Sue Joseph’s thoughts for the Month! I have had the pleasure of working mainly with men most of my life. I say that, as I can only describe my adventure each day in my work with males, as a gift. The communication between males and females is very different but once you understand, that it is just that, life within your team, becomes a whole lot easier.

2.indd 1

Working together as a couple or just working together as a whole team, seems to be no different, than being in a relationship at home. The most important value is to have honest respect and to give truth in each moment. I never give up on the value of being able to fully understand what it

is that makes those around me tick. To drive what makes one’s heart sing also means you can feel the beat of your team and know when the beat is full, consistent and where the next beat is coming. What more could any human possibly wish for in a working team?

follow your bliss! is with his own ventures, he is still able to lend me a hand with the mag when he can and provide moral support. He has also run many businesses in the past and whenever we have worked together there has usually been a real sense of synergy. But is having a relationship (particularly one where you live and work with the person you love) what we should all aspire to? Once again, no right or wrong! Some of the best relationships can be with couples who work in different fields, who are like chalk and cheese, but still share a loving relationship that is about contribution, growth and good will.

’ve had that song stuck in my head while preparing this edition…“You say potato and I say ‘patarto’…” well, let’s not call the whole thing off… just yet!!! Let’s start with embracing our differences…

Who’s on the cover?: How gorgeous are Amanda Rootsey and David Rafter? It was a real joy to meet them and have them appear on our cover this month with all their style and grace.

This month we’ve included a variety of couples who not only work together; they live together and somehow survive!!! So what does it take to be a dynamo at work and at home? Well, many of the couples mentioned the importance of communication and creating separate roles so each person can shine and do what they love (then the toes are safe from being stepped on). I feel fortunate that as busy as my partner

Reflexology: What can it do for me? Relieves Pain – Relaxes – Restores – Revitalises How does Reflexology work? It is based on the principal that all components of the body are reflected in reflexes throughout the body. It is a deeply relaxing pressure therapy, non-invasive and safe. Stress, toxins and illness create blockages inhibiting the flow of energy. These blockages also manifest in the corresponding reflex points in the feet, face and hands. The stimulation of these reflexes assists in clearing these blockages, allowing the flow of energy to be restored. All treatments are tailored to suit the individual’s needs. If your metabolism is slow, digestion sluggish, you are lacking energy, feeling exhausted all the time, suffer from hormonal imbalances and no matter what you do cannot lose weight,

You Need To Clean Your Body On The Inside. Detoxification can simply transform your life. We are all having showers and brushing our teeth daily, but not paying much attention to what’s happening inside of our body. Our organs get dirty just like a filter in a car. The toxins we ingest and inhale daily contribute to chronic inflammation and disease, causing lots of problems like:  Aches and pains  Stiffness of muscles and joints  Headaches  Insomnia

 Anxiety, irritability  Tiredness  Food cravings  Weight gain  Hormonal imbalances

I am sure you’ve heard of many detox supplements and maybe even tried some. But did you get the results you were after? The reason this detox program works is because it cleanses our body on the inside, getting to the root of the problem, giving the body a chance to regenerate. The results are simply phenomenal. Detoxifying your liver, kidneys, lymphatic system, clearing that chronic inflammation will make you feel:  More energetic  Help you lose weight  Balance your hormones  Get rid of aches and pains, joint stiffness  Improve your digestive system, getting rid of that uncomfortable bloating  Help you feel more happy and alive This is what some of the patients who followed this detox program are saying: “I am totally amazed how much energy I suddenly got after just a week on Gosia’s detox program. My bloating is gone, my ankles are not puffy anymore, lost already 2kg without even trying and what’s most amazing, I sleep like a baby!” Debra K, Twin Waters “I’ve been to many doctors and specialists and got only more and more drugs for my irritable bowel. The problem was so bad I had to stop working and felt helpless. Now after seeing Gosia, I’ve changed my diet and religiously take a supplement recommended by her and feel 100% again. If I only came to see her earlier I would spare myself lots of money and suffering.” Russell M, Buderim “If you are thinking of seeing a Naturopath, come and see Gosia! She helped me so much with my allergies, migraines and my digestive problems. I am no longer miserable and tired. Highly recommend it to everyone.” Barbara J, Mooloolaba

One pot chicken curry

OF THE EARTH By Vicki Taylor

alt is one of the oldest spices of all. Artisan salts are pure, natural, hand harvested, unrefined and unindustrialised salts. You may have heard of Pink Himalayan salt and the benefits it has with its 84 trace minerals and natural iodine. The Hawaiian Alaea salt is high in iron, and the Cypress Black Lava salt contains natural charcoal that has detoxification benefits. Industrialised salts on the other hand, (like your good old supermarket table salt or Kosher salt), are not as healthy, as they usually contain anti-caking agents, have had chemicals used in them to remove unwanted minerals and are usually washed to remove residue from industrial handling, so you aren’t actually left with a lot of ‘natural salt’. There are some beautiful infused salts now available; Roasted Garlic, Vintage Merlot, Wild Porcini and Black Truffle, to name a few, so do yourself and your body a favour and always invest in a pure salt!

Serves 4 Ingredients: 500g trimmed chicken thighs or breasts 1 tbsp Bombaywalla or a good curry powder 1 large onion, thinly sliced 40ml (2 tbsp) olive oil 250ml (1 cup) chicken stock 425g can crushed tomatoes 2 cinnamon sticks 4 garlic cloves, crushed 6-8 fresh curry leaves 1½ cups orzo or risoni pasta 1 cup coconut milk

with salt & pepper. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove from oven, add the orzo, coconut milk and stir to combine. Return to the oven, uncovered, for a further 20 minutes by which time most of the liquid will have been absorbed. Give a final stir before serving with Naan and a dollop of yoghurt.

