It’s time for a Real Food Revolution,” says Kristie Ord, Raw Chef, Holistic Health Practitioner and Host/ Presenter of the 2015 Real Food Revolution. People are starting to become more health conscious and are information hungry around the detrimental effects that the western way of eating is having on our bodies. For years we have become more ‘convenience orientated’ and time poor which has seen a huge influx in refined, pasteurised, prepackaged and microwave foods with a decrease in homemade, wholefood and real food eating. We have been disconnected from what real food actually tastes like and what the sole purpose of eating is. Kristie explains, when choosing food to eat ask yourself, is this a healing and nourishing food or not? If the answer is no then simply think about how it could be replaced with something that is. For years Kristie lived with many health problems including bronchitis on a regular basis,

asthma, fatigue, chronic IBS and mal absorption. “I used to party, binge drink and eat fast foods on a regular basis. It wasn’t until I realised the effect this was having on my body that I started to make solid changes. My life now consists of nourishing and cleansing foods with cold pressed juices, herbs, superfood smoothies, raw treats, kombucha and plant-based, alkaline and easily digestible foods. I treat my body with respect and have been able to gain health and wellness through these changes,” says Kristie. Preservatives have been used in most foods in order to cater for mass consumption so food lasts longer. Our digestive systems are having to break down foreign ingredients and our livers are working overboard to eliminate toxic build-up. Our foods are acidic and even conventional fruits and vegetables can be stored for 12 months before we consume them. Needless to say nutrients and nourishment have been abolished with western foods. Bounty Bars RECIPE BIANCA SLADE

SLICE Ingredients: 2 cups desiccated coconut ½ cup raw cashews 2 tbsp honey ½ teaspoon concentrated natural vanilla extract Pinch of salt Method: Line a mini loaf tin with baking paper over-hanging the sides. Place the ingredients into your processor and blend at high speed until

the mixture resembles a smooth thick paste. Press the mixture firmly into the lined loaf tin and place in the fridge while you make your chocolate. CHOCOLATE Ingredients: 3 tbsp coconut oil 4 tbsp cacao or cocoa 2 tbsp honey Desiccated coconut to sprinkle on top

Method: Place the oil and honey into a large mug or small bowl and blend it together with a fork, then mix in the cacao or cocoa until it is smooth and looking delicious. You can also do this in a blender or processor. Spread the mixture evenly over your slice. Sprinkle the coconut over the top and return the slice to the fridge to set. Cut. Eat. Enjoy. W

e are a husband and wife team and the founders of Fresh Box Co, creating a local food community, with a mission to make a positive change to our Sunshine Coast community’s health through food and education. We have always been people who love good healthy food and enjoy entertaining and cooking for friends and family. For years before knowing each other, we both had been educating ourselves about the benefits of eating organic and the startling statistics on the high amount of pesticides, artificial hormones and preservatives etc in foods today. When Benny and I met, it finally gave us the confidence to follow our foodie passion! Living the dream: Healthy ‘fast casual restaurant’ opens GREEN BEES ORGANICS IS OPENING IN FEBRUARY IN WEST END AND IS THE CULMINATION OF A FIVE-YEAR JOURNEY FOR BUSINESS OWNER MARIA FAALAFI.

S

he’s not yet 30 but Maria has crammed a lot into her years, and the health issues which blighted much of her 20s have inspired her and her husband Luke to launch their own organic fast casual restaurant, Green Bees Organics. When she was in her mid-20s, while her peers were going out partying and building their careers, Maria felt so ill she could barely get out of bed – and it seemed no-one could help her. After months and months of countless tests and visits to doctors, specialists and hospitals without any answers, Maria decided to approach the natural way and finally found that the solution was simpler than she could have imagined – food. A new organic, gluten, dairy and sugar free diet helped her body heal, but as they both made the transition to the new clean diet, finding organic,

gluten, dairy and sugar free foods whenever they were out became a struggle. Inspired by their new diet and frustrated from not being able to find “real” healthy nutritious foods, they decided to launch a new business aimed at feeding people meals which not only tasted great but also nourished their bodies too! After four years of planning and trialling their food at various markets around Brisbane, Maria and Luke are ready to spread their positive message, and share their tasty guilt-free food, with the opening of sustainable, environmentally friendly café, Green Bees Organics. While preparing for the Green Bees opening, Maria has been running the Greenhive Kitchen for a year, hiring out her fully licensed commercial kitchen to start-up local businesses on an hourly

basis. Now her desire to help people continues with launching her own café. “We want to service people who want food which makes them feel good, keep their tastebuds happy and who want it quickly,” said Maria. Maria and Luke wish to surprise people with how tempting and delicious organic, healthy, gluten free food can be. “I’m so excited. I just want to connect with people, maybe people who felt like I did or who just want to get healthy but find it too overwhelming and hard to stick to it. When you constantly feel unwell, it’s a hard place to be and it feels like there is no escape sometimes. We come into our bodies as unconditional love and we leave our bodies as unconditional love and everything in between is an emotional and sensory experience,” she explained. When people are unable to make sense of an emotion, or unable to move through an emotion, Toni facilitates their journey back through different lifetimes and soul memories to see where they’ve experienced it before. Suddenly the familiarity of a feeling, seen playing out in a different story, in a different lifetime, allows people to understand why they are carrying this emotion or trauma through to their current lives and the understanding of that is profound in the healing process. Toni says that one of the biggest fears of humanity is death. A lot of our fears come back to that basic fear of dying one day, and that somehow we are running out of time or that we will miss out on life. Past life regression therapy gives people some peace around dying. When a client experiences a memory of a past life and recognises an emotion or connection with another soul, they are able to untangle themselves from fear and are better able to be present in their lives, now. Toni’s passion is encouraging change through experiencing real life stories. Everyone who passes through the Toni

