Goodbye July, hello August! The end-ofsummer month of August means a lot of families will soon be getting ready for ‘back to school’ (some celebrating more than others.) But as I always tell our kids when they come home from school, Pop-Pop can’t miss you until you’re gone.

South Florida is in the height of our turtle mating season, and that means there are lots of turtles searching for romance in new lakes and canals. Unfortunately, many of these guys have to cross busy roads, which doesn’t end well for them.
Aside from being hit by cars, turtles also can’t crawl over raised street curbs. And unless someone quickly helps them, turtles only have about ten minutes before they succumb to the scorching summer pavement heat. So, if you see a turtle in the street, please pull over quickly and help them get to safety on the other side. And remember to always move them in the direction they were heading or they’ll just try to cross the road again later.

In jewelry, the Big Four precious stones are diamonds, emeralds, rubies, and sapphires. For a long time, these gemstones were the most desirable in the world, but now, spinel gemstones are all the rage and lab-grown gems may give organic stones a run for their money.
Spinels look similar to rubies and were commonly misidentified as precious stones until the 18th century. In modern times, spinels started to gain attention when the Bonhams auction house sold the 50 carat Hope Spinel for a whopping $1.2 million. Still, similar sized diamonds can catch $9.5 million.
With household budgets already constrained by recordhigh inflation, many shoppers have been ditching the big four gemstones in favor of cheaper alternatives. Further, some shoppers view spinels as less ethically complex. Demand for gemstones has fueled violence in Africa and elsewhere, and big players in the jewelry industry have become intertwined in contentious conflicts. Meanwhile, spinels and many other gemstones have generally been less ethically contentious.
Spinels aren't the only gemstones challenging the dominance of the Big Four. Lab-grown diamonds have exploded in popularity. In 2016, less than a billion dollars of lab-grown diamonds were sold. Last year, consumers spent more than $12 billion on lab-grown diamonds. In response, De Beers, the world's biggest player in the natural diamond market, has had to aggressively slash prices, sometimes by as much as 40 percent, according to Forbes.

decades, physicians and organizations like the American Heart Association encouraged older adults to take one low-dose aspirin each day to prevent blood clots and cardiovascular complications such as heart attacks or strokes. But that guidance has changed in recent years, due to new research that shows that the risks of daily aspirin may outweigh the benefits. But according to the New York Times, as many as 18.5 million older adults still take a daily aspirin, which increases their risk for dangerous gastrointestinal bleeding and other complications.
Last year, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force issued new guidelines that advised against daily aspirin for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease in people 60 and older. In their recommendations, the panel noted that daily aspirin offered only modest risk reduction for people between the ages of 40 and 60 who aren't at increased risk of bleeding. And for people over the age of 60, daily aspirin provided "no net benefit," and increased bleeding risks.
The best way to prevent cardiovascular disease is to control blood pressure and cholesterol, said Dr. Boback Ziaeian, assistant professor of cardiology at UCLA's School of Medicine. Abstaining from tobacco, getting regular exercise, and controlling blood sugar levels are also important.
Not everyone should chuck the aspirin in the trash, though. For people with existing cardiovascular disease, aspirin (when recommended by a physician) remains an important tool to prevent future heart attacks and strokes.

Thomas Edison may well be the most famous inventor of all time. Edison invented, or played a role in inventing, many of the technologies that now define human civilization, including light bulbs, batteries, and motion pictures. But did you know that Edison also invented the modern job interview?
Edison wasn't a solitary mad genius who toiled away in some secret laboratory. Indeed, he employed more than 10,000 people spread across dozens of companies. Given the complexity of his work and the nature of his cutting-edge technologies, Edison had to find the right people for complex roles. To do that, he put together extensive questionnaires, so-called Edison Tests.
Today, job interviews often involve questions that fall outside the narrow confines of a job position. Edison was one of the first people to integrate more holistic considerations into his interviews. For example, he might serve a candidate soup and see if they salted it before trying it. If the person did so, it suggested that they were quick to jump to conclusions, making them a bad fit for work as researchers.
Back then, many employers paid scant attention to personality fits for given jobs. The written Edison Test contained 140 questions and prospective employees had to score 90 percent or higher to pass. When the test was administered in 1921 to 718 people, only 32 people passed (about 2 percent). Even Albert Einstein failed the test at one point.

