follow your bliss! four years, people who are daring to be themselves and sharing their amazing gifts with the world. Then there are those ‘whispers in my ear’ over the last few years from people who could ‘see me’ and trusted in my vision and this has allowed me to explore more of me even beyond the realms of the magazine. How can I thank-you all enough? This has been a life changing time and it is my intention to continue to provide windows for people to see what is possible and to show that ‘whole person change’ can and does occur. More and more people are living and breathing this in each moment and evolution is occurring.
he last few months have been quite introspective and reflective for me and it’s been a time of transition moving to leafy Buderim. This has allowed me to tap into the expansive bigger picture as well as remember to live moment by moment. From the conversations I’ve had with many people it also seems to be a time of letting go of the old ways of operating and creating a new lifestyle on a totally different level than before. So this month our contributors have covered some different perspectives on lifestyle transition and how to work with it. Four years of creating HBM…Wow! Every year and every edition has had twists and turns, gifts and challenges and it continues to grow and unfold in ways that excite me. Amok Cambodian Curry Blend

first tried this curry when I was travelling around South East Asia in the 90’s, so I’m glad to see that it’s making its way into the every day kitchen in Australia now. It’s one of my favourite Asian curries. Amok refers to the term of cooking a curry in banana leaves by steaming. It is a traditional Cambodian national dish with fish being the meat that is mainly used but chicken or vegetables work equally well. The main ingredients of an Amok spice blend are: chilli, coriander, cumin, garlic, ginger, galangal and turmeric. Coconut cream is another vital ingredient which makes it quite a sweet curry. If banana leaves can’t be found you can substitute with baking paper, making small steamed fish parcels and either bake in the oven or use a bamboo steamer. any consumers are confused as to how raw certified organic cacao (pronounced ‘ka-kow’) that you find in the health food shops differs from everyday cocoa powder available on the supermarket shelves – so let’s explore the differences! Raw cacao is by definition lowtemperature processed for maximum nutrient preservation versus the ‘dutch method’ of regular cocoa processing, which can expose it to solvents and high temperatures up to 150 degrees Celsius! A good quality raw cacao powder will be around 25% protein and have notable magnesium content. Antioxidant levels in any food are also affected by the application of heat-organic raw cacao can have up to 360% MORE antioxidants than regular cocoa, measuring 95,000 on
the ORAC antioxidant scale (that’s 21 times more antioxidants than green tea). And finally, regular cocoa production has historically had negative social impacts in the countries where it was produced (just google ‘Ivory Coast chocolate’) like pesticide use, environmental degradation, and the use of indentured or child labour. The organic model for raw cacao production supports small, multi-crop farms that encourage wildlife supportive ecosystems, providing a FAIR, steady price for every ton produced so farmers can resist the urge to over cultivate or poison their land, and can ‘afford’ to keep their children in school. Raw Energy Date, Pecan & Macadamia Slice Ingredients: ½ cup Nui organic coconut f our 2 tbsps organic Power Super Foods Maca/Cacao blend powder 1 cup mixed raw unsalted macadamias and pecans ¼ cup raw macadamias extra ¼ cup dates extra, (not soaked), chopped ¼ cup raw, unhulled tahini ¼ cup Niugini Organics raw organic coconut oil 1 tsp organic vanilla pod extract 1½ cups pitted dates, soaked overnight in a little water Method: Line a slice tray with baking paper. Blitz the cup of raw nuts until crumb like texture. Blend dates to make a paste. Combine the tahini, coconut oil and date paste together in a large bowl. Add in the coconut f our and maca blend powder, combine well. Stir through the extra macadamia nuts and dates. Spread mixture out onto the lined tray, press down. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours or until really f rm. Cut

Raw Fruit Pie Base: 2 cups soaked almonds, rinsed and drained 1 cup natural raisins ½ cup natural dates ¼ cup desiccated coconut ¼ tsp cinnamon spice A little water, orange juice or honey Preparation: Process the nuts and dried fruit in food processor. Add remaining ingredients and process until mixture is combined. Press into a prepared pie shell, and set aside.
Filling: 2 cups frozen banana pieces ½ cup blueberries or raspberries 1 cup frozen mango pieces 1 cup of pureed cashew cream (see recipe IN THE RAW book) 1 tsp vanilla essence
Berry Sauce: 1 cup dates 1 cup frozen mixed berries 1 cup boiling water
Preparation: Place frozen fruit into food processor and process/blend until mixture is creamy. Add cashew puree and vanilla essence. Pour into your prepared pie shell and serve with Berry Sauce and a sprinkle of shredded coconut.
Preparation: Soak the dates in boiling water. When it cools, drain off a little of the liquid. Blend the dates with frozen berries until you are happy with the texture. Serve a dollop over each frozen fruit pie piece. Will keep in the refrigerator for a week, or freeze for 3 months.

