much about myself, about people and about change. The extended feature we have about kids, teens and parenting this month is also something close to my heart and my intention is for it to be of support to families who are experiencing challenging times. P.S I was very aware of the collective energies creating this edition and it really is very special to feel part of this ‘Holistic Bliss adventure’… so much more to share… love you all xxx

t was five years ago when the first edition of HBM was published… back then it was 8 pages; designed and written by me and I remember jumping in the car and driving around to all the outlets distributing the magazines myself. I’m happy to say that we have many great people on board Holistic Bliss now to help as the magazine’s presence in the community continues to evolve!! I have met so many incredible souls and so many have contributed to this magazine and are shining lights in the world. Many readers over the years have told us there is something really uplifting about our magazine and it encourages them to make changes in their life. I am so inspired by this! Unlike many other publications, Holistic Bliss has grown organically at its own pace and the format and content of the magazine is very different. It hasn’t always been easy being ‘different’ in the world of publishing but I have learnt so

Who’s on the cover: It’s encouraging to find young people who are pioneers of change… Essena O’Neill is one young lady fearlessly expressing herself in the world and leading the way (check out page 14-15). What would it take for more people to find this edition and for us all to start really expressing ourselves and truly living?

Amchur WORDS VICKI TAYLOR – Queen of Spice

mchur is simply dried green mango powder. Although it may not be a spice in itself, it is considered one as it is an important component in many spice blends used throughout India and South East Asia. The Hindi word for mango is ‘Am’ and ‘Choor’ means powder. Amchur is used as a souring agent in constructed dishes. It has a pleasing tangy taste, not unlike Tamarind and it is used a lot in Thai cooking and Indian curries for balance. Amchur also has a tenderising effect on meat so is great to use as a marinade ingredient. It is compatible with other spices used for marinading like ginger, garlic, paprika, coriander seeds and leaves and pepper. If you need some lemon juice for a recipe but don’t have any at home but you do have some Amchur, you can replace three tablespoons of lemon juice with one teaspoon of Amchur powder.

Ingredients: 1 tbsp ghee 1 tsp black mustard seeds 1 tsp cumin seeds 1 tsp ground black pepper ½ tsp hing Small handful curry leaves 4 large tomatoes, chopped 3 green chillies, sliced diagonally 3cm ginger grated 3 tbsp red split lentils 50ml tamarind liquid ½ tsp turmeric 1 tsp salt

500ml water Handful of coriander leaves chopped to garnish Method: Heat the ghee in a sturdy pan over a medium heat, add the mustard seeds, cumin seeds and red chilli, fry until mustard seeds start to pop. Stir in the black pepper and hing and fry for 30 seconds, then add the curry leaves, tomatoes, green chillies, ginger, red lentils, tamarind, turmeric, salt and water and simmer for 25 minutes. Garnish with coriander leaves.

Make the Switch to Dark Chocolate this Easter WORDS SHANNON FLAVELL, Naturopath for Morlife

ith Easter around the corner, the influx of chocolate eggs and bunnies will soon be on its way. No one wants to miss out on the goodies and fun at Easter time but often this festive season is paired with feelings of guilt as we over-indulge on various chocolate temptations. So how do we find a balance between enjoyment and staying healthy? Choosing dark chocolate provides a good compromise. Dark chocolate is packed with minerals including iron, magnesium, copper and manganese. It is also a good source of antioxidants, including flavonols and polyphenols, which help to prevent free radical damage and oxidative stress within the body. What’s more, studies have found dark chocolate has the potential

to assist in the prevention of diseases such as cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome (Zomer et al. 2012). Dark chocolate may provide many of these disease-fighting effects through its ability to lower inflammation in the body: a study by Giuseppe et al (2008) found that participants who specifically consumed dark chocolate had significantly lower inflammatory markers than those who consumed any type of chocolate. Not only is dark chocolate involved in disease prevention, it may provide short term effects such as boosting mood and energy. The effect of dark chocolate on emotions and behaviour has been a popular area of interest in many research studies. Dark chocolate contains phenylethylamine, a compound involved in regulation of

energy, mood and attention (Sabelli et al 1995). Magnesium and caffeine in dark chocolate are also thought to contribute to its role in mood elevation (Benton & Donohoe 1999). These combined effects make dark chocolate an even more appealing treat! With so many health benefits, dark chocolate is certainly the better choice this Easter! What’s more, choosing options such as dark chocolate coated nuts or berries will increase the nutrition content even further. It is possible to enjoy yourself and stay health conscious. There are plenty of options for healthier treats this Easter and if you’re in the mood for chocolate, make sure you choose the nutrient-packed goodness of dark chocolate!

Food, Nutrition and Kids! WORDS SUZI LE FANUE

hese days it seems so many more children are suffering with autism spectrum disorders, ADD or ADHD, temper tantrums and general moodiness. Personally I would rather not label them, the truth of the matter is children’s behaviour is changing, and you have to wonder why? There are many theories based around it, let’s look at two of the many primary areas that I would focus on addressing. Have you heard of pyroluria? It is a metabolic condition where the person does not optimally absorb or utilise key nutrients that are needed for the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. This happens when the body produces molecules called pyrroles. These pyrroles act like magnets to many vitamins and minerals. Children with pyroluria may present with agitation, anxiety, bed wetting, clenching jaw, lack of focus, frequent tantrums, overwhelmed easily,

afraid of groups, eczema and poor sleeping patterns. The reason is these are influenced by neurotransmitters, however, with pyroluria the balance can be thrown out as a result of nutrient imbalance. My husband was diagnosed with dyslexia and ADD as a child, we have had him tested as an adult and no surprise he had a high pyrrole reading. As an adult he has responded amazingly well using the pyrrole treatment of nutritional supplementation of vitamin B6 and zinc, I only wish it was tested when he was younger. This is an area of my work that I am incredibly interested in because so many of my patients have pyroluria. A simple urine sample is all that is needed to test pyrrole levels. Treat the gut World renowned Dr Natasha McBride, author of Gut & Psychology Syndrome (also known as GAPS) treats an array of childhood conditions like those listed above purely by addressing the digestive function of the child.

The program usually comprises of bone broths, fermented foods and the elimination of foods like grains. She is a pioneer in this area, the protocol is very similar to what I offer children and families daily in the clinic. So why do we address the gut? Easy – bacteria influence the mind, the gut influences your neurotransmitters and the gut is where we absorb nutrients. There are countless strains of bacteria that are documented to influence the function of the brain, for this reason correcting any digestive problems is so important. I would usually encourage this through stool testing and then balancing the gut flora through probiotic supplementation, dietary changes and fermented foods. These few areas are just the tip of the iceberg. Areas like the child’s immunity, heavy metals, histamine levels, life circumstances, pre existing conditions like autoimmune disease all need to be addressed.

he expresses her thoughts, feelings, experiences and who she is with the world… in the process she inspires people her own age (people of all ages actually) to be themselves. And as her popularity skyrockets on social media, she continues to empower people and it’s exciting to think about the possibilities for growth and change for the next generations. Essena answered my questions like she has been doing interviews her whole life and she shared her story with real openness; the kind that is rare to find but it makes an impression on you when you experience it. While most teenagers go through confusing phases, Essena felt like her life

