Communities across the province are receiving financial support to help maintain and secure their health-care facilities; Neepawa is not one of them.

On Monday, Feb. 26, the Manitoba government announced that it had approved more than 120 projects to receive funding totalling

nearly $30 million. These specific projects were selected due to the safety and security needs of the facilities.

In total, there were 44 projects estimated to cost more than $150,000 each for a total of $21.8 million. An additional $6.8 million will address 80 projects estimated to cost less than $150,000. The remaining $1.4 million will be held in reserve in case of any emergent needs.

Three regional facilities received more than

$150,000 in support; the Minnedosa Health Centre (Boiler replacement),Third Crossing Manor in Gladstone (Sprinkler system installation) and Gladstone Health Centre (Sprinkler system installation).

The Gladstone Health Centre received a second financial grant for less than $150,000, that will go towards phase two of a roof replacement.

Auto accident in downtown Neepawa

A three vehicle incident in front of the Red Apple store in downtown Neepawa took place on the morning of Feb. 26. Sgt. Mark Morehouse of Spruce Plains RCMP said, “A driver of a Ford truck allegedly had a seizure when driving north on Mountain Ave.” The truck swerved to the right and struck two parked unoccupied cars and a light standard. The driver was taken to Neepawa hospital where he was treated and released.

Five-year-old Violily Jeffrey began highland dancing only one year ago under the direction of Shona McHarg in Brandon. To date, she has participated in various performances in Western Manitoba, taken part in Scottish Dance Teachers Alliance (SDTA) annual medal testing examinations and competed in competitions.

Violily's favorite aspect of Highland dancing is making friends. Her favorite dance movement is High Cuts.

Violily's teacher, Shona, is proud of her student's progress. Shona notes that Violily always tries her best at dance class, displays a positive learning attitude and encourages her peers/ competitors. Violily's parents, Clinton and Joy, make the dedicated weekly journey to Brandon for Violily to participate in this art form.

In medal testing exams, Violily received great praise from the examiner. She is looking forward to taking further exams in March. Regarding

competition, Violily only began competing in Oct. 2017. After her first competition, Violily understood the importance of practice and made the commitment to do so. It paid off at her most recent competition in Winnipeg. Violily was thrilled to place second in Pas de Basques and High Cuts in the Primary 4/5 category earning her a silver medal. The competition had approximately 130 dancers with age categories ranging from 4/5 years to 19+ years.

Violily is hoping to attend the ScotDance Canada Championship Series (SDCCS), popularly known as "Canadians", in Calgary this upcoming July. She will be competing in the Primary 4/5 category on two days of competition. Before then, Violily will attend other competitions in the Prairie provinces.

Canada Post lowers service one more time

C

anada’s newspaper industry and rural Canada has had a strained relationship with Canada Post for several decades. Canada Post has been involved in a self-inflicted downward spiral for a long time. They slipped a notch lower this month.

Canada Post is reducing its services yet again to rural Canada.

They have reduced the number of truck deliveries in and out of rural post offices and have drastically changed their schedules. Many post offices will get fewer deliveries and pick ups and while the reduced schedule is one factor, the change in schedule is disruptive to say the least. This paper delivers a large number of copies through the post office. At the local level, we get very good service. At the regional and national level, not so much. We have become used to having to change up all our delivery efforts when the union and Canada Post go through their frequent strike and lock-out actions. That in itself is annoying enough.

But this month at Rivers, and only this week at Neepawa, did we get notice that the delivery schedule is being changed so drastically that our Friday papers would not get to their destination on Fridays. They would be hung up in the post office Brandon warehouse until Monday. That is simply unacceptable and I told the very nice person at Brandon regional office that this was unacceptable. She took that concern up the food chain only to be told that there was nothing that could be done. In other words, Canada Post decided to reduce services and not contact anyone about it.

The two Waddell family owned newspapers make up one of Canada Post’s largest customers in south-western Manitoba but we didn’t so much as get a phone call from regional office. Nice! neepawa

RIGHT IN THE CENTRE

Ken Waddell A weekly newspaper simply can’t be held in storage for three days. It’s ridiculous, so we had to, on one day’s notice, change how we do things. Going forward, our ad deadlines will be hard and fast. There will be almost no room to adjust our deadlines because we have to get our paper to the printer several hours earlier than in the past. We now have to have our delivery person drive in the dark, at least in the winter months, to pick up the paper. In some cases, we have to ask our staff to work an evening shift to get the papers ready for Canada Post. It is disruptive, costly and to say the least, annoying. Our staff and our printer have all said, they will do what has to be done to meet the new schedule and I thank them for that.

