in liposoluble vitamins (A, D, E and K and particularly K2) which is extremely important for calcium metabolism. It is worthwhile having a look at this book, as a matter of fact, it has had a tremendous impact on the way I look at sickness and its causes in my medical career. When I meet a new patient, I always look in their mouth, as this provides a ‘window to their whole body’. This gives me signs and clues of possible

problems like thrush which can be viewed via the tongue and oropharynx and poor immunity, pathological processes of mineralisation resulting in calcification of dental plaque due to poor levels of vitamin K2 and cardiovascular disease to name a few. Most sick people with chronic diseases have poor oral health. Periodontal disease or gum disease has been linked to cancers, cardiovascular disease, poor diabetes control, an increase in mortality, even detrimental effects in pregnancy, like low birth weight and pre-eclampsia. See an integrative dentist and doctor who can give you good advice about how to look after your mouth and general health and you will save time and money, but most importantly you will prevent the serious consequences of letting your health go.

Sherpas on the ascent to recovery


estled in a seaside village two and half hours’ drive south of Bangkok, ‘Oceans Thailand’ is a residential treatment centre with a difference. Seven years in the making, Oceans is a holistic retreat that offers evidence-based solutions to mental health problems and addiction. Clinical Director Justin Lucas explains that difference: “Firstly, we don’t have graduation ceremonies for residents when they transition out of the program,” he says. “Residents instead are urged to see the end of the program as the start of a new life.” While it is important to validate what people accomplish during treatment, it is critical to re-inforce vigilance on an individual’s recovery journey. “Far too many people relapse on day 31 or 61 or 91 – the day after they exit programs,” he says, “often because of a false belief that they have been cured or that the problem of addiction has been somehow ‘fixed’.” Unlike other programs, Lucas continues, which focus post-treatment

plans towards the end of residential treatment, Oceans works with residents to realise and develop strong support networks within their community from the first day of treatment. “We have adopted a new strategy, holistically working with residents in a ‘multiple pathways to recovery’ approach, with integrated treatment models,” he says. While Oceans encourages residents to engage in mutual-support programs, he says, it recognises that providing only a 12-step model in a residential treatment program falls short of current professional standards. “AA or NA are not treatment, not professional. They are peer-support groups that, yes, have a beneficial impact on many people entering recovery,” Lucas says. “But they have their limitations and barriers.” Oceans is ‘client-centred’, he says. Its program is founded on the belief that sustainable recovery has to be organically driven by residents, evoking their innate desire for a better life.

The program does this by focusing on building self-efficacy and using practical tools that residents can draw on for many years to come. This, he says, is carried out with empathy, compassion, and understanding. “We focus less on the chemical or behavioural aspects and more on addressing the underlying vulnerabilities that lead to addiction,” he says. Oceans appreciates that the recovery process is a highly personal journey and that the ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach is outdated. “At Oceans we try not to use the word ‘client’ because it has a strong clinical connotation; we use residents’ names, or refer to them as residents or guests,” he says. “We have a privileged responsibility to assist individuals in their recovery; we are merely Sherpas, carrying the emotional baggage for a period of time to help people make better choices in the future.”

s we all face the new alignments of who we are becoming, something is rising out of the heaviness from the past, a calling to embrace more self-respect, a higher place of empowerment, a stepping stone to mastery of self. For many decades, self-respect has been diluted as we sought and fought for acceptance from others, to be approved of, to fit in, to not upset the apple cart or rock the boat. Speaking up for yourself as an act of truth was often judged as defiance, trouble making, and punishable, so we learnt to play along, keeping quiet, not causing conflict or confrontation, while inwardly we started to lose the connection with our inner truth. We stopped speaking our truth, we started to say what we thought others wanted to hear, and women, globally, lost their voices.

