hen I reflect on our ‘Get Real’ feature this month, so many ideas spring to mind. I think about our cover girl Kristie Ord and her mega quest for making real food a priority and this requires getting back to basics and putting our health and earth first. The topic also brings out the consciousness crusader in me, as being real for me is about being with whatever shows up in the moment and expressing me as fully as I can, even if that’s a tough gig at times! I also wanted to say that I didn’t start this magazine for something cute to do, I started this magazine because I was fascinated to meet so many different people and discover many modalities all of which have been part of changing my life and other people’s lives and so I wanted to create a forum where all these different perspectives could be shared with more people.

Do you need to adopt every modality into your life? No! Do the different modalities see eye to eye? Not always. Does one modality see themselves as more superior than another or see themselves as the absolute panacea? Sometimes, and this is true in mainstream and alternative fields. I would like to continue to share the benefits of an holistic approach through this magazine. And this means looking at all aspects of a person’s life. What works for one person, may not work for another and it’s a very individual and personal journey. I feel we can do more to work together and share our collective wisdom (honouring our own uniqueness). This also means moving away from competition and finding ways to be with each other, creating a different world together.

A clearer Mindd on health

ristine Matheson – author, keynote speaker and Cancer to Wellness expert, was diagnosed with terminal cancer and given at best 12 months to live. Back to basics WORDS SUZANNAH SMART, Accredited Practising Dietitian and Nutritionist


ooking around any supermarket I’m fairly sure many of the products sold would not be recognised as food a hundred years ago. The majority of packaged foods these days contain at least one number, flavour, thickener, emulsifier, preservative, colour or stabiliser. And don’t make the mistake of thinking that the wide range of ‘health foods’ available are exempt from this. I would argue that many foods that are marketed under this category are just as far from ‘real food’ as the typical junk food offenders. For example, I was chatting with a lady recently who was adamant that her coconut milk far surpassed regular cows milk in terms of health qualities. She was shocked when I pointed out the extensive ingredients list, which showed that this particular brand was only 8% coconut cream. The rest was made up of water, thickeners, artificial flavours and a bunch of numbers. For the very small minority who are intolerant or allergic to cows’ milk, these may be great alternatives. For the rest of us, real milk is fine. What has happened to the simplicity of eating real food? Despite the millions of dollars that Australians spend each year on

products and programs that promise to help us get healthier, 62.8% of Australians are overweight or obese and preventable lifestyle-based diseases are the biggest cause of death (ABS, 2013). This may be partly due to the fact that most Australians aren’t doing something that has been proven to significantly reduce our risk of heart disease, cancer, obesity and diabetes; only 6% of us are eating enough fruit and vegetables (ABS, 2012). How do you measure up? Are you eating at least 5 cups of salad or 2.5 cups of cooked vegetables every day? What about your 2 pieces of fruit? If you are, give yourself a pat on the back. You’re likely to be in the healthiest 6% of Australians. We are so lucky here on the Sunshine Coast to have a plethora of fantastic farmers’ markets where we can source whole foods cheaply and conveniently. If you make time to get down to your local market, your food is more likely to be locally grown, organic and minimally processed. If you can’t get to the markets, all is not lost. The fresh food section in the supermarkets is perfectly fine and there are plenty of packaged foods that are actually okay. Of course many processed foods are nutrient-poor and pumped full of

additives. But there are plenty of better choices that are high in fibre, low in salt and sugar, have minimal processing and are full of nutrients. For example; tinned fish, lentils, chickpeas, frozen vegetables and berries, plain Greek yoghurt, wholegrain bread and brown rice make a regular appearance in my house. These types of foods can be used as convenient, cheap ways to make easy, quick, nutritious meals. It’s also a good idea to look for products that have as few artificial additives and numbers as possible. If you’re someone who is sensitive to food chemicals, there are a few numbers in particular that are most likely to cause a reaction, such as synthetic antioxidants 310-312 and glutamate flavour enhancers 620-625. But mostly I like to bring it back to the basics. My favourite quote by Michael Pollen sums it up perfectly: “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” So make use of the farmers’ markets to get fresh local produce, check the ingredients on products (even if it’s from the ‘health food’ aisle) and choose minimally processed food. Your body will thank you for it.

eet Kristie Ord, whose personal story of regaining her health and her passion to create change in the world of nutrition are inspiring to say the least. From the age of five, Kristie recalls being debilitated by health issues ranging from digestive issues, to chronic bronchitis, to pneumonia. Many of these conditions required hospitalisation where she received treatment for her symptoms, yet very little assistance in addressing the causes of the onslaught of dis-ease in her body. She was on various medications for over ten years and at times felt as though her body might give up. As the

years passed, the episodes of ill health became more frequent and in her late teens and early 20s, like so many young people, Kristie’s party lifestyle added to the strain on her body. Then, one day at the age of 22, after not being able to walk from debilitating digestive issues, a friend made a suggestion to simply try a few new things. So she did, and within 30 days Kristie had changed her entire life as she discovered that it was actually her body’s acidity and inability to absorb nutrients from the foods she was eating that was causing a lot of her health issues. Quite suddenly, she changed the direction of

an underground movement of people and despite more and more people being willing to add green smoothies to their daily routines, Kristie noticed that many people still lacked the fundamental information about nutritional health, real foods and the impact it can have on our bodies, our wellbeing, and our lives. She was constantly looking for new ways to expand people’s knowledge and encourage them to change the relationship they have with food.