Ryzogalo (Greek Rice Pudding) By Scott Mathias
Ingredients: 2-3 cups cashew or almond milk 2 cups soaked hemp seeds (soak for 1 hour – drain off water) ½ cup of macadamia nut f nes or f nely crushed macadamia nuts 1 fresh smashed banana 4-5 tbsp agave nectar ½ cup of soaked raisins or sultanas Splash of agave to garnish Sprinkle of cinnamon Preparation: Mix all the ingredients except the cinnamon into a mixing bowl and lightly blend. You are looking for a solid to smooth consistency. Add more or less milk to achieve a ‘rice pudding’ disposition. Serve in individual serving glasses. Top off with a splash of Cinnamon and a dash of Agave and a fruit berry if desired.

e’ve been taught over the years to avoid fats, in particular saturated fat. This widespread misconception is now being reversed as we are rediscovering the contrary. Good fats play a vital role in our health and nutrition. Mother nature’s plant based saturated fat, coconut oil, offers amazing health and beauty benefits that work both on the inside and out.
Hormone Health Leading researcher in the field of hormones, Dr Raymond Peat, says that taking coconut oil daily with a balanced diet, lowers cholesterol through it’s conversion into pregnenolone. Life and the moments in time By Sue Joseph, Owner of Daisy’s Place and Bassett Barks
here are definitely moments in your life, where, you are able to feel, that your next decision will be like the movie, Sliding Doors. But which road do you take? A group of words that changed my life were – “You had better earn it because I ain’t going to give you any” – the subject at that moment was money, but where that small group of words was going to take me, at that time, I had no idea. A little bit like, when you hear the words, I love you. Actually, both of those sentences have seen me take roads that have brought to my life much joy and at the same time much sadness. I didn’t know it at the ripe old age of fifteen, but I decided to earn it – not marry. But, you see, I had plans, some people would call it a vision, what I didn’t know at that point was, for this to unfold, I had to really work hard to earn the amount of money that I planned for, it also meant – big decisions would have
to happen. So after a couple of years, I went on a journey into hard work and making the plan work – thank goodness I had been disciplined as a child; I was taught my future depends on many things, but mostly on me. And I didn’t question this. Have a vision, articulate, passionately own it and relentlessly drive it to completion. I became a massive learning machine, lucky for me I had some great teachings already and I had been taught from a young age to work hard and never give up. Energy and persistence conquer all things and I had been taught that if I did things to help others and be grateful for what I have, I would be able to make my plan happen. I still live by that today. But, even with a good base, I had no idea of what it all really meant. One of the most valuable lessons is being very adaptable to change - to enjoy the many roads that we all will face. I also learnt very quickly – the price
of greatness is responsibility. To know that I am responsible for everything, all of my actions or nonactions, it was still all about me. In my journey to create my plan I also have come to understand that it doesn’t matter what position you hold, it is always about yourself. Sometimes a hard one to swallow but truth is truth and where there is this, there is also love. Big decisions are made in my life everyday but in truth big decisions are what we all face in every moment. Thirty years later, knowing that a small group of words are able to make a difference, but more so, the energy behind the words, I find myself now being able to feel just how many gifts are available to us every day. oing raw doesn’t have to be boring or bland…on the contrary…it might just be the biggest sensation your taste buds have ever experienced! Just ask David Wolfe aka David ‘Avocado’ Wolfe who is a raw food guru, best-selling author and international health consult to the stars. With home bases in Canada and Hawaii, he also tours the world sharing his wisdom and passion for real food and nutrition. Actually to say David is passionate about what he does is an understatement; he is a walking, talking encyclopaedia of knowledge and an example of what it means to be blissfully healthy. David was born into a healthwise family, with both parents practising 14
doctors, although his personal journey with whole foods began when he was 18 years old after discovering he had food allergies and more specifically, an issue with dairy products. Even though he was studying law and mechanical engineering at the time, nutrition went from being his secret hobby to eventually developing into a life long career and he’s inspired people all over the world now for nearly 20 years! One of the reasons David is so popular is he is incredibly dynamic and insightful, he just has a way of making an orange sound like it’s the most fascinating thing you’ll ever eat and experience. So I was fortunate to talk to David this month about going raw and how he maintains vibrant health:
Vanessa: What advice do you have for people adding raw foods into the diet or starting a raw food lifestyle? David: My number one recommendation would be to go organic and look at the quality of food you’re eating. We have come through an age of quantity with a lack of quality. Extraordinary quality is possible if you chose it. Organic food is where we can begin. Then secondly, we can start getting fresh organic vegetable juice into our body so that 20 minutes later we feel the charge. I’m a big fan of celery as the base of all vegetable juices. Then the next step would be more blended food and less eating of food. Make the shake or smoothie idea a part of your operating system. You can take coconut

