t seems many scientific findings are revealing what the ancient sages, shamans and healers knew long ago… I am thrilled to bring you our ‘Science and Spirit’ feature and it’s full of information from talented people from a variety of backgrounds sharing their bliss. And what an honour to interview international speaker and bestselling author Dr Bruce Lipton who has contributed so much to creating more harmony between the world of science and the world of healing and spirit. I have seen the gift of science and spirit in many aspects of my life. When I previously worked as a psychologist, we were trained to be ‘scientist-practitioners’ and during this time I saw how the profile of the profession and its effectiveness were brought more into the public’s awareness. It also led to psychological sessions being

included in the Medicare partial rebate system in Australia which meant a wider group of people had access to services. At the same time, I hope we haven’t lost the original meaning and focus of psychology, which was study of self and connection with soul. The terms soul, spirit and infinite being can be used interchangeably but as you know there are many different understandings. Some people see through the eyes of new age, esoteric, or religious understandings and others see it more in terms of pragmatic energy fields. lending spices is a fun art with a bit of science to it as well. And it doesn’t have to be complicated! The most important thing in blending is working out which groups your spices fall into. Once you have established that, it’s really all about experimenting and getting the balances right. Your tastebuds will become more tuned to the flavours of the spices the more you use them. There are six basic culinary herb and spice groups: Amalgamating: Mild tasting spices that bring out the flavour of other spices when combined. These are base spices for any blend – coriander seed, fennel seed, paprika, turmeric. Hot: The ‘spicy’ component of a blend. Only a little is needed – chilli, horseradish, mustard, pepper, wasabi. Pungent: Spices that have a very strong aroma – cardamom, cloves, cumin, fenugreek, star anise. Sweet: Sweet smelling, usually used with desserts and cakes – allspice, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla. Tangy: A distinct acidic taste that helps produce exotic flavours, e.g. Thai – sumac, tamarind, ginger, galangal.

Just remember that spice is the cheapest ingredient in any meal and it has the biggest impact on the flavour of the dish.


Basic Sri Lankan Curry Spice Blend (will suit beef, lamb, chicken, fish or vegetable) Ingredients: 2 tsp coriander seeds 1 tbsp cumin seeds 1 tbsp fennel seeds 1 tsp fenugreek seeds 1 small cinnamon stick, broken into small pieces 6 cardamom pods 6 cloves 6 dried curry leaves 1 tsp cayenne pepper Method: Dry roast the spices in a pre-heated pan for a few minutes until they become aromatic (careful not to burn!) and then grind in a mortar and pestle or a spice grinder. Keep in a glass jar for up to two weeks.

efore the festive season is here, I’m sure many of us have intentions of reorganising and decluttering our life but it’s not just the materialistic things that need addressing, we have to remember to clean out and refresh our physical self too! One of the easiest ways to achieve this is through a healthy digestive system. Our gastrointestinal tract (GI tract) is where our food is broken down further and nutrients are absorbed. Our GI tract is largely influenced by our diet. For instance, over consumption of processed foods and insufficient intake of fruits and vegetables can cause a build-up of toxic chemicals and waste products in the body, leading to poor digestion, bloating and many more gastrointestinal complaints. This toxic environment often creates malabsorption of nutrients, causing a whole host of nutrient deficiencies. One of the most simple, yet effective ways to de-clog our digestive system is through a high fibre diet. Fibre can be

categorised into soluble and insoluble compounds, both of which are essential in ensuring healthy bowels. Soluble fibre swells up upon addition of water, which is how it encourages peristalsis, so that byproducts can move through the intestines towards the colon and be eliminated from the body. Soluble fibres provide additional benefits such as reducing blood sugar levels and lowering cholesterol. Insoluble fibre is equally important in promoting healthy digestion. It does not break down or get absorbed into the body, instead adding bulk to faeces and ensuring bowel regularity. Herbal remedies can also provide effective support for a healthy digestive system. THIS IS A QUICK AND EASY MEAL IN WHICH YOU CAN USE A SPIRALISER TO CREATE FETTUCCINE-LIKE ZUCCHINI PASTA. IT TASTES SWEET AND JUICY. Serves 2 Ingredients: 1 large firm zucchini (courgette) 3-4 asparagus spears 1 garlic clove, crushed 2 tsp macadamia or olive oil 6 fresh olives (stuffed or pitted) Juice of 1 lime Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste Method: Leaving the skin on, spiralise the zucchini into a large bowl. Slice the asparagus into bitesized pieces and add to the bowl

Ingredients: 2 cups Medjool dates (pitted) 1 cup walnuts Âź cup cacao powder 1 tsp coconut oil (melted) 1 tbsp chia Seeds Method: 1. Put the walnuts, cacao powder and chia seeds into a food processor and pulse until it resembles a fine crumb. 2. While the food processor is running add in the dates one at a time and the coconut oil until the mixture starts to stick together and is nice and sticky. 3. Empty the mixture into a small baking tray lined with non-toxic baking paper. Press the mixture down with your fingers until it is nice and even. 4. Pop it in the freezer for an hour to set. 5. Remove it from the baking tray, slice it up and store it in the fridge.

Why is

Autoimmune Disease on the rise?



he purpose of your immune system is to defend your body but for many this system can work against you. Autoimmune disease is when our immune system goes into “auto pilot” and mistakenly starts attacking our own tissues. Some examples of autoimmune disease include celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease and type 1 diabetes. So why are these diseases dramatically increasing? Too often people are “diagnosed” and not given a reason why they have the disease that they have. To turn down an inflammatory response we need to find out why you have become inflamed in the first place. Is your gut leaking? There is much published research demonstrating that there is indeed a connection with increased intestinal permeability (also known as leaky gut) and autoimmune disease. Leaky gut can lead to antigens crossing from the gut lumen into the blood stream; this

further weakens the intestinal barrier and creates a stronger immune and inflammatory response. Although this response is in the gut, the effects can be linked to many conditions outside of the digestive system. So how do you fix the gut? Firstly, identifying any possible food reactants through pathology testing is paramount. Secondly, addressing any gut bacteria imbalance and thirdly you would use nutritional medicine to repair the damage. Nutrients such as glutamine, zinc, vitamin D, quercetin as well as herbs such as aloe vera, licorice and slippery elm can all assist in repair. Is infection the cause? Some research has pointed towards different viruses as being a potential trigger. Molecular mimicry could be a cause. This can happen when a virus infects the body and your immune system recognises a protein fragment of the virus. These fragments can be similar to that of your own cells in the body and with time the body may start to attack itself thinking it is attacking the virus. In many people they can almost

pinpoint when their disease started and this could potentially be a key factor. Could it be genetic? Yes, some autoimmune conditions can be, many of us are predisposed to genetic disease BUT it may not manifest because of your environment. Meaning, is your lifestyle, diet and physical health working in favour of good gene health or working against you? Keeping your diet as naturally colourful and chemical free as possible is so important. Lifestyle changes such as reducing stress and the associated stress hormones that promote inflammation is critical. Therefore, getting outside, gardening, having fun, moving and getting back to basics are all important to keeping those genes healthy! Clinically I have seen big changes in those with autoimmune disease through addressing the above and integrating those areas with lifestyle changes. Always treat the cause and not the just the symptoms.

