This month many of our writers talk about different aspects of the skin. And it’s quite a personal topic because the skin ‘covers so much’…How do you feel ‘in your skin’ when you first get up and look in the mirror? What products do you slap on it? And do you know what’s really in those bottles? Is your skin telling you it’s time for a detox? Do you drink enough water to hydrate your skin? Do you judge it as too lumpy, old or wrong in some way?

Is there a link between the gut and the brain?
For years scientists have called your digestive system your “second brain”. It is like the roots of a tree; it absorbs your nutrients and helps you to ﬂourish. But what if you carried bacterias that released neuro-toxins, affecting the way your brain works and at the same time lowered your nutrient absorption? Researchers at McMaster University have supportive evidence that bacteria residing in the gut inﬂuence brain chemistry and behaviour. When there was a change in the gut ﬂora of the test subjects, increased anxiety and behaviour change was noted. Digestive imbalance can cause an imbalance to your “happy hormones”.
What about heavy metals?
Do you have amalgam dental ﬁllings? Have you worked in the mines? Or in close contact with metals such as an electrician using copper wiring? Do you use copper cookware? Or drink from copper pipes? Heavy metals are linked to depression, fatigue, erratic moods, digestive problems and other neurologic issues. HRT and use of the pill can all cause copper to increase – this is because of the high levels of oestrogen; the likely symptoms could be unexplained headaches, PMS, depression and mood swings.
Have you heard of Pyroluria?
It is a genetically determined metabolic condition. It is characterised by having elevated kryptopyrroles in the urine. If you have this condition your demand for certain nutrients (particularly B6 and zinc) is high. These two nutrients are essential for neurotransmitter production, such as serotonin and dopamine. Pyrolurics are more likely to suffer with depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, autism, alcoholism, temper outbursts, IBS, or strong fatigue.

mazingly, cardamom is actually related to the ginger family. There are two main types of cardamom – green and black (or brown), and there are also two varieties of the black. The green cardamom is the most common, being used in a variety of cuisines, including sweets, ranging from Scandinavian, Middle Eastern to Sri Lankan and Indian. They have a light green pod and highly aromatic, almost camphor-like. Inside they contain tiny brown seeds. In the black varieties you have the Indian cardamon pods which are long, woody, smell smokey and are also used in Sri Lankan and Indian cooking. Then you have the more rounded Asian or Chinese cardamom. These look more like a nutmeg and smell musty and again, like camphor. They are mainly used in Asian cuisines and are a common ingredient in a Chinese Master stock. On the health front, cardamom contains antioxidants and is high in iron, potassium and anganese.
he Ayurvedic way of balance is to take the six tastes every day. Namely sweet, salty, bitter, pungent, sour and astringent foods are to be consumed within each meal. Bitter taste is cooling, cleansing, alkaline and lowers blood sugars also good for weight loss. Modern society has lost the connection with natures alkaline herbs and instead eats meals of predominately sweet, sour and salty. Eat a bitter leaf with as many meals as possible, the ancients would chew a neem leaf. Also avoid excess processed, sticky sweet, cold foods. A

great way to improve digestion and to incorporate the six tastes in every meal is to learn the art of chauncing. A chaunce is spices, mildly cooked in ghee to flavour your dishes. Heat a tablespoon of ghee over a moderate to low flame, add a teaspoon of black mustard seeds which will pop after a few seconds. Turn down the heat once they start popping, add 2 teaspoons of cumin seeds and stir for 30 seconds. Fresh grated ginger is also added at this point. Add ½ tsp fenugreek seeds and ¼ tsp of asafoetida. Stir and remove from the heat. You have diffused the flavour and energies of the spices into the ghee. You can either throw this chaunce into a dahl, over a pot of cooked rice or into a pot of seasonal steamed vegies. If you are not fond of having too many crunchy seeds in your meal feel free to scoop out excess seeds from your ghee before adding the chaunce to your dish. Always use a good quality ayurvedic salt to balance the dish and satisfy the taste buds. eumundimedicineman.com.au