Naan bread and thick Greek yoghurt, to serve Preheat the oven to 180°C. Cut chicken into 2cm pieces and place in a medium baking dish. Scatter curry powder and onion on top & drizzle with the oil. Give everything a good stir and bake for 20 minutes. Remove chicken from the oven. Add stock, tomatoes, cinnamon, garlic and curry leaves and season

Home grown fun in the sun! By Vanessa Finnigan

s I arrived at Cath Manuel’s place in Lake MacDonald just near Cooroy, I knew I was in for a full day and one that would involve no computers, or Facebook on my iPhone… just getting my hands dirty, learning new skills, connecting and soaking up the glorious sunshine! Cath Manuel is a sustainability and organic gardening expert who has designed a series of informative workshops called ‘Soil to Supper’ to help you grow your own produce in the backyard. She has workshops on ‘How to grow your own bananas’, ‘How to grow your own veggie patch’…you name it! I chose the ‘From the Ground Up’

workshop and I’ve gotta say, It’s actually hard to believe that soil can be so interesting! I was amazed to discover that there is soil and then there is SOIL. So with PH kits in hand, a group of us got to experiment and find out the secrets behind Cath’s own lush veggie garden. At times I just wanted to run into Cath’s garden and lose myself discovering all the yummy goodies; taking in the aroma of the lemon basil, sampling some leaves from the choc peppermint bush and marvelling at the fruit trees. I also had my eye on the coffee bean tree (Cath explained her husband harvests and creates the most amazing and fresh organic coffee from these beans) okay FOCUS… I was in fact there to learn skills about how to create my OWN veggie backyard heaven… After Cath gave us the theory, it was time to get out in the garden and create a ‘no dig veggie patch’ (yup no shovels and so no back aches). We learnt about the ingredients and nutrients required that were layered and watered in to the trays and in a few hours we worked as a team to create two ready to go veggie boxes/

Vegan Lasagna White Sauce 3 tablespoons vegan butter (Nuttlex) 1 /3 cup plain flour 2 cups soy milk

Ingredients: 2 tablespoons olive oil 1½ cups chopped onion 1 capsicum 10 mushrooms 3 teaspoons minced garlic 3 cans stewed tomatoes 1 /3 cup tomato paste ½ cup chopped fresh basil ½ cup chopped parsley 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 package lasagna sheets (Orgran) 2 cups TVP (Textured Vegetable Protein)

Method: Make the sauce: In a large, heavy saucepan, over medium heat, heat the olive oil. Place the onions in the saucepan and saute them until they are soft, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic; cook 5 minutes more. Place the tomatoes, tomato paste, basil and parsley in the saucepan. Stir well, turn the heat to low and let the sauce simmer covered for 1 hour. Add the salt and pepper. While the sauce is cooking bring a large kettle of salted water to a boil. Boil the lasagna noodles for 9 minutes, then drain and rinse well. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Place the TVP in a large bowl, add hot water and allow to site for 5

minutes. In a fry pan, saute the capsicum first, then add mushrooms and TVP. Add the garlic, basil and parsley. Add the salt and pepper. Turn off heat, and allow to sit. White Sauce: In a bowl, add the butter and the flour. Turn on hit and with a whisk, begin to stir over a hot heat. The butter and flour will combine to form a solid ball. Take of heat, add the soy milk, replace on heat and mix well. The sauce texture is to be pretty thick. Assemble the lasagna: Spread 1 cup of the tomato sauce in the bottom of a 9 x 13 inch casserole pan. Arrange a single layer of lasagna sheets, sprinkle one-third of the TVP mixture over the sheets. Add a layer white sauce Repeat until you finish off with a layer of white sauce, add some Vegan cheese on top – and you are ready to bake baby!

Q& A

A Foodie couple working together!

athy and Peter Barry are the owners of the very popular, Bliss Gourmet Market on the Sunshine Coast. The Barry’s are well known in the food industry and a passion for food runs in the family (their daughter Bec manages Bliss Gourmet and their two sons Kris and Josh own and operate their own well known café and organic shop in Noosaville called ‘Organika’). This month we spoke to Kathy and Peter about how they manage to be together as a couple in the hectic food industry. Q: What has your journey been like as a couple who has a working partnership? A: We have been a couple for 40 years and have worked together full-time over the last seven years. When you are working with each other 24/7 so it can become all-consuming with nothing else to talk about but you also bounce things off each other and you know what each other is thinking. Q: Have you both always worked in the food industry? A: No, before we started the shop I was a hairdresser and Peter worked as a

Teahouse now open

water hydrologist in the water resources commission in NSW. Q: When did you realise you shared a passion for food? A: It was just over thirteen years ago when we bought the shop which started out as a fruit and vegetable shop and then we realised we wanted to put a lot of other gourmet food items in the store and also have a café attached. Q: How do you complement each other? A: We work well together and Peter does things like order all the fruit and veggies which I would never dream of doing and I do the baking/cooking for the café which Peter wouldn’t be

interested in doing. Q: What advice would you have to couples who are thinking of starting a business together? A: I would say make sure you were very good friends right from the beginning as well as being husband and wife, because it is demanding and hard work. Also it’s a good idea to have some separate interests outside of work. For example Peter likes going out on motorbike rides and I like going to the theatre, so it’s nice to have this time out for yourself doing something you love. L O V E is all you need!

By Vanessa Finnigan B

avid Rafter and Amanda Rootsey are a young couple on a mission! They are the founders of the local business, ‘Vegan Era’ and are committed to sharing their message of peace and love with the world. Their level of devotion as a couple is truly beautiful and they have much to share about living life with ease, style and grace.

It was a real treat to finally meet Amanda and David (after being Facebook friends for so long) at their new place in Montville. I felt a bit of winter chill in the air but meeting Trudi their gorgeous Staffy at the front door and being gifted with her excitement, as well as Amanda and David’s beautiful energy, seemed to distract me from the cold. The three kindred spirits live a simple life but it’s rich in so many ways… they have peace in their hearts… they have that healthy glow and of course they have each other! And I have to say, they

10.indd 1

really have a way of making minimalism very stylish! Turning back the clock to when they first met eight years ago… David was the marketing manager and Amanda, the duty manager at a bar in Brisbane. They were friends at work for a couple of years before establishing a relationship and taking it to the next level. In so many ways, they were living very different lives back then; drinking and partying and doing all the things young people do. They were also no strangers to being in the spot light due to Amanda’s modelling career, David’s amazing endeavours and his high profile family. Little did they know back then, that they would later embark on a deep and intense journey together; remembering what’s really important in life. When Amanda received her shock diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma two years ago, David stopped work and

looked after her until she recovered. He bought a caravan and the two focussed their energies on resting and healing and making some huge transitions in their life. Amanda used a combination of orthodox medicine and natural healing methods to recover and they both became raw foodists. “David dropped everything and just took care of me and we were a team going through that. David made every day fun for me and positive and that’s also the time when we got Trudi from the Sippy Downs animal rescue shelter. Those are the things that brought us together and made us feel like a team,” said Amanda. “We sold things to be able to have the time off without working. So we’ve learnt to go with the flow. In a blink of an eye your whole life can change,” said David. After Mandy had spent a year recovering, David had time to rest for the

