follow your bliss! healing (this was true for my own healing journey as well). Now nearly 15 years later, while I don’t see clients for counselling anymore, I am still inspired by the human potential and the ability we all have to heal our lives. Many of our writers this month have worked in both the mainstream and the alternative fields and some have integrated both, others feel they can be more true to themselves in the alternative or with a more ‘out of the box’ way of being in the world. Regardless of what we choose and which perspectives we resonate with, can we find a place personally to apply what works and allow others to do the same, free from judgement? Can we all learn from each other and the different perspectives…while allowing room to move, change and grow?

became a registered psychologist quite early in life and I remember many said I was too young and no one would talk to a 24-yearold…but you know age never came into the equation and I found it a privilege to work alongside clients who were open and ready for change. There is also something to be said for having a clear intent and focus, no matter what age you are. It was a time of ‘fast track’ learning for me as I worked as a psychologist and freelance writer, at the same time I kept meeting interesting people along the way who were changing their lives through herbal detoxification, energy work, juicing, meditation, and working with deeper levels of consciousness. I was fascinated! And I was keen to integrate both the traditional and alternative views into how I saw the world of

Rosemary 10 Minute Thermo Kitchari

By Vicki Taylor, Queen of Spice

ative to the Mediterranean, Rosemary is a woody, evergreen herb that is highly fragrant. It’s also a very hardy plant that requires very little water so it’s a great plant for those of us that don’t have green fingers! Rosemary contains lots of antioxidants and it is said to improve memory. Most people associate Rosemary with lamb and roast vegetables. Every time I use it the aromas take me on a culinary journey back to Greece and Turkey, where it is used abundantly. It’s a very versatile herb and can be used in almost any dish and with any meat nowadays. Dried cut Rosemary leaves go really well in casseroles and soups as the flavour is infused with time. Try adding when making some bread or scones or add a shake of Himalayan sea salt infused with roasted cut rosemary leaves that will take BBQ’d meat toanother level, especially lamb! YUM

By Eumundi Medicine Man, Jay Mulder

To be successful with your Thermo Kitchari you need a wide neck thermos so it can be properly cleaned. Ingredients: 1/5 cup organic basmati rice 1/5 cup yellow split mung dahl You may need to adjust quantities according to the size of your thermos

Method: Place the dahl and rice in a sieve and wash. Place a dash of ghee in a pot and add cumin seed and grated ginger, fry for 30 seconds, add a pinch of asafoetida, add a little caulif ower of vegies, fry for a moment, add the washed rice and dahl, stir. Add 3 cups of water a good pinch of turmeric and a few pinches of Saindhava Ayurvedic rock salt to taste, boil for 10 minutes or so. Occasionally you can add a touch of tomato paste and a pinch of rapadura. Add your own twist by powdering up a little cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger and pepper or add Garam Masala or paprika. Preheat your thermos for a few minutes by f lling it with boiling water, remove the water. Pour your kitchari into the f ask and quickly seal. The kitchari will continue cooking and by lunchtime it will be ready to go.

ne of my loves in this lifetime is exploring and finding unique places to dine out on the Sunshine Coast. Whether it be a quick take-away morning coffee on my way to see a client; a sit down, relaxing lunch with my partner; or a fun night out for dinner, there’s something exciting about finding a place you haven’t noticed before, and one, that once you find it you wonder how you ever missed it. A few months back I stumbled upon Empire Organics & Cafe in Nambour. A cosy hole in the wall that I visit most mornings during the week for their $5 yummy coffee and mouth-watering berry muffin special. And as I’ve ventured back time and time again, I’ve watched the stylish ‘Melbourne meets French Provincial’ space grow into a buzzing Nambour meeting point. Antique treasures give a warm feeling of stepping into another time and place. Beautifully crafted distressed wooden tables and chairs from the 1920’s and 30’s are accompanied by a myriad of rare and splendid pieces, including: an original Fry’s Chocolate Glass Cabinet; a 100-year-old mill that will be used on-site for milling

gluten free flours; a gorgeous cast iron pepper grinder; wooden wine racks that line the back wall; and collectable teaspoons that sit alongside each customers coffee cup. But it’s not just the decor that makes this a favourite cafe and restaurant for people all over the Coast and the Hinterland. Lyndon and Tamara pride themselves on sourcing local produce right down to the Noosa coffee beans and the Kenilworth cheese. They also specialise in vegetarian, gluten free, and dairy free products. But don’t expect a set menu… Another wonderful point of difference at Empire Organics is that this changes weekly depending on local in-season produce. Oh, and don’t forget Jazz night Friday’s. Be sure to book though as the house fills quickly for this one. My partner and I recently had a fantastic night out listening to the talented Laura Mitchell amidst the din of excited and happy chatter. And the three course meal of home-made pumpkin ravioli, braised lamb shanks, and chocolate pudding were exquisite. No guesses here that we will be heading back very soon for another spoiling of the senses.

Why Consume Grass-Fed Dairy? By Sarah Clarke, owner of Natural Earth Health Products

e have all heard the saying “you are what you eat”, some have heard the important close on that statement “you are what you absorb” that said and very true, have you really considered “You are what your food eats”? In this case, let me breakdown for you the benefits of the humble dairy cow that eat what God intended…Grass! Cows are

grazing animals and are endowed with the ability to digest grasses, which those of us who possess one stomach cannot. Today many dairy farms around the world feed cows grain or corn instead of grass; why? Because it’s more profitable. Switching a cow from grass to grain is so disturbing to the animal’s digestive system that it can kill the animal if not done gradually and if the animal is not

continually fed antibiotics. Cows were designed to forage and making them eat grain or corn is not natural. Apart from being healthier for the animal, there are a number of positives to feeding cows grass over grain. The chemical composition of milk is drastically different, depending on the way in which milk producing cows are kept. Modern farming practices mean

that cows usually eat hay and a specially produced feed, which certainly gives them all the nutrients they need, but is vastly different than cows that are free to graze and eat grass at their leisure. It is more natural which leads to healthier cattle and therefore healthier milk and protein. In a side-by-side comparison, it has been determined that grass-fed dairy and beef: (ref Dr J Mercola). • Contained more Beta Carotene (Vit A) • Is Lower in total fat • Higher in vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) • Higher in the B-vitamins thiamin and riboflavin • Higher in the minerals calcium, magnesium, and potassium • Has a healthier ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids • Higher in CLA • Higher in vaccenic acid (which can be transformed into CLA) • Lower in the saturated fats linked with heart disease Ever heard of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)? Most people haven’t, and yet it’s something that’s present in milk and dairy products in greatly varying amounts. In an article published by ABC Science, by Lynne Peeples – Reuters, The Harvard School of Public Health in Boston found in a study of 4000 people that those with the highest

concentrations of CLAs – the top fifth among all participants – had a 36% lower risk of heart attack compared to those with the lowest concentrations. Those findings held true even once the researchers took into account heart disease risk factors such as high blood pressure and smoking. “Because pasture grazing leads to higher CLA in milk, and it is the natural feed for cattle, it seems like more emphasis should be given to this type of feeding,” says Campos. CLA is greatly beneficial to humans, since an abundance of this acid is said to reduce the chance of heart disease by more than one third. It helps to increase antioxidant and cancer fighting properties, assists with the elimination of toxins from the body, builds the immune system, and provide nutritional support to the body. It helps to build and cover up the deficient glutathione levels, by providing the body with vital cell nutrients like cysteine, glutamic acid and glycine. It also boosts other antioxidants in the body, like vitamin C and vitamin E, and lipoic acid. Besides being an antioxidant, it also has antiviral and antimicrobial properties. So, since you are what you eat and absorb, the beneficial effects of eating grass-fed dairy products with the proper