Rice ½ cauliflower ¼ cup of pine nuts 1 clove of garlic Porcini (or you can use Shitake or even Swiss Browns if your budget doesn’t stretch to the exotics). 3 sliced porcini marinated for 2 hours in macadamia oil, squeeze of lime juice and a dash of ACV (apple cider vinegar, S&P). Pulse the cauliflower, pine nuts and
garlic in your food processor. Place enough into a soup plate to cover the bottom. This is your rice. Pour over the sauce to just cover the rice. Tear pieces of rinsed Cavolo Nero (also called Scott’s Kale), ordinary curly leafed kale or even spinach and place around the dish. Finish off with the turnip parmesan over the top. Irritable bowel syndrome and bacteria: Can these be making you unhappy? WORDS SUZI LE FANUE – Nutritionist, Medical Herbalist And Naturopath
appiness, mental clarity, energy, tolerance, libido, motivation: Can these be influenced by your digestive system or Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)? We all know the feeling of butterflies in the tummy when we are nervous, gut wrenching when we are severely stressed. But what about on a day to day basis, can the digestive system, also known as “the second brain” influence your mood and behaviour? And if it can, what is causing it? One area of IBS that is often completely overlooked is the role of what I call “functional bacteria”. There are some bacterias that aid digestion, and some that can slow it down, some that increase gas and others that alter the speed your bowels empty. Research into this area is very promising. In 2007 a paper was published in the journal Gastroenterology. This research showed that when there is an alteration in the digestive immune system the subject’s

gut became more hypersensitive and this is what then could result in the symptoms that an IBS sufferer would experience. “Foreign bacteria” have the potential to trigger the digestive immune system and make it more hypersensitive. Other research published in Digestive Diseases and Sciences last year found that a large percentage of IBS sufferers actually had Small Intestinal Dysbiosis (SIBO). So perhaps the large intestines are a reflection of the imbalance in the small intestines? If you suspect your stress levels influence your gut function, you are probably right. Did you know that the gut is strongly influenced by the brain and vice versa? Acetylcholine and serotonin are neurotransmitters that cause your bowels to move along, adrenaline does the opposite and can make your bowels stop moving. These chemicals are also responsible for controlling mood, energy, sleep and stress levels. An imbalance of these
can cause all sorts of changes in bowel movements, hence why just increasing fibre in your diet or taking a probiotic will usually not be sufficient. So should you be taking supplements or changing your diet? Well it depends if the IBS is of bacterial, fungal, hormonal, emotional or food intolerance origin. We have all seen the myriad of probiotics for sale in pharmacies, but how do you know which one you need? Some people can handle more raw food, some handle cooked food better. The best way to ascertain what sort of treatment would best suit you is to perform a combination of testing, such as hydrogen breath tests, stool tests and food intolerance tests. The Eco Tan Story: In 2010 Sonya’s youngest sister (who was 30 years old at the time) noticed a freckle with a red scale on the front of her arm and finally convinced her doctor to take a biopsy. The results revealed she had stage one melanoma, which required surgery and left her with a very deep scar. Since that time, she became very conscious of looking after her skin and avoiding sun exposure but one of the things she looked for and couldn’t find was a safe, organic, self tan product. 14
Because Sonya was in the hairdressing industry for years, she took it upon herself to find her sister a safe selftanning product. This took Sonya on a big search and she researched the ingredients in various beauty products and found that so many companies claimed to be ‘natural’ or ‘organic’ but were far from it. She was horrified by how many petrochemicals and carcinogenic substances were in cosmetics. Sonya says fragrances and dyes are the most commonly used
substances in cosmetics and they are the most dangerous. The cosmetic/beauty industry is currently unregulated and Sonya believes we should have a labelling system that gives people a breakdown of the percentage of ingredients that are organic and non-organic. At this time, it’s up to consumers to educate themselves, read labels and buy Australian certified organic because of their strict guidelines and processes. The fake and misleading claims in

