And… kindness is not about being ‘nice’, it’s not about rolling over and being a door mat for everyone to wipe their dirty feet on. Sometimes you have to respond in a situation based on what you perceive the situation requires. If you do this with awareness, then that’s kindness even if

T

hese two words are often used together, however both have a very different meaning. When people complain of symptoms such as headaches, bloating, constipation or mood swings after eating; they are describing food intolerance, rather than food allergy. During an allergic reaction to food, many irritant chemicals (such as histamine) are released into the tissues. The body releases IgE antibodies, which can result in itchy rashes, coughing, wheezing and the more severe allergic symptoms (anaphylaxis). These reactions are due to an allergy, which is an immune system reaction to foods. The more common reaction is a food intolerance, which causes an IgG antibody reaction; this can come on

from a disturbed gut lining also known as leaky gut syndrome. Long-term inflammation due to continued use of food/s that cause this IgG reaction could result in an autoimmune disease. In children we commonly see behavioural problems, many fears, bloating, skin issues, headaches and constipation. In adults we commonly see digestive problems, headaches, eczema, fatigue and insomnia. A food intolerance test is done by taking a small amount of blood from the finger, which is normally done by an alternative health practitioner (it’s not 100% accurate however, but gives a good indication as to what foods should be eliminated for a three-month period while the body heals). Warming Spiced Chai and Coconut Quinoa Porridge topped with Apple and Caramel Sauce!! RECIPE BEN PARSONS

Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Sugar Free, 100% Vegan – Serves 2 Ingredients: PORRIDGE 1 cup quinoa (you can use white, black or red; make sure to soak the quinoa in 3 cups of water the night before) 1 tbsp coconut sugar 1 tbsp cinnamon ¼ cup of raisins, Goji berries or golden berries 2cm grated ginger ½ tsp ground star anise, ground cardamom, ground cloves and ground nutmeg 400ml coconut milk

CARAMEL SAUCE 200g unhulled tahini 150g coconut nectar 100g coconut oil 1 pinch of Himalayan sea salt 2cm fresh vanilla bean or natural stevia vanilla drops Method: PORRIDGE Put all ingredients into a pot and cook on the stove over a medium heat for 10 minutes then simmer on low for another 10 minutes. You should have a beautiful creamy porridge consistency. While the porridge is cooking, grate a large apple, chop up 1-2 bananas and prepare your caramel sauce!!

CARAMEL SAUCE Put all ingredients into a food processor or a blender and blend for a few seconds or you can use a small bowl and a fork and mix it by hand for a few minutes until you have a creamy caramel sauce. Serving suggestions: Fill porridge into bowls and top with banana, apple and a healthy drizzle of caramel sauce. We also love adding a large spoon of probiotic born cultured coconut yoghurt. HIGH OESTROGEN LEVELS Androgens can also convert to oestrogens in the body, which is why women with PCOS may also have high oestrogen levels (sometimes referred to as oestrogen dominance). As with other hormones, oestrogen at high levels tend to cause unwanted signs and symptoms such as mood swings, breast tenderness, weight gain, bloating and headaches. INSULIN RESISTANCE AND EXCESS WEIGHT Insulin resistance occurs when the body produces insulin in response to carbohydrates, but the insulin does not work efficiently. Whilst insulin resistance is often associated with excess weight, it is also seen in patients of normal weight. EXCESS CORTISOL (STRESS!) Again and again, we see stress as a major contributing factor to illness and disease. Cortisol is the main stress hormone produced in the adrenal glands. Women with PCOS are often found to have higher cortisol levels. In many women with menstrual irregularities, when cortisol levels return to normal, so does the menstrual cycle. What can happen with long term stress response is the adrenals start to fatigue and thus strongly evident fatigue may then follow! NATUROPATHIC TREATMENT OF PCOS 1. Hormone Testing – Testing for

Supporting Detoxification Systems – In any condition where there is an over-production of hormones, metabolism and clearance of hormones from the body becomes essential. This will involve supporting the digestive tract and the liver. Winter WARMERS RECIPE NICOLE VAN HATTEM