Over the next three years, not only did her health issues improve dramatically, she also became an advocate for nutritional health. She studied and became an holistic health practitioner, raw food chef, public speaker and organiser of a stream of events highlighting the importance of nutrition. In November 2013 she opened her own raw food café in Brisbane where she created culinary delights from raw foods. During this time, Kristie soon discovered that there was still a huge gap in the understanding of good nutrition. The raw food way of living had largely been

But life has not been without its challenges. November 2014 saw ‘48 Degrees Raw Food Café’ close its doors as Kristie embarked on the next stage of her journey. Kristie also suffered depression and adrenal fatigue along the way, and only now has the resources, the knowledge and the tools to know what’s required to balance her life and her body. She realised, she was not content to simply educate and serve those who chose to enter her world through the café, or consult with people one on one as an holistic health practitioner, it was time for Kristie to follow her big picture dream – to change attitudes towards food en-masse. So life is busy for this 26-year-old as she travels around the country hosting ‘The Real Food Revolution’, Australia’s premier health and wellness event. The Real Food Revolution is a three-day event that will help you to discover the truths about real food and understand how to be the healthiest, happiest version of you. And it’s shaping up to fulfil her dream of educating large groups of people. In addition to this, Kristie is also working on a myriad of other projects including a Bali Business and Health Retreat and a joint project for a

documentary on alkalinity, due to start filming in Brisbane in October through to November 2015. The documentary will follow four people with high acidity and health issues such as high blood pressure and diabetes on a 30-day alkalising process and will highlight a whole-oflife approach including the benefits of fitness, yoga and meditation. Results will be measured and documented and once filming is completed, the project will be launched in Australia and the United States. Kristie is excited about what will be revealed during this process, and expressed that acidity is a major player in poor health and reversing it is as simple as diet and lifestyle changes. When you speak to Kristie, there is no doubt about it – this woman desires to create change in a big way. Her message is clear, ‘we need to change our psychology around food’. For Kristie it’s all about reversing the socially conditioned attitudes that we have towards food. “We seem to have forgotten the function that food plays. Quite simply, food is required to nourish our bodies in order for our cells to regenerate and for our bodies to function as they were designed to. Somewhere along the way, we’ve forgotten this very basic principle.” When someone asks Kristie for advice on changing their diet she advises, “consider if what you’re about to eat is a healing food. Does it have the properties to nourish your cells and heal your body? If not, then don’t eat it. If you’re not sure, then find out.” In the not too distant future, Kristie would like to see a world where we are one and where whole and organic foods are common place. Plant-based produce would be in abundance and made up the major portion of what we consume. People would be educated and willing to eat real foods, and medication as we know it, would be limited. The world would be free of diseases and illnesses such as diabetes, cancer and depression. It’s a big call for just one young woman and after talking with her, I have little doubt that Kristie Ord will make a very significant difference to the world of nutritional health. hildren will tell you exactly how it is! They are raw, real and honest and that is why I love working with them. Aden and Jason were both told to ‘get real’ and stop this ‘naughty behaviour’ but through expressing themselves they were showing their teachers and parents to GET REAL. They were being themselves and this was so powerful that it frightened the adults. Aden had the ability to tune in to his Year 5 teacher and know how to challenge her beliefs and push her boundaries. He had all the gifts of an AQUA child. Aden was always real and spoke his mind and clearly announced ‘NO’ when he did not want to do anything. If he thought the teacher was an ‘idiot’ he told her. Aden did not like sitting still and would walk around during assembly when he was supposed to sit quietly. His teacher and Principal contacted me as his behaviour and language was rude, not conforming

and disruptive. After a few professional development consults, I explained that he was being REAL. His behaviour and actions were saying it like it was for him. Yes he was required to learn life’s societal rules and yet he wanted to be himself… real. With insights about the AQUA child personality Aden’s school created new systems and strategies for Aden and other ‘real’ children. They admired Aden for being real. Jason on the other hand was REAL with his family. At school he was the perfect student, showing STAR child-like qualities. He was academic, excelled at school and followed all the instructions. At home he was the same except for one thing; his real attitude about life, the universe and consciousness. Having the STAR child qualities, he liked to think deeply and profoundly. He could access consciousness, universal laws and the spiritual side with ease. Jason is now 18 years old but I can recall when his

parents brought him to me and thought that he had imaginary friends and that he was making things up. Jason was being himself by stating what ‘the blue men said’. Jason connected with Pleiades and the wisdom of those times and would say profound wisdom that no five-year-old would know. He knew when there would be an earthquake and the dynamics of mathematical formulas. His wisdom and insight were not of this world. His sharing would scare his parents. Jason talked of aliens and intergalactic wars. He could recall past lives. He did not hide this side of himself. Finding Me




or as long as I can remember, MY LIFE HAS BEEN A STRUGGLE, starting with my traumatic breach birth, with the cord wrapped around my neck and continuing on throughout school and my adult life. I spent my life hiding behind my ordinary self. I became a master at bottling up my feelings and pretending everything was okay. I lacked confidence and felt empty inside, which all led to withdrawing and missing out on opportunities. I became an expert at self-sabotage as I didn’t feel worthy. About five years ago, I was living life in survival mode, entrenched in a dysfunctional relationship, being bullied at work and continuing my pattern of suppression. My Mac track was slipping on a chocolate milkshake. My emotional pain turned into a crippling physical pain. I had surgery several times, endured painful injections and took way too many painkillers.