The voice of change is the voice of respect!!! The only way we ever get respect is to be that for ourselves. This means we have to treat ourselves in a way that demonstrates how we want to be treated. We must reclaim our sense of value, place boundaries firmly in place, be courageous enough to stand up for ourselves and others, find ease in saying no when that is what we mean. We can demand respect but until we offer this to ourselves, all we are doing is making noise. In the work I do, I see self-respect as a throat chakra issue. Everything that goes in and out of the mouth, passes through the throat chakra. All the things we consume, ingest, swallow, no matter if physical, mental, emotional or spiritual has to pass the governance of our own level of self-respect. The way we speak about ourselves

or others, the judgments, critiques, putdowns, chip away at our self-respect, as well as energetically we step into those powerfully spoken words once they have been sent into the collective energy field. There is a desperate need for our youth to understand self-respect in the face of all the desensitising entertainments they have access to. There is increased peer pressure to take action on many things they are not prepared for, the expectations of sexual behaviours and the instant gratification mindset are present. Self-respect, the ability to honour and hold ourselves true, asks us to gently remember who we are, that our worth is indefinable, our value is expansive, we are worth the effort and all that is required is that we walk that belief in each heartbeat.

o you know that you can learn a great deal about your health just by looking at your tongue and mouth? In naturopathic medicine, the mouth gives us a wealth of information and insight into the health of the body. Aside from a comprehensive case history, naturopathic testing that includes looking at tongue and mouth signs, gives a direction as to where to head with treatment. There are clear and obvious things we look for that may indicate a lack of minerals and vitamins, poor oral health, or compromised digestive function (and it’s a lot easier checking the top end than the bottom end of the digestive system): • A smooth glossy red tongue could indicate a deficiency in iron, folate and/ or vitamin B12 which can be confirmed with pathology testing and live blood analysis. • A burning tongue could mean that

your zinc levels may need to be topped up, especially if you have ulcers as well. Mouth ulcers also often appear when we are under stress and can resolve with the use of a broad-spectrum B complex to support our nervous system. • A cracked and fissured tongue gives us a clue as to connective tissue integrity throughout the body which could be supported with collagen-rich foods such as bone broth. • Food sensitivity sometimes causes a painful and itchy tongue and mouth, possibly even a scratchy throat. We can check which are the offending foods using kinesiology, IgG blood testing or via an elimination diet. • A white cottage cheese-like coating on the tongue might be due to oral thrush, commonly seen after a course of antibiotics disrupts the delicate balance of our digestive flora. However, this could also be due to a deeper cause

like a weakened immune system, poorly controlled diabetes, or autoimmune disease. If the white coating is mostly at the back of the tongue, this could be from reflux and excess acid irritating the tissue there. • A swollen-looking and scalloped tongue, where there are teeth marks around the edges are caused by fluid retention, and key things that we would look for here include toxic load or hyperthyroidism. • Bleeding gums? Try some Vit C and bioflavonoids. Gingivitis? Try Co Q10. The mouth and tongue are like the canary in the coalmine and will often show up symptoms before disease manifests in the rest of the body. Checking your mouth and tongue is so easy to do, so go ahead, grab a mirror and say aaaaah.

Bacteria from decay, tension from grinding and clenching or inefficient digestion of food from poor saliva and pH in the mouth can all have significant effects on our health. We know from the work of Dr Masaru Emoto that human consciousness has a significant effect on the molecular structure of water. It is easy then, to link human consciousness and the words we speak with our periodontal health. Words pertaining to love, hate, judgment, encouragement all flow from our mouth, and limiting points of view and judgment can show up as decay, gum disease, and acidity in the mouth, positioning the mouth as an essential player in the health and vitality of the whole body. “Gums are a lot about choices,” explains Shauna, who says that our need to always get things right can have an impact on our gum health. “Always needing to be right limits our choices, because we maintain rigidity and a fixed point of view. When we let go of our need to be right, the rigidity in our body eases and our gums can return to a healthy state.” Shauna goes on to explain that tooth decay can represent our unwillingness to change, and when we become stagnant in life, decay shows up in our mouth. Grinding and clenching our teeth represent fear, anger, fury and rage, which are all distractor implants that affect how we eat, speak, make love and communicate with others. Shauna says Happy Mouth does not replace conventional dentistry. We still need to take care of our dental health and hygiene. Well the emotion stays with you long after the opportunity to shout, whisper, roar, bellow, reveal love, express concern or kindness has long gone. Is it the uncertainty or the knowing of how your communication will be received that stops you from speaking? A memory from long ago, being told to shut up, being spoken over, laughed at or humiliated so you learnt to bite your tongue, clench your teeth or clamp your lips together. Not being heard leads us to believe our words hold no value, our contributions are insignificant and no-one will listen anyway. Stop for a moment and think about where that belief came from, was that person confident, happy, centered and self-assured? Did they feel in charge of their life and circumstances, were they projecting their own lack on to you? Maybe they felt uneasy with your truth, insights or