I

’m a big fan of not being in the kitchen but I’m an even bigger fan of being healthy, energetic and having some control over the quality of food that I put into my body. So my recipes tend to be more on the raw food side and contain lots of ingredients that you will find in the average family fridge and freezer, for convenience and speed. That includes packaged foods such as pre-chopped salads, frozen vegetables and bottled sauces and salad dressings. In winter I find it quite a challenge to eat enough raw foods to ensure good gut bacteria and life giving enzyme levels in my meals. When the weather is cold outside, I want to fuel my belly fire with food that will warm me on the inside, like a hearty hot soup or baked, steamed, roasted vegetables. So that’s what I go for. However I add more raw foods like side salads to go along with the cooked foods as they help to digest my cooked food and maintain my energy levels. Then I add in homemade raw dressings and sauces that include raw elements and warming spices such

as ginger, garlic and cayenne. This recipe is one of my winter favourites. It’s great over a raw side salad but even better stirred through a bowl of steaming vegetables or mixed through a stir-fry just before serving. It is a lovely combination that adds a bit of life to a plain vegetable dish and the warming elements of the raw ginger and garlic (optional) also add a little fresh zing to the taste buds. Secret tip: This is great as a smoothie too – yes a smoothie! Take out the olive oil and replace with coconut water. It’s nutritionally delicious and warming! Serve it as little green winter shots. Ingredients: 2 handfuls baby spinach tightly packed 2 Medjool dates (soaked and pitted) 8 tbsp olive oil 1g powdered turmeric 20g chunk of ginger root (peeled and chopped small) 1 clove of peeled fresh garlic (optional) Cayenne or fresh chilli – to taste (optional)

Method: Put all ingredients in the blender and blend until it’s the consistency that you desire. I keep mine a little chunky – it looks more like the consistency of a pesto. You can also add a dash of fresh lemon or lime juice to lift up the flavours. Store in the fridge but use within 3 days. t’s not often you get to sit in the front row of one of your greatest health idols, meet her in person, then a year later find yourself speaking on stage alongside of her, only to be asked a few months later to interview her for a magazine cover story! Many hashtags come to mind: #girlcrush #itsadream and #OMGilovelibby! Dr Libby Weaver is one of those women who oozes intelligence, confidence, and knowledge and when you stand before her, you realise she possesses lashings of healthy sex appeal too. She is the complete package and like the tens of thousands of other girl-crush fans out there, I consider it an absolute honor to be in her company. Being asked to interview Dr Libby has given me humble permission to delve deep into what makes her tick and how she became one of the world’s most respected women’s health advocates and most renowned international speakers and authors. With a hint of a Kiwi accent, I always thought she was born in New Zealand, but this country girl was in fact born in Tamworth, NSW. Although she spends a lot of time in NZ, which is why she is always claimed as one of theirs! Knowing she spent fourteen years at university I asked if she felt it was, ‘the more she learnt the more she realised she didn’t know’? She joked and said it was more a thirst for knowledge and not that she was thick! Her first degree in nutrition and dietetics saw her placed in a countrybased practice dealing with kids who had so much medical attention and conditions such as leukemia and eczema. Much to her surprise, every single patient she dealt with was completely healed through her nutritional advice. Dr Libby said, “It made me wonder why poor nutrition is not thought of as a possible cause for ill health? It lit a fire so big I had to ring my immunology professor and ask him what I should do. He suggested with my curious mind, I should look at completing a PhD in biochemistry.”

With a love of writing, psychology and human behaviour, one of the biggest dilemmas she found herself continually questioning was, ‘why do people do what they do, even though they know what they know?’ I am instantly reminded of one of her talks. Dr Libby has such reverence for the body. She talks about the enormous power of the internal chemistry that takes place. Every second there are billions of chemical reactions within the 50 trillion cells that make up the human body. “You cannot help but be blown away by ‘its’ magnificence,” Dr Libby said. “I really want to help or support people to see their body as a vehicle, their earth suit, and to maintain it and make sure it’s highly functional for their whole life because I think as we live longer, we want that quality of life to still be there.” I questioned Libby on the sad fact that most people, women in particular, do nothing but berate their body. They don’t see its magnificence, they are not kind to it; all they see are faults. Why is this? “One of the best things we can do is advocate for a subject to be taught in school called ‘Practical Psychology’ where children are taught from a young age that our brain creates meanings from every situation that we are a part of. We are wired to pick up on information in the environment that essentially leads us to create a deficiency, or a belief in the deficiency, of who we are and we create a meaning that there is something wrong with us, that we are not okay the way we are. And then we grow up obviously

experiencing every conversation, every thought through that filter and belief that we are not good enough.” How can we be more kind to ourselves, I asked? “Kindness is inherently who we all are. Our perception though, of who we are, can get in the way of the ‘truth’ of who we are. I feel so many women are trying to slog themselves to change the big or little things in their lives that right now are not going to budge. I never want women to think they must put up with their lot. You go girl – you change whatever you want! But I think it’s more about being discerning about what you can and can’t do,” she said. Exhaustion, burnout and struggling with the everyday pressures… how do we get off the stress treadmill? “On a physical level it’s recognising that so much insight comes from stillness. A lot of women still resist stillness because they feel to prove their worth, they have to be busy and then there’s the practical side of it when you have a full-time job, a partner, children, ageing parents… there are so many things to juggle. It’s quite often meeting the needs of other people. And it’s recognising your own needs amongst that, knowing your needs are just as important as theirs,” Dr Libby shared. All very good and well, I hear many women say, but what about the guilt, or when we are snapping at our family, exhausted, and not able to eat well? Dr Libby explained, “First up, it is a behaviour, not actually who you are, because as soon as you think your behaviour is who you are, you can feel it is all just too hard. Learn to see your behaviour, like snapping at the children, as feedback that something needs to change. For instance, you might have had five coffees that day and it’s just way too much caffeine, so that adrenalin has led you to behave that way. If you have eaten badly or hardly at all, is it because you have been running around meeting everyone else’s needs? Maybe you are just ‘hangry’! Sometimes the behaviour we don’t like is due to a physical need of the body. It is getting either too much of something or it’s not getting something it needs.” So I reflected back to Dr Libby all of this is really quite simply around our perceptions (not necessarily truths) and our nutritional needs…

