re you creating the relationships you desire? This month we have a feature on the topic of conscious relationships and some insightful articles and people contributing. Selecting, reading and editing all the articles this month has allowed me the space to reflect on how I had desired both a deeper connection with myself and a ‘loving partnership that works’ for my entire adult life. And after twelve years of co-creating a relationship with many twists and turns with my partner Rod, I have actualised my long-term relationship desires in this moment… and we continue to create it and what else is possible? Even though I had many years being happily single, there were a few people along the way that tried to convince me that a ‘partnership/relationship’ takes you away from consciousness or ultimately creates suffering. I am relieved I no longer doubt myself in this area. Conscious relating can be a walking, talking, living ‘beingness’ with every encounter and person including ourselves. There is more ease and flow the more we let go of the past and our conditioning and stop entraining to old, limited vibrations that keep us from being our own unique

energy resonance. So we can live in the present with imagination and possibilities for creating our future. And we can create with more awareness so life doesn’t just happen to us. Perfectionism, movie style expectations, blaming, constant reactiveness, passive aggression, not listening to each other and the need to be right, are just a few factors that can create relationship toxicity… what if there is another way? I love that this magazine invites different perspectives and people from a variety of backgrounds so we can see that there is not a ‘one size fits all’ approach to life and relationships. 1 loaf of Turkish bread

Ingredients: 20 small cup mushrooms 100g Enoki mushrooms 100g oyster mushrooms 3 tsp crushed garlic 8 rosemary sticks 10 thyme sprigs SPICES: 4 tsp cumin, 2 tsp cajun, 2 tsp smoked paprika, 3 tsp vegetable stock powder 4 tsp vegetable oil White cooking wine (can also use nice wine if wanting to get lit as you go) White vinegar 800ml coconut cream Half a lemon Half a lime

Method: Heat up a large pan and oil over high heat. Once flamin’ – add the cup mushrooms. When the ’shrooms become brown, add garlic, Enoki and oyster mushrooms. After the garlic and exotic mushrooms take some brown colour, splash with vinegar to deglaze the pan, as the vinegar disappears repeat this step with wine . As the wine evaporates add the juice of half a lemon and lime. Chuck in some rosemary and thyme sprigs before adding all of the coconut cream. Now’s a good time to rip and toast up that Turkish loaf!

Ditch the spices on top and let it bubble and thicken up. After about 6 minutes the sauce should be a beautiful brownred colour. Remove from heat, add salt and pepper to taste. Decorate with your remaining herbs, gaze at its beauty and enjoy! Pairs well with beer and reggae music. the sidelines 14 friends battle cancer and with the loss of four gorgeous souls, I knew the stats of 1:2 were just the beginning! Why wasn’t anyone talking about FOOD??? Well, it’s been 20 years since my best friend Pam started her terrifying journey which she lost last August and I didn’t have another 20 years to wait!!! or many people our thoughts are consumed by negative self-talk towards our bodies and our relationship with food is not a nourishing and pleasurable one. Food deprivation, appetite control, punishing exercise and hating yourself into creating the body and life you want, is an absurd way we have been conditioned to believe should be the action steps that lead us to healthy change. Ultimately the path you take informs the destination, so we need to move away from the belief that our measure of success should equal the number on a scale, the size of our jeans or how long you were able to stay on the diet. We need to instead focus on transitioning away from exercise we dislike, towards movement that is fun, enjoyable and embodying. We need to continue to eat real, unprocessed whole foods and increase the quality of food we choose to eat. It is also extremely important to be mindful of

how we eat, as this can also influence the nutritional value of our meal. When we slow down with our meals (meaning we eat with awareness), receive pleasure from our food and enjoy the experience of eating, we switch on the relaxation response. This is also known as the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the optimal state for digestion, assimilation and calorie burning. However if we eat a meal fast or in a stressed state, it puts the body into a stress response and increases the potential for unwanted digestive symptoms such as heartburn, bloating and gas. It elevates insulin and cortisol and in excess amounts these hormones signal the body to store weight, store fat and not build muscle. How powerful is that! My favourite technique I use to achieve optimum nutritional metabolism and slow down with my food, is to take 5-10 long slow deep breaths to drop into a relaxation response. I then say

4 steps to effectively deal with burn-out, depression, anxiety and lack of self-esteem and increase overall happiness and satisfaction in life. Mindfulness integrated Cogni�ve Behaviour (MiCBT) is an evidence based modality – with scien�fic backing – which will allow you to successfully deal with a broad range of life situa�ons. To be Mindful means to be aware of what is happening to you, without being caught up in any of it. The easy-to-master MiCBT techniques have high success rates in dealing with anxiety, depression, PTSD and work-life balance issues. They put YOU back in control of your life.

