e are hearing a lot about ‘Food as Medicine’ in the media and this month we have an extended feature on this topic. Pete Evans (on our cover and story p16-17) is doing an extraordinary job of sharing many ‘out of the box’ messages with the general public about food and health, it’s also great to see how he shares his love of cooking and creating with his family and the community! Whether we go paleo, vegan, gluten free, grain free, raw, Ayurvedic… hopefully we can also be non-judgemental about what others choose, as there can be a plethora of factors behind people’s choices. David Wolfe, Don Tolman and so many of our Australian writers advocate the power of whole foods and they also talk about cultivating a joy of living, supporting local farmers, businesses and the planet. Many cultures talk about blessing food, cooking with joy, being present while eating, chewing food slowly and creating a space to eat that is conducive to good digestion and health.

Interestingly New York Times Best Selling Author, Anita Moorjani (our cover girl last year) said once she was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer, she spent nearly four years trying every diet and healing regime to the point of becoming very fearful about eating the ‘wrong food’. After her near death experience (NDE) she had full awareness about how she created the cancer and chose to return to be her ‘real self’ and so her body chemistry changed and the cancer completely disappeared. wasn’t the only one excited to learn more about this delicious cuisine. Ten other foodies paired up and spent a ‘hands on’ morning exploring the delicious menu that Vicki had created for them. As the morning progressed, each pair sliced and diced and prepared a scrumptious meal that they would enjoy with the others over a glass of chilled wine at the end of the class. Throughout the day, the sound of light chatter filled the room, as did the smell of spices and chocolate, accompanied with incredible flavours of Central America, Spain and Arabia. Each pair made ‘Gracious’ Mole Chicken with Chocolate; Mexican Rice; Mini Stuffed Peppers with Gamba; ‘Ariba’ Guacamole; and the most delicious cake I have ever tasted. The ‘Inca’ chocolate cake had a mouth-watering soft centre and was infused with chilli flakes and sprinkled with salt flakes. The flavours sent my tastebuds into blissful overdrive. Sharing a meal with everyone else and hearing each person’s cooking experience was a beautiful way to finish off the day. And with her wealth of knowledge and her willingness to share, Vicki has certainly

created a great space for food lovers. So how did the idea come about for Vicki to create her Cooking School? Whilst travelling the globe and having lived in multiple countries, Vicki immersed herself in the learning of different cultures and spices. She was fortunate to learn from the experts and with her passion and knowledge settled in Caloundra and opened her well-known ‘boutique spice emporium’ Red Hot Chilli Pepper. Having successfully run Spice Blending Classes for the past two years, Vicki decided it was time to start running cooking classes also. Each month Vicki runs a different class where you can go along, take some time out, and learn a new cuisine and technique from a different part of the world. With a passion for people, travel, and food, Vicki has combined her loves to offer hands-on classes from Persian and Moroccan, to Sri Lankan, and Mediterranean. I needed a change and when I started to follow my joy with food and started cooking for family and friends, I inherently became known as the Gourmet Tradie and it just kept growing from there. Q: Have you always enjoyed creating with food? A: I remember in grade five, we all had to cook a dish. Most of the kids were making cookies and cupcakes. I did this sushi that I created using whiting, a type of white fish. It tasted horrible but the teachers were blown away by how creative it was! Luckily, I’m much better at combining ingredients these days. Q: Tell me about your creativity with food. A: I have a unique way of asking

Q: Tell me about your Masterchef experience A: I had just landed in LA and I received a message asking me to be in Melbourne for 4 days of auditions the following week. I jumped on a plane, did the gruelling auditions and flew back to the States. I was so overwhelmed with my willingness to do whatever it took for more to show up in my life. I made it to the top 200 and I think my disappointment for not getting on the show lasted a sum total of 8 seconds. It showed me that I was capable of anything. Ingredients: 2 large or 300g organic oranges 3 cups of almond meal 3 large eggs 1½ tsp of gluten free baking powder ¼ cup of coconut oil ¼ cup of coconut nectar or raw honey Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 160 degrees (fan forced) and line a round 20cm baking tin with baking paper. 2. Wash and slice off the ends of the oranges and then deseed and cut them into wedges. 3. Place the oranges into a food

processor (or you could even use a stick blender to do this part) and pulse until they are chopped super fine. 4. In a large bowl add the pulverised orange, almond meal, eggs, baking powder, coconut oil and coconut nectar and mix together for a couple of minutes, until well combined. 5. Pour the mixture into the cake tin and bake for approximately 40-45 minutes. It may still seem a bit moist in the middle but as long as it springs back when touched it is cooked. It will harden as it sets. 6. Once you have made the syrup, you can skewer some holes throughout the cake and then

pour the whole lot over the top and let it soak in while it is still cooling in the tin. Alternatively you can pour it over individual pieces as it is served up.