at it more rationally. If you are in a high altitude place you need to eat things that will be supportive of being at that high altitude and eat within your climatic zone. So if you are in the Andes you can have Maca and cacao in The Himalayas you can also have shilajit or snow lotus. I do drink teas if I’m in a cold climate that’s just how you manage your body temperature. But I‘ve lived for ten years without cooked food even throughout winter. I believe in yin and yang exercise and I do both. Yin exercises are Yoga, Chi Gong and then the Yang exercise give you the quick, burst explosive types of training. I also believe in not overexercising, the research is showing if you exercise too much you can oxidise your body and that adds to your biological stress. To ground myself I use earthing products which are great for travellers

and you can even ground yourself at the 13th level of a hotel. There are a lot of times where we can’t be bare foot on the ground. So you can eliminate jet lag and manage stress with earthing products and specific periods of dawn and dusk sun gazing. For the last year, David has focussed on television as a medium to share his message and plans to do more so he can reach more people, be home more, travel less and farm more. That was how I ended up at an acupuncturist, a health issue guided me to this man who said, “Everything you need to know in life, you already have inside”. He taught
me how to enter that place of hidden treasures, unlimited knowledge, to find and connect to the truth of who I am. Learning meditation was a powerful and life changing experience. This opened doors to places I had never known, and the wisdom that was offered to me was and is, constantly allowing me to change. Nobody told me until that day, that I had all the answers within. Meditation has been the most powerful tool of my transition and will be until the day I leave this earthly plane. My lifestyle transitioned from being asleep, unaware and dense of physicality, to being higher vibration, highly intuitive, light, inspired and free. Questions arose, answers were found, or I was directed to places and people who had the answers. All I had to do was follow the guidance that my spirit was giving me. I discovered that intuition is an incredibly accurate navigator of life and as I surrendered to the wisdom of it, my life improved profoundly. When we change ONE thing in
life for something better, everything changes. Our personal vibration rises, and then we interact differently with life. As I embraced ancient teachings, concepts, remembered my power, owned my souls path and surrendered to my spirit, those around me were offered the opportunity to shift. Some did, and many didn’t, as what was occurring for me was quite confronting for others. As I reflect back on that part of my life, I see that I was a seed of unlimited potential, frozen by the fear of what was possible, terrified to change anything. I found the “earth, air, water and light” to nurture that part of my world, to grow my potential and to this day, I tend to that precious part of me constantly. Dedication to my spirit revealed my soul’s pathway so I can help people to remember who they truly are, by being a catalyst for change and reminding them that they have everything they need to know within.

hat if you could change your life with one blink just like ‘I dream of Jeanne’? What if it was simple as ‘thinking’ about what you want to be, do, have for your heart’s desires? What if a lifestyle transition was a breath away? That is how simple it is to have a lifestyle transition. This is exactly what I did, moving from an ‘accepted role and occupation’ to an ‘alternative profession’. You see I grew up in Kuwait with the full intensity of being a suppressed female. Women knew their place. In this situation my life was poor in money, belongings and love. My ‘teaching’ was about what was acceptable and ‘normal’ in society. So with that I chose to do nursing, autopsies and pathology. But there was something else that was actually happening. I was making a lifestyle change very slowly. You see I have a gift of seeing the anatomy and physiology within people to identify their potential.
I needed to understand how to translate what I was seeing and knew in to everyday language and that was palatable for all to understand to see their own potential and know everything is possible. As I did these ‘normal’ jobs I knew there would be a day when I was ready to ‘come out of the closet’ and have You see I have a gift of seeing the anatomy and physiology within people to identify their potential. a lifestyle transition that showed the real me. It came with continual closing of my eyes and visualising and thinking what I wanted and feeling as though I had already created it and breathing deeply as I integrated these new concepts and way of being. Sure enough, voila! The lifestyle change was letting my nursing registration go after 15 years and commencing a global practice and
company in teaching Medical Intuition. Yes it was simple and all I needed to do was tap in to the childlike quality of ‘beingness’. With that lifestyle transition came letting go of people, things, situations and my old belief systems of limitations. What a relief as I let go, the fabulous ‘newness’ came in. I knew I was on the right path as everything flowed and came with such ease. So why am I sharing this? Sometimes we are guided gently and sometimes we are ‘pushed’ to a lifestyle change. The best way is to know what you want, see it in your mind, breathe it in to your cells and know it is coming. A lifestyle transition can be easy or hard depending on what you would like. What does it take to
change your life?