It is very difficult for the body to produce substances that allow you to feel the emotions or express the emotions you want, if you are not giving it the basic substances to drive the biochemical pathways that allow you to experience the joy, compassion, kindness that you want to have more of. We are a pile of physical systems and if you are not feeding your body the nutrients it needs, it just cannot make those substances.

Focus on eating in a nutrient dense way!

Develop soul nourishment. Just let yourself have what you already have. It might be a majestic view, a child’s laughter, a beautiful sky. When you ask someone who is dying what they will miss most, they say the most ordinary things: a partner’s face, the fur of their dog, the smell of a freshly cut lemon or the night sky. You’ve got all that right now. Joy in knowing this gives you an irreplaceable depth of energy.

“Yes. I think the way we feed ourselves is one of the most basic forms of self-care that we can demonstrate to ourselves. A lot of people see food as a pain in the neck or use the phrase, ‘I don’t have time or money to eat well’. But I will challenge them – instead of saying you don’t have time or money why not just say it is not a priority for you right now? Because, that’s the truth of it. We make time for whatever we prioritise. If you want to be better nourished, then you have to priortise it!” said Dr Libby. As the interview came to a close I thought, I have fallen even more in love with this beautiful soul. She is married to the love of her life and business partner Chris. magine every cell in your body thriving and your health and life so abundant and alive. How can you create this for your body? Easy, BE KIND TO YOURSELF! It is best I give an example. Sandy booked a Medical Intuitive session about her skin as she had a red raw rash on her arms, legs and breast area. She had tried all medical products and found that nothing worked. Herbs and supplements worked to a point but there was something missing. She had forgotten one key ‘ingredient’ to her health care to her skin. She had forgotten to be ‘kind and loving’ to herself. First we need to understand the skin. From a medical intuitive perspective skin is about protection, breathing in life, guilt and appearance. Sandy felt quite guilty each time she did anything for herself in a self-loving way and worried about what people thought; in other words she was concerned how she appeared to the world. She suffocated herself with guilt and was so harsh to herself. She felt she needed to protect herself from

anyone hurting her and yet she was hurting herself. These emotions were literally destroying the epidermis (outer layer of skin which provides a waterproof barrier), the dermis (connective tissue, hair follicles and sweat glands) and hypodermis (fat and connective tissue). Each cell of these areas was ‘dying’ and definitely not breathing in a life of love. Sandy needed to learn to be KIND to herself so that she could change the molecular structure of the cells and therefore eradicate the rash. Sandy learned to say kind words to herself and affirmations that were empowering and loving. She gave herself nurture time and ensured that she was deserving of this and there was no guilt associated with it. She would set boundaries with work colleagues. Sandy learned to see the sensual part of herself as a woman and gave herself time to be creative. Within a two-week duration, Sandy reported that her skin was not red or bleeding and she felt so much better. As I scanned her body I noticed that her cells were morphing into a suppler and

here is a widely known quote from the American Gangster Al Capone that says ‘don’t mistake my kindness for weakness. I am kind to everyone but when someone is unkind to me, weak is not what you are going to remember about me’. That is all well and good for the era in which Mr Capone became famous for all the wrong reasons and where revenge in the face of disrespect was common, those days when a man had to defend his honour and protect his ego by doing unto others what had been done to him and worse. Those times have long passed however and a new age is upon us. It’s time to let go of old notions of what is strong and what is weak, it’s time to embrace the positive side of life, to live the Pollyanna life, if you will. In this day and age where humanity is opening its heart chakra and more of us than ever before are tapping into our

empathic super-powers, it’s time to step into the grace and strength that is found in kindness to self and to others. ‘Only a fool mistakes kindness for weakness. There is the heart of a lion within the spirit of a lamb. K

indness is one of the most powerful life-enhancing practices. It strengthens our relationships, reduces stress, anxiety, depression, releases feel-good neurotransmitters like dopamine and oxytocin, and kindness makes us happy. We are often naturally kind toward others, but often rather unkind to ourselves. It’s not that we intend to be unkind to ourselves; but our inner critic has a louder voice than our inner cheerleader, in the name of “selfimprovement”. This can backfire by creating self-defeating beliefs. How many times have you called yourself stupid for making a mistake? Have you told yourself “I’m not good enough”? Have you berated yourself for failing? Have you ever said, “I’m too (ugly, fat, stupid, unlucky, weak, scared, uneducated, clumsy, etc.) to...” OUCH! The inner critic can be loud, and cruel – and worse, every time you repeat unkind things about yourself, you reinforce beliefs that you are no good.