I also try to avoid multitasking, as this usually leads to unconscious eating, followed by overeating, because my brain was not able to assess the full nutrient content of the meal, influencing my natural appetite regulation. In terms of movement, I aim to move my body every day doing something I love, whether that is taking a yoga class or going for a walk in nature, these activities help keep my cortisol and stress levels in check. LAXATIVES: Short-term gain for LONG-TERM LOSS WORDS JOEL GRACE, Owner, Sunshine Colonics Health & Wellness Centre


e’ve all experienced the uncomfortable feeling of constipation at some stage, but for many people that backed-up sensation is more the norm than the exception. It can be tempting to reach for an over-the-counter laxative as a quick fix to get some relief, but it’s so much better for the health of your digestive system to look at natural dietary solutions to ease constipation. Why are pharmaceutical and overthe-counter laxatives so bad for me? Laxatives regularly cause serious and irreversible damage by artificially stimulating and desensitising the nerve endings in your colon, which pretty quickly impairs your ability to have a complete and satisfying bowel movement. Laxatives make your colon work in reverse, by drawing water into your waste to bulk up your stool instead of absorbing water out of your waste. Laxative dependency occurs when the colon stops reacting to usual doses of laxatives so that larger amounts of laxatives may be needed

to produce bowel movements. By this stage, the nerve endings in your colon are impaired and are simply less able to stimulate your intestinal muscles to contract. What about senna? I see a lot of people taking senna tea or a senna supplement because it’s a natural laxative alternative. It’s rare for me to say this, but just because something is natural doesn’t always make it good for you! Senna can have the same desensitising effect on your colon nerve endings as conventional laxatives and as such should be avoided or at the least used very sparingly. If senna laxatives are used too frequently, laxative dependence, electrolyte imbalance and loss of normal bowel function can occur. What are the best natural laxatives? Look for foods that help lubricate the intestines, such as chia seeds, aloe vera, flax seeds and slippery elm. Ensure that your fibre intake is adequate with foods like prunes, papaya, kiwifruit and sweet potato.

Probiotic foods like sauerkraut and kim chi will help improve stool consistency and regularity. And a minimum of 10 glasses of water daily will ensure your waste is adequately hydrated and soft enough to easily leave your body. Apple cider vinegar can also accelerate waste movement through the colon. Can you repair the damage done by conventional laxatives? Absolutely! That’s where colonics come in. ver the last few years the words of consciousness, awareness, presence and ‘beingness’ have crept into conversations and life choices in all walks of life. The collective energy field is pulsing and offering a new way of living to all who hear the call. One of the areas where change is rapidly required is in relationships. People are wanting deeper, richer connections, more meaningful conversations, walking through life with a partner who not only loves you, but brings the holy grail of the highly valued gifts of: responsibility, listening, vulnerability, trust and appreciation, while allowing space for the uniqueness of each person to be explored, discovered and revealed. Any relationship with another is a direct reflection of a person’s own 10

relationship with themselves. It reveals their unconditional love for self, or their lack of it. A conscious relationship is a journey, not a destination. It is an aspect of your commitment to life by committing yourself to another person. When you engage in living life from a higher consciousness, everything changes and relationships have a chance of being what you desire them to be. What you put into yourself, will be shared with those you love. Change is a result of answering conscious intelligence, which alters our frequency, and DNA. When I entered the sanctuary of Michael and Carolyn Roads, I crossed into an expanded energy field. The proverbial parting of the veils, the moving through a membrane, into a world reflecting their connection to earth, nature, plants and each other. The genuine warm heart hug from

Carolyn was indeed a preparation for the piercing, unwavering gaze of her husband Michael, who holds the space of absolute truth. In that instant, I saw how they worked effortlessly as a team, how a conscious relationship is a powerful way of living; the knower (Michael) and the knowing (Carolyn). Michael and Carolyn are quite a rare couple. They dynamically walk their talk, travelling and offering their expertise through intensive courses all over the world. Their intensives take people into the place of knowing who they are by breaking through and breaking down their barriers. Participants can then ‘embrace emotional balance and clarity’ while understanding how life works. It is from this point of knowing self, that you can create rewarding, full relationships with others and life, while living consciously in the eternal moment. Michael’s journey with enlightenment

began as a dairy farmer in Tasmania. One day he jumped onto his children’s homemade roundabout and set it spinning. As he spun around he wondered, “Where am I going? Where am I from?” And then came the universal question, the catalyst for all spiritual awakenings, “WHO AM I?” This question, the beginning of conscious growth, the catalyst for change, is in the collective consciousness, the field of wisdom that permeates all of life. It arises for each of us, when the time is right. As Michael said, not enough people take action on the opportunity for change, on the invitation to consciously create, to open to the truth of self. Bruce Lipton quotes that 94% of the world lives subconsciously, which means they are living without any real connection to themselves. A few years after this universal question, Michael and his family left the farm to travel around Australia. His thirst for spiritual living and inner discovery, directed Michael to create a community based in NSW for those earnestly seeking to live a spiritual life. After a few years he realised I AM THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN CREATE MY DREAM, so he left the community to pursue his own spiritual quest. Over the next few years, Michael spent time engaging nature on a metaphysical level and writing, ‘Talking with Nature’ which eventually became a best seller in the USA. During that time, he became ill and was spiralling downward in health. As with many people, ill health took him to the edge, where there were two options available! Instead of dying, Michael said he became enlightened. Michael gave a twist to the old saying: “Before enlightenment I chopped wood and carried water. After enlightenment, I chopped wood and carried water” by adding “… effortlessly” at the end. “What does enlightenment mean to you?” I asked Michael. His answer, “The end of worry, ill-health, self-judgement, anxiety, and self-criticism.” Twenty-six years ago Michael started to tour the world as a spiritual teacher. At the time he was reluctant to carry that label. Carolyn was the event coordinator in the USA, and a friendship began. Both were married to their longterm partners and the four developed a good friendship that lasted for many years. After the grieving process when

