How a Data Logger is Used in Railways A Data Logger or Data Recorder is a compact, battery-powered device equipped with an internal microprocessor, data storage, and one or more sensors, or sensor ports. They can be deployed in a variety of environments to record measurements at set intervals for up to years at a time, unattended. It can be a single-unit, stand-alone device that fits in the palm of a hand, or it can be a multi-channel data collection instrument equipped with one or more external sensors.

In the Indian Railways, Data Logger are being used to streamline the railway signaling system. The North Central Railways has installed data loggers that are being used to keep track of various aspects relating to signaling and record events at all stations between different railway routes.

A Data logger in Railways is a micro-processor based system which monitors and records all activities and events in the signaling system of a railway station/yard in the chronological order. The data collected forms the basis for maintenance. The entire installation consists of data logger equipment, software for fault analysis and a central monitoring unit.

The system has the capability of statistical analysis, prediction of the faults and generate failure reports. It allows user to define fault logics taking digital/analog inputs into consideration and generate reports for such faults. It has the capability of working in conjunction with conventional relay interlocking, multi-aspect color light signaling installations operated by lever frames/slides and electronic interlocking systems. It also has the facility to log data received from electronic interlocking through a serial port.

Use of Data Loggers in Railways has greatly improved the punctuality of the trains.

This has facilitated to improve the timings of the trains and provide information to the customers of railways that is more current, reliable and accurate, with minimal human intervention.
