ulti-level healing means different things to different people and we have a broad range of perspectives allowing this feature topic due attention. As always we cover the mind, body and spirit. The concept and experience of healing is very personal and subjective. Although most people will probably acknowledge that it requires a certain level of readiness for change. Then there may be a falling away, letting go, shift or transformation which can be subtle, dramatic and at other times difficult to even quantify or measure. For quite some time now, we have been moving away from ‘gurudom’ and into self-empowerment. Other people, groups, modalities, products etc can be catalysts for our change and can assist with facilitation and speed up the change process or create more ease. However,



we are moving away from needing to be ‘taught’ or being seen as ‘broken’. Instead of a small percentage of spiritual elite or a handful of wise ones, more people are opening up into more of who they really are as a being and their own knowing and brilliance. What an exciting time to be living! Is it easy? No, not always… although more people are realising their unique gifts and expressing themselves in a multitude of ways. This has ripple effects and the change is moving more into areas where change would not have been possible before. I wonder how this magazine; the people, the information, the combined energy that cannot be defined, can be even more of a vehicle for change… We have a great giveaway this month. y journey of restoring health started after experiencing multiple miscarriages. “Your test results are normal. There’s nothing we can do, except prescribe antidepressants. Best of luck,” is what the doctor said after my third miscarriage. Unsure of what lay ahead, I intuitively knew medications weren’t the answer, and threw the script in the bin. I began paying more attention to my body and the messages it had been sending for over 10 years. f there’s one thing I’ve learnt after performing over 6000 colonics, it’s that nearly everybody thinks they are ‘regular’; no matter how frequently – or infrequently – they poop. Here I’ll examine different frequencies of movements and the significant health effects regularity has on your body. MOST COMMON, BUT… Believe it or not, if you’re only having one toilet trip per day, your body probably isn’t working as well as it could be. Although one bowel movement per day is common to most of the population, it isn’t actually the optimal frequency. You can go to the toilet once per day yet still be constipated, because rather than your colon muscles using peristaltic action to move your waste along, you’re relying on your next meal to push waste through your colon. Some tips to improve your frequency include ramping up your water intake, taking a good probiotic, incorporating some fermented foods daily, and ensuring you get a minimum of five

serves of veggies and two serves of fruit each day. WHAT’S IDEAL? Did you know we’re actually designed to have a satisfying and wellformed bowel movement 2-3 times per day? If your digestive system is working properly, you’ll tend to head to the toilet approximately 30-60 minutes after each meal. Easy Slow Cooker Dahl RECIPE KALI GRAY, My Food Culture


ooking for a nourishing, easy and economic way to feed the family? This dahl recipe makes a delicious feast to feed six hungry souls! If you have trouble digesting lentils, try following these instructions for soaking and adding asafoetida (also known as ‘hing’), which greatly improves the digestibility of legumes. VEGETARIAN | VEGAN DAIRY FREE | GLUTEN FREE Ingredients: 375g dried red lentils 2 onions, diced 3 cloves of garlic, crushed 1 tbsp minced or finely grated ginger 1½ tbsp vegetable stock powder 3 tbsp coconut sugar

3 bay leaves 2 tsp curry powder 2 tsp ground turmeric 1 tsp black mustard seeds 2 tsp cumin seeds 1 handful fresh curry leaves 1 red capsicum, diced 2 carrots, diced 2 cans coconut milk 1 large tin (approximately 810g) crushed tomatoes 1kg basmati rice Optional: 1 teaspoon asafoetida for digestive support, plus fresh chilli and coriander to serve Method: Rinse the lentils thoroughly under cold running water, picking out any debris. Transfer lentils to a large bowl and cover with filtered water, leaving a depth of at least 5cm between the lentils and surface of the water. Cover with a cloth and leave to soak, away from direct sunlight, for at least 12 hours. Once soaking time is finished, wash the

lentils until water is running clear. Drain the lentils and transfer into your slow cooker. Bring a frypan to medium heat and add a little cooking oil of your choice. Fry the onions until translucent before adding the garlic, ginger, stock powder, coconut sugar, bay leaves, curry powder, turmeric, mustard seeds, cumin, curry leaves and (optional) asafoetida. Fry for one minute or until fragrant. Add the capsicum and carrot to the spicy onion mix and cook for a further three minutes or until the vegetables have softened. Add all remaining ingredients (except for the rice and optional garnishes) into your slow cooker and bring to high heat. Pour a little layer of water on top (approximately one cup) to prevent drying then cook for 6 to 8 hours, or until lentils are soft and breaking down. Serve with cooked rice, as well as the coriander and chilli if desired. www.myfoodculture.com

espite having been a medical doctor for 23 years, I still get amused by my patients. Those who have known me for a while, understand the way I practice and I take a multi-level approach which includes the body, mind and spirit. This type of approach is what makes healing possible. We have to look at the type of fuel we use in our bodies. When people get sick, and after trying the magic pill that doesn’t work, they might start making some changes, particularly with their diet. Digging into how the problem started, you find out that most of the time there has been some stressful event in their lives. There is a relationship between emotion and food. Some people find it extremely hard to break certain habits, and expect to get different results with their health despite continuing to do the same thing. That is the definition of insanity.

