Even the word â€˜dietâ€™ feels like a nice way of saying â€˜self-tortureâ€™â€Śbut hey, if it works, cool! What if there was another way of listening to our bodies and discovering the joy of living, where healthy weight and body was a by product of this? How do you feel in your clothes and how do you feel in your own skin? BMI is one gauge (but primarily aimed at the standard body type) and scales also give us feedback about our weight but how many of us become slaves to these measuring tools only to find that weâ€™ve gone yo-yo again! I noticed I have put on a little bit of weight over the last few years due to a lot of sedentary computer work and also working
to tight deadlines each month (although I was pretty thin before I started the magazine). I have found it extremely useful to find different ways of moving my body on a regular basis with my favourites being: personal training, walking and dancing. I also find managing deadlines and stress in a dynamic way assists with more ease and grace in my life. These days I enjoy my body shape and a variety of foods (far more than when I was younger) and so my body has found its own â€˜happy mediumâ€™. As youâ€™ve probably guessed, this month we have a number of food and weight related articles so see what resonates with you and set your own targets. We look at the wholefood approach, the role of genes, hormones, emotions, detoxing and much more. As James Colquhoun (interviewed this month on page 12-13) says there is not a â€˜one size fits allâ€™ body type or regime. He says the key is to find the balance and develop a natural, open and loving relationship with food and ourselves.

he reasons we become overweight are strongly related to what we eat and our eating habits. Most of us are born healthy but eat the wrong foods continuously and don’t exercise. So over time this may result in weight gain and lack of energy. What do we lose by becoming overweight? Usually it’s our health, physical mobility and a happy joyful life. If you can find the right balance you will become healthy and happy again. This is a very simple principal. The TV program “The Biggest Loser” shows many real life examples of people attempting to lose weight. We can clearly see how hard it can be for some people to burn the calories during a personal training session after eating fatty and sugary foods. Personal trainer Michelle Bridges says, 80% of weight is lost by the food we eat, the other 20% by exercise. Some people learn about healthy eating from their families growing up, but if you don’t know what foods are healthy maybe it’s time to educate yourself on what your body really requires.

THE ETHICAL CHEF’S ORGANIC CHICKEN STIR FRY Ingredients for 4 generous servings: 2 large organic chicken breasts 1 bunch organic asparagus ¼ organic red cabbage 2 x handful of swiss-brown mushrooms ½ cup chopped basil leaves Stock cube – chicken 50g organic chicken pate 50g organic coconut powder 2 tbsp organic butter 1 organic lime juice 10g ginger 30g roasted capsicum paste Pepper, celtic salt to taste Directions 1. Make your stir fry sauce paste in a bowl with a cup of water and stock cube

HERBAL GLUTEN FREE WAFFLE BREAD Waffle bread can be tricky. Make sure your mix is like a pancake consistency. You can’t go wrong with adding liquid gradually… sometimes you don’t need much liquid at all. Ingredients: 4 cups cooked brown or white rice (obviously brown is better for more fibre) Assorted finely chopped herbs, we will probably use basil, mint, parsley and rosemary Seasoning of your choice Shallots Organic SR flour (approx 1 cup) Little bit of stock from making dips etc. Method: Mix the lot in a bowl and add water gradually. You may need more water, it depends on the mix. Heat a waffle iron and place around 2 heaped tablespoons of mixture into the centre of the waffle iron. Cook for approximately 7 minutes each waffle.
Serve with Vegetable pate, dips and salad.
SUNDRIED TOMATO AND BRAZIL NUT DIP This is a simple dip that you won’t find in the recipe book. Blend up 1 cup sundried tomatoes with 1 cup of Brazil nuts; add some olives, a little oil, if necessary, and use as a delicious dip or as a cheese to serve with raw vegetable pieces like broccoli and carrot.
VEGETABLE PATE 3 cups of chopped vegetables like carrot, celery and a little zucchini, 1 cup chopped parsley, 1 cup chopped shallots, 1 tsp herbamare herbal salt, ½ cup lemon juice, 1 cup tahini (sesame seed paste), 1 tbsp bragg liquid aminos. Blend all the vegetables, add remaining ingredients. Season. This can also be done with a fork and add the dried mushroom powder with a pinch of salt. This is the cream which fills the centre.