rom stem cell biologist to internationally-acclaimed consciousness crusader, Dr Bruce Lipton has made astounding discoveries over many decades to help bridge the gap between science and spirit. He’s not just one of the world’s most brilliant minds; he’s a compassionate man on a mission and what a blessing to have spent time with him via Skype last month from his home town in the United States. 14

His kindness, wisdom and immense joy for life were palpable. So how does a man who was never interested in religion or spirituality become a world leader in consciousness? “I wasn’t spiritual, that’s why I got into science. But later my conversion from being non spiritual to spiritual occurred in one minute,” said Bruce. In 1985 he was researching the cell membrane and discovered that the

environment of the cell controls the gene (that is, our genes can be turned on or off by our belief systems and environment). He noticed our cells have our ‘identity’ contained in them and self receptors are located on the surface of the cells like antennas or receivers picking up the signals that are unique to each person. Bruce elaborated by giving me an analogy, whereby our body is like a television and our spirit

I’m a spiritual identity playing through my body.” He said this also explains why organ donor recipients can often still pick up on the ‘spirit’ of the original organ donor. Bruce then posed the question, so why have a spirit and a body? He said that many years ago the answer ‘came from his cells’. “If you are just a spirit… what does chocolate taste like, what does love feel like? The human body picks up information from the environment.” It’s a vibration of chocolate and a vibration of love that we are receiving and experiencing through our body. “We came here to create and have experiences. We have to have a body to have these creations and we came here to have a vision and see the beauty of this planet and our lives. That’s the gift of a body connected with a spirit.”

When Bruce had these revelations years ago, the direction of his career changed and he acknowledged the potential we have to heal our lives. Consciousness is an invisible energy that is controlling our biology – it’s not our genes controlling our biology. So what prevents us from receiving the full gift of who we truly are? After much research, Bruce realised how powerful our subconscious programs are in shaping our bodies and lives. Our conscious mind is based on our wishes and desires, and operates around 5% of the time. Our subconscious mind, on the other hand, can be operating 95% of the time and was programmed during the first seven years of our life. Bruce believes the biggest issue in the world today is that we think we are operating from our conscious mind and then get disillusioned when our desires don’t eventuate. We try to lose weight or try to change our money situation with superficial methods. Then when it doesn’t work, we think the universe is unkind and we are victims. However, 95% of our mind is controlled by the programs in the subconscious mind. We didn’t create them, we downloaded them by watching our parents, and by being exposed to the environment we were in during the first seven years of our lives. He explained that every time we have a thought now as an adult, it defaults to the subconscious, and these subconscious programs play out when our conscious mind is not paying attention. Our mind leaves the current moment and we think about the past or future, so our conscious mind is not paying attention to ‘the now’. We don’t always see patterns in ourselves, but others around us may be able to observe ways in which we sabotage our lives. The conscious mind is a creative mind and learns through self help books, videos, lectures etc. Although educating the conscious mind does not change the subconscious mind, the subconscious mind is resistant to change and learns in a different way. Bruce says that during our first seven years, our brains are in a theta brain wave state – which is akin to brain waves during hypnosis – so as children we download from our environment in this highly suggestible and open state.

He explained that processes like hypnosis, energy psychology and certain belief modification processes can help to change the subconscious programs so we can create the life we desire. So how do you know the programs in your subconscious mind? Bruce says to just take a look at your life, as your life is a ‘print out’ of your subconscious. Look and see what’s working, and find out where the struggle is as there will be subconscious programs supporting that. This gives you a direction to then rewrite the programs and be more present. Bruce contends that, “Without the knowledge we will be disempowered. We create everything negative and positive. We don’t see what we are doing. We have an opportunity to empower our life and rewrite the self-limiting programs.” He believes it is possible to create the ‘honeymoon effect’ (that experience you have when you fall in love) every day of your life. When people fall in love they don’t default to the subconscious. People in love are mindful and keep their conscious mind in front, and so they don’t default to the subconscious and they create from the conscious mind. Bruce is living proof of this occurring in everyday life; he is creating change on the planet, and tours the world with his amazing wife Margaret. “My life is beautiful, for the first fifty years this was not the case but it has been for the last twenty years. I spent time rewriting my programs. By adjusting your consciousness you clean up the picture and create heaven on earth. I wake up every day, I have a great life and great relationships and the people I meet are wonderful,” he said. It was such an honour to speak with Bruce and I will always remember his inspiring words and the encouragement he gave me to continue to create Holistic Bliss as a way of sharing these messages and being part of change on the planet. ho would have thought today’s science would have backed many people’s intuitive spiritual gifts (including mine which is the gift of Medical Intuition) and given us ‘proof’ and understanding of what is occurring. What a delicious and integrated world we live in! Let’s explore this further.

of ‘thoughts become things’, ‘that you only have to think and it is manifested’, ‘the law of attraction’ and the ‘placebo effect’. This has been spoken and taught for millions of years by people called Shamans, Healers, High Priestesses and Witches/Warlocks.

Modern science is catching up with ancient spirituality and healing techniques and how fabulous that it is now integrating ancient wisdom, spirituality, quantum physics and all things metaphysical. It is important to understand what science means and it is the first thing I teach in my Medical Intuitive courses. It is a discipline, knowledge, skill and art of a particular subject. Medicine is the art of healing to make whole and complete. Put these together and you have spirit and science combined as one.