o you KNOW it’s time for a change in your life? Have you ever noticed change in your life actually leads to something better? Let me ask you this: what if the uncomfortableness around lifestyle transitions is the universe’s way of getting you to look at the fact that something has to change? From my point of view, lifestyle transition is change. It’s when real change is occurring, where your life feels different, and where it fundamentally shows up different.
See, 13 years ago I was on the verge of suicide. I literally told the universe, “something has to change or I’m getting off this planet!” The reason I’m still here is I got an awareness that something different was actually possible. I think a lot of us have succumbed to the idea that the life we currently have is the only one we can have. What if that’s not true? What if you’ve got a far greater world of possibilities that you haven’t been willing to acknowledge? In order to change your life, be willing to have anything in your life change. In being willing to have things change, you can continue to move forward because you don’t have the need to hold something in place as it was.
So what does it take to change your whole life? I’ve worked with people all over the world to create change and one of the major parts of that is simply asking questions. Until you ask a question, you’re stuck in what makes you believe you have no other choice.
5 steps to change anything in your life right now 1. Make a demand – as in, “Hey, this is going to change and something else is going to show up.” 2. Ask a question – as in, “Hey, what’s it going to take for this to show up differently?”
3. Destroy and uncreate everything in the way – Run the Access Clearing Statement to undo everything that doesn’t allow that change to show up in your life. 4. Now, CHOOSE (and ACT) – It’s the choice that actually creates a different potential for the future, so you have to choose and act on it to create the change. 5. Finally, receive everything – For things to change, you have to be willing to receive everything that shows up, even if it’s not the way you expected. And please know – it will probably look completely different than you’ve ever imagined. From that place, you can begin creating the change you’re looking for. And if it doesn’t show up tomorrow – you are NOT wrong, my friend. It will occur. You have started! Right now… by reading this. Transition to a Life of
Presence and Joy

recall a moment that initiated a significant shift in my life journey. I was a dental therapist in the NT working on an aboriginal community tending the dental health of the local children. A group of dentists had gone fishing barramundi at a remote billabong skirted by boulders which led to a distant deep red rock escarpment. Being a vegetarian, I wandered off to investigate the tiny rock wallabies native to the area, living in the cracks between nature’s stone sculptures. Discovering skeleton bones in a crevice I realized it was sacred ground. Seated on a large flat rock facing a crimson sunset, I dropped into a meditative reverie. Those moments ignited in me a deep heartfelt desire for something more from life. Upon returning to Katherine, I quit dental work and booked to attend a yoga teacher training course in an Ashram Yoga Community set in beautiful bushland. This became a journey of eight years of organic and ecological
lifestyle, selfless service or seva with yoga and meditation training. The symbolic donning of orange robes, shaving of the head and simple natural lifestyle was a journey of community and self-discovery. The learning I gleaned from this time in so many ways has formed the foundation of my life’s work. Learning and growing continues to this day, as I embrace each step of the journey, drinking deeply of this cup of life. Now in my crone or wisdom years I am grateful for the sense of peaceful purpose I enjoy. I understand life is indeed a journey of a thousand miles which starts with a single step. Each step offers us an opportunity to embrace truth now. The beauty of nature I enjoy each day in my Hinterland garden fills my heart with gratitude and constantly reminds of the perfection that exists all around me. Accepting life as it is, is not always this easy or pleasurable however resistance to life as I have experienced,
only exacerbates our pain and suffering. I know how hard it can be to surrender to what is, especially when it involves grief and loss. We are all equal in this. Each of us comes with a unique set of karmic or soul lessons. Embracing the learning and wisdom life offers in each moment can be a humbling experience, yet it opens us to the wonder and beauty of this gift of life. The choice is always ours. We may stubbornly choose resentment, resistance, blame and shame which will harden our hearts or we may choose compassion, forgiveness and love towards self and others which will soften us like lotus petals opening to the light of the sun. It is not easy to release the past and embrace this gift of presence however herein lies the true treasure of life. It is an honor to act as a facilitator to those brave souls who choose to make this shift from suffering into joyful love and acceptance of the beauty offered to us in wonderful adventure called life on earth. www.sorayasaraswati.com