But Canada Post doesn’t care.

They are cutting service and cutting costs and at the regional and national level, they simply don’t care. They also don’t understand business or customers or service.

Canada Post has been in decline for decades. They have a monopoly on first class mail. A stamp is a stamp is a stamp in every town in Canada. In return for the monopoly, Canada Post is supposed to provide mail delivery services to everyone. For some reason, CP clings to some door-to-door rural route mail delivery and that doesn’t make sense. City door-todoor delivery doesn’t make sense either unless there were an extra charge. Post office and group boxes are what most people get

so why is there any door-to-door without an extra fee?

But making sense is not a common trait at Canada Post. Back in the day, about 30 years ago, when fax machines came in, Canada Post rejected that technology.

They wouldn’t allow their staff to have a fax machine. They made staff come to our newspaper office to send or receive a fax. Why didn’t CP put in coin-operated fax machines? They could have been making a few extra dollars on faxing services.

Canada Post has also rejected the union appeals to provide more services. CP has buildings, staff, trucks and access to every person in Canada. Why can’t they open their eyes and seek out more services to offer the public.

Canada Post kicked us in the butt this week and I am very annoyed with them (again). Trust me, if we had a way of delivering papers that didn’t involve Canada Post, we would grab it. But Canada Post has the monopoly and for many locations we, as a newspaper, have no alternative.

As a newspaper, we extend our sincere thanks to the local Canada Post staff for all they do for us.

They get it. Customer service is important and the local Canada Post people treat us very well. It is partly because they are just nice people but they also appreciate that one of the biggest cheques that comes in their door every week has my signature on it. Locally, they care. At the higher levels, Canada Post doesn’t seem to.

hat do a tractor and Microsoft Word have in common? A lot, if equipment manufacturers get their way.

For close to a decade, automobile manufacturers have been governed by Right to Repair legislation. In Canada, this voluntary agreement came into effect in 2009 and requires manufacturers to make key software and training available to independent garages, which allows someone other than the dealership to access a vehicle’s software in order to diagnose and MY repair problems. PERSPECTIVE Given the increasing level of computer control on modern vehicles, Kate such access is required for almost Jackman-Atkinson all repairs. Automobile owners can also take it one step further, all vehicles must use the same data port, meaning owners can purchase inexpensive scanners to do their own diagnostics.

Similar legislation doesn’t exist for farm equipment, which means that for most newer equipment, farmers are beholden to the dealerships for service and repair. Manufacturers have been able to do this by making use of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which was passed into law in the US in 1998 and aimed to stop digital piracy of music, movies and software. John Deere and automaker GM have been at the forefront of the argument that modern ownership of their machines bears little resemblance to what we have traditionally considered ownership to be. In 2014, John Deere, in a submission to the US Copyright Office, argued that those who purchase their equipment don’t in fact own it, but have an “implied license for the life of the vehicle to operate the vehicle.”

That’s right, you didn’t buy your tractor, you bought the right to use it.

By making it an issue of copyright infringement, manufacturers prevent anyone but the dealership from accessing the equipment’s software. In their submission, Deere argued that allowing access “would make it possible for pirates, third-party software developers and less innovative competitors to free-ride.” They go on to say that circumventing the technological protection measurers, such as passwords and encryption that restrict access to the equipment’s computer system, would “stifle creativity and innovation for vehicle software”. They argue that the real beneficiaries of opening their software wouldn’t be individual owners who want to tinker or repair their vehicles, but third-party software developers and competing manufacturers.

Farmers are an independent bunch and this move has not been without opposition. Since 2016, Nebraska, New York, Massachusetts and Maine have been considering legislation that would require manufacturers to make diagnostic, service and repair information available to farmers and independent repair shops. But they are being met with opposition, not only from vehicle manufacturers, but also from tech companies, like Apple and Google, who also want to limit access to their software.

