wonder if all of the events unfolding in the world, as challenging as they might be to face, are assisting us to collectively get back to basics. Could the intense change be for our wake-up process and for the benefit of our beautiful planet? It seems timely this month (and every month really!!) to look at how we are living and being. So we’ve covered different aspects of sustainable living, getting back to basics with our food choices, our breath, finding ways to lift off the layers of untruth and choosing modalities that work for us personally; decluttering the mind and bringing ease to the body. And some of our contributors discuss clearing the clutter from our homes and offices too! Every thought, every conversation

and action we take can contribute to the collective consciousness of the planet. We are that powerful! And that is not about putting ourselves on a massive guilt trip if we are not sitting in lotus position with a green smoothie, in a bamboo hut. We are also a contribution to the planet with kindness, acknowledging self and others for the bright shining lights we be and being gentle with ourselves and others when we stuff up too! ORGANIC CHOCOLATE CAKE WITH RAW CHOCOLATE ICING FOOD FOR THE SOUL

RECIPE MARIE ANITA’S GLUTEN FREE HEALTH CAFÉ & BAKERY

GF, vegan and cane sugar free Makes 18 mini loaves or 1 large cake Organic ingredients: FOR THE CAKE ½ cup white rice flour ½ cup brown rice flour ½ cup white sorghum flour ½ cup tapioca flour 1 cup raw cacao powder 1 cup blanched almond meal ½ cup coconut sugar Pinch of salt 3 tsp baking powder 4 tbsp linseed meal mixed with 2/3 cup water 1 cup rice malt syrup ¾ cup coconut oil, melted 1 cup raw almond milk (homemade preferred) 2 medium apples, cored Pinch of xanthan gum FOR THE RAW CHOCOLATE ICING ½ cup cashews, soaked overnight ½ cup coconut oil, melted 1/3 cup raw cacao powder

¼ cup pure maple syrup 2/3 cup raw almond milk Pinch of salt Method: 1. Preheat oven to 180°C. I have used great silicon moulds for my mini loaves otherwise you may need to line your tins. 2. For the cake, sift all of the flours together in a large mixing bowl. Add the remaining dry ingredients and stir to combine. 3. In a blender, combine the almond milk, apples and xanthan gum. Blend until it becomes smooth. 4. Add the apple mix, linseed mix, rice malt syrup and coconut oil to the cake dry ingredients. 5. Stir to combine into a batter and pour into a mould or cake tin. 6. Bake mini loaves for 15-20 minutes. Once baked, allow to cool before icing. 7. For the icing, combine all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. 8. The icing can be poured on to the cool cake and put in the fridge to set. It will set in 30 minutes-1 hour.

O

ur cafe in Notting Hill is becoming famous for the açai bowls we serve. Açai is one of the most nutritious fruits in the world. We blend ours with one of the Bodyism supplements to increase the protein content in each bowl and to make it even more delicious. Our açai supplier, ‘Rayder’, is an activist for preventing deforestation in the Amazon and açai is one of the only no-timber products to come from the rainforest. So, make sure you choose high-quality frozen açai (you can find it in health stores or online) and feel proud that you are helping to save the planet and looking after your body, too. If you don’t have the Bodyism supplements, substitute them for a tablespoon of hemp seeds. Serves 2 Ingredients: 100g frozen açai pulp Half a frozen banana 1 scoop Bodyism Body Brilliance or Bodyism Protein Excellence ¼ cup almond milk ½ cup frozen mixed berries for the toppings

2 tbsp almond butter 2 tbsp Simply Granola (see page 102 in the book ‘Blueprint for Health’) 2 tbsp fresh berries Any other superfood you’d like: goji berries, hemp seeds, bee pollen, coconut flakes, chia seeds! Method: 1. Put the açai, banana, Bodyism supplement and almond milk into a blender. Whizz it up until all the açai is mixed (if there are any unblended pieces left, then add more almond milk). 2. Spoon into bowls. Add the toppings equally into each bowl. Start with the almond butter, then granola and finally sprinkle with berries and any other superfood you want! MAKE YOUR OWN SAUERKRAUT RECIPE PETE EVANS & HELEN PADARIN

Ingredients: 1 star anise 1 tsp whole cloves 600g cabbage (you can use green or red, or a mix of the two) 1½ tsp sea salt (or 3 tsp if not using the vegetable starter culture – see below) 2 tsp caraway seeds 2 tbsp juniper berries 1 small handful of dill fronds, roughly chopped ½ sachet vegetable starter culture (this will weigh 1-2g, depending on the brand) – optional Method: 1. You will need a 1.5 litre preserving jar with an airlock lid. 2. Place the star anise and cloves in a small piece of muslin, tie into a bundle and set aside. Remove the outer leaves of the cabbage. Choose one of the outer leaves, wash it well and set aside.

3. Place the cabbage in a large glass bowl. Sprinkle over the salt, caraway, juniper and dill. Massage the cabbage for 10 minutes to release its juices. Dissolve the starter (if using) in water according to packet instructions. Add to the cabbage mix with the bag of spices. Mix well. 4. Fill the prepared jar with the cabbage mix, pressing down well with a large spoon or potato masher to remove any air pockets. Leave 2cm of room free at the top. The cabbage should be completely submerged in its juices; add more water if necessary. 5. Take the clean cabbage leaf, fold it up and place it on top of the cabbage mixture, then add a small glass weight (a shot glass is ideal) to keep everything submerged. 6. Close the lid. Wrap a tea towel around the side of the jar to block out the light. Store in a dark place at 16-23°C for