the beauty industry angered Sonya but she used that energy to propel her to make changes and educate people and she decided to make her own certified organic tanning products. At the same time this was happening, Sonya’s life went through massive upheaval. Her husband at the time rang to tell her he had found someone else, so she found herself as a single mum, with two young daughters ( 3 and 7 years old) and no money. So she had a lot of fire in the belly and channelled this into her work. Then in 2011 the Eco Tan product she developed was the first and only organic self tan product to be certified by the Organic Food Chain! Eco Tan is available to buy in a variety of outlets and can also be applied as a spray tan in many beauty salons around Australia. And you are not going to look jaundiced! Sonya says she uses chocolate and grape skin as colours which look natural on the skin. Sonya also says faster is not better! Her tans take four hours to develop and says she wouldn’t go near a two hour tan as some have a chemical in them to break the skin’s barrier. The Eco Tan product sits on the skin’s dead skin layer and so doesn’t penetrate the blood stream. Sonya has won awards (more recently she won International Women’s Day Business Leaders Award) and feels humbled and a bit surprised by the accolades as she keeps so focussed and doesn’t often stop to realise what she has achieved and created. Sonya says there is so much more to do! And her vision is quite altruistic rather than building a company so she can retire early on a yacht. “What I would like to do is make a difference and support charities and missions and change the community,” she says. What does Sonya do to nurture herself and her skin? 1. Avoid lots of sun exposure – I know health experts who recommend 20 minutes of early morning sunshine and that’s fine but she says some people can and others may not be able to do this. 2. I use paw paw and aloe vera on my skin (from the garden) for bumps and scratches. I also use certified coconut oil
on my skin daily on the face and body. Nature is simple and has the answers! 3. I feed my spirit with prayer and God’s word – I love the power of words! 4. I’m not on any extreme diet but the meat, fruit and veggies I buy have to be certified organic. I won’t compromise on that. 5. My friends try to encourage me to relax and do yoga but I find peace by being active and in the last 6 months I’ve joined a running group which is great for managing stress and to be with like minded supportive people. I get up at 4am and train and I will also do a health retreat once a year. 6. It’s important to build your own
community and find a way of moving your body that you love – that will sustain you. Don’t try to do an activity just because people say that’s what you’ve got to do. Over the next twelve months Eco Tan will be moving offices to a bigger spot on the Gold Coast and the product will be launched in NZ, Europe and the USA. Sonya says she is also driven to bring out more certified organic, holistic products that people can afford. So many people are talented and have great ideas but so many are paralysed by fear! It shocks me – this fear of failure that people have…failure doesn’t even exist – it only exists if you stop. I’ve failed thousands of times but I don’t stop.
Have faith in yourself and keep going. Don’t over commit. I didn’t get a loan, I started small and grew it bit by bit. I was hairdressing in my shed till 11pm so I could aﬀord to buy ingredients to start formulating the ﬁrst batches of Eco Tan. Let it grow organically, if it’s meant to be it will, don’t force it.?
Be aware of the thing called fear – the battle is in your head.
Get good advice! A big international company copied one of my products and then tried to sue me. With the help of a local lawyer I won the case after 18 months and the lawyer I hired didn’t charge me a cent.
I don’t focus on the negative or toxic people. If there is something I need to look at myself I will. I’m all about self development but I don’t let people destroy me. I don’t engage them and I keep moving forward.

id you know your skin is the largest organ of the body? It is a fabulous invention of creation as it does so much for us. Metaphysically skin has a specific ‘job’: • Protection • Breathing life • Self acceptance • Self image • Guilt • Sensuality • Sensitivity I wanted to share about a client that did a session about her skin. She had always experienced skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis and general rashes. She also had asthma. Let’s share Cindy’s story (name changed for confidentiality). Cindy was a very sensitive girl and struggled with life. She was sensitive to harsh and abrasive surroundings, including: chemicals, noises and electronic equipment. School for her was torment as she felt exposed, as though
everyone could see her faults. She never felt like she fitted in her skin. She had no self acceptance and her self image was very negative. The image she saw of herself was unattractive, worthless, uneducated and useless. She did not accept any beautiful things about herself but she did accept the negative perceptions of herself. She felt guilty for everything. She denied her sensuality and sexuality. With these subconscious beliefs her skin was red, irritated, dry and in desperate need of life. Cindy’s skin was always flaky. Sometimes she would be so irritated at her own self image that she would scratch herself until she bled. Cindy needed to ‘see’ her real self – the beauty within and accept that she was a hologram of perfection according to quantum physics. In her dermis or true skin layer she was suffocating and this led to asthma. Cindy noticed that each time she loved
something or someone she felt as though she was not good enough to have these. She created an allergy to things she desired. Her biggest love and passion was working with dogs and yet she was so allergic to them. She did not breathe in a life of love and all the brilliance she was allowed to have and was her natural universal right to have. This all stemmed back to a memory of sensuality and her feeling the waves of life through her skin as a small child. She would try to explain the heartbeat of life to adults who told her it was bad and showed her the emotion of guilt. Cindy commenced a journey of self discovery to ‘peel back’ the layers of self loathing. To look at Cindy now she has grown into her skin and she said, ‘I fit in my skin now’. n Body Consciousness® when something is happening in your skin we look at it from this point of view – it’s trying to say something. Whether it’s a rash, eczema, an itch, a blemish, stretch marks, moles, pimples, patchiness, dry or oily etc… there is something behind it. Gathering the awareness will make a difference. Where can you start to explore? Two areas to start exploring and looking at are… 1. “All Over You” or someone else close to you… 2. You may be “Covering Up” something, or someone close to you is. 1. All Over Me When “All Over Me” comes up via your skin, it is suggesting just that, something is all over you, or someone else! You will usually know it but do not want to admit it. Most likely because you don’t know how to address it, communicate effectively, how to handle it OR you don’t have a positive outcome to suit you. For example, you may be in a relationship you know is not right for you or has simply run its course. It’s not giving you the love and warmth you deserve or you have grown and evolved from it. family, the material possessions, what people will say; will the ‘other side’ be better? What if it is not? So you stay in it ignoring the obvious every single day. Your skin suffers greatly here. It feels no gentle touch, affection or excitement, and skin really loves to be touched and nurtured.