PANEER PAKORA – A Timeless Treat RECIPE HEIDI TSCHANNEN – the Eumundi Medicine Man team

Ingredients: Paneer (curd), cut into chucks 2 cups of chickpea flour 1 tbsp self-raising flour 1 tbsp plain flour ½ tsp of rock salt 1 tsp turmeric powder Water (enough to make a pancake consistency batter) Ghee for deep frying You can also use a huge array of vegetables for these delicious treats, cauliflower, eggplant and spinach for example.

Method: Mix up the batter and let it rest. If the batter will cover the curd without all falling off or on the other extreme collecting in a big lump, then you have it right. Add a little water or flour and get it right. It is a little like life, a balance. Dip the curd in the batter and drop into the ghee. After a minute you should be able to move the Pakora and see how it faired. Make any adjustments to the batter

umans have been hunting and gathering since the early appearance of Homo Erectus around two million years ago. There is archaeological evidence this ancient ancestor of modern humans was hunting and gathering, fabricating tools to process animal products and using fire to cook food. It is only for the last ten thousand years that humans have been cultivating to generate their staple foods. This has had some economic benefits, but some detrimental effects on human health. This is explained by the hypothesis of the “Thrifty Genes”. Thrifty Genes are genes which enable individuals to efficiently collect and process food to deposit fat during periods of food abundance. The problem with this is that these genes are overworking in modern societies as these times

of abundance never stop. The consequence is obesity and diabetes from a high carbohydrate diet. The proponents of Paleolithic diet or “Caveman Diet” are trying to emulate those early environmental conditions in regards to the types of food to eat. These are animal products, nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruit. This is a clean diet with no processed food. However, some people might not get the full benefit of it if they have some issues with gut permeability or “leaky gut”. For them, there should be a period of healing before going into a full “Paleo Diet”. Willful Blindness

at the Expense of Health

here is a plethora of information that seeps into our inboxes, newspapers, social media feeds, magazines, televisions and conversations. The buzz is around the alarming obesity rates, heart disease, cancer, diabetes and autoimmunity. Alongside this information are conflicting reasons, scapegoats and theories as to why this is happening and what should we do about it. It’s also become obvious that what we are doing is not working and we must do something different. The trend is going away from a pill for everything and back to the basics of Hippocrates – “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”. I’ve been a nutritionist for 30 years and I’ve never seen more about food and health then I have in the last five years, for me the tide has turned and the healing has started. Having said that, it amazes me that amongst our health professionals there is ‘Willful Blindness’ which means there is information out there that they

should know but don’t know because they choose not to know. In other words they ignore the obvious at the peril of their patients and the population at large. Willful blindness is also seen in a percentage of the population. However, the trend is changing, more mainstream health professionals are beginning to see food is the answer, the problem is that most primary care practitioners do less than 12 hours of nutrition in their university education and become confused at the conflicting advice in mainstream media and science. Raw vegan, vegetarian, macrobiotic, paleo, high carb, low fat, high protein, no sugar – it’s like a nightmare for the uneducated and uninitiated. As a nutritionist I’ve seen it all and tried a few too. But the common thread is that it is about healing with real food, local, organic, unprocessed, unpackaged, no GMO, nanotechnology, additives, preservatives or flavourings. If you eat flesh and produce from animals then these animals should be

fed a healthy natural diet free from drugs. In other words we must go back to the foods of our ancestors; back to the foods our evolutionary body has evolved to eat while living in this modern world. Food is definitely a starting point, but what many people fail to realise is that our evolutionary bodies are affected by a blue ray from the sun which tells the biological clock; night and day as well as the seasons of the year. These indicate a change in biochemistry which helps with the health of the body. Defying sleep and seasonal activities (stress) and foods increases the stress on the mind and body impacting on our health and wellbeing. Food as Medicine for Body, Soul and Planet

BODY In recent years there has been a trend within the health conscious population away from the traditional naturopathic style of a ‘whole food plant-based’ diet, toward a high animal protein, high fat diet. In my opinion a ‘whole food plantbased’ diet is the key to good health and longevity as proven by thousands of comprehensive studies from all over the world, including the largest nutritional study ever conducted, ‘The China Study’ by Professor T. Colin Campbell, and the most recent study out of Sydney University published this year, which found that high animal protein diets were almost as bad for your health as smoking. A whole food plant-based diet is both the prevention and the cure to the common and deadly diseases that scourge our society. It is the basis of the treatment used by all the famous healing institutes around the world that regularly ‘cure’ terminal patients using diet alone.