ver since childhood I have never quite understood past lives or future as I have always understood them to be one. Now as an adult I can explain that if it is a past life and it is coming up now it is not past but now. It is present so you learn the lesson and move on to create a new outcome for the future. It can also be recalling past wisdom such as psychic surgery from Atlantis which you need to use now and continue on to the future. This is what happened for one family I was assisting during a Medical Intuitive session. Children of all ages express such wisdom and are so upfront with what they share. I can recall one family bringing their child to me and conveying their concerns of how their daughter kept speaking in a made-up language. They were embarrassed by it as the child would then make this ‘weird’ sound. Indigo, their six-year-old daughter would make patterns on the ground from rocks

and have a huge collection of them. She called them her ‘book’ and explained they have stories in them. I loved every minute of this session as what the parents were about to discover was that Indigo was tapping in to a past life of Atlantis. It was fabulous and yet misunderstood. So the next step was to educate the family about quantum mechanics, energy and past lives. Having taught this at Queensland University and to many corporate clients, it was easy for me to share it in a scientific way that made sense to them. Personally I was so excited as Indigo was sharing her gift so freely and easily and being her true self. She said quite assertively “Jean, I know why I am here and the grown-ups have to wake up. I get my information from the rocks as that is where we put it when the fires and water came years ago. Why can’t Mum and Dad understand my language and why can’t they read the rocks to me? I have to fix and help the

animals and set them free from the bad stuff.” I asked her about the bad stuff. She replied, “The animals are forgetting who they are and then fighting with each other. Then they will get sick and they will hurt each other like the people do.” I had tears rolling down my face in sheer delight and I felt so honoured by her wisdom, insight and recollection. Now she was speaking telepathically with me. The detail and images she showed me were brilliant and recalled those times too. She had accessed Atlantis and could not define if it was past, present or future. I could relate to this child in every way and felt the same. The patterns she was making on the floor were crystal grids and they were accessing other dimensions and knowledge of how to help heal the animals. My heart sung as this was incredible. Now to educate and inform Indigo’s parents. I explained that there is not time or space in quantum mechanics. There were

Millennium Children Millennium Children lots of diagrams on the whiteboard in my office and examples of taking them back to their childhood to connect with what Indigo was sharing and experiencing. What we perceive as imaginary is really our reality and reality is perception and experience. Indigo was not making things up, she was not autistic as they were querying, she was highly intelligent and accessing information just like Einstein. As I used this example, this seemed to allow the parents to feel more relaxed. I got a call from Indigo’s parents six months after our initial session. Indigo had taught her parents about the spiritual world and they began to study this work. As a family they commenced voluntary work rescuing animals. The language Indigo speaks is called the Language of Light and her sounds were healing tones that allow the animals to feel at calm and peace. Mum and Dad have since bought Indigo many crystals and she naturally and confidently lays these on the animals

they rescue. She lays her hands on the animals and has been teaching her parents. My heart sings at this and I am so excited how Indigo has woken her parents to another way and recalled her past life where she was a High Priestess to the land animal kingdom of Atlantis. But it is not past for Indigo, it is in the now and it will affect the future too. She is accessing potentiality and knowing all is in the now. This is so sacred and a gift for me and her parents. Creating relationships that work!

T

he majority of relationships we see on the planet function like this: we see the possibilities with another person, then we add do’s and don’ts, should and should nots, upsets, past traumas, future expectations, and a whole bunch of other things that result in us pretty much disappearing underneath it all. We often find ourselves re-creating the same kind of disharmonious relationships over and over with different people. Gary Douglas, the founder of Access Consciousness, suggests some pragmatic tools to help create more expansive and joyful relationships of all kinds: 1. Ask ‘what would it take to destroy and uncreate my relationship every day?’ What if every day you could wake up and say to the person beside you, “hello, who are you, and what adventure will we have today?” If you were willing to erase the past and start anew each day, you would be

more present in your relationships. You would have more of a sense of wonder at the possibilities with each other, rather than seeing through the filters of judgments, decisions and conclusions you have created based on the past. If you gave up past points of reference in your relationships, it would also be much harder to create the upsets you currently have! 2. Being present in relationship means not judging you or anyone else. Why not choose gratitude instead? When we judge ourselves or anyone else, we put up barriers to seeing what is great about us and the people in our lives. Judgment cannot survive where gratitude thrives. Look at what you are grateful for in your relationship and in the other person. Look at what you are grateful for about you. It’s amazing what can change in your relationships when you add more gratitude into the computation. 3. Give up your expectations and

projections about your relationships. Is your partner ever really going to put the toilet seat down, or did you know from the beginning they would probably always leave it up? If you are willing to give up your expectations of another person, you will never be disappointed and you will always be surprised and delighted when they do deliver. A relationship that truly works is one where you are totally ok with them as they are, where you don’t need to change them, or yourself, to be with them. The problem with clinging to the past is we make it so significant that we project it into our future so that the same old results show up. Navigating Tragedy WORDS MICHELLE LIGHTWORKER

I

n my line of work I often see people who have been through trauma, physical illness or an addiction/ mental health rock bottom. I have also experienced events in my life that one could deem as tragedies. For instance, my brother murdered my niece and two nephews when I was in my early 30s. One of the most powerful ways I’ve navigated through difficult times was to change my point of view. Even the word tragedy has a negative connotation. I hesitated to use it as the name of this article, however it was important. Often that is how we see events that have created trauma in our lives. We only need to take a look around at the events that have happened across the globe regarding terrorism to label these as tragedies. We also have the daily news that splashes murder, crime and domestic violence at our doorstep daily. The stabbing of eight children in Cairns late last year is a fresh reminder we are only ever one neighbour away from shocking and disturbing occurrences. How do we change our minds that these occurrences are no longer tragedies? This is the golden question. One suggestion is to see everything as