8-15 days (add another 5 days if not using the starter culture). You can place the jar in an esky to maintain a more consistent temperature. 7. Chill before eating. This was contributed by integrative doctor, Dr Carlos Sanchez who sees the importance of clean, organic real food, as a fuel to the body to perform its normal functions and repair. Natural unprocessed food can help with the healing of the body. There needs to be a variety of ingredients to maximise the amount of vitamins and minerals that are co-factors in the multiple biochemical reactions that happen in our body. Using things like broth helps to heal our gut lining and probiotic foods to maintain a healthy gut flora plays an important role with our immune system. Blastocystis:

LITTLE BUG, BIG TROUBLE

I

have quite a few people booking in at the moment who have been diagnosed with a condition called Blastocystosis. Never heard of ‘blasto’ before? Not many even know how to pronounce it, let alone understand the detrimental impact this little bug can have on your health. To help shed some light on this common diagnosis, I thought I’d break it down and explain it a little deeper for those of you wondering exactly what it is, and how to manage it. WHAT IS IT? Blastocystosis (BLAST-oh-sis-TOSis) is an illness caused by a microscopic parasite, Blastocystis ‘hominis’. The parasite can live in our intestines and is protected by an outer shell, which makes it notoriously difficult to treat. It’s a pretty easy parasite to ‘catch’ as it can be picked up from any surface or by eating contaminated food or water. It’s quite likely that most of us have the blastocystis parasite and not have any symptoms. Signs of gastrointestinal distress caused by blastocystis infection

can include: abdominal pain, diarrhoea, constipation, excessive gas, slimy stools that tend to float, upset stomach or nausea. Patients also report fatigue, skin rashes, and joint pain. Some people with Blastocystis have severe symptoms, while others have no symptoms at all. HOW IS A BLASTOCYSTIS ‘HOMINIS’ INFECTION DIAGNOSED? Your doctor or naturopath will likely ask you to submit stool samples to check for the parasite. As Blastocystis ‘hominis’ can be quite difficult to diagnose, you may have to submit multiple stool specimens collected over a few days. Even in that case, the diagnostics may fail to detect the infection. And as is the case with many parasites, by the time you know you have it, you’ve probably already shared it with everyone around you. HOW CAN I TREAT BLASTOCYSTOSIS? Because it is a difficult parasite to treat, there are a number of different options that patients can choose. Some patients have reported success with several prescription medications

such as antibiotics and antifungals, but the success rates for treatment of Blastocystis ‘hominis’ are much lower than for other diseases. I’m a firm believer in anti-parasitic foods and herbs like garlic, papaya seeds, oregano and coconut oil when attacking parasite infestations. Many practitioners find value in a series of colonic treatments to improve the environment of your colon, not only flushing out the suspecting parasites but creating an environment where they don’t want to live. The thing I find really interesting about blastocystis is that some people experience horrible symptoms and feel quite unwell, whereas others remain asymptomatic indefinitely. My personal belief is that as humans we will never be able to cleanse our bodies 100% of all parasites for our entire lives, but what we should be doing in our modern world full of toxins is cleansing and resetting our bodies regularly so that parasitic colonies don’t have a chance to reproduce out of control. www.sunshinecolonics.com.au

GUT FEELING

is more important than you think

A

s a society, we are becoming much more conscious of the relationship between what we eat and our general well-being. We know a lot more about the benefits of certain foods, the potential damage caused by others, and what may need to be avoided by those with intolerances and inflammatory conditions. Many of us, including the majority of my patients, make a conscious effort to consume food in ways that will benefit their health. One area we are only starting to understand is the role played by the gut on our overall well-being – and I’m not referring to size here! I am talking about the mini eco-system inside our gut comprising mainly of different bacteria, as well as some other micro-organisms – the microbiome. We all have our own unique gut community, which changes over time due to our diet, lifestyle and overall health. We are now beginning to realise that the relationship between

these factors and gut health is far more complex, and more important than what we had previously thought in the prevention and treatment of a range of different conditions and diseases. These include: eczema, autism, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, candida and a range of autoimmune diseases and allergies. There have also been recent studies showing a noticeable influence of gut health on mood, depression and anxiety. There are many microbiotaenhancing foods that provide a valuable source of non-digestible compounds that encourage the growth of beneficial micro-organisms in the gut. These are known as prebiotics, and your health care professional can work with you to determine those best suited to you and your individual needs. In addition, one of the more recent areas of focus is on probiotics – these are the ‘good’ bacteria that can be found in certain fermented foods or

prepared in concentrated forms such as a capsule. There are a wide range of beneficial bacteria that fall into this category. Some of the more common varieties that are readily available provide good, general support for the gut microbiome. I

f you’re a lover of idyllic Australian countryside, fresh food and sustainable farming, then you’ve probably already caught an episode or two of ‘River Cottage Australia’, currently airing weeknights on SBS. Filmed on location in the southern coastal region of Central Tilba, NSW, ‘River Cottage Australia’ and host Paul West have inspired millions of viewers to aspire to a more sustainable lifestyle. When I caught up with Paul, he was holidaying with his young family in Melbourne, after several seasons of television production and the relentless schedule that goes with it. With a new addition to the family, he was enjoying making precious time for family and fatherhood. Paul never set out to be a celebrity chef, or sustainable farmer. It was only after a chance suggestion by a friend, and encouragement from his wife that he applied online for the coveted hosting role on the Australian version of ‘River Cottage’. The rest is history. Paul first chose cooking as a potential career out of necessity. He needed employment, and felt a trade that allowed him to cook for family and friends three times a day in a home environment, would be a smart choice. “It was for both personal reasons and survival; I couldn’t really cook to save myself. When I left home I realised that mum had been cooking for us for two decades and I didn’t know how to do it!” Paul grew up on a diet of meat and three vege, so his culinary adventures were yet to come. With such humble beginnings, I was curious to uncover what had led him to embrace growing food, and the concept of sustainable farming. 12