It’s through a combination of factors that we achieve good health. When we look at the general population, most are following unhealthy habits that are seen as normal. Behaviours such as: working until late, snacking and drinking alcohol before bed, send insulin levels through the roof, which can lead to the step before diabetes. In addition, many people are looking at computer screens, smart phones, TVs too much, decreasing their melatonin levels and then getting a restless night’s sleep, not letting the body do its own repair. When they get up in the morning and start thinking about work, their cortisol levels are high. Then they might have a coffee to provide some energy as their adrenals are fatigued. Next thing might be to eat something sugary, then take a tablet for reflux, cholesterol and blood pressure, and drive to work without doing any physical activity.

What are the

most dangerous forms of EMR in a building?

After a death, an imprint is created and the building being a resonant cavity, will amplify the charge throughout the whole building. A death on the land leaves an initial imprint at the place of death, and a subsequent bioplasmic field that extends to the boundaries of the property. At work, negative psychic impressions created by workers against each other, towards management, or a negative emotional attitude directed to them from competitors is a common problem and, also in the home, where family in-fighting occurred i.e. marriage breakup. You cannot detect this digital TV EMF field with a conventional RF Meter or Gauss Meter. respect for the effect of its motion can create confusion in the mind and separation from innate body intelligence. Body intelligence can also be referred to as the gut brain, or enteric nervous system (ENS) a branch of the autonomic nervous system found throughout the gastro-intestinal tract, basically responsible for regulating visceral motion. It functions independently of the brain and can think, remember and learn on its own accord. It communicates the situation of the body to the central nervous system (CNS) through the vagus nerve and because of this it plays an

important role in regulating behavior. To ask which brain is higher or more important is not the question, rather the statement to be made is; the health and resiliency of an individual is determined by the integrity of coherent communication between the two brains. The ENS sends its messages to the CNS and the CNS always responds appropriately. The clarity of the information is relative to the quality of motion of body parts. Tension in the body restricts motion and the nervous system sensing lack of motion conserves energy by disconnecting neural pathways. An

obvious example is trying to move your toes independently of each other. Wearing inflexible shoes prevents articulation of the 26 bones and 33 joints until they no longer have the energy to move independently. The CNS, no longer getting the full body picture will always respond to the message, but an inappropriate response to what is really needed. The mind becomes confused, the emotions are out of sync with situational scenarios and range of motion becomes more restricted and set. We can change our situation by becoming aware of how our body responds to the functional effects of our concepts, then change the way we move to break the chains of thought that link us to an unsustainable physical situation. TIPS – develop a close relationship with your body intelligence by trusting and responding to your instincts; think for yourself; don’t worry about what the crowd does, concern yourself with what you do and you love and your heart will sing its own true song. hen I was nursing, I would watch how the body communicated much more than the diagnosed disease. I could see what the body needed, and it would always require multi-level healing. This way I could quantify what my Medical Intuition was saying. Sure enough, the person’s physical, chemical, emotional, spiritual and mental aspects were all still showing in this extraordinary multi-level dimension and the body was communicating so loudly what needed to be done in order to have optimal health. I needed one more awareness which I got from doing autopsies – yes I did say autopsies. I wanted that physical ‘proof’ that ‘I saw what I saw’ as well as supporting the patient and their relatives from a nursing perspective. I kept journaling and writing case studies of what I could see, as I knew in my heart that the human body could be 100% healthy if we had variety

and integrated medicine care for the person. My favourite ward was the ENDOCRINE ward, because when I nursed the diabetic patient or the hypertensive patient, there was so much more happening. On that ward we were trained to look only at the endocrine system. The staff did not know to look at the CHAKRA system too. For me it was so clear that the endocrine and chakra system overlapped. There were other body parts linked to these areas as well that were affecting the patient’s health but they would never be looked at, as the medical model is often taught to look at the direct spot, not from an integrated or multi-level perspective. For example when the patient had digestive, pancreatic or metabolic disease, the solar plexus chakra was communicating there is a BIGGER picture. ike many passionate therapists, the decision to open my health and wellness practice was born from my own journey with health concerns. In my early 30s, my ongoing constipation issues led me to the doctor, who advised that this was very common, and to take laxatives. He didn’t ask me about my diet, lifestyle or stress levels, and, as I came from a corporate working background, I didn’t know any different, and took his advice. Fast forward 10 years and of course nothing had changed as far as my toilet habits were concerned because we hadn’t addressed the problem, except that by then I had bad skin, bad breath, was always bloated, tired, and irritable all the time – I WAS SO TOXIC. This was when I found out about colon hydrotherapy and went along for a few sessions, which for me, was life changing. My eyes were opened to how extremely important it is to make sure that we detoxify effectively, and I honestly believe that I would surely

be fighting some sort of auto immune disease now, had I not found that wonderful therapist. I had to make changes to my diet and lifestyle, so I started studying and training, and, after working in various health clinics for a few years, a move to Noosa prompted me to open Foxtail Retreat. I studied colon hydrotherapy and nutrition, along with beauty therapy and aromatherapy – and I wanted to utilise all my skills by offering body treatments that addressed the physical and psychological aspects of detoxing, to help move through the process with ease. I have made the treatment rooms as relaxing and calming as the treatments themselves, and I have a team of therapists who are experts in their own fields, like lymphatic drainage, reflexology, reiki and kinesiology, as well as working with a wonderful naturopath when required. We have local clients and many travel from interstate to come and

experience our cleansing, detox body treatments (Noosa also offers the chance to experience our beautiful beaches, walks and organic food spots). Is your

gut smarter than your brain?