Holistic Bliss, June 2012

5/29/2012 9:20:13 AM

next 6 month, as he had reached a point of collapse. They both agreed that it had felt like they had lived 50 years of their life. Although, they said it was so nice to be in a simple environment and focus on healing and have everything they owned right under their noses. When they had recovered they realised how much they enjoyed living simply, so they continued to embrace this lifestyle rather than being consumed with mortgages or accumulating material possessions. David said, “I was a young guy who had ambitions like any other guy and when you go through what we have been through you see how special each day is and live each day for what it is, you don’t look too far ahead; you’re happy doing what you’re doing each day.” Amanda feels blessed that she and David found a style of meditation they practice every day that helps them find peace. She said because of this practice she didn’t seem to go through the distress and the questioning process (Why is this happening now? Why me?) most people go through when they are diagnosed. So all this wisdom, as well as their research into the benefits of a vegan lifestyle helped them to develop a powerful, heartfelt voice to support the community. Vegan Era is a reflection of this. Their business has become a portal providing support, recipes, eco fashion tips and all the latest vegan news. So how do they find working together? Amanda said, “we are lucky we can work from home and be together.” “Mandy is the ideas girl and she comes up with these big ideas and I’m like yeah okay sounds great and then all of a sudden we are neck deep in things,”

Photos Adori Studios

he said. “Dave is good at getting things in motion,” laughed Amanda. Besides dealing with the ‘nuts and bolts’ of the business David is also very talented with the graphic and web design of their operation. “There are some instances where we don’t work well together but we’ve worked that out, said Amanda with a laugh. “We used to do a stall at the markets but we are not good at that; we both wanted to set it up. It’s much better if we have our own separate things that we work on but still work together”. David said, “We are both perfectionists”, and Amanda commented, “That’s the problem I think.” “But we don’t argue and that makes a difference because we are taking time out each day to find peace within ourselves. Little things don’t matter so much anymore.”

Over the next month, the couple will launch two exciting new projects (The ‘Vegan Card’ and the ‘21 Day Vegan Program’) and they will also continue to develop Vegan Era and find the balance in life.

David said, “We’ve grown together and share the same values.” Amanda looked at David and said, “You just get me!” Ohhhhhhhh, I think I witnessed a romantic ‘Rootsey-Rafter’ moment! They said to me, if they didn’t have a shared mission and shared values, it wouldn’t be possible to do what they do and there wouldn’t be the same level of understanding for spending so much time on the projects and on the computer. Apparently Trudi (the dog with enough energy to power a small community) wishes she could help out on the computer too but she provides fun and excitement to help give them some respite away from the computer! It was an amazing afternoon spent with an inspiring couple who shared their story so openly, accompanied by green tea and ‘medicinal’ dark chocolate. David and Amanda said, “It helps to create peace within yourself and then help the people around you. Wouldn’t it be amazing if the whole world went that way, then there would be no wars and we would all have a peaceful place to live.” Holistic Bliss, June 2012

Keeping the Passion in Work, Rest & Play

By Soraya

By Ken Dowling & Kylie Blackman

y beloved husband Terry and I spend most of our time together in work and play conducting seminars, sharing our music and assisting people to create healthy conscious loving lives. Here are some of our tips to grow in love keep the vibration high while working together. 1. Communication: Really listen to each other so each person feels heard and validated. “Forgive” your partner their smaller side. 2. Smile and Laugh: “Smiling with your Eyes” and laughing releases happy hormones and builds a strong immune system. 3. Dream Together: Create & Manifest your reality consciously by feeling good about your work and life together. 4. Practise Meditation and Develop Mindfulness. Have separate or shared sacred spaces where you can nourish your soul. 5. Delegate: Have separate special areas of expertise within the business where each shines. 6. Conscious Growth: Continue to learn, read, attend seminars and grow together not apart. 7. Quality Time Apart: Value time apart with friends, family or go fishing. It gives perspective. 8. Gratitude: Practise the attitude of gratitude every day! Check your focus is on abundance not lack. 9. Make time for Intimacy: Make love, give each other a massage, hug and hold hands. Have a date. Human touch is so important for keeping connected on all levels. No business allowed!

e are all powerful beings of pure creation beyond our wildest imagination if only we can accept this

possibility. Alone you can achieve so much. The combination of complimentary energies can achieve so much more. Living, loving, creating and working together, inspires greater discipline and respect for each other’s skills and gifts. When couples combine their resources and attributes to create their ideal life, their energy emerges far greater than the power of the individual. Anyone involved in pure creation knows there needs to be shared vision and passion, intention and values and above all the innate desire to create the positive environment to be the best you can be. This has been our life since we first came together. We are two old souls rejoining our journey of self discovery, always loving our time together and enjoying each other’s company and ideas. It is true when you do what you love, it is not work. When two people can walk their evolutionary path together, their masculine and feminine energies merge with spirit. Accept your gift of life, embrace all you have created and live your love fully in all that you are.