felt inadequate, as they didn’t have the knowledge to answer. If you’ve had the experience of feeling paralysed when communicating, try saying the words out load, to no-one in particular, when you’re by yourself. Get used to expressing uncomfortable emotions in private. Without an audience it doesn’t matter if you stumble, mumble, become muddled or raise your voice, just say it. And it may feel good to release the emotion with sound, not a vowel or consonant spoken. Have you considered the lost opportunity for the other person? Will a relationship grow without nurturing, without the flow of understanding, clarity, consideration and forgiveness? Unlikely. We all see, perceive, feel and react differently. Our experience library is unique, but if it’s shared, it can be amplified and cultivated with the chance to flourish. Your particular viewpoint may open another’s eyes to something they haven’t seen or realised up until that moment – that’s a gift!

– a stroke of inspiration


A stroke”, the paramedics muttered to themselves as I was stretchered into the ambulance; desperately wanting to tell them I was only 49 years old and they must have misdiagnosed my symptoms; but I could not speak, nor move my right side. This was the scariest moment of my life, and as an ex-UK police detective of 25 years, I had experienced a few of those. My stroke, and my subsequent post-stroke depression were certainly not on my ‘bucket list’ but reflecting upon the last five years, my life has changed so much for the better. Why? Because I have slowed down and refuse to accept negativity and stress into my life. Reaching out for support was the first step and meeting a personal trainer who identified my physical and mental needs, teaching me new strategies to cope with the obstacles of life that have come my way was all I needed.

Mindfulness training taught me to “Focus on what you CAN do” which is something I now live by daily. I may not have been able to return to my occupation as I knew it, but there were so many other things that I could do. “I can’t” is no longer in my vocabulary and I am ready for any challenge that presents itself. My able limbs helped me re-focus on my fitness and I began to climb, cycle and run, having since achieved several 10km runs over the past few years. Post-stroke, my brain would only work in rhyme, so I began to write poetry about the frustrations, sadness and amusing times of my stroke recovery. I began to share these with others online, who gained hope and positivity from my words and I have helped them cope with their own stroke recovery or major setback. Knowing my poetry

didn’t always know this when I was growing up. Women who spoke up, and out, with kindness and power, were few and far between. These days I hear these words leave my lips frequently. Being a mother with two young daughters it is my mission to ensure they know their voices are needed on this planet, their expression is crucial for the evolution of humanity (even when their speaking up is hard for me). Speaking up is not always easy, it can be really hard to connect with courage and use our voices to be heard. Silence can feel safe. It can feel counterintuitive to our needs for peace and ease to speak up. We may believe silence is our friend yet what if in the long run, silencing ourselves is destined to end in sadness, regret or worse still, resentment of ourselves or others. So how do we do speak up when

it’s hard? And are there any guarantees if we do? I wish there was a simple answer but finding my voice has been a lifetime journey. I literally came up in hives each morning in high school when I had to respond ‘present’ in front of the room. Connecting with the ‘why’ of being heard has helped me infinitely. I speak or write to make visible that which has been hidden. I share that which longs to be expressed and I carry equal responsibility for this with every other human on the planet. People often assume that being an author, teacher and therapist means I am immune to the challenges of vulnerability or showing up real with my expression. I’m often told, “it’s easy for you, you always manage to find the right words”, and my response is, “actually, it’s hard for me too”. It’s scary to be heard, it can be terrifying