ut decision may seem reckless and impulsive but did you know you have more neurons in your gut than in your brain? The gut-brain connection is the communication between your digestive tract and the central nervous system. This is known as the gut-brain axis which enables your gastrointestinal tract to send and receive signals to and from your brain. The foods we eat and absorb translates to how we feel, think and act. Our digestive system contains a large community of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses and fungi (the gut microbiome). This microbiome is the key mediator between the gut and the brain. These organisms feed on nutrients from foods we consume and produce compounds in the body that can affect the way we feel and function. Neurotransmitters are chemicals and they are made from protein and nutrients we absorb from our diet. If your diet is lacking sufficient protein and nutrient dense foods, you may find yourself feeling more anxious, depressed, tired and unable to sleep

deeply. Approximately 95% of the body’s serotonin is produced by our gut microbiome. So when digestive bacterial balance is disrupted (a condition termed dysbiosis), you may be more prone to conditions associated with imbalanced happy chemicals such as anxiety, low mood, low energy and depression. Another factor that can affect the brain-gut connection is SIBO, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. It is an extremely common digestive imbalance, however, is rarely investigated or diagnosed. The digestive tract contains over one kilogram of microscopic bacteria, usually made up of good bacteria such as lactobacillus and bifidobacteria and other bacteria that don’t provide benefit and/or cause harm, bad bacteria. SIBO occurs when there is an overgrowth of BAD bacteria in the small intestine. This overgrowth means that before the villi can release enzymes to break down food, the bacteria will feed off the food you are consuming and cause it to ferment. Do you have gas

and bloating after meals? Cramping, diarrhoea or constipation? This could be SIBO. SIBO causes the release of gases, such as hydrogen and methane, which cause the IBS like symptoms of SIBO. These gases also cause damage to the fragile villi on the gut lining meaning that nutrient absorption is compromised, which after a period of time, may exacerbate hormonal balance, neurological issues, fatigue and sleep problems. Many cases of IBS are actually cases of SIBO or both, they produce similar symptoms. A breath test is a simple, non-invasive, and extremely accurate test that detects bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine. An imbalance in stress hormones such as cortisol is known to affect gut function and nutrient absorption. Essentially, it’s important to address both the gut and the brain when looking to correct an imbalance of either mental or digestive health, as they both affect each other. www.integratedwellnessclinic.com.au

Reflexology... a step in the right direction for health and wellbeing WORDS LYN SLADE


eflexology is an alternative treatment for a variety of conditions, and has been used for thousands of years. Benefits include stimulation of nerve function, improved circulation, relaxation and elimination of toxins. It involves the reflexologist applying pressure to specific areas in the hands, feet, and ears that affect certain reflex areas of the body. Imagine a connection between zones of your feet and hands that represent areas of the anatomy that can be adjusted or managed. Much of the theory behind reflexology has to do with aligning your qi, but even for those who normally don’t invest much in this discipline of health, there are plenty of scientific studies that have supported the claims of reflexologists. Reflexology techniques include: finger or thumb walking, where the reflexologist walks the finger or thumb over different areas of the feet in a set sequence and massaging and kneading of the foot using the whole hand. The experience is generally firm but gentle,

and should never cause discomfort or pain. Although results vary between individuals, the soothing action of reflexology generally leaves the recipient feeling deeply relaxed and peaceful afterwards. Completing a Diploma of Reflexology plus over 10 years of developing my skills and knowledge has given me the ability to manage a range of health issues. One of the main concerns is stress. Stress is a normal reaction to life’s ups and downs. It is our response to it that needs managing. Chronic stress has been identified as a contributing factor in many diseases of the immune system and is also implicated in the development of depression and other mental health issues. A client may present with the symptoms of exhaustion, irritability, muscle tension, inability to concentrate, headaches, poor digestion and impaired judgement. We start with a general treatment to help the client to relax and to calm

the mind, working on the head, brain, spine, solar plexus, pituitary, thyroid and diaphragm, as it helps the nervous system to relax. Also adrenals for antistress, heart to improve circulation, colon to remove build-up of toxins and kidneys/bladder to ensure good elimination of the toxins. After four sessions of reflexology in a 2-4 week timeframe, we have seen clients experience a marked improvement in their well-being. Reflexology sessions can improve the general physical state of their body, enabling them to handle their stresses, and improve a depressive state. As qualified reflexologists, we also have the ability to know when and how to refer onto other natural health practitioners to support the client’s journey when needed. hat is reality? Who’s in control? Who am I? Who will we be? These are questions which can drive humanity, or destroy the mind. Scientific observations of the human brain have found it is comprised of multiple competing networks, each with its own desires and outcome. ow do you find the passion for life again? I have so many unhappy people reach out to me on my I am a Manifestor Facebook page. Asking how do I find love? How do I get happy? How do I not feel so alone? For starters let’s incorporate spirit into the solution! “Spirit please help me 24/7 find things that make me feel alive, happy and passionate about my life for my highest good!” Next we need to have good selfanalysis skills, start asking yourself questions, are you doing hobbies and things that make your soul sing? Do I take care of myself? Is my life balanced? Am I taking action steps towards the things I love doing? It is your job, to make you happy, no one else’s! This void we feel inside of us is not fixed by external things such as people, money, places or jobs. It is filled by doing things for you holistically; mind, body and soul, not

short term, self-sabotaging, quick fixes and addictions. Spirit wants us to live joyful lives; playing, being curious, and learning new things, being inspired and grateful for who we are and what we do. Now that is out of the way, let’s look at how we find out clues to what makes us feel alive and feel passionate about our lives. Our childhood is a great place to start: how did we play, what things did we love doing, did we play sport or have hobbies? Think back, to the fun times, these are clues towards finding that joy again. I am not saying go out and spend $11,000 on a holiday, it doesn’t need to be that big to slightly change what you attract, the Universe will mirror you, especially your feelings. So find different things you enjoy doing, lay out on the grass and watch the clouds change into things, get a colouring-in book, just stay in the present moment and enjoy what you are doing.