Michael’s wife passed away in 2006, he reached a moment where he felt complete unconditional love within himself. Carolyn’s long marriage had ended, so she and Michael reconnected as good friends until a spark of something more lead them to romance and marriage. Carolyn said, “Between us we have over 100 years of being married, so we have had plenty of practise.” When it comes to relationships, Michael said, “love is the power of creation, not an emotion.” Carolyn so eloquently suggested that unconditional love is a space within self; one of complete acceptance. Some days you will get it wrong, but accept that it is situational experience, and that is how it is in that moment. It is NOT defining your true self. “Life always gets it right,” is what Carolyn offered, so in her words, “stop trying to move away from yourself, stop seeing what is wrong and stop trying to fix it, just accept you, all of you, just as you are. When you can achieve that, you can then offer that to all relationships you experience.” The ‘what you see is what you get’ attitude is an expression of living in truth, which this couple demonstrates constantly, whether sitting over a cuppa or in front of many hundreds of people, while teaching about the transformational process to raise the participants’ consciousness. They walk their talk, loving each other and themselves unconditionally. Here are their suggestions to create or achieve more conscious relationships: 1. See the newness in your partner each day 2. What can CHILDREN TEACH US about relationships? WORDS JEAN SHEEHAN, Principal – Millennium Education


he best form of conscious relationship you can have with a child is to be totally conscious of what you say, do and how you behave. The old adage, ‘do as I say and not as I do’ does not fit with the new Millennium Children®. Let’s make it easy with conscious language and what it does for this amazing generation of children. When you get this, life for you and them will be easy and the relationship you have with them will empower the children and you. The Millennium Children® work from heart base and love language and the old ways will not create a loving or empowering relationship. In fact, some of these dynamic souls will push your buttons to make you more conscious of the relationship to have. That might be by hitting, swearing, cussing or even not talking. When I teach this to teachers, childcare workers and parents, I explain there are key words that create conscious relationships which these children require to blossom. If you want them to do something with great passion, these are the words that will support them:

want, like, feel, will, can, choose. These conscious words allow children and especially teenagers to feel empowered and to know they have a choice to be the example of what is possible. As these words invoke feeling which these children thrive on, their conscious awareness allows them to access their higher wisdom to create a relationship with anything including their guides and angels. If you use words like have to, should, must, got to, can’t, need and ought to, it is talking to the Millennium Children® unconsciously and they will not understand you and may even rebel, as it does not make sense to them. The relationship you have just created is one that is awkward and restricted. These are the old outdated words that have been used and no longer fit the new generation. So many teachers and parents have explained that as soon as they changed their language with the children, there was a heart connection and the children seemed to be happier and more alive. They blossomed in a way that could not

be put in to words. That is because it became a conscious relationship between all. When we are conscious, we are totally aware of our self, or our environment and others. These children are here to raise the consciousness of the world and if we see something in them we want to change, it might be best to check to see if it is within us. Knowing that the other person is angry, one who remains mindful and calm acts for his own best interest and for the other’s interest too.’’ – Buddhist Scripture Since I started working with selfawareness and mindfulness many years ago, it became clear to me that every relationship I enter into, whether it be a personal or professional one, is a reflection of my relationship with ME. How I relate to everything and everyone is totally dependent on my beliefs and ideas about ‘the world’. The way in which I experience the world, and my ability to be happy in it, constantly changes based on my mindset. I am responsible for my responses and reactions to life’s events. No-one else. I didn’t always like that idea. I often thought that it would be much easier if I could blame something or someone for my bad luck or for my hurt. It would have hurt even more if I had to


acknowledge that my reaction is my responsibility! If you are familiar with my articles in HBM, you know that I see pointing fingers and laying blame as ‘reactions’; defensive mechanisms in us that are meant to make us feel better when we get hurt by something or someone. These reactions are understandable, but hardly ever helpful in the long run. A more wholesome and ultimately more beneficial approach is to develop strong awareness of your feelings at each point in time (‘present-centred awareness’ or mindfulness) and to STOP yourself from that split-second reaction that wants to come out of you instantly. Wait a couple of seconds, think about the situation, and then respond (instead of react). It’s a skill that can be learned quite easily – just ask me – and it will change your life forever. Research into mindfulness has linked growing present-centred awareness to important emotional