14.indd 1

was spiralling out of control a few years ago. From about 11-15 years of age she became more and more consumed with anxiety, self-hatred and preoccupied with losing weight. At eleven, she was a self-conscious girl with pimples who felt very different being 5’9 tall. At the age of 12 she started to feel a real pressure to lose weight fast (when there was no reason to) and this was also a time when she was coming to terms with her parents’ divorce. There were years of yo-yo dieting, excessive exercising and her mind was filled with self-loathing thoughts. Even when she lost a lot of weight for a special occasion, it didn’t bring her any more joy; in fact she said it was her lowest point… she was trying

to be skinny to be happy, and she just wanted to feel accepted and special. “I was convinced that in order to love myself I needed to prove to myself that I was worthy. We think we need to prove to ourselves that we are worthy of our own love. We need to lose weight, and then we can feel proud. We need to get good grades to then be successful. We need to stop this, start that, be this, be that… when does it end?” said Essena. “Having a negative relationship with food, with exercise, with myself and with life in general could never make me happy, or feel valued.” After reaching a point of despair, she decided it was up to her to make the choice to turn it all around (her

supportive dad, sister (Isis) and brother (Tristan) and especially her mum Jules O’Neill who is the pioneer of Body Consciousness were there to support her along the way). “I’m privileged to have a really supportive home. We are really open and share with each other rather than cover up things or be secretive. It’s about saying, ‘This is who I am’ and it’s so rewarding to feel like you and your parents are on the same page. Some of my friends thought it was weird that I was sharing certain things with my parents but then they started to do the same with their parents.” Once she started to see that she had a choice about her mind-set and how she wished to live, her world changed. She started to open up to herself and others more and more. She naturally started to exercise for fun and from a place of choice and enjoyed food; eating moderately healthy. Then at sixteen years of age she decided to share her experiences and interests via Tumblr a social media site, and people her own age responded to her realness. This in turn has empowered her to keep sharing her message with more and more people and she now has a combined social media Instagram and Tumblr following of over 400,000+ …but the most important thing for Essena is she just loves sharing and being herself! She replies to hundreds of emails every day, manages all the sites herself and finds time for her school work. She has also caught the eye of sports fashion label ‘Lorna Jane’ and many other labels which she endorses. “For awhile on social media I started sharing about health and fitness because that was socially acceptable and the norm. Thanks to my mum, I decided to really talk about what I really wanted to talk about and that’s when I got excited and motivated and I feel better when I’m talking about real things that I’m passionate about. Mum said to me, ‘All you can do is be yourself’ so I feel better being open about my experiences and personal growth,” she said. Essena has so many hopes and dreams and says when she leaves school she would like to study psychology and nutrition and transfer to New York for a year to study in 2016. She is a new breed of consciousness and her uniqueness is a refreshing change for the world…

What are the biggest concerns for young people?

Essena with her mum Jules O’Neill

I used to think body image was the biggest concern for young people but now I think the core concern is, “feeling accepted and belonging”. That covers everything else like body image, relationships problems, school issues etc. Young people are not being taught to look within themselves. It’s a consumerbased society where if you get the thing you desire then you think you can be happy rather than looking within. It’s not talked about very often. We can start thinking… What is going to make me feel fulfilled? Personal development and selfawareness is something I’d like to encourage. That’s what we should be targeting. It’s okay to feel lonely and down sometimes and it’s okay if you acknowledge the place you are in and stay present with it (rather than thinking OMG what’s happening to me) so you accept where you are at. If you look too much into the future sometimes it can get overwhelming. I also find personally, I like to find something I can do in the moment to feel better and not make it worse than it already is, or if not in that moment then the next day.

How do you deal with judgements? You are going to get judged sometimes for what you do… it is scary sometimes to feel vulnerable. I’m exposed to hateful comments daily but you know what… to be open and accepting of those is all you can do. When you are open to yourself those comments can’t get to you. Everything becomes an opportunity for growth rather than a criticism.

A few of Essena’s favourite things: • Walks in nature and mountain climbing • Yummy vegan dishes and experimenting with raw food • Living near the beach on the Sunshine Coast • Raising awareness about animal protection issues and health • I love movies… especially crying at movies • Not weighing myself for over a year

Q& A Q: Teenage behaviour – good or bad? How can I empower my teenager? A: This is a very good question to ask because what does ‘empower’ really mean. This word is an expression we talk about a lot. Each of us has our own interpretation of empowerment for the simple fact that empower means power that comes from within. We use the word for all kinds of things but it is really about courage and giving strength to others for self-improvement. So now that has been clarified what is the dictionary meaning: 1. give power or authority to and 2. to enable or permit.

WITH JEAN SHEEHAN, Principal – Millennium Education

All of these concepts are what teenagers can forget, lose and not be aware of. Now it is time to also consider human behaviour. Human behaviour is the collection of behaviours exhibited by human beings and influenced by culture, attitudes, emotions, values, ethics, authority, rapport, hypnosis, persuasion, coercion and/or genetics. The way people act falls within a range with some being common, some unusual, some acceptable, and some outside acceptable limits. The acceptability of different types of actions is evaluated relative to social norms and regulated by various means of social control. Human behaviour is an important factor in human society. In summary HUMAN BEHAVIOUR means: Performance, Action, Activity, Manners, Conduct. When we look at teenagers’ ‘bad’ behaviour we are referring to the way a child performs, acts, and conducts themselves. Depending on belief systems, cultures and customs, certain actions will appear inappropriate and unacceptable. Behavioural problems

can simply be seen as the child not conducting themselves according to specific rules, beliefs and actions. Often parents of teenagers can have high expectations of what is required from children. They forget that teenagers need to be taught how to behave and how to socialise in different circumstances as they are not a child but not an adult. Their role is not defined yet. Parents are teachers and guide their children how to behave, how to treat others and how to deal with things. We do this consciously and unconsciously. There is no such thing as a ‘bad child’. It is their actions and words that are inappropriate, depending on the standards and beliefs of the parent and teacher. No matter what age, children require a routine, reassurance, sense of safety which includes daily routines, rituals and boundaries. Some of the techniques used to make a teenager feel empowered include: 1. Routines – Teenagers feel secure when they know what is to happen. They have the opportunity to look forward

to something. When the routines are made fun such as candles at dinner, aromatherapy for sleep, time for them, time with the family, the teenagers commence to goal set in their mind. Although they may express that they are bored and don’t want routine, this action brings safety to their mind. 2. Boundaries – Healthy boundaries are not only necessary but give the teenagers a sense of safety. They know their limits and where they can be accepted and loved. Yes some teenagers will want to rebel and break the boundaries, and certainly will try. However this is part of the psychological process of growing up. The ages of 1421 are about being social and usually teenagers’ social skills are poor trying all the behaviours that are not acceptable. Subconsciously they know that having the boundaries is something to fall back on. It is also part of the integration process teenagers learn when they are maturing and learning so that the children understand what is acceptable as an adult and what is not. These

boundaries are not limiting for a child but guide them to what appears safe to them, others and the environment. The key here is for the parents and teachers to stick to the boundaries no matter what. 3. Deep Breathing – The simple technique of taking a deep breath makes huge changes to the outcomes on all levels of life and health, for not only the teenager but also the parents. When we take a deep breath it allows us to ponder for a moment and see the situation with discernment. When a teenager feels anxiety, fear or any other negative emotion, deep breathing alters the perception as more oxygen circulates around the body, changing the perspective and chemical outcomes in the body. On a metaphysical level, the lungs are concerned with how we react to situations and energy distribution. When taking a deep breath, we alter the energy from FEAR to LOVE and react positively. There is a secret power to deep breathing that works on a quantum physics level. If the teenager is upset,

Millennium Children moody, or won’t listen to you, it is important that the parent/teacher takes three deep breaths. The laws of nature kick in and the teenager will come in to alignment with the other person and breathe with them. This is called health harmonics and can be witnessed when mothers calm their young babies. The babies fall in to sync with the mother. The same happens with teenagers. The key to working with teenagers is to remember they need your guidance, support and understanding. When in doubt remember what it was like to be a teenager. Their mind, body and spirit are transforming rapidly. Nurture them as you would a young child as deep down we are all still young children. Self Esteem

aving a high belief in yourself is extremely powerful but most of us wander the planet repeating the negative stories in our head that we were told about ourselves, especially in childhood, or that we created with our own thoughts. Continuing these negative thought patterns helps us believe that we are not important, useful or amazing. It is easy to create a self belief that it is not OK to ask for what you want or to believe that a positive comment we receive is genuine. As a child how many times were we told “No!” when we asked for something. It was not our parents’ intention to make us feel unimportant it just inadvertently happened. Everyone needs to receive positive comments to live and grow. If we feel like no one has anything nice to say to us then many of us will give up and revert to negative behaviour to get the attention that all of us need. Many people discount a positive comment either by ignoring them or

watering them down. For example: “I think you’re great.” “Oh, you should see me on off days.” But being able to discount or reject comments is sometimes useful. For example: “You’re pretty useless, aren’t you?” “No I’m not.” If people live in an environment where they do not receive positive comments or most of the comments are negative, and when a person chooses to believe them, then they will build low self-esteem and dislike themselves. If people receive and accept enough positive comments, give themselves positive comments, and are very selective about which negative comments they will accept and which they will reject then they will build high self-esteem and they will like themselves. If you would like to help your children, partner or anyone in your life feel important then just think of something positive to say. Be genuine

as saying something that is not true is obvious to the receiver. If you don’t mean it – don’t say it. This is also being accountable to yourself. If you focus on the negative behaviour then from their perspective they have your attention and may feel a level of success. They have learned that bad behaviour or that particular behaviour gets them attention, be it negative or positive. Focus on even the slightest good behaviour and make a comment that reinforces the positive behaviour. Look for the positive behaviour and really be happy to comment on it. - It is OK to give others positive compliments - It is OK to give ourselves positive compliments - It is OK to accept positive compliments - It is OK to reject negative comments - It is OK to ask for positive comments ROSIE BARKER is a clairvoyant medium and counsellor practising at Wellsure in Caloundra.