Did you like sport when you were younger, then go and volunteer! Giving is so very rewarding, but remember to balance the giving and receiving. Laughing, gratitude and everything that comes with those emotions, bring more of that to you so the passion for life does return, the contentment fills the void inside. New situations and people pop up, as the old disintegrates, it makes way for the new that is flowing towards you, it mirrors how you feel! Again this is how you start to attract the right people to you; you have already altered how you vibrate, like bees to honey, the people that vibrate at the energy level of you, now simply just start showing up. here are many ideas about what healing is and the experience is very individual, often involving a readiness for change and letting go. What if healing is a magical co-creation involving the mind, body and spirit? And what if it can include a chosen person/ people, products and experiences? One woman who has dedicated her adult life to the healing world as a naturopath, nutritionist and yoga teacher is Kate Reardon and it’s easy to see why she has been invited into so many people’s healing journeys in Australia, Bali and abroad. Our Skype interview was in the midst of Kate’s European trip with her husband Pat and two beautiful toddlers. She sounded pretty calm and

collected given her busy schedule and family commitments, and so I started by asking her all about natural detox. Kate shared her insights and I sensed she could have spoken for hours about the topic. “It has profoundly changed my life and I am still feeling the effects of the first detox I did 15 years ago. Detox is getting rid of anything in any part of you that is not aligned with your most inner powerful self. That happens on a mental, emotional and physical level and it’s more than just cutting out alcohol, cigarettes and sugar. Detox has the potential to go further, it removes the obstacles on all levels that may be getting in the way of being your full potential,” she said. Kate takes people on a deep and profound inner voyage, rather than offering a hyped-up, quick-fix method.

And with years of working in the field, you can imagine the transformational stories she had to share. Her voice lit up particularly when she mentioned one memorable story… A lady in her mid 60s had experienced chronic bad back pain and she hadn’t been able to walk without a walking stick for 20 years. She couldn’t run after her grandchildren and it impacted her work. So during her first 10-day fast, she had a huge emotional release and by the end of the 10 days, she left her walking stick with Kate and for the first time in 20 years she was able to walk up the stairs to get on a plane.

Bali. Kate shared that it’s a privilege to be part of so many people’s lives. Interestingly, Kate’s own healing journey began when she was 15 after being diagnosed with aggressive glandular fever, Ross River fever and her appendix ruptured as they were taking it out during surgery. Her immune system was completely shattered and she experienced an extreme amount of pain and exhaustion. This was the first time in her life that modern medicine could not help her. Kate’s Mum was desperate to have her healthy again and took her to see a homeopath which was her first experience with alternative and holistic health care. Something deep inside of Kate was awakened and she integrated the advice of this homeopath and connected back into her heart through meditation and inner self-exploration; she discovered something very powerful within herself that would change the course of her life forever. Her physical body recovered quickly and she discovered she had the power to change the state of her mind and body and that her ‘life force’ was a precious presence within her which she began to nourish and nurture. “This seed was planted within me and I knew it was my life’s purpose to help facilitate healing, transformation and change within other people. So with extensive tertiary studies in both complementary and mind body medicine, I set out on a global search to find the most dynamic way of helping people achieve radical healing and transformation.” Kate went on to create a flourishing practice in Australia but started to notice that an hour was just not long enough to spend with someone to bring about lasting change. “I wanted to have those beautiful moments with someone, offer a cup of tea, hold their hand and cry with them and laugh with them and listen to their stories.” That’s what inspired Kate and Pat to move to Bali and create 7-, 10- and 14-day healing retreats. “As a practitioner, retreat time is the ultimate and it’s what I was always wanting to create for people, I just didn’t know how I was going to do that within a traditional healing model.” Kate’s heart-based dedication to the field is obvious and what’s refreshing is her commitment to her own growth and evolution. I asked her about her self-care rituals. She said, “Before having children,

I used to get up every morning and meditate, do yoga and journaling. With two small children, this has changed and now I find 10 minutes a day, no matter where I am, it could be in the shower, or in between clients and I close my eyes and take some breaths, pull all the energy down into my womb (because that’s our power centre as women), and I ask myself ‘how are you going?’ I give myself that space and see how I am and that has brought profound compassion into my life. Mindfulness has become my practice, whether it’s changing nappies or working in my business. Self-care has been a huge focal point for the last five years, before that I was so rubbish at it. A good question I ask is, ‘what would someone who truly loved themselves do?’ And then I go and do that. It might be making a cup of tea or going for a walk.” Kate said she now embodies selfcare (rather than it just being a concept) and this has allowed her to show up more in the way she wants to in the world. Some might say that weaving daily self-care into juggling family and business is an impossible mission. Before having children Kate would hear people say, “you have to choose; either motherhood, or run a successful business” but that never resonated with her. “My business is my baby. It’s not a human but it comes from the same creative energy of my being that birthing my children did. “When I looked for role models who were mothers, leaders in their field and in a conscious, happy relationship, I couldn’t find many mentors, so I had to figure out how to create this for myself. A friend said to me, ‘Kate, you can have it all, you just can’t do it all.’ The Balinese culture has supported this idea with their eastern philosophy, ‘it takes a village to raise a child’.” Kate is inspired by how much the mother is held and nurtured in eastern cultures. So she had to get over the guilt she had around asking for help and the guilt around having times where she was feeling vulnerable. She also created an incredible team of professionals around her and they are taking the business to another level that she wasn’t able to on her own. “I had to dismantle all my beliefs about what a mum should be and also about what a boss should be and I had to let go and do it ‘Kate’s way’. “When you put your most potent self in the right areas, things just blossom, that’s the power we have as women.


