Welcome The theme of this year’s Foyle Film Festival is ‘The Eye of the Camera’ as the programme puts the spotlight on stories of injustice and human rights abuses from around the world.

Hard To Believe is a serious investigation into one of the most harrowing medical crimes of our time – the mass murder of prisoners of conscience in China for the sale of their organs to foreign patients. Ethan Gutmann, the American human rights author who conducted a seven-year investigation into organ harvesting, will introduce the film and take part in a post-screening discussion.

Bastards follows the true story of an illiterate young woman in Morocco who takes on tradition, her own family and the law, for the sake of her illegitimate child. Director Deborah Perkin is the first person to film in a Moroccan family court and attends the festival to talk about her work.

The Mind Of Mark DeFriest takes the viewer deep into the life of a brilliant yet troubled man, and deeper still into a flawed and often brutal system. Mark DeFriest was imprisoned for a minor crime and thereafter condemned to Florida’s most violent prison.

Over 30 years later, Mark is still struggling to survive a rigid and unforgiving system.

Blood Rising follows artist Brian Maguire into the Mexican city of Ciudad Juárez – the most dangerous city in the world – where 438 young women were murdered in 2010 and only two percent of the cases have ever been solved. Their mothers have been ignored by the police, government, judiciary and the media. With no voice to seek justice for their children, they have chosen to work with renowned artist Brian Maguire in order to communicate their stories to the outside world. Brian Maguire and Director Mark McLoughlin will introduce Blood Rising and take part in a post-screening discussion.

A Kind Of Sisterhood highlights the invisible stories of female prisoners during the Northern Ireland conflict. The film unearths

a buried aspect of the conflict brought to the surface by the women who lived it and in their own words. Directors Claire Hackett and Michele Devlin will join some of the women featured in the film in a postscreening discussion.

Tigers, the latest movie from Oscar®-winning Bosnian director Danis Tanović (No Man’s Land), exposes an ongoing scandal that stretches back at least four decades – the marketing of infant formula to mothers in poor countries. The International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN) will introduce the film and participate in a postscreening discussion.

The Foyle Film Festival launches with the NI premiere of Terence Davies’ (Of Time And The City, Distant Voices, Still Lives) latest film Sunset Song. Starring Peter Mullan, Agyness Deyn, Kevin Guthrie and Jack Greenless, the film tells the story of Chris Guthrie (Deyn), a young woman struggling to survive a harsh upbringing with an abusive father (Mullan). After finding happiness with husband Ewan (Kevin Guthrie), her life reverts to type once again when her husband returns from World War I a damaged young man who begins to behave like her father.

Kevin Guthrie will introduce the film and help launch the Foyle Film Festival. Kevin’s latest film Whisky Galore, starring Eddie Izzard, Sean Biggerstaff, James Cosmo and Tim Pigott-Smith, is in post-production and will be released in 2016.

Special events this year include the return of Tom McGrath from New York to his native Ireland to complete a 12-hour marathon to raise funds for the Foyle Hospice. A documentary about Tom’s life, Running Man McGrath receives its World Premiere at this year’s festival with a special screening in the Guildhall.

Other highlights include documentaries on movie icons Orson Welles (Magician: The Astonishing Life And Work of Orson Welles – marking his centenary); Steve McQueen (Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans); and Marlon Brando (Speak To Me Marlon).

Classic screenings include The Last Picture Show, My Beautiful Laundrette and Breakfast At Tiffany’s as part of the BFI LOVE Season.

Foyle Film Festival’s Family Gala this year is the new Disney•Pixar animated feature The Good Dinosaur. While our classic family animation is Aladdin starring the very talented and sadly-missed Robin Williams.

This year, we welcome acclaimed directors Damien O’Donnell (East Is East, Rory O’Shea Was Here) and Jon S. Baird (Filth, Cass) to our ‘From Shorts to Features’ industry conference, on Friday, November 20. The following day, Casting Director Carolyn McLeod will host a masterclass for budding actors looking to hone their craft. Casting for over 16 years, Carolyn has worked with directors including Paul Schrader and Sofia Coppola. Recent features include The Dark Prince with Jon Voight, Walking With The Enemy with Ben Kingsley, and The Liability with Tim Roth and Peter Mullan.