Wouldn’t you agree that this has to stop? Critical self-talk will not inspire you, motivate you or build confidence. But you can train yourself, by the things you repeatedly see and say, to be kind to you; and your outlook, energy, relationships, success and overall wellbeing, will improve. Kindness to self does require intention and action. Here are a few ways to become kinder toward the one person who is with you for your entire life – you: 1. Become aware of your self-talk. How do you talk about yourself, to yourself or to others? Is your inner cheerleader or your inner critic in charge, most of the time? You don’t have to observe every word you say to yourself; just pay attention to how good or bad you feel after you say something. 2. Practise using more encouraging and loving language. Instead of, “that was stupid!” try, “well, that didn’t work so well – let’s see what I can do differently next time”. Look for the

positives and the lessons, and think proactively by exploring different future actions. 3. Don’t compare yourself to others. Take inspiration from someone you admire, but don’t make yourself feel “less than” by obsessing about what they have that you don’t. Instead, focus on being better than you were yesterday! 4. Practise gratitude. Thank yourself often! Thank your body, your mind, your senses, your talents, your creativity, your friendliness, your intuition, your perseverance, your bravery… (etc) – and thank yourself anytime you show yourself kindness, just as you would thank someone else who shows you kindness. Take the time to create kind, loving and self-empowering thought habits and beliefs. Give a stronger voice to your inner cheerleader who will encourage you to do, and be, your very best! mindpt.com

Psoas: PART 2 WORDS GAYLYN AITKEN

I

n my last article on the psoas, we learnt how it behaves more as an organ than a muscle, often referred to as the messenger of our nervous system or the muscle of our soul. Our nervous system responds structurally to danger by drawing energy from our gut brain into our muscles, shifting the weight of our body forward to powerfully propel us out of danger. When a person is locked into sympathetic fear response the central nervous system develops a postural pattern according to this alignment and over time takes its toll on our psoas. These patterns of movement define who we are and can be the reason why our body is either responsive to change or stuck in a painful vise. This article can provide you with a start to solving structural misalignment; the major cause of lower back pain, disc prolapse, hip degeneration, torn knee ligaments and foot pain. Our psoas is

the only muscle to connect our legs to our spine, so the health of our hips, knees and feet reflect the responsiveness of our psoas. Our psoas lies in the heart of our belly with the huge network of nerves to our lower body deeply imbedded within it, so touching or palpating our psoas can be physically or emotionally disturbing. It responds like poking a caterpillar; contracting to protect itself. The best way to address our psoas is to rest in a structurally aligned position. Once our nervous system senses alignment the psoas tension can release. Method: Lie on a foam mat with your feet and knees hip width apart. If your neck is tight, place a folded blanket under your head, with your feet flat on the floor. Focus your attention on the physical sensation of your body touching the floor, feeling of weight resting on all

the contact points. Notice if there’s a difference in weight between the left and right side of your body. Let your lips and eyes soften to release tension from your jaw, neck and scalp. Become aware of the rhythm of your breath without judgment, then feel the rhythm of your breath moving your body, rising to your inhale and softening back on your exhale. Let your body surrender its weight into the floor; there’s no need to hold yourself, let your body be supported by the earth and allow yourself to become aware of your inner rhythm and motion. After 20 minutes let your legs and body drop to one side. Lie here for a few breaths then sit up from your side. I was terrified of the camera for most of my life until I discovered ways to break through those fears. Even as a professional director with over 25 years behind the camera, whenever I went in front of the lens I froze. Something happened and I couldn’t move or speak. I hated what I saw of myself. Sound familiar? This fear stopped me for a long time, but then I found a way to break through. I found a cause that I was passionate about. I set off to Thailand on my own to make a documentary about elephant communication and telepathy. I decided to be the voice for an animal that had no voice, and I had no idea how it would play out. I’ll tell you more of that another time, but the upshot was that I found a reason to be on camera and when I came home,