The difference now is that we have ‘proof’ and ways of measuring this phenomenon. In history, believing or having faith was a fact. It was called ‘faith healing’ and it included working with the elements, stars, universe, plants, animals and all of creation. People had an internal knowing and awareness that could not be explained logically. This wisdom was expressed in many lifetimes including Atlantis, Lemuria, ancient Egypt and Mayans. Today it is called many things but it really does not matter, as the exciting part is that we are working together as one and it is about empowering the person as a whole.

what I knew and it was not until my Mum died on Christmas day when I was 16 years old I knew I had to enter the medical field to integrate both worlds especially linked to emotions. I did nursing, pathology and autopsies to understand what I could see, hear and know when I looked inside a person’s body. Since then, I have been referred to as the ‘walking, talking MRI’ as I can see the anatomy and physiology within a person to see where they limit themselves and how their body wants to heal. This is coined ‘Medical Intuition’. It is such a powerful time on earth with the integration of science and spirit. y intent is not to shock my readers, but I probably will. I believe that we are all Everyday Lightworkers. Yes, that’s right, all of us. That may be a hard thing to fathom. How can rapists, murderers, paedophiles and the ‘dark side’ be Lightworkers? My belief is that everyone serves a purpose in the process of our enlightenment. When we have learnt what we need to learn about our own darkness and light, our society and ourselves will no longer have a need to have that level of darkness around us. The rejection of the concept that we are all Lightworkers may be the main thing that prevents us from transforming our society. Believe me, I have received a bit of criticism on this issue. However, let’s get back to the truth. It is even proven in science today that there is no difference in the atoms from one object to the next. At the nuts and bolts of it, we really are all the same.

We’ve all heard the phrase “same, same but different”. If we remove the veil of separation covering our eyes, we can come back to the reality of our oneness with each other. I’m proposing that we may all appear different, but at our spiritual essence and core, we are the same. Yes, “different, different but same.” I am here to advocate for this radical concept that we are all Everyday Lightworkers. I believe that we all have a connection to a Higher Source and this source lives within and interweaves throughout us all the time. We are never separate from the source. Therefore we are never really separate from each other. So in judging another, we reject a part of ourselves that we have not yet made peace with. When we are not conscious or at peace with our unity, we focus on our differences and perceived separation. So how do we apply this concept in our everyday lives when we have

darkness around us? When we are being attacked? When we are at the receiving end of punishment, abuse and violence? Find the Lightworker within yourself. Use the experience to strengthen your spiritual self. Use the experience to empower yourself. Thank your abuser for the lesson. Once learnt, it has served its purpose for you. Use it as your teacher. Don’t dwell on the act. Dwell on what you’ve learnt with gratitude in your heart. This will not only strengthen your relationship with your own Higher Power, it lifts your vibration. Your response to the darkness can lift your vibration. Once you’ve judged the darkness as wrong, you’ve chosen to lower your vibration. So, you can choose to see it differently. You have the power to step into the light every second of every day. The power is in the present moment. Seize the moment and feel yourself lift.

Can the

Great Debate



eaders of Holistic Bliss are very keenly aware of the seemingly infinite gulf between “science” and “spirituality”; such a polarity of perceptions and dangerous dichotomy of facts, opinions, thoughts and emotions… guaranteed to add heat and zest at most dinner table conversations! Why, however, should one concept be “right”, and the other “wrong”? What if neither science or spirituality can reveal the absolute path towards “truth”? History reveals a litany of examples where science and spirituality have (continuously) been far from ideal. The Witch Hunts in Salem. Those tragic, cyanide consuming suicide cult members of Jonestown. Global ethnic cleansing and genocide, justified by a thousand or more different “spiritual” viewpoints and arguments. And, here in our own backyard, the ultimate atrocity: The Stolen Generations; deep, dark, lingering wounds, inflicted on an unsuspecting and ancient culture, all in the name, supposedly, of “God’s Will”. The burning of astronomers who once had the courage and integrity to dare to defy the “Earth is the centre of the universe” paradigm. By no means, however, does the mainstream scientific model emerge with an untarnished record. Doctors who not

lead to

that long ago recommended we should be smoking Camel cigarettes! Scientists who assured us Agent Orange caused no harm. Ditto, the morning sickness pill, Thalidomide. Ditto again, for mercury amalgams, artificial sweeteners, and a thousand other chemicalised, synthesised “scientific” assaults on our health and humanity; everything from disastrous prescription drugs to the outright insanity of mass medication via water fluoridation. Why, however, should science and spirituality exist as two separate paradigms at all? Dr Deepak Chopra, in his classic, scientifically acclaimed book, Quantum Healing, showed that our thoughts are, in essence, vibrations of energy, affecting “reality”, and thus what happens to us! This proven truth was of course articulated by Buddha (and many others) thousands of years ago. Of course, confirmed “skeptics and atheists” will debate these points, but Dr Chopra, ever keen to inspire us, has recently posted on You Tube a personal $1 million dollar prize; the purpose of which is: to offer a scientific explanation for the biological basis of thoughts and ideas (You Tube – “Deepak Chopra’s One Million Dollar Challenge to the Skeptics”)! At a conference several decades ago I witnessed Dr Chopra’s close friend


Dr Wayne Dyer postulate a notion that perhaps eloquently goes to the core of the “science vs spirituality” discussion. Dr Dyer explained that the “Universe”, what we regard as all life itself, is literally defined as the “one song” (i.e. The One Verse). If this concept resonates with the reader, then might it not also be that, in essence, real science and spirituality are in fact (or should be seen as) the one, same, and indivisible truth? That any discordance between them is merely an aberration; a sideshow designed just to bamboozle us? Ancient knowledge is not called ancient “wisdom” by accident; it is deemed a “wisdom” for it seeks to lead us closer, deeper, towards “truth”. And what is the truth if it is not timeless and infinite? The eternal “oneness” of all things has been irrefutably proven at a scientific (atomic/molecular) level. The late, great Dr Carl Sagan has detailed how all of us, ultimately, come from “star stuff”; such a romantic, beautiful, yet breathtaking realisation. Now we may see, why some mystics and scientists agree, that in division and polarity lie the seeds of disease and discontent. When judgement, prejudice and fear are gradually cast away, the truth of love and bliss shall always beckon, strong and clear.

hile we are striving towards perceived success and inspiration throughout our lives we need to sieve out the low desires and thoughts that pop up to distract us from the path of success and enlightenment. To succeed at this we must initially have the awareness of what a low thought or desire is. It would depend on where we are at with our spiritual and personal growth as to how we could discriminate and recognise a low thought or desire when it comes into our consciousness. A low desire is anything that blocks our growth. It is something that we may initially feel excited about and want regardless of what anyone else thinks or feels. It seems really important in the here and now but at the end of our lives will not register as important at all. Consider your desires into levels of importance based on this. Once we are aware that this may be

a low desire or thought, we will need patience to discover why it is there. Take time to ponder on what makes you think that way. Is it your upbringing or pressures from society? From where does this thought or desire originate? For example: “I need a new car!� Do you really? Once we are aware we need humility to recognise those deep subconscious thoughts that we have hidden away; not allowed ourselves to think about; ignored; pretended never happened; or just blocked out. Too often we talk ourselves into believing we are right when deep down we know we are wrong. It is time to bring out and discuss, ponder or meditate on them to allow the wisdom of spirit to help us. Often in the face of adversity we forget that the Universe is there to support us. We lose our faith in life. It is in fact during these times that we should reach out for wisdom and enlightenment.