Be assured that any nutritive substances found in animal products (including protein) can easily be obtained by eating plant foods. Clinically I guide my patients towards reducing their consumption of animal foods and replacing them with appropriate plant-based whole foods. SOUL A new term ‘Carnism’ has emerged. Carnism describes how we choose to love one animal (dogs for example) and eat another (cows). It is based on our conditioning from birth rather than being an innate human trait and varies significantly between races. In other countries they would eat dogs and revere cows.

Carnism also describes the way we choose to remain ignorant of, or even accept as okay, the shocking realities of animal agriculture. We would never murder our pets or personally subject an animal to torture and misery, yet by consuming animal products we are supporting the torture of billions of animals around the world every year. By choosing to eat a plant-based diet we are aligning consciously with our soul intention of kindness and love. PLANET The human appetite for animal flesh is a driving force behind virtually every major category of environmental damage now threatening the human future – deforestation, erosion, fresh water scarcity, air and water pollution, climate change, biodiversity loss, social injustice (six million children starving to death annually), the destabilisation of communities, and the spread of disease. Food, Your Stomach and its Consciousness

ho would have thought that real fulfilment is stored in the stomach? It is integral to understand the stomach body consciousness first. From a Medical Intuitive point of view, the stomach is all about digestion of life, intolerance, rejection, and the conscious mind. For the stomach, life is food and all that we are conscious of and all our learning lessons need to be digested. It is best to give an example of one of my American clients. John, a 44-year-old man (name changed for confidentiality) was experiencing intolerance to wheat and vomited if he had any. He had been checked for celiac disease but he was all clear and all other medical tests could not find what was wrong. During the session he shared that he always felt rejected when he had to lecture at work. He thought he was being judged and his perception of what others thought of him was ‘small minded’ or not conscious. He was well-respected and admired but

John could not see it. The story he kept digesting was that he was a failure when it came to teaching. His conscious mind (stomach) needed to be empty (rejection and vomiting) so that John could selfrealise he was actually admired. The rejection he felt was of himself. As we went deeper this story originated from nine years old when he had to speak in a school play and was laughed at by a boy. Just prior to that he had eaten a doughnut (wheat). His stomach had digested that when he publicly speaks, he would be rejected and not tolerated. And each time he lectured his stomach was helping him to be more conscious and digest life as seeing he was admired. Once John came to this awareness, he reflected on what people were saying after his presentations and digesting the new story. He was consciously digesting that he was fully accepted and he acknowledged their compliments. The old feelings of

rejection and not being tolerated left his body. Oh, and by the way he was able to eat wheat again as the old story was gone. His body couldn’t connect wheat and public speaking as bad anymore. John’s journey continued and he became the Rep teaching for his employer. He was totally fulfilled in life on all levels. So remember your thoughts, your perception, how you interpret life and your experiences are all FOOD for your mind, body, spirit to digest and be really conscious of. The more you see the love and beauty in everything the more fulfilled you will be. And if not, review how you are digesting the ‘story/action’. Are you tolerant/ broadminded/flexible? Are you rejecting yourself and interpreting it as others rejecting you? Your stomach will talk to you always. And most of all bless and thank all life/food for what you are about to receive. e all know that food can affect our weight, skin, cardiovascular system and energy, but did you know it can significantly affect your mood and mind? There is always more that can be done in correcting your diet for mental stamina, calmness, clarity, motivation and happiness. A diet centred around food for mood should include eating ideally grain free, increasing high nutrient value foods, significantly increasing the fats your brain loves and increasing fermented foods. Neurotransmitters are made from a huge range of nutrient cofactors, but the most clinically significant nutrients that are often low are zinc, vitamin B6 and magnesium. These nutrients are all essential for the formation of serotonin, dopamine and GABA. A naturally colourful, diversified vegetable loaded diet with a good level of proteins will ensure these vitamins are available. Why reduce the grains for a happy mind? Grains contain lectins, a known gut irritant, and phytic acid, which