connected and to understand that we all learn something from every event we experience. Ultimately there is no right or wrong, only an opportunity for learning. This begs the question, why do we need to learn? We are always evolving. Life itself in every cell, membrane and thought evolves every second. We are forever changing. We can choose to view situations as catalysts for our own learning. Then, they are no longer tragedies. We reinvent them as learning experiences. But how good are we at this? That is the real question. Sometimes our learning experiences prompt us to dig deeper about our beliefs. Sometimes these experiences poke us to reach out and connect with others. Whatever the experience, there is one thing for sure, we will never be the same again. We get to decide how we want to view life. We get to decide the kind of person we want to be. Sure, we can live the life of the forever punished victim. That’s easy. Wherever we turn, we can view anything as tragic. Or, instead, we can view life as an endless opportunity. The death of my niece and nephews was a huge prompt for me to

go forward in my psychic development. Contact with them encouraged me and taught me the work I now teach others. Without this event, I simply wouldn’t have written the Lightworker Practitioner Training. Everything we do will also be teaching someone something about themselves. They are on their learning journey too. This makes our lives easier, freeing us from fear and perfectionism. If we fear we will hurt people if we do what we know is true for ourselves, we only prevent others from their own learning. The only way to recover from the barrage of negativity that terrorises us and is escalating daily, is to feel safe within ourselves. We need to take back our power and step out of blame. Blame only hands our focus and power over to those that we are fixated on. So, let’s make today a new day. Let’s not wait for life to be perfect before we are happy, at peace and settled. Let’s transform our thoughts on tragedies of the past. Let’s create positive thoughts in how we live our present. We create the future that we want, right now. lightworkerreflections.com

T

he human brain is a wonderful thing. Our ability to remember past experiences helps us to plan for the future e.g. “that restaurant was wonderful, let’s book it for Dad’s birthday” or “We got food poisoning from that place, let’s never go there again”. Our cognitions about the past and the future allow us to enjoy our privileged position at the top of the food chain. Remembering the past and imagining the future is not only useful, it can also make for a lovely pastime and who hasn’t lost large chunks of time daydreaming about the coming weekend or reminiscing about the summer holiday last year? Our brains are so sophisticated that even when our minds are in the past or the future we can operate on ‘automatic pilot’ where our bodies may be performing one task in the present moment such as driving or showering but our mind is somewhere else. This ability comes with a price tag.

The skill of having our bodies in the present moment while our minds are in the past or future can become a double-edged sword when we spend more time ruminating on issues gone by or catastrophising about future events that are yet to unfold than we do in the reality of the here and now. Life can literally pass us by while we replay old hurts or imagine new ones. A wealth of research has shown that spending more time with the body and mind connected in the present moment or practising the skill of mindfulness has a wide range of benefits. These include; increased activity in the area of the brain associated with positive emotion – the pre-frontal cortex – which is generally less active in people who are depressed; and changes in brain wave activity in areas of the brain linked to emotional regulation which can help with managing anxiety, stress, depression and insomnia to name but a few. mindfultherapy.com.au

Tips for Mindfulness

Pick any routine activity that you would normally perform on ‘automatic pilot’ such as washing the dishes, walking or showering.

Bring greater awareness to the activity by focussing your attention on the present moment experience.

You might notice the temperature of the water or the sensation of water against skin, you could listen to the sound of the water running. If you choose to bring greater awareness than remain ‘in your head’ or on ‘automatic pilot’ you might really look at the shapes, shades and colours around you in your environment. Your may notice the various tones and pitches within the noise from the traffic.

As you allow yourself to notice what you might not normally acknowledge you may experience intrusions or commentary in the form of thoughts. We can permit ourselves to simply notice these too and gently redirect our attention to the present experience.

t has come to my attention how often the past is looked to for answers and guidance for many matters, including nutrition and health. In recent times, a very bright light has been shone on the Paleolithic era, with many glorifying the “Caveman Diet”, founded on plant-based fats, animal protein and low-starch vegetables. The confusion lies in why this particular period remains so glorified when knowledge of today tells us that the exalted caveman was not a picture of perfect health (especially with all those parasites!). I do agree with many of the founding concepts of this diet; however I also view it as a perfect example of trying to squeeze into that one-size-fits-all dress that just doesn’t sit quite right. Brilliant eating habits highlighted by the Paleo diet include high protein content to keep one fuller for longer as well as repair and build muscle

tissue, whole vegetables and fruits, and restriction of processed sugars, alcohol and dairy. Suddenly, that one-size-fitsall is making me feel very separated from the concept of “all”. What about legumes and grains? Why do they get such a bad review when they are such a great source of vegetarian protein, nucleic and amino acids? A rich history of fermented foods, including miso, sauerkraut, kefir and kombucha, have also made a comeback into healthy lifestyles with their benefits in gastrointestinal health being attributed to the establishment of healthy gut flora (and all the cascading advantages that come from a correctly functioning gastrointestinal system). r Daniel Aronov has a degree in Biomedical Science which gave him a passion for evidence and scientific research. After his first degree, he studied medical science for four years and is on his way to becoming a general practitioner. He discovered mindfulness one day during a conversation with his wife, a clinical psychologist, who teaches mindfulness at a clinic in Melbourne. He kept hearing more about mindfulness and after months of being curious, he finally got his wife to run through a guided meditation with him. After that he fell in love with the practice of mindfulness. Since that day his passion for evidence has led to his interest in the evidence behind mindfulness and he has also made his PhD on this topic. Mindfulness meditation can be a really tricky thing. is, it can be tricky to keep your attention in the present moment. The one main thing that we find difficult is the personal judgment, when our thoughts get carried away and our mind starts wandering. When he teaches this, he actually encourages this wandering mind. If you can’t practise for a long time, he suggests to focus on your breathing and keep going until you have three mindfulness cycles. A mindfulness cycle is where you allow your attention to wander, you then acknowledge this and bring yourself back to the mindful breathing. This is what he refers to as having three episodes or cycles. Once you have experienced three cycles of mindfulness meditation, then you can stop for the day. He recommends this for people who don’t find it easy to incorporate 15 or 20-minute sitting-down meditations. We then went on to discuss anxiety, which these days seems to be more of a health concern. He is not sure that there has been a rise in anxiety or if it is just a lot easier to diagnose, with a rise in media coverage. Dr Aronov believes that a GP is an important part of an holistic approach to anxiety and depression. There are many different treatment options out there.