So if I am going into meetings and empowering my team and being the best leader I can, then that will come back to me 100%. And if I am putting that energy into my kids and singing to them and caring for them, it’s like tending to your garden. But it has to start with us and that’s the downfall of us as women, we just don’t take good care of ourselves. And I have learnt this again and again. This world would look very different if we were kind to ourselves.” With kindness in mind, Kate plans to spend the next 12 months creating simplicity for herself on a personal level and from a business perspective, The Natural Instinct Healing team will run more overseas retreats and weekend immersions in 2019. I was also thrilled to hear Kate has started to write her second book and says it will be created with the feminine energies and less push energy. “Multi-level healing is acknowledging all that we are as a whole; our mind, body and spirit. I look at the whole person; the diet, lifestyle, body composition, iridology, nail and tongue analysis and in order to truly heal, we have to acknowledge all parts of ourselves. When anyone is going through any pain, trauma or misalignment, they need to be asking, what can I do for my mind, what can I do for my body and my spirit and that brings a depth to the healing journey and it speeds it up. If I just worked with someone solely on their nutrition, of course it would make a difference, but if I look at recommending movement, energetic healing, emotional healing and clear childhood trauma, then they are going to get to where they desire to be much quicker. “When other people can shine and make an impact on the lives of others, that’s what gets me up in the morning.” www.naturalinstincthealing.com Holistic Bliss | OCTOBER 2018 |

ealing is a process whereby one undertakes to make whole, mend or make free from injury or disease. What if this understanding misses the point, or at the very least focuses much too much on the start (unwhole, broken, injured and diseased) and the end state (whole, fixed, uninjured and disease free). You may have noticed by now that a complete picture is rarely, if ever attainable. How could it be when we live in a world we think we half understand, living in a body that you cannot take off and swap with another for a trial? Even something as simple as the ‘truth’ can be broken down into a kaleidoscope of patchy grey. Is your truth the same as your neighbour’s? How would you ever know? WHAT DO I KNOW ABOUT HEALING? As it turns out, I know a lot about healing conceptually. You could say I know significantly more about being the opposite of healed. I have changed,

grown and evolved undoubtedly, but I am not what you would describe as ‘well’. My health wains between poor to average. After a spinal cord injury in 2012, my body is deteriorating. The parts of my body that I don’t (and can’t) use, for lack of a better description, ‘are slowly falling apart’. Oddly I feel in the best position I have ever been mentally. I do have to overcome a period of sadness, fear and even revulsion, depending on the nature of my latest injury, illness or affliction. But I have evolved. I am not my body, although I need it. Holistic healing for addictions


estled in a seaside village two and half hours’ drive south of Bangkok, ‘Oceans Thailand’ is a residential treatment centre with a difference. Seven years in the making, Oceans is a holistic retreat that offers evidence-based solutions to mental health problems and addiction. Clinical Director Justin Lucas explains that difference: “Firstly, we don’t have graduation ceremonies for residents when they transition out of the program,” he says. “Residents instead are urged to see the end of the program as the start of a new life.” While it is important to validate what people accomplish during treatment, it is critical to re-inforce vigilance on an individual’s recovery journey. “Far too many people relapse on day 31 or 61 or 91 – the day after they exit programs,” he says, “often because of a false belief that they have been cured or that the problem of addiction has been somehow ‘fixed’.” Unlike other programs, Lucas continues, which focus post-treatment


plans towards the end of residential treatment, Oceans works with residents to realise and develop strong support networks within their community from the first day of treatment. “We have adopted a new strategy, holistically working with residents in a ‘multiple pathways to recovery’ approach, with integrated treatment models,” he says. While Oceans encourages residents to engage in mutual-support programs, he says, it recognises that providing only a 12-step model in a residential treatment program falls short of current professional standards. “AA or NA are not treatment, not professional. They are peer-support groups that, yes, have a beneficial impact on many people entering recovery,” Lucas says. “But they have their limitations and barriers.” Oceans is ‘client-centred’, he says. Its program is founded on the belief that sustainable recovery has to be organically driven by residents, evoking their innate desire for a better life.

The program does this by focusing on building self-efficacy and using practical tools that residents can draw on for many years to come. This, he says, is carried out with empathy, compassion, and understanding. “We focus less on the chemical or behavioural aspects and more on addressing the underlying vulnerabilities that lead to addiction,” he says. mbarking on a healing journey could be an incredibly deep, transformational adventure into discovering who you really are and what you are made of? So what makes you sick? How can I use the power of my “I” to heal? Until you truly take full responsibility for your health and all the elements which have created your condition and have the willingness to change it, using the power of your “I am”, you will feel like a victim of your illness. Standing in your “I am” requires you to be fully grounded in your body, whilst being connected to your Higher Self. The stronger your “I” becomes, the more objectivity you can hold about

