Out On a Limb John McMorrough Ann Arbor, Michigan Middle School

Out On a Limb uses four major logics- the big dumb box, sectional sorting, an accommodation of the classrooms, and permeating via the core - to achieve the typological goal of the middle school. The shed logic of the big dumb box gives birth to a core, one that runs through the entirety of the building, functioning both as programmatic spillage and the main circulation route. As the students wander deeper into the building, there is a sectional growth and a planar scaling in response to larger programmatic elements, which is reflected in the skylights.

Absolved Ablution Andrew Daley Manilla, Philippines Bath House/Church

Absolved Ablution unmasks the expanding socioeconomic chasm between disparate, contrasting populations of Metro Manila. In order to create a dialogue and foster a relationship between the two, an amalgam of two typologies as ancient as the discipline itself, the church and the bath house, are juxtaposed, spliced, harmonized, infused, integrated, embedded - hybridized. Through an aggregate of spatial organization, layers of thresholds, and leveraging of an atmosphere of vulnerability, amnesty is afforded to the disparate users. This is accomplished by administering levels of spatial superimposition, visual and auditory access, and paths of converging circulation between the two experiences.

ImpossiblyPossible Architecture Representation Perry Kulper

In the vein of M.C. Escher and under the guidance of Perry Kulper, the Axonometric Drawing subverts the fundamental quality of the conventional axonometric drawing - to render clear and calculable. Having no regard for position, orientation, faces, or cardinal directions, the Axonometric Drawing then is adapted into the third dimension, birthing the Axonometric Object, all while maintaining the semi-legible, quasi-fantastic, and impossibly-possible elements of Escher.

The Axonometric Object is situated in three distinct sites - thus chronicling the story of the object sequentially in both time and space. The object, firstly positioned at the Big Bang, asserting its claim not as the Creator, but as the Created. Over a millennium, the Created has become the Consecrated; deified and exalted as a result of its disposition in the Beginning. It then dwindles to its final resting place as the Commoditized - unable to escape the grasp of Industrialism, Commercialism, and Fordism

Academic Democratization Sean Vance Ann Arbor, Michigan Middle School

A middle school located in Ann Arbor, Michigan is the vessel used to help alleviate an issue that is widespread across the country: an inequality between disciplines in the K-12 educational system. Typically, “core courses are perceived to be of greater importance than any creative based ones. The architecture calls into question the validity of this misguided notion - all classrooms are similar in size, have equal ease of access along the main circulation path, and have comparable qualities of light and views out to the city.

The project takes advantage of its urban context by controlling the street side boundary at particular points and pulling back at others. This was the driving force in the shaping of the project, as seen in the study models. The shifting is echoed in both the volume and the southern facing facade.

Xiaoquan Elementary Construction II Lars Graebner Sichuan, China Precedent Analysis Collaborative Project

Xiaoquan Elementary School in Sichuan, China attempts to bring the urban landscape of the city into the complex of the school. Curiosity, exploration, and investigation by the children is rewarded within the project by all of the interesting moments that occur throughout the space. The spine, or main “street, runs north and south and splits the entire complex into two. The classrooms, reading room, and offices protrude off the spine. Along the east side, the more unique buildings are situated, such as the music school.

Common Assemblies Malcolm McCollough Chicago, Illinois Maker Space

Utilizing the typology of the Hall, this Maker Space serves a neighborhood on the rise in Logan Square, Chicago. The Hall has traditionally been a Third Place, and tends to draw like minded people that have common goals and a shared skill set. The pool of resources lays the foundation for causal learning. In order for this to thrive, the architecture needs to shift in response to the residential needs via the three scales at which it operates; the concentrated, the collective, and the encountering scale.

via both circulation and adjacencies. The section encourages curiosity and nosiness by overlapping spaces and allowing differing levels of light and sound to penetrate one another. This is all held together physically and conceptually by large concrete structures that serve as ribs, running crosswise across the project and helping to more clearly articulate the space.