Dynamic Couples Who Work Together By Jean Sheehan, Principal – Millennium Education

magine having a perfectly equal partnership in business not just in commitment, effort or finances but in brains. To create and produce a successful business we need two sides of the brain to work together in unison. In this case it is two people who work with their strengths of their brain and utilise it to create a whole brain outcome. Welcome to the functioning of Millennium Education which is the combined equal efforts of myself (right brain) and my husband, Tony (left brain). The right brain is creative, imaginative and all about ideas and excitement. It has the ability to know things from within an innate wisdom and access beyond the physical seen world. The right brain has a trust in all things and can be quite childlike. Very social in nature, the right brain likes to connect and see all the possibilities and take advantage of the opportunities. Nothing is impossible for the right brain person who will quite often multi task. In contrast, the left brain person patiently works with the right brain person by creating all the systems and

action plans for the right brain. This is like the parent to the right brain and will use logic and the need to ‘see it to believe it’ and obtain ‘proof ’. The left brain can get frustrated through the limitations of itself and especially with the right brain who is limitless. It is important for the left brain to focus on one thing and get that achieved really well and then move in an ordered systematic approach that is ‘real’. Put these two brains together and what you have is a hugely successful and dynamic brain, partnership and in our case, relationship and business. Within the Millennium Education Company, we are very blessed, as we have the equal and balanced work load between husband and wife. We are so ‘chalk and cheese’ - every one we meet says so! I am in to healthy living and nature and my husband is in to chemical products and living with I.T. Everything about us is a duality right down to culture; he is Australian and I am Arabic! What we do find with this duality is we are able to create magic and resources that may not have been thought

of before. It also allows each of us to utilise our own gifts which means we then love what we do. As a result of my husband and I being so different, all of our life is dynamic and alive in every aspect and we are growing in so many ways. To find me I will be swimming with sharks or taking clients hot air ballooning and to find my husband send him an email! It takes the integration of all dualities to be self motivated, vibrant and full of life. We are so blessed to be a dynamic duo! Their work together has helped individuals and couples all over the world understand and embrace gender differences in order to bridge the gap. The Pease’s have been a couple for 21 years and worked together for all but six months of that time together. They share six children between them, travel the world together and still manage to keep the magic alive! Although they said for the first few years together their relationship was challenging and their first few books reflected these life experiences with honesty and humour. Further research helped them to make sense of their experiences and share these insights with the world. So this month I was delighted to speak with the very witty and pragmatic

Allan Pease (who had me laughing most of the time) about how couples who work together can actually find a way to stay together… Firstly, Allan and Barbara believe it’s important for couples who work together to have really good boundaries and separate work from home life. He said he and Barbara work in separate offices but bounce things off each other during the day and make decisions about work together. “Couples working together successfully are not common. Because they have difficulties identifying when they are at work and when they are not,” said Allan. So what happens if you have to tell your partner something about how they’ve performed at work or something that has gone wrong?…Well there may be some fireworks but maybe not in the bedroom for a little while! Allan said, “Barb and I have never had a business argument ever, we’ve had plenty of personal ones, but we’ve been able to separate exactly what each of us

do in the business. Her lines in the business are very clear and I don’t cross them or comment on them unless necessary and vice versa.” He believes a lot of couples generally bring work issues or stress into the bedroom and that’s where your sex life can take a dive. He said the bedroom should be reserved for sleeping and making love and suggested having the big discussions before you go to bed and in another room other than the bedroom. Allan suggested 80% of business conversations that are spoken about in the bedroom are not exciting or generative, it’s more about the routine of what happened; who didn’t do what, who didn’t pay their bill…Yeah not exactly aphrodisiac material!! He said the other biggest passion killer for working couples is watching TV in the bedroom. On a positive note he said the advantages of working together are pooling resources and you can amplify the results of what you create compared with what you can achieve as an individual. Allan believes his connection

relationships! with Barbara is very special, “My criteria for looking for a life partner was looking for someone I could work with, share everything together and have a damn good time.” He said in many ways the key to a good relationship is understanding and working with the differences between how men and women communicate and function. Men and women handle stress very differently! “If a guy is stressed out about something he usually stops talking. As men we deal with problems in our head. We go through the issue over and over again and then try and come up with a solution and if anyone wants to talk to us about it we don’t really want to. We’ve got a room in the head called the ‘nothing’ room where we actually think about nothing,” he said. Allan commented that it’s often difficult for women to understand this as they don’t process things in the same way. A woman may also think her man is trying to hide something by not talking. Allan’s advice for women during this time

is, Give him a cup of coffee and go shopping with the ladies! A man benefits from hearing his partner utter these words: “I know whatever it is I have complete faith you’re going to be able to come up with a solution to this.” Allan said most women want to deal with issues in ‘women terms’ ‘to get him to talk about it’ and comfort him. Women deal with their partners the way they deal with their female friends but it sends the message to their partner that he’s incapable, ‘you poor bugger you can’t solve it yourself ’. When a man finally talks about the problem, it’s usually with solutions and men congratulate other men on their solutions. Women like to talk and not just once, sometimes many times. They like to talk and hear themselves talk so they can destress without focussing on solutions. Allan believes as a man, you need to be able to identify ‘is she talking to ask me something or is she talking to de-stress.’ ‘The point of the talk is not the point, it’s the talk itself. Allan said, “When Barbara wants to talk to me about an issue, she

wants me to be present while she’s downloading without giving solutions.” Whether you are working together as a couple or not there is always more room for ‘allowance’ of the differences in the way we each communicate and see the world. Allan said, “We are not better or worse than each other we are just different. If you can deal with those differences with strategies, life will be good.” For a full menu of their best-selling books and info about their tour dates and workshops please visit

Finding the Balance between Routine and Adventure

By Duncan Hogg and Gina Carruthers

e decided early in the piece that we would take a different approach to our relationship. The connection we have is our laboratory for understanding and appreciating life. Our experiences have made it clear to us that to be together with someone you love – and to thrive by virtue of that relationship – is an unmistakable blessing. Alignment appears to us to be the most important quality to sustain a positive, supportive and vibrant relationship. We share common goals with different viewpoints. When we experience conflict together, the willingness to communicate and be aware of a desired outcome seems paramount to successfully navigating a major or a minor issue. And certainly we have had many of these, as most relationships do.

We work together, and have done so for all of our relationship (for 24 years), with but a few exceptions. No matter what goes on, we are on the same team. This is a decision a person can make on behalf of their relationship, irrespective of outcomes. Parenting has been a major focus until recently when we have experienced ‘the empty nest’, and having a background in psychology and manual therapy, – and a real love of understanding behaviour has made our journey an invigorating one. Our challenges came with finding some sort of balance in parenting, juggling the various projects we have been involved in and sustaining an intimate relationship within all of the demands that entails. Patience is a virtue, and the overview

to know what stage (psychologically, spiritually, relationally) we happened to be at any given time really helped to smooth out the bumpy times. Together, we manage a variety of projects. One of our latest projects has been a multi-million dollar Bed & Breakfast in the Noosa hinterland. What a management project this has been. And this has occurred simultaneously with our seminar, consulting and conference business, and another business we are involved in. So there is plenty to respond to, and that necessitates prioritising. What gets on that list is particularly important . When our life becomes too habituated, too routine, we become easily aggravated. So experience tells us that habit and adventure make a beautiful partnership. If we manage that well, everything else is a breeze!