I lost my independence, as Chronic Pain Syndrome engulfed my body, depression filled every thought, and I completely disconnected from my family, my friends and myself. In these moments of despair, my authentic journey began… This is when Kinesiology showed up in my life. I was scared, completely alone and oh so disconnected but I was ready to admit it and take control of, and responsibility for, my life. I made a choice to commit to the process of transformation. I surrendered to the pain of my shattered heart and forgotten dreams. I let go of the fear, got out of my head and opened up my heart. Yes it was challenging, yes there were uncomfortable and painful moments, and yes there were tears. But I said yes to getting REAL with myself and this meant taking off my mask, getting vulnerable, and feeling deeply.

I was rewarded with potent ‘Ah ha’ moments, inner clarity, and a new sense of direction. I walked in one person and out another – it was like a miracle. I learned to embrace and accept the deepest darkest parts of myself, listen to my intuition and reconnect to my purpose. Kinesiology has helped me to stand in my power, transform my vulnerabilities into my strengths, open my heart and express my unique essence out into this world. I am grateful now for all these life experiences which I know have prepared me for this extraordinary life I now lead. My days are filled sharing my soul purpose in my Coolum Beach Clinic overlooking the ocean. My passion is holding a safe space for others to journey within to let go, reconnect to their authentic self and walk the path of their own hearts.

Holistic Bliss: What are the biggest health concerns in your opinion? Dr Sanchez: Sugars and carbohydrates. Unfortunately they are in every food. You should try to stick to real foods, nothing processed, have a very small pantry at home, and do your food shopping every other day with fresh food, that way you know exactly what you are eating. Holistic Bliss: What can we do about it? Dr Sanchez: Try to educate people, excessive carbohydrate intake, even if they are natural like fruit, can have detrimental effects on your health, and put you at risk of diabetes, as unfortunately we are seeing in the average of the population. Increasing the amount of healthy fats to satisfy your appetite can dramatically help with the “carb addiction”. Holistic Bliss: What health changes have you seen with the people you work with?

The list is endless here and if you are reading this, chances are you already know the answer – life becomes a continual romance and adventure! What are the signs we are not ‘being real’? There are signs when we are not ‘being real’. They are easy to see and together with love and compassion we can help each other break through them and stop them getting in the way of our dreams. 1. Lying or exaggerating 2. Being defensive 3. Judging others or ourselves 4. Blaming others or situations 5. Some negative behaviour or emotion Whenever we see these in ourselves – STOP! They are not us, they are not who we are and underneath all of them is a soul asking for help. When we see them in others and ourselves, simply recognise that we are stuck in a negative

‘Being Real’? pattern or program and are not ‘being real’. What can we do to ‘be real’ when we see a sign we are not ‘being real’? 1. OWN IT! What you own you can change! If you catch yourself lying or over exaggerating, look at it. Stop in the moment, smile, be brave and bold, and say something like; “I have no idea why I am saying or said what I just said. It’s not true�. 2. There is nothing to defend! Remember that only one opinion matters – that all opinions are valid! Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion whatever it is. Trust what your opinion is and let others have their own. 3. Stop expecting anything! From yourself and from others! This in itself will eliminate judgments. We all have amazing inner guidance systems guiding us into the perfect experiences for us to realise more of who we are. 4. You create your reality and EVERYTHING outside of you is a

vividly remember the day when I first read the quote from the Dalai Lama that said “Kindness is my religion”. This radical idea went straight to my heart. Could kindness be what life is all about? Back in 2009, I began an experiment to start a ‘kindness revolution’ in Australia. I left my job, designed some ‘Kindness Cards’ and offered to send them out at no cost. The Kindness Cards are an easy and playful way to create a ripple of goodness throughout the community. After six years, we’ve posted out more than 250,000 free Kindness Cards. Thousands of lives have been touched and we constantly receive beautiful stories from both the kindness card users and the recipients of anonymous kind acts. Here’s how the Kindness Cards work: 1. Firstly, order a free pack of kindness cards at We’ll post the cards to your mailbox at no cost. 2. When the kindness cards arrive, think of a kind act that you could do for

