follow your bliss! healing crises, oh and the concoctions… every colour of the rainbow in fact and some of them didn’t smell too flash but it was all in the name of being free and living a full life being ‘me’. When I look back, no matter how many raised eyebrows I received from others, I wouldn’t go back and erase any of these experiences as they have all contributed to who I am today. It’s not all about doing the ‘Big,mega, intense stuff ’ sometimes some of the most profound change can come from gentle and subtle processes too. As Dominique Finney (on the cover this month) says a detox can be about just giving up one habit or adding something to your day that helps with breathing in more life and balancing the mind, body and soul. So before the festive season is upon us I thought we’d get cracking on some spring detoxing – cos you know, trying to make lifestyle changes during the festive season is not easy. Upon Rising – 2 glasses of water with freshly squeezed lemon juice
Afternoon tea – 30g raw mixed nuts and herbal tea
Breakfast – Fresh fruit salad with ground linseeds, pepitas, sunf ower seeds, chia seeds and 1 tbsp of organic coconut cream
Dinner – Grilled salmon with stirfried broccoli, cabbage, coriander, garlic and grated ginger (great detoxing vegies) seasoned with wheat free Tamari sauce and sesame seeds
Morning tea – Vegie sticks with fresh avocado dip and lemon grass and ginger herbal tea Lunch – Roast pumpkin and quinoa salad
Supper – 1 piece of fruit Drink 2 litres of water throughout the day.

Italian Salad with Baked Salmon and Prawns Serves 4 Ingredients: 1 lemon 4 Salmon f llets 180g fresh fettuccine (for detox add gluten free substitute) 180g broccolini, stems sliced diagonally, f orets intact 4 asparagus spears, sliced diagonally 2 spring onions (scallions), sliced diagonally 2 roma (plum) tomatoes, chopped 8 semi dried tomatoes (not in oil), chopped 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley 1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil 8 cooked prawns (shrimp), peeled How To: Preheat the oven at 200°C. Cut the lemon in half and juice one-half. Slice the other half. Put the f sh on a paper-lined baking tray and sprinkle with the lemon
juice and a little salt and pepper. Bake for 8 minutes, and then remove from the oven and leave to rest for 2 minutes. Cook the fettuccine in a large pan of boiling water for 7 minutes. Add the brocollini and asparagus and cook for another minute. Drain and set aside. Heat a saucepan and add the spring onions and a little water. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and cook for about 30 seconds, then add the tomatoes and semi-dried tomatoes and cook for a further 2 minutes. Finally add the fresh herbs and toss with the pasta and vegetables. Arrange the fettuccine salad on each serving plate, top with a piece of salmon and garnish with prawns and slices of lemon. Raw Nori Rolls
Add pine nuts and process some more.

FOOD FOR THE SOUL
Ingredients: 2 nori sheets 1 avocado f nely sliced 1 f nely sliced small red onion 1 f nely sliced roma tomato Handful julienne carrots Handful julienne zucchinis 1 piece of ginger f nely grated Heaps of sprouts Parsnip rice – see recipe
To assemble: Place nori sheets shiny side down on a clean cutting board and/or bamboo mat. Spoon a generous rice mixture on the sheets and spread evenly across a third of it, leaving a 1 inch space at the bottom edge. Load up all the remaining vegetable, sprouts onto each sheet and fold from the bottom of the sheet up using the bamboo mat or your f ngers – I personally get a better result using my f ngers.
Parsnip rice: 2 cups peeled and roughly chopped parsnip 1 /8 cup macadamias 3 tbsp pine nuts ½ tbsp olive oil ½ tsp lemon juice ½ tsp Celtic or Himalayan salt 1 tsp white miso
Wet the top of the nori sheet with a little water to seal the roll,and then cut into two.
Method: Place all ingredients except the pine nuts in a food processor and pulse until a rice-like consistency is achieved.

Raw Green Avocado Curried Soup Ingredients: 1 avocado handful of spinach (baby spinach is great for that) pinch of Himalayan salt pinch of coriander seeds pinch of cumin seeds pinch of pepper (preferably raw) water (as much as you like to get a smooth consistency but not too thick) pinch of fresh chilli (optional)
Equipment: blender (food processor will not do the job right) teaspoon, knife, bowl for the soup Method: Blend all ingredients. Garnish with fresh cilantro or alfalfa sprouts and sprinkle with nigella seeds or sesame seeds.