Best Start in Life

Helping Children Reach Their Full Potential We all want the best for our children, and this includes helping them to develop and grow both physically and mentally. With 1 in 16 school-aged children now being diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and 1 in 91 being diagnosed with autism, we must begin asking “Is there something more that we can do?” Even without a diagnosis, many children struggle with various aspects of cognitive function and learning, including memory, judgement, problem solving, and language development. Poor learning or behaviour needn’t be an inevitable part of life. Keeping Your Kids Focused and Alert A child’s education forms the foundation from which they learn about the world around them and develop social and behavioural skills. A poor start in life can have lifelong effects on learning and social development. For some kids, getting the brain to quieten down and switch off from distractions can be a huge challenge, both in the classroom and at home. This can contribute to poor concentration,

decreased focus, and learning difficulties. The good news is that there are certain nutrients and herbs that work together to improve concentration and cognitive function, reduce background ‘noise’ or distractions and stop our children from being left behind at school. Good Fats for a Great Brain Unfortunately, many children are not eating enough oily fish such as salmon, tuna, and sardines, and are deficient in these healthy fats which are crucial for brain development. Deficiencies in EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid), the active components in fish oil, have been associated with behavioural symptoms in children. DHA in particular comes under the spotlight, as higher doses of DHA have been found to significantly improve attention and cognition in children. Supplementing with highly purified and concentrated fish oils containing therapeutic levels of EPA and DHA is therefore vital to support the developing brain. Nourish Those Nerves Along with essential lipids and herbs, a number of nutrients are also valuable in supporting cognitive function

in children. Iodine and Vitamin D are essential nutrients for healthy brain development and function. Healthy brain and nerve signalling is also supported with nutrients such as activated vitamin B6, zinc and magnesium. The best way to ensure your children are getting the nutrients they need is to provide fresh, healthy food including fruit and vegetables, and quality protein at every meal. Healthy kids also need plenty of play, physical activity, and adequate rest and sleep. Watch Your Child Thrive Impaired cognitive function and behavioural development can greatly interfere with a child’s ability to learn about the world around them and function fully. As an integrative doctor who understands the importance of food as medicine, I provide detailed assessments and dietary advice to assist if your child struggles with concentration and lacks the focus required for optimal learning, or exhibits signs of hyperactivity and other behavioural issues.

Families, Addiction WORDS JOST SAUER

regularly treat teenage ‘addicts’ whose parents want me to get them ‘back to normal’. We are not here to be ‘normal’ though, and I believe these young users sense this. They say they don’t want to be like their parents, what they mean is they don’t want to be stressed, irritable, time-poor and living to work. They want some magic and mystery in life and drugs seem like the only way to get this. The media regularly blame the breakdown of the family unit for the drug epidemic. But instead of trying to go back to the past we have an opportunity to take up a new cosmically holistic lifestyle that delivers something more than normal and changes family relationships. So I always suggest to the parents that if they want their kids to change, one of the most powerful things they can do is start changing themselves. Andrew, a past client of mine discovered the positive impact this has on the whole family. He was manager of a successful multi-million dollar business, and had the big house, the big Mercedes and so on. But he used drugs

and the holistic solution

and alcohol to handle the stress which eroded his health. He took a few years off to rebuild and spend time with his young family. But without direction he ended up fully immersed in addiction and his family life fell apart. He took more drugs to cope, but this accelerated the destruction and he soon started thinking about ending it all. I knew immediately that drugs weren’t his problem (they’re never anybody’s problem), not knowing how to live was the problem. I introduced him to ‘chi’, treated him with acupuncture, showed him exercises, changed his diet and got his lifestyle cosmically aligned. Within weeks everything changed. He lost all interest in drugs. His life is now grounded, he knows who he is and rarely feels the frustration, anger and disappointment of the old days. He regained strength and energy, is playing sports again (which he thought he’d never do), with the stamina to outrun his kids. The home atmosphere improved, the tension disappeared, his son’s eczema symptoms

went and his children started taking an interest in health and feeling good. Andrew’s relationship with his wife and family has never been better. Sharing the chi-cycle system for a happy, healthy family life inspires him, and Andrew is now managing the Urban Drug Rehab I founded. Andrew’s case might be extreme but drug use just accelerates what most people are heading to (much more slowly) through unaligned chi-depleting lifestyles. These create emotional reactivity and tension and have a detrimental effect on family relationships. It doesn’t make kids do drugs, but putting some magic and mystery back into your life, finding your ‘cosmic self’ and your destiny will inspire your kids and show them another way of feeling extraordinary. Instead of trying to get them back to normal, try to make yourself a little less so. Then no one will need drugs.

Leading the way

WORDS SORAYA SARASWATI, Soul Purpose Mastery – Living Love

ur youth are calling out and demanding a new world order. Made wiser by the lessons and learning of their parents, many young people are now claiming their right to the power of speech. There is a powerful transition occurring with humankind… a purging and cleansing of the blood born from those who have suffered at the hands of the darker side of humankind. The world powers have been corrupt and now they are crumbling. For this to happen our economy will go through a crisis and the spirit of many of our young, unsatisfied with the wrongs of society, are either standing up bravely to make a difference or falling into victimhood and looking for escape through drugs. Transparency and Truth are being demanded by the masses, there will be many endings to the micro-worlds we may have been involved in along life’s road. Let us ask ourselves: Can we die to that which no longer serves love and acknowledge our inner beauty and

ability to rise again, to spread wings of truth born in the moments of deep understanding? I trust our youth to be the ones who lead us in this very important march to freedom. Freedom from those placed on pedestals of grandeur made larger by greed and lust for power and money. This corruption has been supported by the laziness of the masses who have been all too ready to hand over the reins. Let us pull our heads out of the sand now and step back to allow our youth the voice that will restore compassion and humanity to all. As conscious elders of a changing society the wisdom we have gained along the way can support our energetic and willing youth to lead this transition toward change. The focus is often on the anger and frustration of our youth. Sadly mental health issues and drug and alcohol abuse are a major problem for our society. However there is another group of young people not given enough credit for the bravery and courage they show in standing up

to be counted. These more conscious young people have the energy and passion to shine light into the cracks of our society previously plugged up with bureaucracy in an attempt to avoid change. Old institutions will crumble and our youth will develop a new way forward supported by those of us wise enough to trust in and become a part of this transformation.