someone. For example, you could leave flowers on your colleague’s desk, pay for someone’s coffee or leave chocolates on your neighbour’s doorstep. 3. Here’s the fun part. When you do a kind act – do it anonymously. 4. Leave a Kindness Card behind alongside your kind act so that the recipient knows that they have received an anonymous act of kindness. When the boy’s father went to pay, he was speechless and enormously grateful when he was told that the haircut had been paid for – and he was given the Kindness Card. After they left the salon, my hairdresser

told me that the boy’s mother had recently died, and that the father’s business had gone bankrupt, but he insisted on ensuring that his children were always well presented. She asked why I chose that family to help? To this day, it just felt timely and right. ver wondered why being told to “get real” often feels yucky to you? Getting real in this reality, more often than not, is where someone else gets to deliver their judgment of you, disguised as truth. They give you the ‘cold, hard truth’, or tell you to take a ‘good, hard look’ in the mirror. It contracts your world, and eliminates any sense of possibility. Basically, it’s where you get to be wrong and judge yourself forever. It has nothing to do with what’s actually true. If you desire to get real with yourself, you must be willing to be totally vulnerable. Vulnerability is not about being weak. Vulnerability is to ‘be as the open wound’, with no barriers, no judgment, and being willing to see everything as it truly is, beyond what others believe, say, do or think. It is being willing to see you as you truly are, beyond what you believe, say, do, think or judge about

you. Vulnerability will always create a sense of lightness, expansion and space in your world. You have been taught that the things that feel the most solid and real are what’s true for you, but it’s actually the opposite of what it appears to be! When you are being vulnerable, you can acknowledge and follow what feels expansive and light and has a greater sense of possibility. You recognise that ‘lightness’ as the truth of you, and the judgments, the heaviness, the solidity and the contraction as the lies of you that are not actually real. If you are willing to use your awareness of what is heavy/contractive and light/expansive for you, you will become aware of what is actually possible in your life – and if you choose more of what is light and expansive, your life gets better too! ‘Getting real’ in this reality means judging you into more limitation and

less possibility. Vulnerability is being willing to know what is true for you – regardless of what anyone else says. With vulnerability, you go “Wow, I have got way more going on for me than I ever realised!” You see the good, bad and ugly of you – but you don’t judge it as good, or bad, or ugly. What actually makes something good, bad or ugly? Your judgment of it! If you didn’t judge you, you would have to see how beautiful you truly are. If you didn’t judge you, you would have to recognise that the things you have judged as most wrong about you are actually your greatest strengths! Would you be willing to ‘get real’ with yourself – even if it means realising you are not nearly as messed up as you think you are? n our privileged society, we are too frequently shown that instant gratification is something that should be constantly validated. When it comes to health, this instant fix-it mentality is validated by orthodox medicine’s symptomatic pill-prescribing approach. When I was a little munchkin, I was raised in an environment that condoned that type of mentality, just like everyone I can remember. Yes, mum made sure that we ate our vegetables, takeout was a total rarity, and dad was pretty consistent at reminding us how economical a sandwich was as a snack (it was only about 20¢ per sandwich back then). But still, as is too often the case, when it came to health or a lack thereof, we shared the same mentality as the majority of the population; that health and sickness were separate to nutrition and lifestyle, and a prescription from the doctor was what was needed. What fools we were, and it wasn’t until I began studying naturopathy that these thought processes evolved! On one hand, it shows how resilient

our bodies are, that they can adapt and withstand so much abuse from the diet when it should be the most nourishing aspect of our lives. On the other hand, as time progresses, the poisoning of our diets progressively worsens, so the obvious link between poor diet and inter-related disease is becoming more prominent. Take, for example, the consumption of bad cholesterols (low density lipoproteins) and the development of heart disease. Cardiovascular disease can be improved dramatically through correct dietary intervention. On that note, so can diabetes type 2! And, no, I don’t mean in the way that most dietitians do it by just switching all your foods to sugar-free chemical substitutes. kay, the theme of this article and edition is ‘Get Real’ so as a health care professional I would like to bring it back to basics. Having worked in the health and wellness industry for most of my life as well as having been on a huge spiritual, emotional and physical journey over the last 15 years, I have come across and experienced almost all the modalities out there. There is so much information that if we followed all the expert advice we would find ourselves very confused. There is so much conflicting evidence about how we should eat, exercise, meditate, take supplements, do yoga, use crystals, spiritual guidance, clearing emotional baggage and so on. As a practitioner of acupuncture my belief is that if we can still the mind, calm the spirit, and de-stress the body,

Coming out of the closet is ok!

i! My name is Shauna and I am a hedonist. The pursuit of fun, pleasure and ease has dogged my entire life. I have never stuck to a diet or exercise program for longer than about morning tea-time. I would rather read a book, walk along the beach or play with my cat. I’d rather eat cheese and crackers with a glass of red wine. I hate regimes, rules and gyms. Try being a fitness and health guru with that shameful secret!! I am finally out-ing myself! No more feeling guilty for not working hard enough, having days off or laughing too much. I now do what my body feels like doing. (Actually, I was addicted to control and worry, not fun or happiness. Who knew? I just thought I was lazy.) What’s hedonism and what can be done about it? It’s been defined as the pursuit of pleasure and for a very long time, that has been judged as bad, superficial, greedy and pointless. Being called a hedonist was not a compliment.