Paul believes that growing and cooking food are fundamentally tied. “It first really clicked that I wanted to cook, and I wanted to grow food, when I was staying on a farm as a wwoofer.” WWOOF is an international movement that connects willing workers with organic farmers, exchanging food and accommodation for a working contribution to the farm. At 21 years old, Paul was offered a place on an organic farm in Northern Tasmania. “I stayed with this old French guy. He had a very River Cottagey type farm, he’d grown up in the South of France, and he was a carpenter. He’d moved to Australia in his twenties, and had never left. He was kind of retirement age, and was really going about re-creating the life in Southern France for himself in the North of Tasmania. He had 20 acres, with beautiful stone walls, vegetable gardens, horses, geese, ducks, pigs, cows, handdug wells, stone-lined cellars and all this amazing, amazing stuff, and I’d never really been exposed to that before. I grew up in a regional area in the Upper Hunter Valley, but it was not that type of farm. As I was living and exchanging with this guy, I didn’t even think this type of thing was real, it was kind of like fairy tale stuff, where you have all these kind of different animals on the farm, and you work in the sunshine, and you cook from the land, and all the neighbours drop in, but it was real! “I guess it’s only since I’ve been in the position where I am now, and people ask me about where it all began in retrospect, what an impact it had being on that farm. I realised by being there, there’s a real synchronicity between cooking and growing, and the two are really inseparable. If you grow it, you’re going to cook it! So, if you can do

l u a P t Wes both, then it’s a wonderful dual skill set to have. So I’d realised I had none of the skills to do either of those, I wasn’t much of a gardener either. I mean my mum was an excellent gardener, she had a huge mainly ornamental garden she’d carved out of a bare paddock and turned it into this lush oasis. So for me, every school holidays was basically spent moving a tonne of mulch with a wheelbarrow and a shovel, which was like punishment when I should have been enjoying my school holidays with

At the time I couldn’t think of anything worse than gardening! “I’d like to think that the trajectory that my career has taken as a cook would serve as an inspiration that nearly anyone can cook. It doesn’t have to be in your blood. It was certainly learned for me.” If Paul was to send a message to Australians, it would be that our nourishment shouldn’t be taken lightly. “It’s probably one of the highest priorities we have. Getting truly nutrient dense

food, is not about being a good cook; it’s not about being a MasterChef contestant or being a foodie or taking photos of every meal and putting it on social media. It’s about cooking, and taking high quality ingredients and turning it into something that nourishes yourself and your family and friends. That’s the epitome, it’s an act of self-love, and not something we should be doing for recognition. To get really good, beautiful, nutrient dense food, it can’t be grown in a big industrial manner, it needs to

be grown by someone who cares and someone who loves what they do and that then comes through in the quality of the food. Once I learned to cook, it gave me a deeper appreciation for the ingredients. You don’t need to do a great deal to have a tasty dish, whereas if you use really bad ingredients or use things that are right out of season or meat that has led a miserable life, it’s hard to make that taste good, even for a chef.” Paul is the first to admit that everyone has different constraints and pressures, and that it won’t always be easy to change the way we currently access and consume food overnight, but he does suggest we can make small adjustments when and where we can. “Rather than eating a lot of meat, eat a little bit of high quality meat that relies on grass, outside in the sun, that’s been grown by someone that has respect for the animal. What you’re really buying is nutrition, and an animal that has good nutrition.” Life after River Cottage means Paul will be back home in Newcastle and can focus on growing his own fruit and vegetables, which he hopes to document online. “What I found with my experience with River Cottage is that a lot of people found it very aspirational, but not a lot of people found it practical. They don’t live on 20 acres. They’d love to, but in reality they live in a suburban environment, so by growing food myself in the backyard and coming from that River Cottage farm and that mindset, I can show people that you don’t need to live on 20 acres in the Tilba or a beautiful property in Northern Tasmania to be able to access good food. M

any years ago when my 23-year-old son was food shopping with me he said, “Vegetables grow in the supermarket.” That blew me away and got me thinking that unless we show children nature and how things work, they will assume things like this. The next day it was a trip to the nursery to buy vegetable seedlings to plant. The whole process of growing your own food fascinated my son and the best part was that he loved sneaking in to the garden to eat the fresh snow peas from the vine. Funny thing was, if I gave him snow peas on his plate he would not eat them but from our vine they were ‘yummy and real’.

I share these insights, as working with so many of the Millennium Children® this awareness is more predominant now. But some children don’t have any awareness about food and where it comes from. And many have processed, take away food. However, when I show children our garden or take children through the bush on one of my workshops to explain

the healing properties of flowers and trees, their gorgeous minds light up and they get so inspired. We make a plan of what they can grow and why and what it would do to make their mind, body and spirit feel all ‘yummy’. The sheer delight on their faces (even the ones that do not like outside play and prefer computers, what I call STAR Children), suddenly light up and express that they want to have their own food from their garden to their plate. Children ‘feed’ off the parent or carer and if you are excited and see the value in something, so will they. In this case if you get excited about having a delicious edible garden, can you imagine what they will feel like? The Millennium Children® have a gift of sensitivity and intolerances and they require pure food and environments such as gardens and parks to play in. It is all about ‘back to basics’ to empower these divine souls. And that includes teenagers too, not just young ones. How does our ENERGY, WORDS and EMOTIONS affect the FOOD we EAT? WORDS AMANDA MACKAY

H

ave you heard about mindful eating? I’m sure some of you have, focusing in the moment when consuming a meal, appreciating flavours, textures, where food was sourced and feeling your body appreciating its fuel. Sounds personal doesn’t it? Can words and energy change or build dynamics, flow and connection during a family meal? I have a full table at dinner time with four children and whoever else happens to be there. When they were little, I started the ritual of ‘best part of your day’, where each person shared something special, interesting or funny. When the day had been challenging everyone still needed to find the good. Each member of the family was heard (vital in a family large or small), they learnt the ability to focus on a positive and verbalise their feelings, thoughts and ideas, creating connection and our meal could be eaten with balanced emotions.