hen our children hit a certain age, it’s a trigger. Yep, that’s why it’s sometimes tricky to navigate parenting. We find that whatever the age of the child or teenager, we’ve always got some healing, learning and growing to do. When we are in reaction, we can find our way back to empowerment as parents and caregivers of children and adolescents. We need to first acknowledge our own limitations. If we are reacting, we are challenged. If we feel that we are not in control, it is a symptom of an underlying fear that has been displaced. It may be that we struggled at that age, experienced a trauma or were abused. When we are in an unconscious reactive state, it is easy to project our anger and frustration onto children. Remember we are up to four times bigger than them and when we are angry, we may appear like a scary monster! Some parents even take an extra step forward with their anger

and physically hit children. Imagine a huge scary monster hitting you! This only creates more fear and wounding for our children to pass on to further generations. In order for us to nurture evolved and enlightened children, we need to allow ourselves the humility and grace of our own journey. We need to be able to admit our own imperfections, own our reactions and change our behaviour. Our children are gifts because they give us an opportunity to realise what is unhealed and in need of returning to wholeness. As we evolve, so do our children. When we are triggered, we can take a step back and reflect on our own childhood. Asking the question “What was needed at that age that I never felt I received?” can be helpful to encourage insight. It may be that you needed to play more and were given too much responsibility. As a bi-product, you may feel challenged when playing with your children or allowing them to play. However, play has been shown to

teach children more than intellectualised learning. As you learn to play with your child, you become a great teacher. We often overcompensate for the things that we didn’t receive too. Another example could be that we felt unsafe as a child. We may have not been able to protect ourselves and felt unprotected by our parents. So we may go to the other extreme and be overprotective. Unfortunately, 180 degrees from ‘wrong’ is still ‘wrong’ and our children learn to live in fear. The key is and always will be balance. The key to achieving balance is healing and moderating our own behaviour. We can put loving strategies into action for ourselves to feel safer, play more and address our own unique needs. When we do so, the flow on effect for our children and teenagers is indescribable and magical. “Let it begin with me” is a wonderful saying that brings enlightenment and encourages the Everyday Lightworker in all of us.

Trusting your

Parenting Instincts

arenting can be hard! In fact it is one of the most difficult jobs you could have and today’s parents are facing more challenges than ever before. Food is injected and sprayed, water is laden with chemicals; social interaction has been reduced to staring at a screen. These are only but a few modern day stressors that are leading our particularly vulnerable children down a slippery slope to a life of disease. However, there are many tools and skills you can learn to make life easier. All stressors will fall within three categories: Trauma (physical), Stress (mental) and Toxins (chemical). The more we are subjected to any one or combinations of these stressors the further “out of balance” we will be and the further away from optimum health we become. By understanding and reducing these stressors, as parents we can potentially help our child avoid illness, alleviate symptoms and encourage optimal body function and brain development. How do we know if we, or our kids

are “out of balance?” Be observant, trust your gut instinct if you think that something “just isn’t right” you’re probably right! All kids are unique and therefore what is normal for one may not be for another. Watch your baby, are they acting and engaging in an age appropriate manner? Do they stare at you contently or do they avoid eye contact? Are they meeting their developmental milestones? Signs of older children and teenagers being out of balance may include: •A ggressive, angry or defiant behaviour • Mood swings or consistently low mood, or lack of drive • Persistent minor illnesses, recurring colds, runny noses, sore throats and allergies • Decreased ability to concentrate • Hyperactivity • Difficulty sleeping or constant fatigue even upon waking, or general sluggishness • Skin conditions – eczema, discoloration, pale skin • Digestive worries – constipation, bed wetting, or bloated tummies These symptoms are messages from

the body that something is not right. If any of these sound familiar engage with your child whether they are babies, toddlers, or adolescents. Ask the right questions and listen to the response. Your time, attention and energy are the greatest gift you can give. Educate your children about their bodies. Kids are naturally inquisitive and generally more interested in how their body works than we give them credit for. Their bodies are incredibly intelligent machines designed to heal and capable of fighting off illness. It might be as simple as getting more sleep, breathing more fresh air, eating a more nutrient dense natural diet or having their nervous system checked (by a chiropractor). Parenting by definition is the rearing of a child or children, especially the care, love, and guidance given by a parent. There is no right or wrong way to do it but it helps to allow them to grow and develop into the greatest expressions of themselves as possible.

Children have their own inner guidance system… Actually we all do! They can work it out and are capable! Reminding children this in times of trouble or uncertainty builds inner confidence to make choices and become accountable! If your child is having issues with friends, school

or whatever, rather than jumping in with ideas and solutions, ask them to tune into their own inner guidance and share with you what it says. Teach them from a young age that they have the answers inside them. Share with him or her that everyone does. If your child answers they don’t know, let them not know in that moment. Say something like, “You do know, trust yourself and let me know when you do. I believe in you.” Then stop worrying about it and follow through with believing in them. Remind yourself (over and over again if you have to) that they have their own inner guidance system and that the universe has their back. When they answer you whether it is straight away or after a while, acknowledge and affirm them with something like, “Well done in finding that answer or solution. Tell me more.” Recognise they have their own journey to experience… Their journey is their journey and all experiences that find them, good and bad are perfect and in line with their growth and precisely what they need. Let them make mistakes and grow from them. Remind them it is okay to make mistakes and that they are responsible for their lives and choices. It is okay to wear the wrong shoes or uniform to school,

If being uncomfortable was something they have to experience then going hungry all day is also quite harmless. or forget their lunch, or miss a due date on an assignment. Let them own their mistakes and make them accountable to own it. They will go through some humiliation from time to time however, if you stop yourself from stepping in they will also grow and learn from it. For example: if humiliation was something they needed to learn about and experience, wearing the wrong shoes for a day at school is an easy way to learn it. If being uncomfortable was something they have to experience then going hungry all day is also quite harmless. All experiences for us all are necessary for growth and the less resistance we have to them, the easier the journey. Teach them to follow and make choices that excite their hearts… This is one of the easiest tools I share in Body Consciousness… “Follow what excites your heart!” If they want to do soccer, dancing, swimming, play an instrument – before they commit, ask them if it excites their heart!

Every time each and every one of us tunes in to what excites our hearts, something magical happens. Our inner guidance system connects us to the universe and synchronicity and flow begins to appear. It feels light and easy! If they are deliberating with a decision on what assignment to do, what sport to play, what friend to hang out with, what to put up on social media try saying this to them, “Which one excites your heart the most?” When they answer, reply with something like, “Trust that, that is your own inner guidance talking to you.” Then whatever experience finds them will be perfect for their growth. AND over time you are teaching them a very valuable tool! Having teenagers myself now and facing all the social media issues, alcohol and drug issues and peer influences, I have found the above very helpful. We are living in an age of potential and so are our children. Inside every child is the ability to create a journey on earth full of love and excitement. Inside every child is the ability to move through challenges and grow from them. Believe in our children and believe that we all have an innate inner guidance system that links us to our hearts and opens up our wisdom.

Blended Families Loving

WORDS KEAN BUCKLEY, Relationship and Retreat Specialist

he best example of relationship I know is my wife, Kathleen. Wise, gentle, patient (ask my friends!) and fair, she is an influential partner and respected parent. Many people say they feel the love between us, and within our home. Kathleen makes me look good, (I’m a counsellor) and helps me to be the best dad by being more consistent in love having made this her discipline. Kath is willing to do whatever it takes to ensure all members of the family are respected equally. Many times she has ensured I didn’t pass on ‘my experience’ with the force of righteous conviction it came with. My strength was the willingness to give my family a better me! It wasn’t always easy. In the first eighteen months it was as bad between us as I could have wished. I often felt like leaving. Our arguments were fierce when two different parenting styles came together, in a blended family of two 6-year-olds, one 8 and one to seal the deal! Today, I would bet on me being with Kath at the end. We become happier and grow closer regularly. So how do we do it, whilst running two businesses and bringing up four children that all get along with each other? The key was taught to me by Falu Eyre – C.R.I. Commitment – think about how many families are broken due to the lack of it? Many experience a number of break-ups which may affect self-confidence more than we know.