Desires are meant to be overcome, not indulged! It’s part of how indulging our senses – and the body – has been judged as a sin. You’re supposed to work hard now, and look forward to your reward, maybe, if you get to heaven (after your body is dead). No pain, no gain, right? Control, control, control those appetites and desires!! A hedonist is actually someone who enjoys the pleasures of life, who chooses pleasure rather than pain – and pain can be emotional, physical, financial, psychological and more. What if being able to relax and enjoy your body was the key to changing your life in every area – not just how you look? Here’s what I’ve found: Our bodies are aware and conscious partners with us. Not just meat suits! Working with my body has led me to more health, wealth, fun, vitality and

happiness. And more relaxation. I’m a confirmed hedonist now. But it’s like we can’t easily hear what our bodies truly require – like shouting through a thick glass window, so you only receive a muffled, jumbled response. What cuts through the barrier? For me, as an analytical overthinker, Access Consciousness® Body Work has been the key. Water Connection



ater is the conduit for our senses, our connection to the environment. Our very cells resonate with water and if we are conscious or not of this, it seats us fully into our surrounds, transporting us with its sound, motion and simple presence. Where water meets land is a highly fertile zone – we can’t ignore this fact as we observe the life and productivity that we encounter in this zone near seashore or creek. Indigenous cultures have strong spiritual bonds with water and see it as connected to the land and the total environment as well as themselves being integral to this connection and hence responsible for its health and care. Western culture tends to overlook this connection and the nature of water and view it solely as a resource. More is coming to light as in ‘The Secret Life of Water’ the works of Masaru Emoto. Water has been found to have a memory that will conduct and react to emotional states projected on it. In a place where contemplation

and positive thought is projected, water in your environment offers support. Inviting water into our living spaces encourages this fertility into our lives. In my experience I’m asked to create waterscapes for many reasons. The most common is adding movement and sound or wanting to have fish and encourage birds and wildlife to the area. Dig a little deeper and the common denominator is wanting to stop, take a breather and to process and release the information and emotions that we accumulate in our daily lives. Even a small feature by the front door encourages a transition to this space as part of a coming-home ritual. A waterfall is as mesmerizing as a fire. Some practical design principles in bringing water into a landscape include keeping the direction of the stream or waterfall in line with the fall of the land. Unless some major earth works are possible, it just does not ring true subconsciously if the water flow is against the predominant fall of the terrain.

Areas can be built up to achieve a high waterfall but we have also found smaller waterfalls are better and much more interesting than one major drop. Also consider that there are not many flat “step” like falls in nature, the more random scurries and falls as you would find in a natural formed stream actually feel better to us. These more natural designs also act as a flow form as in biodynamic processes; they channel and whirl the water increasing its oxygen content. You can also create different water sounds from low rumbles to more splashing pitches by simply changing the way water is channelled and bounced off surfaces. A landscape is complete with the presence of water in any form, be it a small stream, pond or fresh water rock pool for swimming. The ambience of a landscape is completely altered and enriched once this element is added.

often hear people say that they are going well for a while and then hit a slump. I wonder if, during this slump in their energy, they have continued to feel grateful. Often we feel weary or tired and equate this with “something’s wrong” rather than something’s right. Many of my students hit a slump just before or after a breakthrough of insight. It may be that they’ve just processed a huge amount of feelings that have been suppressed for a long time. This has drained their life force but is vital to their healing process. I say to them “you never know, you could be healing cancer right now”. Hidden blessing indeed. It could be that the energy that they are carrying is just getting too much and it’s time to let it go. If they hadn’t felt the heaviness, they wouldn’t have found the hidden blessing of surrender. Guilt is one of the heaviest of all vibrations. When we carry what is

not ours, we allow ourselves to be subject to massive toxic vibrations. When my students allow others their own decisions, they stop taking away other’s responsibility and give them a real chance to grow spiritually. In the process, they heal their own health – the hidden blessing of recovering from toxic guilt! Being a witness to thousands of people’s process over the past 25 years has led me to realise the peace of process; allowing ourselves to stand in a place of peace, no matter what, matters. We can stand the slump. We acknowledge what is serving us to heal. We hear the magic whisper, “let go”. When we are doing something right, our energy will fluctuate. Our job is to feel grateful for the change, keep listening for our guidance and heed our body’s messages. It is not the time to indulge in negativity or behaviours that mask the healing we are heading for. ‘Keep the faith’ is a good phrase to

remember. Keep the faith that all is well. All is in divine and perfect order. Just ride the wave all the way to the shore. Let yourself enjoy the ride, find ways to enjoy the ride. Perhaps the slump in your energy gives you permission to slow down. Enjoy. Perhaps lacking your usual vitality forces you to be quiet, take aim and focus better. It is all of service to you. Do you realise how powerful the slump can be in getting you to where you need and want to be? Allow it. Don’t judge it. Don’t buckle to it. Just ride it. Every wave has a focus. It builds and glides towards the beach without really caring who is looking. It reaches its goal as an important part of the whole ocean. And then allows itself to be drawn back out to sea again and be a part of another adventure. All is well. Allow yourself to have the adventure. Allow yourself to enjoy it – especially the slumps.