FOOD FOR THE SOUL balance of fatty acids are translated into health benefits for you. These foods are rich in all the fats now proven to be health-enhancing, and low in the fats that have been linked with disease. When it came to watching the staff at Burma in Ya Belly plate up, it was like observing a piece of artwork being created; two

Catch his Consciousness:

Interview with Ben Lee

By Vanessa Finnigan

is hit song, ‘Catch my disease’ eight years ago was, well… infectious, as we fell in love with his innocence and joy and it put him on the musical map. But there is so much more to Ben Lee… I was fascinated to talk with him this month and discover how open he was about his recent experiences of exploring his inner psyche and the change that’s brought to his life and his music. Born in Sydney but based in L.A, America for the last seventeen years, Ben is married with two children and finds a way to still maintain a solid relationship with his Aussie fans and relatives. He was brought up in a Jewish family but had a broader interest in spirituality and has been meditating since he was eighteen 14

14.indd 1

(he also performs a Hindu chanting ritual on most days). What’s even more interesting is Ben (34) still finds a way to be a part of the mainstream music industry when he chooses, while being true to himself (we recently saw him as a guest mentor on Channel Nine’s ‘The Voice’). He’s never really played it safe musically, and is quite happy for his music to be considered alternative at times. Ben’s just released a new album, ‘Ayahuasca – welcome to the work’ (which will make this his 9th studio album), and has had some interesting experiences with Ayahuasca, a plant based brew used traditionally by Amazonian Shamans. It’s not without its controversy and mixed reports and

it’s illegal in countries apart from South America mostly due to its psychedelic compound DMT. Ben made it quite clear that for him, Ayahuasca is a healing modality but it’s not suitable for everyone. “The amazing thing about Ayahuasca is its ability to open the unconscious for brief periods. I think people can get confused because they think the reason for working with Ayahuasca is to reach some sort of Nirvanic bliss that is drug induced. You don’t take it to feel good you take it to feel bad. It deliberately takes you into the struggles and conflicts and traumas that are hidden from you in everyday life,” he said. Ben explained while that is very difficult to do, the payoff is when you make direct contact with the inner

Holistic Bliss, July 2013

6/20/2013 2:20:48 PM

struggles, symptoms of anxiety and depression etc can fall away. He said, “in western culture there is no context for Ayahuasca and most people think it’s a recreational drug. It’s very far from it.” “I’ve only really ever been interested in things held within a context of real psychological exploration. I’m not a ‘recreational’ person in general, I like to work with intention with everything whether it’s talking with friends or a meal I have or going for a walk. It’s always about growth, exploration and healing.” Ben has worked with one specific Hindu teacher in all but one of his Ayahuasca experiences. He mentioned it’s not something you can do alone and is a ceremonial ritual within a very strict and contained atmosphere facilitated by people who really know what they are doing. He believes it’s about exploring one’s inner landscape and letting go of an identity that you’ve held very dearly and entertaining what it would be like to not hold onto that. “For the most part that’s quite a terrifying experience but it’s also very liberating,” he said. Ben revealed one of the biggest things he’s let go of during his recent introspective experiences, is the need to ‘know’, and the false belief that it’s possible to ‘know’. “Recently the immensity of the mystery has come into focus a little more for me and it’s clear that there is no way we can begin to understand it with our conscious mind. I’ve noticed my music has become more abstract and I feel less tied to formulas in my work, and my relationships have changed because I think humility allows you to love and be loved. That’s been a big thing for me.”

At the same time Ben commented that it’s possible to have similar experiences without Ayahuasca. “ I don’t think it’s the only way. I’m not an evangelist for my experiences. This is one of the ways it showed up in my life and it’s okay to receive help. It’s not really about the Ayahuasca, it’s about the reality perceived and that reality has been perceived for thousands of years with many different paths. The Ayahuasca didn’t change my life on a physical level, my spiritual practices were already in place. What it gave me was something experiential that I only understood intellectually before,” he said. Ben has had some profound experiences and has integrated them into his daily life. Not only does he walk his talk, he says it’s important for him to be an example to his family and his audience. “What brings me joy and fulfilment is the awakening of consciousness; whether it’s mine, my children’s, my wife’s ,my community, the world through art and anything that helps you to be present in this moment and draws attention to the beauty, tenderness and intimacy that awakens consciousness- allowing that to be the driving force in everything we do. It’s the greatest gift to witness each other’s awakening.”

Develop a relationship with your higher power and there are many ways to do this-(through prayer or conscious contact). It’s crucial to have a dialogue with your higher intelligence.

We need to ‘conquer’ ourselves on the spiritual path, being humble in life means we don’t have to hold onto things. All the mystics have taught that ‘to really live we need to ‘die’ before we physically die to experience our inner depths.

Service to humanity – it’s easy to get caught up in the idea that there is not enough to go around and say, ‘what can I do? I don’t even have enough’ but there is always something you can do… it might be a phone call to support someone or contribute in some way. I don’t know what it is but something happens when you start thinking about others you connect to something much bigger. It’s a revolutionary process. For more information visit:

Ben’s tips for being authentically you:

Have an inner practice of some kind. Meditation allows you some separation from the drama of life. The drama is a distraction. It’s hard to see the true story of your inner world when you are caught up in the drama of the world.

Mainstream and the Alternative Vanessa: What’s it like becoming more alternative musically? Ben: It’s been a progressive thing over the last few records. “When I brought out ‘Ripe’ in 2007 (with appearances from Benji Madden and Mandy Moore), I was courting the mainstream industry but I was disappointed by the results professionally and emotionally. People used to say I was quirky and unique and it was often said condescendingly as if those qualities are draw backs. It’s not cynical to say those aren’t qualities that are celebrated on mainstream radio. But over the last six or seven years I’ve become even more idiosyncratic, personal and honest. It’s an interesting journey. What I do f nd is that for people that do connect with my work I have an immense gratitude and feeling of connection to them. So it’s a smaller audience but I feel more connected to them.” Holistic Bliss, July 2013

Dissolving Barriers Through

Music and Sharing

By Soraya Saraswati – Soul Purpose Mastery – Living Love

am writing this as I sit in Moscow airport with Terry, awaiting a flight to Tallinn in Estonia, our next port of call on our “Peaceful Hearts” music and seminar tour. We are three weeks into a three-and-a-half month tour with many events to go. I feel a little tired however deeply peaceful and grateful to be able to experience a life of continued learning and sharing with beautiful people as my vocation. After studying firstly in the dental field of health, then feeling stuck in a limiting profession, I realised if I wanted to be happy, I would have to follow my passion of working with people for a deeper purpose in life. At the age of 21 I consciously stepped away from this conservative profession choosing to follow my love of the more esoteric studies of yoga, meditation, and healing. This also led me into the power of sound through Nada Yoga and Mantra in Ashram life. This passion has blossomed into my life’s work as it is now travelling far and wide, sharing seminars and