How to Make Authentic and

ife-transitions f both b excite and elicit fear within us. Yet it is often life’s challenges that make us stronger and more resilient. While we make lifestyle transitions throughout our lives, such as beginning primary school, then high school and graduation, we often do not acknowledge the full ramifications of these changes. This can leave us feeling disjointed and confused without knowing why. Throughout history and across cultures, significant life changes were publicly acknowledged through ritual and celebration. While we still have some celebration such as graduation and marriage, often the true meaning and significance of the transition is lost. Taking the time to reflect and explore life-transitions is essential if we are really going to grasp the journeys we walk. Self-understanding, which stems from consciously exploring transitions, often prevents mental conflict, lack of commitment to our future potential and even episodes of anxiety and depression.
Processing Life-Transitions How many times have you found yourself floundering through major life decisions? Do you feel overwhelmed or jittery when facing change? “Processing” life-transitions is all about making sense of the transition in relation to previous experience, identity and values, so you remain in the driver’s seat. Asking ourselves “what really matters?” can anchor our deepest reason for carrying through with significant life journeys, even when it gets tough and we want to give up or run in the opposite direction. It may also highlight why we are choosing to partake in a transition before we go there. This is especially important if the choice is not aligned with our inner truth. Rather than being a leaf in the wind, we can steer our life direction with self-awareness and understanding of what is important to us. So to “process” transition is to consciously explore it and become aware of its significance in relation to ourselves. Authentic Life Directions Aligning intention with what is important to us may sound obvious,
however it is amazing how much trust and courage this really takes. For example, try to visualise publicly exclaiming your deepest hopes and dreams... This exercise shows just how daunting this process really is. It is one thing to walk down the aisle and say “I do”, it is another thing to authentically express what intimacy and marriage means to each of us. For this purpose, therapy can give us a helping hand. The Therapeutic relationship is designed to be a safe, respectful environment to discover purpose, meaning and direction. Therapy helps in life-transitions through promoting exploration while providing unconditional regard and support. It also sets aside structured time allocated to make sense of the meaning of the transition. So next time you find yourself embarking on a significant life change, consider honouring your personal process and create the time and space required to connect to your authentic self in a therapeutic relationship. e are all infinite beings with the capacity to connect with our true spiritual self. I discovered this through the power of meditation and the healing power of Reiki. As a house painter, I had a lot of time to think about my life and my life purpose. Like many people, I knew I had a greater purpose but never knew what that was. After researching the benefits of meditation, I started meditation practice on a daily basis. Before long, I noticed improvements in my stress levels, general wellbeing and attitude to life. After a few years of meditating I was introduced to Reiki and was attuned to Usui Reiki 1. This was the turning point in my life. I knew at this point that this was my path. Reiki is universal life force energy. In a non-invasive way, it treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit and creates many beneficial effects including relaxation and feelings
of peace, security and wellbeing. My Reiki teacher identified the natural gift of healing within me and nurtured this gift through the teaching of Usui Reiki 2 and Usui Reiki Master. My natural healing ability and spiritual intuition grew exponentially under her guidance. I felt that this was my true calling and that the time was right to focus on Reiki as a career. I gave painting away and have not looked back. Through this process I have made connections with my spirit guides and angels including Archangel Michael. I work with and channel their energies during healing sessions as well utilising crystal and aura healing. I have since become a Seichim Reiki Master and Karuna Healing Master. It was the first time, my Reiki teacher has been able to teach these courses in an accelerated timeframe. My healing gift enabled me to be open to receive the attunements. With this knowledge and experience, I have developed an exclusive technique

This desire needs to be based on what makes your heart sing, your mouth smile warmly, your eyes open wide and your body feel light. Even if itâ€™s phenomenally different to what society says, your parents say or even your friends say. You see every â€˜bodyâ€™ around us is a transmitter to the universe. Each â€˜bodyâ€™ is capable of sending out signals to the furthest corners of the galaxy, and beyond. It is much more powerful to use bodies and authentic communication when talking to the universe. Sustainability’ is now a household word in Australia. It is used, bandied around and paid ‘lip service’ to in all sectors of society – Government, Corporate, Community and in private homes. The awareness is there yet how many of us live in a way that has zero impact on our beautiful planet? How can we reduce our use of natural resources and support the environment while meeting all our needs? It’s been an amazing transition over the last 35 years since first becoming active in environmental issues as a tertiary student. In those days there was virtually no recycling, energy use was
increasing, consumerism was accelerating and growing food at home had become quite a rare sight. I became quite depressed and disillusioned campaigning against uranium mining and warning people about ‘global warming’. At twenty two I chose to not read newspapers, watch TV or listen to radio to protect myself from all the ‘bad news’. Pretty radical, I know, but it was the transition I needed to look after myself. I promised myself I wouldn’t work at anything I didn’t enjoy and that didn’t make a positive difference in the world. I’ve mostly honoured that and live a simple lifestyle grounded in the 3 Permaculture
Ethics of Earth Care, People Care and Resource Sharing. Doing a Permaculture Design Course 30 years ago helped me to see positive solutions where I noticed problems and say YES! to creative change rather then saying NO! Stop… Since those days I see so much more sustainability – green bags everywhere, mostly 4 cylinder cars, recycling across all shires, grid interactive solar and solar hot water systems routinely installed, organic food easily available, composting and worm farming in suburban backyards, gardening and sustainability skills courses supported by council, many books on sustainability, home food

Five Key Steps for Transition
Choose a more sustainable way of living, NOW! State a goal to aim for then set an intention to make gradual improvements that lead towards how you’d like to be living. Write them down to give them more power and to ensure you remember. Brainstorm different changes you’d like to make and activate them one by one as if on a magical journey of transformation. Check back in with yourself regularly to see how you’re going. Find a friend with a similar intent and support each other to make the changes.