The Atlas supports your head and governs structural alignment. A misaligned Atlas causes restriction of the brain stem, spinal cord, cranial nerves and arteries. This limits our potential for wellbeing and creates tension, restricting the free flow of energy. When the Atlas is installed correctly, the body begins an unwinding process, releasing holding patterns and enabling the body to heal and regenerate.

What Would it Take to Create By Brendon Watt & Simone Milasas

ur relationship did not start out with us working together. In fact we didn’t start out as a relationship. We met. And it was fun to hang out with each other. It was different to be with someone who was kind and generous and a contribution to the other person’s life. Somewhere we had both made a demand that we would not be in a relationship where we ‘cut off ’ parts of ourselves. We would like the other person to be happy and have everything that is possible for them, even if it means losing them. It’s a choice we make every day! Imagine meeting someone, who you immediately think is awesome just the way they are. Then you start thinking that there are parts and pieces of you that they will not like or agree with, so you start cutting all of these pieces and parts out of your life, even though it’s you. Where did you go? They liked you. Not the ‘you’ that is limited. That’s how most relationships work in this reality but that was not what either of us was willing to choose.

Our relationship, (which I would prefer to call a “working possibility”, as it’s always about being in the question of ‘what next’ and if it works today – great, and if it does not work tomorrow then ‘thanks very much, I’m totally grateful for everything that person has been in my life and let’s move on’. That always made way more sense to me than hanging on to something that is not working) has turned into a working relationship as we both work with the same company Access Consciousness. We are both facilitators and we both work with Gary Douglas (founder) and Dr Dain Heer. Brendon does a seminar called Totally Different Dad, and I do seminars on the Joy of Business with Access Consciousness tools. Choice creates awareness. You have to be willing for the other person to have their own awareness, even if it’s through what you would call ‘mistakes’.

One of the first aspects I would recommend in working together is to allow the other person to make their own choices, and only have input when the other person asks questions. Choice creates awareness. You have to be willing for the other person to have their own awareness, even if it’s through what you would call ‘mistakes’. A great question to ask from this is “what’s right about this that I’m not getting?” If you choose and have an awareness then that awareness is yours and no one can take it away. You receive awareness from the choices you make. Choice is creation and relationship is also creation, so then it’s through the choices you allow your partner to make that you create an expansive working relationship or a contractive one. Just choice. What if the purpose of question is awareness, not answer? What if defining a relationship (even your working relationship), is what makes it limited? How many different ways have you defined you that is limiting you and your relationship?

a Conscious Relationship? You have to be willing for the other person to change, to leave and to choose something different or it won’t work. You have to be willing to lose every part of them and for them to be a completely different person tomorrow than they are today. If you are functioning from what else is possible then you are constantly in a state of expansion (Rather than ‘I need to choose the right thing or they need to choose something that is the same as me’). When you are working with your partner (let’s call them your ‘enjoyable other’), you need to function from the five elements of intimacy; honour, trust, allowance, vulnerability and gratitude. And you must also have this with yourself. If you ask every day, ‘where am I not being honouring, trusting, in allowance, being vulnerable and where do I not have gratitude for myself and my enjoyable other?’ then CHANGE it. We ask all the time, ‘how is this creating a future that is going to work for me?’ Did you know that when you go into right or wrong you destroy the

expansion of what is possible? So, when you ask questions, you expand into what else is possible. The future has so much space – no solidity, no contraction. Your choice creates the future. You have to be willing to look at the choice you make today and the future that gets created by that choice. Each choice slowly but surely leads you to the future that you are capable of being today.

What would your relationship and working relationship look like if you were willing to get out of the way? If you were willing to not be in control? Would you have more fun or less fun? Simone Milasas & Brendon Watt

Working together as a Blended Family By Georgia Nichol

stablishing a new relationship and with it, a new family is both exciting and important. It can also be emotionally challenging and confusing. How a couple respond to the challenges of re-partnering and negotiating the meandering path of stepfamily life is at the heart of the matter. Stress and anxiety are inevitable as a family travels through the uncharted territory of redefining itself. In spite of the temptation to become self protective and distant, many couples find themselves deepening their relationship and strengthening their sense of connection to each other in the face of uncertainty and powerful pressure. In my experience a couple’s capacity to tolerate the ambiguity of their situation, maintain realistic expectations and a flexible approach to the seemingly never-ending stream of issues, problems, concerns and frustrations is critical to protecting the primary relationship bond. When this relationship is strong and robust, it

creates the holding space for children to mourn their past family loss and explore and experiment in their new one, in the safety and knowledge that the adults are both self soothing and soothing each other. At times the difficulties seem insurmountable. Taking on the joint roles of parent and step-parent are commonly the most difficult and stressful aspect of step-family life. Accepting new roles and forging new relationships can generate feelings of guilt, remorse and confusion which can become all consuming. Likewise, finding a place for the past relationship and protecting the new relationship from unwanted intrusion from ex-partners can also be difficult. Another source of great anxiety for the couple is dealing with conflicting loyalties. Feeling caught in the middle can create an atmosphere of jealousy and isolation, insecurity and anger. It is vital to nourish and strengthen the new relationship by showing affection and carving out quality time for each

other. Further by demonstrating compassion and understanding for the different and sometimes contrary partner experience whilst maintaining true to self can assist couples to build a strong and enduring bond based on honesty and positive sentiment. Sometimes it is a simple case of accepting some problems as inevitable. In choosing each other comes a willingness and commitment to creating a new family identity. There is more than one way to do the laundry, cook a roast or celebrate a birthday. It is not a matter of one right way or the wrong way but a shared endeavour which welcomes new ideas and encourages improvisation. Step family life offers opportunities for mending past hurts, developing new ways of working together that draw from the diversity of all the backgrounds of its members and the chance to rediscover a sense of belonging in a new, flexible and cooperative family unit. This month well known energy workers Dagmar Guntermann and Glenn Bryant share their thoughts about living and working together and sharing their magic. Thoughts from Dagmar: Connecting to Spirit and passing on the messages to people so they can heal is truly a privilege. Sharing this work with someone that you love is an added bonus. It’s also a blessing that my partner Glenn really understands and knows the real me! He understands how important our work is and we have many shared goals. While we have similar viewpoints, similar likes, dislikes and idiosyncrasies, we also bring our own special gifts to the spiritual nature of the work we do. Whether it is helping people with connecting to their loved ones in Spirit or providing guidance in their day to day lives, we still have to remember even psychics and mediums have to live in the real world. It’s funny (and sometimes a bit unnerving at the same time) when we find ourselves saying, “I was just thinking that”, or, “I was about to say the same thing”. We don’t deliberately go about