results, including positive affect and empathy. Findings like these strongly suggest that mindfulness has positive consequences for relationship health, first and foremost the relationship with ourselves. Once we start to grasp the relationship with ourselves and become more and more accepting, similar results will start to show in relationships with the world around us. They just HAVE to. One of my current favourite authors, Shawn Achor, a Harvard University Psychologist and researcher, states it this way: “While we, of course, can’t change reality through sheer force of will alone, we can use our brain to change how we process the world, and that in turn changes how we react to it.” And that’s exactly it. What has MONEY got to do with




o one tells you that the purpose of money is to change people’s realities. When I was growing up, I was told “If I give you money then you have to do this, or do that.” That is what I was taught with money and that’s how I saw money. When I asked questions as a kid, I was told “It’s none of your business” so I grew up thinking money was none of my business. Later in life, I realised that having those points of view created no money. So I tell my son everything about money. It gives him the freedom to have the awareness of what it takes to create money. I started to educate myself about money; I realised how money worked and got clear on how much it is I earn and how much it is I spend. From there, I could figure out how much more I needed to create. With creating more money, look at the different ways people create it. Look at how they

create and then ask: What would it take for me to have that? And then be willing to do whatever it takes. Also, put 10% of what you earn away and don’t touch it. Put it away as an honouring of you. I know this is weird to some people but, trust me, I have been doing it now for 3-4 years and my income keeps going up. So I know it works. With money most people look to ‘how much of the pie’ they can get. As I started to see the value of money and what it could add to my life, I saw how using money could contribute to people. When I looked at what I could contribute to others with what I create, my relationships with others started to change. Relationship by definition is actually the distance between two points. With all relationships, I ask “what would I like to create with this person?” If you look at relationships from a day-to-day

creation then you don’t get bored with it; you create with it. Ask “what can I create with this person today”, not “what’s wrong with my relationship?” The purpose of relationship should be for your life to expand and increase. Look at what else is possible and ask if this is actually what you desire to have in your life? 95% of people in the world would rather have a bad relationship than no relationship at all. If you can be kind to yourself, you can have someone that can be kind to you. Anything that you desire to have in a relationship, you actually need to have with yourself. This pain origin may branch from your own experiences of fear, resentment, self-pity, abandonment, betrayal or feeling unsupported, to name a few responses to your emotional environment and relationships. It may also be inherited. Our emotional DNA may also be inherited from parents, grandparents or their grandparents, so when working with clients, I quite often need to work on their family patterns. When an ancestor has felt stuck, frustrated and powerless in their life due to obligations and expectations, this energy distortion may, without intention be passed on. So a client may feel as though they are unable to achieve their goals, put themselves first or feel like they have a right to a healthy, positive, nurtured life and may have absolutely no idea why. Adjusting this energetic story also brings with it a change of behaviour. Disconnected behaviours such as: entitlement, cravings, obligations, isolation, expectations or projections, are simply ways to guard against real or perceived physical, emotional or psychological threats, often employing control, avoidance, blame or manipulation to ensure this selfpreservation. ith a photo of Carolyn and me on the cover of Holistic Bliss this month – an honour – and also being featured in Raelene’s article on relationships, I am offering a bit more of the story of our spiritual relationships. This is my 26th year of travelling to ten to twelve countries yearly presenting five-day intensives, and, naturally enough, in every different country we are both involved in relationships with many other people. The overall objective of an intensive is that the participant will be able to go home with a clear knowing of how to inner-grow from illusion to enlightenment, and how to create fulfilling and enriching relationships, starting with themselves. Our relationship with ourself is, by far, the most important relationship we will ever have. It creates the foundation for our relationship with life, with health, with abundance… with everything.

The creative power of unconditional love plays a very important role in all relationships. Love is perceived as an emotion, but this is not so. Love is the power of creation. It is said that ‘God is Love’ which is true. And it is love that created the world – not an emotion! Love is existence itself, it’s what we are; the frequency that links us all to each other, to nature, to our world and to our relationship with our eternal divinity. Carolyn and I have been so blessed to have discovered unconditional love within ourselves, thus we travel the world for four to five months of the year doing our best to bring love and light into people’s lives. Spreading the Love Bug! The growing and emotional healing of other people is also the growing and emotional healing of ourselves! I could truthfully say that in my early years as a spiritual teacher I was sometimes emotionally bewildered by a few of the