Mystical Music Concerts with my husband and life partner Terry Oldfield. The journey has not always been easy, I am constantly challenged, however I have to say each humbling life experience has made me a better, stronger and more loving, conscious person. Singing and sharing is my passion, my love and commitment to make a positive difference in people’s lives wherever and whenever I can feeds my soul and gives purpose to life. Moscow has been a fascinating experience. Our new friends here are open hearted and of generous spirit. The people of Russia are tasting newfound freedom since 1991 with the collapse of the USSR and the Berlin Wall. After years of the isolating repression of communism, cut off from the outside world the new generation of Russians are craving freedom in every way. Desperate to release long held emotional pain it was so touching to work with these beautiful people. Travel has shown me in no uncertain

terms that we are all the same in our essence, desiring acceptance, inner freedom, peace and love. We attract what we vibrate out to the world of course. If we acknowledge our karmic lessons, embrace the learning, release victim consciousness and gain wisdom free of egoic bondage, we will raise our vibration to a level where we will attract into our lives our soul purpose at its highest level. We look forward to returning to our little cottage in the Hinterland rainforest, to the birds and nature and family after the tours. The spirit is always richer, the ego more humbled and ever grateful for each rich moment of life. It will be wonderful to share. I guess you could call our work alternate however for us it is normal and I do hope that the meditative, inspirational and transcendental work we share will one day become the new mainstream. The human spirit is calling for a deeper love and freedom of spirit.

hat if life was meant to be the best of both worlds – have you heard that saying? Well it is true – you can have your cake and eat it too! Integrating the physical and metaphysical aspects of health and healing are really important and can create amazing results. The best part of modern day science and health is that we can choose what we want according to our belief. Having a nursing background and seeing the affects of both sides, I wanted to share about the wonderful pancreas from both aspects. If there was one organ in the body that empowers us it would be the PANCREAS. Who would have thought this simple but large endocrine could be the one body part that could make us feel on top of the world or of the lowest self esteem. And this is the organ that most affects teenagers and their moods and yet can be so easily aided to help and empower them. The pancreas

lies behind the stomach and secretes a variety of substances and hormones essential for the effective digestion of food. It also produces insulin, which helps control the blood’s sugar level. One of the physical dysfunctions of this endocrine is diabetes, a disease caused by excess sugar in the bloodstream. The pancreas is linked with the solar plexus and adrenalin, which is why we experience ‘butterflies in the stomach’ during frightening experiences. The pancreas empowers the physical body. However the pancreas can disempower the body metaphysically and mentally. The pancreas is very important on a metaphysical level as it is referred to as the subconscious brain. Who would have thought that by having sugar this organ will totally change your perception and create a world of ‘negative perception’ and block your creativity. This endocrine metabolizes sugar in the blood stream however when an individual has sugar, it

keeps the mind in at state of limbo and disconnected to the God/good within and the higher brain or known as the higher self can not get through. The sugar seems to block the connection between the two hemispheres of the brain and the bridge between the conscious and subconscious brains – intuition. As we have seen through children, the sugar affects children and creates anger in some. The sugar affects the moods of people and can create huge moodiness especially in teenagers. This moodiness is the change on a metaphysical level where the emotion anxiety is triggered. Then the children react in fear, the outcome is arguments, and unexplained perceptions from teenagers from parental comments and more. The anger is stirred as the sugar goes to the liver – organ of anger. So what sweetness do you have in life without sugar?????

Freedom, Choice and Co-operation! O

Photo Adori Studios

By Raelene Byrne

ver the last two decades, the clear line in the sand between the worlds we choose to work in has become quite blurred. The mainstream world, has its own rules, expectations, behaviours, and patterns that follow guidelines set by those who have succeeded and built empires which we serve. At some stage in our life, the majority of the population, have aspired and worked in the mainstream world. These working environments have decided, selected and implemented what is normal or conventional in the world of employment and set up a working code which follows dominant opinions, thoughts and structures. This is a world where we have been taught to believe that there is a “certainty of income”, a place to climb the ladder towards success as long as we follow the structures and parameters that are in place. We are encouraged to live with an “overt” competitive nature as we go about the daily duties in the workplace. The polar opposite, has been called the Alternative. For decades, the Alternative world has been treated flippantly as the place where the “assumed” hippies, new-agers, weirdos, and free thinkers tend to gather. The reality we see now is that those people have chosen to work in a more heart based way, seeing and wanting to create other possibilities outside of the structures that the mainstream has in place. This is becoming quite a force, one that is bringing great awareness, change and thinking outside of the

box. This alternative world entices those who have consciously connected to their soul’s pathway and their personal commitment to make a difference. Co-operation tends to be the underlying current, supported by new thinking, visions, fresh ideas that are moving towards an holistic way of life. This alternative world has grown from lessons learnt, both good and bad from the mainstream. Education systems tend to ‘herd’ us into a particular mindset of success, careers and jobs, and encoded in our psyche as “safety and survival instinct” which becomes apparent in our work environment. Awareness is rising, about how the mainstream has seduced us into a way of thinking that has in fact made us slaves to the bigger picture created by corporations and business. It has also gifted us with discipline, focus and structural ways to create new visions and bring them to a practical existence. As the merging of alternative and mainstream gathers momentum, our working environment can blossom with so many bountiful possibilities. We are creating a new world, we are building new foundations. If you can go to work each day with a lightness of heart, a passion that feeds your desire to be the best at what you offer, loving what you do, then it doesn’t matter whether you are in mainstream or alternative worlds, you are engaged in a world that is best for you and that makes a difference in the big picture.

Creating a Conscious World: Where everyone knows they can make a difference What is Consciousness? And what’s the value of Creating a Conscious World? Consciousness includes everything and judges nothing®. We hear a lot of talk about people seeking Oneness and that we are all interconnected. The utopian ideal of Oneness is seen across all platforms for spirituality and yet in this quest for oneness we seem to neglect looking at the one key element that is the cause of all separation – judgment. To create Oneness, we need to stop the lie of separation and to do that we need to stop judging – ourselves, each other, the planet – everything. Could it really be that simple? Think back to a time when you were alone in nature. What was that sensation you had? Peace? Calm? The freedom to BE? What was it that was NOT present

in order for you to experience that? Have you ever wondered? In nature, there is total absence of judgment. When you are surrounded by nature, judgment ceases to exist. Nature doesn’t judge you. In that space we have a glimpse of what it’s like to BE and it draws us back to nature time and again with a longing for that sense of joy, of Oneness. What’s the value of Creating a Conscious World? Does a life with more ease sound like fun to you? What would the world be like if there were more joy, no separation and more kindness? When you become aware of where judgment exists in your world you have the freedom to make a different choice. Consciousness is created in each moment you have the courage to choose something different.

What if business is the adventure of living?

And a conscious world is created by the leaders who are willing to ask questions. They are the seekers, the ones among us who know there is something more. You become a leader of your own life when you begin to ask questions and make choices that are true for you, without judgment or conclusion on whether it is right or wrong. And by stepping into that richness of living and becoming a leader of your own life, you invite other people to do the same. True leaders choose, whether anyone follows or not and that’s how we can begin to create a conscious world. A world where new possibilities exist for everyone who knows they can make a difference. One Treatment Can Be Life Changing The Atlas supports your head and governs structural alignment. A misaligned Atlas causes restriction of the brain stem, spinal cord, cranial nerves and arteries. This limits our potential for wellbeing and creates tension, restricting the free flow of energy. When the Atlas is installed correctly, the body begins an unwinding process, releasing holding patterns and enabling the body to heal and regenerate.