We close proceedings with the Irish premiere of Lily Tomlin’s latest movie Grandma. In this comedy-drama, Grandma Elle (Tomlin) must help her 18-year-old granddaughter deal with an unwanted pregnancy. The Light In Motion (LIM) Competition Awards will be announced before the closing night film.

Kevin Guthrie will introduce Sunset Song and launch the Foyle Film Festival. Kevin trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. In 2013 Kevin was cast in the lead role in Dexter Fletcher’s Sunshine on Leith. 2014 was a busy year for the young actor; as well as filming Sunset Song, Kevin starred in Robert Carlyle’s directorial debut The Legend of Barney Thomson alongside Ray Winstone and Emma Thompson.

Earth is the fundamental element of Terence Davis’ sumptuous Sunset Song, a lyrical adaptation of Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s 1932 novel. Like an elegant love letter to the Scottish soil and the endurance of its people, it makes full use of its anamorphic 65mm format with Michael McDonough’s stunning landscape compositions. Within them lies the estate of Kinraddie in rural Aberdeenshire where the narrative charts the difficulties suffered by Chris Guthrie (Agyness Deyn) as she navigates early womanhood.

The movie is split into three stages of Chris’s life: the first deals with her abusive father (Peter Mullan) and the pain he inflicts on her and the others in the family; the second follows her falling in love and marrying Ewan (Kevin Guthrie); while the third sees Ewan enlisting to fight in World War I and coming

back a damaged young man who starts to resemble her father.

Directed by Alex Fegan (The Irish Pub), Older Than Ireland is a landmark documentary that tells the story of a hundred years of a life as seen through the eyes of thirty Irish men and women aged 100 or over. Often funny and at times poignant, the film explores each centenarian’s journey, from their birth at the dawn of Irish independence to their life as a centenarian in modern day Ireland. Having witnessed a century of immense social, political and technological change, each centenarian has a unique perspective on life and its true meaning.

At the end of the nineteenth century, 16-year-old Jay Cavendish (Kodi SmitMcPhee) journeys across the American frontier in search of the woman he loves. He is joined by Silas (Michael Fassbender), a mysterious traveller, and hotly pursued by an outlaw along the way.

In January 2013, 64-year-old guitarist Wilko Johnson, formerly of Dr Feelgood, was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Refusing chemotherapy, he embraced the clarity brought on by his imminent death and embarked on a farewell tour.

Partisan director Julien Temple, whose documentaries have captured the Sex Pistols, Joe Strummer and Dr Feelgood, enlists his usual expressionistic blend of interview and archive to create a film both esoteric and down-to-earth. Themed extracts for La Bell et la Bête, Orphêe and The Seventh Seal sit comfortably with Johnson’s love of poetry, literature and astronomy, an academic depth that belies his image as a disciple of rock ‘n’ roll. His near-miraculous reprieve after surgery in 2014 gives the film its final act, which is as honest as the first, if more contemplative.

Nicknamed ‘The Wolfpack’, the brothers spend their childhood reenacting their favourite films using elaborate homemade props and costumes. Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Nolan, David Lynch and Martin Scorsese gave them a window to the world (a warped one in some cases but a window nonetheless) and inject badly needed doses of creativity into their lonely, claustrophobic lives.

Leith, North Dakota is a registered ghost town of 24 people. Its inhabitants are mostly farmers or ranchers, with land passed down generation to generation.

The town has an apocalyptic beauty set against a prairie backdrop of wide-open sky and fields of wheat.

In May of 2012, an outsider named Craig Cobb moved in and started buying up property. He accumulated twelve plots of land, some empty, some with houses in various states of disrepair.

The locals thought he’d moved in to be close to the Bakken oil fields some 70 miles north. The truth was much more frightening and sinister as Cobb turns out to be a notorious white separatist who was plotting a takeover of the city government. Shortly after his plans were unveiled, a family of fellow white separatists moved in to start fixing up his properties.

In March 2015, producers Artichoke brought American artist David Best to Derry~Londonderry. Working with volunteers, David built a 72ft high structure at Top of the Hill, and then burned it. Temple aimed to challenge traditional ideas about bonfire burning in Northern Ireland. For the week it was open, it was also a space to pause and reflect, leave messages and let go of the past. The project attracted international media attention when it opened to the public, and its ceremonial burning was watched by thousands.