Reduce the amount of ‘stuff’ you purchase and spend your money with sustainability in mind. Every time you buy something ask yourself “Do I really need this?”, “Is it an ethical product that hasn’t cost the earth?”, “Does it support a sustainable business, community organisation or Fair Trade?”, “Is the packaging minimal and can it be easily recycled?”. Minimise the amount of fossil fuel that is used by making trips multi-functional, reducing outings, car pooling or using public transport as much as possible. Ride a bicycle if that’s practical. Choose to live close to goods and services or bulk buy with friends. Recycle as much as you can and reduce the waste you create. Compost your food waste and if possible convert to a compost toilet, solar hot water and purchase environmentally sound building materials for renovations and home building.
Grow your own food, eat organically and buy local produce. This is the single most effective way to make a difference to your own sustainability quickly and cut down on the fossil fuel use it takes to get food to you. It also adds to your own health and longevity as well as supporting local producers to continue supporting you. Learn more about sustainability. Join a Transition Towns initiative in your area or research this and start your own. Do a Permaculture course and join a local group to get inspired. Take a course or learn more about living simply, growing food and supporting our beautiful planet. Educate yourself about passive solar design, food miles, ethical investment, Fair Trade, soil health and sustainable landuse.
Look after yourself and your energy levels. Take time out and spend time in nature to nourish your own wellbeing and sustain yourself. Check that the work you’re doing is sustaining you and helps you to be happy while not being harmful to the planet. Change jobs if need be. Be gentle on yourself and know that change is usually very effective if it’s slow and gradual. Remember to celebrate each step you take and share your achievements to inspire others.