For parents or carers, it’s learning to listen without editing, correcting, modifying or directing the conversation. Speaking but not being heard and not having the skills to express thoughts and feelings, is one of the most common difficulties I witness in clients and it all starts in the early years. I have spoken to many clients who struggle with being able to communicate with children (this does vary during the teenage years!). One thing they had in common was trying to broach ‘issues’ during dinner. What child wants to eat while being grilled about grades, pushed to share uncomfortable feelings or being shamed for whatever it is the parent doesn’t like about their behaviour? None. Do you enjoy that horrid conversation with Aunt Pru when she pulls your life apart? Imagine how children feel with the imbalance of power. Meal conversation applies to any social interaction. So complaining,

denigrating a colleague or recounting a past personal slight, generates energy of ‘not good enough’, ‘victim’ and ‘anger’, food then absorbs these emotions. When the plate hits the table in front of you, do you look at the server and say ‘thank you’? Do the people you’re feeding offer appreciation and are there manners when passing condiments? The energy of recognition and gratitude creates respect and connection. Throughout preparing a meal, smile and feel love for those you’re giving to. If you’re receiving, feel the blessing of being taken care of. When dining out, connect with the wait staff and compliment the chef (having worked in a commercial kitchen, I know how much it’s valued). Weave the fabric of relationships at the table, create fun and memories, choose the feelings, hold the space for individuality, imagination and inspiration, and infuse the food with good intention, connection and love. www.amandamackay.com.au

I

nformation revealed during a ‘Holographic Kinetics’ healing session truly proves what really exists in the invisible world. Clients may have a belief system that we are all alone in this world and yet, when their healing session has finished, they know that their eyes have been opened by their own spirit, no-one else’s. Their own part in their past is revealed. One of my clients was seeking help for a recurring dream involving torturing and killing someone. It was becoming more vivid, disturbing sleep and everyday life, and the client was reluctant to go to bed and sleep and rest. Upon entering the spirit healing session and moving into a past life, the client’s spirit revealed the dream was actually a replay of the client being tortured and killed. Seeing the energy interference in the perpetrator, the client was initially in disbelief at what

they saw, and why it was being done. The actual energy interference entered into the client’s field and was coming through the life cycles with the spirit, tormenting the client with behaviour problems and relationship issues. When we are extracting a negative energy interference, all our clients experience the same feeling: they feel it within their body and hear what it says. They all feel relieved and lighter once it has been removed for good. For the dreaming client, we were able to clear all the trauma and negative energy that had been locked in, resulting in peaceful sleep and calmness… with an ongoing positive ripple throughout their daily life. Another recent client was extremely racist and righteous in their gender role, and was shaken awake on seeing that in a past life they were indeed a little African girl, raped and killed. The reality is that we are all truly the

eing a healer and a member of the worldwide community service organisation known as ‘Lions’ are my great passions in life. On 7th June this year ‘Lions’ turned 100 years old and our motto is making our community a better place to live, work and grow. It was founded by Melvin Jones in Chicago, America, and in Australia it began in Lismore 70 years ago. Our aim is to complete 100 community projects between 7/6/17 and 7/6/18. Healers and ‘Lions’ share similar values in that both groups want to improve their communities. Being a holistic healer means we are interested in engaging and developing the whole person. This covers all the different levels: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. It’s the concept that makes the human being multi-dimensional. Since Helen Keller challenged ‘Lions’ to become ‘Knights of the Blind’ in 1925, we have improved eye health and eye care for hundreds of millions of people around the world. Today, 80% of vision impairments are preventable or curable, so our service is more important than

ever before. Lions and Leos screen vision, educate our communities, build clinics and support the blind and visually impaired through assistive technology and vocational training programs. We work to preserve the precious gift of sight for the world. ‘Lions Recycle 4 Sight Australia Inc’ is a not-for-profit volunteer group operating under a direct licence issued by the ‘Lions International Board of Directors’ in 1998 and currently collects close to 600,000 pairs a year of used spectacles, sunglasses, new frames, used lens, (unused) contact lens and a variety of medical support equipment. The program cleans, grades and labels 450,000 pairs annually of used spectacles and sunglasses at our three centres in Queensland. The labelled end product is packed in boxes of 200 pairs; half of one prescription and 100 of the next higher prescription, under quality control rules. These are then shipped to third world countries. ‘Lion’s Hearing Dogs’, is a not-forprofit organisation that provides hearing dogs and training for use by the hearing

impaired people throughout Australia. ‘Australian Lions Drug Awareness Foundation’ promotes awareness and prevention of abuse from alcohol and other drugs. There is also a ‘Disaster and Emergency’ response where money is collected to provide resources and ensure the support goes to where it’s needed. Other programmes assist young people to become well rounded. For example, ‘Youth of the Year – Peace Poster and Essay’ encourages youth and builds their confidence with public speaking. This describes the way many of us function in our relationship with our body. Our body is always there, contributing to us, taking care of us, making sure we get where we need to go. And often times our response is judgment of how bad and wrong it is, or we choose to ignore it completely. What if you could create a different relationship with your body; one of kindness, caring and communion? What if you began to ask your body questions and truly listen to what it has to say? Below are 5 things that your body would say to you if you were listening. 1. Do one thing a day to nurture, acknowledge and appreciate me. Touching your body is one way to

communicate with and nurture it. When you wake up in the morning, for three minutes, gently touch your body as if it belongs to somebody you care for. 2. Stop judging me. When you wake up in the morning, make a conscious choice to stop the litany of judgment that you start each day with. Instead, thank your body and tell it how grateful you are for it. 3. I was created to have fun. What if the sole purpose of life was to have fun? Would that change the way you do things? Is it fun for your body to be touched? To feel the sun on its skin? To walk with its feet in the grass? What if you started to have fun now? 4. Ask me about me. How much have you done to your body because somebody said it would create a result? How many diets, foods, herbs, fads, have you tried because

somebody said? Ask your body. Your body has the answers if you start asking. 5. Ask me what it would take to get me to look the way you want me to. If you want your body to look a certain way, first acknowledge the greatness of it, as it is and then ask what it would take to shift some things and create some change. Your body is happy to comply. DYING with DIGNITY WORDS SORAYA SARASWATI