their own energy field, and to resolve the limiting beliefs and traumas that have been stopping them from living a healthy and happy life. In the case of traumatic or stressful events in a person’s life, the imprinted memories become lodged in their local matrix, and the fight/flight response from the body does not resolve or ‘discharge’. (It’s important to note here that to a child, a traumatic event might be as little as their teddy losing an arm, or as big as losing a parent.) This means a person will be re-experiencing the trauma or stress as if it is happening now, in this space and time, even though the initial event may have happened decades ago. This is why no matter how hard we try to change our behaviours or beliefs with our conscious willpower, themes of experience will continue in our lives that trigger the same beliefs and feelings as the original event. Positive thinking, talk therapy, classic psychology and Western medicine can only take us so far. When our unconscious belief system is inconsistent with the positive thoughts we are using, it just can’t work and deep healing is thwarted. MR’s effectiveness comes from its extremely efficient ability to find core memories that hold limiting beliefs, whether the client knows what the memory is or not. Importantly, the CLIENT is the one doing the healing


work themselves. The practitioner acts as a guide and pathfinder to assist the client to locate a memory within their matrix, and help them stay within the experience until it is resolved. Once the memory is found, the client is able to enter the memory scene and speak to their former self, known as their ‘ECHO’. The Echo is released from their trauma and a new, empowering belief created. The client effectively returns their energy system to the original matrix blueprint that they were born to live. MR does not deny that traumatic events took place, it instead helps the client to change their perspective on what the event means. They are able to have a direct experience of an event in a controlled, safe and positive manner as they are 100% conscious throughout the process. It is a far more gentle technique for trauma than some traditional psychological techniques as it

does not require the client to fully re-live a trauma, but to view it in a detached manner. Of course empathic people may experience an emotional response to the trauma, but are also empowered to take charge of their own healing and to very quickly release and resolve the traumatic event once and for all. MR enables the client to experience the event and their subsequent personal beliefs within a new context and on their terms. Tapping is scientifically documented to reduce stress hormones in the body, shift belief systems, and dramatically improve stressful emotional states. MR uses both of these techniques in an extremely focused and intentional way, and in the short time that MR has been in existence, the anecdotal results are dramatic and life transforming. Healing of chronic pain and illness, transformed relationships and long term ‘stuck’ behaviours, such as addictions, are being released. In coming years, this will also be quantifiable. The new science of Epigenetics is gaining momentum and understanding amongst the holistic and spiritual community. Its acceptance still has a way to go within mainstream science and modern medicine. However, the crest of revolutionary change is where miracles, transformation and radical healing can take place.

Sunshine Coast sees birth of world’s first non-mainstream or ‘alternative’ news service

He says he was motivated to set up his new not-forprofit venture, the Alternative News Project, as a vehicle for change and a platform for people to share news and information. “I think it’s fair to say we’ve reached a point where the disconnect between mainstream media ‘reality’ and what is really going on means that most people in society are not getting the full story – about almost everything and anything,” said Duncan., an online news service that for the first time brings all the non-mainstream, alternative and independent news and information into one massive newsfeed, allows each user to personalise content according to their interests. “I wanted people to have easy access to information they are being denied by the mainstream. ecently I was asked “how to deal with a partner who is on Facebook or online all the time?” It is difficult to answer, unless we know what the partner is communicating about and why, or whether he/she is playing games (I assume the question wasn’t about professional work). If the partner is online all the time, it could be a game addiction or addiction to social media. Or, it could be online cheating – so called cyberbetrayal. With addictions to games and social media, foremost we have to tactfully help our partner to accept the fact that he/she is addicted to social media or games. Such acceptance is very difficult; and even harder is to get over such addictions by oneself without professional help. Addiction is often connected with loneliness and/or emotional or psychological problems. It is true that we may use software like ‘Freedom’ or ‘Self

Control’ that helps manage addictive behaviours, but often the basic problems are not dealt with at the same time. When our partner is playing games or is on social media so long that it affects his/her normal life, it is recommended to see a psychologist or a counsellor who specialises in the treatment of addiction. I am a relationship and couple professional counsellor, so I will concentrate on more sinister online behaviour – cyber-betrayal. Initially, we have to understand what constitutes cheating or infidelity in close or intimate relationships. Cheating is any behaviour violating sexual and/or emotional exclusivity with our partner, and is always done in secret. To recognise such behaviour online we get YES answers to the following questions: • Is our partner defensive when asked about his/her time spent online, and/or doesn’t respond when asked about it? • Is our partner keeping secret what he/she said or laughed about when online? • Is he/she switching off the screen when we are approaching? • Is he/she hiding the phone, tablet, or did he/she change his/her password on the computer? • Is the partner also online late at night?