Practising mindfulness has also been shown to be beneficial for doctors in their everyday work life, especially to ease stress.

Just like cognitive behaviour therapy and medications are a treatment for anxiety, mindfulness is now a treatment and has been shown to be just as successful as both of these therapies. So his advice for people who experience or suffer from anxiety is trialling mindfulness as a different approach. Whether it is an app on your phone or you download a CD, or whether it’s doing it regularly with a one-onone psychologist, he believes that mindfulness is a great way to relieve certain health concerns. It’s about trying out new things and seeing what works best for you and your body. However he does express in severe cases that people do need to consider medications or suggests that people perform better with medications. Interestingly, Monash University now has mindfulness-based stress reduction programs ingrained into its first and second year medicine courses. So they

undergo formal training and mindfulness for themselves and they undergo lectures on the evidence behind it as well. He also touched on the research/ evidence behind using mindfulness as a way to create better patient outcomes or better relationships with patients. Practising Mindfulness has also been shown to be beneficial for doctors in their everyday work life, especially to ease stress. At the St Vincent Hospital where he works in the emergency department, they run a mindfulness meditation every single Wednesday… to support this stressful environment. Dr Aronov explained that the first ever paper on mindfulness in western literature was only released in 1982, “so it’s only been around for 30 years…” It may have taken a while to catch on however he goes on to say “the body of evidence is expanding, expanding and expanding” and he believes it’s going to continue to do so as more and more discoveries through science are made. O

ur minds control our experience of past, present and future. This is what I’ve noticed in clinical practice when people are ‘stuck’ in past or future thoughts: thinking about the past excessively leads to the heavier emotions such as guilt, shame, regret, bitterness and anger. Thinking about the future excessively produces anxiety manifesting as worry/panic, obsessive planning (trying to control outcomes) and self-doubt. Neither are helpful states of mind! The past is where we dwell when our minds are trying to make meaning of whatever has occurred. The past provides the information we need to learn lessons, make different choices and take responsibility for our actions. However the egoic mind in us all wants to create stories about how and why things happen the way they do in life. A variety of beliefs get formed along the way, influenced by the messaging

and support (or lack thereof) in our environments. The future is where we project what we want for our lives. Humans spend a lot of time imagining futures. If future thinking is pessimistic, people tend to experience doubt and confusion and may avoid pursuing their goals/desires. Our minds try to protect us from pain by reminding us of what went ‘wrong’ before, assuming it will happen again. Try subverting that by consciously looking forward with hope and trust – it generates better feelings, and positive projections are just as valid in the range of possibilities available to us in any moment. And remember it’s all imagined anyway; none of it’s real yet! The present is where life is happening, right now. With mindfulness of the present moment, we can notice what our body and mind are communicating to us and use that to direct our actions. When we aren’t in the present moment, we are running on our unconscious programs and beliefs, and are much more likely to

make choices that don’t feel great to us. Staying present, and observing what our senses are conveying, is one of the most powerful tools available to us for long-term happiness and connection with others. Our minds move forward and back in time constantly. A useful question that I use and encourage my clients to use is: “When is my mind?” Asking yourself that question immediately brings the observing mind into the present and helps you identify whether you are ruminating in the past, or the future. Neither time zones are particularly helpful for long periods of time, because we are powerless to change the past, and cannot know the future. Therefore mindfully keeping your attention in the present is not only the wiser choice, it’s economical on your energy too. Now is the moment of power, be in it! to start something new how your mind automatically pulls up past references to determine what may or may not happen in the future? The emotional brain acts as the “filing cabinet” of our life, recording the emotional response at the time in order to respond to any event in the present, based on those previous perceptions. When the sights, sounds, feelings, smells or perceptions in the present match a past event the brain sets off the fight/flight/freeze response. W

e live in a society of never ending tasks, high level stress, alarms, emails, reminders and demands. Every day we see patients with burn out, depletion, chronic fatigue, weight problems and digestive disease. A combination of these symptoms is very common. So what actually causes so many of us to end up like this? When your body is exposed to stress, whether it be physical or mental, it is flooded with two hormones: adrenaline and cortisol. Both of these put you in the “fight or flight” response. Your pupils dilate, your heart races, you become tense, thoughts are short lasting, memory reduces and you are on edge. Being in the fight and flight response for too long can lead to feeling drained and depleted. What does this do to your h ormones? I call it the ‘pregnenolone steal!’ What’s that? Pregnenolone is like a mother hormone, it can be used to make cortisol or it can be used to make reproductive hormones. When you

are stressed your body goes down the cortisol pathway and then you can end up with hormone imbalance. Cortisol may cause blood to be shunted away from the digestive system. This can cause peristalsis (bowel movements) to change and your nutrient absorption may possibly drop. This in itself can cause energy to drop, sleep quality to reduce, changes in skin, and lowered mood. Much of your serotonin production (happy neurotransmitters) happens in the gut, so any sort of digestive disturbance could potentially result in reduced neurotransmitter production. Many digestive enzymes are made in the gut, if you find that some days you can handle food and the next day you can’t, it could be a reflection of your stress response. Stress alters our body’s ability to digest food. And it is always harder to lose weight when you are stressed. Cortisol makes it difficult to lose weight, and you will hold more fat predominantly

around the tummy. So no matter how much exercise you do, the weight will be hard to reduce. Cortisol levels could alter your melatonin levels (the sleeping hormone). If this happens your leptin levels (a hormone that tells you to stop eating) reduces, so you will feel more hungry and more likely to eat carbohydrate or sweets and unable to control your portion size. The increased carbohydrate content then increases insulin, which promotes inflammation and causes another spike in cortisol. See how everything in the body is connected? Stress and digestion go hand in hand. I never just treat stress, you always need to dig deeper. The body needs balance, when one thing increases another decreases, when one nutrient is deficient for a pathway it will be ‘robbed’ from another and the imbalance continues. Lyme Diseaseis here in Australia! WORDS AMINA EASTHAM-HILLIER, ND