Michael and I developed amazing ways to help people become confident in front of the camera, and the results are often miraculous. Here’s an exercise you can start with: 1. Draw three columns on a piece of paper. 2. In column one write down who you love on camera. 3. In column two write down what traits those people have. e.g. how they look, speak, what they say, their sense of humour. 4. In column three write down what traits you share with those people. 5. Grab your phone and video yourself whilst thinking of those people. Channel the traits you share with them and you’ll notice a difference straight away. P.S. Make sure you have fun with it! E

volution has gifted us with an amazing left prefrontal cortex (front of the brain) which gives us the ability to recognise problems, analyse, evaluate, locate solutions and answers, and which prompts survival type responses. In sitting with others, and hearing their life difficulties, I sense that we humans are overusing this evolutionary facet of ourselves. I suggest that this part of our brain, which has developed to keep us alive, is in over-drive and is seeking problems; it has become our default mode and even though so very helpful to our survival, when overused it can become an unkindness towards ourselves. Why is this? This internal process, of the problem-solving default mode, has in effect turned in on itself; this mode now views the ‘self’ as a problem to be fixed. This mindset can result in a range of internal experiences such

as a dominant view of ourselves as inherently problematic, incomplete or lacking somehow, an abundance of critical and evaluative thoughts, a regular ‘drive’ to find solutions and to fix ‘self’, a fast and pressured pace of mental processes (thoughts), an over-activating of the flight and fight mode, and an overall harsh and unkind approach to ourselves. This is a mental habit that is often so ingrained for many of us that it doesn’t reach our awareness that this is what is happening, or we think it’s normal somehow. We may even, perhaps, value it. Of course, there is value in the sophistication of our prefrontal cortex’s workings, but we really don’t need to be using this problem solving process all the time, and not toward ourselves. To be more kind to self, and to naturally access the flow of greater kindness to others, we need to reduce the ‘defaultness’ of this problem-solving mode.

Listen out for it when it’s happening. Not by turning towards ourselves as problems to be fixed. Reduce the harshness, the pressured and rigid way we relate to ourselves. Find a gentler, kinder tone of voice to relate to yourself inside the mind. Tell your brilliant mind that “problem-solving mode is currently not required, thank you”. Repeat the mantra: “I am not a problem to be fixed, but rather a glorious artwork always in process”. Speak to yourself as you would speak to your daughter or a favourite friend. Ask yourself: “Is this a kind way to approach myself?” Remember, though, to try not to further criticise your prefrontal cortex, for it is only doing the job it has evolved to do. Just demote it and reduce its hours. We have a great capacity for empathy, kindness and compassion for others, which means we can also offer this to ourselves. reconnectionscounselling.com

major reason for depression, anxiety and distress is our sense of isolation. Even when we are in a relationship or are surrounded by people, we can feel disconnected from everyone and everything around us. We feel like we are alone; that “no-one seems there to help me; I have to deal with this all by myself”. No wonder 1 in 5 people in Australia suffer from a form of mental illness each and every year. It’s tricky. Feeling (dis)connected starts in our brain. It is an interpretation we form about events around us, and this interpretation, in turn, makes us feel (dis)connected. When we feel lack of connection to others, it also lessens our ability to be compassionate. Why would we care about other people’s feelings or suffering, if – in our eyes – it seems they don’t care too much about ours either? It is a nasty piece of reasoning, one we see more and more in our society: we seem to care less and less about other

people’s fate. Ultimately we end up in a vicious cycle of “I don’t care about you as you don’t care about me”. And this is all because of a warped interpretation in our OWN brain! Luckily, in our own brain lies the solution, also. We can train ourselves to feel compassion. In fact, it is the fourth stage in the Mindfulness integrated Cognitive Behaviour Therapy journey! Mindfulness training and compassion training can totally transform our attitude towards ourselves and others. This will have a “happy side effect”: we will also start to feel more connected. To ourselves; to other people; to all living beings; to the universe as a whole. Wouldn’t it be great if we feel connected to ourselves and to everything and everyone else? We would feel purposeful, and life would be meaningful. We would know that, no matter how deep and dark life sometimes seems, there are always

people and other beings or things we can rely on to help us, because we are connected to them. We would have much less suffering and misery in our lives. We would feel less isolated. We would be more compassionate towards our own suffering, and towards the suffering of others. We would help more, and need less help ourselves. Charles Darwin recognised that compassion plays a very important role in successful societies. Acts of compassion majorly increase our chances of survival, he noted. It is a learned skill. The Dalai Lama said: “Love and compassion are necessities; not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive”. Compassion can be learned; quite quickly, actually, as our brain is prewired for it. are all connected to and through. Do you really understand the power of this? What each of us does, effects everything else. Kindness is an outward action which displays the qualities of being friendly, generous and considerate; something that is encouraged for us to do from a young age as we learn to be a part of this world. When we action kindness towards self, it is a measure of who we are, what we believe and what we deserve. However more often than not, we listen to the inner critic; the voice of self-judgement which is far louder than the gentle voice of kindness. There is no real kindness in that conversation. Often the thoughts from the inner critic are the first steps towards self-abuse. Yes, harsh I know, but think about it. People don’t self-harm, have eating disorders or take to obsessive or addictive behaviours unless there is some inner critic or inner judgement out of control that is leading them there. Every negative thought we direct to ourselves, every limitation we believe that stops us from evolving, every lie we have been told, or tell ourselves is an act of self-abuse. These acts keep us in hiding, keep us playing small and insignificant, keep us living the lie of being less than, not worthy, not deserving and the biggest one, unlovable. Where is the kindness towards