One invention alone is responsible for the modern city full of skyscrapers that twinkle in the night sky: the elevator. Before the elevator, buildings could be no higher than the number of stairs that people were willing to climb. It turns out that in the 1800s, that height was about six stories.
Enter the elevator. In the 1830s and 1840s, platform elevators helped lift freight, but they had a scary reputation. The lifting cables regularly broke and sent the car (and its contents) plummeting to the ground. People weren't eager to be on such a lift when the inevitable happened.
Things changed in 1854 when the American engineer Elisha Graves Otis devised an ingenious safety brake. He attached a strong-bow-shaped spring to the top of the platform, and when the platform cable was pulled up, the spring arched and slid smoothly along the elevator guide rails. Otis showed that when he cut the lift cable, the spring simply flexed back and its ends jammed inside guard rail notches, halting the elevator's fall.
Today, with some modifications, elevators use the same safety system that Otis invented and demonstrated in 1854. Otis Worldwide is 171 years old and still installs elevators across the globe, including in the 88-story Petronas Twin Towers in Malaysia, the original World Trade Center in New York City, and the Eiffel Tower in Paris

We may be future colonists of Mars but with the way we talk, you would think it's still the 18th century. Sailing ships were the cutting-edge technology of the 18th century, and the shipbuilding boom spawned many phrases that we still use today.

Loose cannon: Today, an unpredictable person. Then, a literal unsecured big iron tube that was going to hit something and cause a lot of pain.
Batten down the hatches: Today, get ready for trouble. Then, literally get an iron bar to cover the door of a ship for terrible weather.
All hands on deck: Today, There's a problem and we need everyone here now. Then -- same, except an actual ship's deck.
Hours: Mon. - Sat. 9am to 7pm ~ Sun. 10am - 5pm
Show one's true colors: Today, a dishonest person who reveals who they really are. Then, a ship flying a fake flag to confuse enemies. Pretty much the same.
Learn the ropes: Today, learn the rules and skills of a job. Then, literally learn how to tie and use ropes. This was important to keep a tight ship -- which currently means a strictly managed organization, but back then might mean the difference between a ship that had been properly sealed for leaks and sinking in the ocean.

Barn Doors. The farmhouse design style used to be all the rage, from shiplap walls and neutral colors to rustic pieces of furniture. And sliding barn doors were a defining element of this interior design style. But today, it's become an outdated trend. Instead, look for sliding doors that are a more classic style.
Accent walls. This one may surprise you, but a lot of interior designers are over the accent wall trend. There's nothing wrong with adding color to your walls, but if you're choosing a color- commit to it and paint all the walls in the room rather than just one.
Wallpaper. The same goes for wallpaper on one wall. Just like an accent wall, wallpaper on one wall is an outdated trend. It often looks out of place and unfinished, so if you're planning to use wallpaper, cover each wall in the room for a seamless, uniform style.
Carpet in bathrooms. Carpets and bathrooms don't mix. There's nothing wrong with having a few bath mats in your bathroom but having carpet there just doesn't make sense. Style and function are important, and this design fad offers neither.
Choosing just one style. Farmhouse, coastal, and Scandinavian are all beautiful interior design styles for homes. While you may love a particular design style more than others, it's important to choose just one style for your entire home.

Grand slam tennis played at Wimbledon is on the pristine grass. The French Open is two weeks of grueling tennis on the red clay. The U.S. Open is in the heart of New York. Need I say more?
First of all, Delray Beach resident Co Co Gauff will be there to defend her U.S. Open title from last year. So will her rival, Iga Swaitek, the top ranked female player who hails from Poland. On the men’s side, the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz will look to take home his second U.S. Open title. He won it in 2022 as a teenager. Grauff won her U.S. Open title as a teenager as well. But the player with the most Grand Slams (24), Novak Djokovic, will be looking for number 25.
With Rhode Island beginnings, the U.S. Open is played in Queens. Some of the great past champions include Rod Laver, Jimmy Connors and Venus Williams, to name a few. In 2006, the tennis complex was renamed the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center for the champion’s fierce devotion to sports equality and social activism. Thanks to Billie Jean King, the prize money for both men’s and women’s title winners will be equal: a cool 3 million, each.
The tennis matchups should be riveting. The main draw is scheduled for August 26 – September 8. ESPN will showcase the coverage. For further info on the tournament, visit www.usopen.org.

