What’s Up History Could Be Lost

During a recent discussion regarding the General Plan of Kyiv Development 2025 Council, it looks like 300 out of the 360 current monuments of architecture may well disappear. The official excuse has to do with property and its jurisdiction therein. The off-therecord reason is Ukrainian politicians are just too crooked and corrupt to put any importance on the history they will be destroying over land plots. We'll have to wait and see what happens in the coming years. But with people who see no reason as to why hotels shouldn't be erected on the sacred ground that is Babyn Yar, for example, anything is up for grabs.

Tymoshenko Could Face Charges for Murder “What the hell are you doing?” That’s a question that often pops into our heads here at the What’s On office when we read what the current administration is planning against the opposition. After all the pressure from the EU, we were bamboozled by the conviction of Yulia Tymoshenko and all the political shenanigans that followed. But as the prosecutor’s office shines light on an old case about whether or not Tymoshenko was involved in the contract killing of a lawmaker way back in 1996, we’re more confused than ever. As poor Yulia languishes in prison awaiting an appeal, Deputy Prosecutor General Renat Kuzmin announced his office was checking claims that Tymoshenko was involved in the ordering and paying for the murder of businessman Yevhen Shcherban. A spokesperson for the former prime minister said the allegations were “rubbish” and there were no limits to the lengths Yanukovych and his allies would go to silence political opponents. It is a revelation the EU must be spinning over as well. Especially since it has been pushing for Tymoshenko to be freed, saying her incarceration might scupper negotiations on the association agreement in question. So the question needs to be asked, what does Yanukovych hope to achieve? The woman is already in prison. His government voted against amendments to the criminal code that could have set her free and cleared her name. And now it looks like he may have further charges levelled against her. Of course, after the tirades about him and his party when Tymoshenko first came to power, along with threats of putting his lot in jail, one could understand his reasoning on this. But this does not affect him, it affects the country, and right now it’s not looking good. We had hoped he was playing a clever game, balancing himself neatly between the EU and Russia so the country could benefit the most from its position between the two. But it seems now those hopes were false. While we’ve been of the opinion the jailing of Tymoshenko might not affect EU-Ukraine relations so much, the EU can do nothing but react negatively to the further hounding of Tymoshenko. It seems now Yanukovych wishes to force Europe’s hand into denying Ukraine’s ascension hopes so he can move the country into Russia’s fold, all the while telling the people it wasn’t his fault. Or maybe he’s just too gutless to stand up to Putin. No one knows. One thing is certain, however, the path he is on is one that leads away from Europe, and we all know what lies in the other direction. The people of this country don’t want that.

Heavyweight Hits High

Ukraine is famous for many things: its vodka, its beautiful women and its boxers (not the underpants, the people). One of the most well-known, Vitaliy Klitchko, was recently seen giving an interview on the Ukrainian channel TVi saying he would soon be retiring from the hard-hitting sport to return to a position in politics. The 40-year old ran for the position of mayor in 2006, coming in second behind Leonid Chernovetsky. If we look at 2008, the same again. Heading up the Ukrainian Democratic Alliance for Reforms party, or the rather punchy UDAR (which just happens to be ‘punch’ in Russian), it has seen increased activity in the ratings as of late. Another sign that leads one to believe Klitchko may be hanging up his gloves for a spot in the political ring was a visit to the US just last month. Speaking with a couple of Russia’s fiercest critics, Republican senator John McCain and Democrat Benjamin Cardin, it became clear (if it wasn’t already) that Klitchko is in total opposition to the Ukrainian government in power at the moment. Whether this corroborates the rumours that we may indeed see the boxer's name on ballots in the next election no one can say. All we can hope for is that Vitaliy Klitchko does indeed give the current administration a good punch: actual or otherwise.

The King of Crocodile Rock

Elton John (UK, pop), Palace Sport (Sportyvna Pl 1)

8 November at 19.00

Elton has a special relationship with Ukraine, not only where music is concerned but also with regards to a very special little boy he had at one time wanted to adopt. While sorry might just be the hardest word, no one here is sorry he’ll be here this November, where all of his best songs will be part of the show. Tickets are 600 – 7900hrv. American and Greek bassists Antony Jackson and Yiorgos Fakanas will be in Ukraine this autumn to show off sounds produced by their nimble, Grammynominated fingers. Playing for over 40 years, Jackson has been part of more than 3,000 recording sessions which were then transformed into over 500 albums. Releasing his first leader project with Yiorgos Fakanas, Interspirit (the name of the project) is something quite different for Jackson. It is, however, fusion funk at its best. The Mystery of Art

Art studio for children, Bottega Gallery, Mykhalivska 22b

5 & 8 November (every Tuesday/ Saturday)