Farming is characterized by defined windows; fixed time frames for seeding, spraying and harvesting. For many farmers, a broken combine or tractor isn’t merely an inconvenience, it has the potential for disastrous financial implications. While a farmer could historically tweak or repair their equipment on a rainy day, or even in the field where it broke down, requiring a dealer to not only service equipment, but diagnose a problem means an expensive farm call or an expensive truck ride to the dealership, for something that could be as simple as a clogged filter. Dealer consolidation has only added to the cost and inconvenience when the dealer is your only avenue for repair.

The idea of what constitutes “ownership” is becoming increasingly important because computer chips, and the software that runs them, are in everything, from your car and combine, to your fridge. When something is on warranty, the manufacturer has every right to tell us when and where to get it fixed, but once “owners” become entirely liable for a product’s service and repair, they should have the right to repair it wherever they want.

No thanks. I’ll take the stairs Observation

A

s I get older, I find that it takes considerably longer to write a column, prepare a sermon, write a letter or decide what to say in a greeting card. I spend much more time thinking before I ever sit down at my desk and actually begin to put words on paper.

My goal is simple—I want my writing to be easily understood and my sermons to be given in ways that ref lect the love, acceptance and forgiveness God offers to all who believe in Him. I would like to think that this is a sign of wisdom that comes with age; but I am sure there will be some who might want to question that. One thing is certain—I am becoming more critical and increasingly skeptical when it comes to the claims some preachers make in their sermons.

For example—what’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear a preacher begin a sermon with the words: “I

FAITHFULLY YOURS Neil Strohschein am going to say whatever I feel like saying tonight and then, at the end of the day, I’ll ask God to forgive me because I know it’s a lot easier to be forgiven than it is to get permission.” My first reaction—“What if God says ‘No?’” Or, how do you react when you hear someone say: “I don’t believe in going to see doctors or taking medicine. If I get sick, I will pray, ask God to heal me and expect that he will.”

My first reaction—“What if God wants to use the skills of a doctor as part of the healing process?”

The two scenarios I’ve just described are identical to the second challenge that Jesus faced at the end of his 40 days of temptation. The Devil took him to the highest point on the roof of the temple in

Jerusalem and said: “If you’re the son of God, jump down. He will send an angel to rescue you before you land.” Jesus reply was simple: “It is written—don’t put God to the test.”

That’s another way of saying: “Don’t force God’s hand. Don’t back him into a corner and force him to do something that he doesn’t want to do.” If you suddenly find yourself in a situation where you need his help, ask for it and it will come. But don’t put yourself in harm’s way and then cry out to God and expect him to save you; because chances are, he won’t.

So, when you speak to others, speak with respect using words that you know will please God. Speaking respectfully to everyone

in all circumstances saves you the embarrassment of having to accept responsibility and apologize for inappropriate or offensive remarks. What you said will come back to haunt you long after you said it. Your apology will be forgotten the next day. So take heed when you speak, and do so with respect.

If you’re sick, go to the doctor, follow the advice you receive and take the treatment the doctor prescribes. God has gifted doctors, nurses, technicians and other medical personnel with the necessary knowledge, wisdom and sk ills to diagnose illnesses and prescribe treatment. He will, most often, use them to point us in the direction that will lead to healing and wholeness.

And if you ever f ind yourself on top of a high building and hear a mysterious voice telling you to jump, do what Jesus did.

Turn to the voice and say: “No thanks. I’ll take the stairs.”

Teetering on the top rung?

F

or many years I felt like the filling of a sandw ichcaring for those beneath me, children and such, and caring for those above me, parents. You know how you make a good peanut butter and jelly sandwich by heavily spreading the peanut butter on the bottom slice and the jelly on the top and then forcibly compressing the two? (yes, there is a correct way to make a pb and j sandwich!) I felt a lot like that compressed goo.

First my mother passed away and then, ten years later- eleven plus years ago- my father died. Not only was I an orphan, I transferred from the filling to the upper crust in this sandwich of life.

I have thought a great deal about this steady and natural progression of old age. Most of the women that I looked up to and admired are already gone. In many instances I have had the

As I expressed my appreciation, they were invariably surprised. They had seen themselves as simply living the best life they could. Recalling my watching them, I wonder who is watching me and what do they see? I can’t say that I volunteered to become the leader of the pack, the old girl on the block, the next in line.