We learn a whopping 80% of what we know through our vision. So, if we want our children to have a successful future, their vision is ultra-important. Back to school is the perfect time for parents to focus on their children’s eyes. Here are some tips and suggestions to make sure your children have clear and healthy eyes for a lifetime:
• Frequent breaks when using digital devices. For kids under 6, limit screen time to 2 hours per day.
• Keep a safe distance from all screens.
• Sunglasses or Transition lenses for outdoor activities.
• Wear protective eyewear for all sports.
• Practice good hygiene since kids touch their eyes frequently.
• Do not rely on the basic vision screening at school. It’s very rudimentary.
• A healthy balanced diet is crucial—Limit fast food.
• If your child is complaining of eye strain, they may have convergence issues. Have a comprehensive eye exam by an eye doctor before the start of school.

One of my favorite parts about summer is going to New York. I’ve been flying up to New York to visit my family every summer for as long as I can remember. My family lives on Long Island, and it feels like a second home to me. While I stay on Long Island most of the time, I typically go to the city at least once.
This summer I had the pleasure of going to the city with both my best friend and my cousin. As teenagers, it's fun to go to the city and feel a sense of independence by taking the Long Island Railroad and navigating the subway.
On this trip to NYC, we first visited Times Square and went to the M&M store, Disney Store and Sephora. We then headed to the Empire State Building, stopping to shop in stores along the way. We didn’t end up going to the top of the Empire State Building but went in the gift shop of the Harry Potter Exhibition below.
My favorite part of the city is Soho, the best place to shop. I can’t leave the city without stopping in stores such as Brandy Melville, Garage, and Edikted. The last thing we did to close off an amazing day was taking the Staten Island Ferry. We took the ferry from Manhattan to Staten Island and got amazing views of the Manhattan skyline, the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty. New York City is truly a unique place!

For most of us, car shopping is as inevitable (and sometimes as unenjoyable) as death and taxes, especially after years of skyrocketing prices. According to the Private Enterprise Research Center, new car prices increased about 12 percent between 2020 and 2024, and used car prices shot up by an eye-watering 37.2 percent. But with inventory inching back up toward pre-pandemic levels, car dealerships are more motivated to sell, and car buyers might regain the upper hand -- if they're patient.
According to Money magazine, the average new car price is about $48,400, down from its peak of $50,000 in late 2022. Even after the slight decline, overall car prices remain about 20 percent higher than 2020 levels. Auto loans are more expensive too, and the Federal Reserve is in no rush to ease interest rates due to ongoing inflation concerns.
Automakers and dealers may offer attractive incentives to entice buyers into driving home with a new car today, but Kelley Blue Book advises consumers to keep their wallets closed until October (or later). Car prices will likely start falling, and a predicted interest rate cut later in the year will further reduce costs for the majority of car buyers who finance their purchases.
But if you're hoping to find a brand-new car at a more affordable price, you'll have to wait much longer. Automakers are producing about 80 percent fewer ‘inexpensive vehicles’ with lower margins than they did just four years ago. Dealers are clamoring for more budget-friendly cars, but those changes will take time.

Wally Byam was a country boy from Oregon, but by the 1920s, the Stanford grad was working in the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles. He yearned to spend the weekend camping rough in the great outdoors. But his wife did not. Eager for a compromise, Byam built an elevated platform with a tent on top of the chassis of a Ford Model T and hooked it to their car. The curious contraption was an arrangement his wife could accept.
For the next iteration, Byam built a more comfortable plywood trailer shaped like a teardrop that had a cookstove. When they hooked it to their Dodge, they attracted a lot of attention, according to Smithsonian magazine. He didn't know it then, but he had officially invented the road trip.
By 1931, Byam had founded a company to build his "Airstream" trailers, so named because they rode as smoothly as a stream of air. In 1936, Airstream switched from plywood to aluminum, which was lightweight, resistant to corrosion, and offered a trademark sleek look. Airplanes then flew at the bleeding edge of technology, and the Airstream was billed as a plane without wings. More features, including working toilets, were added over the years.
Along the way, the company also launched some duds, like the Airstream funeral coach, which was intended to replace the hearse and to allow families to ride with the deceased to their final resting place. Mourners balked and the funeral coach went to an early grave. Today, Airstream is located in Ohio, and is one of America’s most iconic brands.