he food we eat is a reflection of the choices we make and how we use style and creativity with food also tells a story about our lives. I focus on simple plating and propping of food to make beautiful photos without resorting to tricks that render the food inedible. I believe in authentic food and am enthusiastic about where food comes from. We live in the real world, and to me that means cooking and preparing real food that is sustainable and accessible to everyone. My food photography follows on from that philosophy, meaning that much of what I prepare, style and shoot, is the type of dish that you can prepare at home. I am passionate about where the food is grown, how it was grown, the food miles involved, the producers and, of course, how it is cooked or prepared. By engaging in the narrative of where our food comes from and how it arrives on our plate, we make ourselves a part of that experience. Having a family that loved coming together for shared meals, I learnt how to cook early in life. After school I
undertook an apprenticeship as a chef. This was the beginning of a lifelong love. After my apprenticeship I worked as a chef while studying photography at university. Becoming a chef allowed me to travel in Australia and around the world, cooking at many restaurants and with many different chefs. I gained experience in a wide variety of cooking styles which ignited my passion for exotic flavours. I think we’re really lucky to have such a broad palette of cuisines in Australia, particularly in the last 20 years as we have come of age and many different cultures have helped shape our taste. My time spent travelling was a revelation. Meeting chefs and farmers in regional and rural areas that were so passionate about their culture and the history of their food. It brought home to me the importance of our food culture in Australia, in regards to both sustainability and nutritional value, and made me think about how I could make a difference. After returning to Australia and living in Brisbane for a time, my partner and I decided we would move somewhere less

hectic, closer to the coast and the source of food production. The Sunshine Coast was where we decided to call home. I made the decision to combine my passion and knowledge of photography and food. My aim when photographing food is to convey the old adage; ‘food for the soul’. Food nourishes us and reminds us of family and time spent together. I love cooking food, talking about food, growing food in my garden and teaching others about the art of food. It is my life vocation. I am really excited to offer food styling and photography workshops on the Sunshine Coast beginning in November. etox – wooooooooooooooooooo do I want to? Do I NOT? – mmmmmmmmmm, uuummmmmmm, Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh to even write about this is taking me to so many different places and there are many ways to detox. But what does it mean to detox? I feel it’s about getting rid of the old and bringing in the new. It’s about releasing ourselves from what has been and becoming ready for the new that is about to come into our lives. On a personal level, I love cold showers (even through winter) and I find these are a perfect way to clear the energy and also to connect to and balance mind, body and soul. I also enjoy reading as a way of detoxing from my surroundings. We have so much available to us on this planet and so much to choose from – there really are many places, foods, medicines, herbs, healers, helpers, books, movies, theories and we also

have our own wisdom! And we live in a time and a place where many of us are able to try many of these – some have costs and some are just free and simple. I have this saying, “easy to go in, a lot harder to come out”. It seems to be that this works for everything – food or the information that is available. The easy way is ‘going in’ and operating without being fully conscious about what we are doing – and ooooooowwwwwwww then what ‘comes out’ at the other end – that seems to be where it catches up with us. Lucky though that I worked out what is true for me many moons ago – I could not even begin to know what or where I would be now if I had not. I always admire people that have set themselves on the path to freedom – to get rid of the non love in their life on all levels – A gift we all should give ourselves and the ultimate detox! hile most young people in the 80s were out partying and ingesting toxins, Dominique Finney (in her late teens) was experimenting with water and juice fasts and having cosmic conversations! Years later, Dominique is an internationally acclaimed author and medical herbalist who has just been voted ‘herbalist of the year’ in Australia by the National Herbalists Association of Australia (NHAA). I recently met up with Dominique in Noosa but to my surprise she did not ask me to poke out my tongue, nor did she look in my eyes with a magnifying glass or hold my pulse, phew! In fact Dominique’s approach is as intuitive as it is scientific!