yourself and others and the deeper you can work on all your challenges. The stronger your sense of “I” is, the more intensity you will have to transform your pain, emotions and limiting patterns. How important is it to work with divine source to heal? It’s vital to understand that you are a spiritual being first and many of the conditions you have, come from your unrefined astral/soul body. In order to heal them you need to be connected to a divine source which can regenerate the astral and the etheric bodies, and then transform the physical. What else can create a powerful healing experience? n our September edition, we posed the question, “Would you like to live the life you desire?” and encouraged readers to stop, allow themselves to dream and actually write down their wish list. Sitting just behind the wish list in terms of financial importance is your budget (the dreaded ‘B’ word). Completing a budget is something that most people don’t want to do. This is crunch time, as it is amazing how the dollars just seem to disappear from payday to payday, if you aren’t disciplined. Doing a budget helps to identify and clarify if you are living above your means or if you should have surplus cash in your bank account. This is reality time – please be honest with yourself – as this is YOUR life, remember? When I see clients face to face, I write a homework list for them. Depending on how much information they bring to the first meeting, the list varies in length. However, almost 95%

dreaded ‘B’ word can be your ticket to freedom of the time nobody is aware of how much they need to live on each year. It is usually a shock when they tally it up. Some people are too scared to add it up, but this is time to be real. As a financial planner, it is not my role to tell you that you can’t afford Tim Tams (although yummy – they aren’t very healthy for you). However, I encourage my clients to look at areas where they may be able to cut down (yet still enjoy the journey). For example, I met a couple earning very good incomes but it was slipping through their fingers. When they did their budget they realised that they were spending $20 per day each on lunch and take-away coffee. This equates to $200 per week (assuming a 5-day working week). Discounting for 4 weeks’ holiday, they realised they were spending $9600 per annum. They were both heavy smokers as well and were spending over $10,000 per annum in this area. On their wish list they both indicated that they wanted to lose weight, be fit

and healthy. They decided to give up smoking and only buy lunch one day per week as a treat. This gave them ownership of their decisions and helped them make the choice themselves on how to make changes. With almost $20,000 per annum identified just in this area, they became excited. Within just 3 months they proved to me that they were genuine in their desire to change the direction of their life. They had saved a huge amount and were able to cross off some of their shortterm goals. We then identified what was a comfortable surplus to be able to work on their medium to long-term goals (their dream of a trip to South Africa became reality). After six months I had read over 300 faces and knew my craft inside out. As a consequence I found it easy to talk on stage about it, book into festivals, and even scored a radio interview with the ABC. I was known as the Face Reading Expert. to have no more than three products or service offerings. Why? Firstly it means you can hone your skills and become an absolute master at what you do. Secondly, it is crucial to avoid overwhelming your customers with too much choice. I have been known to walk out of a supermarket with no eggs because the 9 shelves of different varieties were way too overwhelming! After having a stressful day my decisionmaking skills were exhausted, and in the end it felt easier to have no eggs for breakfast, than to decide which ones. Creating ritual for grief and loss


laxton visual artist Christine Elcoate has been an active member of the arts community since her arrival on the Coast from Mt Isa 21 years ago. Her life changed significantly when her husband died tragically five years ago and eventually with time, her professional art career took a new fork in the road with new learnings and beginnings by way of the Healing Art Path. Christine has always loved textiles, and has done most types of dyeing, on and off, over her 42 years of making art. It wasn’t long before the ‘Healing Coat’ was born which is an original idea you will not find anywhere else in the world. These unique eco-dyed healing coats, infused with Australian Bush Essences, or aromatherapy oils, became a passion. These wearable art coats dyed with medicinal plants are handmade to be worn to help the wearer cope with life, and balance energies and emotions. Christine’s next step was to make healing wraps for grief, loss and depression. The eco dyes and medicinal plants were used to produce something

that could be wrapped around you to make you feel whole again. The energy and healing vibration of plants and trees have been mind blowing and so powerful. So much so, Christine has studied celestial plant medicine to add more power to the plant essences used. She is now channelling her energy into making death a different journey for people here on the Coast. Previously, Christine travelled as far as Sydney to attend a Death Walking Course with Zenith Virago who has been working and teaching people about the ‘D’ word and all there is to know about the before and after process, taking the mystery and fear from death. Often a ‘death walker’ assists families to respond as well as they can to difficult news, or to the shock of a sudden or challenging loss. It also helps to share legal, practical and emotional information and resources to guide and empower – to know what your options are, to make informed choices and participate fully in each stage of the journey. Working together with others, creating a space for healing, appropriate, real ceremonies and rites of passage,

help move into an easier bereavement. Moving back to a way that includes the funeral process is a big part of honouring those who have died. Christine has also been moved to assist individuals and families move through the grief and loss process after the death of a baby or child with her creative and eco-friendly creations. She approached her weaving friend local artist Judith Wolski, about making an eco artisan pod and Judy was so taken with the idea, she came up with two different prototypes. A ‘B.B. his year has offered a series of events, challenges and alignments, as another deep unfolding of who we are becoming as individuals and collectively is revealed. Stepping into personal power, knowing what we want and going for it, has been like a beacon calling many of us home. Releasing old aspects, expanding into new frontiers of self, we see colleagues and friends shining as they own their power while connecting more to their soul essence or purpose. Sometimes people find the shift towards personal power confronting, there can be a resistance. Somewhere in their belief systems lies a darkness and confusion around power or being empowered and it may be associated with corruption and destruction. This may not be an everyday knowing, but it can reside underneath layers of other patterns and conditionings. Whether it is past life or early childhood, the resistance to taking responsibility, and the result of owning