During the project, a number of people were given video cameras to document their experiences: working on the build through punishing weather conditions, opening it to the public and then watching the burn. Temple Stories sews together the experiences of those involved in what was an unforgettable experience for many.

Foyle Film Festival, in association with Void, is delighted to host a special screening of Blood Rising - a documentary detailing artist Brian Maguire’s portraiture and activism in the Mexican city of Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, since 1994. Ciudad Juarez is now the most dangerous city in the world. 438 young women were murdered there in 2010 and only 2 percent of the cases have been properly investigated.

Their mothers have been ignored by the police, government, judiciary and the media. Nobody listened to the people’s cry for help so now the mothers have chosen to work with renowned artist, Brian Maguire, to communicate their stories to the outside world in the hope that the international pressure may bring some justice to their loss.

But Tom’s visit to Derry also includes the much-anticipated World Premiere of Running Man McGrath as part of this year’s Foyle Film Festival.

Tom McGrath left Fermanagh for the USA, competing in sport with a degree of success. While there he got married, had a family, and got into the bar business.

Over the years Tom’s drinking got out of control and he was hospitalised and given just days to live. Tom promised that if he walked out of the hospital he would stop drinking and start running. He was as good as his word and over the years Tom McGrath has run 100s of miles raising 1,000s of dollars for charitable causes.

The screening will follow an incredible 12-hour marathon in which Tom will continuously run around the Peace Bridge and Foyle Bridge. During the 12 hours Tom will be joined by representatives from the many running clubs from around Derry. Tom will complete his marathon with a special run right into the Guildhall and onto the stage to provide a personal introduction to his life story. Tigers exposes an ongoing scandal that stretches back at least four decades, the marketing of infant formula to mothers in poor countries, which has caused untold suffering and death.

In addition to the fact that breastfeeding is healthier for infants, in countries where clean water is not available, mixing polluted water with milk substitutes produces grave risks.

Tigers is based on the true story of a former Nestlé baby milk salesman in Pakistan called Syed Aamir Raza taking on the industry with the help of IBFAN (the International Baby Food Action Network) when he realises that babies are dying as a result of his work pressuring doctors to promote formula.

Recipients of the Light In Motion (LIM) Awards qualify for consideration in the Short Films Category of the annual Academy Awards® without the standard theatrical run. Since 1999, the Foyle Film Festival has been an Oscar® affiliated festival – one of only a handful of festivals to enjoy this honour.

In addition, Foyle Film Festival also enjoys BAFTA recognition since 2009 and BIFA recognition since 2010.

Over the years, the Festival has been privileged to screen the very best in short film, documentary and animation to local audiences and to support local and international filmmakers through exhibition at Northern Ireland’s only Oscar® affiliated festival.

Previous Foyle Film Festival winners and competitors who have proceeded to win the Oscar® include: Terry George for The Shore in 2012, Martin McDonagh for Six Shooter in 2006, Adam Elliot for Harvie Krumpet in 2003, and Eric Armstrong for Chubbchubbs in 2002.

Other festival award winners who received Oscar® nomination include 2012 finalist Bryan Buckley for Asad; Michael Creagh’s The Crush, LIM Award Winner in Irish Short in 2009; and Juanita Wilson for The Door, recipient of LIM Award for Best International Short 2008.

2008 Best Animation Winner Fabrice O. Joubert also received an Oscar® nod in 2008 for French Roast.

2013 finalist Mr Hublot won the Oscar® in 2014 for Best Short Animation whilst the winner of Best Animation in 2011 at Foyle Film Festival; A Morning Stroll, directed

by Grant Orchard, was nominated at the 2012 finalist Here To Fall, directed

by Evelyn McGrath, was nominated for a BAFTA award in animation in 2013.

Another 2012 finalist, Macropolis by Joel Simon, went on to win the IFTA for Best Animation in 2013. Most recently, the 2014 LIM Award Winner for Best Short Film Parvaneh and Best Animation Winner The Dam Keeper went on to be nominated for an Oscar®.