It senses the cold in the connection and therefore no growth happens or has not happened for a while. It feels the heat when tension builds and creates contraction and disharmony. Because you ignore this or pretend it is not what it is, the skin starts to shrink, shrivel up, AGE way too fast and can start to attract unnecessary growths and problems.
2. Covering Up
There are always infinite ways to move forward in any situation. Asking your body what other possibilities exist is a great way to start moving forward. YOUR body, if you let it, will let you know ways out of situations and ways forward you may have never considered or thought possible. Life will not only support you when you first admit that you are in a situation that is all over you, it will support all involved; the greater good! When you are open to look at things like, unhappy relationships, unfulfilling jobs, empty homes, fake friendships, never ending debt; just to name a few; your body will begin the

These cover-ups are usually big things, things that you can make very significant or overwhelming if we bring it out in the open. Things that you believe will hurt other’s feelings or create chaos within families. A client once brought me her daughter because she had quite severe acne. When the girl, aged 13, was on the table, I tested her body and noticed straight away it was turning away from me. Cover-up came up and quickly I could discover she was covering something up from her mum. So for this young girl, masturbation came up! Tricky subject to chat about, however only always trusting a body, I bravely mentioned it to the young girl. I asked the mother would she mind stepping in and speaking up if I was going over any personal boundary in
relation to her point of views on sex and masturbation. The mother agreed and it was an uncomfortable situation for her to be exposed in as well. So I opened with saying,”we are about to talk about something that can be quite uncomfortable to chat about. All you need to do is listen to the information! The parts you like and feel ok with, you can learn from and feel good about. The parts you feel uncomfortable with or are not sure of you can either; let go of, don’t take them on, ask me questions on OR ask mum. A result of this conversation will be that your skin will clear up.” Masturbation is normal and a wanting to discover what your body can do is normal too. Different discoveries happen at different times, depending on your development. Her mum emailed the next day, saying that she noticed a big difference in her daughter’s energy and commented just how much more open her daughter was in general. Two weeks later, I received an email from both the mother and daughter saying that her skin was completely free from the many pimples and blemishes she was experiencing, and the daughter was very, very grateful! bodyconsciousness.com.au

Being in the skin you’re in
hen you wake up in the morning and catch sight of your body in the mirror, what do you say to yourself? If your body were your best friend, would you treat it more kindly? What if you could create a communion with your body and create your body the way it would like to be? The Body or the Being? Would you be willing to consider that you are not your body? And would you be willing to explore the nature of your connection with your body and ask – What does my body know? The notion that there is a difference between your being and your body allows you to become aware of your body’s abilities to heal itself, to choose what it would like and it allows you to receive the information and awareness that your body has been trying so hard to give you. Pain, discomfort, indigestion, headache – what if these were all ways that your body communicated to you what it is requiring? Have you been listening? Who gets hungry, your being or your body? Who gets tired, your being or your body? And who desires sex, your being or your body? The purpose of a body is to have fun! Is it fun for your body to feel the sun on the skin, to be touched, or to walk in the grass, on the sand or in the water? Is it fun to have really great sheets and a feather bed?
Would you like to learn how to connect with your body? There are many things you can begin to do to create communion with your body. Nurture – When you wake in the morning, gently touch or stroke your body for a few minutes. Run your hands over your arms, over your legs, your stomach, your chest. Touch it as if it belongs to someone you care for very much. Stop the judgment – Come out of judgment of yourself for not being perfect. Judging your body is not the way to change it. Instead acknowledge it and ask it – What would it take for it to change? Questions – Ask your body questions and pay attention to the awareness you get. What would your body like to wear? What would your body like to do? What would your body like to eat? Gratitude – One of the most important things you can do for your body is simply have gratitude for it in every moment. Be in communion with your body instead of fighting against it all the time. Do one thing a day to nurture and appreciate your body. ‘The Brightside’ of Life! WORDS VANESSA FINNIGAN
isa Steele is a lady with a big heart and a transformational mission! Born in south west England (in an energetically charged part of the world near Stone Henge) Lisa was brought up in a big family, of Irish decent and they were very caring and community oriented. She said they also gave her the gift of allowing her to be free to be herself. Lisa was clairvoyantly gifted from an early age and had a dream of becoming a nurse and being of service to humanity. From the ages of 7-14 years she used to help out as a carer in a local nursing home and has always liked assisting people. “All my life I’ve had a desire to help people,” she said. In her adult years she widened her interests and worked in a variety of mainstream fields: accounting, promotion, she was an agent for the biggest bridal dress and fashion company in the World, and she was also very creative, making jewellery and selling her exclusive pieces widely. She was highly successful at every field she turned her hand at and she could always ‘see’ what
was required, and helped people from all backgrounds in many different ways. Eventually her high flying successful lifestyle had an impact on her health and relationships so she sought medical advice and investigated alternative treatments. During this time of healing she was introduced to Reiki, BioEnergy, acupuncture, meditation and went to many workshops and was introduced to many teachers along the way. She healed her back problems with osteopathy and chiropractic work (even though she was told she would be in a wheel chair). And after her health improved, she volunteered at a nursing home and helped many people whose health had deteriorated to die respectfully and with peace (she saw many people cross over and the spirits around them). Lisa was starting to actualise her full healing gifts but at the same time she acknowledged her body was still in need of more healing. In subsequent years, she experienced a lot of change and loss in her life and she found herself in a very dark place. She realised at