The Bottega Gallery has opened a children’s studio of art history which offers courses for children 6-13 years old. Studying art at school is usually sporadic and superficial. Here, however, your kids will gain valuable lessons in theory as well as practical experience. While they may not become the next Picasso or van Gough, they will get a good grasp of painting, modeling and appliqué technique. This is a great age for children to pick up new information. The Ancient Arts

Grand Chinese Circus II, October Palace (Instytutska 1)

24 December – 2 January

A Woman and a Man

Michel Legrand (France) w/ National Symphony Orchestra, Palace Ukraine (V Vasylkivska 103)

23 December at 19.00

Michel Legrand is a legendary French pianist and composer who became an even bigger name once he started writing scores for Hollywood. With more than 200 movies that have been touched by his musical hand, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Thomas Crown Affair and Wuthering Heights are but just a few. Having worked with eminent musicians such as Edith Piaf, Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra and Barbara Streisand, he’s won five Grammys and three Oscars. This upcoming concert, A Woman and a Man, is a selection of Legrand’s most famous and romantic tunes, and is your opportunity to immerse yourself in French charm. Tickets are 150 – 1750hrv. For more information call 247-2316

While the original idea behind the circus originated in ancient Rome as a place to showcase the stunts of horses and equestrians, it has evolved into a wide variety of feats and exploits meant to shock and amaze. Blessed with a week of the Grand Chinese Circus, their’s is a combination of ancient Chinese folk games and arts, perfected throughout the ages. Acrobats move as if completely made of rubber while men spin numerous plates atop tall sticks. Through it all, the brilliant costumes only add to the atmosphere of a fairytale coming to life. Tickets are 50 – 150hrv. For more information call 279-1582.

The Man Behind the Soundtrack

Eric Serra (France, pop, instrumental), October Palace (Instytutska 1)

7 December at 19.00

Working in a very specific genre of music, Eric Serra has been a composer in demand for numerous years. Writing music not for pop stars but for films, you can find his work on movies such as Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element, Nikita, Leon and James Bond: Golden Eye, to name but a few. Playing together with his band RXRA tonight, there will be little in the way of music you don’t recognise – we guarantee it! Tickets are 150 – 500hrv. For more information call 279-1582.

The Best of Belinda

25 Years In Orbit

19 December at 19.00

20 November at 19.00

Belinda Carlisle (US, pop), Palace Ukraine (V Vasylkivska 103) Belinda Carlisle began her career in the late 80s as the lead singer of one of America’s most popular allgirls bands, the Go-Go’s. Going on to a solo career in 1985 and spanning over 25 years, the girls have been on again off again allowing Belinda to do her thing. Her most recent release was an album called Voila in 2007. However, there was talk at one time of a new solo album from the former Go-Go herself. While that is highly unlikely before her appearance here in Kyiv, hits such as Circle In The Sand, Heaven Is A Place On Earth, La Luna, and California are still sure to please. Tickets are 200 – 1250hrv. For more information call 247−2444.

Vopli Vidoplyasova (pop-rock, folk), Palace Sport (Sportyvna Pl 1)  Appearing on Ukraine’s music scene 25 years ago (when, to be honest, there was little more than pop and

folk available), Vopli Vidoplyasova introduced a new genre to the country – rock. Turning out 13 CDs and DVDs over the course of their career, there just isn’t enough time to pack everything into this next three-hour show. To that end, VV has chosen

Take Me Out!

A Healthy Mantra Food has the ability to transform even the most downbeat disposition. As the old saying goes, give a starving man a fish and he’ll be ecstatic! Until tomorrow when he’s once again starving (or something to that effect). Locating one such starving man and one starving woman, it’s an old proverb we’re going to put into practice.

esses who take our coats and then take us to our table by the window. The setting is this: there are booth-type tables along the left wall; comfortable chairs and divans situated around lower tables make up the middle; and couches corner tables to the right. The bar at the back is constantly changing colour, displaying Hindu-style designs that dot a mirrored wall and liquor bottles in a retro 70s smoke room kind of way. It’s dark, but there is rockstar lighting that illuminates the area well enough to see that you are not stealing your neighbour’s drink. And another thing: it’s not is packed. There are, however, a few tables that are occupied, and I can hear English at one, Arabic at another, as well as the traditional Ukrainian and Russian. It is ever-so-slightly Beverly Hills meets Bollywood, and could be considered intimidating depending on your level of self confidence. Anyone acquainted with my dining partner this evening, however, will know that’s not the case here. As we get comfortable, two menus are placed on the table. One is a general list of cocktails, which, upon closer inspection, is a tremendous list of worldly concoctions. Opting for a Martini Bianco myself, I could see this being a super pre-party watering hole, especially for the young and upwardly mobile. And with most drinks hovering around 65-85hrv, it’s reasonable too.

The Mantra Market

W

e have had an onslaught of visitors from far off lands as of late and weekends have been spent in the company of good food, great people and loads of fun. With a short lull in the influx, we find ourselves alone for a few days. It’s different. It’s nice. It’s a good reason to visit Mantra: where I’m hoping they will be able to create a little glow in my psyche as well as my growling stomach.