If the answers are positive, there is a big chance that our partner has an increased emotional connection with somebody else and it threatens our close relationship. In fact, if this is done in secret, there is likelihood that he/she will soon go or is already going through cyber-betrayal and possibly physical infidelity. In my experience, most infidelity is not caused by lust or sexual attraction but the gradual build-up of dissatisfaction (or our perception of dissatisfaction) of our needs in an intimate relationship. When we feel dissatisfied, a gradual loss of trust follows together with erection of a wall between us. Finally, an attraction to others outside the current


intimate relationship sets in and a search elsewhere may start. What can we do? Unless there is firmly established openness in the relationship, unfortunately, we cannot do much by ourselves. Such a situation is deeply hurtful and our reactions can be inappropriate, based on anger; so, when we try to talk to our partner, the situation will most likely only get worse. Our partner will become defensive and later on he/ she will most likely resort to offensive language and possibly aggressive behaviour to overpower and silence us. When angry, we may make further mistakes, e.g. by shaming our partner on social media. However, we may instead address the situation and jointly seek the help from a professional couple/ relationship counsellor. Such a counsellor can help us and our partner work together to save the relationship by identifying the damaging effects of the secretive online behaviour and by helping us to build on the positive aspects of the relationship. The sooner we address our worries, needs and/or cyber betrayal with the professional assistance, the better the chances of a positive outcome for the relationship. Visit: Email:

They are the ones that cannot perceive beyond duality and will get trapped in outside listening and seeing rather than inside seeing and listening. Joyride – here’s how



ome lessons in life come from the most unexpected of places. When it comes to mindfulness you’d assume those lessons would come from Eastern philosophies or Western psychology. Mindfulness has become increasingly popular and there are many reasons why. It’s been shown to alleviate stress, reduce anxiety, relieve drug and alcohol dependence, and help with many types of illness including auto-immune diseases. Mindfulness is all about being in the present moment. Not worrying about the future, not dwelling on the past. Being here, now, moment by moment. Simple. But not easy. There’s a theory that there are only two motivating forces in life; love and fear. Love is desirable. Fear can really do some damage. So how can mindfulness help? A while ago I was telling a wiser person than myself about all my fears and how they were running my life. She asked me, “What is there for you to be fearful of? Right here, right now in this moment?” My answer surprised me as much as her question. “Nothing.”

If I keep my thoughts to the present moment what do I have to fear? Absolutely nothing. Simple concept. Hard to achieve. But apparently not if you’re a psychopath. Kevin Dutton is a research psychologist. He wrote a piece called The Wisdom of Psychopaths: What Saints, Spies, and Serial Killers Can Teach Us about Success. Kevin visited Broadmoor, the best-known highsecurity psychiatric hospital in England, to interview the inmates. What he found is surprising. One of his interview subjects told him, “The thing about fear, or the way I understand fear, I suppose – because, to be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever really felt it – is that most of the time it’s completely unwarranted anyway. What is it they say? Ninety-nine percent of the things people worry about never happen. So what’s the point? I think the problem is that people spend so much time worrying about what might happen, what might go wrong, that they completely lose sight of the present. They completely overlook the fact that, actually, right now, everything’s

perfectly fine. So the trick, whenever possible, I propose, is to stop your brain from running on ahead of you.” Kevin writes: “This pragmatic endorsement of the principles and practices of what might otherwise be described as mindfulness is typical of the psychopath. A psychopath’s rapacious proclivity to live in the moment, to ‘give tomorrow the slip and take today on a joyride’ (as another inmate rather whimsically, puts it), is well documented – and at times can be stupendously beneficial.” A lesson in mindfulness from the most unlikely of sources. Perhaps it’s time to let our inner-psychopaths off the leash just a little. Maybe not with ‘rapacious proclivity’ but a little less fear and a little more joyriding is bound to improve our quality of life. Not all ingredients are required to be included on the label and there are many names for the one chemical. The list of dangerous ingredients used in cosmetics is quite long – the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health has stated that nearly 900 of the chemicals used in cosmetics are toxic. Most conventional skin, personal and hair care products contain TEAs, DEAs, Sulfates, Glycols, Parabens, Synthetic and Artificial ingredients, Ethoxylates, Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde derivatives. A large number of toothpastes, mouthwash/ mouth sprays for example contain Aspartame and Triclosan. They have been: • Linked to possible carcinogenic activity. • Believed to have an estrogenic impact on the body. • US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has linked methylparabens in particular to metabolic, developmental, hormonal, and neurological disorders, as well as various cancers. • Used in over-the-counter personal products as a preservative to extend the shelf life of the product. • Found in face, body moisturisers, body wash, deodorants and cleansers. • Phthalates, plasticising ingredients (present in nearly threequarters of 72 products tested by the Environmental Working Group), which