personal power can be too challenging for some people. Some of these people who may have been bullied through life, see power that has been corrupted, they have learnt standing up for themselves doesn’t end well, their belief in self is destroyed. The behaviour reaction is to shy away, play small, perhaps hide while being on alert all the time to not offend, not speak out, not put themselves in the firing line. Asking someone to work on personal power, who has a belief that power corrupts, or destroys will NOT work. The amount of energy that is required to work on personal power is beyond comprehension. I have found that bringing the awareness of ‘courage’ to someone in those circumstances has amazing results. There is an immediate acceptance and softening in their internal battle, as their awareness of ‘being it’ not ‘doing it’ wakes up. Courage is an internal state of being, which is developed from taking action, no matter how small. Power,

can feel very external, it can almost be a level of proving self in the world. Courage doesn’t need to prove itself, it exists in each heartbeat, in the quiet space of intuition. If we hesitate from that intuitive knowing, we allow the old beliefs, disempowered thoughts, doubt, perhaps the fear or laziness of inaction to take over. To instil or cultivate courage, we start with baby steps, acting in places where we can, making choices to support ourselves, doing that thing we have always wanted to but felt afraid of, setting a small task each day, just out of the comfort zone and making sure you achieve it, listening to that voice of intuition and taking action. Initially it may be uncomfortable, but with practice, courageous living becomes your empowerment with ease and knowing. Awareness heals...

any of us know this, but are we prepared to live it and live the lives we imagined? With, “living the life we imagine”, I am talking about ‘feeling’ more things, more frequently, in our day-to-day lives. Feelings like joy, wonder, bliss, love, lightness, synchronicity, warmth and ease, for example, are available to us all. Due to choosing very busy lives, many of us are satisfied with a little bit of joy ‘here and there’, or experiencing ease from ‘time to time’. We put up with ‘discomfort’ due to excuses and blame the outside world, rather than tuning in and knowing our energy is blocked due to something happening within. This blocked energy can be shifted with awareness. Awareness will shift all blocks in our energy. ONLY ALWAYS! However, to get results that are undeniable, it is not just any awareness, it’s accurate awareness. Blocks in energy show up in a variety of ways. Relationship stress, money issues, physical problems, chemical imbalances, creative blocks,

lack of natural momentum, chaos in daily life, complaining about the same things repeatedly, and any emotional wobbles. When using awareness to receive the results that will unblock the energy, it is likened to opening a safe with a sixdigit combination. Using five-digits in the right combination will not give you the gold! You must have all six-digits in the exact combination to open the safe. So how do you know you have the necessary awareness to shift the energy? You will at first feel light and appreciative with the awareness, even if it is uncomfortable or non-relatable. Next, your emotions will begin to feel different in the same situation. This next step needs your willingness and acceptance. Your emotions must change in the same situation for the reality to show up differently. Not the other way around. After that, your actions – on a case-by-case situation – will reflect what is needed for your reality to change. You must be in allowance of whatever this may be. You may have

to own something, back yourself with something, talk about something, let go of something, notice something, do nothing about something, address something, create something, stop something etc. Whatever that ‘something’ is, it will be that sixth digit needed to open the safe. I have seen, many times, when reading the energy from bodies and contributing the awareness that comes through, that step one and two most people can receive. It is the last step that is the major wobble for us. The part that requires uncomfortable change. The part that takes us out of our comfort zones. The part that requires vulnerability and courage. One energy tool I recommend using as an affirmation when you have an action that is challenging to follow through with is this – say out loud to your body, “It’s not hard, it’s just new. I have got this!” And you have!

How emotions have a

biological impact on your health



motions can have us jumping for joy, feeling peaceful in meditation and allowing us to make the most out of situations. However, there are times when our emotions can lead us down a dark pathway of destruction, saying things we don’t mean or feeling on edge. You see it’s natural for us to increase our positive emotions such as joy, pride, love and also rare for us to decrease positive emotions i.e. when you find yourself laughing in a serious meeting. Naturally we try to avoid increasing our negative emotions, like anger and fear. So what’s this all got to do with health? Well emotions are the beginning of a physiological reaction. When we feel anger or stress, our amygdala sends a distress signal and the hypothalamus activates the sympathetic nervous system which sends a cascade of signals via adrenaline and cortisol to the heart, gut and muscles. Suddenly the meeting you were late for causes you to feel nauseas, your heart is pounding and you feel tense.

So you can see how negative emotions are a health concern. Nowadays there are techniques we use to evaluate our emotions and their biological effects such as functional MRI of the brain, highlighting affected areas like the amygdala. Research into how we regulate emotions i.e. emotional regulation has allowed us to examine how emotional patterns affect us. So if we suppress negative emotions, we actually have more depression symptoms, worse memory and have less positive relations compared to individuals who do not suppress. In 2014 a study of 729 participants over 12 years, showed that emotional suppression led to earlier death namely through cardiovascular disease and cancer. Mounting evidence shows the link in cardiovascular disease. Over a 100 years ago, the typical heart attack patient was described by a physician as “a keen and ambitious man, the indicator of whose engine is always at ‘full speed ahead’.” After a heart attack, interventions