to be seen and sometimes my hands still shake when I speak, yet every day I listen to life and do my best to trust the ways it wants to use me. It takes courage and commitment to show up and I remind myself daily that hiding serves no one. Over time I promise courageously showing up, using your voice and being seen will set you on fire with trust and the flames will burn away doubt while inspiring your purpose. Everywhere you go, little sparks will fly off you and other humans will begin trusting themselves more too. Maybe it’s time to start listening to you? hen we smile, the biochemical results not only affect ourselves since dopamine, endorphins and serotonin are all released when that smile graces our face, but our smile also affects others because it is contagious. The cingulate cortex, an unconscious automatic response area in the brain, is responsible for our facial expression of smiling from happiness or mimicking another smile. Studies have shown that when viewing pictures of people, smiling and facial expressions went directly to imitation of what subjects saw. If you’re smiling at someone, it’s likely they can’t help but smile back. If they don’t, they’re making a conscious effort not to. Every smile holds a frequency. Science shows that everything on the planet, from people to objects, vibrates with energy. Emotions also have their own energetic frequencies, everyone has his/her own energetic frequency. When we take the time to stop and become aware of what we

allow ourselves to dwell on, change happens. The influences we have been programmed with since childhood impact every day. However, are our thoughts the truth or limiting beliefs? Becoming aware of how powerful our thoughts are and how they impact on everything we do provides such insight. Especially when it comes to money, which is of course just an exchange of energy. I encourage you to slow down and do a stocktake of where you are, where you want to be and how you want to live the rest of your life. Being grateful for what you already have is a huge step forward. Do things that you love, that make you happy, that you’re passionate about, vibrate at the level of that which you want to receive. 5. LET IT GO. Release fear and doubt, to spirit. You know when you are trying to make something happen; you can’t stop thinking about it? Trying to manifest in that state, is like trying to walk through mud. It’s heavy and doesn’t flow. ou can’t see it, you can’t touch it and you can’t smell it, but chances are you are surrounded by it right now – electromagnetic radiation or EMR for short. Low frequency EMR from household appliances, electrical circuits and lighting; and high frequency EMR from Wi-Fi routers, smart phones, cell towers, Bluetooth devices and smart meters, are now a firm fixture in our modern lives and this proliferation of wireless technologies means we are exposed to far higher levels of EMR than previous generations. How dangerous this is to human health is under ongoing investigation but studies have linked EMR exposure to a wide range of health problems including chronic fatigue, headaches, autism, Alzheimer’s disease and cancer. There is enough research out there to suggest we should approach EMR with caution and adopt the precautionary principle when using ‘smart’ technology. In 2011, the World Health Organization classified this type of

non-ionising radiation as ‘possibly carcinogenic’. Many countries are already adopting the precautionary principle when it comes to EMR from Wi-Fi. Germany advises its citizens to use ethernet cables instead of Wi-Fi in homes, Haifa in Israel is replacing all Wi-Fi in schools with a safer, wired connection and in 2015 France banned Wi-Fi in nurseries and stipulated that it should be minimised in schools for children up to 11 years old. In Australia, the governing body ARPANSA sets the radiation safety levels for Australian citizens and they have this to say about radiofrequency electromagnetic energy from mobile phones and wireless devices: “… it’s impossible to be completely sure there isn’t some risk. This is particularly true for children where there is little research evidence.” Exposure to electromagnetic radiation can affect people in different ways, with symptoms including headaches, fatigue, poor concentration, nausea and skin rashes. A small, but growing, number of people worldwide