have been linked to birth defects in the reproductive system of boys and lower sperm-motility in adult men, among other problems, which can damage immune and nervous systems, reproductive and immune toxins. • Toluene, made from petroleum or coal tar, and found in most synthetic fragrances. Chronic exposure linked to anaemia, lowered blood cell count, liver or kidney damage, and may affect a developing foetus. • Triclosan is a registered pesticide. It is an antimicrobial active ingredient contained in a variety of products where it acts to slow or stop the growth of bacteria, fungi, and mildew. Found in a large number of personal care products, it is also apparently used in toothpaste to stop gingivitis. Brushing your teeth with any toothpaste containing Triclosan can expose you to the harmful effects which include impaired heart and muscle function and hypothyroidism. hen I was a student of Herbal Medicine I was lucky enough to spend a week at Pindari Herb Farm, just outside of Launceston, Tasmania. Owned and run by the everknowledgeable Ken Atherton, little did I know that this experience would not only increase my knowledge of medicinal herbs, but also open the door to the world of natural skincare production. Ken, a retired pharmacist, is a man with a serious passion for all things natural, and for producing products of the highest quality from beautiful, energetic plants grown on his property. He was very quick to point out that in times gone by, the role of many pharmacists had been to mix and create potions for customers on an individual basis. If a client was suffering from eczema for example, he would select suitable ingredients, mostly herbal tinctures and essential oils, and mix them with a neutral cream base. The

‘Old Dog’ Bones Diet Step 1: Make the broth – bone broth is a traditional cure for inflamed gut lining, IBS, inflammation, and any viral illness. When your grandmother/mother made you chicken soup, she knew what she was doing. You can do that too as a “puppy parent” for your fur babies. Into a large pot place: 12 cups of water 2 cups of oxtails 2 cups of pork soft rib bones 1 cup diced celery 1 tsp ginger powder 1 tbsp turmeric powder or fresh grated turmeric root 4 tbsp fresh basil 6 cloves of garlic 3 tsp of apple cider vinegar or wine – this helps dissolve the minerals out of the bones into the stew. Bring to the boil and cook on low heat for 4 hours or longer – a slow cooker overnight is helpful.

Remove the bones and discard, leaving the gel and soft cartilage in the stew. DO NOT FEED COOKED BONES! Step 2: Add the following – ½ cup rice 2 cups carrots 1 cup beets 4 cups greens (chard, beet greens, spinach, broccoli etc) 3 cups of sweet potatoes diced NOTE: If your dog is overweight remove the rice and cut the carrots and sweet potatoes by half in this recipe, you can add more kale, spinach, and broccoli, though enough water to cover. Add 1 cup of liver or heart muscle. Bring to the boil. Cover, reduce heat and cook until the rice is done. Store in the refrigerator. Just before serving, add 1 tbsp omega 3 oils of fish/cod liver/flax seed oil per 20kg dog.

The spine, spinal cord and tissue coverings function as a unit. It is essential for health and vitality to have dynamic movement of the entire spinal column of all vertebrates, your pets included, so your nervous system can function at its best capacity. If movement and function is decreased, even at just one segment (a condition called vertebral subluxation), the animal’s entire body has to distort in compensatory response to that lack of motion. Many times this


loss of spinal motion is accompanied by a loss of spinal alignment which may have an effect on the brain, spinal cord and spinal nerves. These are all living tissues, and if they are put under pressure, stretched or twisted by a vertebral subluxation for a sustained period, it will negatively affect the function and the health of your pet. The entire body can be affected by a subluxation, because it interrupts the normal nerve communication between the animal’s body and brain. As an example, a loss of spinal motion interrupts the normal firing and activation of sensory nerves that tell the brain where the animal’s body is in space at any given time. This causes imbalance, as the animal is less able to orient itself in relation to its environment, which in turn makes it predisposed to injury and bodily dysfunction. How can you tell if your pet needs help? Here are some things to look for that will help you recognise a potential need for an adjustment: • Your animal experiences pain and irritation when touched, petted or lifted. • Your animal is reluctant or has

difficulty when climbing stairs or jumping. • Your animal has difficulty when getting up after lying down. • Your animal exhibits negative changes in attitude or behaviour. • Your animal shows an apparent lameness or change in the way it moves. Behaviours such as these usually indicate that the animal has an underlying imbalance in its body which will hinder your pet in achieving its optimum potential for health and vitality.

Are you stressed, fatigued and unmotivated? Could you solve your happiness puzzle with these missing puzzle pieces? Could it be bacteria? Researchers at McMaster University have supportive evidence that bacteria residing in the gut influence brain chemistry and behaviour. When there was a change in the gut flora of the test subjects increased anxiety and behaviour change was noted. For years these bacterias have been seen to be harmless, but the negative impact of specific strains of bacteria on the brain are documented. Pathogenic bacteria have the potential to cause havoc on your digestive system and indirectly may cause Serotonin to drop. Serotonin is your happy, relaxing neurotransmitter. Not many people are aware that it is predominantly made in the gut. Functional bacteria (the good guys) are often overlooked, they assist in breaking down your food and keeping your gut healthy.

Is it in your DNA? MTHFR is a very important enzyme that is needed for detoxification, methylation, SAMe and glutathione production. But for some the gene may be dysfunctional. Considering SAMe is imperative for good sleep and mood and glutathione is important for energy production, we want sufficient levels of both. Clinically we see MTHFR gene mutations frequently and with this mutation there may be a greater chance of developing depression, anxiety, chronic fatigue, migraines or insomnia just to name a few.