But it happened. That is one part of my grief when I recall all those whom I have loved that are now dead – my parents, my aunts and uncles,

my parent’s friends who were more than friends to me, almost more surrogate parents- I am now a front line warrior.

Another simile I like is life is like a ladder, and I am nearing the top rung.

The view from here is intriguing. Things from the past, the offences and the offenders are smaller. My father had a saying that drove me nuts. When life seemed unfair, or I was denied privileges he would ask – what difference will it make 40 years from now?

To a child, or a youth, the idea of anything forty years from now is inconceivable. But, alas, too often he was right.

I am not referring to life changing tragedy, for that can affect our l i fe forever. But t he little petty annoyances.

Really, 40 years hence, I laugh.

This view from the top rung – and thankfully I hope to linger and enjoy the view- is so different from any I expected.

Let’s face it, I never thought about growing old, still don’t! It does place my past in f ine definition, I had it good.

I am blessed. Others on the higher rungs are meeting my eyes with wisdom and knowledge exchanged in a glance.

In a local restaurant I overheard a conversation between a young child and male adult. As the child slid out of the booth his jacket caught on his pants. He turned and asked – how did that happen? The wise adult replied – how does anything happen? I am now 72, how did that happen?

Someone showed me some pictures of a recent sunset.

The flaming red and fiery orange melted over in a bright yellow. It was spectacular. The sunsets on the prairies are beautiful. I could stop on the side of road and just watch this mighty ball disappear behind the far horizon.

It makes me stop and think “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).

When I enter a hospital room I see a total different array of colors. Often the walls are painted a light green or faint beige. It is restful on the eyes and brings a calm atmosphere in the room. It makes us speak in a soft voice.

“Be still, and know that I am God.” The sun is shining and I see sparkles on the snow in my front yard and on the roof of the garage. It has not been stepped on and looks pure white. Psalm 12:6 comes to mind: “The Words of the Lord are pure words ...”

God’s Word, the Bible, will stand forever and be a strength to our hearts.

Respect for Veterans

Every day, members of our Canadian Armed Forces put on their uniforms and go to work to help maintain the freedoms that Canadians often take for granted.

Our troops were on the front lines in the First and Second World Wars, Korea, Afghanistan and Libya.

Many more have taken part in peacekeeping missions in many other countries around the world.

As Conservatives, we have, and always will, support our men and women in uniform. Like all Canadians, we will be forever grateful for their service to our nation.

Canadian veterans have asked the Liberal government for the respect and compensation they deserve and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau shows them nothing but disrespect. During a town hall meeting in Edmonton a few weeks ago, the Prime Minister told a solider, who lost one of his legs in Afghanistan, that veterans are asking for more than his government is prepared to give right now. This is unacceptable.

This Liberal government managed to find ten million dollars to pay off a convicted terrorist, but is not willing to support the men and women who have made sacrifices for the benefit of all Canadians.

During the 2015 election campaign, Trudeau promised that he would not fight veterans in court, but this has become just another one of many broken promises to Canadians. It is time for him to put the needs of Canadian veterans first.

The Conservative caucus believes that Prime Minister Trudeau should apologize to all the veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces for the insensitive comments he made, and take action to fulfill the promises he made to them during the last election.

Our veterans deserve our respect and support. You can count on me, and my fellow Conservative Members of Parliament, to fight for them every day, because they fought for all of us.

Pre-election parties highlight candidate disparities With seven days remaining until the mayoral “Race of the Century,” groups gathered throughout Lennox Valley to cheer on their candidates.

“Silver Tongue” Dick Bland held his campaign gala in the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, where 200 supporters gathered to celebrate his upcoming victory. Red and white streamers hung throughout the room, alongside photos of Bland glued to letter-size sheets of red and white construction paper. All who gathered knew Silver Tongue had at least two advantages in the race.

First, he hadn’t angered many good folks over the past four years, which was quite the accomplishment for an incumbent in the Valley. If it hadn’t been for the furor over egg prices and the Bank of Canada, folks would have been hard-pressed to name any issue that divided the community more over the previous years.