From Shorts to Features welcomes acclaimed directors Damien O’Donnell (East Is East, Rory O’Shea Was Here) and Jon S. Baird (Filth, Cass). This annual industry event brings full circle the path to Oscar® and BAFTA glory that begins for so many at Foyle Film Festival.

Rising filmmakers will have the chance to learn about the transition from

producing short films to feature length films through an exciting programme of panels, workshops, case studies and screenings led by industry luminaries from Northern Ireland and beyond.

Filmed over eight years, A Turning Tide in the Life of Man follows John O’Brien, a small fisherman from the island of Inis Bó Finne, who embarked on a European campaign to try and regain his ancestral right to fish the seas around Donegal.

The film retraces the origins of the global problems that small fishermen are facing today, the complexity of political decisions involved, and the consequences for the lives of small coastal communities.

6.30PM – 7.22PM THE GHOSTS OF ‘PARADIS’ The “Paradis massacre” was a war crime committed by members of the 14th Company, SS Division “Totenkopf ” on 27 May 1940 during the Battle of France, at a time when the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) was attempting to retreat through the Pas-de-Calais region during the Battle of Dunkirk.

When the British soldiers were captured and executed in May 1940, two of them miraculously escaped, saved by a young woman at the peril of her own life. Ever since, she was known as “Madame Paradis”.

Cert: 15 Peter Bogdanovich’s second movie is an all-time classic. Cleverly adapted from a novel by Larry McMurtry (who co-screenwrote this and Brokeback Mountain), The Last Picture Show is a heartfelt study of a group of young people growing up in a bleak, isolated and rundown West Texas town.

Completely evocative of time and place, with Robert Surtees’ widescreen black and white framings capturing the flat, windswept landscapes in all their desolation. While the performances – particularly Cloris Leachman, Ben Johnson and a young Jeff Bridges – are raw and heart-wrenchingly authentic.

A worthy tribute to Bogdanovich’s film heroes – Orson Welles and John Ford.

Cert: 15 Stephen Frears was at the forefront of the British cinematic revival of the mid-1980s, and the delightfully transgressive My Beautiful Laundrette is his greatest triumph of the period.

Working from a richly layered script by Hanif Kureishi, who was soon to be an internationally renowned writer, Frears tells an uncommon love story that takes place between a young South London Pakistani man (Gordon Warnecke), who decides to open an upscale laundromat to make his family proud, and his childhood friend, a skinhead (Daniel Day-Lewis in a breakthrough role) who volunteers to help make his dream a reality. This culture-clash comedy is also a subversive work of social realism that dares to address racism, homophobia and sociopolitical marginalisation in Margaret Thatcher’s England.

Georges (Jean-Louis Tringtignant) and his wife Anne (Emmanuelle) are enjoying their retirement attending concerts while quietly revelling in each other’s company. However, when Anne suffers a debilitating stroke the dynamic of their devoted relationship is thrown out of whack with devastating consequences.

Director Michael Haneke (Funny Games, The White Ribbon) clinically chronicles the inevitable disintegration of even the most loving partnership.

Set in Hong Kong, 1962, Chow Mo-wan and Su Li-zhen move into neighbouring apartments on the same day. Their relationship is formal and polite – until a discovery about their spouses creates an intimate bond between them. At once delicately mannered and visually extravagant, Wong Kar-wai’s In the Mood for Love is a masterful evocation of romantic longing and fleeting moments.

With its aching musical soundtrack and exquisitely abstract cinematography by Christopher Doyle and Mark Lee Pingbin, this film has been a major stylistic influence on cinema over the last 15 years, and is a milestone in Wong Kar-wai’s illustrious career.

Cert: 15 Neurotic comedian Alvy Singer (Woody Allen) falls for the titular heroine (Diane Keaton), a budding singer, and the two of them attempt to build a solid relationship. They face problems, however, which include their opposing feelings towards California and their own mutual paranoia. Realising their differences stand in the way of a lasting relationship, they split up.

Annie Hall embraces Allen’s central themes – his love affair with New York (and hatred of Los Angeles), how impossible relationships are, and his fear of death. But their balance is just right, the chemistry between Allen’s worrywart Alvy and Keaton’s gangly, loopy Annie is one of the screen’s best pairings.