Talking to your children about

was 14 years old when I found myself in a huge school hall, watching a sex education film. I was sitting in profound and stunned silence when I realised that ‘that’ went into ‘that’ and by the way, how was that physically possible? I shuddered with fear and responsibility that I would have to ‘do’ this one day. There was nothing spoken about pleasure, about love, about how magical our bodies actually are, about the profound mystery of creation and birth, or simply the potential for elevation and expression of love through our bodies. Empower your child A dear friend shared how when her daughter was five she asked how babies were made. She answered in a very beautiful, honest yet story-like fashion illustrating the magical mystery of our bodies. “I remember on the day I told her this, it was an incredibly bonding moment for us. She was looking up at me with awe. She was totally connected

to me with this authentic appreciation for being allowed to share in this extraordinary mystery…” Children want to know. And it is necessary for them to know so that they receive accurate information they can trust and learn and appreciate that their bodies are special. The sex talk can be an ongoing dialogue throughout the child’s life, helping them make sense of their bodies and feelings. The more comfortable you are as an adult, willing to challenge your own fears of sex, the more empowered your child will be. It’s good to not shame your child for what he or she says or does. A new and scary reality in 2014 that wasn’t around in its proportions when I grew up, is the influence of media, with children as young as eight watching porn on their phones. Which makes it even more important that parents guide their children from an early age. When talking to your kids about sex, there are three things you need to

consider – teaching about biological function, teaching about pleasure, and teaching about protection, in age appropriate ways. A child needs all three to be able to differentiate and develop their own confidence and discernment as they grow. If you taught them only about function, they could end up feeling confused and unsafe like I did. If you taught them only about the pleasure, they may end up in unsafe situations. If you just taught them about protection, it might block them from the natural expression and joy that is available to them in safe and appropriate spaces. Every child and parent’s circumstance is different, and it changes over time as they age, but the important thing is be open and natural, and honest in a way that is appropriate to your child and your family circumstances.

This circumstance leads to a variety of physical and psychological ailments and illnesses. Atlasprofilax is a neuromuscular technique that liberates the Atlas with only one application accurately, safely and permanently. This powerful relocation immediately activates a self-healing and harmonising process. It is holistic in nature, promoting wellness and rejuvenation on all levels, mind, body and spirit. This method is nonmedical, non-chiropratic.

One Treatment Can Be Life Changing The Atlas supports your head and governs structural alignment. A misaligned Atlas causes restriction of the brain stem, spinal cord, cranial nerves and arteries. This limits our potential for wellbeing and creates tension, restricting the free flow of energy. When the Atlas is installed correctly, the body begins an unwinding process, releasing holding patterns and enabling the body to heal and regenerate.

between mother and daughter

to listen to the wisdom within them. While the masculine within us all leads to strengthening rational intelligence, feminine emotional wisdom has been illegitimated and lost. This creates a huge divide within us and between ourselves and our daughters. The key characteristics of connecting with our emotional selves in a healthy way is to practise feeling into the emotions held in our bodies, being present with them, identifying them and acknowledging them. Our emotions need to be validated, otherwise they intensify and become overwhelming. The message within the emotion may be about a current situation or a past wound, however learning to accurately listen to these messages helps us to heal and make positive choices in our lives. Only through self-awareness of our emotional wisdom, can we make

he connection with our daughters is incredibly valuable. Yet we often do not realise the full effects of generational family patterns and society’s conditioning on them until they are teenagers. Then, when they are at their most vulnerable, the effects emerge. Perhaps one of the most prominent areas that this manifests is in the realm of emotion. How can we teach our daughters to value themselves through listening to their emotional wisdom if we do not know how to do it ourselves? As women, we are often given the message that there is something wrong with our emotions. This message may come from society, our partners our friends or our families. However, the result is that we try to block or suppress our emotions, which only distorts them and blocks our innate ability

choices based on our inner truth. This is not an emotional reaction, which is an unconscious reaction made out of emotional intensity. Rather, it is about learning how to respond to the world based on our emotional wisdom. This is the cornerstone of being a woman and is what we need to teach our daughters for them to know how to make their own choices that honour themselves. When we heal ourselves as women and re-discover a healthy relationship with our emotions, then we are in a space to model this to our daughters. However, it is imperative that we heal first. Learning to navigate and surf our emotion is a priceless skill that we can pass on to future generations, as well as to carve out inner peace and build confidence within ourselves. A Different Take on

hat if behaviour is a form of communication? If that’s true, then what are children saying when they “act out,” or act “naughty,” or cry a lot, or throw tantrums, or …? As a child and family and play therapist, many children are referred to see me because their parents, teachers or pediatricians are concerned about the child’s behaviours at home, at school or out in the community. Rather than looking to correct the behaviours, I’m much more interested in what’s creating them… what the children don’t have the words to say verbally. It has been my experience that people do the best they can with the information and tools and resources they have available to them. Given all of that, some of the first questions I ask myself when I hear about a child acting out are: “What is this? What is he telling us? What’s going on with her? ”

A mum brought her five-year-old son to see me. He had been getting into trouble at school and was difficult at home. He was argumentative, oppositional, rude and aggressive at times. They sat on the sofa, and, he couldn’t keep his hands away from her. He was invading her space and she was clearly irritated. He kept on trying to sit in her lap and she was at the end of her rope, pushing him off so that he could sit next to her. As she described his behaviours, he continued to poke her and squirm and wiggle and giggle. After several minutes, I asked him about what she said and he shrugged his little shoulders. Then, I asked him: “What do you know about your Mum?” He sat bolt upright and appeared to stop breathing. His eyes locked into mine, and, he said: “Mikey (her boyfriend at the time) is going to move in with us, and, then he’s going to

leave and Mummy’s going to cry.” She burst into tears. A week later she called to tell me that since the session, his “naughty” behaviours had all but disappeared, and, that she had broken up with her boyfriend! Tool: Ask a question! The next time your child acts out, ask yourself: What is this? What can I do with it? The next time your child gets into trouble at school, rather than try to figure it out and come up with an answer for him, ask him: What is that? What do you know about your teacher? What do you know about those kids? … and, what else do you know? And, what else? … Keep your opinions to yourself and just listen! You might be amazed at what they actually do know!

Power of Sunshine

unshine Coast charity ‘Sunshine Butterflies’ is spreading sunshine to many families throughout the Coast and beyond who are living with disability and founder Leanne Walsh knows first hand how disability affects families. In 1995 Leanne gave birth to her son Curtis who entered the world 13 weeks premature leaving him on oxygen for the next 12 months and later diagnosed with cerebral palsy and epilepsy. Leanne’s dream of having a healthy baby was unexpectedly changed forever when she woke early one Sunday morning experiencing signs of early labour. “My world was turned upside down and my vision of a perfect life turned a different direction to what I imagined and dreamed it to be,” she says. Years later Leanne created Sunshine Butterflies to assist other families who walk a similar journey and to empower families and provide the support people need to achieve a happy and fulfilled life. Sunshine Butterflies is a registered charity and not for profit organisation to support and improve the lives of young

people with disabilities and provide families with support information and individual assistance. Their 10 key program and service areas include: • Family Care Program • Swim and Recreation Clubs • Siblings Social Club • Puppet Disability Education and Awareness Program • Support Groups • Respite • Early Intervention Aqua Therapy Program – Baby Bridges • Personal Fundraising Initiatives for Families • Post School Day Activity Programs (art, music and woodwork) • Business Services – All ability First Aid Training and Sunshine Butterflies Cleaning However it’s their holistic approach to support which sets them apart from other organisations and service providers. Leanne says not receiving government funding has actually been a blessing in disguise as it means they have to be creative in the way they fund services and it gives them an open

licence to offer flexible solutions to assist families. “Our families who come into our life thank us for giving them hope as more often than not families living with disability do not cope well, and can view their life as lonely and challenging.” Sunshine Butterflies opens a whole world of possibilities for families by building confidence within the family unit. Each family will experience different challenges which change as their child progresses through life, but once they know there is help out there, they suddenly no longer feel alone. Sunshine Butterflies’ “can do” approach is lead by Leanne and a small passionate team whose uniqueness to understand and support the caring role of families living with disabilities has earned them many awards. They support over 250 families and many are joining from all over Australia to access their online personal fundraising initiative which allows families to raise funds to support their child’s needs, by using the security of a registered charity.