Supporting and feeding the beliefs running the inner critic, are the flourishing industries of fashion, beauty, media, even ‘Self Help’ which offers bench marks that are hard to achieve for most people. Continually showing us that we need to be fixed! Then the inner critic takes another knock, at being less

than, not good enough, being wrong, not committed enough, taking each person further from being in a state of inner kindness. Over the last few years the mindset of ‘random acts of kindness’ and how that can make us feel has taken on an energy force of change. Great to offer, but again I ask the question, if you are giving and living kindness towards self, then what you offer the world whether random or purposeful, is aligning from the truth of you, not from something you have to achieve or actively do. hrough life’s many challenges, those yet to be gifts in waiting, what I have found to be the kindest acts from friends, family and complete strangers, is their allowance for me to be me. To walk by my side, supporting, guiding, counselling, but always allowing me to do what I thought was the best for me. Was it the best? Who knows? The truest kindness you can ever show anyone is the possibility to be who they truly are in that moment, because anything else is the greatest unkindness that you can be. Who knows what’s right for you more than you? We grow in life by experience, so to deny anyone of the experience they choose, is unjust, and possibly life threatening. My great-uncle died at the age of 6, because he pulled a pot of boiling oil off a stove onto himself. Did he do this because

Spend less time on digital devices and more time opening your eyes to the beauty of your surro unds. Take notice and start practising gratitude for all the little things that fill your body, mind and bein g with joy.

MINDFUL CYCLING and the road to your

best health

L

ife is an amazing journey with many ups and downs. As an endurance athlete and wellness focused health practitioner, I always try to bring mindfulness and gratitude into my work, my training and racing. I constantly look for reminders about how best to live my life to achieve my goals, and help others to do the same. Earlier this week I was struggling to ride my bike up Montville, a steady 6km climb in the beautiful hinterland of the Sunshine Coast. I found myself wishing it were easier, pleading with my legs to find more strength, more power. I felt frustrated that the other cyclists seemed to be climbing easier than I. It’s very common that our default when things get difficult is to focus on the negative, to beat ourselves up and wish things were different, that we were somehow better than we currently are. I took a moment, backed off the intensity and absorbed the beautiful

mountainous surroundings. I made a conscious effort to give gratitude for this very moment and for what my body was allowing me to achieve. It seems easy to compare ourselves with others, to compare ourselves with an idealised version of the person we think we should be. But what my sport constantly reminds me is the power and sense of calm that can come from celebrating who and where we are in any given moment. As I continued my climb up Montville, I reminded myself that it is often the struggle that makes us stronger, it is the consistent and deliberate act of showing up, of giving our all that allows us to summit life’s mountains. Upon reaching the summits we have an opportunity, through mindfulness to gain a new perspective, to acknowledge the strength gained, to cultivate self-belief and gratefully recognise the road we have travelled,

preparing us a little more for the inevitable next mountain to climb. The path to regaining health, to self realisation is rarely linear. There are bumps in the road, there are twists and turns, difficult climbs, fast descents, and there are most certainly summits. I invite us all to embrace the struggles, to constantly show up with presence of mind and an attitude of gratitude. For all of it contributes to the totality of our lives and it is in these moments where we often uncover our greatest lessons and they can be the key to experiencing our best self. I

have always been interested in healing and alternative therapies so I studied Reiki and became a Reiki Master many years ago while I owned my own restaurant and lounge bar in Airlie Beach. I decided to study and be a Reconnective Healer® because when I lived in Byron Bay back in 2011, I was looking through the beautiful Crystal Castle’s book shop and the book ‘The Reconnection’ by Dr Eric Pearl jumped off the shelf in front of me. I was very intrigued and bought the book straight away which I found so interesting! I read regularly and had weekly visits (while my two-year-old son was at day care) to the beautiful Crystal Castle. Almost a year later I had a healing crisis of my own from a malignant melanoma. I decided to have some Reconnective Healing® sessions and become ‘Reconnected’ with The Reconnection™ – a lifechanging and powerful two-part

process to re-connect original 12-strand DNA. During my Reconnective Healing® course in Melbourne in 2012, I was guided through insight to continue healing myself and to help heal others. I continued to heal myself through various alternative ways which proved to be successful for me. Even a remote healing from ‘John of God’ was an incredible and profound experience. I was also given guidance through the spiritual surgery and from the casa spirit doctors that I could heal myself (as I know what to do and to help others also). I then decided to study Hypnosis which I found incredibly fascinating and then Regression Therapy in Melbourne with the amazing and wonderful team from the PLRA (Past Life Regression Academy) in England. I thoroughly enjoyed this course and successfully received my diploma. I have since been interested in counselling and am currently completing studies in this field.