D

ying with dignity, also known as Euthanasia (a less appealing term), is something we only think about when we are personally touched by the suffering of a loved one. I had never thought too much about it until recently when my mother found herself in the final throws of cancer. She was brave, facing her failing body with a clear mind till the last breath. Cancer can be a very cruel disease and watching her deterioration made me think about the lack of choice in Australia to ‘die with dignity’. As a personal choice, this has a growing following, largely brought into the Australian public eye in recent years by Andrew Denton. It’s about offering a personal choice around one’s dying to avoid unnecessary pain and suffering. There are staunch believers on both sides of this debate but I wonder if it should be about the very personal choice of the one who is dying? My mother was ready to die, and she expressed this to us many times. An

animal lover herself, she would say, “I would not let an animal suffer like this. Take me to the vet, I am ready to go.” At first diagnosis, there is always hope and so there should be. Any illness is a journey with hidden jewels. My mother’s choice was the chemo and radiation pathway. We all supported ‘her choice’ in this and many new friendships and meetings during this time were forged between my mother and father and cancer support groups, who helped with the daily travel to the hospital. Sadly though, for her weakened elderly body, the drugs succeeded in intensifying her suffering. We all came to accept her final bout with cancer would be terminal. The first few months of the decline of her illness were a blessing, giving both mum and the family time to accept and prepare for her passing. We knew she was dying, yet we still laughed and talked while Mum was still well enough to engage with us. She still felt loved and supported at home with her family.

But the last four weeks seemed unnecessarily cruel and drawn out. Her loving family found it heart wrenching to watch her painful decline day after day, leaving her a mere skeleton unable to eat, move or speak more than 2-3 words, yet still conscious enough to suffer both physically, mentally and emotionally, while watching her loved ones looking on, helpless to comfort her. In the last ten days, we all took turns to join my father by her side, ready to offer any moment of comfort. In the end, she died alone and conscious late one night after a nurse checked in on her. “Is there anything you need Beryl,” the nurse asked. Mum shook her head softly and when the nurse returned ten minutes later, she was gone. And, we were left with the question: Was her drawn-out suffering necessary? T

he first thing we all do instinctively when born is to inhale, and take the first gulp of air which signifies our arrival, our soul has landed, earthed and birthed. We are here, we have inhaled the world into our awareness. The last thing we do before we leave our earthly body is to exhale, and our soul travels with that last breath, there is release, letting go and surrender. From that first moment of birth, the breath of life travels through us in many inhalations and exhalations, being the quiet witness to how we live, the choices we make, the way we show up. Most of our breathing through life is almost automatic, without regard to the depth of power this life-giving instinct offers. Our first inhalation and last exhalation define our whole life, a beginning and an end point, yet in each day, every breath can become a whole new lifetime, so our days are filled with opportunities to experience more life, more love, more joy, more peace by

simply connecting to the breath and allowing its wisdom to guide us towards the inner truth of our true self and soul. We have this incredible tool; for changing any moment in our lives. The simplicity of the breath is so profound, incredibly transformative, cleansing releasing, altering and powerful in realigning to self. Most times we forget about it until we become ill, have shortness of breath, are stressed, emotional or have panic or anxiety attacks. Watch a newborn breathe… it is deep, it expands into the belly, massaging organs via the movement of the diaphragm. As we mature, we become shallow breathers, into the upper chest which results in a cyclic process of stress, which means we have a ‘normal state’ of activity and response. Stress creates shallow breathing, and shallow breathing creates stress situations in the body. No wonder when we start working with breathing techniques, we feel better and more at peace. We are often told to take a deep

breath before we attempt something we may have feared, we breathe and count to 10 if feeling stressed or angry, we pant when in pain, count breaths when exercising, focus on the breath in meditation, purposefully slow our breathing to a measured count when panicked or anxious. We have this incredible tool to navigate all parts of our lives, to alter any situation we are in, to build a bridge to something else more aligned. Each breath carries us from one moment to the next, the thread of life. Once we start to connect to it regularly, we will see big changes in our lives. Following the breath cycles, creates a pause which allows us to drop into an inner sanctum of wisdom. We can respond more truthfully, instead of reacting defensively. sat in the stillness of my newfound resonance, and felt my heart expand until tears rolled down my cheeks. I knew I was feeling my own true resonance that Shelley Munn was guiding me to experience this day. Earlier, I had been sceptical about this one-day workshop. However, surprisingly I learnt my illness came from a family curse through my genetic and ancestral line, apparently common, and a traumatic experience from childhood; a medical operation and long-term poor digestion, amongst other things. I felt the molecules of my body pull apart and dance in the space, and my reality shifted. Shelley stated this shift is what creates the healing-space for access to a portal of intuitive-knowing, the timeless realm of influence. Was I in a Tibetan monastery, experiencing divine awakening? I could have been, but I knew I was in Brisbane Bayside, smelling the salt water of the nearby ocean. Even though everyone’s chants were different, our sounds harmonised. The resonance we created felt amazing as space expanded, time seemed to dissolve and my body felt formless, free and relaxed. Shelley also highlighted that this is the essence of the healing process. We then moved into the heart-

resonant exercise and, wow, I caught a glimpse of my own angelic self. I felt so loved beyond what I have ever felt before. At that moment, I intuitively knew this process was beyond conventional forms of healing. Through this resonant intonation, I felt deep, heart-impressions of intuitive insight about my own health and that of my daughter’s, and knew how to handle the situation with her health issues. I was reeling with gratitude. Now I knew I could do these harmony resonance correctional exercises for myself with great effect. I felt my body as an orchestra of cellular-resonance, and I’m now the conductor of my life. I’m learning to direct these cellular musicians to play harmoniously, dissolving issues, and attracting harmonious life experiences. The impossible has become possible. Does ‘MAKE UP SEX’ really work? WORDS JANET McGEEVER