Too often it is easy to get trapped in the cycle of mulling over the negative in our lives. Depression is quite often the inability to climb out of the spiral of negative thinking. One negative thought leads to another. It is only our level of consciousness that can help us stop this downward spiral. Meditation is the key to truly overcome and understand this challenge for anyone on the path to spiritual enlightenment. We are so busy with our lives that we forget that God, Divine Source, the Universe is there to assist us with our challenges. Do we stop and give it a minute to connect and ask for help? Inspiration? The meaning of inspiration: In Spirit. Working with Spirit. No matter what your challenge is at the moment remember to keep your faith! Believe that God will show you the best way to handle the situation or challenge.

he world of spirituality; the world of infinite wisdom residing in each of us, is intelligence calling on us to trust the answers we have been provided with. Science has always been about proving what is already known and tangible. There are some antiquated scientific ideas still being taught in schools and theories of evolution. Alchemy and Astrology existed as entire systems laced with understandings of transformational energy and the pulse of life that we are only now beginning to accept back into our belief structures. As science became more dominant as a way of life, alchemy became chemistry, and astrology became astronomy, due to the essence of the mysterious energetics being removed and their practises outlawed. Waiting underneath the push for scientific proof has always been the connection which has always been around us. The more science has advanced, the greater the technology to now prove that there is indeed something greater that permeates all of life. Not just a series of atoms and molecules or an invisible God that sits above us, but a deep wisdom, an energy that deems us as powerful creators and masters, which has been waiting lovingly and patiently for us to remember. Science has delivered the very things it was trying to disprove hundreds of years ago. Spirituality, the mystery that dances through us, has become a leading

light in many parts of science via quantum physics. We have learned that the power of our thoughts can create miraculous healings via placebo effects that still baffle science. Research has shown how groups of people meditating on a particular feeling or outcome, can indeed change the energy in an area which creates: less violence, less hospital admissions, less accidents and more peace. We know that what we think and feel is creating our future world. It starts you on a life of awareness around changing how you think, and therefore experiencing different outcomes. Streaming Consciousness



iving on the Leading Edge of Creation asks us to be ever present moment to moment. This can be extremely challenging for us humans who are driven by an ego which claims to know and finds surrender extremely challenging. Unfortunately as soon as we say the words ‘I know’ we are blocking ourselves from any possibility of expansion…because we already know. Sound familiar? This Stream of Consciousness is ever in motion and if we can become one with that flow, then an inexhaustible source of energy becomes available and grace is free to flow, unencumbered by fear-based mental chatter and reaction based on past experience. Resistance to Presence creates our world as chaos and suffering…I am sure we have all experienced this when we ignore our intuitive promptings. As I pack my suitcase to travel to seven countries in Europe over the next five weeks facilitating workshops and

heart-based concerts with my beloved partner Terry Oldfield, I am mindful of this truth. We leave at midnight and still have quite a few things to pull together to leave our family and home in harmony. If I remain conscious, finishing this article present with each word as it appears on the screen, fully available to each moment; all will be and is perfect. If not and I slip into some chaos, then that reality will also be perfect as it will encourage me to refine my availability to presence. There is no judgement, simply a desire to raise our calibration towards peace and love. Quantum Physics has shown us that we are always part of this great experiment of life. Life is a pool of possibilities and the moment to moment experience is influenced by our availability to presence. Each member of a family may experience this life stream differently and thus will influence the consciousness of the whole. In the same way members of a community, country and indeed the planet will add to the pool of consciousness which calibrates at a certain level.

Masters tell us that a single person living wholly in the stream of loving conscious presence can have a positive influence on the whole community. History has exemplified powerful leaders who have positively influenced the shifting tides of world consciousness such as: Gandhi, Mandela, Buddha, Swami Yogananda and Jesus Christ. Doctor Emoto with his water experiments showed how thought consciousness influences the crystalline state of water. Due to our bodies being 50-80% water, this fact has powerful implications and places the responsibility for our personal life experience firmly back in our own laps. When we find ourselves in challenging or painful places, can we accept this too without resistance, trusting in the wisdom of the Universe? Surrendering ‘My Will’ to ‘Thy Will’ is an empowered state indeed. We can either attune our vibration to the song of the universe or experience discord creating internal chaos, thus exacerbating our suffering.

wo and a half thousand years ago a wise man said, “We should make food our medicine and medicine our food.” That man is claimed by Western/Mainstream Medicine to be its hero, his name Hippocrates, and yet as a medical doctor I believe, we have strayed far from this suggested pathway. We know that the number of patients who also use natural and complementary medicine and therapies is growing and we as doctors need to embrace this trend rather than fight a losing battle. Our centre intends to set a unique vision for a more evolved healthcare system. This vision is patientcentric, empowered, proactive and participatory. I for one believe in this new paradigm and am excited to be a part of this new holistic integrative medical clinic in Maroochydore, where we will be spending time with our patients, listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic,

Each practitioner will appreciate the skills and expertise of the others in the group and work together. This isn’t a physician-dominated group of people that work under medical doctors. Instead, we really are all working together collaboratively. To me, that’s an optimistic model for the future of medical care. From naturopathy to homeopathy, Bowen therapy to massage, yoga to sound baths, energy medicine, intuitive readings and mainstream medicine, we will be utilising all modalities that help our clients get back into their pathway. This means helping our clients to balance their lives in as many ways as possible from Astrology to Zen and everything in between. We want all of our clients to

maximise their health and wellbeing so that they can realise their full potential during their lifetime. e learn from the new sciences – such as the biology of Bruce Lipton – how powerful our thoughts and feelings are at impacting our body. But do we learn the tools to make the life changes we need? How can we fully harness the power of the mind? And yet, our culture’s dominant paradigm is focussed on the material world. We reduce each part down to separate, isolated components. Governed by Newtonian laws of cause and effect, this paradigm holds that the world certainly is not influenced by our awareness or conscious focus. So how do we bridge the gap? o we have free will or are we controlled by our conditioning, genetics and environment? Quantum Physics has discovered that our universe is a field of all possibilities. Mathematically this is the theory of the universe that makes sense but is it a living reality? If all possibilities exist why do we keep recreating the same lives for ourselves, complete with the same problems, restrictions and frustrations? We are born with constraints and these are reinforced by our family, culture and the environment. We arrive in this life with a particular mind and body complete with tendencies towards certain behaviour, predisposition towards diseases etc. The science of epigenetics has discovered that what we do, in terms of our diet and lifestyle, with what we inherit genetically makes a big difference as to whether a particular tendency or disorder will manifest. This would argue in favour of our free will. However, even the motivation for what we do and how we live our