Bland’s second advantage was self-evident. Everyone in the room was quite certain that God was on Dick’s side. After all, he was a loyal church-goer, with 17 years of Sunday School perfect attendance pins to show for it. With God on his side, the mayor was a shoo-in.

The gala began with a somber yet powerful prayer by the church’s pastor, Brother Billy Joe Prather. That was followed by a rousing rendition of “Onward Christian Soldiers,” sung by the attendees and accompanied by Loraine Sutherland, First Baptist Church pianist.

Two miles away, on Highway 11, there was another celebration taking place. The Veteran’s Lodge was the perfect spot for Raymond Cooper’s

“Campaign Bash,” as he had referred to it during his radio talk show for the past five days. There were no prayers at Raymond’s celebration.

There were no choirs or hymns.

There were, however, tipsy veterans mixing alongside Raymond’s most fervent supporters. And, instead of hymns, the two cracked speakers in the jukebox blared “Tequila.” To be fair, there were a few inebriated celebrants singing along.

Juliet Stoughton, known until recently as “Claire” to the few folks she had met in the Valley, held a less animated event than her opponents.

Supported by her friend and rector, Sarah Hyden-Smith, along with Iris Long, editor of The Hometown News, Juliet listened as the two of them discussed campaign strategy, all the while knowing her chances of winning were someplace between slim and none.

Fortunately, Iris and Sarah were able to convince Juliet not to make the annual First Baptist Church Men’s Breakfast and Turkey Shoot an issue in the campaign. Long shared that she planned to endorse a candidate in the upcoming edition of The Hometown News, and pancakes and turkeys didn’t make for a suitable campaign platform.

Other than a story announcing

Juliet’s campaign in the previous edition of the paper, there had been little notice of her candidacy. Cooper, obviously aware her chances of winning were miniscule, ignored Juliet’s campaign after initially reacting to the news when she entered the race. “Silver Tongue” seemed content to focus on his main adversary, Raymond Cooper.

With Cooper running on the slogan, “In your heart, you know he’s right,” and Bland sticking with the rallying cry from his first race, “Stand with Bland,” Juliet needed a catchy and memorable slogan, something to cause voters to recognize she was a viable candidate.

That’s when it came to her – “Vote for the egg-cellent, egg-citing candidate, Juliet Stoughton!”

“That’s funny,” quipped Sarah.

“I love it,” Iris chimed in. “It’s funny, and it reminds voters of Raymond’s involvement in the egg scandal.”

Four hours later, reading over their notes one last time, Iris declared, “It just might work.”

Meanwhile, Cooper acted as though he hadn’t a care in the world as Juliet’s troops discussed campaign strategy.

All the while, Raymond laughed and danced with his adoring fans as George Strait sang, “Tequila!”

Black Forest Oatmeal cookies

My grandson is partial to maraschino cherries and chocolate chips. This is a great way to give him his loves in one recipe. If you are sending these to school, substitute the almonds with coconut as most local schools are nut free, but coconut is allowed.

Black Forest Oatmeal cookies 1 cup butter 1 cup white sugar 2 eggs 2 Tbsp. Maraschino cherry juice 1 tsp. Vanilla 1 2/3 cup flour 1 tsp. Baking soda

1/2 tsp. Baking powder 1/2 tsp. Salt 2 1/2 cups oatmeal 1 cup chopped maraschino cherries 1 cup chocolate chips 3/4 cup slivered almonds

Cream, butter and sugar together. Add the eggs, cherry juice and vanilla and stir. In another bowl mix the flour, baking soda, powder and salt. Add the dry to the creamed and stir. Stir in the oatmeal, then add the cherries, chips and almonds. Drop by spoonfuls onto a greased baking sheet and bake at 350° for around 10 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on wire rack.

Neepawa Area Health Auxiliary Report Submitted Nora Kaye The Neepawa Area Health Auxiliary (N.A.H.A.) is compromised of women from the Town of Neepawa and the Municipalities of Langford, Rosedale, Lansdowne and Glenella. The purpose of the N.A.H.A. Is: 1) To add to the comfort and welfare of Neepawa Health Centre patients, Country Meadows Care Home residents and to the recipients of health services in our community 2) To raise funds by means they have the approval of the Regional Health Authority 3) To fund initiatives that are deemed by the Regional Health Authority to be in the best interests of health service delivery in the community 4) To foster positive relations between health services and the public and 5) To cooperate fully with the Regional Health Authority through properly established channels of communication.