Psychology Two Worlds between

By Vanessa Bushell

eing a psychologist who sees outside the square, I walk between the two worlds of mainstream society and the alternative community. With a passion for understanding Eastern philosophy, energy work, alternative therapies and spirituality, psychology for me has been a unique combination of traditional Western ways of understanding and working with the conscious mind, as well as Eastern and even esoteric ways of understanding unconscious energetic systems. While these two worlds may often be in conflict, I see where they meet and work in synergy with each other. For example, the more we discover about Eastern practices of meditation and mindfulness, the more scientific benefit we find on common Western psychological conditions such as depression and anxiety. Recent mindfulness based therapies in psychology are embracing these ancient practices to help people learn to

tolerate and regulate intense emotional swings, create peace where there has been mental anguish and reduce psychological distress. The key as a psychologist is to ascertain the worldview, language and understandings of the client to decide whether to introduce alterative ways of understanding the mind in therapy. When people are open to alternative therapies, spiritual healing and balancing energy, then these practices can be embraced in psychology to heal the mind and emotion. In fact, some of the best outcomes I have personally witnessed in therapy are where clients are accessing both psychology and alternative therapies such as kinesiology or acupuncture. Within session, while there may not be an overt acknowledgement of the process, I strongly utilise my own intuition, inner-senses and my ability to ‘feel into the energy’ of the issue, as I work with people’s emotional pain. It is

kind of like a heightened awareness of the ‘clinical nose’ often spoken about in mainstream psychology. This is the psychology of the future! Recent movements in mindfulness, happiness, and positive psychology within this mainstream modality signify this shift in our thinking about the psyche. Bridging alternative wisdom with Western science opens up a whole new understanding of healing the human condition. Using alternative energy clearing techniques without psychology can leave us open to worsening psychological conditions and increased vulnerability to confusion and distress. On the other hand, traditional psychological treatment can be slow and arduous and can solidify an identity of being mentally ill. Blending the two, we can take from both worlds and create a new blend of psychology that embraces mind, body and soul. Vanessa Bushell, Conscious Solutions

Self Love at The Joining

Opening to

didn’t want to be at The Joining 2012. Prior to this once-a-year event I’d been living a hermit-like existence, out of relationship and feeling depths of pain and sorrow that really had me not too keen to be at any sort of “new age hippy fest as part of me imagined the event to be. And yet on a whim and the whiff of, “maybe this could be fun and it might just get me out of my funk! I did register. I paid my hard earned money and there I was on the first day of The Joining standing amongst 140 strangers (seemed like more) and just wanting to escape — feeling awkward and insecure and worse. Breaking off into a small group of people that The Joining refers to as an “affinity group I sat with a few others and we shared some of our fears and hopes. I remember saying that I wanted to run away but that I would stay and that my intention was just to feel okay about myself.

And then I watched as something began to change in me, and within 24 hours my heart was open in a way that I only too rarely experience in life. I was in love with everyone who’d walked onto this field of dreams and even more amazing I was feeling good about me. My senses expanded – everyone whose eyes met mine was like an open book and I saw in my brothers and sisters the same stuff – all of us with our fears and doubts and the desire to be seen, accepted, appreciated and loved. I even got up and sang a song to an appreciative audience and walked away with more inspiration and love for myself. Since that profound weekend, I’ve continued to grow in my relationship with me and have begun to cultivate relationships with others to greater depths of authenticity, love and compassion.

There’s so much on these days, so many workshops and events, it can be difficult to weed out the ordinary from the extraordinary. And whilst I’ve only had the one Joining experience, as a catalyst for personal growth and transformation, it’s like the most succulent fruit from the most extraordinary tree in the forest. This three day celebration of men and women and life itself is now a permanent in my calendar. The Joining brings me to a place where I can open to the people, the music, the dance, have fun and re-ignite my passion for life. I look forward to meeting with new friends at this year’s event come 20th September Sunshine Coast, Qld. Medical Studies Find Link Between Immunity and Chiropractic

healthy spine equals a healthy life. Your skull and spine house and protect the body’s main control centre for healing and health, the brain and spinal cord, which make up your nervous system. Your nervous system provides the necessary energy to all areas of your body including organs like your heart, your lungs, and your stomach just to name a few. Your immune system and immune function is also dependent on this energy to operate at its optimal level. Recent studies have shown a link between immune system function and chiropractic adjustments. Of the 120 patients who were receiving chiropractic adjustments throughout the study 106 showed improvement in their Dermatitis (Inflammatory skin disease). When your spine is in the correct position, your body is staying healthy through full nerve supply. When the spine is misaligned, you are no longer receiving your energy or nerve flow to the body. This is what chiropractors call a subluxation. As a result of subluxation, your immune system is compromised

leaving you more susceptible to colds, flu and autoimmune diseases. How Do I Know If I Have Subluxation? Common signs of Subluxations are: • Unbalanced Posture • Stiffness and Pain • Headaches • Loss of spinal motion The most dangerous problem with subluxations are they can be present in your body with very little, and sometimes, no symptoms at all. The

safest and most effective way to find subluxations is by examination from a skilled chiropractor. As chiropractors, we are trained nervous system experts. Weekly regular trainings are dedicated to research the most effective ways to locate and correct subluxations. The staff at Hendrey Chiropractic is not only friendly, but also dedicated to see the Sunshine Coast living a Vibrant Healthy Life. For more information email:

and herbal medicine. A passionate medical colleague of mine once said “Today’s medicine is based on Chinese and alternative, and we tested it, tried it and everything that worked has become common place in mainstream medicine”. We are living longer and healthier lives than ever before because of advances in medicine, however we now seem to be unhappier than ever before. And this is great, as alternative approaches are helping and making huge differences to people’s lives. Alternative medicine certainly has an important role in today’s society, especially in its effect on the way we feel emotionally. No wonder it has become a rapidly growing industry as we are now focusing more on prevention and being proactive with our health. Alternative approaches take us back to nature, a place we somehow lost over the years. At Healing From the Heart we like to think of our clinic as “East meets West” and we are here to promote healthy living, relaxation and happiness. And let’s not forget a bit of fun and laughter.