THE POSTURE OF WORDS GREG BEERLING

W

e’ve all heard it before, sit up straight! Shoulders back! Head up! Chin back! And stop slouching! We are all meant to know better these days; it’s the age of convenience, efficiency and information. So why do many of us fail to follow the insight contained within, or just not ask at all? It may be because it’s far too technical or feel like it’s been served like a sermon? Most likely it is because it holds no value to us and the feeling we are immortal pervades. It’s not until you treat it day-in, dayout, will you see how much this new age of information has brought physical ruin to many an office worker, meddling with their productivity. A few of you will be knowledgeable about the parts and processes of the human body but many of you will not. So to convey greater meaning to you, I will be telling the story of fresh start-up candidate Jack… Jack is a young enthusiastic social entrepreneur, ploughing ahead,

productivity: Part 1 although he hadn’t taken into account a secret overdraft he never knew he signed up for. Jack had a burning desire to change the world, and he had an idea; it was a good idea. He was driven, as any good entrepreneur would, by the passion of the chase, to create a better world. He would spend countless hours, staring into the screen of his laptop, working wherever he could: at his favourite café; on the couch and at his vibrant co-working space. Here he would sit for hours not moving, engrossed in pouring out his ideas into reality. All the while in the background, Jack’s physical management system was struck by some chronic cash flow shortages. Jack had been drawing down on his physical overdraft for quite some time. Jack kept arranging for the ‘Trapezius Union’, to leverage their capital reserves, in an endeavour to keep heading forward in the direction Jack was keen to prolong. But reserves were getting low and strain on confidence was starting to show.

Different?

Trapezius Union’s morale had been taking a beating for a while and it would vent its splenius cervicis at times. This dissention would scalene his neck and create a roaring headache. During these periods Jack would outsource team training to public relations firm ‘Paris Ceetamol’, to keep him from being distracted by the constant attention he needed to give those “complainers”, and most times it worked. Morale went back to normal and Jack could power on again. But oh! How Jack was naive to the physical IR required to keep his body in functional order. Do as I say, not as I do.’ Have you heard this statement? Children learn by watching their peers and authority figures. When it comes to teaching children to be kind to themselves and others – YOU need to be kind to yourself first. That way they will have a fabulous role model. This lifestyle can easily be integrated in to everyday life and children will love to learn if you make it fun. What things do you say to yourself or say about yourself to others? Is it loving, kind, empowering? Do you berate yourself or do you compliment and state, ‘Gee I am great at making chocolate cake.’? By saying positive comments to yourself, children learn that it is OK for them to say fabulous things about themselves.

How do you treat yourself? Do you allow yourself time alone, nurture you with a bubble bath, say no when you mean ‘no’? Although children may not understand this to be self-love, care and kindness at first, over time they will grow in to these concepts so that they can mimic the behaviours and create their own world of being kind to themselves. Many parents will request their children to be kind to each other and their siblings. That seems like an easy request however if the parents are not being loving and kind to their own family, friends or partners, this will confuse the children as they will get mixed messages as to what kindness is. So ensure to check yourself of what you are saying and doing in front of children. Television and computer games teach children and we forget this especially if it is a ‘killing and destruct’ game or show. For young children it is imperative that parents and carers screen what these gullible and innocent children watch as they learn quickly about relationships