M

ake up sex is a common remedy for relationship issues. “We had great sex and then everything was better.” Sex is a huge source of emotion and is often used as a fix-it for emotions. Sure it can work – it can relieve the tension built up by stress or our emotions quite well, but the relief is often short-lived. Why? Two main reasons are emotions and how we have sex. Emotions are the silent killers in relationships. They are often the reason why we are left standing saying, “Where has the love gone?” Behind every judgment, every criticism, every unloving act, every unloving word, is an unmet emotion. A feeling fully felt in the present moment, like grief, anger, frustration, fear, is pure and innocent and can be over quite quickly. But most commonly, these pure feelings can turn sour if we repress or suppress them, or even

project and blame others. Mastering our emotions is a life-long journey. HOW SEX CAN CAUSE EMOTIONS Woman is the container – she receives and holds. When sex is an emotional and stress release, unfortunately she is the one left holding all that tension. And then we wonder why women are accused of being ‘so emotional’. It can be extremely common for women to feel a growing anger and resentment around sex if she feels her body is being used as a release. But men are also affected. The spiritual masters tell us that when energy moves downward in the body in discharge, that tension is the by-product or outcome. Conversely, when energy moves upward, as in Tantric sexual practice, the result is silence, contentment and joy. When men start to bring awareness to ‘after an ejaculation’, they notice that they feel a kind of separation and

resulting emotion (tension), even if subtle. A slow sex approach, moving away from tension and towards relaxation, away from sensational sex to more sensitivity, will allow the dispersing tension in a more healthy way than releasing it. But if they are both unaware of the link between emotion and sex, the cycle begins again – getting emotional, finding a way to relieve the emotion/tension, having sex, feeling good for a while and so it goes. Both are left to wade through the murky waters of layers of emotion, without even realising that it may be from the fast and furious passionate romp they had a few days ago. y beloved husband and I have just returned from running our annual retreat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean on a beautiful island in Fiji. By some unknown grace may the peace, healing and joy of island time settle into your being as you read these words. The days were gentle, slow and brimming with connection. Island time is a deep exhale, a reset button back to what truly matters. From the moment you wake, until your head rests upon your pillow, nourishment wraps you. Time melts away. There is no need to know what tomorrow may bring, for today is already enough. There is space to remember that I am already enough too. All that is needed for peace to return is that I be willing to learn and discover what precious gifts exist in my heart that wish to make their way out into the world. Somehow by creating

space and caring for me, everything else is taken care of. I love sharing this special place. Every time I visit here a part of me heals and remembers the truth. I remember the stillness and peace that always exist in my own heart. I remember that there are times that we all forget what matters most. T

he first steps, the ABCs… depending on your mindset, may be tiny little matters but in reality, it’s the foundations which are of great importance, once we get those right, everything flows. H

aving worked in holistic healthcare for over 25 years, I have engaged in a smorgasbord of modalities and courses – physical, psychological, orthomolecular, genetic, spiritual and energetic – determined to find that one thing that seemed to elude me, the modality that would help my clients deeply shift, giving them the best opportunity to heal. Brought together under the umbrella of naturopathy, this ongoing search for deeper meaning has kept me searching. What I have deduced from this arduous journey, is that healing ultimately comes back to one thing – energy. It is the one thing most influenced by our thoughts, feelings, habits, behaviours, genetics, nutrition, diet, expectations and purpose. It is impacted by, and impacts upon, everything we experience in life. It is the main thing lagging when we are ill, unhappy or struggling. It also determines how well and how quickly we heal. Could this be because we ARE

energy? A mass of vibrating molecules in a quantum field of space. Energy, coalesced into matter, moulded by alterations in frequency and vibration. The result of the unseen subatomic world hiding in quantum physics; all expressions of energy. I realised that my life of searching was taking me full circle. It all started with a Reiki course at 18 years old; now at 48, I work with the next generation of energy medicine, Reconnective Healing and The Reconnection. This work has brought about results like no other modality I have used or experienced. It touches people at a level that nutrition and intellectual concepts could never reach. n this age of modern technologies, it is wise to get back to basics in order to understand fully how energies affect us. How to be

PRESENT AND AWARE

I

t is popular these days to extol the benefits of living in the present. There are probably as many ideas of how to do this, as there are people talking about it. For this reason, it is wise to examine the credentials of your teachers and test their advice carefully. After all, it is our mind that we are dealing with and, as most of us that are walking a spiritual path come to understand, ‘everything comes from the mind’. When choosing a particular spiritual path, we can trace it historically, if it is old enough. For example, some of the traditions of Buddhism connect the lineage of a teaching through reincarnation as well as from master to student. There is a series of teachings called Dzogchen which can be traced back over centuries. Dzogchen is about discovering our real nature which is pure and perfected. Today, there are some teachers of Dzogchen who have students around the world and the International Dzogchen Community