36 years of age that she wasn’t able to have children and experienced a deep emptiness. She arrived in Australia and had an emergency hysterectomy and blood transfusion due to haemorrhaging from a gigantic fibroid lodged in her uterus. She also reached out to a range of caring healing practitioners to build up her strength and manage her pain and as result she was able to leave hospital three days early and went on to fully recover. “I believe I had to go through this to really be able to help others,” said Lisa. She continues to work on herself and has trained with the ‘best of the best’, internationally (becoming a soul coach through Denise Linn and an angel intuitive through Doreen Virtue), so it’s her dream now to share her wisdom. Lisa has been in Australia for the last two years and says it’s an amazing place to live and fulfil her dream, “The vibration and openness of this country is second to none,” said Lisa. And her dream of creating a healing centre in Australia came to fruition after meeting business partner Mike who believes in

Out of all the amazing places in Australia, Lisa felt guided to set up a healing centre on the Sunshine Coast and searched far and wide until she found the right energy at Brightside, Mt Mellum. ‘Brightside’ was previously a healing centre to support wives during the war and she said the energy of this space even today, is so uplifting and amazing. Lisa has already gathered a talented bunch of therapists and will seek more to join her team. She will allocate 20% of profits received from healing work and fashion shows at the centre to create a free service for people with dementia and cancer to stay and heal or rest. This will provide a very unique respite service and much needed in the community. A variety of modalities will be used ncluding: oxygen therapy, salt caves, various healing modalities, workshops and coaching. “So many people don’t allow themselves to receive and we wanted to create this healing centre to pay it forward.”