LIME INFUSED CARROT AND CUCUMBER WITH PORCINI MUSHROOM Ingredients: ½ peeled carrot ½ peeled cucumber ½ avocado Dash of cashew milk Juice of one lime 7-9 pieces of dried porcini or swiss brown mushroom (both are very nutty) – 3 of which you will need to rehydrate and use as a topping. Salt and pepper as required
Method: Spiralise the carrot and the cucumber into a separate glass bowl and add the lime juice. Do not add salt at this stage as it serves to release water from the vegetables. Mix through with your fingers and leave for an hour or so. In the grinder attachment of your Bullet, grind down 6 pieces of the mushroom (you can use more if you want a tastier cream). Replace the blender head on your bullet and coarsely break down your avocado.

rganic food is grown with the use of environmentally friendly farming methods. Organic farming avoids artificial chemical fertilizers and pesticides and instead it counts on developing a healthy, fertile soil. Organic farmers do not use genetically modified (GM) components, or expose food to irradiation. The farming of organic animals is done without any use of drugs or antibiotics. Animals raised under ‘organic conditions’ are treated with respect. For example chickens are not kept in cages and cows are not kept in feedlots. The term ‘organic’ and therefore the growing methods and cleanliness of the food is controlled by different certifying bodies. These certifying bodies set certain rules that the organic farmers have to follow. If the growing methods of the farmer are not up to standard they will not get certified. How does organic food benefit you?
There are now many research findings that show organic food, such as fruits, vegetables and grains contain a far higher content of vitamins, minerals and nutrients, whilst at the same time there are no harmful herbicides, fungicides, pesticides and artificial fertilizer chemicals involved. A higher nutritional value of your food results in less food cravings. The idea is that the body gets all the nutrition it needs out of your meal and is more satisfied and therefore does not crave anything else. Consequently, you do not want to eat as much, which could result in healthy weight management. Another benefit is that organic food tastes better, the way food used to taste. It is fuller and richer in flavour. One explanation for this could be that the slower growth of the plant causes a lower storage of water, which results in a higher

content of dry substance in the plant and that again gives organic food a higher concentration of aroma. Real Food - Real By Vanessa Finnigan
nternationally acclaimed film producers and married couple James Colquhoun and Laurentine ten Bosch blew us away with their debut film ‘Food Matters’ in 2008. This year they released their hard hitting documentary ‘Hungry for Change’ which aims to dispel the ‘dieting’ myths and offer some solutions to the obesity epidemic. This month I had the pleasure of talking with James via Skype while he was in Amsterdam. About six years ago James and Laurentine set off around the world interviewing all the top natural health experts in order to convince their beloved father (who was seriously ill) that there was hope and given the right conditions, the body can heal itself naturally! James’ dad Roy Colquhoun was
previously a business man who experienced years of chronic stress, and a fast paced fast food lifestyle. Over time Roy developed chronic fatigue, severe depression, anxiety and was bed ridden and overweight. None of the traditional treatments and cocktail of medications was improving his situation, in fact his health continued to deteriorate. James said, “It was an interesting experience for us to go through as a family. My father wasn’t offered any real hope or opportunities for healing.” Just as well James and Laurentine were passionate about food and health! They both studied nutrition through the Global College of Natural Medicine in Santa Cruz, California and consumed a plant based diet, so they knew that there
were infinite healing possibilities. The problem was convincing Roy it wasn’t some wacky, hippie, misguided spin. So after much research and investigation they chose film as a medium to reach him and as a result ‘Food Matters’ was born. It has become a question of economics and how corporations look to profit at the expense of our health. Once you start to research this, then the solution is quite simple. It’s there in front of our eyes and it’s been there for a long time and it’s fantastic to realise it is so easy. “Early on in the piece Dad was very skeptical, which is the case for a lot of people and it’s healthy to be skeptical. But I don’t look at one side of the story: you have to open yourself up to both sides of the story,” said James. He believes that it’s not about discounting orthodox methods, as everything has its