reading one another, although we do find that we connect in to each other’s moods and energy in ways that are probably more intensified. I do believe that we were brought together at this time of our lives to connect to other people in a bigger way. When Glenn and I work together on stage, both our energies are amplified. Because of our own special connection, we are able to take work to another level and in many ways we bounce off each other and it’s a great contribution. At the end of the day, once all the clients have gone home, we always find time for each other- including have a laugh together. Thoughts from Glenn: As many people know, the main purpose of mediumship is to provide healing by putting people back in touch with someone who has passed. We also remind people that love is all around us and we are never alone. It may not always appear that way, but when you have

s a naturopath and holistic practitioner, one of the most commonly asked questions I receive is, “How can I lose weight and keep it off ? There are so many different ideas and diets around, it can be quite confusing. In 15 years of practicing, I have seen hundreds of patients losing and gaining weight, going from highly motivated to totally depressed. So what’s the magic answer? How can we socialise, enjoy life, have fun and keep the weight off at the same time? That’s the million dollar question. My absolute belief is that no matter what diet you are on, and what fitness program you follow, if you store toxins inside your body you cannot win the

That’s often what is happening inside our body. The liver is the largest organ in the body- filtering blood and toxins and the metabolism depends on the function of the liver. The better you can eliminate the waste; the faster your metabolic processes can happen. So if you are looking at a way to lose and maintain your weight, you need to help your body detoxify on a daily basis. Our cells are constructed of the foods we are eating. Unprocessed, whole foods are going to build healthy cells. We cannot possibly substitute good, unprocessed food with anything else. However to help our body to clean up, I have discovered a detox supplement, scientifically proven to be the most powerful detoxifier that I have used in 15 years of practicing. It cleanses the liver and other organs; binding to pesticides, viruses, heavy metals, mucous, and gets them out. The results seen are nothing short of amazing.

battle. Detoxification, meaning removing toxins from your liver, digestive system, kidneys, lymph and other elimination organs, is crucial to keep the weight off and return to a feeling of energy and vitality. The body has its own natural mechanism to clean the toxins out as a part of automatic processes that occur. However in our current situation we become surrounded by environmental toxins in foods, water and air. We are bombarded with exposure to chemicals and electromagnetic radiation from a constant digitised and stressful lifestyle. Our organs are working very hard 24/7 removing those unwanted substances and are simply overloaded and struggle to clean up. Try to imagine what would happen if the rubbish truck didn’t come to collect rubbish for a month or even for a few years? How would your house look? Or what if you never cleaned out the drain waste in your kitchen sink and it became blocked and the water struggled to drain away?

The King of the Super foods!

pirulina is the most nutritious, concentrated wholefood known to humankind. It has a rich, vibrant history, and occupies an intriguing biological and ecological niche in the plant kingdom. Spirulina is truly an amazing food, full of nutritional wonders. Imagine a food that can help regulate blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol; a food that can alleviate pain from inflammation and deliver antioxidant activity to ward off life threatening disease; a food that helps and protects the liver and kidneys and removes radiation from the body; a food that improves the immune system, alleviates allergies and has been proven to fight many different viruses; a food that helps your eyes and brain; a food that can actually help you lose weight, increase friendly flora in the intestines and improve digestion. Scientific research shows that Spirulina may help in all of these areas and more. Spirulina’s concentrated nutrition makes it an ideal food supplement for people of all ages and lifestyles. Did you

know it is about a sixty percent complete, highly digestible protein? Spirulina contains every essential amino acid. It contains more beta-carotene than any other whole food; it is the best whole food source of gamma linolenic acid (GLA); it is rich in B vitamins, minerals, trace elements, chlorophyll, and enzymes; and it is abundant in other valuable nutrients about which scientists are learning more each year, such as carotenoids, sulfolipids, glycolipids, phycocyanin, superoxide dismutase, RNA and DNA. Spirulina supplies nutrients that are lacking in most of our diets. It provides athletes with long-lasting energy and reduces recovery time; it nourishes people who have digestion, assimilation, and elimination problems; it satisfies the appetite as it provides essential nutrients to weight watchers; it enables children and others who don’t like vegetables to eat their greens by taking a few tablets; and it helps busy people who don’t have time for regular, balanced meals to nourish themselves. Comparing Spirulina with other

foods shows just how packed cked it is with nutrients. For example, ple, a gramper-gram comparison of Spirulina from Hawaii (which contains tains the highest nutrient levels of any Spirulina) shows how powerfully nutritious it is: • Hawaiian Spirulina has 180% more calcium than whole milk • Hawaiian Spirulina has 5100% more iron than spinach • Hawaiian Spirulina has 3100% more beta carotene than carrots • Hawaiian Spirulina has 670% more protein than tofu • Three grams of Spirulina have more antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity than five servings of fruits and vegetables • Comparing phytonutrient levels, Spirulina is 31 times more potent than blueberries, 60 times more potent than spinach and 700 times more potent than apples A powerhouse of bio-available food nutrients, Spirulina is used every day by millions of people all over the World for a real nutritional boost to help keep them healthy and happy.