Time for Change in Business and in Life? By Angelle Laurence
e all know change
can be uncomfortable and difficult, ironically, even if it is change we have created. When it is change imposed upon us, the degree of difficulty skyrockets. How do I know? Because not only is transformation and change a key area of my expertise in the business world, but my own personal need for variety in life results in regular and significant change. Even when I have delighted in creating the change, at some point in the process, I ask myself “why can’t I just settle for the same old and have it easier?” So what are the secrets to navigating this discomfort and creating smooth, easy to live with change? Working with the business and corporate sectors on a whole range of transformation and change projects over the years has led me to specialise in making a difference through the “how” change gets done. The good
news is what works incredibly well in business also works in our personal life. We all know good communication, logistics and planning are needed to create a change in our business. They cover the what, why, and when, which can be predictably implemented with excellence. But the wild card in the change equation is the human side. Dealing with this consciously and fearlessly is the secret to what makes the difference. The true power lies in “how” the intangible, non-logical, feeling side is handled. At the heart of the “how” are our emotions. So quick tips for handling the “how” of change, begins with three steps. Clarify factually what the change is, what it means to us and how we feel about it. Clear our unsupportive and negative reactions and fears. Create an action plan that empowers us to deal with it and create new possibilities and opportunities. It’s time to be honest with ourselves about how we really feel about this change. By acknowledging and
experiencing the emotions we feel in directed ways, we deal with what is really there. This allows us to identify what we are dealing with. We typically experience some fear, grief and a sense of loss or threat during this transition phase of moving from what is familiar and comfortable to the new way of doing and often being. We now move to a space where we can use a range of practical techniques and tools to clear our emotions. We can use energy medicine techniques, visualization, reframing, elevation strategies or story telling as some of the many ways we can clear our emotions that feel “stuck”. By consciously facing and clearing our emotions we receive the gift of clarity, which is the essential ingredient to creating something even more beautiful and positive out of our change journey. fake it baby
here was a time when it was frowned upon to fake it. After all fake is never as good as the real thing right? Well when it comes to fashion, I beg to differ. Fake fur is far superior to the real, awfully cruel stuff. And fake leather? Yes please. Before you gasp at me in astonishment, let me explain why I would prefer to wear a faux fur jacket over a real one and my al-cheapo shoes from Payless over some expensive leather ones. Did you know that millions of animals each year are still skinned for their coats? Did you know that it takes more than 60 times more energy to produce a fur coat from ranch-raised animals than to create a synthetic one? Yikes! Even Karl Lagerfeld, who scoffed at faux fur five years ago, created an entire collection of faux fur for Chanel’s fall 2010 collection. “Technical advances are so perfect you can hardly tell fake fur from the real thing,” he said. “You cannot fake chic but you can be chic in fake fur.”
Let’s move on to leather. Leather is everywhere, I know. Here’s an idea of what happens to your leather, before it even gets to the designer: it starts with breeding and raising the animals, transporting feed, removing animal waste, powering housing and killing facilities, the use of vaccines and antibiotics, and removing carcasses and transferring pelts. At the tannery, the skins are sorted, soaked, fleshed, tanned, wrung, dried, kicked, cleaned, trimmed, buffed, dried again, finished, then transported to the garment maker, wholesaler, and so on. Every year, more than a billion animals are stunned, hung upsidedown, bled to death, and skinned in slaughterhouses. It then takes a huge amount of energy and hazardous chemicals, including mineral salts, formaldehyde, coal-tar derivatives, and various oils, dyes, and finishes, some of them cyanide-based, to preserve the skins and also tan them. These chemicals affect the locals who work in and live near tanneries. In India, Bangladesh and China there are many cases of disease amongst tannery workers
with Amanda Rootsey and in the US, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that the incidence of leukemia among residents in an area near one tannery in Kentucky was five times the U.S. average. I’m not saying my cheap shoes from Payless are perfect – they certainly are not. But there are lots of options now that are much more luxurious and more eco-friendly than plain old PVU. For example, Stella McCartney has created absolutely beautiful, completely vegan shoes. In fact, they say on their website that, “Because of the scientific research that goes into creating these blended fibres and subsequently, their scarcity, innovative materials could be considered a true luxury rather than leather which has become a commodity.” I couldn’t agree more. am often asked the question; does using an organic skin care product really make a difference? The answer is simple, yes! The biggest message I always try to get across to consumers is that your skin is your body’s largest organ and a lot of what we put onto it absorbs into the blood stream. We need to look after it! The first step is to start researching and having a look at the ingredients that are on those labels; don’t fall for false fancy marketing claims and pretty packaging, look a little bit closer. The biggest problem with these products is that we pile copious amounts of them onto our skin on a daily basis. If you think about it we wake up, shower with a body wash, apply our moisturizer, make-up, deodorant, perfume and the list goes on! To put simply, let’s call this the ‘layering effect.’ We don’t think about it, but can you imagine the layers upon layers of chemicals that are piling up onto our skin? Let’s talk about a few common chemicals. Here is something all of us use,
fragrances. Yes fragrances may smell nice, but trust me; there is nothing pretty about it. Fragrance on a label can indicate the presence of up to four thousand separate ingredients, many toxic or carcinogenic. Not to mention the common anti freeze propylene glycol! This little nastie is found in many cosmetics and has a rap sheet too long to mention. In a nutshell, it is a petro chemical that penetrates the skin and can weaken protein and cellular structure. Next is parabens, often found in something we all trust. Our moisturiser. Here is a perfect example. I was out to lunch with my mother and she pulled out a hand cream that she had been using for years. I couldn’t believe my eyes as I saw my own mother, blissfully unaware lathered her hands with a product that contained two parabens and other toxic chemicals. Sometimes I feel like my voice gets lost at sea. Thankfully, most of the time these little nasties have been exposed and consumers are staying away from these synthetic ingredients.
The biggest issue is that companies will often sprout about what they don’t contain and give consumers a false impression that their products are free of nasties. It does seem daunting to research all ingredients however the more you look, you will start to recognise the same ingredients popping up time and time again. How can you skip the legwork and still purchase a safer product? I would suggest buying an Australian certified organic product that contains an organic processor number. This means every raw ingredient has been scrutinised. The storage, packing and labeling MUST be approved by the organic certifier or it will never hit the market as an organic product. It is not as easy as paying a fee. To pass the Australian government organic and biodynamic standards you have to be squeaky-clean and a company’s core message and integrity is often visible. Paws 4 Thought! This month Australia’s Pupcake Queen, Tanya Arnold interviews two adventurous golden retrievers about their life changing transition from New Zealand to Australia. Q. Buddy and Gemma, moving to a different country would have been quite a change, were you aware that your family was preparing for a big move? A. The first sign was when the furniture was removed from our home. Then, like usual, we went to our friend’s place, for what we thought was a play date. The alarm bells went off when our family drove away and left us behind! Days had passed by and we didn’t see our family. All we could do was pray that we would see them again. Q. Was this your first time on a plane and were you afraid of flying? A. Buddy: Neither of us had flown
before. I remember we pulled up to the Airport all excited, not knowing what this new place was. Then we were checked in, and they asked us to hop into a crate. I remember thinking “You can’t be serious! I’m not getting into that tiny little box!” I’m not one who usually copes well with change. My sister Gemma however was so thrilled and excited that she was going on a new adventure. I tried my best to keep up with her positive attitude but at times it was a little overwhelming. Q. Did it take you long to adjust to the Australian way of life? A. When we arrived at the Brisbane Airport we were so hungry. It seemed like forever that we were on that plane. Then we saw our Dad and we were so happy. Our tails almost fell off with excitement. We learnt that no matter where we are, as long as we are with our family, we are home. Australia is different to New Zealand.
When we lived in New Zealand we had a much bigger backyard. We would head into the bushland and search for rabbits. Now, in Australia, we spend a lot of time at the beach. Every day we go for a walk along the sandy shores and play. We love it because we can swim in the water, play in the sand and meet many new friends every day. Q. Overall, what has been the greatest lesson from this experience? A. It has taught us that with time, we do easily adapt and eventually become comfortable with our new surroundings. It’s all in the mind really. If we choose to see the positive side of the situation, that’s exactly what we will experience. We made the choice to make the most of our new home and have loved every minute of it.