Parenting from a

Different Perspective!

s a “solo” parent of four children ranging in ages 9 to 15 I had spent many hours agonising over what a “good” if not “great” parent should be and do. When I found Access Consciousness this all began to change and now my household is far more enjoyable than I ever imagined it could be! My parenting style comes from a place of empowering and giving them tools they can use throughout their whole lives, with Access and my own knowing I have found this possible! My toolbox includes: asking questions, choice, awareness, information and running “Bars”. These tools work together perfectly and create more ease within the family. Teaching children to ask questions allows them to have a far greater

scope of the world around them, questions empower and answers can disempower. What we are looking for is their awareness/knowing that a question brings up which is not the same as an answer. Showing my children that they have choice and that they create their lives and I the parent, are not the whole source of their lives, has changed the dynamics of my family. Awareness is one of the greatest tools we have; everything leads back to our awareness. Children are so aware and one of the tools I use with my kids daily is “Who does that belong to?” for any thoughts, feelings and emotions that may be ‘sticking’ them. Information is, in my point of view, vital! I tell, teach and show my children as much as possible, if they ask a question I answer truthfully, they

are already aware of the energy if the words match, they get a sense of peace, if it doesn’t it’s like they are being lied to which can create them acting out. Bars is a dynamic hands-on process that helps children with anything from behaviour issues, stress, sleep difficulties, ADD, ADHD, autism, school work, the list goes on. I believe if we could get kids running Bars at schools, bullying would be a thing of the past!! When showing our children a different possibility it expands what is truly possible for them in ways far greater than what any of us could imagine. As a parent be kind to yourself, don’t judge your every choice, there is no right or wrong way to bring up children, love them and show them it’s more than okay to be who they truly Be!

The Cross of Changes WORDS RICHARD GILES, Astrologer and Feng Shui Practitioner

here are times in astrological forecasting that astrologers get either very excited or cautious about coming large scale transits. This month of April is one of those occasions. This year a Grand Cross is forming on and off in the Cardinal signs that is having large scale impacts on the world of politics, finances and social-cultural events (Cardinal signs are Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn). Over the last few years two of the outer planets are describing squares to one another that’s grinding away at our stable institutions and shifting everything we’ve taken for granted. It’s the Uranus-Pluto square that’s been operating since 2012. Uranus and Pluto are two of the strongest of our outer planets and play a major part in establishing the impact of new trends downloaded into our world collective and doing so, they cause massive alterations in our social and political fabric. This year is the fifth in a series of squares to one another (lasting through until 2015) and the squares

are aiding the shift to a more sensible economic and political world system and also bringing with them a gradual collapse (sometimes faster) of all the systems to which we have become accustomed. Expect governments to try out rigid controls as well. Along with change goes breakthroughs and Uranus-Pluto are always associated with scientific, technological and medical shifts. What is a Grand Cross? It is composed of four square aspects and contains friction, strain and pressure. The dynamic convergence of these forces can also supply the fuel for people and nations to become completely positively purposeful. The Cross consists of the planets Uranus in Aries, Jupiter in Cancer, Mars in Libra and Pluto in Capricorn. They will form the strongest aspect on 23rd/ 24th April and this cross will be also activated by the Moon on 21st and again on 27th April. What is activation? It’s when a faster moving body like the moon comes into the Cross it will trigger the pressures finding weak points

and thus the energy goes up several notches. This April week is likely to be the scene of (or the seed of) dramatic shifts around the world and in your country, state or home. The planets involved are – Mars (defence, anger, desire), Jupiter (beliefs, religion, expansion), Uranus (rebellion, fast change, freedom), Pluto (reformation, power, fear). This all happens most strongly at 13/14 degrees of the Cardinal signs. If you have planets in these positions – in mid Aries, Libra, Cancer and Capricorn you can expect the Grand Cross to activate your life as well. It depends on what planets or angles are there. We get a picture of the clash between old and new – systems breaking down, established structures changing, revolutionary ideas, changes in family patterns, teenagers (who are effected by Uranus) striking out on their own, changes in the old ways of doing things, facing enforced change, and facing our fears. email:

Chakradance:Rhythm for your Soul NATALIE SOUTHGATE

ith 30 accredited facilitators in Australia, and another 60 in 17 other countries around the world, Chakradance is currently the world’s fastest-growing healing dance practice. Its founder, Sydney-born Natalie Southgate, first created Chakradance in 1998 when living in London. Now based on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, Natalie explains its origins, how it works, and why it’s good for your soul… “In my twenties and thirties, I had explored many ‘new age’ practices dedicated to healing, consciousnessraising, working with energy and light. Along the way, I often experienced realities that seemed to be almost of ‘another world’. My struggle, in hindsight, was in connecting this ‘other world’ with my normal everyday self. I felt drawn to find a way to embody some of these remarkable experiences. In doing so, I was strongly guided to work with the chakra system as the most helpful ‘map’. We all have seven major chakras, each acting as an energetic gateway allowing universal

energy to flow in and out of our systems. Each chakra corresponds with particular organs and reflects different aspects of consciousness on emotional, psychological and spiritual levels. Each chakra has its own vibrational frequency, as well as related elements, crystals, archetypes, animals, planets etc. And these can all be used as pathways into the chakras enabling us to connect more deeply with the energies existing within each one. What was missing, for me, was a way of working with the chakras to experience them fully, as a complete system of embodied consciousness, not merely as an intriguing ‘mental map’. And then, one magical evening, dancing in the dark in my living room in London, I noticed that certain dancetracks had a powerful resonance with a particular chakra. This was the birth of Chakradance, a healing dance practice that uses specific chakra-resonant music and spontaneous dance to activate and balance the chakras. It took another ten years of experimentation and development, running classes in London and Sydney, before I felt ready

to share it more broadly with the world by training others in how to facilitate it. Dancing the seven chakras is like dancing into seven different worlds, each with its own lessons, meanings and stories. There is no right or wrong way to Chakradance. It’s a journey of self-discovery. Each chakra is explored through specific music, guided imagery and your own free, improvised dance, done with your eyes softly closed. This begins to activate inner experiences. It’s almost like entering into a waking dream. You will often see images in your mind’s eye while you are dancing, experience emotions and physical sensations, and gain insights. Classes, typically comprising a dozen or so participants, are held in candle lit spaces. Although music and dance form the primary focus, sessions also include mandala art-making and short meditations. Chakradance aims to awaken the body, open the mind, and call out to the soul.

Love Healing? Love Dance? Then you’ll love Chakradance® It’s the world’s fastest-growing healing dance practice. And you could be the first accredited Chakradance facilitator in your area! The first stage (so you can see if it feels right for you) of our Facilitator Training programme takes just two weeks, costs just $150, and is done at home, using workbooks and music files that we supply, together with email or telephone support as you prefer. Evolving patterns of Movement WORDS GAYLYN AITKEN

e all have patterns of movement developed from the constant use of a particular way of how we hold ourselves during movement. When movement becomes limited from deep seated emotional tension – this can include belief systems of what is the right way and the wrong way or a persistent fear response, which changes the structural support of our body (read we eventually end up with all sorts of body discomfort and pain. Changing unsustainable movement patterns is the long term solution to enjoying effortless full range of motion. Sounds simple and it is, but it takes a persistent shift in awareness from the external to the internal to change and sustain new patterns.

The Kahuna would say ‘your business is your body, your job is to take inventory of yourself – constantly’. If your pattern is to ignore the biological needs of your body to rest, recuperate and nourish, you’re going to initially find it difficult to sustain a consistent internal awareness of how your body is feeling, but don’t give up, there are steps you can take to get you started. Firstly, you have to really desire change and be aware what patterns need changing. Also, be very clear

Reality is the constant use of illusion. – Kahu Abraham Kawai’i.

about why you want to change; it needs to be for you. Be wholehearted; involve your entire being in your project. If you’re not fully present you’ll drop yourself and drift back into old unsustainable patterns (a pattern in itself). Regularly place yourself in a neutral position. Constructive Rest Position developed by Mabel Todd is my chosen method of neutral posture to ‘rest deeply and let that which needs to, unfold and become’. It’s in the stillness and silence of just being, we become aware of our internal movement and it’s from here we can begin to change and refine old, unsustainable patterns of movement. For more instruction, go to Kahuna Mist Facebook page and check out our video.