place; it’s more about educating people about the power of wholefood nutrition and an holistic lifestyle. Due to James and Laurentine’s efforts to inform Roy about the alternatives, he chose to reclaim his life and remains drug-free today. By changing his lifestyle (which included his mind-set and undertaking periods of detox and then maintaining his diet with wholefoods), he lost twenty kilograms and now lives a happy life. The Food Matters film also inspired millions of people all around the world. But James and Laurentine didn’t stop there…actually they were just getting started…next issue: address the worldwide obesity problem. So they interviewed all the leading international experts once again and investigated the diet industry and food industries and decided to produce ‘Hungry For Change’ to help educate people. James explained, “When people are looking to improve their health and want to lose weight, they look for foods that are marketed as healthy products; the low

A Natural Body Image with Mindfulness By Vanessa Bushell B
ody weight is a topic that has so many socially defined expectations for both men and women. These concepts of body image often lie behind excessive self-judgement, bullying and sometimes self-abuse. Media images of body shape and size creates unrealistic standards for both genders. Short of constant visits to the gym and maintaining strict diets, the average person struggles to reach and maintain these ideals, often leading to a sense of failure and shame. The irony is that for many, when we are feeling more relaxed and happy (as well as engaging in sensible eating and exercise) our body weight will naturally adjust to a healthy norm for each person. What Really Matters When it comes to body weight, perhaps one of the most important questions we could ask ourselves is “what really matters?” Is a happy relationship
with ourselves more important than forcing ourselves to maintain a certain body weight? Sure we can make choices that embrace healthy eating and exercise, but the trick is to embrace realistic and achievable practices that can be easily maintained. Mindfulness of everyday eating and exercise practice can help us to achieve a healthy and more natural body weight than dieting or fad exercise regimes. Mindful Eating and Exercising The practice of mindfulness in eating and exercise involves bringing a gentle, open awareness into our actions, body movement, thoughts and emotions. The awareness of the physical helps us to slow down the act of eating and feel into the process, rather than mindlessly gulping down food. Likewise this practice helps us to feel into body movement in exercise. This allows us to listen to our body and its needs, rather than unconsciously pushing it in ways that eventually hurt us. Yoga and Thai Chi are great examples of mindful exercise. The psychological practice of mindfulness includes witnessing
thoughts and emotions. This allows us to become aware of patterns of comfort eating, avoidance and addiction. Often we are not aware of how behaviours of eating and exercise are really disguised attempts to avoid emotional pain. These habits become addictive and are unconscious. Mindfulness brings these patters to the surface of our conscious awareness so we can change them. After all, we cannot change what we cannot see! Re-focussing on Our Relationship with Ourselves Ultimately our relationship with ourselves, including our attitudes, our emotional well-being, self-love and compassion are the true cornerstones of healthy weight loss. As we love ourselves and life, given there is no physical condition contributing to weight gain, our weight can re-balance to our unique ‘normal’. How taste genes affect our food choices By Maureen O’Brien
t is a commonly heard excuse: “I cannot lose weight; everyone in my family is fat. It is in our genes.” Is it a valid excuse? Obesity is a complex and multifaceted issue and it affects not only our physical health but also has a huge impact on our sense of self-worth and general wellness. Recent scientific research has found that about 70 percent of obese people can thank their genes for their condition. Some genes control our leptin level; others affect our metabolism rate or insulin production. There are also genes that affect our taste and our food preferences, which make some people, crave foods that can lead to obesity. Two such genes have been identified: the taste for fat gene and the bitterness gene. The taste for so called “fat” genes has been extensively researched and its variations have been found to play a role in obesity in several ways. Studies have revealed that dietary fat is perceived not only by texture but also by taste and also show that people with a specific variation of the CD36 (taste for fat) gene have a reduced sensitivity and higher preference