With drinks ordered, and our attention turns to the food. Upon first impression, it looks as though the chef here has carte blanch. There are few options on this menu that you’ll find in other restaurants. Caesar Salad? Nope. Borscht? Forget it. Sushi? Well, okay, yes, there is sushi. But it goes very well with the rest of the Asian/Indian/Thai theme they’ve got on the go here. In fact, there’s a roll in here called the Canadian, and at 120hrv, I have to admit curiosity. For the sake of this review, and the large percentage of our readers who I know don’t ‘do’ sushi, I’ll come back another time and give it my own review.

Hindu-inspired

This club/restaurant has been around for a while, it’s true. It is, however, new to us. Walking hand in hand in the direction of the massive complex that is Arena, the weather and our hunger keep us moving at a quick clip. Upon arrival, the removal of an outdoor café/concert ring is taking place in the inner courtyard. We watch them for a moment, but the breeze bites at our cheeks. So we make our way up the curved steps to the first balcony where lounge music is pumping from the speakers and what looks to be naked women make our acquaintance. Okay, so they are cutouts which have been spray-painted on the walls. Nonetheless, they are very revealing, and I can’t help but smile at how very Ukraine it all is. Upon entering the actual venue, we find no naked women; cutouts or otherwise. What we do come across, however, are a few polite host-

BRUNELLO BAR Evening socials have come to be a pretty successful way of doing business outside the traditional business arena, which is something the BUCC has picked up on. Getting its members together on 26 October for a few drinks, some good eats, and the opportunity to potentially make a few new contacts, the range of conversational topics this evening were long and wide. With the business card lottery always a favourite part of the evening, all eyes and ears were on head of British Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce, Bate Toms.

On the Sofa with...

Ukraine’s Most Famous Paul

I

t’s the mid-90s and the nation’s stations are only just beginning to ripple. Taken on board as a student of language and psychology, DJ Pasha set sail upon Ukrainian radio waves, becoming a permanent guest in apartments all over the country.

Nothing Accidental

It was an interesting turn of events for a psychologist, and one that had little to do with the Russian lessons he was offering to foreigners at the time. “Everything happens by accident,” admits Pavlo Shylko, “and yet there is also regularity in everything that happens.”

40.indb 34

Pavlo to his mother, and Pavlick to his friends, he is Pasha to the rest of us and loved by all.

While the lessons he was giving were filling his pocketbook, they did little to fulfil him as a person. So taking a chance on one of the few FM radio stations appearing at the time, he threw together a resume and soon found himself in front of a live mic. What he soon learned was that being a radio host was not just about being able to recite the names of songs next on the play list. It required good language skills – something his Ukrainian, Russian, English, French, Polish and Spanish would certainly have helped with – but, much more importantly, it demanded a witty sense of humour. “To be a good DJ, of course you need to have a good working knowledge of music, but you also need to understand what the audience wants. It’s hard to explain anything more beyond that. You don’t create the track list: there are editors to do that. What you do have to know is how to present the music, so that people are in the right mood for whatever you’re going to give them.”

By Hook or By Crook

While it may sound simple enough, Pasha says it’s not always the easiest thing to do. His background in psychology, however, helped him a lot; especially when he had to cope with things beyond his control. “Not only do you have to entertain the public, you have to handle anything that might happen unexpectedly, and all of this during a live broadcast! I remember when I first started it would get very hot in the studio, and our equipment would constantly break down. We had to make use of different linguistic twists and turns to make sure the audience was entertained and didn’t turn us off!” Putting his intelligent wit to work only increased his reputation, and happy to finally meet the face that went with the familiar voice, DJ Pasha quickly became a popular host for events that had little to do with radio. Today, Pasha says there are many things he’s into: “There are concerts, books, TV projects... The Beatles and Michael Jackson tributes both went so smoothly over the last couple of years we are now putting the final touches on the same sort of thing for Queen. I hope we get a good turnout.” Working as a disc jockey, event organiser and host, and now President of the same radio station that gave him his first job – Gala Media, Pasha has gained more than just a working knowledge of music and all it entails. As a bit of an expert in the entertainment industry, he says, “Ukrainian music targets the quality of that in Europe, and is evolving. But the system as it exists now requires a lot of work. The best song the world has ever heard may have already been written, but we don’t know about it because it’s not been promoted properly. Like a bone that’s been set incorrectly, we need to break the system to be able to improve it.” It’s an interesting point of view, and one that is probably not far off considering it comes from a man who spends 90% of his waking hours at work. Lamenting the little time he does get to spend with his family, he recalls a line from Oleksandr Pushkin’s Eugen Onegin: “We all have had a fitful schooling. By hook or crook, in this and that.”