Reacting versus Responding,

that is the question

ome thoughts from the front line… As a Clinical Psychologist, sometimes I expect my parenting experiences to ‘roll’ in a certain way. How life has other plans! I just want to share with you how my afternoon unfolded recently. I share in the hope that this will be of comfort to any of the would-be super-mums out there struggling with their own expectations of themselves and their children: 3pm – pick the girls up from school with expectation of a good afternoon ahead. 3.10pm – questioning anticipation when youngest daughter announces “I’m not going to swimming, I’m too tired for swimming. I’m never swimming again!” This is followed by foot stamping, scowling and yelling. 3.15pm – afternoon continues in southward direction when oldest daughter mentions she’s “probably had the worst day at school. Ever.” 3.20pm – I ask the girls to change

into their swimmers for a class that starts in 10 minutes. After asking probably six times I can feel my anger starting to reach a slow boil. 3.25pm – two girls wrestling in the back of the car but not in swimmers and not even close to being so. My mood has escalated into the black zone and I can’t even imagine a time when I’ll smile or laugh again. How does the story end? Well, we made it to swimming (just) but there was some collateral damage. This is not an uncommon scenario for many of us, and sometimes the most straightforward of days can seem like ten rounds in the boxing ring. Often in stressful situations I become immersed in thoughts like “Why is this happening to me?” or “I’m a bad parent” or “My children are the worst behaved children in the entire Sunshine Coast”. These types of thoughts often lead to feelings of anger and hopelessness, and then result in

us reacting in situations rather than responding. The difference between reacting versus responding is an important one for me. Reacting is off the cuff and unconsidered. Responding is thought through and measured. Some of the things I find help me respond rather than react are: • Slow things down. When I can remember not to rush my kids or myself when things are becoming stressful it really helps. • To do this I try to take 3-6 deep breaths. As hard as it can be, walk away for a moment, I find that when I do this I have more time to become aware of my thoughts and feelings and to stay that little bit more flexible. • Don’t be too hard on yourself, we all struggle with parenting at times, it can be a really tough job. Mindfulness Mistake

any long-time meditators have watched the rise in popularity of meditation and mindfulness with great interest. For decades the research into meditation’s benefits have been well documented but it’s the studies into such things as better performance and a rise in productivity that have attracted the business sector’s attention. In-house meditation and mindfulness courses are being integrated into many corporations these days. Buddhist psychotherapist Renate Ogilvie has taught at Buddhist centres around the world for over twenty years. She combines modern approaches to psychotherapy with Buddhist philosophy. I spoke with her recently and asked for her thoughts on the rising popularity of using mindfulness techniques in the work place. She told me it’s all about intention. When people turn to meditation because they perceive it as being useful for business and for themselves, that will it equip them better for their competitive

lifestyles, Renate says they are making a mistake. “Meditation and mindfulness are not here to make us better in the rat race,” she told me. “Of course it focuses the mind, makes us sharper and more aware but without context you can, for example, use mindfulness to be a totally excellent drug dealer.” She explained that mindfulness should not just be used for competition, for succeeding in the world, or as a narcissistic way of improving ourselves. Ultimately the aim of mindfulness is to make us masters of our own minds. Renate maintains that being master of our mind is a necessary step towards gaining enlightenment but not just for ourselves and our own gratification but for the sake of others. In doing so we become more effective in the way we help other people. This is the most important motivation. When we use techniques like mindfulness ultimately the impetus must be to benefit others. I’m not a Buddhist myself but I meditate as I have been taught. At

the end of each session I finish with Metta – loving kindness. May all beings share my merits. May all beings be happy. And perhaps this is the answer. In a recent Yale study, published in the journal Brain and Behaviour, the researchers evoked feelings of selfless love in meditators by having them repeat the phrase “may all beings be happy” while their brains were being scanned. The study found that the areas of the brain that become active when we think about ourselves were deactivated, especially in experienced meditators. Compassion. Loving kindness. A few moments of selfless love at the end of every meditation could be the antidote to becoming a totally excellent drug dealer. Cool Kidz!

with Amanda Rootsey

t turns out even the cool kids can wear ethical and sustainable fashion! This month I chatted with Tani Klein, the founder of Doodlebug to learn more about her inspiration for this innovative and eco-friendly children’s fashion label. Amanda: How did Doodlebug come about? Tani: I have always illustrated, painted and created in some way or another throughout my life. With a bit of spare time when we first moved here from NZ in 2009, a toddler in toe, and a baby on the way, I turned my hand to a series of black and white ‘doodles’ that I thought might look good on one of my daughter’s tops. Interest grew in my creations so I started selling them at local markets. Amanda: How did it become a thriving eco business? Tani: I had heard of bamboo fabric and to me it seemed like a complete miracle fabric. It seemed like a wild

dream to be able to manufacture a line of my own clothing ethically, sustainably and organically with this luxury buttery textile. So I dedicated myself to Professor Google. Months of my life were poured into learning everything I could about pattern making, design, children’s clothing, retail, manufacturing, importing, bamboo, marketing and just how to pull it all off. Never having taken a risk like this in my life before, it took a lot of support and urging from my husband to import 1.5 tonnes of bamboo fabric into Australia. I think I was a bit nuts, but turns out it was the best thing I have ever done! The rest, so they say, is history! Amanda: What sets it apart from other children’s labels? Tani: We like to think of ourselves as the Eco Friendly clothing for the cool kids! I believe it is every business owner’s responsibility to really think about the ways in which they are operating. To me it goes without saying that we should be using an organic fabric on our babies and it’s

only natural that we should be trading ethically and supporting communities in need. SPECIAL EVENT – GET INVOLVED April 24 is Fashion Revolution Day. On April 24 last year, 1133 people were killed when the Rana Plaza factory complex collapsed in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Many more were injured. Today, people are still suffering as a direct result of our fashion supply chain. To raise awareness about this, Fashion Revolution Day is asking one simple question – “Who Made Your Clothes?” To be a part of this moving global campaign, all you need to do is wear an item of clothing inside out, take a picture and share it with the hashtag #insideout. Clear and

Balance the Energy

at your place

oes the energy at home not feel right? Do you think you may have unwanted energies in your house? Have you ever walked into a place and felt like you wanted to leave right away? Perhaps you have your property on the market and it won’t sell? A clearing can help these issues and more. Clearings restore positive energy and bring a sense of renewed energy, peace and harmony. The change in energy can be felt immediately after a clearing. It’s common to like going to some people’s homes because of the positive energy or avoid going somewhere because of negative energy. We are naturally drawn to peaceful energy that calms us. I have cleared many houses, offices and buildings and the difference in energy from the time I walk in to the time I leave is truly amazing. In the case of a client who had a clearing after the

house had been on the market for close to a year, they were ecstatic when the house sold a few days after the clearing. The problem was not the property itself but the energy. Potential buyers loved the house but it never felt like home when they walked in. The clearing lifted the energy and gave the property a welcoming presence. A cleared home is a joy to live in. The workplace is another area where clearings can have a benefit. I have cleared offices after an employee or employees have resigned. Their negative energies still lingered in the office and the feedback after the clearing was that the staff were once again cheerful and felt great being at work. They tell me the workplace feels calm and peaceful and they love working there for the first time in so long. Sometimes I go to a property for the good old ghost busting or as we call it “crossing spirits over”. Some spirits

still think they haven’t passed away or they have unfinished business here and don’t want to “cross over”. They could either be very annoying to the existing residents or be peaceful but send an eerie feeling to them like someone is watching. Once the spirit moves on, the feeling of the place changes. Indications for a clearing include but are not limited to: • a feeling of negative energy or feeling uncomfortable in an area of your home or property • unexplained sounds, smells, movement of objects • people or animals sensing a presence • negative energy manifesting within a family or groups of people A clearing will help to bring in a loving space, lighten the surrounding environment and remove any heavy feeling around a property. Why Udo’s Choice? It is one of the most superior oil blends on the market, containing the ideal ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 essential fatty acids. • Eat plenty of phyto-oestrogen rich foods such as soya, linseeds, celery, parsley, beans, fennel and alfalfa, that help the body in times of hormonal change such as puberty. • Ensure that you are drinking an adequate amount of clean filtered water every day, and replace coffee and tea with herbal teas that help with detoxification. • Choose certified organic produce – as much as possible.