inhibit bioavailability of nutrients needed for neurotransmitter production. Grains are often heavily farmed, so often are nutrient poor. And most importantly they almost always take place of what should be vegetables thus reducing mood boosting nutrient intake. The first questions I often get asked is, “Will I get constipated if I reduce grains?” Yes you may, but that is not normal. If you are constipated it is probably because you have either not increased your vegetable intake enough, you have not had enough water or your gut flora and/or enzyme activity is out of balance. In which case it is best to see a practitioner as there are many physiological factors that need addressing as one diet does not fit every single person. Fermented foods are becoming so popular and for good reason. Kefir, sauerkraut, Kombucha and Kimchi are all superb examples of imputing good bacteria into your gut. Bacteria help with increasing your nutrient absorption, providing precursors for neurotransmitters, balancing

inflammatory responses and digestion of your food. It is well documented that gut bacteria can indeed affect our mental state. The more of the good bacteria that are there, the more in favour your microbiome is for a happy mental state. Your brain is mostly made of fat so it is important to include plenty of good fats in your diet. Omega 3 fats fatty acids, naturally high in seafood, is a key nutrient in nerve function. Research shows us that omega 3s can significantly reduce inflammation in the body, and inflammation has been implicated as a contributing factor of many psychological imbalances. or thousands of years, traditions have been passed through generations on the healthimproving and healing properties that various foods can impact our body. This can be seen when we observe how the ancient Chinese, ancient Greeks, and the Aztecs relate their diet to the physiological benefit each food carries. The ancient Chinese are known to incorporate herbs like gingko and ginseng in their dishes not just for its beautiful flavour and aroma, but also to strengthen their immunity and overall wellness, especially so in the bitter cold of winter. The Aztecs were yet another great example of incorporating large portions of fresh vegetables and fruits in their daily diet. They also discovered the wonderful and medicinal use of chocolate and its high antioxidant content! Despite the hundred years of ‘generation gap’ and rapid development of our society, the interest in nutritional and natural medicine is growing faster than ever. One of the easiest ways to

achieve wellness is simply by selecting the right type of foods our body requires to function effectively. s a naturopath and someone who has been pushed to confront my own choices through disease, I have been through many diets, regimes and food systems over the past 10 years! OK, so you can’t have eggs, wheat, dairy or soy and you’re allergic to salicylates. So what can you eat?” said my friend, “I don’t know. I suppose pear, celery and beans?” I said. Thirty years ago and I had just come from the naturopaths. I was devastated but determined to stick to the diet I was given until my symptoms went away. Thank God things are different these days. These days I have no allergies. Why? Because of Dr Devi Nambudripad. She discovered a 21st century treatment for allergies. And now clients that were said to be allergic to substances can have them back in their daily life with no symptoms. It is a system which is non invasive and very accurate. Using Kinesiology’s muscle testing, the practitioner finds all the

allergies or sensitivities then proceeds to clear them one by one by tapping on certain acupressure points while the client is holding the allergen. After 25 hours of avoidance to that food, the client comes back to be checked to see if they have cleared that allergen. If it has cleared it is re-introduced into the diet and the next allergen is done and so on. A 30-year-old female who loved her wine but couldn’t drink it came to see me. She was found to be allergic to sulphur Dioxide or 220. After clearing her using NAET she was able to drink wine and was so happy to be able to socially drink again. Food can be your medicine but it can also be your enemy. Seemingly simple foods which other people can

tolerate, might not be tolerated by you. A 70-year-old lady came to see me with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Upon testing she was found to be allergic to Slippery Elm which she was taking for her IBS. After clearing the Slippery Elm her body was able to absorb it and utilise it properly. A lot of people are allergic to normal vitamins and minerals. Only after testing and treatment, can their body then absorb their vitamins and minerals. Heavy metals are also excreted after treatment by NAET. Who knew that almost all diseases had underlying allergies as the cause? When they are cleared their symptoms can disappear. and explore what they are. Share your choice with your partner or close friends. Open up and see what you begin to reflect. What happens after you make a choice? How can YOU clear them? This is where YOU become accountable and take responsibility. You have a variety of options to choose from. Option 1: Saying this to yourself in the moment is extremely powerful. You may need to say this to yourself a few times depending on what is inside you. After you say it, notice if you lighten up over the next few minutes. oday they are all healthy, enjoying a renewed sense of life and assisting others to tune in and listen to the ever present intuitive wisdom that guides all of us. David and Tanya are both John of God crystal light bed custodians, and yoga and meditation teachers. Additionally, David works as a Journey Therapy and Presence Facilitator. Tanya also owns the herbal dispensary at the Maleny Holistic Health Centre and is studying to be a naturopath. Their journey didn’t go the way they planned. David went to Brazil to see Saint John of God, a world-renowned medium and psychic surgeon. Oprah Winfrey and millions of others have witnessed the miracles of this man who says, “I do not cure anybody. God heals, and in his infinite goodness permits the Entities (Spirit Doctors and Saints) to heal and console my brothers.” Saint John of God told David that he would remove the brain tumour but he was to come back to see him in

