fter years of being a stay-at-home mum, Janette decided to create a business that was a reflection of her interest in fashion, style and ethical living. With a background in marketing, and a degree in Anthropology, Janette decided to utilise her skills and follow her passion for culture and her ideals for the pursuit of the greater good. And so the funky fashion house and gift ware shop ‘Eco Eccentric’ in Brighton, Brisbane was born! And it’s a shopping experience you won’t forget… there are many organic and bamboo labels and the colour options and range of clothing is very unique, stylish and affordable. Creating a shopping environment where all of the clothing and home wares has an ethical or sustainable base is paramount for Janette and it allows her to give back to the community and encourage people to be conscious of what they are wearing against their skin all day.

Janette says people are looking for a connection to the process in their shopping experience. All of her labels and designers have a solid ethical relationship to the villagers or manufacturers; there are no sweat shops and her business attracts the right kind of suppliers. “Having the shop allows me to feel as if I am contributing to improve the poverty in the world, even if only a little. One thing I did learn is that people need to develop their own methods of income, to create independency not dependency.” In the future Janette would love to travel to Burma and to create her own clothing and home wares range. She believes that the connections she has developed in the community would be conducive to tailoring a specific range to target people’s specialised fashion requirements. ecoeccentric.com.au