participants, whereas nowadays this almost never happens. I also grew! As, over the years, my emotions came more and more into balance, the emotional confrontations ended. Now, this never happens. This is why in our intensives I give quite some time teaching about how to achieve the rare state of emotional balance. In my 80 years I have learned that emotional balance, unconditional love and realising the true meaning of life and of self are the greatest gifts one can achieve. These are the treasures that stay with us forever, continuing into each new incarnation. I have dedicated my life to helping others experience this also. CONSCIOUS RELATIONSHIPS whether we realise it or not, this has a lot to do with who we are moved to connect with. Physical appearance, voice, beliefs, mannerisms and even smell influence our responses. When a relationship includes a sexual attraction particularly in youth, our hormones may override many of these intuitive promptings. We often experience more confusion in our intimate relationships than our more casual friendships. Intimacy in relationship opens us up, and literally leaves us naked in front of the other. strongly attracted to him but past experience had rendered me untrusting of my feelings when it came to men and my protective instincts as a mother made me wary. Luckily Terry was persistent. He listened to my fears patiently, and then arrived at my doorstep one morning with a ‘Just Do It’ T-shirt on. That was 12 years ago. Honesty, Trust and Respect Becoming good friends first made it easier for us to develop ‘open honesty, trust and respect’ for each other which forms, to this day, a solid foundation for our relationship. Trust and respect need to be earned, so I am talking here about honorable relationships. Terry and I are both dedicated to our spiritual path and had been sincere seekers long before we met. But, as mature adults we each brought our personal STUFF into the relationship in the form of fears, limiting beliefs and habits. With nine children between us, and a history of unfulfilling past relationships, these were considerable. But this will only serve to undermine mutual trust and be a catalyst for fearful, defensive and possibly aggressive behaviour. Challenges People often see our relationship as a fairytale but it has taken us to some really tough places. We have been further challenged by the suicide of my 17-yearold son and deep feelings of grief and loss that followed. any of my clients seek help for ongoing drama within their daily lives and their own personal relationships. Often they blame others for their suffering and pain. My advice is simple: let go of the blame game, and take responsibility for your own actions. Truth, honesty and integrity are the foundations of a conscious relationship. Stand in your truth, speak your truth, and listen when your partner is speaking their truth. Be honest with yourself, and to your partner, and have the integrity to be mindful and sincere of how you treat your partner. Once trust is broken or secrets are kept, morals will fade and darken, and coming back from that lowest point takes effort and forgiveness from both sides. We all make mistakes: we are spirits in an organic body having a human experience. But unthinkingly allowing those cycles to recur again and again, will only set you up for a life of torment and suffering. If you are in turmoil within a relationship, then you are assuredly

the co-creators of the drama that is being played out. You are allowing it to happen with your own actions and reactions. I believe in love. Love is the most important key to life… without love there is only emptiness… with love there is wholeness. Love your life, love your world, love your tribe, and love the person who wants to truly share their life with you. Many of us have already experienced that true awareness of connection – the euphoria of intense eye contact, the sensation of touching and having our energies entangled, feeling our spirits merge as our bodies coalesce… To receive love, you must love… love is the greatest gift we can give: a hug, a heartfelt embrace, words of encouragement, listening. Never take it for granted that they know you love them… show them every day. Simplicity is the key that so many of us have missed. Children learn about themselves and their place in the world from you, the parent. If children can see you dealing positively with negative feelings and challenging situations, their brains will grow neural pathways to inform them that this is normal. I don’t want to make love with you anymore.” It’s a statement that’s been heard by many a devastated man or woman, perhaps more often than not; the bombshell that explodes dreams, and cuts to the very core of anyone’s self-worth. Sexual intimacy isn’t everything in a relationship, but for some it is really important. With all the couples I work with, at the deep core of the issue is lack of connection. That’s the missing piece. I also see many who love each other and desperately want to connect, but their sexual connection is just not matching up. They are in two different places. How to bring each together so they are on the same page? That can be a very individual process but generally lack of connection will invariably have its roots in some kind of level of absence; you get the feel

the other person is just ‘not with you’. Or it might be you, who is ‘not there’. For some, the style of sex we are all used to, can become mechanical and lack soul. The thing is that our bodies are still engaged – so we seem present, but the mind will often have a goal, which means we are in the future. If our mind is elsewhere, then we are not present. And the other person can feel it. And love falls by the wayside. It can eventually leave little to be desired as each turns off in their own way, one avoiding and the other continually attempting to connect. The key is finding the bridge to move from absence to presence. Our wonderful mind loves to be given a job – so give it the job of simple… awareness. The act of awareness is the bridge, the pathway between absence and presence. It is the link that can move you from distant to loving, from

abandoned and abandoning, to connecting. And this takes practice. So engaging your inner awareness on your own body, not the other person’s; awareness on your breath; on your heart, lifting the awareness away from the genitals so they can be allowed to ‘do their own thing’; softening your eyes and making eye contact in a way that is inviting, not interrogating of the other. These are just some tools of awareness that you can use to bring more presence and thus more connection into your relationship. And the magic? Love and connection is the by-product! Enjoy! ’ve loved love my whole life. Its ways are deeply woven into my being. For as long as I can remember, I had called in that great love that awaited me somewhere on this planet. From four years of age, my Nan’s teacup readings confirmed my future happiness. With all the love in her heart, she would pour us tea and then give me a reading. The message was always, “Oh my darling, you are going to be so very happy in your life. You will grow into a beautiful woman, your life will be just as beautiful as you. You will marry a handsome, kind man who will love and support you to live your dreams.” I based my measurement of love on my Nan’s prophecies and a mixture of two books: The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and the writings on love in The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran. I was doomed from the start! I knew love was sacred, I was yet to learn it would not leave me alone until I

had surrendered all my ideas of it. It seems everything comes at a price, we just need to decide if we are willing to pay it? In my teenage years, I began writing lists about that one great love who was to come. At the time, the only way I knew I could access this ‘one’ great love was through another. I was yet to understand that this ‘oneness’, this great love, was already within me, so I set about writing lists for the ‘one’ that was to come. They were detailed, clear and for my polishing. Mostly they were long lists of what I perceived was absent in me or my life. Qualities I expected some miracle human to fulfil. After decades of countless revisions, one day I finally realised I embodied all the qualities on my list. My list had become a reflection of my own heart. A deep sense of peace settled upon me. It didn’t matter if I never loved another again.