Our passion is to model treatments that are both appropriate and sciencebased, using natural, chemical free products with appropriate referrals, be they based on mainstream medicine or natural approaches. Our mission is to help both disciplines hold hands and start working together as neither can really benefit us in a truly “holistic manner” until they do. The very term ‘holistic’ means using all available means in the treatment of the whole person. It’s interesting that traditionally the Chinese only paid their doctors while they were well. Naturally enough it was in the doctor’s interest to heal the patient as quickly as possible! Prevention was therefore the first priority. Today I’m delighted to note that a growing number of General Practitioners and Specialists are integrating things like acupuncture and nutrition into their practices. Right now on the Sunshine Coast our major health issues are Cardiology and Mental Health services. Cardiologist and rehab teams focus a lot on prevention

with diet and exercise and relaxation. Our Mental Health services are working as hard as they can in the hospitals and community. Medicine IS saving lives, however I fear that because of the rift between mainstream and alternative we are now losing lives in both areas. People have a right to choose, however they should be allowed to make informed decisions regarding their health and not feel threatened by what the community feels is right or wrong through scare tactics or false promises. I think we can all agree, prevention is better than the cure. So as I give much respect to both disciplines, I simply ask that you listen to each other. Let’s put our egos and agendas aside and make an effort to understand and collaborate with each other and always base our treatments and therapies on evidenced based research. After all we are after a common goal, and that’s the best possible treatment and welfare of our clients. For more information about Ceinie and ‘Healing from the Heart’ visit:

he conflict in whether to be mainstream or alternative can be seen everywhere. Unfortunately the conflict exists because of judgment and expectations. With out judging or expecting; OR; letting yourself be the impact of judgments and expectations from others, both can offer great things at different times. This article is aimed at women. There can be so much confusion as to what you are. Are YOU the mainstream woman? Or are YOU the alternative? How can ‘mainstream’ be described? Mainstream is the woman who can be described as the lady of the home. She makes all the home decisions. Decisions such as, what food is in the cupboard, when the laundry is done, or what washing powder is used! She has control over the social events for herself and her family, the housework etc. She knows what is going on at school for her children. Or if she has no children, she usually has a pet she loves and adores. She loves to organize everyone and feels quite needed here. She gives lots of her time to her children, partner and home chores, and leaves little time for her own play. If she takes time to herself it is usually under the excuse she needs it because she is overworked and needs a break. She never really admits to what she spends on her clothes, makeup or whatever. She apparently loves the idea of being at home all the time. Routine and repetition are something she pretends to love. This is what ‘society’ expects. How can ‘alternative’ be described?

Alternative – Who are YOU? This is the woman who loves to take time out for her AND does! She spends what she likes because she loves spending money on things that make her smile. She turns her hobby into something that makes her money. She easily drinks wine and nibbles on chocolate. She chooses to ‘play’ instead of wash clothes or orgainse dinner. She loves the idea of having a personal assistant to do the chores and look after the children. She is at her happiest when she is creating something of contribution to the planet. She loves variety. In everything! What alternative woman is still wearing the same boots she wore last winter – happily? In fact, she loves lots of new things, frequently! Society can judge this! Because of the judgment, the alternative woman can go to extremes, be defensive, over controlling or feel like something is wrong with her. Which one are YOU? YOU are both! In fact, the awareness of both, the permission to be both and the knowing that both offer you so much at different times, can in fact, make a big difference to your health and well

being as a woman AND especially your happiness. Authentic balance is the key here. Forget about any judgments or expectations. Yours or the ones from others! Tune in to your body and choose what you would love to give to YOU. There are days where you may feel alternative and there are days where you feel to be mainstream. Let yourself be free here. Honor both and love you in both spaces. Be ALL WOMAN regardless of judgments or expectations from others. Being ALL WOMAN can be likened to how the moon operates in our world. Sometimes it is full, sometimes it is half full and sometimes you can hardly see it at all. Sometimes it is out in the night and sometimes it is out in the day. In fact, it can be seen as being all over the place! YOU, as ALL WOMAN, are this too! There are days when you feel you love being at home cooking that chicken soup for the family; and even the neighbours! There are days when organizing your home is fulfilling and

satisfying, and looking at a tidy laundry is accomplishing. There are also days when you could love the idea of shopping all day and buying what you love, regardless of the cost or how many your already have at home. There are days when doing something you love – ‘playing’ – is so much more inviting than browsing through the isles at Coles; even when there is no more milk or bread! AND there are days when a glass of wine in the afternoon just to give you that light headed affect is just what you need before you head home from your day of play. Right now say this out loud to your body… “Body, today and for all days after this I give myself permission to be ALL WOMAN! As I choose and in my own way and time. I embrace the advantages of both mainstream and alternative. I also let go of any past judgments and expectations that get in the way of loving and being both mainstream and alternative.” With love and warmth… Jules O’Neill

Why Create a Yin & Yang Front Courtyard? By Jeannine Stephens

ost homes require either Yin OR Yang garden entrances but, some need BOTH! Do you know which your home needs? Most people have Yang entrances with lawns, little fencing and dominant driveways. However, some houses require a combination of Yin and Yang in their front garden. Why? There are some Feng Shui flying stars Qi that necessitate this to support wealth plus health and relationships for a harmonious life. A Yin and Yang garden requires stillness and a flow of movement, enclosed within a high walled courtyard. The wall must not block the house yet add mystery. The garden is designed to contain Qi, yet move it though connected spaces, unfolding in glimpses to the eye and inspiring the heart. Curving paths can be sculpted through various energetic spaces, leading from moving water, to solitude on a bench chair beneath trees, to a plethora of coloured plants of varying heights, to even a labyrinth, a space of mindfulness. This creation can move you from the outside world to your own sanctuary whilst supporting Qi for wealth and your health and relationships. Learn more! Discovering Choice Finding Your Voice By Kim Taylor

You’ll only speak for thirty minutes. You know the pharmaceutical industry inside out. You’ll be great, Karen”, said Michelle, her supportive boss of ten years. Michelle had always been there for Karen and they’d become great friends. However, the thought of speaking to over three hundred well-educated specialists, sent Karen’s blood pressure soaring, her heart pounding and feeling choked in the throat. Interestingly, when she was little girl, she had always dreamed of being on stage and speaking to hundreds of people. Karen secretly yearned for the day she would speak on the subject close to her heart, Lyme disease. She realised this was her opportunity. Karen made a decision. She didn’t want to let her wonderful boss or the company down. It was time to overcome her fear and improve her speaking skills. Karen chose Kim’s Ultimate Speaker Circle training program. She did so well because she was inspired to fully support her boss. She went on to become even more successful and now represents her company speaking nationwide. Karen took the steps to overcome her public speaking fears, fulfilling her vision and so much more. If you’re wondering what you can do about your public speaking fears or ability to communicate, contact Kim Taylor Ultimate Speaker on 0408 714 088 or email

10 Tips for Meditation By Cameron Aggs

The key task in meditation is to get to know your mind as it is. Regardless of whether it is busy or quiet, turbulent or peaceful, your job is to learn how to observe it without reacting. To do this you must be willing to make space for

As much as possible meditate at the he same time each day. Experiment with what works for you. Once you find a groove, find a way to slot meditation into your daily or weekly routine.

Guard your practice like a small plant – know that it can eeasily ea as be uprooted by the b bu busyness of your life. When you n o notice that the winds of the daily ch chores have laid waste to your p no practice pick it up again. There is no eend-goal with this. Commit to ttoday’s practice for its own sake.

how you are feeling as well. Do this in the first part of your meditation. Soon enough you will be sitting in space of your own presence. What a wonderful place to be!

A quiet place where you will not be disturbed is best for meditation. It is also good if the place that you use for meditation is not used for any purpose other tth haan han n meditation. This will help build an than atmosphere for practice. Often if this is not possible, therefore having a special sitting cushion, chair or mat that you can use and transport to different areas may be useful.