L

yme Disease is a serious debilitating condition that is often undiagnosed and unrecognised in Australia. This tick-borne disease was discovered in Lyme, Connecticut, USA 1975, following a mysterious outbreak of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. However reports of Borrelia DNA have been found in a frozen ‘iceman’ dating back to 5300 years ago! It is now increasingly common in North America, Europe and has been introduced to Australia possibly via deer ticks. Lyme Disease infections can be caused by spirochete bacteria e.g. Borrelia burgdorferi and other bacteria such as Bartonella, Mycoplasma or parasites e.g. Babesia. An increasing number of patients are being tested positive for Borrelia bacteria and tick borne co infections in Australia, although they have never left the country! Some of the most common areas of possible infected ticks are the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, and the Northern New South Wales border. There are also a

number of cases in South Australia and Perth. Symptoms can appear within a few hours of being bitten by a tick in the form of a circular ‘bullseye’ rash, but not in all cases. Patients may, soon after, experience flu like symptoms, chronic fatigue, joint pain, memory loss, anxiety, headaches, depression and digestion imbalances, just to name a few. Often these signs are missed, patients are denied treatment and deteriorate over years being misdiagnosised with conditions such as MS, Fibromyalgia, Parkinsons, etc. In my clinical experience as a naturopath and nutritionist, I have found herbal and nutritional medicine to be imperative in the treatment of Lyme Disease, in conjunction with conventional treatment. After observing and cataloging hundreds of hours of Lyme cases and symptoms I have observed significant symptom patterns coinciding with the cyclical nature of the bacteria infection. This has helped me create accurate

clinical diagnosis and specific treatment plans. Herbal medicine is highly beneficial for their anti-microbial properties, minimising side effects of medications, easing Herxheimer reactions (the dieoff of bacteria), strengthening immune systems, nervous systems and adrenal glands. Proteolytic enzymes are effective to denature the biofilm of the bacteria and detoxification is also imperative to support patients. Each patient receives personalised prescriptions since Lyme can affect sufferers in many ways. I have over 400 documented case studies from all over Australia of which I have personally managed and will soon publish my book on Natural Therapies for Lyme Disease. W

hether you want to achieve business goals, increase your income, improve your work-life balance, lose weight or give up smoking you will need a plan. “Fail to plan and you plan to fail,” they say. You’re an intelligent, aware person, you sincerely want to achieve what you set out to do and goal setting seems so simple, right? Successful people do it all the time so there must be a way. Those successful people aren’t any different from you except they have the knowledge of how to set goals that are right for them. Goals that are right for you are aligned with your personal values and core needs. In my early days of goal setting and failed New Year’s resolutions, I set a goal to go to Nepal with one of my four children. I had studied Life Coaching and I knew how to set achievable goals, so it was a sure thing. As the time got closer I realised I wasn’t taking the actions to make it happen. I kept procrastinating. I didn’t have

the money and I thought it was fear that was stopping me from following through. When I learned about my values and core emotional needs, it became very clear to me why I wasn’t achieving my goal. So armed with new knowledge I set a new goal to go to Thailand with all four of my children. That year, the money manifested easily, everything flowed smoothly and we all went to Thailand and had a great time. The Thailand goal was aligned with my highest value of “family” and my core need for love and connection which includes all four of my children. That’s why we didn’t make it to Nepal; I couldn’t leave three of the children behind. What are your values? Your values are what you truly stand for, what you believe is going to make you feel the way you want. They are the unconscious drivers to all of your decisions. Values determine how you will travel on the journey of life towards your goals. If you value beauty – you

will take the scenic route. If you value adventure – you may use a 4WD and take the road less travelled. They are unique to you and the source of your motivation. The six core emotional needs as discovered by Anthony Robbins are: certainty, variety, significance, love and connection, growth and contribution. If you meet these needs resourcefully you add to your emotional bank account. If you meet them poorly you burn up your emotional energy and feel depressed, depleted and unmotivated. You’re always choosing either toxic or healthy fuel for your emotional body. Before you get too far into the New Year and realise that you could have planned better, spend some time discovering your unique values and core emotional needs and set some goals that you are destined to achieve.

he beginning of each year is a great time to get pen to paper and write down your goals and the things you want to create for yourself in the year ahead! The clearer you become in what you want and hold your focus there, the more they will begin appearing in your reality. Morning time is a great time to look at them. Each morning when you wake up, look at your list and pick one that grabs your attention the most. Personally I love to self-muscle test one. Take a few moments to imagine it has already manifested. Notice how it makes your body feel. Is there doubt or is it easy to see and imagine? If it is easy to see and imagine and feels light and happy, take it into your day with a knowing and belief it is unfolding around you. Choose to think about it as often as you can. Your thoughts create your reality! Look out for signs showing you it is unfolding, they will be there! When you sense them, recognise them with

gratitude and excitement. If after visualising your selected goal your feel doubt, hesitation or uncertainty, that is an indication that a negative belief is in the way. You can change this. Ask yourself something like, “What beliefs do I need to have to support this being in my life?” Write those down and create an “I AM or I HAVE affirmation to support that. Take that affirmation into your day. Give your mind this as a focus point in your day. The one big ‘Not-So-Secret’ secret of a happy relationship WORDS MARY-LOU STEPHENS