The biggest questions I hear again and again is “ How do I not lose myself?” To which I might ask “Who did you decide you were that you had to give up in order to be with some one else?” The trouble is that when you’re stuck in a loop like that, there are no questions in your universe. We know that the universe likes to reward us, and it can’t reward us if we’re not asking a question. And so it’s about living in the question of what you’re looking for in a relationship and living in the question of who you’d like to be and what you’d like to create for your life. Living in the question is what keeps you moving forward. It’s what keeps you creating the life and relationships you truly desire. Here are a few questions you could try asking when you begin to feel as though you are losing yourself in a relationship. 1. What’s one small thing that I could choose today? 2. Who does this belong to? 3. What else is possible? Creating the right relationships for YOU is about YOU. Not your partner, your boss, husband or your child telling you who they want you to be. It’s the willingness and the clarity and the presence to actually step into you as the
shiny, brilliant, wonderful being that you truly be. Wouldn’t you think that people would be attracted to the shiny brilliance of you? Relationship by the definition of this reality means the distance between two objects. What I am suggesting is a Conscious Relationship beyond this reality where you have no need to separate and disconnect from your true self, from true choice and from consciousness. What most of us are looking for and rarely see is a conscious relationship: one that radiates communion, contribution and oneness. True communion has no judgment and is based on contribution. Contribution is the willingness to be with someone and receive everything they are without requiring anything of them. In oneness, everything exists and nothing is judged. ccording to a recent Chiropractors Association of Australia report, back pain affects 2 million Australians each year. “This is such a widespread problem that impacts us all,” says Dr David Hendrey, Chiropractor from Lake Kawana. “When one person in the family is suffering, everyone else gets affected. The cost is pain, decreased productivity and increased stress which is enormous.” With 19 years of clinical practice and 9 years as a CAA board member Dr Hendrey has gathered extensive experience and knowledge. “Sadly I have noticed an alarming trend is the last five years with stress becoming a major cause of irritation on the spine and nerve system. When we are under stress, the hormones cortisole and adrenalin are released, causing increased heart rate, respiration rate, our nerves get pre-excited and our muscles get ready for a fight or flight response. At the same time our digestive system, our immune system
and reproductive system are temporarily down-regulated or in layman’s terms: reduced in functioning while all the body’s resources are channelled into fighting off the stressful situation.” The problem occurs if the stressful situation is ongoing then our body can’t get out of this physiological state. Chiropractic work can’t reduce the cause of the stress for you, but it can release the tension building up in your body. “Your spine is an engineering masterpiece, with 24 movable bones joined together with ligaments, muscles and discs. The unique shape of the bones of the spine allows protection to the spinal cord. Unfortunately the spine can begin to tighten and stiffen up thru poor posture, injuries and accidents or even stress,” he says. hat we are doing in the breathing meditation is gaining greater control over our faculty of attention. Attentionalcontrol is the ability to notice where our mind is, and to direct it in the way we would like. For this reason you can also think of breathing meditation as the process of gaining mastery over the mind. How wonderful! The whole practice can be summed up as follows: (1) the mind starts chattering/gets distracted, (2) you notice this, and (3) you bring it back. As Jack Kornfield says, this practice is similar to training a puppy. You place the puppy of attention in one spot and tell it to “stay”. Soon enough the puppy has run off into fantasies belonging to the past, present or future. At this point it is very natural to get frustrated. Yet our job is not to get angry with the puppy for acting in its nature, but simply to notice that it’s running: “Ah… the mind has run off!” At this point, our job is to kindly and firmly return it to its place on the ground of breath and the body. Again you tell it to “stay” and again, it runs off. With patience, kindness, and firmness, we continue to bring the mind back. By doing this with acceptance and non-judgementally, we learn that we are not bad or wrong for having a chattering mind. And this is how the puppy of our attention gets trained.