Any posture A t th that h t kkeeps tthe h bback k straight, the belly open, and the shoulders relaxed is suitable for meditation. Ideally the knees will be in line with or lower than the hips. If you are practising on a chair make sure you are sitting well forward, unsupported by the cushion at the back. In terms of what to do with the eyes and hands, experiment to find what works for you. Try sitting so that the hands are on the lap or on the knees. As for the eyes, many prefer to keep the eyes closed, others like to keep the eyes open ‘staring into empty space’.

Once you have selected a timeframe for your meditation practice (e.g. 5mins, 10mins, 20mins, 40mins etc) be mindful not to hop up from you practice until this timeframe has expired. This way you will cultivate a sense of mastery and confidence. If you find that you have got up, reclaim your seat. See the time through, even if it means, “just sitting there”. This too has its merits.

More than anything, meditation is about cultivating a kind and friendly relationship with yourself. Watch without judgement as the mind runs into the past, present and future. With kindness and firmness bring it back. Use your breath as an anchor. Maintain an awareness of this, even as thoughts rise and fall in the background.

Meditation is a delivery device for entering into mindful states of consciousness. That is all. You don’t need to be sitting on your cushion to do this. You can become mindful right now. Try this now, bring your attention to the feelings of your feet on the floor, your bottom in the chair and the next inbreath. Do this for three more deep and long breaths. Does time slow down? Does this allow a sense of peacefulness to emer em merge erge er ge?? emerge?

Enjoying the benefits from meditation is like eating fruit from fro your favorite tree. Before going to fr harvest, ha you must first till the soil, plant tthe tree, and nourish it until it blooms. th H Have patience with your practice. The ffruits are close by. fr

Perhaps look at maintaining your practice in two-week time slots. Review thereafter. Decide whether you want to contract yourself for another two weeks or take a break. If you take a break, try noticing what it feels like when you haven’t practice in a few days/week/ month. Does it make a difference?

Protection for your Children is Awareness

The best

By Glenna Rice, The Questionable Parent

ear, worry, and concern for your children is considered a valuable way to parent in this reality. It is often how parents prove they care for their children. If you are not worrying about your children you are not considered a normal parent. You may even be judged as unconcerned and uncaring. Most of us were parented from fear and have never seen a different possibility. The problem is that fear limits you and your children’s ability to know what is true. What if there is a different possibility?

What would it be like if you could parent without fear? Would it be different than what you are creating now? What could your children generate if you were not afraid for them, if they were not afraid, if they actually had access to what they know? Fear is never real. It is a distraction that keeps you from knowing. What if you could have easier access to your ability to know? If you function from awareness fear cannot exist because you will always know if your children are safe. You will know if your child is going to cross the street safely, or not, if your teenager is going to be ok going out with their friends, or not, if your child has studied enough for their next exam, or not and if they are going to be ok in the future. So what is awareness and how do you build the muscle to know that you know? Awareness, for most of us is light as a feather; it is often missed in this reality because it is rarely acknowledged and we give much more value to what feels dense and heavy. The density of this

reality is “louder” but awareness is much more substantial. The more often it is acknowledged, the more ticklish that feather becomes until it starts to become too difficult to ignore. Every time we acknowledge when we are aware, we give more tickle to that feather. When we are grateful for it and ask for more every time we have an awareness, we increase this ability to receive the information we are asking for. If you stop or shut down someone’s knowing by simply saying, “You can’t know that or that is not possible”, you disempower them, and with each disempowerment they disconnect more and more from their own ability to be aware. A great question to ask is “how does it get even better than this?” T his question allows you to acknowledge something great has shown up and ask for more. It will expand what is possible. How do you know? You ask a question and then perceive the energy, you do not look for an answer, you perceive what feels light or heavy. If it is

light it is true for you, if it is heavy it is a lie. If you are worried for your children, if you feel fear, ask a question. What is this energy? Is my child safe? Yes or no? What feels light? It actually is that easy! For nine years now, after first learning this tool in an Access Consciousness class and using it countless times with my three children who are now, 9, 15 and 19 and teaching this tool to hundreds of parents it has always worked. Functioning from the question and awareness is a much easier way to parent! You just have to desire it to be that easy. So much more magic is possible when we do not create the pretense of fear in place of awareness. You want to ask you children to be aware. Do not tell them to be careful. Teach them to be aware-full. I watched my youngest daughter teach herself how to swim in a few hours when she was three years old by jumping over and over again into the deep end of a pool and wiggling herself back to the side with total joy. When she first jumped I asked the question is she safe?

It was a yes, it was so light, I smiled. She did not have my fear to distract her from her knowing; allowing her more awareness of what was possible for her. My children are extremely aware like most of your children and if I create fear they perceive it and can override what they already know. What would it take to start creating something different and empower you and your children to know that you know! Glenna Rice MPT, is a Physio Therapist, Access Consciousness Facilitator who

f xes a lot of problems

By Jeremy Britton

Sometimes you have to run backwards to get where you need to be… Following the advice of others blindly, because you assume that they are smarter than you, can give you problems; many “experts” are not as smart as you think they are. Some of the “experts” are not as smart as they think they are, either. As a child, I was taught that my religious beliefs were correct; anyone who did not follow our “right” religion was going to die in torment. This was taught to me as truth by so-called experts. During a rebellious adolescence, I questioned the veracity of a loving God who would punish his creation. I questioned the learned experts who taught an “us and them” model of beloved and accursed peoples. The answers I found made me angry. Beneath my anger was the fear that my whole world was an illusion: that there were

34.indd 1

more than just two sides to the “us and them” model; perhaps, I was on the wrong side… It’s all Greek to me… In religious matters, there are Theists, who believe in God, A-theists who do not believe in God, and there are A-gnostics, who do not know whether there is a God. To better understand, I researched all sides and the language of their arguments. Theism and its opposite Atheism, were both named from the Greek word for God (“theos”). The happy little word “enthusiasm” comes from the Greek phrase “en theos” or “having God within”. (That fact lead to a new interpretation of many scriptures and writing a book about cultivating god-like spiritual power. More on that later!) The word agnostic comes from the opposite of the Greek word for knowledge (“gnoses” or “gnostic” meaning “one who knows”). Some are taught things and become “learned”

academics and some experience things and become “knowledgeable” scholars. An agnostic person was “one who has NOT experienced” and does NOT know. Some are bold enough to rely on experience and not on the rote teachings of others. I went to the doctor with a pain and he told me that he would do some diagnostic testing. His language told me that as an “agnostic”, he did not know what I had, and had never experienced it. Researching “gnosis” and knowing, I learned that I knew nothing for 100% sure, and neither did anyone else. The doctor could guess but not judge whether my illness was physical, mental, chemical or emotional in its causes. Despite medical science, humans are the sickest we have ever been in world history. Disease unheard of 500 years ago such as depression, obesity, cholesterol, highblood pressure, cancer or diabetes are now common.