experience a severe intolerance to EMR, known as electrohypersensitivity (EHS). Reducing your exposure to EMR is easier than you think. Distance is your friend so keep wireless devices away from your head and body. Text rather than talk on your mobile phone or use the speaker function when making a call. Switch your wireless devices to airplane mode when internet connectivity is not required, especially if it’s being used by a child. Opt for wired connections over wireless connections on devices like computers, home landlines, laptops, speakers and printers. Safeguard your sleep by turning off your Wi-Fi router at night and keep bedrooms a technology-free zone. If you use your mobile phone as your alarm, ensure it is switched to airplane mode while you sleep. A few small habit changes can make all the difference. bout 10 years ago, I had a kind of breakdown. The kind where you are functional but emotionally, mentally, physically and financially, just can’t go on. At that time I had been working in the health/wellness/spiritual growth industry for about 28 years. Over those years, I’d had a couple of natural healing centres, a bookstore, an exercise class business, been a physical therapist, and had taken just about every course available. I was pretty much ‘certified’ in everything (or maybe just close to certifiable!). My main interest had been in finding ways to stay young and the keys to rejuvenation and yet, here I was – unwell and financially stressed, at staring the age of 50 in the decidedlylacklustre face. So, I made some radical decisions – instead of trying to ‘hold it all together’

– I sold my home, paid off all my debts to ease the financial bother I was in, and only kept working at the things I enjoyed. Then, I moved to the beach. I focused on my health and getting well. I walked on the sand, swam in the sea and thought about ‘stuff.’ After about a year, I was feeling enthusiastic and creative and it was time to go back to the city. I was ready to fire again! To the outside world, I had probably done the ‘wrong’ thing. I had used all my capital to fund that year of ‘retreat’, so financially I had to start over. Oh well! It wasn’t easy. But that space to be with nature and myself was the turning point. During that time I found a modality – Access Bars® – which turned my health around fast. I followed the energy and all these years later, I can see that the seeds that were sown then, are blossoming now.

At one point, dental problems led me to Happy Mouth energetic dentistry which, it turns out, is a ‘youthening’ system for the body. My apparent ‘breakdown’ showed me just what I had been looking for, and that’s the basis of a fun living now, where my business means I get to travel a lot, talk to amazing people and enjoy my body, and walk on the beach too. Hearing the

voices of the ancestors



f all the collectives which we are part of, the field of the ancestors has the strongest affect on us. We all come from a long line of people who came before us – people that you may know and many that you don’t know or have even heard of. People who lived on this earth, just like you do now, who experienced the challenges and the joys of life, who perhaps had some successes, and without a doubt had many challenges. During my training and work as a Family Constellation and Shaman Practitioner, I often find that clients need to go back many generations to resolve family patterns. It can be difficult to resolve or find out about how you may be affected from family karma and patterns from those who are living, or maybe you have family that have passed and the stories have not been shared. Creating an ancestral altar as

a sacred space dedicated to your connection with your ancestors can be very healing. You can create one for a place where you conduct prayer, ritual, meditation, and offerings to your ancestors. It is where you continue or establish your relationship with those in your lineage who have come before you. Your altar provides a powerful visible representation of your spiritual connection to you ancestors – those you knew and did not know and helps you to feel that you belong. Your altar becomes a gateway between the seen and the unseen realms. CREATING AN ANCESTOR ALTAR There is no limit to where and how you can set up an altar. It is personal for each person and can often depend on your own cultural, religious or spiritual background. However, for most people, this will be a new concept and you may

feel unsure about what you are doing, or worry about ‘getting it right’. The first thing I will share with you is that you cannot get this wrong. Setting up your altar can be anywhere. It could be in any room you deem suitable in your home or it could be in a special place in your garden. There is no limit to how big or small your ancestor altar is – you may have simply one candle or you could have many candles, ornaments, crystals, feathers any other pieces from Mother Nature to act as your ancestor altar. Choose a space where you feel comfortable and will be able to spend some quiet time alone. There is one thing that you do need to keep in mind though – your ancestor altar is for your ancestors only. Luscious lip illusion: Why are

petroleum products bad for your lips?