The cost of health care is steadily increasing and hospitals, care homes and health units must continue to provide high quality care in spite of financial restrictions.

Over the years N.A.H.A. Has raised thousands of dollars which have been used to provide equipment, furnishings and supplies for which no funding is supplied within the government grant system.

N.A.H.A. Fund raising events include Tim Horton’s Smile Cookie Week, an annual fall canvass of the Neepawa and area businesses and a fall raffle and fall tea.

Auxiliary members make perogies and hold a perogy sale for auxiliary members and their friends and for staff at the hospital and care home. Proceeds from the perogy sale go to an Education Fund which provides a $1000.00 scholarship to a graduate of N.A.C.I. Entering their second year in a health care program at a college or university.

Money in the Education Fund can also be used to sponsor educational seminars for members of the Auxiliary and the community. The N.A.H.A. Gift cupboard at Neepawa Health Unit has been a source of revenue for many years while providing convenience articles such as combs, toothbrushes and toothpaste, knitted slippers baby sweaters and afghans. Many of these items are donated

by Auxiliary members and members of the community.

In 2017 N.A.H.A. purchased for Neepawa Health Centre a television, a mobile Mayo Stand, and chairs and commodes. The auxiliary purchased a vital sign monitor, walkie/talkies and a Hobart mixer for Country Meadows as well as donating funds to the activities program at the care home.

Eight community centres across Manitoba, including one in Austin, will split more than $84,000 to purchase and install new commercial-grade kitchen equipment.

“With this funding, our government is investing in the future of food innovation, product development and Manitoba’s entrepreneurial spirit,” said Agriculture Minister Ralph Eichler. “Community centres are often the launching pad for new food products, giving Manitobans access to the space and equipment needed to grow from a home-based business into something more. This is an important investment in communityled economic development and local value-added processing.”

Austin and District Community Club Inc. will receive more than $10,400. Eileen Clarke, MLA for Agassiz recently noted that she’s very pleased to see this significant investment into Austin’s community hall.

“This grant will allow the club to enhance food product development opportunities for local entrepreneurs, as well the services provided to the community as a whole.” said Clarke.

Funding for this grant to the Austin and District Community Club is provided by Manitoba Agriculture and will be used to purchase and install a double convection oven for the club’s community hall.

Other community kitchens that received funding for new equipment included: - Holland Community Hall. ($8,200) - Steinbach Legion, Branch 190. ($14,300) - Cooks Creek Community Centre. ($6,800) - Rural Municipality of Roblin ($12,500) - Town of Swan River ($10,000) - Riverview Community Centre - Winnipeg. ($8,600) - Fort Whyte Alive - Winnipeg. ($13,200)

On Feb. 12, the Neepawa Belles, Beaux and Builders held their 4-H Communications Night at N.A.C.I. In the communications part of 4-H, all members need to do either a speech or a visual presentation.

Members worked hard to prepare their work and the night was a success.

It can be nerve-wracking to get up in front of an audience and speak, but it is good practice for later in life.

Thank you very much to our judges: Brian McKee, Darlene McDonald, Glennis Black, Scott Freeman, Cynthia Chartrand and Jamie Ellis. Some of our judges were former 4-H members and gave us good feedback about our presentations.

Schmidt family built new life in Canada A Seniors Story

Wayne Hildebrand Neepawa Banner & Press Thirty three years ago my job took me to a beautiful village along the Grass River called Waldersee, Manitoba. The village is located about one hour north east of Neepawa. Over time I got to know some of the area farmers with last names like Schmidt, Rossnagel, Single, Schultz, Dilk, Bohn, Mitchler, Oswald, Klassen, Mauthe and Marohn. I always wondered how a cluster of German immigrants homesteaded and established a German named village near the eastern boundary of the Rural Municipality of Glenella. I decided to ask Kurt Schmidt, who was born 92 years ago at his home farm in Waldersee.

Ku r t’s fat her, Fred Schmidt, was a drafted 17 year old German soldier in World War I. He was captured by Western Allies and sent to a prisoner of war camp in France.

When the war ended, new country boundaries were established in Europe. The Schmidt family land ended up in Poland. If they wanted to retain their German cit-

izenship, they had to leave.