to reduce heart rates have been shown to work via mindfulness. Secondly the link between digestion and depression is well recognised. ave you ever really taken notice of the seasons? Seasons in your life, the seasons of your mind, of your spirt, of your physical body. As a woman in my 50s, we are often referred to as the ‘invisible people’, but my awareness to the multiple layers to my existence have never been more profound. Yep, Oprah is bloody right. As my days become shorter on this Earth, I have realised what a true gift it is that I have found my calling. Spiritually, I yearn to touch as many beings for good on this planet, nothing brings me greater joy, peace or healing than helping others rise up. Spiritually I have run the gauntlet, I have sat with the Dali Lama in New York, I was a Course in Miracle student, I have played in the occult. I have done it all but now I have

found my truth. For me, as uncool and daggy as this sounds, I know I am a radical non-religious, power-filled born again Christian. Physically – never again will I join a gym or classes that I dread going to, or do another bloody burpee for the rest of my life. As I found what works for me physically also works for me mentally and spiritually – the trick is to be in good physical health. Find what gives you enjoyment. I love running, walking, hiking. I hate yoga, spin class, gym, tennis and golf. Why is this important? It is because it’s black and white. Know what you love and know what you hate! Do what’s good for you through enjoyment and physical activity and your mind and body will heal. Find your community, set yourself goals. I am a person

who likes to achieve – I was 46 and completed a half marathon! Mental health – what I have noticed is if I don’t do any physical exercise I get anxious, irritable and moody. I have to do physical exercise, as this is my meditation. My mental health for me is based around the kindness for myself such as: sleep, comfort, organic food, juicing, the miracle of nature and animals. I listen to music, as it’s soothing for my soul. It’s really the small things that have the biggest impact for me. My favourite thing lately is enjoying having a glass of wine by the creek and watching the sunset. lue light is all around us. It exists naturally in our environment from the sun and, in moderation, can be beneficial to us. Blue light helps to regulate our circadian rhythm, telling our body when it is time to be awake and when it is time to go to sleep. During the day it helps to boost our attention levels, reaction times and our mood. At night, when the blue light from the sun fades away, our body knows it is time to release the hormone melatonin that helps us to fall asleep. However, blue light also exists in an artificial form in the digital screens of our smartphones, tablets, computers and televisions. The addictive nature of this type of blue light means we are increasingly spending more and more time staring at a screen and recent studies have shown that over-exposure to this form of blue light may have detrimental effects on our health, such as digital eye-strain, sleep disorders and an increased risk of macular degeneration.


The symptoms of digital eyestrain, also known as Computer Vision Syndrome, include sore, dry or itchy eyes; loss of focus, blurry vision or fatigue; headaches or neck pain and general physical discomfort after spending time in front of a digital screen. Blue light from screens at night disrupts the circadian rhythm that causes the natural release of melatonin that helps us sleep. The blue light tricks our brain into believing it is still daytime making it more difficult to fall asleep and to sleep soundly. Poor sleep and circadian disruption have been linked to more serious health problems, including an increase in obesity and depression. The blue light from our screens – also known as high energy visible blue light (HEV) – has a wavelength of between 380nm and 500nm and is one of the shortest, highest energy wavelengths. Research has shown that prolonged exposure to the blue violet light between 400nm and 440nm can contribute to retinal damage and

macular degeneration – the leading cause of blindness in industrial nations. A study out of the University of Toledo recently discovered that prolonged exposure to blue light from digital devices damages vision and speeds up macular degeneration by triggering poisonous molecules to be generated in the eye’s light-sensitive cells. Reducing your exposure to blue light from digital devices is key to protecting your eye health. To help combat digital eye-strain you can follow the 20-2020 rule i.e.: for every 20 minutes of screen time, look at something 20 feet (6 metres) away for 20 seconds to give your eyes a break. To ensure you get a good, restful night’s sleep it is advised to avoid looking at a screen in the dark and switch off your devices at least an hour or more before you go to bed. What is the difference between an




n holistic approach is characterised by an understanding that all parts of something are interconnected. When looking at health and disease, this means taking into account all aspects of health and disease, including mental, emotional, physical, and connecting different organs and systems together, rather than just taking a microscopic view of the disease. And so, at The Natural Vets when we meet a patient for the first time, we spend an hour with them gathering lots of

information – including the past medical history including any noted reactions to drugs or vaccines, current symptoms, any factors that make their symptoms worse or better, current medications and supplements, the mental and emotional state of the animal, its diet and lifestyle, exercise habits, social manners, whether it likes warmth or coolness, its likes and dislikes, and more. While taking the case notes we observe the animal closely, watching how they move around the room, how they interact with us and their family members, whether they are open and friendly, or closed and aloof, or reactive. We then examine the animal in the same way all vets do, checking for things like discharge from the eyes or ears, checking the skin for rashes or hair loss, listening to the breathing and the heart, palpating the abdomen, checking the joints, neck and spine, and the health of the mouth. We also check the quality of the pulse and the colour

of the tongue as this gives us very useful information about any disease dynamics that may be present. We may suggest additional diagnostic tests, including some conventional ones – like blood tests, x-rays, or ultrasonography, and some less so – like hair tissue tests, saliva and hair biofeedback analysis. Practically, this means that when we devise a treatment plan for a pet, we may recommend a number of changes, for example, eliminating dry food, altering exercise type or frequency and the exercise equipment (using a harness on a dog instead of a collar), and we may prescribe all sorts of unusual medicines, like homeopathic remedies, Chinese herbal powders, Western herbal tinctures, essential oil blends, and nutritional supplements. We may also suggest supportive treatments, such as hands-on bodywork sessions, massage, acupuncture, physiotherapy or hydrotherapy. We will recommend a safe, minimal vaccination protocol for your pet to avoid excessive and potentially damaging vaccines throughout their life, and discuss