ollowing on from last month’s article, I’ve had a lot of people want to know more about why petroleum products are so bad for your lips, yet so commonly used. This month we break down the luscious lip illusion of fake-good products. In most cases reaching for a product that moisturisers your lips, especially as the weather gets cooler and the humidity decreases, is really a no brainer, but what if what you’re using is doing more harm than good. The illusion when using these petrochemical-based products is that it will give you lips that are moisturised and hydrated, yet it’s not water-soluble and acts as a water repellent. This lustred imitation of a great lip care product more often than not helps to clog your pores. And unless you know exactly where the petroleum jelly has come from and made for, you may be risking your luminous lips to some very well documented ingredients such as dioxane 1-4. This is a by-product that is known by leading chemists,

antalum S. spitacum is a sandalwood native to Western Australia whereas the more common Santalum album is native to India. This aromatic tree is a fairly small evergreen that can grow to a height of around 3-8 metres, unlike the album variety which can grow up to 12-15 metres high. The fascinating thing about all sandalwood trees is that they are considered hemiparasitic which means in order to survive, their roots must be able to reach other trees so they can gain the nutrients required to grow. The good news is this tree does not kill its host in the process. The oil is obtained from the heartwood of the tree which is chopped and chipped for distillation. It must be over 30 years old before it is cultivated. Sadly the Indian album variety was considered in a critical state due to the illegal exploitation of this precious oil and it is reported that there are no mature trees left in the forest areas due to this, but also to spike disease which has claimed a lot of the producing trees.

The Australian sandalwood is sustainably managed by the Department of Parks and Wildlife which sets many boundaries around the harvest of this oil including the amount of green wood and dead wood used. For hundreds of years sandalwood has been used for religious and sacred ceremonies such as embalming processes and in reverence to respected Gods. It has always been renowned for its anti-infection qualities and ability to treat the mind and body as one. Sandalwood is used a lot in Ayurvedic medicine and is well known for its abilities when it comes to coughs, colds, bronchial infections, fever, urinary tract infections and liver and gall bladder conditions. Used with clary sage it is excellent for treating sore throats. It is also known to be a wonderful expectorant especially with oils like cedarwood, lavender and eucalyptus and to help relieve inflammation and is a wonderful muscle relaxant with oils like lavender, German chamomile and grapefruit. Sandalwood acts as an astringent

to help heal skin irritations and has an anti-inflammatory effect which may assist with conditions such as eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis. It is a wonderful addition in skincare as it has a cooling and moisturising effect and is especially supportive of healing dry skin. tepping into the Hyperbaric chamber felt a little like a scene from Avatar. I was fully clothed, and the pod was quite comfortable, and once sealed I was able to communicate with Ibuki Health staff via telephone or walkie talkie. How to brush your animal friend’s teeth WORDS DR ELAINE CEBULIAK


ood dental care is essential to extend your pet’s life span and assure a good quality of life. Just like you, your pet needs to receive daily dental care at home. It is best to begin home care when the puppy or kitten is between eight and twelve weeks; however, it is never too late to start. If your pet has any accumulated tartar (calculus) it must be removed by your veterinary surgeon. This process, called prophylaxis (or scale and polish), will allow you to start your home care with teeth that are free from plaque and tartar and will make your efforts easier and more effective. The daily brushing procedure should be pleasant for both you and your pet. Many pets enjoy the added attention while many owners look forward to close quality time spent with their companion. The supplies you need are a toothbrush, preferably one designed for pets, and a pet toothpaste. Most pets accept brushing very well if they are introduced to the procedure in a calm and patient way. THE BEST WAY IS AS FOLLOWS: 1. Start tooth brushing as early in life

as you can. It is easier to teach young animals to have their teeth brushed, and prevention is better than cure. 2. Make sure your pet is relaxed and comfortable – sitting in your lap, or being cuddled by another person. 3. Make the initial sessions brief and positive. Don’t push the matter if your pet is getting upset. It often takes several weeks for your pet to allow you to use a toothbrush and toothpaste on them without protest. 4. Start by using just your fingertips to rub along the teeth and gums. You can dip your finger into beef stock (dog) or tuna water (cat), or use a dab of a tasty pet toothpaste to make it more acceptable. 5. Approach from the side and start with just a few teeth, gradually increasing the number of teeth as your pet gets used to it. 6. Move up to using a facecloth or small finger brush, and finally onto a very soft bristle brush (which is needed to reach plaque hiding under the gum line). 7. Choose a toothpaste designed for pets. Aside from the more appealing