two and a half years’ time. A later MRI scan showed the tumour was of no immediate concern. Tanya reduced the wide spread of cancer but eventually intuition guided her to radiation and chemotherapy. Caffery had surgery. Who can say why some people have such great success with natural therapies and faith healing, and others have surgery, radiation or chemotherapy? They can only comment on their experience and say that what Albert Einstein believed, so do they. Interestingly, while their outer journey has been challenging, the gift of quite inner knowing has led them down safe peaceful paths. ill Zimmermann has always had a strong connection with nature and its creatures. Being an active Volunteer Wildlife Carer for 25 years, Jill started with the ‘cute and fluffy’ birds and possums. Then in 2002 she started to rescue turtles and lizards and was shocked to see the injuries to Blue Tongue lizards because people thought they were snakes. It didn’t take long for Jill to realise the fear that many people have when they see a snake and Jill was moved to take venomous snake handling courses allowing her to work with them. connection and all of these teenagers were like angels when working with Jill and her snakes. Eventually, Jill provided animal assisted therapy with her snakes, including working with people with phobias, anxiety and even people who had been bitten. The results were powerful, helping people face their fears and build confidence and selfesteem. Shine Bright like a Diamond



s a child I would bury myself in a book, or wander alone amongst the giant horses in the forest behind my house (they were Clydesdales and I was 10!). Sometimes I really wanted to just crawl into a secret hidey hole and escape the ‘noise’ around me. As a teenager, I would still find solace in my books and seek the quiet companionship of animals, but I also added walking to my escapist repertoire. I walked, alone in my thoughts, breathing in my surroundings like oxygen. Being alone was always the key, because once home I had to resume my navigation through the erratic energy of my childhood home life. I didn’t know I was an introvert, I didn’t even know what an introvert was. It just felt like I was different, and not in a good way. School could be such a minefield. I remember being in what was labelled a ‘difficult’ class – lots of

boys and some very tough girls. My reticent personality made me a target for some of my more dominating classmates. Back then I wished I could find a response to match, but I just didn’t have it in me. I only wanted peace, harmony and for everyone to get along. My teacher was my saviour. He focused on my strengths (reading, writing and drawing) and he encouraged me to shine brightly in those areas. Jump forward to present day and I’m still by nature, an introvert. But I have really challenged myself to explore what I thought were my outermost limits as ‘the introvert’. Personal transformation has led me to accept that there are times when it is necessary for me to be in the spotlight. It’s a wonderful way to share my message and ignite the flame of transformation in others. Although it is still quite terrifying for me to ‘put myself out there’ amongst people I barely know, I recognise that

being able to share my knowledge and journey allows me to do what I adore, genuinely connect with people. I love to hear people’s stories, ask about their lives, share insights and be REAL. My surrender means I accept myself, as just myself. I still read, walk our dogs daily and spend time around my horse. I’ve also added regular meditation; yoga and energy work to my life because I understand that giving myself the space to breathe and just Be, energises me to my soul. This in turn means I can be the heartfelt giver, healer, confidante and mentor, I am. All of those aspects of me that people are drawn to and feel safe enough with to share their deepest feelings, their fears, their hopes, dreams and desires. So when it comes down to it, it doesn’t matter whether I’m an introvert, extrovert, or somewhere in between. The key is in being me. She sweetly put her mat right next to mine, found her own versions of the postures, lay like a rag doll along my back and did ‘her thing’ crawling under Dad’s downward-facing dog, giving me passionate kisses until she realised that Daddy’s lips are sweaty! We have strongly encouraged Kaia to be herself and to be aware since birth. We have three older daughters to learn from, all learning to navigate peergroup and life pressure, as they learn to be natural and true. Their happiness and misery comes from fitting in as much from standing out.