How is your

ur skin is an amazing organ. It reflects our internal thoughts at the speed of light. We only need to think something and our feelings are reflected automatically on our face. We flush when embarrassed, go white when in shock, sweat when we’re anxious and glow when we’re happy! We don’t often talk about the ‘Second Skin’ that we wear that holds the energy of our emotions. Often referred to as the ‘Etheric Body’ this skin assists us in healing, bouncing back from illness and keeping our immune system strong. Energy healers often focus on this ethereal body to repair the physical body. When we are parenting, it can be challenging to know how to keep our children healthy. Sometimes we feel lost in knowing what to choose to feed them especially when they react and have sensitivities. There is a lot we can do to assist our children by understanding their etheric body. Sensitive children need our extra help in boosting their
etheric body. As we know children grow into teenagers. Hormones affect moods; however they can be regulated by this amazing resource. To know how to keep our children’s second skin healthy, we first need to know our own. Children are an extension of us energetically. They carry our ‘stuff’ unconsciously. I have seen children’s physical symptoms disappear the minute (or soon after) their parent took care of their own emotional reality. Take a moment to reflect on the second skin that you have. You know, the one that holds all your emotions, that makes you feel vulnerable, that tells you when your ‘space’ is being invaded. How is it feeling right now? Scan your body and sense whether you feel any areas that are shut down or walled off? Are there any areas that feel open? Sense where you feel clear too. We can do an energetic detox at any time. Perhaps we are holding onto or carrying other people? Maybe we lost sight of trusting their journey is their
own? Perhaps we’ve put ourselves in charge for too long? If so, our second skin can wear thin. We become reactive, tired and emotionally charged. We isolate, seek solace in overeating and other medicating behaviours. Downloading the etheric body can be as simple as the affirmation ‘I now release that which is no longer mine’ or ‘I now release barriers to living my life purpose’. We can even visualise letting someone go into a great big pair of hands. We detox our body, however our second skin is the one that repairs our body quicker, assists us to heal and reduces the effects of disease. Love the second skin you’re in! Deep Connection through the Skin W WORDS GAYLYN AITKEN
hen asked to write this article on skin from the perspective of a massage body worker, I was excited, as my relationship with skin has evolved from merely massaging our most superficial fascia to effect a change on a deeper muscular level, to a profound awareness of the interplay within our entire organism. Gil Hedly of Integral Anatomy said something to the effect of, ‘the only thing that separates us into parts (muscles, bones, fluids, fascia) is the scalpel’. We started life as a single cell therefore every cell in our body contains the memory of that single beginning, linking our entire being together as family members. There is no movement that occurs to or within our body that doesn’t resonate throughout our entire being. The manner in which our most superficial fascia responds to touch will be mirrored in our deeper internal fascia… massaging the inner body through superficial contact. This epiphany has led me to explore different depths, rhythms and motions in my bodywork. I’ve found the lightest of touches generated by compassionate
awareness can oftentimes effect the most profound change deep within. Our skin is the interface between the outside and our inner universe, responding immediately to stimulus and sensations. Recognising this within us allows us to approach a person with respect and not with intent to ‘fix’ or ‘heal’. A preset agenda will bypass the subtle messages transmitting through skin. The situation that arises from this is a manipulative push towards a determined outcome and a resistance response, felt as tension. This sets up a cycle of push/shove between client and therapist with the therapist being the ultimate loser as they expend precious energy trying to change that, which resists change. Mechanical palpation and manipulative techniques in themselves can’t provide the needed respect and awareness of another’s situation to restore dynamic function. The ability as a massage body worker to tune in to another’s experience can only be realised through compassionate exploration of one’s own humanity,
finding answers and solutions within the intelligence of our own body. The more we know of ourselves the more open we are to recognising the language of others’ needs. The deeper we delve into ourselves the broader our perspective becomes, increasing our flexibility for situational resolution. In my personal experience it’s not enough to just massage someone and get paid, I need to get something deeper and more profound and this I’ve been able to do by approaching every massage bodywork as an opportunity to increase my nervous system coherency, open to the subtle messages transmitted from the being under my hands, moving to the rhythm of their primal choreography, creating space for them to spiral out of tension patterns and awaken memories of effortless fluid motion. Get moving – Most of us are less active through winter and so are our dogs. Regular daily exercise is important for keeping your dog fit and for releasing endorphins that keep your dog’s tail wagging. Rather than taking an extra class at the gym, try taking a nice walk with your furry friend instead. 2. My aching bones – Many dogs, particularly elderly ones or those suffering from joint or muscle disorders, find winter a painful time. By looking out for any increased stiffness in your dog you can take steps to relieve its pain and make the cold nights far more bearable. 3. Don’t share your pudding – As your dog warms your feet while you tuck into some nice pudding, resist the
temptation to share it with your best friend. Your dog doesn’t need extra fat for winter and if it is being less active, it may actually need less. 4. Let’s get physical – Physical therapies such as massage offer natural pain relief and help relieve stiffness brought on by the cold. Whether it be a nightly rub down at home or a professional treatment these therapies can greatly ease aches and pains. 5. Food as medicine –There are many things that you will find in your pantry that can boost your dog’s health. Add some turmeric, flaxseed oil, sweet potato, carrots or blueberries to your dog’s diet or try some super foods such as chia seeds, coconut oil or wheatgrass. 6. Heaven scent – Essential oils can be a powerful tool for both emotional and physical issues in dogs. Try diffusing oils or add to massage oils: lavender (analgesic, calming) peppermint (antiinflammatory, anti-viral), eucalyptus (ant-viral, antifungal, fleas) or ginger (energising, aids nausea, digestive issues). 7. Doggy fashion – Just because dogs have fur coats doesn’t mean they don’t need protection from the elements.

