It’s been fun... Happy summer, Neighbors! I cannot believe how quickly the school year went! It seems not long ago that I was starting my senior year, and settling into my new position as the COAST Program Specialist. I’d like to thank everyone for an awesome two and a half years—being a COAST Leader, and COAST Program Specialist has been such a great learning experience and I’ve met so many great people. Although, I am saddened to be leaving COAST at the end of the summer, I am excited to pursue a career in photography, here in Milwaukee. I wish the new COAST Graduate Assistant and COAST Leaders the best of luck! Thanks again for a great run! McKenna Shaffer COAST Program Specialist

C O A S T Newsletter Milwaukee Summer Favorites From the NHO Staff

What is your favorite thing about the UWM area and neighborhoods? Alex: My favorite thing about the UWM area and neighborhoods is the social and cultural diversity. I think diversity is good because it encourages creativity around the UWM area. Anahit: The diversity of UWM and the community is my favorite thing about the area. This is a quality that is unique to Milwaukee, and it makes the city stand out from the rest of the state and many other areas. Eelisa: My favorite thing about the UWM area and neighborhood are the banks of the Milwaukee River. There is a vibrant culture of wildlife and the calming flow of the city’s only major river. Jes: My favorite thing about our area is the how each neighborhood has its own flavor and personality. All the different people living here give our community an interesting and unique quality. McKenna: I love the Eastside because there’s lots of great outdoor space, like trails, parks, and beaches. You can also walk or bike anywhere you need to go. Sarah: I love the diversity of people and things to do within the many neighborhoods that surround UWMilwaukee. Steve: My favorite thing about the UWM neighborhood is all the different eating options. I enjoy exploring new foods. Viririana: I like going for a bike ride from campus to the beach. The neighborhoods on the Eastside are very nice and relaxing.

C O A S T Newsletter What is your favorite local restaurant? Alex: My favorite local restaurant is Mo’s Irish Pub. They have a killer Buffalo Chicken Wrap. Anahit: My favorite restaurant is Izumis. They serve the best sushi. I recommend the Malibu Fiesta roll, which is my favorite. Rochambo is my favorite coffee shop to listen to music, study, or catch up with friends. Eelisa: My favorite local restaurant is Beans and Barley on North and Oakland. Beans and Barley uses the healthiest ingredients for every dish they serve, so I can relax and order anything on their menu, while knowing the food is prepared with health and vitality in mind. Jes: My favorite local restaurant in Milwaukee is Libiamo’s. It has a great menu and atmosphere, plus the Italian flair reminds me of my heritage. McKenna: My go-to restaurant is BelAir Cantina. They have a great patio on the river and the food and staff are awesome. Their salsas never disappoint! Sarah: Conejitos; they have the best Mexican food in the city! Steve: My favorite local restaurant is Lisa’s Pizza on Oakland. They have the best thin crust pizza. Viririana: EE-Sane Thai Cuisine-- If you can handle spicy food and are up for a challenge, try spicy level 8! Prepare to sweat and maybe shed a tear. It is amazing!

What is Milwaukee’s best “hidden gem”? Alex: Milwaukee’s best hidden gem is Bradford Beach. People have taken it for granted in the past but now as I work there I see its full potential. It’s a place to relax, a place to exercise, a place to socialize, and a place to eat and drink. Anahit: I am a big fan of Radio Milwaukee- 88.9, they have great music that reflects the city of Milwaukee, and it is listener supported. My favorite program is “Rhythm Lab” that airs Friday nights with DJ Tarik. Eelisa: Milwaukee’s best hidden gem is the maze of bike paths that run along the river and throughout public parks. These trails allow bikers to explore Milwaukee from a different, hidden perspective. Jes: There are far too many to count...but this in itself is a great quality. McKenna: The Holton Viaduct Marsupial Bridge is Milwaukee’s best hidden gem. It connects Brady St. with the Brewer’s Hill neighborhood and is amazing at night! Sarah: The breakwater by the Milwaukee Art Museum has fantastic views! Steve: Atwater Park in Shorewood is Milwaukee’s best hidden gem. It has a great beach and is never too crowded. Viririana: Many students on the Eastside don’t know about Jazz in the Park on Thursday nights! Great time to just get out and enjoy live, free music with friends, and maybe bust a few moves!