life can also be found to be influenced by our genes and the environment. We may know that smoking, over-eating and stress are harmful but feel trapped by addiction and circumstance. Evolution takes place from generation to generation. On the whole we are more health conscious, more socially and environmentally aware. However, each generation faces its own challenges; we are facing an epidemic of stress, increasing rates of cancer and rising addictions to being entertained electronically. So how do we escape these constraints to really experience a life of all possibilities? As long as we are not transcending, our range of possibilities will be limited to what we can experience through our senses and our individual mind. Through our thoughts and experiences we lay interneuronal pathways in our brain and we use and reuse these tracts. Transcendental Meditation is a process of going beyond the boundaries of the mind to experience a state

of consciousness that is the same as the Unified Field. In that state of unbounded awareness all possibilities exist, there is not even the sense that “I am in it”, because any experience of ‘I am doing or being anything” is a thought and a boundary. It is only when we come out of this that we have the sense that we have been away from our individual sense of self and our thoughts. When you come out, it is like you have had a short holiday from yourself and just like the feeling you get after having a break; you feel that you can face things afresh while being able to view your life from a different perspective and make the changes that you need. ou are more than the physical body that you occupy. You are a body, mind and spirit. For you to enjoy the best quality of life, the life you deserve, you need all three parts in sync, talking to each other in perfect harmony. This vital role is performed by your nervous system. There are millions of nerve messages travelling at 300km/h up and down the spinal cord every second. This is why it is often referred to as “your information superhighway”. From the sensations of hot and cold, to the beating of your heart, to the balance and coordination of your hormonal system, EVERYTHING is monitored and synchronised through your nerve system. Luckily, most of the messages are happening without you needing to think about it. These subconscious signals help every cell in your body to come together to form this amazing thing we know as your body. Without these signals, there is no life. These electricity messages are life. It brings movement from our thoughts and ideas. Most sickness and disease begins as a functional disturbance in the body, mind or spirit. In chiropractic we refer to this as the “lack of ease” or “dis-ease” for short. If you don’t have inner harmony there is “dis-ease”.

If this persists, it often leads to disease. So the function problem can lead to a physical problem. For example when I was younger I would worry a lot. My Mum would always say, I will give myself an ulcer, and she was right. The stress was causing tension and “dis-ease” in my system and I would often experience heart burn. Initially, if a camera was put in my stomach, no ulcer would be seen. But if I didn’t resolve the “dis-ease” the ulcer would develop. Spinal problem can develop from injuries, accidents, car crashes, poor posture, even stress. This creates tension in your body and the receptors begin to fire out of sync. When there are too many or too few signals we lose our inner harmony and move into a state of “dis-ease”. Chiropractors focus on the spine and nerve system, looking for areas of imbalance, tension and stress. Poor posture, tension, aches and pains, as well as stiffness can all indicate you may benefit from a tune-up. The chiropractic adjustment gives the body a bit of a shock to help the nerve system to reset and return to a harmony. The nerve pathways are stimulated and reactivated. That is why a spinal “tune –up” with your chiropractor can help release stress and tension reducing any “dis-ease” in your body.

n the early 1900s, a female American obstetrician, Alice Bunker Stockholm MD wrote about a caressing style approach of making love that she called ‘Karezza’ (Italian for caress), where ‘the common daily sarcasms of married people are at an end, the unseemly quarrels have no beginnings and the divorce courts are cheated of their records’. By the end of the last century, another woman, Diana Richardson, was pioneering a new style of loving, through her own direct experience, grounded in the ancient philosophy of Tantra, that came to the same conclusion. And now in the 21st Century, science is meeting mystery, with new scientific research confirming the health giving and harmonising effects of a more nurturing style of making love, on the mind, body and spirit. In Karezza the focus is on touching, caressing, and making love while avoiding the usual peak and discharge. Many are horrified at this thought. Isn’t

that the best part? Isn’t that why you have sex anyway?… To get to that point of pleasure, the point of no return? Emotionally, this can be the point of no return. What happens is that with continuous, repetitive high-level excitement with peak and discharge style sex, there is a continual rise and fall of dopamine, the ‘happy’ hormone or reward hormone, which can cause something like a ‘hangover’. It’s the same chemical that goes off in the brain when taking heroin. And the same hormone that shows up in addictions. So the more we have the more we want. And the same goes for the orgasm. There’s nothing wrong with ‘happy’ hormones. It’s just that after repeated peak and discharge style lovemaking, many commonly report a feeling of sadness or separation. It can take hours or a few days. The things that you found attractive in your partner, now become a little bit… well, annoying. You go out and get therapy because you are ‘so emotional’.

Orgasm may still happen but in relaxation rather than in tension, which makes all the difference to your body, your being, your emotions and your love. Turning Judgments Around WORDS ERIN BARRY, Psychologist


f you could observe your thoughts all day, you would notice literally hundreds of judgments arising. We experience them as opinions, criticisms, admirations and ‘should’ thoughts. A huge amount of emotional energy is used on such thoughts, and often it’s a draining experience to pay attention to them, so how can we turn them around and use them to our advantage instead? I like to work with the concept that you see it in others because it’s in you too. Or, to use a simple catchphrase: ‘you spot it, you got it’. This can be a confronting idea especially when you start to think of all your worst judgments of others! It’s known in psychology literature as projection, one of the mind’s defensive strategies. We all do it to some degree, because let’s face it, taking full responsibility for yourself can feel like hard work sometimes, and it’s much easier to project your issues onto others and fault them instead, right? When used a lot however, it can

damage self-esteem and hinder the success of your long-term relationships. So here’s a process that I have found useful for dealing with judgmental thoughts: When I notice myself critical of something/someone, I stop, catch the thought, and try to remember that the situation has something to show me, like a mirror. I start with the question, ‘Where is this in me?’ Often, spontaneous memories or thoughts will arise in response to this question, and it’s sometimes a really uncomfortable experience. It’s generally harder to hold the same heavy feeling of judgment when you are shining the light of awareness upon yourself. As the feeling shifts, it becomes easier to accept this part in yourself and others and amend future actions if need be. In using this process, I trust my judgments to show me where I am to grow, and as a result, my mind and body start to feel lighter. We are the potential for ALL things,