Combined with soaring inflation in 1920 and the Polish government demanding Fred join the Polish army, the Schmidt family decided to immigrate to Canada.

The Schmidts were related to the Rossnagels, who had already homesteaded in the Waldersee area, so Waldersee was their destination.

Family connections brought many German settlers to the area. It took ten days for the Schmidt family to cross the ocean, and two weeks to get from Quebec to Winnipeg.

The Rossnagel and Oswald families were some of the first pioneers in the Waldersee area around 1896. They helped name Waldersee, which comes

from the German words Valt and See, meaning forest and lake. They bought their homesteads for ten dollars; 160 acres of swamp, bush and native prairie.

They had to build a fence around their hay stacks to keep the moose, elk and deer from eating their hay, and the mosquitos were so bad they would stampede the bison.

Fred and Rosalie (Prellwitz) Schmidt, along with Fred’s parents, Johann and Martha, arrived in Waldersee in 1924. They bought a 320 acre farm from Karl Siegel who moved to Tenby.

Mr. Siegel built coffins and Mrs. Siegel was a respected midwife, so “they had both ends covered,” joked Kurt.

Fred and Rosalie had six children; Ursula, Erwin, Kurt, Herbert, Richard and Victoria. Kurt was born in 1926. It was the beginning of difficult economic times and the drought of the 1930s was upon them.

In 1930, Kurt’s father could not make his mortgage payments, and they lost their farmland. However, they continued to rent the land.

In 1940 they bought back the land that they lost. “In the 1930s we did anything we could to earn money,” said Kurt. “We sold horsehair and cowhides, picked Seneca root, and skinned Kurt & Frances Schmidt wedding picture, Waldersee 1950.

The added benefit of rabbits was they were good to eat. “One of our neighbors boasted she could cook rabbits 50 different ways,” said Frances Schmidt.

Germania School was Waldersee’s first school. It opened in 1899. As settlement grew, two schools provided education to the Waldersee settlers. Germania School was renamed Herriot School and a second school opened called Cory School. “I could not speak of word of English when I started Cory School,” Kurt said. “In the summer I took German School at the Waldersee Lutheran Church

to learn how to read and write in German.’’ When Kurt’s father became ill, he had no choice but to stay on the farm and work when he was fourteen years old, completing grades nine and ten by correspondence. Kurt completed grade eleven at Glenella Collegiate.

Kur t met Fra nces Buschau from Plumas when Frances was teaching at Cory School and boarding at the Schmidt’s home.

They were married in 1950 at the Waldersee Lutheran Church. “The service took forever,” said Frances. “The service was in German for the older folks, and then we repeated it in English.”

Kurt and Frances have six children; Ken, Faye, Russell, Donald, Leona and David. “They all have jobs, are doing well, and we are very proud of them,” said Frances.

Kurt and Frances have been involved in community affairs throughout their life. At 92 years of age, Kurt is the oldest male in the Rural Municipality of Glenella. Frances (88 years old) enjoys quilting for the Victoria Quilts cancer support program and sewing for the Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg. “We have seen a lot of change,” said Kurt.

“Much of it was good, but our community, like many, is disappearing. On my land alone I have cleaned up 6 yard sites, there isn’t much left in Waldersee, and our church congregation is down to 25 people. On the bright side, Waldersee has been a great community to live in and raise our family.

We still live in our own home and we are about to celebrate our 68th wedding anniversary. We have been blessed.”

Submitted Grain Growers of Canada Canada’s grain farmers welcomed some positive news in Budget 2018, but are concerned about the lack of action on key priorities for farmers. Last year’s Federal budget established an ambitious target to increase agri-food exports to $75 billion by 2025 but Budget 2018 did little to deliver on that goal.

“Grain farmers welcome the budget’s commitments on trade, regulatory reform and tax changes,” said Grain Growers of Canada (GGC) President, Jeff Nielsen. “However these commitments are baby steps at a time when a giant leap is needed.”

GGC looks forward to working with the government to better understand how the commitment for regulatory reform, the small business tax changes, the Low Carbon Leadership Fund and the investments in the Canadian Food Inspection Agency will benefit the hard-working middle-class families on grain farms across the country.