What is detoxing and what are the benef ts? Dominique says detoxing is very individual and essential! “There is no doubt in my mind that all of us have to balance our environments, our mind, emotions, our physical body and spiritual practices and create that balance. Detoxing to me is about letting go and not being attached to specific parts of yourself. It’s about breaking habits, changing the way you view things or altering a practice – and that’s very personal,” she says. Detox is not just about going on a strict diet. For example a ‘mind detox’ may be learning to keep your mind still, learning to focus and learning the process of completion on tasks. Or you may go from smoking one packet of cigarettes to half a packet. Even 40 days of being grateful is a detox! Dominique recommends taking small steps before getting really strict with your body, “that’s when you start looking at digestive detoxifications and as a naturopath, nutritionist and herbalist I love that side of detoxing,” she says. After years of experience and research Dominique believes: when you don’t have toxic foods in your diet, when you have a sodium/potassium balance in your body that’s perfect on a cellular level, when your acid/alkalinity is sitting nicely in 12

Dom’s Detox Tips Dominique’s written about every possible detox you can physically undertake in her internationally acclaimed book the ‘Wellness Zone’. But water and Vitamin C are Dominique’s top two detox tools – Vit C works on the liver and it’s a super antioxidant and it sweeps toxins faster through your body than anything else. Dominique recommends Vitamin C therapy for a range of ailments. She says interestingly lemons are acidic but it creates alkalinity in the body and she uses lemon and honey for everyone and everything and says it’s very cleansing. Milk thistle is the quintessential detox herb. But Dominique says you don’t necessarily need to take herbal medicine in order to detox, although herbs potentiate the results and protect your body through a detox. She believes people know intrinsically what they need and what’s going to work for them and people are very educated these days and she likes to discuss the research with them. She supports the medical system
with their tools for diagnosis and doesn’t use naturopathic diagnostic tools in her work. Dominique says don’t detox if you are pregnant or if you are taking prescription or illicit drugs (make sure you are supervised if you have chronic or serious health conditions or are wanting to come off or reduce medications). Dominique says you can take time off to detox or do mini weekend detoxing which fits around the working week and you can do it from the comfort of your own home.
What’s important to Dominique? “I eat clean food from local producers, we haven’t had a TV for 10 years, I live in the mountains and we have our own water. I only have one day a week where I’m committed to a set place (at Eumundi Markets where I offer a free clinic and sell herbal medicines that I manufacture), every other day I have a flexible work schedule, I write and I follow my interests. I eat as close to the earth as possible, we operate a certified organic farm, I don’t use anything on my skin other than what I make myself and I buy soaps from people I know locally. I’ve been fanatical at times in my life but these days it’s about the thought process involved. Following the food back to the source is more important and the consciousness involved is what’s important to me. I have almost finished my masters in public health and health promotion and I practice yoga every day and I am studying to be a Kundalini yoga teacher at the first level. I have a stable relationship with my husband and three children after 30 years of being married. I look after myself on all levels.
I run a project in India through our lip balm project, where we support six villages and we are paying for a homeopath, medicines, a mid wife and a nurse to support the six villages just through the sale of our $6 lip balms. “I would love to see everyone work together for the common good. For the alternative ways to blend harmoniously with the orthodox ways. And a professional respect created between the different beliefs, educational, spiritual, physical and emotional status of practitioners, with the governing bodies recognising these differences, allowing medicine and science to grow to its true potential. s we free-fall toward the end of this year, towards Christmas obligations, pressures, the day our planet crosses the Galactic equator, signified by the end of the Mayan calendar, we are being shaken, shuddered and pushed to clear out, detox, purify and lighten up on all and every level of life. Cleaning up our diets, clearing out the places we work and live in, letting go of things that no longer serve us emotionally, mentally choosing positive thoughts to create the world we desire as our surroundings, speaking out against government and corporate decisions that are affecting our planet, is all part of a personal and global detox that is building momentum right now. While sitting on Mt Shasta I was reminded about the absolute importance in these times of holding our own personal vibration, as precious and powerful as it is. When anyone in our life is suffering, in distress, trauma, chaos, many of us
wish to fix, repair, take it on, and do something to help another person we care about. Often when this occurs, we lose part of ourselves to the other person’s energy field. We can easily go down with them, take on the emotions, or their dramas can become part of our life, as we are constantly concerned, thinking about it and conversing about it. This ‘drains the life force’ or personal vibration, leaving us feeling unclear and often ‘toxic’. What if all we had to do (in complete compassion, respect and reverence), was to allow those people to completely own their experience? This in itself allows another to experience the part of their learning, growth, expansion of what they have chosen, not by trying to fix, but simply by holding your personal vibration as it is. The person in the drama of their life is then in a space where they have the opportunity to raise their energy to meet the one that you are holding as pure support.