Q: How can I get my children to eat healthy? Is there something I can do? A: The easiest way to change the way children eat food is with the power of thought and intention! I know this sounds really easy and so simple and yet it works every time. I teach it and do it for my family. Let’s commence at the basics and science level. Thoughts are energy and we each have a natural gift or radar to tune in to these thoughts that are projected. For example if whilst I am chopping up the vegetables for my children and I am thinking negative thoughts about what a bad day I had, worrying if the children will eat the vegetables and lastly saying to myself ‘they probably won’t eat these anyway’ – guess what? I have just created that outcome with my thoughts. At dinner time the children will ‘feel/sense’ this and make your words/ thoughts come true. Yes it is the law of attraction but also projection. Thoughts are energy and as humans we tap in to

all energy not necessarily understanding it. Those thoughts gel or connect anything and everything including food. No you do not have to be psychic – it happens to everyone and everything. It is important to be conscious of what you are buying, cutting, chopping, cooking, preparing and serving when dealing with food. How you do it is by thinking love thoughts, seeing the family enjoying and then using your imagination. I actually pretend to sprinkle ‘love’ in to the food. When the children were younger I had a pot which I decorated saying LOVE and it was my ‘secret love potion’ and I would ‘sprinkle’ the love whilst cooking and the children would watch. They always commented how yummy the food was no matter what it was and even as teenagers and now adults. Presentation of food is important. If the food looks clean, colourful and presented in a fun way, anyone will eat it. For example, my boys could not eat

wheat but we still had pasta which was made from grated carrot lightly stir fried and covered in home-made tomato sauce. Consciously creating an ambiance will inspire them to eat. What is the energy like around dinner time? Are there candles? Soft music? Is it peaceful and inviting for dinner? If not then make it happen, as that is so much better for the digestive tract and also children will want to come and eat when it’s inviting. The key is to be very conscious of your thoughts and actions and create what you want and they will want that too. Allow the children depending on what age to help create the space and environment too with flowers, cloth napkins, making hand drawn placemats and anything that makes any meal time a time of joy and connection. he funny thing about being mindful is that we become very aware of how we truly feel. We may feel unpleasant feelings initially. At the commencement of our journey of enlightenment towards wholeness, the more ‘in our body’ and grounded we are, the less joy we may feel. This phenomenon is based on the fact that we have emotional baggage and other unresolved traumas or life contracts we have yet to unravel. When we allow ourselves to be more grounded through exercise, meditation and mind-full activities, we may get an unpleasant shock at first. We may want to run, as it all feels too much. One of my youngest Lightworker Practitioner students who is only 19 told me how she felt more aware of her fear now that she was more in her body. For her, becoming aware of the fear that her body was carrying was

enlightening. Once she actually felt the fear that had been there all along, she was able to do something about it. This brought a feeling of joy and relief. True empowerment no less. So with all the pain, fear and unresolved emotions going on in our very human abode, how do we reconcile it with joy? My answer to that is simple. The more we connect with the divine light in us, the more we will feel joy. The more we are connected, the more we see the baggage and emotional residue as temporal. We don’t see it as our infinite destiny! We are able to step back, take a breath and go ‘aahh’. We breathe out, see the bigger picture and we literally have those enlightened ‘aha’ moments. Joy is a bi-product of our connection to what is real, true and infinite. True joy that is! False joy seeking lights up the pleasure centre in

our brain but this can also be a coverup for deep voids within. Therein lies the food addiction trap. The essence of true joy is connecting with our Higher Self and the Everyday Lightworker in us all. Once we discover and practise our connection with the divine, we are able to see the world through a new enlightened and nourishing lens. We have chosen every experience to learn every lesson we’ve learnt. We are who we are from every moment in time we have lived. Our consciousness, freedom and light grows day by day, no matter what our present situation looks like. This brings with it a smile and a reassurance that all is indeed always well. e live in a world of constant challenges and daily setbacks. Life throws up no shortage of difficulty and pain, and there is no way to escape. I think this is as true for you as it is for me. I think it has always been this way. Going back even a few hundred years, life for the early settlers in Australia was very tough. Tougher than I’ll ever know. Today we live arguably much more fortunate lives. And yet I don’t know that psychologically, we are any better off. In certain respects, maintaining a continuity of emotional wellbeing may be harder now than ever before. Think about the utter complexity of life now since the advent of smart phones, social media and the milieu of modern living. Nothing in the hundreds of thousands of years of homeo sapien evolution has prepared our central nervous systems to cope with the flow of information-technology which our brain’s are now being called upon to

handle as part of our basic lives. Whilst technology and complexity continues to increase demands on us at an accelerating rate, our relationships are in certain respects more fractured than ever before. This places a very high level of demand on us. Fortunately awareness about psychological distress is improving – and experiencing mental ill-health is becoming increasingly less stigmatised. Nonetheless, there are very significant gaps regarding the strains of modern living and the resources we have to cope with it. This provides a compelling rationale for self compassion. In my work as a psychologist, I am often struck and saddened by just how poorly our culture does self-compassion. Each of us have parts in our lives, which when activated by a thought, memory, or life event, taps us into those places inside where we experience pain. When experiencing my pain, I find the following helps:

1. Make my breathing conscious. I start with 3 or 4 deep, long and slow breaths. Deep, long and slow. The belly should expand as you do this. 2. Identify the emotional feeling and name it (fear, nervousness, sadness, irritation, anger, frustration and so on). Name it and Tame it. 3. Give it a space. It is already here: Might as well feel it! 4. Remind yourself that this is a temporary mental event – which will peak and pass soon enough. For now the challenge is to just ride it out with a sense of inner kindness, space and compassion. 5. Seek professional help if you feel like your pain is too much for you to handle by yourself. How to be more like a




ave you ever seen what toddlers do when life bumps up against them unexpectedly? They might have just fallen over on their padded bottoms or experienced some other small event that didn’t entirely delight them. They haven’t hurt themselves, they’ve just been given a bit of a surprise. What happens next is very interesting – and every parent, grandparent, aunty or uncle, or anyone who’s had anything to do with toddlers will recognise this – they don’t do anything. Just for a second they pause. It’s as if their minds are doing a little damage report – “What just happened? Am I hurt? Is it bad? Should I cry? Should I scream the house down?” And what we do next can make all the difference. If we react, run to them, start fussing over them then you can guarantee that yes, they will start crying and yes they will probably scream the house down. But if we don’t react, if we stay calm they will almost always pick themselves up and within moments be

exploring and laughing again. We can learn a lot from toddlers. What happens when life bumps up against us? Something we want hasn’t happened. Something we didn’t want has happened. A friend lets us down. Our boss berates us. Someone we don’t even know is rude to us. We get cut off in traffic. We have to wait way too long in a queue. We don’t win the prize, the girl, the accolades, the contract. What do we do? We react. We defend, justify, complain. We go on the attack. We try to make the other person feel as bad as we do. We plot our revenge. Or we pretend to shrug it off while inside we’re seething in anger and resentment. And so here we are. Something bad has happened. We’ve reacted. And now we feel even worse. We are that toddler screaming and crying. We are not having fun. We are not free to explore. We’ve turned that little bump into a major catastrophe. So what’s the alternative? We can pause – like that toddler. There

is a small space between experiencing something in our lives and reacting to it. For most of us that space hardly exists. Something happens to us and we instantly go into reaction. Once there we are left with no choice. But if we pause, if we give ourselves that space, we have choice and that is a powerful thing. We come out of the habit pattern of our minds, the endless treadmill of cause and effect, and get enough space to look around and go “What do I really want to choose here?”. Why Organic Cotton? with Amanda Rootsey


f you are reading this magazine, then it’s pretty likely that you are careful with the type of foods that you eat and monitor the toxins in your cleaning products around the home. With that in mind, it’s just as important to be aware of the chemicals that can be in your clothing. After all, the skin is the largest organ on the body! Conventional cotton consumes approximately 25% of the world’s insecticides and more than 10% of the world’s pesticides. That’s a lot of chemicals! These are often sprayed on to the cotton plants using aerial sprays, which means that there is a likelihood of the chemicals also drifting in to other areas, affecting the environment, waterways, animals and humans living nearby. The Environmental Protection Agency considers seven of the top 15 pesticides used on cotton in 2000 in the United States as “possible,”