even if we don’t like or prefer some qualities of being human. It can sometimes be fun to explore repressed sides of you, even if only in the mental sense. The mirroring principle also applies when you are judging something in a positive way. You see it in others because it exists in you too! Instead of a jealous reaction, what if instead we choose to believe in the potential for that positive quality within us, and get inspired to manifest it more? What a better experience of life we could create with that kind of thinking. Love all parts of you and you will have so much more love to give to the world. Joy, Ease and Bliss

with your body



ow often in this world of do-dodo, do we mindlessly push ourselves forward and drag our bodies along for the ride? How would a friend respond to this kind of treatment? For many of us, our bodies are our barometers for how much isn’t working in our lives. They clearly tell us about the toll constant stress and “doing” are taking. Our bodies are constantly communicating with us. When we don’t acknowledge and respond to the gentle signals, our bodies’ quiet suggestions will become louder demands that show up in the form of disease, aches, pain, allergies and premature ageing. These symptoms are the body’s way of saying “Enough abuse – be kind to me!”? Have you ever asked your body: • What it desires to eat? • How it would like to move? • How it would like to be touched – and by whom? • How much rest it requires? • What it would like to do to replenish? If you asked these questions, your body might not need to demand your

attention with dis-ease, dis-comfort or any other malady. What if you treated your body like your best friend? Here are 3 simple daily practices to open communication with your body in a way that facilitates joy, ease and body bliss: 1. Start your day by connecting with your body: • Put your hands on your face, take a deep breath, close your eyes. • Feel your face in your hands and your hands touching your face. • Exhale. • Thank your body for being with you and all that it does for you all day long. • Spend a few moments simply being with your body, being aware and appreciating it. 2. When eating, ask your body what it requires – what would change if you asked your body questions like: • Would you like water, food, or something else? • How much would you like?

• Is the hunger even yours or are you aware of other people’s hunger? 3. Do something nurturing or fun for your body one hour a day and one day a week, such as: • Prepare a special bath • Dance to your favorite music • Smile for no reason • Give yourself a foot massage • Take time to connect with nature What would be fun for your body? Ask it! A final thought: Too often we berate the way our bodies look and perform. Does that create more space and possibility in your body and life? Would you be willing to stop judging your body? If you judged your best friend like that, would they still be your best friend? Listen to your body, acknowledge it, care for it and watch how much more ease, joy and body bliss you will have with your newly acknowledged friend.

Q& A Q: Jean, why do grown-ups always want proof of what I see and know? A: When I hear this question from so many children that I work with it brings tears to my eyes. Partially, I can relate to when I was a child and feeling exactly the same but mostly because children have a profound sense of knowing how to integrate science and spirit and they allow it to flow naturally. Children will say how it is; react spontaneously without any need for proof or facts of the spiritual world. It is best to give examples of the Millennium Children™ (names changed for confidentiality): Five-year-old Susan shared about the man outside her window and that he was hungry. Her parents were adamant that she was imagining and took her to a mental health team who diagnosed her with some sort of spectrum disorder. When she came for a consult she explained the ‘man was hungry for

knowledge on earth and wanted to live with her family to learn as he was from the future and was called a grey’. He would share about pyramids and how sound was used for fixing people. Susan would mimic these sounds, called toning, and she would be told to ‘keep quiet’. 22-year-old Leon has chronic anxiety and can not problem-solve for survival life skills. When asked to deal with general life he panics, becomes angry, aggressive and swears. His parents thought he was ‘psychotic’ and wanted him in a psychiatric unit. During a session Leon explained ‘since a small boy I travel in and out of my body. I can not understand this world and I am an alien’. Now this sounds far fetched but it is science and spirit molded as one, as the children are being themselves and trying to express themselves but in the earth world it does not make sense and can be seen as weird and ‘wrong’.

The best way to empower these children is to listen, show them ways to integrate in to this world, and definitely for children like Leon, whom I call a Star child, show them life skills. When you hear them speak you will learn so much as they have wisdom not of this world, maybe even of the past lives. Science for these children is an art form and so is the spiritual world. They are both concerned with alleviating ‘pain’ of some sort and the best way is to have it integrated. The more we accept these children and understand them, the more we have less ‘pain’ in the world. Thank you to all whom I have met and worked with – an absolute honor for me and the world. Infertility is clinically diagnosed after a couple has been unsuccessful in their attempts to conceive after one year of trying to fall pregnant (after regular intercourse, sexual activity during the time of ovulation). regnancy truly is such an amazing time of life, one that we would all wish to go smoothly, filled with love, joy and excitement enjoying every moment of the miracle growing inside and looking forward to a beautiful, healthy baby arriving safely. For many women it isn’t such a smooth journey. In this day and age in countries like Australia we have a number of options for monitoring the baby and expectant mother through pregnancy. Some women choose to go by intuition and connection to child, others choose to have monitoring with blood tests and ultrasounds. There is no right or wrong way. For myself, I always dreamed of having the most natural pregnancy and labour, free from drugs or invasive procedures and to birth my beautiful babies in a loving home environment. But when the time came I intuitively felt that my baby would need healing, so I decided to go with medical

monitoring. I believed with every part of myself that my baby would be healed. Results from CVS showed Mosaicism Trisomy 14. There isn’t a lot known about this “condition” as I found out there are only about 100 cases on record since 1970. Usually the baby will die or in the cases where they have lived they have been severely deformed. It’s important to be in your true power, I advised my GP and Genetic Counsellor that I didn’t want to hear any of their fear-based information – I wanted the facts only on my baby. They respected that and also ensured that others in contact with me did too. I let them know that since this beautiful soul had honoured its father and I in choosing us to be its parents, then I too was honouring the baby. Termination was no option. I manifested my open-minded doctors as well as my appointments after being told they were booked out. Remember you are a co-creator of your

own reality. Don’t just let life happen to you… Healing commenced right away for my baby. Sessions with founder of ThetaHealing® Vianna Stibal continued throughout my pregnancy. I had a follow-up Amniocentesis which showed to be clear so it was assumed by “the medical world” that the extra chromosome must have been isolated to the placenta. After my son was born they tested both him and his placenta. With medical tests being evident – no sign of Trisomy 14 anywhere. Science is now catching up with evidence coming forward more frequently which backs up the healings which many of us frequently witness and experience. Meditation for

Busy People



s we approach the holiday season and begin thinking about new habits we’d like to make part of the new year to come, many of us think about improving our physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. But we are so busy – managing careers, families and personal lives that we barely have a moment alone! How can we find a balance in improving our self-care while not losing a beat taking care of the important elements of our lives? The key for me has been incorporating short bursts (just three minutes!) of meditation three times each day. Why meditation? Meditation improves not just our spiritual selves but impacts our physical and emotional selves as well. In fact, science has shown that even one minute of meditation several times each day can have a powerful impact on our overall health. Meditation works to literally rewire our brains – when we stop a few times each day to breathe deeply, feel our heart beat, or visualise the success or transformation we want to create, we program the neuropathways in our brain to accomplish just that. Bringing ourselves to that calm, centered place within enables us to plant new, positive thoughts in our minds. Everything from weight loss to better relationships to improved finances all starts in our thinking first – and meditation can help us get into the right frame of mind to create the life we want.