Healing through horses By Veronica Garrett
s a Naturopath in the early 90’s I specialised in Energy Medicine, Feldenkreis, Chakra healing and Applied Kinesiology and loved the left brain, scientific approach to healing but all that was about to change after my mare India had a horrific accident. As she recovered I noticed she would eat specific plants and trees in our garden, vegetation that she had never eaten before or since. It was a light bulb moment as I realised she knew intuitively what her body needed selecting plants and ‘weeds’ that I had spent the past 5 years studying…healing was that simple if I could only let go of ego and trust my ‘instincts’. The next 10 years was spent balancing ‘science’ with the world of Metaphysics, trying to put it all together from a bigger picture perspective. During that time I saw many animal patients, horses, cats and dogs along with their owners. I gradually began to see the connection between the two and how there was a definite symbiotic energy transference of symptoms with the animals in many cases mirroring the emotions of their
owners. This approach was a little ‘fringe’ for the mid 90’s so I focused on my own horses who were taking me on another more personal journey to raise my own vibration through self awareness. I had always been interested in interspecies communication and energy medicine, how every thought and emotion is a vibration that we put out to the world and saw how my horses were responding on a practical level to what each human was ‘carrying’ in their energy field. As we began to attract clients some would arrive with assorted physical ailments and emotional issues with symptoms that would disappear after spending time with our horses. They would cry and release old programs after being with a horse of their choice…the horses were getting through where no human practitioner could. Most importantly because the changes were made at the higher ‘blueprint’ level the transformations were deep and permanent. We had taken ‘naturopathy’ back to its original intent… healing through nature We then had a visit from author Ken Grimmer ‘The Thinking Heart’
who explained that our horses, through a phenomenon of Quantum Physics called Entrainment were changing the human energy field…we now had our connection…The link between Science and Metaphysics with the Chakras and the Endocrine system representing this interface of ‘energy into matter’ on the physical level. Bypassing the subconscious mind our horses teach us to trust our inner wisdom which transmutes any ‘dis-ease’ sitting in our lower Chakras allowing the body to self heal. Our horses teach us that healing is simple and that the most powerful vibration we can ever communicate is our INTENTION of unconditional love.

I Dream By Mary-Lou Stephens
f one more person said to me “When one door closes another one opens,” I was going to throttle them. But you know what? They were right. For years I’d been playing in bands, touring and releasing CDs. I’d had a great time but I was getting nowhere. When my last band broke up I knew I couldn’t do it any more. I was heartbroken and exhausted and had no idea what to do next. My only tertiary qualification was a diploma in performing arts and, at the age of thirty-five with no skills other than acting and performing, a series of dead-end jobs was all I could envisage. Weeks after the band’s last performance, I woke to the seven am news on my clock radio. Half asleep, I heard the Queen sending her condolences to the people of Tasmania. That’s how I found out about the Port Arthur massacre. In shock and grief I went home to Tasmania for the memorial service. There, quite coincidently, I met up with an acquaintance who was broadcasting the service for the ABC. He took me to lunch later that week. I told him about the band breaking up and, even though it seemed trivial in the context of the horror at Port Arthur, how lost I was. He paused, looked at me and uttered one life-changing sentence. ‘Mary-Lou, you want to be in radio.’ I knew he was right. It was a pure light bulb moment. ‘I do,’ I said.‘But I didn’t realise that
until right now. How did you know?’ ‘Because I know radio and I know you,’ he said. ‘It’s a perfect match.’ It was true. I came alive when I was being interviewed in a radio studio. I loved the sense of performance. I’d performed all my life in one form or another. Radio condensed performance down to one person, one microphone, one listener. A pure connection. Days later, through another friend, I found out about The Australian Film Television and Radio School and on my return to Sydney I was asked to present a program for a public radio station. Within a week of discovering my true vocation I was being offered a gig on air. The doors continued to fly open. With help and support, and after three rounds of auditions, I was accepted into AFTRS and less than a year later I landed my first professional job in radio. I had always thought I’d be a famous singer/songwriter, and who knows, I may still be yet, but when I let go of that dream and dared to dream another, I discovered a whole new life of adventure, creativity and fulfillment.