is led by Tibetan master and scholar, Chögyal Namkhai Norbu. The Australian Community has its centre at the Glass House Mountains on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland and in November we will be holding a retreat where there will be an introduction to the state of Dzogchen and everyone is welcome to attend. The theme of ‘Presence and Awareness’ will be experienced through both stillness and movement. These two states are not necessarily dualistic and when we become more anchored in the present, fully aware of all that our senses are experiencing, we can be present in both stillness and movement. Our teacher has given his students a variety of different ways to become more present and aware. There are meditation and chanting practices, contemplative dance on a coloured mandala, energetic and joyful Khaita – a form of Tibetan dance and Yantra Yoga. Yantra Yoga comes from ancient tantric traditions in Tibet and has been

passed from master to student in an unbroken lineage for many centuries. The Yantra exercises, which engage all three aspects of our body, voice (or energy) and mind, promote profound relaxation. The focus of Yantra Yoga is not on perfecting the positions, but on how smooth and mindful our breathing is while we are doing the movements. Hence we can harmonise our energy, or prana which is important for our physical and mental health and we can learn how to relax, in a deep and profound way. aking on someone else’s illness is a real thing. As a healer I have personally taken on lots of other people’s physical illnesses. I was recently studying in Sydney and working on a man who had Lyme’s Disease. The consciousness of Lyme’s Disease is ‘nothing works for me’. I went home and the next day had a fever and a virus, I did my usual energetic healing techniques to no avail. So I resorted to taking a natural supplement which kills all viruses very quickly. I felt worse the next day and couldn’t go in to my study course for two days. I ended up resorting to Panadol but to my surprise, it did nothing for my fever, I just felt even worse. After Christie miscarried in late 2012, she was seeking answers and came across a book called ‘The Visitor’ by Karen McDermott. Her passion for writing was reignited after reading this book, as was her wish to reconnect with her spiritual self. She studied tarot, wrote, read and researched everything she could. Some deep, inner work followed, as did the birth of her son, Nate. After Nate was born with a congenital heart defect, Christie decided to leave her career in childcare to become a stay-at-home Mum. Reading tarot, energy healing, writing and publishing became her fulltime job. In early 2016, Christie and her mother, Lauren, went on a life-changing trip to Nepal. Whilst there, they met some amazing locals, and in particular, connected with the owner of a lodge in Pokhara who was starting a charity to rebuild a local school that had been damaged in the 2015 earthquakes. recently had a conversation with a close friend and the same words came out of her mouth that I’ve been hearing for over ten years! “I just gotta sort all this sh** out.” I said, “Mandy (name politely changed) you have been telling me that for ten years, every single week!” Then came the same excuses and deflecting etc.

This is the kindest way to say this… she is a hoarder and it is stealing her joy and her time! She is constantly shuffling piles from one side to the other. I have so many friends and family members that are hoarders. I have cleaned out their stuff and hired people to help move the mountains. It doesn’t last long… and it was painful for them to part with anything. I will be honest I am the complete opposite and sometimes I have to rebuy things I have moved on. I spoke to a wonderful psychologist Susan Mellor on the Gold Coast to get her take on what’s behind the hoarding of ‘stuff’… the thinking, the fears, etc, and here’s what she had to say. “Hoarding does come in many degrees ranging from clutter to extreme hoarding. For example, it is a known fact that most women expose themselves to over 200 chemicals a day through their personal care products alone. But regardless of how many fads, diets, ingredients or varied opinions, there are some self-care basics that most holistic health therapists, experts, coaches and scientists generally agree on in relation to self-care. The list may seem pretty straightforward, even basic, yet many struggle to adhere to it. • Choose whole, real and natural foods over refined processed ones • SLOW eating is not a phenomena – eat seasonal, local, organic and whole food where you can • Aim to eat a combination of fresh vegetables at each meal • Reduce your sugar intake, including raw treats • Look after your gut, fermented foods can be a wonder food for many

ood health and wellbeing doesn’t happen by itself. Sure, there are some people with genetics to die for who seem to be able to eat, drink and do anything they like. But we all know a lack of self-care soon catches up. The reality is good health isn’t just about how you look – it’s about how you feel and most importantly, having awareness. To be healthy these days, it seems you need a degree in psychology, science, nutrition and exercise. There is so much information, so much marketing and advertising, it can be difficult to ascertain what is hype and what is reality. With so much overwhelm, the key is to keep it simple. Get back to basics. And above all do not believe everything you read, see or hear. For example will a cream honestly eradicate wrinkles in seven days? Does a chocolate spread on white bread, really seem like a healthy sandwich for your children? Will eating meat make your baby an Einstein? To be healthy and happy there are

• Drink plenty of clean water each day • Supplement wisely, know what you are taking and what you need it for. • Move your body regularly and include exercise that raises your heart rate for at least twenty minutes; aim for three times a week. • Include weight bearing and strength enhancing exercise – this could be yoga, the gym, even incidental exercise like maintaining your home with housework and gardening • Rejuvenate your mental and physical health with good quality sleep • Manage your stress levels, know when to ask for help • Practise mindfulness, take a moment at least a few times a day with meditation, being present and aware • Practise simple daily self-care rituals using essential oils, like a lavender bath, a lemon and pine inhalation, spritzing with frankincense or diffusing oils like neroli, chamomile, orange and geranium for a stress-free environment. www.twenty8.com