R

elationships. They’re a source of endless joy and angst. We might be deliriously happy for a while but then the gloss wears off and we’re stuck with reality. Most people get into relationships expecting they’ll feel better about themselves and their lives when they have someone to love them. We will meet the man or woman of our dreams and they will fulfil us, be our everything and we’ll both be deliriously happy for ever. When that’s not the case what do we do? Often we blame the other person. The thinking might go like this – I don’t feel fantastic anymore so it must be the other person’s fault: they’re not good enough, good looking enough, rich enough, smart enough. A solution? Move on. The next relationship will bring all the things I need. And many people chase the high that new “love” brings. Another solution might be to stay in that relationship because, very conveniently, we now have someone

else to blame for everything we don’t like about our lives. If it wasn’t for them and all their flaws, our life would be wonderful. Love promised a perfect life but I still don’t have enough money and have no friends. Life didn’t deliver. It’s all their fault. How convenient not to have to look at our own stuff and stuff-ups. Those arguing, bickering, bitter couples are all locked into the blame game. Are we too afraid to say “What’s my part in this? Why do I feel so unhappy? What can I do to change this?” Being in a relationship that works means asking all those questions of yourself and then doing something about them. A something that doesn’t involve running away, getting divorced and making all the same mistakes in your next relationship. In short: own your own crap. If something annoys you in your relationship, look at your part in it. Then look at why it annoys you. It’s your responsibility. It’s so easy to blame everyone else for everything. I know I spent most of my life doing it.

My husband called me on it early on in our relationship. I hated him for it at the time because it meant I really had to look at why I always played the victim. Sometimes I want to be weak and helpless and have someone else to blame for everything that’s wrong in my life. But if that’s true where does it leave me? What can I learn or improve from that position of helplessness? Playing the victim may feel easy at the time but it’s a cop-out. In the long term, it kept me stuck and miserable. Now when I feel bad and I want to blame him, I have the tools to turn it around, knowing and really understanding that I am responsible for my own misery and my own happiness. I take him out of the equation and own my own crap. That, my friend, is the one big not-so-secret secret of a happy relationship. Own your own crap. What are you waiting (weighting) to create in 2015? WORDS SHAUNA TEAKEN

I

f you don’t have all the money you’d like and/or you are carrying extra weight on your body – the two things just might be related!!! A strange title for an article about Body Bliss – but money is about your body. You the being don’t use food, clothing, shelter, a car or a smart phone. Your body does! And bodies love fun, ease and pleasure. A happy body responds with youthful energy and appearance! Money follows fun, too! I have a confession to make – I have never held a 9-5 job in my life. I have had what many people would call a charmed life BUT… As a struggling uni student 35 years ago, I started my first business with no capital and no real plan. I had enthusiasm, though! I printed up some hand-drawn flyers. I rented a hall. Seventy-five people showed up the first night and I made three times my weekly student allowance! That little business (6 hours per

week) ran for six years and brought me, in today’s terms, between $1-2000 A WEEK. Since then I have had maybe 10-15 businesses in very different fields – some successful, some horrible, costly ‘failures”. So what? I just kept creating! I found the things that come easy to me, that other people apparently find hard, and I did them. What comes easily to you, that you are not valuing enough? There was a common thread – I had to do something I enjoyed, was enthusiastic about, and which gave me the freedom to do all the other things I loved doing. You see, at the age of 20, I knew enough about myself to know what I required on a daily basis to make my life worth living and keep me well and happy. I actually thought I wasn’t ‘strong’ or ‘consistent’ enough to be an employee for very long. I made a demand of myself that no matter what it took, I was going to set up my life to work for me.

What would work for you? What would be fun for you? Things I required and still require – plenty of time to exercise, walk, go to the beach, read, write, draw, daydream, time and money to study all the things I’m interested in. What would you like more time and money to do? Personal growth was and is vital to me. The sustainablity of the planet. I’ve had two natural healing centres. What is vital to you? I knew I needed plenty of change – I get bored easily. I’ve started and ditched two uni degrees, businesses, sold houses, moved lots of times. It may be different for you, but that’s the point. HB: How would you describe the work you do? Tony: I endeavour to communicate with the spirit world to bring through evidence of survival after physical death. Evidence can consist of specific pieces of information which hopefully prove the message is from a certain person and also memories of shared experiences. The very interesting part for me goes beyond this when the spirit communicator prove their continued existence by conveying what they are doing now in spirit (which often correlates to an interest in life) and also what they are aware of relating to their living family since passing. It can all be very healing for the recipient of any message. HB: How does contact with the spirit world assist us to heal? Tony: So often things go unsaid in life, not only the dramatic stuff of revelations but sometimes just the simple things like

‘I love you’ or ‘I’m sorry’. Mediumship can rectify this, and help people move on from only remembering the negative and things unsaid or undone, to cherishing the happy memories and the positives. Also, just the simple switch to believing you will one day be reunited with those you loved and still love can be a revelation in not only how you handle your grief but how you view and live your own life. Accepting we are eternal is a life changing event. Mediumship and a good evidential message will not take away your grief but it can soften the edges and change your outlook. HB: What changes do you see in people’s lives? Tony: For many it’s like the light has come back into life. We all have or will at some time be affected by losing someone we love and adore and at the time it seems our own life has come to an end and we cannot contemplate

going forward. I’ve seen people go from this to getting their lives back on track, and for some it can inspire them to experience new things. I know of many whom have gone on to raise monies for charities or campaigned for things they hold dear. The most common though is how people change their outlook to life and living, taking responsibility for their words, actions and even thoughts, knowing there is more to us than just this physical existence. HB: What message do you have for our readers for 2015? he reality for most of us in today’s modern world is to travel from one box to the next. We sleep inside, we eat inside, we step into our cars and drive to the office, we drive home from the office, finish our day relaxing around the house and do it all over again. Our modern lifestyle has developed to the point where going outside has become an “option”. A whole week may come and go without ever feeling the sun’s rays on our skin or fresh air filling our lungs. We have been conditioned to ‘fear’ the sun so much so that we have tipped the scales way out of balance resulting in an increase in vitamin D deficiency. For years, doctors have repeatedly told us that the sun is “bad” for us and that it causes cancer. The fact is, the majority of all living things requires sun to survive. The key is balance, and using your common sense to avoid getting sunburned. The sun has a remarkable effect on your holistic health and happiness, and