What is an Equine Therapist? And why do horses need therapists?
ueenland based animal healer, Jo Phelps works in a very unique way with horses. Having studied with Equinology, she is a local certified Equinology Equine Body worker (EEBW). Using her anatomy knowledge she massages the horse from head to toe, combining a variety of modalities using her hands to feel and reading the response given. Particular attention is given to the muscle insertions and origins, bellies, stress and nerve points and posture and balance compared side to side. From observation one gets the idea that by stimulating the body and the blood flow, the circulation improves and hence the tissue is able to receive the nutrition it requires as well as flush out the toxins. Also if there are muscles in a contracted state not switched off, they are unable to receive the blood flow they require and will waste. In turn this will cause compensatory issues.
However it is clear that there is far more going on here. Unexplainable to an extent but the energy, feel and understanding between the horse and therapist is electric. It is as if the two are one. There is a lot of chewing and yawning going on and after the session if the horse was any more relaxed he would have been on the ground snoring! Then there is the science! Thermal imaging allows us to see under the skin and is one of the best noninvasive tools at our disposal to see in real time activity in muscle, tendon and ligaments. The FlirE60 camera Jo uses detects electromagnetic radiation emitted and represents it on a colour palette display. The camera detects temperature differences to 0.5 degree whereas as humans we can only detect variances
of 2 degrees therefore before there are signs of lameness or inflammation we know of an impending problem. Quite often with horses and humans alike in order to protect a sore leg we adapt a new way of movement and in doing so put strain on the hips, back or neck and voila yet another sore spot which over time can progress to be worse than the initial injury. Now this situation really enhances the potential of thermal imaging. The whole horse can be imaged and often an injury in the hind end transfers to the forelegs. Following this procedure has pinpointed issues which have previously gone undetected as we tend to focus on only one front leg for example when perhaps it was the hamstrings of the opposite hind leg. What’s under the surface? WORDS MARY-LOU STEPHENS
he other morning I had a vision of the reality of life. It wasn’t profound. It was prosaic. Ordinary but delicious. The vision was of a cake. In this vision I saw a big round cake with icing on the top and one of those decorative cake wrappers around the circumference. I had to do an internet search to find out what those paper wrappers are called. They’re called cake frills. Even though most of them aren’t frilly. In my vision I saw that the life we know and experience is the same as that cake frill. Thin and inedible. It might look pretty but to eat the cake you have to take off that cake frill and discard it. The real deal, the delicious, dense and deep stuff, is the cake. But we don’t see it, we don’t experience it, because all we see is the cake frill and we think that’s all there is. It’s an unsatisfying way to be and live, convinced that a tasteless piece of pretty paper is the sum total of our existence. But we all agree that it’s all there is to life and that the prettier the cake frill the better our lives are. If anyone dare mention that perhaps this piece of paper is just a wrapping and nothing more, that the real experience is underneath and that this real experience is huge and deep and delicious beyond description, then they are derided. Scoffed at for being mad, deluded, odd, poor, ugly and probably frigid to boot. How dare anyone question the
validity of our cake frills! I realise also that this is how I judge most people. I see their external wrappings and all my thoughts are clouded by that wrapping. The car they drive, the house they live in, the way they look, their teeth, their hair, their skin. Their cake frill. I get distracted by it because this is all I’ve been taught to see. The words we say are cake frills as well. We all want to impress, entertain, engage and prove our worth by our words. Cake frills for the ears. We take people at surface value, often too afraid to see or hear beyond that paper wrapping. Anything more is dangerous. Even if we realise that the true reality is beyond the cake frill, even if we sense that the real stuff of life is exquisitely delicious, the thought of removing that wrapping and discarding it is terrifying. We will never be able to go back. Once the cake frill is gone we will never fit in to this world again. We will be lonely. Outcast. Fear is the thing we use to keep ourselves from having the cake. It is the thing that keeps us believing the cake frill is all there is. And so we live in the narrowest of realities. A sliver of paper just a breath away from heaven. lanet Jupiter is the big one – in fact it’s the biggest in our solar system and is located in the middle part of our system just before ringed Saturn. It’s often visible in the night sky with its four visible moons circling it – they can be seen in any decent telescope when you focus on Jupiter. What’s its purpose and meaning in your astrology chart – Jupiter tells you where you are to be large and expansive. It rules the improvement side of your life, higher education and your bigger picture of life. It can take many forms such as overseas travel, exploration of other cultures, higher education, religious studies and outdoor or athletic activities, and even horse riding. The move into Cancer expands into a whole new area of spiritual growth for humanity. Back on June 24th, following the Winter Solstice, Jupiter moved into Cancer initiating a year where
humanity’s path is centred on bringing in new expressions of family, home, belonging, loyalty and responsible nurturing. It spends about twelve months in a sign. Cancer is the zodiac sign that honours the past and our true roots. The sign Cancer reminds us to be grateful for and honour all the types of support we receive. Acknowledging the support you get from others – family, friends and children, is so important. The next twelve months is a good time to begin reaching out to your neighbours, or within your own group of friends to develop stronger threads of connection and support. What Cancer understands about creating healthy community is that it’s best when we start small and intimate, and grow from there. Some of the most enlivening ways can be the small projects of connecting to the earth where you get your hands dirty. Say for example,
building a community garden, learning a new way of composting, mulching or rainwater harvesting. It’s time to recognise the Earth as our home, create a new Earth family by expanding our global community to encompass all races and colours. Open out to opportunities like Facebook for example, where you can share positive projects around the world. This period we are now in has great changes – in times of great change it’s often easy to just shut down emotionally because of all the dramatic things going on in the world, and to forget how much we need one another. Jupiter supports us in opening up enthusiastically to new ways of expanding the world and our regional groups until mid next year. Use it with foresight.