Change in motion: Bringing nutrition into medicine

n the weekend of 6 May 2012, over 550 doctors, scientists, academics, nutritionists and allied healthcare professionals attended a landmark event at the Grand Hyatt in Melbourne, convened by the Australasian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine (ACNEM), CSIRO Food & Nutritional Sciences and the Nutrition Society of Australia. The meeting was chaired by Dr Norman Swan, of the ABC Health Report, and opened by the Hon Catherine King, Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing. The conference saw invited speakers and delegates calling for an urgent paradigm shift, to translate nutritional science into both medical practice and public health policy. World-leading psychiatrists, gastroenterologists, endocrinologists, and genetic and nutritional scientists, pointed to nutritional deficiencies and imbalances in conditions such as depression, Type 2 Diabetes, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and colorectal cancer,

along with the potential for nutritional interventions, at both an individual and public health policy level to impact on and prevent these conditions. The World Health Organisation (WHO) states, “Chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, respiratory diseases and diabetes, are by far the leading cause of mortality in the world, representing 63% of all deaths.â€? These are largely preventable, lifestyle-related conditions of “long duration and generally slow progressionâ€?, resulting in billions of dollars of potentially avoidable healthcare spending and untold personal cost. WHO provides a roadmap for reversing this epidemic including, “Scaling up the implementation of evidence-based measures to reduce risk factors‌and improving access to cost-effective healthcare interventions.â€? “Numerous studies confirm that Australians and New Zealanders don’t achieve the basic nutritional requirements for maintenance of health and well-being, further compounded by chronic lifestyle-related imbalances and

excesses, said Dr Karel Hromek, President of ACNEM. “Yet our healthcare system remains focused on pharmaceutical disease management while overlooking the underlying causes of many conditions. This is clearly shortsighted and unsustainable. A/Prof Eugen Molodysky, Clinical Associate Professor, Sydney Medical School, and Vice President of ACNEM, said, “We call on the medical schools in Australia and New Zealand to urgently review their undergraduate curricula to ensure that future doctors receive training in nutritional and environmental medicine. General Practitioner (GP) training must also develop doctors’ knowledge and skills in this area since GPs are both primary care providers and the gateway to the healthcare system. All medical practitioners must have sufficient training in nutritional biochemistry to recognise and investigate the signs and symptoms of nutritional imbalances, deficiencies and environmental toxicities and incorporate these factors into management and treatment for improved patient outcomes.

My journey of self-empowerment By By Judy Mills

he first forty years of my life involved many twists and turns and presented me with many lessons to learn… Eventually I reached a point where I knew I had to own what was happening to my health and take full control to heal my body and mind on all levels. At fifteen years of age I was diagnosed with Poly Arthritis forcing me to leave school, due to the inability to write. My body was completely challenged; particularly my arms which were so severely affected. In my thirties I had a tumor in my lung and rib cage, then had a hysterectomy in my late thirties… All the while I never felt well… I was just existing… In my forties, I owned and ran businesses, led a stressful life without a lot of balance, (obviously running on adrenal stress, not truly managing my life as we should under these circumstances). Then at the age of 51, I was biologically over 100 years old with cancerous cells… This was a true wake up call!! And this time I knew it was up to

me. I had to take responsibility to heal and change my life in so many ways and on so many levels. I sold my last business in late 1998, then I was fortunate to have the time to continue to heal and empower myself with knowledge and research, and truly take charge of my own destiny. I became extremely interested in health care and also anti-ageing and at that time my research took me to work with one of the leading anti-ageing practitioners in Australia. I was like a sponge; learning, studying and soaking up knowledge. How could we bring the youth back into our bodies? Could we have them functioning biologically many years younger than our chronological age? When we find the right balance holistically… Wow!! About three years ago I started working in a scientific field looking at heart health (Heart Disease being the No. 1 killer of people). As we age, we lose a nutrient called Nitric Oxide from our bodies. This may result in a loss of pliability from the arteries and veins, compromising our health and blood flow

to all parts of the body. I also saw when we added a particular nutrient (a precursor to nitric oxide) the biological age became much younger. Oxygen levels and blood flow also greatly improved… Then I wanted to see if there was a nutrient that would do the same for the outer skin. And it wasn’t long before I found it in the product ‘LifeCell’. It contains the precursor to Nitric Oxide, along with other nutrients that will heal and de-age the skin… firming the collagen, all with a molecular structure that will penetrate twenty levels deep. This formula is safe and compatible with our human chemistry. Although, the science behind this product is what drew me in and I’m delighted to have walked the path I have to wellness and also be responsible for bringing this knowledge to Australia today.

Embracing Change and Releasing Yourself from the Past By Amanda De Warren

he change of seasons reminds us that nature is constantly changing and that we, as part of nature, are constantly changing and evolving too. For some who like things to stay the same, change can be difficult, but if we embrace change we can often release ourselves from past issues that hold us back and blockages that prevent us from fulfilling our potential. This allows us to create a healthy mind/body/spirit connection. My work as a professional medium, psychic and animal communicator involves helping clients change parts of their lives they’re not happy with. It could be a destructive emotion such as guilt or anger which can be helped by connecting with a passed over loved one with whom they associate that emotion. They might feel guilt over the way a pet passed away

or be dealing with a current pet’s naughty behaviour. Receiving messages from the source can get to the root of these issues and release people from the negative feelings that might be holding them back emotionally and/or physically. The enormous relief felt can truly help them gain clarity about the way forward and make any necessary changes in the way they think, feel or act. I find that the healing side of my gifts is extremely satisfying and can also aid change. Healing can be transferred in many forms, such as from person to person/animal or through a very strong and powerful connection from the universe. Understanding your chakras is also an important component in connecting to your guides, the universe and to your loved ones, and I teach this in my workshops and seminars. Chakras are a connection point from our own bodies and souls which enable us to connect on many levels, and no two people are the same when it comes to chakras.