is our best source of vitamin D, a prehormone that: controls calcium levels in the blood thus maintaining strong bones, muscles and teeth; is involved in making hundreds of enzymes and proteins which are vital for preventing a number of diseases; strengthens the immune system; and has anti-cancer properties. Research shows that sunshine has a significant effect upon mental health and wellbeing and is recommended in the treatment of depression; for treating psoriasis, eczema and acne; and for regulating circadian rhythms (our internal body clock that when disrupted can result in sleep disorders). On the flip side, it is important to keep in mind that too much sun exposure does have consequences: an increase in the speed of skin ageing and the potential risk of melanomas. So it’s all about finding the “right” balance for you, taking into consideration your age, skin colour, body weight, season of the year, and the latitude of where you live. Personally, I like the idea of delaying

wrinkles for as long as naturally possible, so I enjoy the sunshine in the early or late hours of the day, avoiding direct sun exposure between the hours of 11am and 3pm. I

am often asked by clients, “What can I do to improve my skin health?” Apart from the obvious answer of adopting a good natural skincare regime, I also immediately turn to internal health and diet, as modern natural medicine is increasingly finding connections between the ways in which our internal self manifests itself on the outside. This applies particularly to conditions such as dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis, which are often seen by the sufferer as a cross they have to bear with little explanation, when in fact there is help out there if they are prepared to look for it! Keeping skin looking fresh and supple is dramatically helped by the following guidelines: 1. Stay hydrated – not just at this time of year when humidity saps huge amounts of moisture from our skin, but on a regular basis. This is done most effectively through drinking good quality water, and also by adding

coconut water into the mix, as it is very high in electrolytes, the essential minerals which we lose daily. 2. Eat good fats – our skin has a lipid (fat) layer, which needs to be fed regularly. Oily fish, avocados, nuts, coconut milk, flaxseeds, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, all contain the kinds of fats which our skin is crying out for. 3. Increase mineral levels in our bodies – magnesium, zinc, silica, sulphur and selenium are all vital for skin health, and are often missing in our daily diets (even healthy ones) as they are very deficient in our food chain. O

ne belief that has always kept me going is the belief in true love and soul mates. It is a knowing that I have felt deep within myself for all of time and not because I grew up surrounded by perfect couples or that I believed in fairy tales. This knowing strengthened when I would see and meet people that I had a deep connection with and would remember them from other places in time. This belief though didn’t have me

matched with my most compatible soul mate – my divine life partner from the get go. In 2006 I was getting the push from my girlfriends to call in for a soul mate; they told me all I needed to do was write a list and put it somewhere safe. As I had already become aware that I was creating my reality and manifestations were appearing all around me I decided to give it a shot. What I did not know at the time was that the subconscious does not understand the term “not” so my list contained all of the things I did want along with all of the things I didn’t want in a partner. I received someone who was all of those things. There was a soul mate connection so I was able to feel a love for this man. He bought me flowers, and helped maintain a spotless house but he was also extremely controlling, a drug addict, an alcoholic and used me for everything I had. I now have an understanding of how fears work and realise that I manifested my biggest fears in that relationship. It was with this man which I had become blinded by love, that I was unable to see the truth of it. I also had fully committed myself to him and his children 100%. So for the second time in my life I was unable to see a way out alive. Until I came to the realisation – I have free will – which in-turn created a situation for me to leave, it wasn’t that easy, but I had the support of family and

friends which prevented me from going back. After leaving this relationship late 2009, I was very broken; I was afraid of my own shadow and fearful of my life. I had also gone bankrupt to sever all ties the fastest way possible. My self-esteem was at an all-time low. I was depressed and also suffered anxiety. I had to rebuild myself from what felt to be from below ground. I had attracted to me a soul mate who would come and go over about 10 years re-appearing in my life at times when I needed saving. I released him energetically from this obligation, deciding that I was going to create a life in which I didn’t need to be rescued from and cleared all subconscious programming around being a victim. It was after these relationships that I really began to heal myself and in the process began to understand more about myself, the subconscious mind and life lessons. I believe that everyone has many soul mates – not all of these soul mates will be compatible – as I found out. It is the birthright of each and every person to love and be loved completely. The level of evolvement that you are at when you call for your most compatible soul mate will also dictate that too of your soul mate. You will

draw to each other for both positive and negative things in common. When you reach the point of truly loving yourself you will activate something in your heart chakra which will call for them. They do not complete you, it is important that you are whole first. You complement each other. At the beginning of 2011 in an out of the blue moment I called for my most compatible soul mate, someone I could grow with, on a soul level I knew exactly who I was calling for as I called for him in such detail. Within 12 hours he was in my life. I believe our coming together was a part of our divine timing as was the birth of our son. This relationship brought with it much joy in areas I was ready to accept – and it shone a light on areas where things needed to change within myself. There is also the ability to grow together throughout time. In my work I have witnessed the coming together and growth of many true loves, I have also seen couples who were in the process of breaking up that after doing some belief work and manifesting for their soul mates found themselves so deeply in love with each other like never before – realising their special connection and compatibility. evolvewitheta.com

hat more can I say. The natural world, animals and birds, are, and always have been, part of my being. I grew up in Snowy Mountain countryside, exploring and riding horses amid spectacular mountains, valleys and never-ending vistas as far as the eye could see, no man-made obstacles to mar the view. How could I not live a life of constant wonder at creation. Life moves on – love, marriage, family, commitments – different time, place and space. Family grows up. New ventures are embraced. At age 60 opportunity knocks again. A neighbour has a little Welsh mountain pony needing exercise and work. Yes, I will gladly spend time with her. Then an incident. The little pony tries to climb an embankment whilst I am riding and falls heavily backwards onto me, scrabbling and falling a few times. Is it wise to continue with such risks evident? Timely reminder… friends have accidents, one tripping on a garden hose, another falling in a hole, a third tripping on a cracked pavement? Life IS risk. Why would I even consider not continuing to

live a life that fills me with joy, pleasure and energy? That feeds my soul, lights my life, reminds me I am connected with the very life force of all creation. No contest. And so the journey of exploration and play continues. I turn 70 this year and the magic continues. Limitless possibilities surprising us every day. We are now enjoying time together, along with our other animals and horses, riding around the farm, gazing out over pleasant vistas, playing at liberty and just being – in constant awe at the time, space and place we have in this moment. Make anxiety a thing of the past for your pet WORDS ASHLEIGH ATFIELD, Veterinary Technician and Head Nurse