It isn’t about being cold, unemotional, or aloof, it is however all about honouring the process that another has chosen for themselves as their evolution. How do we do this? You have to KNOW yourself on all levels. The journey of self-knowledge is an organic detox program that we have built into us. The more we look into ourselves, the deeper we investigate our feelings, and the more contemplation we have around our beliefs and patterns of behaviour. he festive season often launches a detox / re-tox cycle, in which we overindulge in various substances such as sugar, processed foods, alcohol, drugs or cigarettes, but then feel grubby and want to detox or cleanse in the new year. This is usually followed by another slow ‘re-tox’ and the process starts again. But this yoyo detox lifestyle is not good for your organs, as going from one extreme to another creates toxic overload. It is not necessary either as we all have a natural 24 hour detox available every day. Make small sustainable lifestyle changes daily instead. For example, every morning between 5am and 7am, the universe and your body are working together to cleanse toxins built-up from substances, stress, overwork, negative emotions, pollution and other things, which make you feel stagnant, bloated, negative, emotionally weak and irritable. So, get up as close to 5 as possible, exercise, do your yoga or tai-
chi and meditate, and actively support the natural detox. You’ll feel the breath of a new start. Between 7am and 9am when your energy is in your stomach, eat a nutritious breakfast. The universal forces are supporting digestion, so take advantage of this and have something wholesome that can be processed into fuel for your day. Then work on less critical tasks and finish at 5pm or by 7pm at the latest. he human body was designed to live far longer than the average lifespan today, enjoying much higher energy levels and a greater degree of wellness than most could even imagine. Centuries of debasing habits, the destruction of natural resources and the wide spread use of chemicals have accelerated genetic decline. Earth is contaminated. Every human is contaminated. Babies are contaminated before birth. Contamination continues throughout life increasing the rate of chronic illness and mortality. Yet, in spite of this shocking situation, our bodies employ an amazing security system to protect us from toxins, and a powerful elimination system to expel them if they breach our defences. Through poor lifestyle habits many fail to support their security system. Elimination systems are often overtaxed, starved of proper nutrition and weakened through lack of exercise and hydration, leaving them clogged and ineffective. For wellness and longevity we need to regularly cleanse out the system, strengthen the security forces and
establish a toxic-minimised environment and lifestyle that will protect the body from further invasion. Toxins create an acid environment and thereby produce a deadly cycle whereby they themselves become more toxic, more reactive and more acidic. This cycle must be dealt with before toxins can be mobilised. The correction of the pH of body fluids is essential. This can be achieved using organic anions such as bicarbonates, citrates, malates and lactates. Lemons, limes or apple cider vinegar will indirectly stimulate the pancreas to produce bicarbonate. Lactates found in sauerkraut or cultured dairy foods will also reduce acidity. Superfoods such as Green Barley, Wheat Grass, Maca and Bee Pollen are all alkaline. With the acid problem corrected, toxins can be mobilised. Fat soluble toxins are generally stored in fatty tissue. The process to eliminate them is achieved by mobilising fat stores in the body. This can be effected by controlled fasting (under the supervision of experienced professionals) and dietary changes. An
increase in protein and a reduction in carbohydrates will cause the body to burn fat. Daily doses of coconut oil will also effectively mobilise fat stores. Once mobilised, these poisons must be broken into smaller particles, converted into water soluble toxins, neutralised and finally eliminated. As they break up they become more toxic. However they can be rendered harmless by attaching themselves to nutrients such as amino acids and antioxidants. The key to effective detoxification is found in the balance between these two processes. The breaking up of toxins needs to be slowed down by reducing the toxic load and by ingesting inhibitors such as turmeric, watercress, echinacea, kava, and garlic. Preparation for elimination can be enhanced by increasing protein (particularly organic eggs), taking antioxidants, zinc and phyto nutrients. Once balance is achieved and toxins neutralised, they can be effectively eliminated by stimulating the bowels, skin, kidneys and lungs. www.lvs.com.au