could be right!? As time kicks on many begin to wonder is this really the one? Seems like such a big question, yet one which actually could be pretty simple. You see at the core of who we are, we already know – our soul knows the truth of the connection. Yet it may be that fears, programs, beliefs from our ancestors have come through to our DNA, things that create ‘reasons’ to pull back, to sabotage, to second-guess. It is important that we step up and see what is really going on and get clear. We can remove limiting patterns and beliefs that were inherited so we can transcend with our love into deeper levels of commitment and connection. Life becomes a lot more easeful when we decide to work together, when we decide to be conscious about situations when they arise and it’s worth putting in the effort to look beyond simple daily annoyances. For instance, the home is a clear indicator of relationship balance.


Subconscious struggles for control can play out when one person has more control within the house than the other – a couple of things to look at: Who has control in the kitchen? Who decorates the house? Who is in charge of the remote control? Who has more control in the bedroom? – These things are indicators. If you don’t want clothes sprawled out in the living room, or for them to use your toothbrush, or perhaps you would like for them to be home more with you… perhaps look at the whole picture. A couple of slight adjustments could see order restored, which will then overflow into other areas of your relationship. It is important that your home is equally yours and theirs, just as it’s important that you both love and are loved in return. o live and function well in your personal relationships, ‘emotional hygiene’ is something all of us must understand. It is a key factor to enjoying long term relationships. What is emotional hygiene within a relationship? We all have an ‘emotional smell’. If our emotions are happy, light, peaceful, etc, we emotionally smell great, an individual sweet, unique body perfume. When we internalise feelings, leave things unresolved, believe we are insignificant or bury our emotions, we will let off an unpleasant ‘emotional smell’. So how do you know if you or your partner are emotionally unhygienic? Firstly, there is nothing wrong with being emotionally unhygienic. Imagine body hygiene. If someone smells physically great, it’s yummy to be close. A warm light emotional cuddle or connection is something we all love and enjoy. Just as it is easy to help, prevent and detect physical hygiene, you can quickly improve emotional hygiene.

A few early signs of unhygienic emotions in force are: • Either of you will have a restless sleep • Fearful about money • Insecure when being social • Tired for no reason • Overly hungry or no appetite • No natural momentum • Unorganised in your paperwork, housework or garden • Addictive • Lots of negation in the head What to do if you are emotionally unhygienic? Stop! Just as you would if you had foul body odour. You would grab some deodorant, find a public bathroom, suck on mints, brush your teeth or stop for a shower. You never think it will just go away! You stop and sort it out – to the point where we now all fit in a daily shower, to maintain our physical hygiene. If you find yourself feeling emotionally wobbly or are experiencing any of the early signs, here is what you can start to do to help yourself. Recognise your emotional triggers in the very early stages. Stop and evaluate, do you need to give yourself 5-15 minutes and a pen and paper?

Take a few deep breaths and write down the three most current stressful things affecting you in your life right now. Look at what you have written. Then ask your body, out loud, to give you three solutions. “Body, give me three workable and satisfying solutions.” When you get them, action at least one of them. If you don’t get anything, maybe wait for an hour or two, or sleep on it. Then get back into something that feels exciting or you need to do. If nothing comes after that, talk it out with a partner or close friend. If still nothing or not enough, pick up your phone and book into seeing your favourite therapist. Begin valuing processing time. Record or journal your thoughts. This is another way to enjoy downtime. Untouched emotional hygiene is more harmful to bodies than untouched physical hygiene. DONNA SEWELL HB: Can you describe your work over the last few years as a solicitor? Donna: My role as a solicitor is assisting people with transitions. I am the support person when a client has movement in their life. Be it buying or selling a property, starting a new business, divorcing or terminating a relationship, through to even beginning a relationship. These are all examples of life changes. Interview with BRETT HB: How would you describe the work you do? Brett: Firstly I am an holistic healer, psychic, medium and life coach. There are many caps I wear and this is why I offer an array of different services from psychic and mediumship readings, to life coaching and past life regression. I have seen, heard and sensed the spirit world since I was a child. I had a premonition at 13 years of age and it related to a major family event which I had predicted with 100% accuracy. I have spent my whole adult life working in this field. Clients who walk in my door usually want to work on their life in some way, whether that be connecting to past loved ones, confirmation of being on the right life path and/or to raise their own selfawareness and become connected to their higher self, to make more intuitive decisions in life. Hypnotherapy, including past life regression (understanding why we do what we do and finding root causes). 3. Accepting mistakes as points of learning and moving forward with the learning (knowing that past mistakes are only points to improve oneself). 4. s a society, we are becoming much more conscious of the relationship between what we eat and our general well-being. We know a lot more about the benefits of certain foods, the potential damage caused by others, and what may need to be avoided by those with intolerances and inflammatory conditions. Many of us, including the majority of my patients, make a conscious effort to consume food in ways that will benefit their health. One area we are only starting to understand is the role played by the gut on our overall well-being – and I’m not referring to size here! I am talking about the mini eco-system inside our gut comprising mainly of different bacteria, as well as some other micro-organisms – the microbiome. We all have our own unique gut community, which changes over time due to our diet, lifestyle and overall health. We are now beginning to realise that the relationship between