Sometimes it is best to hit “Control-ALT-Delete”; just not in that order It’s OK to “Delete” what you have been taught. Delete the advice of wellmeaning others; whether they be friends, family, religious teachers or experts. Delete your past learnings of what you were taught and seek your own experiential knowledge. Nobody has the 100% truth, in their world nor in yours, and you may as well be the expert on yourself. Cerca trova. It’s OK to hit the “ALT” button. Seek ALT-ernative healers, thinkers and belief systems (religious or non-religious. It’s your lifestyle choice whether you wish to try alternatives such as meditation, crystals, Reiki, Buddhism, NLP, Hare Krishna, Wicca or naked yoga). Try something new before you judge it or talk about it. You may find a new empowering experience, or you may have a good story to tell at parties! It’s OK to take “Control” of your own life and your own destiny. Nobody can learn your lessons for you, and nobody can make your mistakes. Well-meaning friends and family may wish to protect you from failing; understand that most worthwhile discoveries have occurred whilst the discoverer was trying to do something else! Columbus found America whilst searching for India. Newton was

meditating under a tree when an apple accidentally fell on his head. Edison blew up more than a thousand objects in flames before he invented the lightbulb. Even modern-day business legend Sir Richard Branson has had over 200 corporate failures and billionaire Donald Trump has had four (4) bankruptcies. Get back “Control” by using “ALT”

Is your underwear good for you? with Amanda Rootsey flooded with bras that look gorgeous but are certainly not about comfort. Based in rural Victoria, Australian company Bodywise is determined to change that by providing wire-free bras that move and work with the body while also providing the necessary support. Owners of Bodywise, Jenn and Irene, believe that being comfortable as women is just as important, if not more important, than looking good. Of course this doesn’t mean that you can’t look good as well! While Bodywise’s wire-free bras don’t have as much hanger-appeal as a lacey number in the store, once they are on and fitted correctly, they do actually look great. Jenn and Irene kindly sent me one to try for myself and I’ve been wearing my new Bodywise bra for the past 2 days. I can honestly say that I no longer feel like ripping it off as soon as I walk in the door and am definitely a Bodywise convert. What I really wanted to know is, how can a wire-free bra provide the same amount of support as a regular bra? “Bodywise bras distribute the tension evenly over the whole surface area of the

nderwear is one of those things we throw on each morning (hopefully!) without much thought. It’s often the boring but welcomed gift at Christmas because, let’s face it, most of the time underwear shopping is boring! Considering how intimate underwear is on our bodies, perhaps it’s time we took a closer look. Underwear can be riddled with all sorts of chemicals and an incorrect fit, particularly with bras, can cause problems or discomfort. There are rumours around that underwire bras can be associated with health problems, particularly because there can be some restriction with lymphatic drainage, but these have not been substantiated with scientific research. For some women the pressure caused by an underwire can be uncomfortable or painful. But to find a wire-free bra can prove to be a challenge. The lingerie market is

With 100% transparency, the Bodywise team happily told me about the factory, assuring me that they have great communication with them and are satisfied that the workers are treated fairly, have opportunity for promotion and are happy. According to Lucy Siegle, author of the eco-fashion book ‘To Die For,’ we have more underwear than women at any other time in history. So taking a little bit of care with our purchases to ensure we buy quality garments that are comfortable and will last can also reduce our impact on the planet. Your Way to

hey say your health is your greatest wealth! As the new financial year is upon us, more businesses are considering exercise to help boost productivity. As businesses around Australia start to finalise their budgets for the 201314 financial year, Exercise is Medicine (EIM) Australia has urged all Senior Management and Human Resources Managers to factor workplace health into their finances. Exercise is Medicine Chair Chris Tzar said investing in work place health is proven to improve productivity. “Research shows that engaging in workplace health programs result in a 25 per cent reduction in sick leave, a 40 per cent decrease in workers compensation costs and a 24 per cent decrease in disability management costs,” Mr Tzar said. “This means for every $1 invested in

employee health, your company saves on average $5.81.*” “Other benefits include improved employee engagement and morale, increased concentration, improved team relationships, reduced stress levels and an improved corporate image.” To help employers promote and support physical activity in the workplace, EIM Australia in partnership with the Healthier Australia Commitment has released “Physical Activity in the Workplace: A Guide” and the “Be Active at Work Survey” employee program. “These tools can be used across all industries and company sizes to conduct a comprehensive needs assessment and evaluate progress,” Mr Tzar said. “The Guide gives recommendations on how to reduce sitting time at work, tips on promoting active modes of transport for employees and getting your workplace involved in community

physical activity events. The innovative Be Active at Work survey is very time and user-friendly, providing instant and personalised feedback for the employee and in depth data for the employer to measure outcomes and success.” “Studies show that low cardio fitness contributes to more deaths than obesity, smoking and diabetes combined, so as an employer you are really doing both yourself and your employees a favour by helping them become more active in the workplace.” Find out more about the survey and costs involved at: www. ‘Physical Activity in the Workplace: A Guide’ is available for free download from the EIM website www. and hard copies can be ordered from the Exercise and Sports Science Australia’s Shop

Bowen Therapy for Animals By Mel Grove

quine Muscle Release Therapy (EMRT) is a specific and effective form of Bowen Therapy mainly used for horses and pioneered by Alison Goward about twenty years ago. All animals, not just horses are sensitive to what’s happening in their owners lives and they pick up on their thoughts, feelings and emotions. Horses also have to deal with postural issues, past injuries etc of the person who rides them. It’s amazing how a horse only a few minutes after the person has been riding them, starts to copy or compensate for the rider’s imbalances. Over time, horses develop their own injuries and imbalances which can stay locked in their bodies. This is where complementary therapies like EMRT

can be very useful as it’s gentle and helps to balance, reset and heal the body. EMRT is a non-invasive manipulation of the soft connective tissue. It consists of a series of gentle rolling movements over key points in the body. The EMRT movements send signals via the central nervous system for the animal’s body to reset, balance and heal. It is holistic as it works on the physical, bio-energetic and mental/ emotional levels. Some conditions that may be assisted by EMRT in horses, dogs and cats are: • Muscle, tendon and ligament strain • Skeletal/structural problems • Lameness

• Uneven muscle development/muscle wastage • Mental and emotional problems • Degenerative and growth disorders • Infections/cold/flu/dry cracked hooves • Prevention and treatment of conditions Most horses, dogs and cats only need 2-3 three treatment sessions so this is great to consider for both old and young animals to help restore them to optimal health. Mel Grove is an animal communicator and a qualified practitioner in EMRT and Bowtech. Mel practices on the Sunshine Coast and nationally. For more information contact: (07) 54 789 669

Pert Pets: Biomedicine and Integrative Modalities for Radiant Health By Dr Elaine Cebuliak

hat has been astonishing (and outrageous) is the increasing rate of chronic diseases such as cancer, atopic (allergic) skin disease, arthritis and autoimmune dysfunction seen today in younger and younger pets. These things, which we now see daily, were not a common occurrence when I was a new graduate in the 1980s. Pet owners rightfully are asking serious questions about what goes in, on and around their pet to maximise their health care. Pet owners should look at the data linking free radical damage from environmental toxins to cancer and chronic disease, for their own health and for their pet’s future health. Toxins that are causing cancer include solvents, dyes (including food dyes that are found in many commercial pet foods!), pesticides and herbicides.* The current regime for excessive vaccinations is another load for our pets to cope with. Vaccines for parvovirus only came out in the later part of 1979 – so it’s a relatively new disease, and the regime of vaccinating for five to seven