Our body is a living, conscious machine. cientists from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay have recently established that homeopathy works on the principle of organic nano particles. These particles are naturally occurring and should not be confused with the manufactured nanos that are being used today in food and cosmetics, which are the cause of some public concern. o you feel tired, uncomfortable and just out of sorts? Or perhaps you are unusually bloated, your hair and nails keep breaking and your face is blotchy? Put very simplistically, human beings survive because we put stuff in one end (usually) and we allow stuff to come out the other. or a lot of people discovering their life’s purpose actually becomes a life’s quest and unfortunately for many, the answer they seek never arrives. They spend their entire lives trying to figure out what to do with it. When you have found your life’s purpose your life becomes wonderful! Your health improves, your relationships improve, your finances improve, you have more fun, you see more beauty and you are grateful to be alive in every moment of every day. I know this because I am living in this way. Meditation has provided me with a vehicle to live out this purpose. For almost 30 years I have made my living teaching meditation and working as a holistic counsellor and healer. The practice of meditation has dramatically improved my own quality of life and as a teacher I feel blessed to have the daily focus of peace, healing and growth. However, the one benefit of having taught meditation for the past 30 years that stands out most for me is the indescribable joy of showing the amazing gift of meditation to others and
watching their lives change. Four years ago I opened Inner Voyage Holistic Human Development (Meditation Teachers training college) to provide a pathway for others to live their own life’s purpose as meditation teachers and holistic healers. Since then, literally hundreds of people have passed through our cyber college, studying from their own homes via computer and then setting up their own holistic healing practices, with our support in the their hometowns. So my life’s purpose has grown into training others to live their own life’s purpose as healers through the powerful modality of meditation. Of course training to become a meditation teacher or in any other healing modality is only part of the journey. Getting out and actually doing it is the real joy. So when our students have completed their IICT and IMTA accredited training course, we provide them with ongoing support as practitioners, providing them with all the materials, business mentoring and support they need to build their own holistic healing practices and actually
start living the dream. So how do you know if teaching meditation is your life’s purpose too? There are thousands of jobs you could do to make a living. But how do you know when you come across that one thing that is going to make you want to bounce out of bed every morning & make your heart sing? ing those bells, holy holy! Christmas is around the corner! If you are like us here at Animal Wellness, we can hardly believe that ANOTHER YEAR has nearly passed. That means the festive season is coming with goodies lacing our dining tables, hiding in our cupboard, and in our handbags. Please remember to store your goodies out of harm’s way – to avoid midnight visits to the emergency clinic. Our furry family have fantastic noses and can smell those poisonous chocolate treats from across the hall. Don’t forget that the xylitol chewing gum is also toxic for your pet. People love to see animals eat. It’s an interesting psychological pleasure. It’s important to understand that the temptation to feed our much loved furry friends can be so great that some visitors and family members cannot restrain themselves. Most of these treats are INAPPROPRIATE to feed to your pet, this includes ham, excess fat off the plate,cooked bones, chocolate, and sweets. These can set off
PANCREATITIS which is a painful anterior abdominal inflammation which can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, listlessness, restlessness and unsettled behaviour particularly in the early hours of the morning. Diagnosis is made by blood tests, which show an elevation of lipase and amylase within the blood. As a veterinary dentist the only time I have seen caries (cavities) on molar teeth in dogs has been when they were fed lollies, and surprisingly these have been the green jelly frog lollies! Perhaps the owner thought it was cute to see the dog devour a green frog? In any case sugary sticky sweets will sit on the molar table surface of the tooth and allow bacteria to bury in, acid etching the hard enamel and enabling tooth decay to occur. In TCVM (Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine) terms being a bit pleasingly plump is referred to as having “dampness”. This can obstruct the circulation of Qi in the abdomen and can affect the pancreas, intestines (IBD, Crohn’s disease) and the liver. This causes abdominal pain, a feeling of fullness and heaviness and possibly diarrhoea. Feeding fresh SPECIES APPROPRIATE nutritious food will get your pet in the best shape for the holiday season. Do increase exercise gently too, aerobic sprints and outdoor activities will help get those love handles down. Celebrate your dog with a pupcake! Everyone deserves cake in their life, including our dogs. Now your dog can have its cake and eat it too as Australia’s Pupcake Queen, Tanya Arnold, shares her easy and nutritious pupcake recipe with us. To make 6 cupcake sized pupcakes you’ll need: Base: 400g raw chicken 200g grated carrot 2tbsp hemp seed f our available from health food stores 1 cup extra virgin coconut oil (stored below 23°C) 1 cup coconut f our Carob powder for decoration The Pupcake Process: 1. In a bowl, mix together minced meat, vegetables and hemp seed f our. 2. With a cupcake mold, preferably silicone, mold the mix into the cupcake holders and place in the fridge. 3. To make the icing, mix the coconut oil and coconut f our together. Coconut oil has a melting point of 23°C so you’ll need to work quickly on a hot day.