these factors and gut health is far more complex, and more important than what we had previously thought in the prevention and treatment of a range of different conditions and diseases. These include: eczema, autism, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, candida and a range of autoimmune diseases and allergies. There have also been recent studies showing a noticeable influence of gut health on mood, depression and anxiety. There are many microbiotaenhancing foods that provide a valuable source of non-digestible compounds that encourage the growth of beneficial micro-organisms in the gut. These are known as prebiotics, and your health care professional can work with you to determine those best suited to you and your individual needs. In addition, one of the more recent areas of focus is on probiotics – these are the ‘good’ bacteria that can be found in certain fermented foods or

prepared in concentrated forms such as a capsule. There are a wide range of beneficial bacteria that fall into this category. ollowing on from last month’s article, I’ve had a lot of people want to know more about why petroleum products are so bad for your lips, yet so commonly used. This month we break down the luscious lip illusion of fake-good products. In most cases reaching for a product that moisturisers your lips, especially as the weather gets cooler and the humidity decreases, is really a no brainer, but what if what you’re using is doing more harm than good. The illusion when using these petrochemical-based products is that it will give you lips that are moisturised and hydrated, yet it’s not water-soluble and acts as a water repellent. This lustred imitation of a great lip care product more often than not helps to clog your pores. And unless you know exactly where the petroleum jelly has come from and made for, you may be risking your luminous lips to some very well documented ingredients such as dioxane 1-4. This is a by-product that is known by leading chemists,

formulators and other industry leaders as a carcinogen. Perhaps what you should be looking for is added emollients to your lip care needs. Things such as shea butter, cocoa butter, bees wax and carnauba wax, are all great examples. The mistake I made was the tiny spot that would bleed on my nose had been there 3 years. I did have it frozen off however it grew back. I recently learnt that freezing BCCs only has a 30% success rate. I then went back a year later… I dawdled into the surgery to have my regular skin check and said I don’t think the freezing worked, it’s still bleeding. Der!!! (80’s chick) I then tried the prescription cream and applied it for six weeks which left my nose sore and ulcerated. Long story short… I should have had it cut out three years before I did. I discovered something about myself two weeks ago on the surgery table. I’m not as tough as I thought, so naturally I said “No don’t worry, local anesthetic is fine, I’ll be right”. WRONG! I ended up hyperventilating on the table and found the whole experience traumatic. I should have had a general anesthetic

Profile of an essential oil –




blend using two drops German chamomile, one drop lavender and one drop peppermint and massage gently into the stomach region in a clockwise direction. This beautiful oil is beneficial in treating swollen joints, sprains and muscle tears, making it an ideal addition to a cup of magnesium salts when bathing. German chamomile is excellent for people with sensitive, inflamed or irritated skin. Add two drops to two drops each of lavender and frankincense in a warm compress and place over the affected area. Known for its qualities as a vaso-constrictor, it can help reduce the redness of cheeks caused by enlarged blood vessels. For the treatment of slow healing wounds and skin conditions like ingrown toenails and abscesses, you can use German chamomile, patchouli and tea tree as an effective wash. For a wonderful hair mask and scalp treatment, mix two drops each of German chamomile, rosemary and geranium into 20ml of jojoba or

erman chamomile is extracted from the dried flower heads. It is an incredible deep blue colour, which is formed from matricin during the steam distillation process, which is caused by a component called chamazulene. German chamomile has a more distinct medicinal, herbal aroma compared to the sweeter, more floral aroma of Roman chamomile. Whilst both are very soothing and calming oils, German chamomile is known for its powerful analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and anti-allergenic qualities. Potent, yet gentle German chamomile is a highly effective medicinal oil excellent to use safely with lavender and orange on small children. One drop of each in 10ml of a carrier oil like sweet almond, macadamia or jojoba oil, would make a calming massage blend, perfect after a bath and to prepare for sleep. You could use these same oils in a diffuser to help create a calm, cleansed and refreshed environment. For tummy upsets, make a massage

coconut oil. Massage into the scalp and to the hair ends, comb through. For best results leave on overnight. Remember to apply shampoo onto the oiled head before adding water. Shampoo twice and condition as normal. A refreshing blend to help heal skin conditions is two drops German chamomile, two drops lavender, 1 drop rose and 1 drop sandalwood into a 50ml spritzer bottle filled with water. Shake and spritz over the affected area to soothe, calm and heal. To relieve the symptoms of a headache or migraine, mix two drops of German chamomile with two drops of peppermint into a small bowl of cool water. Use a face washer or muslin cloth dipped into the bowl, then squeeze excess water and compress across forehead. Repeat as necessary. One of the best oils to help calm negative thoughts, agitation, nervous tension and insomnia, German chamomile is a must-have in any home aroma first aid kit. www.twenty8.com