flavour, pet toothpaste is much safer for regular use. Human toothpaste is not designed to be swallowed, and pets are not good at the ‘rinse and spit’ method. 8. When introducing toothpaste, put a small amount on your finger and let your pet taste it. Then press the paste down into the bristles of the toothbrush so your pet can’t just lick it off. 9. Offer a reward at the end of the procedure, such as a walk or a game. 10. Have your pet’s teeth examined regularly by your vet. Tooth brushing slows down dental disease, but does not prevent it completely. Humans who brush twice a day still need to have their teeth cleaned professionally, and so do our pets. HERE IS A SUGGESTED PLAN FOR EASING INTO THE PROCESS: DAY 1: Gently pet and scratch the muzzle, slowly lifting the lip for about 30 seconds. Reward with praise and a treat at the end of the session. DAY 2: Repeat as above and also gently run your finger or finger toothbrush and a small amount of animal toothpaste over the pet’s teeth for 30-45 seconds. Reward with a treat and praise.

DAY 3: Repeat day 2, adding 15 seconds of time to running your finger or finger toothbrush over the pet’s teeth. Always reward with praise and a treat. DAY 4: If all is going well, run your finger over the teeth for 30 seconds and then gently insert the toothbrush and again run over the teeth for 30 seconds. DAY 5: Repeat as day 4 and increase the time by 30 seconds. DAY 6: Repeat as day 5 and gently rub your pet’s teeth. DAY 7: You know your pet best of all. If you feel that it is accepting the brushing well, gradually increase the brushing time until you are able to spend at least one minute on each side of the mouth. At any time that the animal is resisting, stop and wait until the next day. If your pet is still not accepting your efforts, contact the clinic for more advice. HELPFUL HINTS… • Be patient. Take time with the process or else your pet will become resistant. • Give lots of praise. It’s a new experience for you and your pet and praising your pet will make it more receptive.

• Remember to always put a small amount of animal toothpaste on your finger or toothbrush. Your pet will like the taste and will associate the good taste, treats and praise with tooth brushing. Reward your pet with treats at the end of each session. Remember, always make it fun! Stop immediately if there is any sign

n today’s world, anxiety is becoming a huge problem for people as well as animals. Our lives are becoming more stressful as we become more reactive to our hectic environment. Anxiety is essentially a fear of the future. We try and plan for every eventuality and in doing this, it’s often from a place of fear and protection for ourselves and those around us, essentially operating from a place of ‘worst case scenario’. How does this affect our animals? Our animals are connected to us in such a strong way, not only tapping into our facial expressions and body language, but also the biochemical changes in our body in response to our stress emotions. If you spend any amount of time around anxious people you will be aware of how your anxiety levels rise unintentionally. Although the anxiety wasn’t yours initially, your body soon takes it on and it becomes very real for you. Our animals respond in exactly the same way, and over time they take on our emotions. As in humans, stress is a normal emotional state and if experienced for

short periods, our bodies can re-balance physically, emotionally and biochemically without any lasting effects. If, however, the stress is sustained for a long period of time at high levels, establishing balance becomes harder and harder. Studies are showing that our animals are now experiencing high levels of stress that match ours. As an animal kinesiologist, I work with both the owner and the animal to overcome behaviour problems or illnesses that are the result of fear, anxiety and stress. This may be aggression, fear of people or other animals, excessive barking or protective behaviours. In every case I link the owner’s anxiety into the animal’s behaviour. It is not that the owner’s anxiety is the sole cause of the problem behaviour, but it prevents the animal being able to move on from it. An example is when a dog is fearful and reactive around other dogs due to being attacked on a previous occasion. The owner is not only still holding onto the stress of the attack, but is now also anxious about how the dog will react when another dog approaches. The anxiety from the owner feeds the anxiety of the dog and vice versa. Training