We can become caught up in our set ways and resist change, but this can have a very negative effect on us. I also pass on ways to gain protection from negative energies, which if not kept in check can become quite dangerous. I’d liken it to going into the forest without the appropriate clothing and gear. The important thing to remember is that you can change your life for the better once you learn how to make those vital connections – whether it’s to a passed over loved one, a pet or to your own inner spiritual resources. Please read about how I discovered my gifts and see the services I offer on my website:

Dynamic Partnerships – action for animals By Eileen McLean

dynamic partnership is characterized by energy or effective action by those involved in the partnership. It is developing an understanding of what the desired future looks like, creating a roadmap for achieving that outcome, and then taking action to walk the path of success. This approach works well whether you are in a partnership, or part of an organization or movement for change. Dynamic partnerships should be mutually beneficial to all parties, and there needs to be capacity to grow and evolve over time to be sustainable long term. I am lucky enough to be part of a number of dynamic partnerships, all working towards the mutual goal of action for animals. In April this year I joined forces with friends and colleagues, Jenny Golsby and Graham Fells, in the development of a completely natural animal centre in Brisbane. We promote natural therapies, ethical pet foods and products, education and animal welfare. I ran my own business from home for many years but felt I needed to step out in order to grow

the business. Jenny, Graham and I have been able to form a dynamic partnership based on mutual respect, shared beliefs, and common goals for the ultimate benefit of animals and pet owners wanting natural and ethical alternatives. As secretary for horse rescue organization “Charlie’s Angels” I am surrounded by dynamic partnerships in action, bringing about effective and positive change for horses on a daily basis. These partnerships are between the founders, committee members, star foster carers – located throughout South-East Queensland, our sponsors and supporters, and people who share our vision and spread the word about the good works of Charlie’s Angels Horse Rescue. Charlie’s Angels was officially registered as a charity in October 2009 with the purpose to rescue and rehabilitate abused, neglected, abandoned and homeless horses in order to improve their lives. Another amazingly dynamic partnership is husband and wife team Sharyn and Russell Banks. They run Red Collar Rescue, located in Woowonga. The

organization’s primary aim is to provide temporary refuge, and eventually new homes, for abandoned, abused, unwanted and death row dogs. Sharyn and Russell commit themselves day in and day out to the rehoming of dogs. They live on-site and work 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Sharyn has had animals her entire life, and has always been vocal about the need to desex pets and promoting responsible ownership. Proudly vegan, she tries to embody all aspects of animal welfare. Russell values all animals and is always there to give the love and cuddles that rescue dogs so often need. As well as doing all of the hard work that running a refuge entails, he never loses his smile and kindness, devoting his life to making the world a better place for canines. These examples of dynamic partnerships all have the drive to see action for animals, from alternative therapies and education to rescue and rehabilitation. It is through energy and effective action, and a common cause that these partnerships thrive.

The Art of Making Babies By Katrina Zaslavsky

ver watched the typical movie scene where the woman calls her partner with an urgent tone of “hurry home, I’m ovulating?!!” Amusing to watch but a bit too close to home for one in six Australian couples, unable to conceive after a year of trying, according to a 2006 National Fertility Survey. Infertility is no laughing matter and an increasingly common, complex issue we face today. Notice how something traditionally effortless, loving and sacred, has turned into a mechanical, loveless ‘job’ or obsession. The longer the result doesn’t show up, the more anxiety builds until it can interfere with the relationship itself. Why is it that not so long ago, couples were trying not to get pregnant and now

try to get pregnant and often can’t? Male infertility accounts for about half of all infertility problems. Significant declines in male fertility have been reported in a number of countries in the past several decades and thought to be a result of changing environmental conditions. So what on earth has changed? We live in a toxic world. Poor crocodiles are becoming infertile after spraying in the fields with toxic pesticides, via contamination of the very waters they swim in. So too, we humans are swimming in our own toxic swamps – the inside of our bodies – thanks to the same environmental toxicity that we face. Going organic or washing our fruits and vegetables in a safe non toxic solution is an important step. To conceive a healthy baby, we need to be conscious of food choices. Naturopaths will often put couples on a detox to clean up the ‘toxic swamps.’ Overloaded with toxic chemicals from our unwholesome lifestyles, it’s no wonder our normal body processes are inhibited.

Why not create a loving space and connection with our partner? Perhaps look at a change of scenery by going on holiday or at least regular ‘date nights’ to just ‘be’ and have fun together rather than ‘do.’ When couples only connect over to-do lists and daily duties, it takes away from the romance and magic of the relationship and we may forget why we are even together in the first place. Being in a relaxed, beautiful environment without the pressures of daily life can make a big difference. So start dating your partner again and go back to the very beginning. Be detached from the outcome. The best creations flow from a loving inspired space, not to meet any imposed deadlines or expectations. And so it is with the most creative process of making babies. Like birth itself, you can’t make it happen, you can only create the right conditions then let go and allow it to happen. So just let go and let it flow!

Astrologically speaking with Lyvea Rose June 4: Full moon in Sagittarius plus lunar eclipse. The month of Gemini is still in full swing as June begins. Following on from the solar eclipse on May 21, this lunar eclipse signals “long-awaited breakthroughs” for those who have been busy in their alchemical laboratories. So how exactly do you turn lead into gold? It’s a metaphor, of course, about moving from your head (judgement) to your heart (self-acceptance). This is the biggest astrological theme for 2012, so let’s action it! June 6: Venus-Sun Occultation. A oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to witness Venus crossing the sun. The last time this occurred was 1882, and it won’t happen again until the year 2117. It always occurs in pairs; this time around, the first occultation was in June 2004, and this is the second. The ancient Mesopotamians and the Mayans considered this a powerful time to connect with higher spiritual forces – and it will be clearly visible from Perth at dawn, and from the eastern states of Australia from about 8am onwards. This is truly a wonderful day to open up your third eye chakra, and to give and receive healings. June 12: Jupiter enters Gemini. For the coming year, Jupiter will be helping us

transform the way we think. All our ideas, and the stories we tell about ourselves, are going to be upgraded. Especially good for anyone whose life purpose is to generate positive and uplifting ideas. Hey, isn’t that all of us? June 20: New moon in Gemini. The month of Gemini comes to magnificent close. A superpowerful day for setting your intentions for the coming twelve months. Also a wonderful day for changing your name, or your direction in life.

mantra: “I AM LOVE. LOVE IS THE ONLY REALITY.” It’s potent. Try it and see. Lyvea’s supernatural adventure story about Gemini is now available from as an eBook (and yes, you can print out a copy). Each story stands alone; or you can read them all as the Zodiac year unfolds.

June 21, Winter Solstice. The cuddly month of Cancer begins. Cook up an Ayurvedic soup for the soul; forgive your family; adopt a puppy; support a rainforest; or all of the above. A window to the higher realms opens on this day. June 24: Uranus squares Pluto. Change on the personal level; change on the global level. Of course, this can bring periods of upheaval. If that is your situation, imagine you are on an ocean. The wise traveller does not worry about the waves that toss the boat. She is content to trust her Soul to carry her safely over the sea to a calmer and happier place. In shaky moments, I recommend this