4. Pull the pupcake bases out of the fridge and remove from moulds. 5. Place the icing in a piping bag and pipe the icing on top of each base. If you want to get a little fancy, add some carob powder to any left over icing; place mini cookie cutters on a plate and f ll. Place in the freezer to set. Push decorations out of cutters and place on top of your pupcakes.

or many the term “detox” is surrounded by hype and causes many pet owners to disregard the concept of toxicity and detoxification in their animals. This is unfortunate because many animals genuinely suffer from toxicity. Toxins are substances the body is unable to process into useful nutrients. These toxins can put stress on the organs and the entire system, potentially leading to disease. Pets predisposed to toxicity are often animals that eat poor diets, and have weak liver function. Toxins can come from many different sources: • Processed foods • Flea, tick, worming products • Medications • Shampoos • Environmental pollutions • New furniture, carpets, paints • Pesticides and chemicals The body produces toxins
through normal day to day processes. A healthy body is able to detoxify naturally. It is when the body is unhealthy and the organs are overworked, or not working well, that toxins become overwhelming. The build up of toxins in the body can cause inflammation and skin problems. The process of removing toxins from the body is called detoxification. Natural therapies can be used to aid detoxification through the improvement and support of the respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary, skin and lymphatic systems. Shedding the Light on Reiki
’m sitting here on the sand with my bare feet soaking in the cool turquoise water of Pumistone passage off Golden Beach. The cool breeze washes over me as I chillax. Watching fluffy white clouds breaking over a crystal blue sky in the speckled shade of the beach front Melaleucas makes me feel a little guilty. Not really guilty because I have finally made it, that’s right, I’ve at last got around to it (after two editions of digression, procrastination and emergency gonzo scoops) , yep I’m finally Reiking the yard, I mean beach, eh! I mean me, that’s it, I’ve been ‘Reikied’ and I’m sitting here in the splendiferous surrounds because Debbie Bingley, my Reiki master told me to, yes she did so! Debbie said that I should go and get into nature and get grounded and here I am and she was right and I feel great. Reiki is a form of hands on healing using energy transference to promote self-healing bringing the body back to equilibrium, homeostasis. It was
developed in 1922 by renowned Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui. Reiki is a Japanese word meaning “mysterious atmosphere” it is a compound of the words rei -spirit, miraculous, divine and ki -vital energy, breath of life, consciousness. Reiki masters place their palms on particular parts of the body, sometimes as prescribed by the western Reiki system, but often the placements are by intuition or feel as with my experience. There are two basic types of Reiki that is taught traditional Reiki and Western Reiki. In Western Reiki, the teachings are that Reiki works in conjunction with the meridian energy lines and chakras through the use of the hand-positions, which normally correspond to the seven major chakras on the body. These handpositions are used both on the front and back of the body, and can include specific areas. The use of the chakras is widespread within Western Reiki. Conversely, Traditional Japanese Reiki, doesn’t rely so much on the use of
chakras as it concentrates more on treating specific areas of the body after using specialist techniques to find areas of disease or discomfort in the auras and physical body. A truly personal even spiritual experience, I felt the energy flow as I became more and more relaxed and afterwards my Reiki master produced some sage and smudged me. How cool, relaxing and healing and I kept all my clothes on, yippy! Detox Your Fears For An Easier Birth!

pring is classically the time to detox your life. I really believe toxins are to the body what fears are to a pregnant mind. You may not be aware of them or their effects but left to breed and run rampant, they can cause problems in the long run. Mental pollution comes in many forms. Hollywood images, media or our collective emergency mindset that has turned a natural miracle into a medical event in our own minds and then makes that come true. Stop feeding the fears. Turn off the box, put away the â€˜bad newsâ€™ and please, I beg you, stop listening to horror stories! Ask politely â€œis it a positive story?â€? Let them know, â€œshhhh baby is listening!â€? Perhaps you can agree to swap notes after the birth so they donâ€™t impact on your experience. You are the protector of your mental space and babyâ€™s home. Nobody has the
right to disturb your peace of mind. This is where motherhood begins. Research shows labour is not just a mechanical process but an intricate interplay between mind and body. A hormonal orchestra that is easily disturbed. By what, you may ask? By your own mind and emotions. This is where other mammals have the advantage. They just rely on instincts and donâ€™t let their heads get in the way. Fortunately, they donâ€™t read newspapers so they donâ€™t know they should be afraid! It turns out being primitive serves us better than being sophisticated. Want a pain-free birth? A fascinating theory I talk about in my new book is Dr Readâ€™s â€˜Fear â€“ Tension â€“ Painâ€™ Syndrome. Dr Read says, â€œpain in an otherwise uncomplicated labour arises from the sympathetic nervous system fuelled by the emotion of fear.â€? By removing fear, tension is reduced and pain eliminated or minimised. Put simply, cure the fear and the pain is taken care of.