A simple meditation practice can be easier than you may think to incorporate. Here are three tips to get you started on a mini-meditation practice:


Set Reminders. Set yourself up for success – add alerts into your calendar or cell phone to remind you to take time to meditate three times each day. The middle of the day meditation is the easiest to skip, but it’s also the most important – that’s when our mind chatter is at its peak and it’s crucial to interrupt that subconscious chatter while it’s at its strongest.


Set a Timer. Equally important is to lose yourself completely in the minutes you set aside to meditate. If you are peeking through closed eyes at the clock, you won’t be as deeply immersed. Focus on your breathing or a positive goal and lose yourself fully.


Take it Seven Days at a Time. I’ve heard that it takes at least 21 days to change a habit, but we need to play full out during those 21 days in order to affect a deeply engrained new way of thinking and being. By taking the meditation focus seven days at a time, you set yourself up with a manageable goal that you can achieve, renew, and achieve again. Start simple and grow from there – your intuition will guide you to the best meditation schedule for you!

o you dream of finding the right person to spend your life with? Are you in a strong relationship already and want to keep it that way? Or perhaps your marriage is a little tarnished and you hope to make it shine again? Relationships are always a mix; they’re woven from golden shining moments and niggling annoyances, big whack-you-over- the-head disasters and then, just when you were about to give up, a deep sense of tenderness, connection and certainty reminds you of why you fell in love in the first place. Learning to navigate your way throughout this adventure, with its delights and debacles, is what provides the depth and authenticity of a longterm relationship. This is what makes it a relationship where, no matter what, your partner has your back and

you would be quite safe doing a trust exercise – like the ones where you close your eyes, fold your arms across your chest and let yourself fall backwards knowing, absolutely, that the one you love will catch you. In order to do so you have searched deep within yourself to find authentic answers and resounding truths. my fears and insecurities piled up in boxes, stuffed into suitcases. In the early years of our relationship I added to the weight and size of them with my anxiety and paranoia. Fortunately I married an exceptional man. He takes responsibility for his emotions and actions and expects me to do the same. It’s constantly challenging, sometimes thrilling and often annoying. It has been excruciating at times. But it has been through learning what is mine and what is not, of finding the courage to let go of the things that no longer serve me and keeping the useful treasures only, that our marriage has become a place of freedom, space and light – and love. Be present – connect with what you are doing right now. What are my thoughts saying? What physical sensations can I identify? How am I feeling? Connect with your values – What is important to me? What would be a choice that would highlight the values I wish to personify? Do I want to bring creativity, integrity, fun or balance to this situation? Observe your thoughts and feelings – be aware of ones that get in the way of making a healthy choice in the moment. Feelings of lethargy (“I’m too tired to go to the gym”) or unhelpful thoughts (“I’ve invested so much in this company/relationship, I’ll stay and hope it gets better”) can keep you stuck in counterproductive patterns of behaviour. Take action – make a decision that fits with your personal values, then bring it to life in your behaviour! If health or self-care is important to you – book that yoga class. If you are creative – dig out the paints that are collecting dust. If becoming more assertive is a priority – schedule a time with a colleague to have that difficult conversation you’ve been avoiding. Embody your values through your everyday choices and behaviour. Remember – no matter which choice you make there is the opportunity in the next moment to make a different one. Above all decide to be kind and compassionate with yourself.








e make thousands of choices every day, rapidly, constantly, unconsciously. We choose what to eat for breakfast, what to wear, how to organise our day, whether to have one glass of wine or many. We are even making choices when it seems that we are not. Every day you don’t quit your job, you choose to stay. Every time you don’t leave your relationship, you choose to be in it. Many of our choices are so habitual we often don’t process them being choices. Recent research has suggested that becoming more mindful (developing the skill of bringing greater awareness to the present moment) can support us to make better and more ethical decisions. A series of studies examined our tendency towards poor decisions such as continued engagement



in behaviours that are unhealthy: we continue to eat food long after we’re full; we stay in toxic relationships etc. This can lead us to waste even more resources when trying to recover our costs. This is frequently described as “throwing good money after bad,” or what researchers call the “sunk-cost bias”. Hafenbrack and his colleagues (2014) found that people who are more mindful of the present moment were less likely to make these poor decisions. Interestingly, previous work by Ruedy and Schweitzer (2010) suggested that people who are more mindful are less likely to cheat and more likely to use ethics to underpin the decisions they make. Bringing greater awareness to our everyday choices can improve the quality of our decisions leading to better health and lifestyle choices.

very now and then I read something that strikes a chord, leaving me pondering over the idea for days and days, or even years and years on end. One such example is the following extract from The Power of Myth by Joseph Campbell. “People say that what we’re seeking is a meaning of life. I don’t think that’s what we’re really seeking. I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances within our own innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive.”
 Rather eloquently said, don’t you think? What is it that inspires and pleasures you, so much so that your enthusiasm for being alive drives you each and every day to build upon that joy? What choices are you making that bring you closer to reaching that state of being?