for fats and fatty foods, including junk food. However at this stage its not clear if the reduced sensitivity to fat predisposes some people to obesity by boosting their craving for fat, or if the long-term highfat diet results in reduced sensitivity to fat. Either way the consequence can lead to obesity. Genetic variations in the recently discovered bitter taste gene TAS2R38 are linked to higher or lower sensitivity of some people to bitter taste, as well as preference for sweet-tasting foods and drinks. People having certain variations of this gene are simply more sensitive to bitter taste and cannot stand the flavour of, for example, broccoli or Brussel sprouts, and instead prefer sweet tasting foods. Craving for sweets and carbohydrates, so common in obese people, can now be explained, at least in part, by variations in the TAS2R38 gene together with environmental conditioning. Our newly acquired knowledge about genetic preference, of some people for fat food or their refusal to eat ‘bitter’ foods such as some fresh vegetables, can offer a
solution for obese people by helping them understand what is affecting their lives, their well being and their selfworth. It also offers opportunity for specific nutritional intervention tailored to the biochemical individual needs of a person, based on this new research. One such program is Fat on the Move, which takes into account the genetic expression of each individual and incorporates the research on leptin and insulin resistance in some people. It is based on individual food plans that include specific foods to reduce cravings for sweets, fats and carbs. Helping to reduce the appetite and the need to snack between meals to a certain degree can be controlled by the choice of foods, thus working not only on weight control, but also on all aspects of healthy body and mind. Modern humans on the other hand with our questionable ‘advanced intelligence’ spend our lives catering for our palates in a different way. Strong neural connections exist between our sense of smell, taste buds, and the comforting sensation of having something in our mouth, linking us back to mother’s comforting breast. These sensory pathways link to the limbic system of the brain associated with and stimulating our emotional memories. There is no doubt that our emotional needs/wounds are in some part satisfied by our eating patterns. Sharing food has so many connotations in our lives, being associated with all social gatherings and celebrations. This can be a joyful part of any culture however we have lost the balance.
We no longer have to learn which foods are available in any part of the country as did our aboriginal forebears, who identified the natural fruits, plant and animal seasons, living in balance with nature. If we are running late and are hungry, there is always the drive through outlets. The ready availability of fast junk foods and our tendency towards laziness has seen the growth of the fast food chains in Australia. Our teenagers feed themselves on junk cheaply, with their mates on the streets and avoid healthy family meals. And we don’t know the meaning of hungry! As a society we have grown fat, unhappy, greedy, lazy, yet quite obsessed with beauty from the ‘outside in’. hat activities do you do for you? Are they always for others and not expressing who you are? Have you ever felt suffocated in life either by the work you do or not being able to see what you can achieve? What does it mean to express yourself? Welcome to the THYROID GLAND. The thyroid gland is situated on either side of the larynx and trachea in the neck. It manufactures thyroxin which controls the body’s metabolic rate. In others words – how effectively it converts food into energy. The thyroid stores iodine. The thyroid hormone increases the rate at which cells oxidise glucose. Behind this lies the PARATHYROID gland, which controls the level of calcium and phosphorus, in the bloodstream. In addition to physical growth, these glands are also believed to affect one’s mental development. The throat chakra, linked with the thyroid gland is linked to all forms of communication, corresponds to the need for balance between rational and cerebral
approach and the emotional expression of the heart. There is another understanding of the thyroid and weight gain. Medical Intuitive Meanings of the thyroid: 1. Devotion to self 2. Communication 3. Suffocation 4. Activity 5. Expression of self Weight gain is an indicator something is happening for a person besides they are not eating correctly. Let’s give an example of the above. Mums are good examples of not devoting time to their selves – they are running after the children and putting their needs first rather than their own. Instead of making time for 40 minutes of exercise for themselves that will assist hormonal release, get the heart going and shift weight, Mums will ‘race’ around after everyone else. Then they won’t communicate what is happening for them and suppress their frustrations,