• Drink apple cider vinegar and eat probiotic rich foods to help improve your digestion and immune system. • STOP smoking; AVOID alcohol and caffeine; REDUCE your intake of processed foods and take-out foods with added chemicals and processed ingredients; AVOID refined table salt, sugar, saturated fats and fried foods; REDUCE your consumption of meat and dairy, or better still, AVOID completely; AVOID soft drinks, cordial, bottled juices and vitamin waters that are full of sugar and artificial additives. • Exercise regularly to help improve circulation but not alongside traffic (i.e. to help minimise inhalation of exhaust fumes). • Become aware of your ‘self-talk’. What if what you see as flaws are considered beautiful attributes by others? Please stop judging yourself. Take all that energy and focus on being kind to yourself instead.

Would You Teach a Fish to Climb a Tree?

A woman’s guide to navigating through emotional overwhelm By Vanessa Bushell

This book defines the next step in women’s selfempowerment… reconnecting with our emotional wisdom and truth. Through five women’s journeys and therapeutic reflections, important conditioned patterns are transformed. States of mind such as abandonment; people pleasing; generational grief; self-righteousness and shame are explored through their lived experiences. Each woman’s resolutions highlights the inner strength and resilience of facing our inner-demons and overcoming our past rather than suppressing, medicating or remaining lost in emotional overwhelm. If you ever wondered how to work through stubborn emotional patterns, then this book is for you.

What contribution can you be to your pet? WORDS VIV ADCOCK

he animal kingdom can show us much about oneness. Globally many more of us are actively seeking to create a life of harmony. When we commune with nature our being bathes in the tranquillity. The energy nourishes and re-awakens us to “be.” In this moment we receive everything exactly as it is, with no resistance and peace permeates into every one of our cells and beyond. So what separates us from this space of communion? Our noisy heads that rattle with incessant thoughts, judgements and internal conflict about what is good and bad, what is right and wrong, what we like and what we don’t… it goes on, feeding the addiction to polarity. In Oneness everything just is. If your pet is injured or diagnosed with a disease, what is your immediate reaction? We have come to love our pets so much that we develop a humanlike relationship with them and use our emotions to prove how much we care. We can unconsciously add energy to the situation by projecting our emotionally charged points of view into it.

Animals have no point of view (they don’t judge) about an injury or illness. They go about life as normal as is possible, but they do pick up on the energy their owners are being. So how can you be there for your pet (or anyone) in a way that assists the process? Start to become aware of what your point of view is, that is feeding the reaction i.e. “Oh you poor thing” – what energy does that carry and what would

projecting that point of view at your pet create? To develop your perception around how prevalent and powerful projections are, recall a time when you KNEW someone didn’t like you – was it uncomfortable and intense? Did you allow yourself to be affected by it or did you shrug it off? What if you consciously chose to see everything as an interesting point of view? If you can remind yourself that your pet’s injury or ailment is an interesting point of view, you will eliminate the emotional charge. This doesn’t mean you don’t care, it means that you care more because you are aware that adding your stuff to the situation creates more for you and the pet to deal with. The charge is neutralised, you can be present with the situation and allow it to be as it is. You can choose to be in harmony with any situation, which facilitates allowing everything to be exactly as it is.

Cancer Care Using Integrative Therapies WORDS DR ELAINE CEBULIAK

s a holistic practitioner it is my fortune to be presented with many chronic metabolic diseases. Although it may appear as “sudden”, cancer is one of these imbalances that strikes an individual after its own repairing immunological cells fail to notice, and seek out these aberrant reproducing anomalies. There are many causes underlying the progression of cancerous cells, from an immune dysfunction to an ageing phenomenon where the body becomes unable to reproduce healthy new cells and undergo a programmed cell death. Let’s face it, no matter how good we are as practitioners, we cannot offer immortality! What we can offer, as Veterinary Surgeons, is to make the patient as comfortable as possible, and we can even offer end of life relief when all else has failed. The definition of “all else”, however is not equivalent to all practitioners! Yes, when we have more tools in our toolbox we can offer more, even if it is palliative (not necessarily curative) modalities. Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, Naturopathic and Ayurvedic

Medicine observes the whole patient as being one of organ systems “talking” to each other via neuro-humoral (some call it spiritual or auric field) responses. When deficiencies or over-activity is observed, that particular organ system is worked upon to “balance it” using foods, herbs, and body work therapy, to invigorate that system, or to relieve and remove blockages so that the inner force (lymph, blood, vascular or muscle tension) can work more efficiently. This form of medicine focuses on building the body from a deficient state to a more vital force. This is somewhat different to Western Medicine, where the focus is on the ‘war with cancer’ or finding the cancer and cutting, burning or destroying that part of the body. It is very promising that the future of medicine will incorporate both systems, enabling a more powerful form of medicine to emerge. When viewing the animal that has developed a cancer, an wholistic therapist observes which systems are “weak” and focuses the therapies to strengthen that part, encouraging a stronger “whole” to develop.

From a scientific nutritional analysis point of view, blood analysis for biochemistry, electrolytes and biopsies including hair analysis for heavy metals and toxins can be performed. In TCVM terms systems are organised for mathematical clarity using a five element procedure. This does require further study, just as one would first study basic arithmetic before enrolling in a calculus subject in order to understand mathematical equations. A basic understanding can be described in several minutes, however, it may take a lifetime to perfect these skills! This should not

s discourage one from incorporating some of the principles of health care that can and should achieve good results. This is the “art” behind the science of integrative medicine. Years of study can delve into the science – indeed most holistic practitioners study via various colleges. The internet is a highway tool to discover the wealth of PhD students allocating global time into researching why the basic rule of health care: clean living, exercise, and good food works best. If you are interested in learning more about how to help your pet, Animal Wellness has an exciting line-up of lectures ahead – many of them will be free at libraries around Brisbane! Are you stressed, fatigued and unmotivated? Could your digestive system be making you unhappy? Could you solve your happiness puzzle with these missing puzzle pieces? Could it be bacteria? Researchers at McMaster University have supportive evidence that bacteria residing in the gut influence brain chemistry and behaviour. When there was a change in the gut flora of the test subjects increased anxiety and behaviour change was noted. For years these bacterias have been seen to be harmless, but the negative impact of specific strains of bacteria on the brain are documented. Pathogenic bacteria have the potential to cause havoc on your digestive system and indirectly may cause Serotonin to drop. Serotonin is your happy, relaxing neurotransmitter. Not many people are aware that it is predominantly made in the gut. Functional bacteria (the good guys) are often overlooked, they assist in breaking down your food and keeping your gut healthy.

What about heavy metals? Do you have amalgam dental fillings? Have you worked in the mines? Or in close contact with metals such as an electrician using copper wiring? Do you use copper cookware? Or drink from copper pipes? Heavy metals are linked to depression, fatigue, erratic moods, digestive problems and many other neurologic issues. HRT and use of the pill can cause copper to increase – this is because of the high levels of oestrogen, the likely symptoms could be unexplained headaches, PMS, depression and mood swings. Heavy metals should always be tested.

Do I have the condition pyroluria? A very strange word, I know, maybe that is why so many people haven’t heard of it? Pyroluria is a genetically determined metabolic condition. If you have this condition your demand for certain nutrients (particularly B6 and zinc) is high. These two nutrients are essential for neurotransmitter production, such as serotonin and dopamine. Pyrolurics are more likely to suffer with depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, autism, alcoholism, strong fatigue, temper outbursts, IBS, joint pain, memory loss, or low stress tolerance.

What about your nutrient absorption? Most people who come to the clinic eat a fairly good diet, some exceptional! But they still feel unhealthy. Many triggers such as stress, food intolerances, bacterial overgrowth and hormone imbalance may result in poor nutrient absorption, so no matter how clean your diet is you may not be getting the full reward until it is corrected. Clinically there is testing to determine the extent of damage to the gut lining.