“likely,” “probable,” or “known” human carcinogens. So what? Cotton is such a huge part of our existence, not just our wardrobe. You can find it in the thirsty towel that dries you after a morning shower, your personal care products such as tampons, in the soft sheets you sleep in at night, in the absorbent diaper that keeps your baby comfortable and of course in your favourite t-shirt. These chemicals can still be present in these products, long after you purchase them. What is organic cotton? Organic cotton is grown without the use of pesticides, insecticides or toxic fertilisers. For this reason, more effort needs to be put in to replenishing and maintaining soil fertility and building biologically diverse agriculture. How does a brand become certified? In order to gain certification, thirdparty organisations must assess and approve the entire process. According to Australian Certified Organic (ACO), “A cotton operation has to have


been managed in accordance with the organic standards (no prohibited chemicals used) for more than 3 years.” Spinning, yarning, dyeing and garmenting must also be certified organic if the final product is to adorn the ‘certified organic’ label. Because it can be quite a challenging process to achieve organic certification, you might see a product claiming to be “made with organic cotton,” rather than certified organic. Unfortunately some companies will make this claim without any indication that it’s actually true. So the ACO have established a verification program called “made with certified organic fibre” so you can look out for this when shopping for organic cotton fashion as well. oney has been used as an ancient remedy for centuries with scientific studies confirming its medicinal benefits in recent times. eterinary work is something Dr Kaori Kanemitsu has been passionate about for many years. It was almost 13 years ago when she came to Australia from Japan to follow her dreams. And after some struggle with studying language and vet science at the same time, she successfully graduated from Veterinary Science at the University of Queensland in 2007. After working at veterinary hospitals, doing emergency work in Toowoomba,

Brisbane and Tewantin, she finally decided to follow her heart to provide a unique business “KK’s Holistic Veterinary Service” on the beautiful Sunshine Coast. Dr Kaori was exposed to Eastern medicine from a young age. Her great-grandmother was a strong influence and was part of why she chose to study Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine (TCVM). Dr Kaori also learned TCVM from a world class practitioner, Dr Huisheng Xie in USA. She is now both a certified Veterinary Herbal Medicine Practitioner and internationally certified Veterinary Acupuncturist and there are only a few in Queensland. She has a strong interest in treating cancer patients with TCVM as there are numerous side effects from radiation/

chemotherapy. “I personally believe that TCVM gives much better quality of life and longer life span to those patients. I have treated many cancer patients with lots of happy smiles with much better/ increased quality of life,” she said. Dr Kaori is dedicated to the field and continues to spread her message with a local and international audience. Last year she gave a presentation at the International TCVM conference in Spain which was very successful and she is attending and presenting another TCVM conference in Taiwan this August. On a local level, Dr Kaori runs a house call vet service called “KK’s Holistic Veterinary Service” and also can be seen on Monday and Tuesday and occasionally Saturday at the Maple Street Vet in Cooroy. Why home services? Dr Kaori said, “Our furry patients are either too stressed coming into a clinic or too fragile to be transferred. Are you stressed, fatigued and unmotivated? Could your digestive system be making you unhappy? Could you solve your happiness puzzle with these missing puzzle pieces? Could it be bacteria? Researchers at McMaster University have supportive evidence that bacteria residing in the gut influence brain chemistry and behaviour. When there was a change in the gut flora of the test subjects increased anxiety and behaviour change was noted. For years these bacterias have been seen to be harmless, but the negative impact of specific strains of bacteria on the brain are documented. Pathogenic bacteria have the potential to cause havoc on your digestive system and indirectly may cause Serotonin to drop. Serotonin is your happy, relaxing neurotransmitter. Not many people are aware that it is predominantly made in the gut. Functional bacteria (the good guys) are often overlooked, they assist in breaking down your food and keeping your gut healthy.

What about heavy metals? Do you have amalgam dental fillings? Have you worked in the mines? Or in close contact with metals such as an electrician using copper wiring? Do you use copper cookware? Or drink from copper pipes? Heavy metals are linked to depression, fatigue, erratic moods, digestive problems and many other neurologic issues. HRT and use of the pill can cause copper to increase – this is because of the high levels of oestrogen, the likely symptoms could be unexplained headaches, PMS, depression and mood swings. Heavy metals should always be tested.

Do I have the condition pyroluria? A very strange word, I know, maybe that is why so many people haven’t heard of it? Pyroluria is a genetically determined metabolic condition. If you have this condition your demand for certain nutrients (particularly B6 and zinc) is high. These two nutrients are essential for neurotransmitter production, such as serotonin and dopamine. Pyrolurics are more likely to suffer with depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, autism, alcoholism, strong fatigue, temper outbursts, IBS, joint pain, memory loss, or low stress tolerance.

What about your nutrient absorption? Most people who come to the clinic eat a fairly good diet, some exceptional! But they still feel unhealthy. Many triggers such as stress, food intolerances, bacterial overgrowth and hormone imbalance may result in poor nutrient absorption, so no matter how clean your diet is you may not be getting the full reward until it is corrected. Clinically there is testing to determine the extent of damage to the gut lining.