fears and concerns. This in turn makes them feel suffocated as they cannot express themselves. They feel all their activity is based around other people rather than themselves. So what can happen is that the body retains weight ‘just in case’ they need extra fuel to keep going and also to hide their ‘emotional pain’ they are feeling from themselves. The thyroid gland is so complex in its Medical Intuitive meanings and yet so simple if we listen to it directly. eight loss can seem a complicated issue and, with so many promises of a quick fix, using meal replacements or pre-packaged foods being advertised these days, it’s no wonder most of us are overwhelmed with choices and questions about what to do. Too tired or embarrassed to get out and exercise? Feeling too stressed and think there’s no time to fuss about with diet plans? Or do you ask, “Which foods do I eat? Is it nutritionally balanced?” and it all gets just too hard. Losing weight encompasses addressing a number of issues, physical, emotional and mental. The hard part is knowing where to begin to break the cycle of old patterns. The most important factors for successful and long-term weight loss are education and support. eating foods which slow down their metabolism by upsetting the delicate hormone balance of their body. ou sit there telling yourself, “I don’t want the pastry. I don’t want the pastry.” What if your body wasn’t actually wanting it, but was simply giving you the awareness that the person in the office next door was wanting the pastry? I can’t tell you how many times that was me! I used to go and eat the pastry all the while judging me and hating my body. I’ve spent so much of my life ignoring and judging my body, or judging it while ignoring it…ha ha, am I talented or what? I have to laugh every time I hear myself say, “Bodies are my new hobby.” Haven’t I had a body my whole life? But in ignoring my body what
I didn’t realise how much of my life I was cutting off. Your body is an amazing sensory organ with a consciousness of its own that is constantly giving you information about the world and the people around you. It could be tactile like a gentle touch on your skin, a comforting hug from a friend or the warmth of the sun. 1 – Set goals, on the Coast we have so many events which help us to stay active: fun runs, triathlons, trail runs, adventure races, surfing comps, rowing comps, ocean swimming events and walkathons. So research what is on for the next year ahead and plan, have fun, get excited. A lot of people don’t get involved in events because they are not prepared, so remember you can do anything if you want to, it just takes commitment and preparation. Also publicly announce what your goals are so you get support from your friends/family and you will also inspire others. 2 – Make being active part of your lifestyle, the Sunshine Coast has so many opportunities to live a happy healthy active life, appreciate it, and include your family/friends: weekend mountain climbs, national park walks, beach walks, bike rides, morning jog followed by breakfast, kayak to Bribie Island and have a healthy picnic, 3 – Be accountable, invest in YOU, get a personal trainer who can support you, motivate you, if you have that one appointment minimum weekly, it will help you stay focused for the rest of the week, it also gives you opportunity to meet other clients to build friendships with like-minded people. Join a gym, get involved in boot camps, dance classes, yoga classes, build friendships so your new friends are expecting you at each class.

Shining the light on Reflexology
hen I was approached to write a regular modality review section in Holistic Bliss from a man’s perspective, my first question was: “What is out there?” (and I’m not talking about aliens). I was somewhat perplexed, sure, there’s Swedish massage and there’s deep tissue massage and bone crunching.

And I must thank Norma Street, the reflexologist I saw. Her practice is in the front room of her lovely home nestled in the quiet hills of Buderim. She is a truly dedicated professional who takes the time to talk you through and explain the process and has the qualifications and experience to make you feel you’re in competent hands. She had me relaxed even before I had my shoes off (and I’m a little self conscious about my smelly feet). It’s a perfect process to relieve the road rage after driving home through the city traffic. As I walked down her stairs and back to the car I realised I felt the same as I do after a massive deep tissue massage but without the pain. I felt a little heady like my sinuses had been cleared, totally rejuvenated and energised. I can honestly say it’s the calmest I’ve felt for ages. Next month….how reiki has nothing to do with maintaining the garden!