Do you hold the belief that contractions represent pain? If so, you will make that a self fulfilling prophecy. Give it a different name. I never used the word contractions, nor pain. All I spoke of were waves and intense pressure and therefore that was all I had during my birthing experiences. Learn the art of total body relaxation. Get yourself to such a state of inner calm that you no longer hold any fears regarding your birth and are only filled with anticipation of meeting your baby and becoming a mother. Why Do I Detox? By Mary-Lou Stephens
Why do I always do this to myself?” I found myself thinking three days into a detox retreat. When other people take time off work, most of them have a holiday. Instead, I spend seven days without food, taking lots of herbs to clean out my entire system, which before it gets clean feels like…well you get the idea. Other so-called holidays I’ve had involved meditating in silence for ten days and only having lemon water for dinner. I seem to think that holidays are meant to fortify the body and soul rather than relax them. Perhaps I feel a certain amount of guilt living in a permanent holiday destination, where driving to work means a beautiful meander along the Maroochy River and I get to go to the beach everyday. Friends and family laughed when I told them I was going on a detox
retreat. “You’re the cleanest living person we know,” they said. “What have you got to detox from?” And that was a very good question, a question I didn’t find the complete answer to until almost the end of the retreat. The answer I found was that I was detoxing from the media, from the news, from the gossip, from the latest round of tragedy and betrayal. I was detoxing from the internet, and boy did I go through withdrawals. Not being able to google myself up an answer or some information at the touch of a keyboard was almost as tough as going without three meals a day plus snacks. I was detoxing from a certain mindset that pushes us all to achieve in the external world, to acquire and grasp and cut ourselves off from each other with our possessions and positions in life.
I was detoxing from fear, from the need to constantly prove myself in the eyes of others. And strangely enough of all, I was detoxing from music. I fill my ears constantly with sounds from all over the world, the latest hit single from the multinational multi-labels to obscure bouzouki playing duos recorded on the last two track reel-toreel in existence. Sometimes your ears need a good cleaning out as well as the rest of your system so that you can appreciate a simple melody or a beautiful lyric. The joy of detoxing is that you get to begin again all squeaky clean and when you do you can really enjoy that brand new song, the latest factoid on the internet and the taste of, well let’s face it, just about anything tastes good after a week of not eating! www.maryloustephens.com.au

n numerology, we run in cycles of 9, so January to September (months 1 to 9) each year are for planting the seeds of your dreams and October through to December are the months where you’ll see your hard work pay off. As the eleventh month of the year, November holds special significance because 11 is a Master Number. If 1 is the number of a leader then 11 is the number of a leader of leaders, so it’s no surprise that many famous people have 11 energy (Obama, Al Gore, Prince Charles, Prince William, Madonna and Jesus, to name a few). The number 11 looks like ‘train tracks connecting heaven and earth’ and it’s all about justice. If you turn 11 on its side, it becomes an equals (=) sign. I take this to mean that life is fair and what you put out you get back 100%. It’s all a cosmic game like the Olympics, so please don’t take shortcuts because you will always be found out.
11 is an intense vibration that brings our shadow self to light. If you have any physical or emotional addictions they may become overwhelming this month as a sign that you need to step back and start pacing yourself. As they say, we often overestimate what we can achieve in one year and underestimate what we can do in 10. With a little planning you can have everything you want in life, just not all at once. Life is like a good dinner – it comes in courses so that you can enjoy the process. If the Universe gave you everything at once, you’d just get indigestion. November is also a month to meet your soul mate or to take up humanitarian work (note the two 1s standing as equals). So if you’re looking for a summer (or a lifetime) fling consider crawling out from that pile of paperwork and joining a cause you’re passionate about. Like attracts like and
that’s never more obvious than in an 11 month. KEY DATES Nov 4: Use your intuition to seek fair solutions to work or health problems. Nov 11: Forgive yourself for past mistakes and detach from drama. Nov 13: Move through self-doubt to take action on your childhood dreams. Nov 22: Join or start projects that have a long-term benefit for humanity.