What contribution are you making to the community and earth to enable it to be a “better” place for future generations to live in? We live in a world of information overload, an abundance of choice and the luxury to be, think and act as we wish. Whilst this is a wonderful freedom that we have created, it also brings with it many distractions that “dumb down” our consciousness and divert our attention from what would truly be nurturing for ourselves, loved ones and the world in which we live. Have you ever thought about what consequence your choices have? Whether we like to believe it or not, there is always choice. It’s very easy to blame something or someone else for our circumstances or lack of, but the truth is we are all responsible for our own choices and can make a different choice whenever we choose. It is not what we do that makes a difference to our lives, it’s the way we do what we do. The intention that we

bring to each and every action. If we can find and place the love in to the little things in life, then we are more likely to find the love in the big things. For example, do you make the bed in the morning with an energy of necessity, or do you put love and intention in to it? Do you prepare meals, or wash the clothes as if it were a chore? Do you jump in and out of the shower and forget to enjoy the moment? Do you rush through your cleansing ritual in the evening, without placing attention and intention on bringing something beautiful to the way in which you touch and nurture your skin? If holistic happiness is something that you would like a little inspiration with, then how about using this next month to become more aware of how you feel, the choices you are making and whether there is any relation between the two. first met Jules O’Neill at an Enlightened Goddesses Business Women’s Luncheon about three years ago. I was captivated. Her every move was effortless and she seemed ‘light’ in her being. he biofilm that forms on the enamel surface of the tooth contains plaque; a glycocalyx of bacteria and a sticky glycoprotein that tenaciously grows upon itself, like a snowball. If this is not mechanically debrided by chewing appropriately textured foods, or by tooth brushing, it becomes mineralised with the magnesium, calcium and phosphate ions present in saliva. This becomes calculus, commonly referred to as tartar. The bacteria and their toxins produce gingivitis, or inflammation of the gums, which is reversible with increased oral hygiene. If left unchecked it develops into periodontitis which is: The single most common affliction of pets greater than 3 years of age. Periodontitis (PD) is the cause of systemic illness – many people think that their pet is “just getting old” when in fact it is suffering chronic ill health. A transient bacteremia occurs when the (PD affected) pet bites or nibbles its fur, chews a bone, picks up a ball, or even swallows water. This will last for approximately 15 minutes and will be acted upon by the RES

(reticuloendothelial system) to clear up the bacteria. Up to 15-20 thousand microbes per ml of blood locally are directly pushed into the bloodstream. This will seed microabscesses in the heart valve, liver, vertebral spine (spondylitis), kidney and other organs. This will also cause a reduction in blood sugar (the bacteria metabolise this) and the animal will feel unwell, feverish intermittently, and lethargic. Progressive – if left unchecked the disease progresses. It is self perpetuating but episodic. The sulcular debris continue to release cytokines, complement is released by inflamed tissue, which attracts the cellular army of lymphocytes and neutrophils to phogocytose the debris and some of the inflamed tissue and the cascade continues to cause an increase in the depth of the periodontal pocket. Oral pain prevents chewing and self cleaning; fractured teeth need repair (endodontics) or removal. Do Bones Provide Enough? Pet carers need to be informed that they cannot rely on bone chewing alone to clean all the surfaces of their pet’s

teeth. The ability of the pet to do this will depend on the anatomy of his/her mouth, the type of bone being offered, and the particular eating methods of the pet. The Beef about Bones: It is interesting to note that there is a large cultural bias regarding the subject of bone chewing for pets. In the United States, a country more litigious than Australia, many veterinarians actively discourage feeding bones. Are bones harmful? Bones have been implicated in causing: Pancreatitis – especially common in overweight animals. The marrow of the bone, and some parts on the outside represent 99% fat. Many dogs have sedentary lifestyles and cannot tolerate this heavy fat intake. It is important to trim off the fat and not feed bones that are sliced open by the butcher to allow access to the marrow. Pancreatitis and liver upsets can occur from overzealous ingestion of the fat. Bones can get wedged in the top of the palate. Bones can break the carnassial (upper premolar 4) of the dog’s top jaw.

Chop bones can get wedged causing pain, periodontitis, and fracture the lower teeth. Bones must NEVER be cooked, as they can lodge in the intestine, stay undigested and cause constipation, perforation, peritonitis and death. The ‘Useful Chew’ FEED BONES THAT HAVE CARTILAGE AND SINEWY MEAT AND SOFT, CANCELLOUS (CHEWY) BONE. Throw the bones away after a

suitable time period – this varies for each individual dog, when the chewing has taken off the meat and cartilage. If your dog doesn’t have appropriate chewing behaviour (eg. some Beagles, Bull terriers and Labradors) you must be extra vigilant. Sometimes this is only five minutes! Avoid food possessive behaviour too – separate dogs in different rooms while bone chewing and also distract them to remove bone by

offering a walk instead. We recommend careful assessment of each individual and each animal for their ability to handle bones. Here are some tips to keep in mind: 1. Do not give cooked bones 2. Cut off fat 3. Supervise bone chewing, removing bone after the ‘useful chew’ stage 4. Choose the appropriate size for the dog/cat 5. Choose bones with cartilage and sinew 6. Do not give chop or split shaft bones 7. Have your vet perform a baseline anterior abdominal palpation and blood test – serum lipase and amylase for suspect pancreatitis patients. Many pets will need a dental checkup annually. Extracting infected teeth can prolong life and remove pain. Tooth brushing is always the gold standard for oral care for EVERYONE. Nutrient absorption and gut function.

Did you know that thyroid disease is becoming increasingly common, particularly in Australia? It could be the result of many factors, such as an overwhelming stress load, chemical overload, increased autoimmune risk, or the depleted nutrient content in the soil our food grows in. Both selenium and iodine are low in many locations of Australian soil, both are important for optimal thyroid function. Both an over and under active thyroid can influence weight, infertility, mood, sleep, libido and menstrual problems. Much of the standard thyroid testing measures TSH, when in fact to truly diagnose a thyroid problem, the tests require more detail. T3 and T4 are the thyroid hormones that your body uses, so it is best to get those checked too.

Your digestive system is like the root system of a tree, when the roots are healthy the tree is healthy. Did you know the digestive system is in fact a nervous system? It is called the Enteric Nervous System. This system has a huge role in the production of your brain’s happy chemicals, not to mention the huge role that it plays in absorbing nutrients for everyday bodily functions. Certain bacterias in the gut have the potential to produce an enzyme called Beta glucuronidase, this enzyme can increase oestrogen re-circulation. This may lead to oestrogen dominance. This imbalance can be linked to painful periods, PCOS, PMS, breast tenderness, irritability, weight gain, depression, skin conditions, fluid retention and lethargy.

Are you sleeping sufficiently? Are you stressed?

Pyroluria is a genetically determined metabolic condition. Those with elevated pyrroles usually have an increased demand for certain nutrients that are essential for neurotransmitter production, such as serotonin and dopamine. These are your happy brain chemicals! Pyrolurics are more likely to suffer with depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, autism, alcoholism, strong fatigue, temper outbursts, IBS, joint pain, memory loss or low stress tolerance. A simple urine test can confirm if you have elevated pyrroles.

If you are having difficulty sleeping it could mean that you have a melatonin-cortisol imbalance. Cortisol is the “fight or flight” response hormone, when it is high, melatonin levels can drop. Melatonin is what helps assist proper sleeping patterns. If you are under a lot of stress, your cortisol levels are likely to be out of balance, this then imbalances melatonin. A cortisol problem can throw many of your happy hormones out of balance.