What else does a guy need to know about relaxation and health? Apparently I was sooooo wrrrrrr. You would no doubt be aware that men (according to men) are never wrrrrrr, just take a look at driving, IKEA instructions (who needs to read that booklet it looks easy) and street directions to name a few. So it took me by surprise to find about m many and varied styles and modalities of m manipulative and “dare I say it” hands on th therapies out there. So yes, I may have be been a little wrongish, (the next thing I’ll be sitting in a psychologist’s chair de developing a thesis around my inability to say the word wrong when referring to m myself!) So let’s talk about reflexology. No, it h has nothing to do with having your knee ssmashed with a rubber mallet. It is actually an ancient, natural, noninvasive practise which works a treat for stress, pain, asthma, sinusitis, constipation and much more. he ‘Psychic Fairs’ story began when the Archangel Michael gave me the inspiration one day. I had travelled almost half way across the world to Hawaii to do a course with Doreen Virtue and I was shown by Archangel Michael that on my return there would be lines of people waiting for me, to give them a psychic reading. When I got home a couple of weeks after the course nothing had changed and I was feeling disheartened. Then all of a sudden my mind went blank and Archangel Michael pushed the thought through my mind. I instantly knew that I had to begin my own Psychic Fairs. This was not an easy task as we were on a single income with three children and I had spent all of my savings going to do the course in Hawaii. We didn’t even have enough money to hire the hall. So I talked to like minded friends who paid for stalls to do readings at the fair, this paid for the hall hire and things began to unfold with ease and grace! Within a week I had enough stall holders and psychics for the fair. Then the time arrived for the first
Psychic Fair – I had five psychics including myself and my mum and best friend took the bookings. We had a line up out the door at opening time and before midday there were no psychic appointments left. It was so busy; I had a smile from ear to ear for days afterwards. My heart swelled with gratitude and joy and I had never done so many readings in one day. Due to the success of the fair, I was guided to run them on a monthly basis around the suburbs in South East Queensland. Since setting up the first psychic fair I have been aware that it’s part of my life purpose to help light workers find their path, so in doing so I have created a safe uplifted environment for authentic light workers to be of service. Service is what ‘Selena Hill’s Psychic Fairs’ are all about. Archangel Michael has again asked me to step up the size of the fairs and venues to spread the light on a larger scale. We now have fortnightly fairs on both the north and south sides of Brisbane. We are also inviting 100 authentic psychics from around Australia, to be part of our 3 day fair at
the RNA Showgrounds in September. Deb Webber from channel nine’s ‘Sensing murder’ will be at the fair each day and many other respected psychics will be involved. Q: Marcus, for a 77 year old Golden Retriever, you obviously know how to take care of yourself, what are your secrets to maintaining a healthy weight? We take an holistic approach to life. While, diet and nutrition play an important role, as well as getting regular exercise, we have learnt that it is just as important to keep the mind calm and at peace. It is amazing how much stress can affect the overall health of a dog. Q: Cruz. I was impressed by the shine and softness of your coat, are there any beauty secrets you would like to share with our readers? Our owners have always given us the best food. Twelve months ago, our mum Pauline undertook further research into our nutritional requirements and started introducing more natural and raw ingredients into our diet. It didn’t take
long before I noticed the difference in Marcus’s coat as his hair is longer than mine. He (Marcus) was prone to getting hot spots, particularly during summer. This no longer seems to be an issue. A few years ago he also developed arthritis in his back legs. Since our diet has changed, his legs have improved and he has significantly more energy. I would have to say that’s the best thing of all - it is so much more fun going for walks with him than on my own. For me, I personally feel and look better for the natural foods. As they say ‘you are what you eat’. Q. Marcus, you mentioned you take an holistic approach to life, can you please elaborate further on this? To maintain optimum health, not
only is diet and exercise important, we have learnt that we aren’t completely fulfilled in mind body and soul if we are not contributing to the lives of others. Our owners have a pet care business and we often have other dogs staying with us. They can sometimes be quite stressed, being separated from their owners, but we do what we can to keep them calm and peaceful. Rest is also important for us. I guess you could say at times it is our form of meditation. Cruz and I play an important role in our family, and it is imperative that we do what we can to maintain our health so that we can return our gratitude and love to our owners. Optimal Health, Optimal Weight By Eileen McLean