DIY BOTANICAL PERFUMES WORDS NARELLE CHENERY

M

ost of us are aware that we should be avoiding any consumer product that contains synthetic fragrances. They’re toxic for us, and toxic for the environment. But we all want to smell nice, right? Whilst we may not be able to formulate our own Chanel NO 5 with a few essential oils, we will be able to create our own, non-toxic, totally unique fragrance that could become our signature scent! One of the most common ways to formulate a personal fragrance is by composing a balance of essential oils using three different categories based on oil evaporation rates: top, middle and base notes. TOP NOTES (10-30% of your blend) introduce the perfume and are usually thin and mobile, with uplifting, refreshing and fleeting attributes. Examples of top notes: bergamot, cinnamon, clary sage, eucalyptus, grapefruit, lemon, lime, mandarin,

orange, peppermint, petitgrain, spearmint, tangerine, tea tree. MIDDLE NOTES (30-60% of your blend) are usually full-bodied, complex, and comprise the theme or focal point of the blend. Examples of middle notes: black pepper, cardamom, clary sage, chamomile, cinnamon, cypress, fir balsam, geranium, ginger, helichrysum, jasmine, lavender, lemongrass, neroli, rose, rosemary, tonka bean, ylang ylang. BASE NOTES (20-40% of the blend) are the foundation on which the perfume is built and are dense, heavy, strong, deep, tenacious, and supportive (some with fixative qualities). Examples of base notes: agarwood, Peru balsam, cedarwood, cistus, clove, cocoa, frankincense, labdanam, myrrh, oakmoss, orris root, patchouli, sandalwood, spikenard, tobacco, vanilla, vetiver, violet leaf. DILUTION – Dilute them in a carrier and let them infuse for a week or two

before using: Alcohol base perfume (vodka): 5-25% concentration. Oil base perfume (jojoba is best): 15-30% concentration. STORAGE AND PRESERVATION – The aromatic compounds in perfumes denature and break down if improperly stored in the presence of heat, light, and oxygen. Perfumes are best preserved when kept in their original packaging when not in use, and refrigerated. To give you a kick start, below are the base formulas I used when formulating my Miessence Botanical Perfumes. Floral – Soft, floral, and romantic. Oriental – Enchanting, sensual and exotic. Citrus – Tangy, fresh and uplifting. Gourmand – Divinely decadent and dulcet. Chypre – Vibrant, earthy and green. Fougere – Warm, sensual and elegant. www.miessence.com

Do you look like your furry friend? WORDS THERESA ELMES

H

ave you noticed some animals and their owners look alike? Have you noticed too, they often seem to share character and personality traits? There’s something about the way animals and their guardians are, around each other, which makes them seem alike. How can this be? Aside from getting the same style of haircut or wearing half their fur on your clothes, there’s some brain activity that could be a clue. Animals and humans possess mirror neurons. Mirror neurons are particularly active when an individual visually observes or is otherwise aware of a purposeful or goal-orientated action, say by sound, touch, smell or other ways. Which means awareness, and mirror neurons, can be activated when an activity is carried out in a location other than which the ‘recipient’ of the awareness is.

Mirror neurons are also anticipatory and when what they anticipate gets confirmed, there’s a sort of “Yeah, touch down!” congratulate yourself moment, and that data gets filed away for reference. This process contributes to building self and other awareness, as well as our relationships and interactions within a network or environment. To put this in the context of animals and their guardians looking alike, we add in quality of social interaction with a social network. In familial and social networks, animals included, we define quality through a sense of connection, acceptance and love, particularly when it’s unconditional. A successful social interaction or social bonding triggers a release of endorphins – those feel good hormones associated with joy, happiness and love. Endorphins help biochemical bonding with one another. As we don’t use a common spoken language with animals, it’s clear that quality and complexity of relationship is therefore not word dependent. Rather, it relies on things like touch, look, smell, intonation of vocalisation, and body language. That’s right – the same things mirror neurons can be triggered by, when

accompanied by purposeful action. As stated earlier, mirror neuron awareness is elastic and not location dependent. When combined with a successful social bonding, there exists between biochemically bonded individuals a stronger energetic resonance or morphic field than between strangers. We are more consciously aware of one another and seek to enhance our endorphin bliss through behaving in ways that provide that reward. In doing things that make us all happy, we might behave similarly. Combined with research indicating mental, physical and emotional states of health are contagious amongst members of a social network, we have a recipe for physically looking, behaving and seeming very much like our animal companions. This is great news because quality of social interaction is said to be a greater predictor of happiness and longevity than diet and exercise. Our animal friends are more than just pets!

I

f you’re male and you own an animal friend, you may be interested to know that your chances of attracting the opposite sex are 30 percent higher than a male who doesn’t! And the news gets better. If you’re male and you actually bought your friend from an animal shelter, then you’re practically assured of never having to spend another lonely night in front of the TV comforted only by beer, pizza and of course the forementioned snoring shelter pooch. These romantic incentives for pet owners were discovered as part of a mini survey that attempted to investigate the ‘pulling power’ of pets. It was good news for pet owners, particularly males. But in reality, surveys about the benefits of pets have been ongoing and these days science is starting to back up what many previously regarded as animal lovers’ hearsay. A Baker Medical Research Institute study showed that animal owners had cholesterol levels 2% lower than those without pets. Not world shattering, but when you consider that this can lower your chances of having a heart attack by 4%, well worth considering. Animal owners also had lower levels of

triglyceride fats in their blood and lower blood pressure. Some of the other findings in recent surveys in the United States and the UK are also worthy of note, although most won’t come as any huge surprise. People who own dogs tend to exercise more and be more socially interactive. Being a conscientious dog owner means that at the very least you’ll take your dog for a walk once a day and probably twice. Many senior people live alone and their daily dog walks not only get them out of the house, they also increase their opportunities to chat with neighbours and other animal owners. However many elderly people refrain from taking on a pet because they’re worried about their pets’ care if they get sick and have to go to hospital. RSPCA Qld has introduced a program to assist elderly pet owners and/or those coping with poor health. When hospitalisation is required and there is no one to look after the patient’s pets, RSPCA Qld may be able to help through their Pet Legacy Program. Through this Program, which has helped hundreds of people across Queensland, elderly folk can enjoy the

companionship of animals, in their homes, right until the end. They can have peace of mind knowing that, should an emergency occur, the staff and volunteers from RSPCA Qld will be there to help and to care for their pets. In the event of the owner’s death, RSPCA Qld will ensure that the pets will go on to have the best possible quality of life with very carefully selected guardians.