A gift to your cells

ulvic acids are extremely complex, bioactive, low molecular weight, organic substances that are the final product of microbial decomposition of the natural, organic matter from the remains of prehistoric forests that flourished on earth over 100 million years ago. They are like supercharged biochemical and phytochemical batteries, storing the massive amounts of the sun’s energy captured by the plant during its lifetime, via photosynthesis, and then, through many generations of microbial decomposition it is transformed into the most refined yet complex natural substance on earth. They have never been fully characterised nor clearly defined. Scientists still do not thoroughly understand their structure, nor do they understand exactly how they work. Fulvic acids absorb metallic minerals and toxic organic pollutants, which are either transformed into new, bioavailable compounds, or eliminated as waste. They also have the unique ability to potentiate the bio-availability of vitamins, herbs, minerals, tinctures, and nutrients in foods which makes them more absorbable. They act as a cellular detoxifier, removing the debris from energy production that would otherwise cause the cells to clog up and

die. Ingestion of fulvic acids is known to increase the ability of cells to release toxic metals. Australia’s Ecotoxicology Program found that when fish swam in water with fulvic acids, their aluminium toxicity levels were up to six times lower than otherwise. Current practices in agriculture and wastewater management have removed these valuable substances from the diet. he animals are asking us to listen. How do you hear them? We listen in many ways. With our ears we hear barking, meowing, neighing, and birdsong. We listen with our eyes, observing body condition, body language and behaviour. We listen through touch, feeling tension or softness. We listen also with intuition, our soul’s knowing. So how can you know what an animal is feeling, thinking, or saying? In short: It depends. At length: It depends upon the animal, their experiences, emotions, their state of health and wellbeing, and their knowledge built upon all these things. It depends upon their unique, individual life story, the contributing events and their interactive environment. Their unique biography is expressed through behaviour, actions, reactions, vocalisations, and an energy system of wholeness or dis-ease. I’ve listened to ‘out of control’ animals who shared that their human was in total overwhelm, providing inconsistent leadership and human initiated changes regarding exercise and play. I’ve listened to animals seeking

recognition of their wants, needs and desires, wanting to be seen as more than ‘just a…’. I’ve listened to animals who needed to know it was okay not to be scared anymore, or that their grief was real. I’ve met animals whose physical ailments were preceded by emotional disruption. Like humans, an animal’s biochemical and physiological state is affected by life events, their story. By listening with an open heart and mind, free from judgment and fear, you move toward understanding and appreciating the simplicity and complexity of what animals are communicating. Sometimes listening means letting go the perception of ‘good’ or ‘bad’. An animal repeatedly invading your personal space may seem a ‘problem’. However, it may be showing how easily your boundaries are violated, or how anxious and uncertain of your continued love and affection they are, or trying to get you out of your head, the past or future, into the here and now. A health issue unresolved despite repeated veterinary treatment, may be prompting listening to body and energy consciousness. Listening can mean going

Tooth and gum problems Give dogs and cats raw meaty bones and crunchy vegetables regularly to chew on. The scraping action helps prevent plaque, which becomes mineralised as calculus build-up, which can lead to gum disease. Gently massage your fluffy friend’s gums and teeth daily, as a training exercise you can build up their tolerance to this. This helps to clean teeth and gums if done regularly. Finger

toothbrushes and dog and cat toothpaste are available from both pet shops and vets. Relieve your puppy’s teething pain by giving it an old linen tea towel or a cotton face washer to chew on but supervise this so the puppy doesn’t swallow this and get an intestinal blockage. Wet the washer and twist it before putting it in the freezer for an hour. The cold will help relieve the pain of sore, swollen and irritated gums. Feed frozen meat and frozen stews for puppy’s meals. The soothing cold helps the gums and as it thaws it can be dinner, eaten slowly. Bonjela ointment can help. Urinary tract infections Stir a small amount of cranberry juice (no added sugar, and NO Xylitol – which is poisonous to dogs) or 2501000mg vitamin C powder into your pet’s food. This can help to acidify the urine and stop the infection-causing bacteria multiplying in the bladder. Citrus juice has a similar effect and may also ease painful urination. D Mannose sugar prevents bacteria from taking hold, and Ba Zheng San the Chinese herbal formulae is also helpful.

Consult your vet if there is blood in the urine. This is usually a sign of infection and your pet may need to commence a course of antibiotics immediately. Leaving it too long may worsen the situation and cause unnecessary suffering for your animal friend.