besity is one of the most common nutritional disorders in companion animals. It is usually the result of either excessive food intake, or inadequate energy use, i.e. the pet needs more exercise. Optimal weight is reached when the pet is in a state of positive energy balance. When determining your pet’s optimal weight, consider their age, size, breed, exercise level and daily energy expenditure. Ideally dogs and cats should have ribs you can feel but can’t see. When looking from above you should be able to see a slight waistline. From the side, the abdomen should be tucked up. Obesity is associated with health conditions including osteoarthritis and
orthopaedic disease, cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance and diabetes, liver disease, and increased surgical risks. Overweight pets move slower, tire faster, and may suffer from heat stress during the warmer months. An overweight pet has a shorter life span and poorer quality of life, compromising its overall welfare. The main therapeutic options for obesity in companion animals include dietary management and increased physical activity. Some animals benefit from digestive enzymes and probiotics during weight loss, as these nutritional supplements can assist the assimilation and proper digestion of nutrients. Exercise should be built up gradually and carefully over time. As the pet loses weight their energy levels will improve and he or she may want to exercise longer. Exercise helps to improve metabolism, replacing fatty muscle with stronger, leaner muscle. It is of course important to be aware of any exercise limiting health conditions such as arthritis or heart conditions. Arthritis and joint problems can significantly worsen when an affected
animal is carrying extra weight due to the strain on joints. Short periods of activity throughout the day are often better than one long exercise session. Swimming is fantastic, and is a good alternative to daily walks. It strengthens muscles and joints without jarring them. The emotional bond between owner and animal is a crucial factor determining the food intake and subsequent body condition of an animal. It is easy to give tidbits between meals and sometimes we do this to appease feelings of guilt about, for e.g. leaving our pets home all day. Set meal times are important. Healthy dogs and cats don’t need to ‘graze’ between meals so it is unnecessary to leave food out during the day. It is also important to remember our pet guinea pigs, mice, rats and other animals. Often they have access to large quantities of food, but little room to expend energy. Large enclosures, play stations and activity are recommended. www.naturalanimalcare.com

Gloriously in Full Bloom and Loving it! By Katrina Zaslavsky
hy is it the less pregnant you look, the better everyone tells you you’re looking? – “You are so tiny; I can hardly tell you are pregnant!” It seems society’s weight obsession doesn’t stop at motherhood, losing sight of the fact our bodies are working magic to grow a baby. Pregnancy is a rite of passage where the woman should feel radiant and beautiful. It can diminish the beauty of this special time if we don’t feel we measure up. The media portrays beauty and the bump as a one size fits all, placing enormous pressure on women (we need to look like we have a neatly stuffed basketball under our top and then drop it the minute we give birth!) No wonder many women succumb to negative
feelings. So it’s time to remind ourselves and each other how beautiful we really are. Pregnancy means growth, on every level. You can’t give birth to a healthy, full-term baby without it. The real question is how you feel about yourself and whether you are healthy. As pregnancy progresses, you soon realise you don’t have much control over what is happening to your body (a great lesson in letting go!) and taking shape according to your genetics. So don’t compare yourself to anyone else. Watch your body transforming with awe and fascination, rather than judgement. I remember one girlfriend looked at my bump with envy and exclaimed, “You are so lucky, now you can eat anything you like and not worry about getting FAT!” The typical diet mentality is so unsavoury to my ears! Pregnancy was no excuse for a nine-month junk-food frenzy! This was time to get even more serious about my health for my baby’s sake. For those digging in and “eating for two” this has been declared a myth.
Quantity is not nearly as important as quality. Eat well – and often! Instead of three meals a day, switch to six minimeals to gain healthily, plus keep blood sugar steady. Excessive weight gain shouldn’t become an issue if you hold health as centre stage and listen to your body rather than obsess about weight. Ask yourself, “do I really want to be putting this in my body?” or “what am I really craving?” and you may find a healthier source of nourishment. Develop a healthy attitude to food and weight to pass onto your children. Above all, allow yourself to celebrate the miracle of motherhood and acknowledge the amazing work you are doing in creating and nurturing a new human being.