different things annually followed. Prepackaged highly processed dry pet food with heat treated carbohydrates (google “Acrylamide”) foods and toxic long lasting “anti-” injectables and topical insecticides have become common place. Some of the aspects of education that we emphasise at our clinic are what we now understand about the harmful side effects of vaccines and toxins in food and in pesticides, plus the benefits of nutritional medicine. We have multiple handouts on nutritional, Western and Chinese herbal supplements. There are so many exciting healing options, like the Chinese formula liu wei di huang wan, which reverses renal failure, proved over and over from our blood tests (currently there is no effective treatment for this in western medicine, and it is a common cause of death especially in cats); yunnan baiao, and essential oil cistus, both of which stop bleeding, and we are able to use effectively during surgery – and many many more, we have found there are

effective herbal treatments for most diseases! Sometimes we use them in conjunction with Western drugs, they can work synergistically, assisting each other to be more effective, and the herbal medicine can reduce harmful side effects. Frequently they are effective on their own. Integrative Veterinary Medicine combines the best of both university qualified Veterinary Surgery and Medicine methods (including digital radiography, pathology, and blood chemistry diagnostics) with Science based orthomolecular supplementation (eg. Glucosamine and chondroitin, fish oil, magnesium, vitamins) and traditional Chinese and Western Herbal Medicine. If your pet requires surgical intervention, x-rays or advanced dentistry we have specialised training and instrumentation to proceed. If your pet has any chronic illness and you are interested in pursuing all avenues, it is recommended that you first seek professional veterinary help.

The Natural Healing Force By Dr Henry Stephenson

art of my training as an alternative health practitioner for animals is to understand that each body heals in the most perfect way that it can. So if I am to interfere, I must interfere by strengthening the healing force, not by stopping it or even slowing it down. This ultimate internal energy or vital healing force is smarter than any doctor or veterinary surgeon and more powerful than any medicine. What we need to do is to recognise what the healing force is trying to do and then help and strengthen it in its own function. I liken a symptom to seeing the fin of a whale coming out of the water. We can only see a fin, or sometimes a small part of the fin, but we know there is a whale underneath there. What sort of whale is it? We can try to strengthen the being based on the fin we are presented with, and we can also ask questions about other parts of the whale that have surfaced previously to get an understanding of the full picture. In life when things go our way

and there is no pressure or stress, our systems can maintain good order. But then when something changes, or we eat something unhealthy, or we get left in the boarding kennels, the same problem areas tend to resurface. Conventional medicine will cut off the fin or paint it a different colour so we cannot see it. If the presenting symptoms are taken away by anti-inflammatories or antibiotics, I find I have less of the whale to look at and help. True healing means watching the symptoms that come to the surface, understanding the nature of the whale, and then strengthening the whole animal. When animals heal from deep diseases their symptoms gradually become more superficial. Often I find that as bowel, liver or kidney issues improve, skin problems begin to surface. In animals, these skin problems then move, as the animal gains strength, from upper areas like the head and back to the belly and feet. Sometimes the ears are used like a waste-paper basket and

pour out some discharge during the healing process. When I treat animals for their liver disease or their kidney failure, they always feel better mentally: a violent cat will no longer scratch its owners, and an anxious dog will no longer want to escape when the builders use a nail gun next door. A simple example of this process is the treatment of fleas. This is an everyday issue for vets and conventionally involves the application of endless rounds of various poisons. When I treat an animal’s skin disease, I usually find that as the skin problem resolves and the animal becomes stronger, fleas are no longer so attracted to them, meaning that they no longer require so much of the chemicals. My understanding of true healing and cure is to honour every symptom and only attempt to strengthen the being. Disease is the healing force reacting against the individual’s growth on the planet.

Learning Swim to

H By Mary-Lou Stephens

ow can we swim in the mainstream and still frolic in the areas that we love, those deep and mysterious rock pools where the mainstream doesn’t flow? By playing the game. Why not? It’s just a game after all. The beauty of the mainstream is that everyone knows the rules. The trick is to colour between the lines while using your own palette. When my book was picked up by a mainstream publisher they wanted to change the title. Sex, Drugs and Meditation was too confrontational. Sex was okay. Drugs was not. They came up with a pleasant, inoffensive title and a pretty pastel cover. Trouble was neither the cover nor the name was indicative of the truth inside. Fortunately, with a little persuasion, they agreed to go back to the drawing board. Literally. A new designer was commissioned. Her work was bold and edgy. I loved her cover concepts with a passion. But what would my publisher think? I’ve always been on the edge creatively. I played in indie bands, wrote alt-country songs, before the phrase alt-country was even invented, and went to the alternative acting school, the one which fostered independent self-created work instead of slim blonde movie star smiles. Money was not my goal nor was it the result. I learnt to live on very little. It was a great space in which to live and play but when my last band broke up I knew it was time to move on. When working in radio became an option I

grabbed it with both hands, even though it meant diving into the mainstream. Commercial radio. Not my first choice but I worked hard, learnt a lot and eventually moved on to where I’d always wanted to be. The ABC. By then I had the skills that commercial radio demands and that the ABC wants. Now I get to swim in some interesting places indeed. For example in my series Modalities I explore the many ways of healing the body and soul that are available and interview the practitioners who facilitate them. Fascinating. Writing books grew from writing columns for a newspaper. A weekly discipline that I loved. Although it was mainstream media where I was given the freedom to be creative. Years of writing and rewriting have finally seen my book on the shelves. Despite diving into some very deep and mysterious waters the mainstream world has embraced it. You might see my meditation memoir in your local bookstore with my original title and a fabulous cover. How did that happen? Why did the publisher change their mind? The clever designer managed to swim in the mainstream but still remain edgy. A perfect balance. The best of both worlds. She played the game and we all won. Mary-Lou Stephens’ memoir Sex, Drugs and Meditation is available through Pan Macmillan.

Books, DVDs, . . . s a c i t s i l o H CDs and more... New “Inspired by Nature” gift book series

The Gratitude Guide: Living With Bliss

From photographer Steve Parish

By Dr Peter Dingle e

Pascal Press presents the new Inspired by Nature gift book series from Australian photographer Steve Parish. Each of the eight books showcases a selection of Steve’s most stunning nature photographs, complemented by inspirational passages written by Steve and his wife, Kate. Titled Joy, Creativity, Healing, Gratitude, Freedom, Acceptance, Consciousness and Compassion, these gorgeous books are perfect gifts for that special someone. They will be available July from retailers nationally.

Dr Dingle, one of Australia’s leading health motivational speakers has created this beautiful book to remind us that gratitude can and does change our lives. He has cleverly woven his own personal experiences, and life’s e’s work after 25 years as a researcher, educator, communicator and author into a book that is easy to digest and absorb.

About the “Inspired by Nature” series The eight books in this series offer insights into creating a rich and fulf lling life connected to the soul and nature. There is no handbook to life given to us when we enter this world. We are born into a diversity of life situations which we will accept or deny, growing and learning, adapting and searching — each of us f nding a path, each of us on a quest for our own reasons for being. This series aims to help you touch those moments when time stops and space is created, when emotion fades, stress disappears and your true self and life’s meaning are glimpsed. The eight titles in the series are Joy, Creativity, Healing, Gratitude, Freedom, Acceptance, Consciousness and Compassion.

This book is full of inspirational information, quotes and there are sections to integrate and write your own thoughts and responses down. Practicing being grateful on a daily basis improves every aspect of our lives, so simple yet so powerful. Let’s get the messages in this book out into the world.... “Grateful people are happier, less depressed, less stressed have fewer regrets and less envy or resentment and are more satisf ed with their lives.” Dr Dingle.
