The year of the London Olympics

Be active, be creative, be part of it‌

Sports Arts & Leisure

Foreword The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games present a unique, once in a lifetime opportunity to inspire a generation to take part in sport and cultural activity as part of a healthy and positively balanced lifestyle. There will be great excitement in the run up to the Games with the Torch Relay event and it is a great honour to be welcoming the Torch to North East Lincolnshire along with an evening celebration event. During the Games people will be keen to try out new sports and cultural activities as Great Britain showcases to the world the balance of elite level performance, community involvement and embracement that our community sector supports. Following the Games it is essential that the Country unites to support the delivery of a long term legacy of sports and cultural participation that can support community health and well-being. This prospectus is a guide to North East Lincolnshire Council’s plans to deliver an Olympic legacy in 2012, the year of the Olympics, where we can all be active, be creative and be part of it.

Disability activities take place weekly in North East Lincolnshire and include adapted cycling, swimming, ice skating, trampolining, multi sports, music and arts and crafts. All weekly activities are fully inclusive and everybody is welcome to come along and have a go.

Try it out… Inclusive 4AllSport taster events take place quarterly at local leisure facilities. They offer activities including table tennis, arts and crafts, dance, new age kurling, trampolining, adapted cycling, indoor football and athletics, ice skating, swimming, wii games and access to information about healthy lifestyles. The events attract approximately 200 people including participants, carers and their families and are a great way to get involved in local activity.

New for 2012… The North East Lincolnshire Disability Games is the area’s very own Paralympic sporting event. There are lots of inclusive events and activities taking place over the summer months of 2012 replicating a number of Olympic and Paralympic sports. You can enter into our competitive events or simply come along to

8

Success story… The Kick Start Group was formed in 2007 with the help of the Community Mental Health Team in partnership with North East Lincolnshire Council’s sports development. Now known as ‘Humber Hotspurs’ the team train and compete on a weekly basis and have come a long way in the past four years. They train and play matches at Bradley Football Development Centre, which they call their ‘home ground’. They are also part of a wider network within Yorkshire and Humber where they play in league and friendly matches. Playing football as part of a team on a weekly basis has helped many of the service users get their confidence back in social settings leading to a pathway back into paid employment or volunteering opportunities.

The Active Seniors programme aims to keep the mind, body and soul youthful for our residents in North East Lincolnshire through a variety of activities and events. Weekly activities take place in local community settings consisting of a range of activities including tai chi, chair based exercise, new age kurling, light circuits, Zumba Gold and arts and craft workshops. These activities are very social, keep our community fit and active and are often referred to as ‘Over 50s Youth Clubs’. This project also carries the prestigious Inspire mark awarded through London 2012 and the Olympic Games Committee. All sessions are affordable and accessible. Participants can also join our loyalty scheme to earn free sessions for regular attendance.

Try it out… Taster events take place in the community to let you enjoy a range of activities. They take place over a full day and let you try out new and existing sports and cultural activities. These events also give us the opportunity to ask you want you want to enjoy. The taster events provide information on healthy lifestyles and give participants the opportunity to try new activities, socialise and meet new people along with light refreshments in a safe and

comfortable environment.

New for 2012… A Cultural Road Show is taking place in 2012 in library branches across North East Lincolnshire. Starting from February a variety of different sports and arts activities will be taking place and everyone is welcome. Success story… In December last year, 50 residents in North East Lincolnshire took part in our first new age kurling competition at the Memorial Hall, Cleethorpes. The event was a huge success and all teams involved had their own creative team name and enjoyed the competitive element as well as meeting up for a festive social event. All of the teams who entered take part in our weekly programme of activities and say it’s a great way to get active, stay healthy and socialise with friends. The winning team Waltham Strollers were delighted and will now get their name engraved on the trophy that will be re used at every competition.

Sport Lincs is a multi agency project that aims to provide young people with activities that they can take part in as a diversion to antisocial behaviour, youth related crime and drug and alcohol misuse. Partners include North East Lincolnshire Council’s sports and cultural development services and the young people’s support service, Humberside Police and Grimsby Town Football in the Community. The partnership, through various sources of funding, provides these diversionary activities for the young people of the borough in locations close to their homes.

Try it out… Weekly dance and football academies take place throughout the borough together with DJ’ing, filming, rock school, urban art and arts and crafts workshops. The dance and football academies culminate in quarterly Dance Off and Fairplay football events.

New for 2012… The scheme is award winning and has achieved the nationally acclaimed Inspire mark for the Friday night football sessions that operate across the whole of the borough. North East Lincolnshire Council has also just achieved the

10

nationally recognised award Street Mark, also an Inspire marked project, which will see new sessions being created around the Street Sport theme. In 2009 Sport Lincs was also awarded the highly commendable Home Office Tilly Award.

Brochure: Sports and cultural quarter and the holiday activity brochure

Success story… A youth project leader on the rock school programme speaks highly of the programme. “The rock school project has been an invaluable tool for engaging young people including those who are hard to reach and have low self esteem and low levels of participation. Through learning to play an instrument, singing, being part of a group or by going out into the community showcasing their new skills, rock school has increased their confidence and given them a new direction and focus, diverting them away from undesirable choices. One young girl, 14, was involved in some risky behaviour and was regularly seeing a social worker. She has now done three shows/concerts and rock school has changed her behaviour and attitude to life and led to her believe in herself more. Through involvement in the project she has gained a new direction and has discovered talents that she didn’t know she had. Rock school is clearly making a difference to young people’s lives.”

They will allow local people to learn more about the collection and also about the heritage of the area. Some of the workshops will be tailored to adults and some to children, so there really is something for everybody. Entrance to the exhibitions is free of charge and all of the outreach workshops are also free but pre booking is essential.

Want to volunteer?

Find out more...

Inspire is a volunteering scheme developed by North East Lincolnshire Council’s sports development for adults and young people aged 14 years or older. The programme provides opportunities for volunteers to build up hours in a sporting environment and be rewarded when target hours are reached.

Tel:

This is done by placing volunteers with local clubs or with our community sport coaches at a variety of activities including holiday activities, Sports Lincs evening activities, active seniors, disability and school sessions. Volunteers can also volunteer with local sports clubs, through their schools or with community groups. Due to the nature of volunteering, new volunteers are required to complete a free enhanced CRB disclosure and upon completion automatically become a member of the North East Lincolnshire Active Coaches Association. All coaches and volunteers’ details are securely stored on our database. They then receive up-to-date information on coach education courses, and are provided with an active coaches identity card for use at sessions. This details their identity, coaching qualifications and date of CRB. New volunteers receive an induction pack and are asked to complete an electronic log of the hours that they have volunteered. These are then signed off by the volunteer coordinator/lead coach. There is a rewards scheme which sets out targets for volunteers to work towards.