I

have found many of my colleagues don’t realise how much easier life can be if they can calmly, and effectively handle their patients. Clients are often amazed at how much anxiety they are passing onto their pets, without even meaning to. At our clinic it’s my job to teach staff, clients and pets how to be calm. Signs of fear or anxiety can include: • Ears back • Vocalising, restlessness • Tense face and body • Wide eyes, big pupils • Rapid eye movements • Tail down and still (dull/painful) • Tail flicking side to side (irritated) • Hunched over posture (pain/fear) • Look out of the corner of their eye • Head hung low, eyes dull/squinting (pain) The first thing I say is leave your personal problems behind, take three deep breaths, and relax. Re-frame previous concepts that may bring on the experience of fear or anxiety. For example, in the past, maybe your pet was thought of as that ‘nasty, cranky, old cat/dog’, but have you ever thought

about scanning the animal for a reason – it may have arthritis, dental disease, or even nervous tension. Secondly, if the animal is making noise, do not make noise back at it. Cats and anxious dogs are more jumpy around loud noises, so keep you voice calm and slow, and do not yell. When people see their most loved companion, or their patient, yelping, squealing or barking, often the knee-jerk reaction is to say in a high pitch, quick voice, “IT’S OK, IT’S OK...” This is telling your pet through body language and noise that they should be scared and anxious, that it is NOT OK. Instead use your deep, slow, “sexy Barry White” voice to tell them they are a ‘good dog or cat’, to ‘sit’, ‘stay’ and be ‘still’, with no fast movements or tense body language. Never under-estimate the power of the liver treat or favourite toy, as this

can gain trust in an animal in a fearful situation. Thirdly, using calming massage techniques, and acupressure points can also be a great assistance. Massaging the GV20 acupuncture point (in the centre of the pet’s head) and the GB20 point (on either side of the back of the neck, at the base of the head) in slow circular motion is very calming. A technique I commonly use is the ear slide. This involves softly holding the base of your pet’s ears between your thumb and fingers, then slowly (over 5-10 seconds) slide down the ear to the tip. I recommend using calming essential oils in a carrier oil for massage, as well as aromatherapy diffusers and spray in the room. Calming homeopathy, mineral therapy and herbal supplements can be great for both the pet and yourself. You will be surprised by an animal’s tolerance when using all of these techniques. Creating a greater relationship with your pets WORDS VIV ADCOCK

T

he often un-acknowledged abilities of our pets go way beyond their role as a family companion. Whether it be a dog that is able to alert their owner of an impending epileptic seizure, a horse facilitating an abused child to regain their sense of self or the calming effect of a fish tank in a waiting room, animals can facilitate us in ways that are literally life-changing. Our pets can contribute to the expansion of our awareness. Animals

communicate telepathically, energetically and physically. They have a sphere of awareness, which is like an antenna that contributes “information” from the environment and people around them. Do you recall stories of the elephants and birds fleeing the area before the tsunami hit in South East Asia? What do animals perceive about the future and how can we tap into that? We teach our pets to understand our spoken language – what if you could learn theirs and receive clearly what they are gifting? Animals live in the present, they don’t hold onto the past and they seek to get along together. If they have to sort something out, they do it swiftly and then they are over it. They don’t create trauma and drama or go out for coffee and talk about it!! Whatever we hold onto or feel at the effect of, interferes with every relationship we have. Our domesticated friends can be unduly affected and this can contribute to the so-called behavioural issues or mystery health conditions. What if you could sense what is affecting your pet and better still, know what or who is required to change it?

A simple tool to practise communicating in a different way would be to ask your pet questions, like, “What are you showing me here? What awareness are you contributing to me?” By asking questions of them, you are changing how you interact with them. You can tap into their awareness of what is going on. This simple step begins to acknowledge them in a different way. This may take a bit of practise as it gets us out of thinking!! Another way to play with this is to notice what changes for you when you spend time with your furry friend. Are you aware that a space opens up – where peace and oneness exist? It is in this space that your relationship and communication can become greater. With your mind silent, becoming present, with none of your “stuff” in the way, the connection is available. Are you stressed, fatigued and unmotivated? Could your digestive system be making you unhappy? Could you solve your happiness puzzle with these missing puzzle pieces? Could it be bacteria? Researchers at McMaster University have supportive evidence that bacteria residing in the gut influence brain chemistry and behaviour. When there was a change in the gut flora of the test subjects increased anxiety and behaviour change was noted. For years these bacterias have been seen to be harmless, but the negative impact of specific strains of bacteria on the brain are documented. Pathogenic bacteria have the potential to cause havoc on your digestive system and indirectly may cause Serotonin to drop. Serotonin is your happy, relaxing neurotransmitter. Not many people are aware that it is predominantly made in the gut. Functional bacteria (the good guys) are often overlooked, they assist in breaking down your food and keeping your gut healthy.

What about heavy metals? Do you have amalgam dental fillings? Have you worked in the mines? Or in close contact with metals such as an electrician using copper wiring? Do you use copper cookware? Or drink from copper pipes? Heavy metals are linked to depression, fatigue, erratic moods, digestive problems and many other neurologic issues. HRT and use of the pill can cause copper to increase – this is because of the high levels of oestrogen, the likely symptoms could be unexplained headaches, PMS, depression and mood swings. Do I have the condition pyroluria? A very strange word, I know, maybe that is why so many people haven’t heard of it? Pyroluria is a genetically determined metabolic condition.