and interaction from these mediums and can NOT discern what is real and what is acting. Consequently, children can mistakenly think kindness is hurting people. This also applies to YouTube and social media. Easy techniques to teach children kindness are to allow them to praise themselves, allow them to share how they feel, give them the opportunity to ‘fall and get up’ as they will see their own potential and then learn to be kind to themselves, understanding that life is a gymnasium for the soul. Children need time to be alone, in nature, exercise, and be creative to explore themselves and their gifts. This act of kindness fills their souls and allows them to be the best of themselves. So remember you are the example of what is possible to your child. So be kind to yourself! inter is a time when our pets (and ourselves) need to cuddle up and stay nice and warm. Being kind to yourself means looking after your basic needs; getting plenty of rest, eating well and regularly, avoiding toxins, and taking supplements for particular conditions. Arthritic joints are generally worse with cold weather, sometimes even worse with cold and humidity together. Being kind to your pets is similar, but recognising their needs may require the help of a qualified veterinary surgeon, radiographs (x-rays) and remedial therapies. Animal Wellness runs massage courses for the clients and to train vets, vet assistants and nurses which help the patient benefit to increase range of motion. In most animals, arthritis shows up as a combination of pain and weakness. A cat may not want to jump up on a windowsill, couch or bed anymore. HYDROTHERAPY Hydrotherapy is a great option especially in dogs who have muscle atrophy. Unfortunately it cannot be done with cats. Hydrotherapy helps to rebuild muscles, increase range of motion and work out sore and sensitive areas of the body without the impact on the body of exercise on land. Walking in waist deep water is also helpful, and swimming in warm ocean water, which is more buoyant, is better than cold non-salty water. Ensure that all are very happy to proceed, and that there is no panic or tenseness involved, as this is not conducive for healing. HERBS I have worked with Chinese herbs with many of these arthritic conditions. The combination of acupuncture and herbs usually helps with pain and movement and helps animals’ maintenance process between treatments. Some animals do not do well on Chinese herbs, occasionally some diarrhoea from the licorice coating may occur, so it is important to work with us, as your herbal practitioner to find the right combination to help your particular animals. TCM states that fresh ginger (Sheng Jiang) works the ‘exterior’ conditions… disperses cold... warms the ‘Middle Burner’ and can be used in formulas and supplements (in powdered form) or you can cook the dog food with it; fresh or with powder to decrease problems with digestion, gas, and I use it in my recipes for IBD (irritable bowel disorder). Other herbs and food/nutrition products for inflammation involved with arthritic pain include: Boswelia (Frankincense) Devil’s claw, Corydalis for pain, celery for fluid retention around joints (great in stews), Cat’s claw, and adding turmeric to stews is a great anti-inflammatory.

ESSENTIAL OILS We have found these most useful, and make up a “raindrop kit” including Copaiba and Helichrysum: all wonderful oils to be applied regularly. Drop in and mention this article for our special blend. FISH OIL/OMEGA OILS The Omega 3 fatty acids in fish and cod liver oil actually helps decrease arthritic inflammation in dogs. Adding a little fish oil to the diet can help many animals. GLUCOSAMINE/MSM/CHONDROITIN These supplements help to decrease inflammation and rebuild damaged cartilage. They are often sold in combination. The nice thing about these supplements is that they have few side effects and are very safe. Some animals have a wonderful response to them and some have almost no response. It usually takes a month to six weeks to see if your animal will have a positive response. GAG Adequan/Zydaxx/Cartrophen injections can also be given to increase the joint fluid and lubricate the joints.

It is also a lot easier to give to cats who are hard to medicate daily. After the initial series of injections (one injection every 5-7 days, dose dependent on body weight) it usually only needs to be given once a month, and in many cases only 3 monthly or at the onset of winter. A warm coat, a bed with medical magnets (see Dick Wick’s website for these or get us to order some in for you) and regular massages all help. Horse wisdom for everyday life WORDS ALANE MILLIONS

W

hat is meant by horse wisdom?? Horses have evolved with unique senses to help them survive in the wild, these senses have not been evolved out of them despite their domestication. They have the ability to know what mood we are in, what our intent is and if we are scared or feeling comfortable. They can sense if our heart rate goes up or if we are holding our breath. When we hold our breath it can be interpreted that we are stalking them, much like a lion does to a zebra. The lion holds its breath and stops movement in a stealth action, which makes detecting them difficult. The zebra appears to have an intuitive intelligence that keeps them safe. When we approach a horse, it is automatically assessing if we are acting like a predator or a friend communicating with them in a way they understand. We must go into the horse’s world and communicate with them via their methods, rather than expecting the horse to come into our world. When we do that, a bridge of trust, respect

and empathy is quickly assembled and we have a common foundation of understanding in which to grow our relationship. This foundation building is a simple process however has astonishing and wondrous results and can be used with other species. Horses teach us through their natural way of being, to be conscious of our breath which in turn activates our rational thinking brain. Once this is activated it allows our heart and mind to work in a harmonious and coherent flow. From this place of elevation, one becomes aware of core heart feelings of compassion, appreciation and elevates health and wellbeing. The teacher horse shows us how to be responsible for our own energy, thoughts and emotions. Horses want to naturally “feel good”, to them this is the space they feel no resistance. One can imagine if we are feeling angry, frustrated or annoyed before we go into the paddock with the horse, they can feel that, and naturally not want to be in that energy. Something within us needs to change so the horse feels no threat or resistance. If we force the horse to be

with us when we are in this state, the ensuing relationship may not go to plan and when you are in a relationship with a large, intuitive animal we want it to go well. Learning how to handle our own stressful situations by being more “horse like” is horse wisdom.