“Grain growers are encouraged by the commitment to expanded trade in Asia,” said Nielsen. “More trade commissioners are nice but what our economy really needs is ratification of the CPTPP before parliament breaks for summer, the launch of free trade negotiations with China and the passage of Bill C-49 to secure a rail transportation system that works.”

GGC welcomed the announcement of a Farm Credit Canada (FCC) lending product for women entrepreneurs which demonstrates the government’s recognition of the important role that women play in the past, present and future of the agriculture industry.

2017 budget money left unspent GGC also took note that $100 million earmarked for funding for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada programs for 2018 will go unspent. GGC are concerned what impact this will have on farmers across Canada and on what opportunities may be missed to promote the growth of the rural economy.

Neepawa Farmers stage monumental comeback Tiger Hills Hockey League playoff update

It would have been very easy for the Neepawa Farmers to call it quits after falling behind two-games-to-none, in their THHL quarter final series with the Cartwright Clippers. But instead of giving up on the post-season, the Farmers powered through with a thrilling five game comeback.

The Neepawa Farmers headed into game three, on Thursday, Feb. 22, needing a big effort at the Yellowhead Arena. They did that, and then some, on the way to a 4-0 win.

The Farmers got off to a quick start, in order to set the tone for the rest of the night. Neepawa’s Ward Szucki was able to do just that with a goal just 48 seconds into the first period.

The Farmers continued to put on the pressure, eventually adding to their lead before the end of the first with Ian Kerkowich, putting one past Cartwright goaltender Troy Chandler.

The emotions of the game were also ramped up in the first, after a check into the boards injured a Cartwright player. The injured player had to be aided off the ice, after being severely

shaken up from the contact.

That would ensure the rest of the game would be played with some increased intensity.

A Rodney White goal early in the second period, provided Neepawa with a solid 3-0 lead. The Clippers would increase the pressure, which did lead to several offensive chances, but nothing that slipped past Farmers’ goaltender Brad Nelson.

While the goaltender had a solid night in net, he also had a little bit of luck on his side. Mid-way through the second period, a streaking Cartwright player came into the Neepawa zone after a loose puck. Nelson skated out of the crease to wrangle the puck, but the Clipper forward was able to bump it away. He was unable, however, to corral the loose puck and put it in the back of the open net.

For the final 20 minutes, the penalty minutes started to pile up, mainly on the Neepawa side of the sin bin. Kyle McDonald and Reigan Buchanan ended up being the worst culprits, getting tagged with a game misconduct and 10 minute major respectively.

That ended up making the Farmers short-handed for the final seven minutes of

regulation. Neepawa was able to push back on Cartwright’s offensive effort, keeping them from finding that elusive goal. With just 33 seconds left in the third, Szucki scored his second of the night, off a chance on a breakaway.

One down, two to go Game four would be played in Cartwright on Saturday, Feb. 24. After surrendering the first goal to Cartwright in the first period, the Farmers would bounce back in the second with three of their own.

Ward Szucki, Ian Kerkowich and Matt Lowry each scored for Neepawa. Drew Haight was the Clipper who scored in the first. Haight would add a second goal early in the third, but it was matched by a Bret Levandoski goal a few minutes later, making the final score 4-2 Neepawa.

Two down, one more to go It would be all or nothing for the Neepawa Farmers and Cartwright Clippers on Sunday, Feb. 25, at the Yellowhead Arena. At the end of regulation, it was the Farmers who completed their incredible comeback with 7-3 win.

Bantam Chiefs compete at provincials

The Yellowhead Bantam Chiefs put in a strong effort at the Rural Provincial Championship, recently held in Killarney. The Chiefs made it all the way to the bronze medal game, where they were narrowly defeated, by a 3-2 score. Mitchell Collyer of Onanole and Foxwarren’s Colby Wotton scored for the Chiefs in that game.

During the round robin portion of the tournament, Yellowhead defeated Pembina Valley, Parkland and Interlake. In the semi-final showdown, the Chiefs squared off against a determined Eastman Selects squad, and fell 8-2.

As for the championship game, the Southwest Cougars beat Eastman 5-3 to win the provincial crown.

Female Bantams ready for Provincials The Female Bantam

Chiefs are eagerly awaiting the start of the AAA Female Provincials, taking place in Oakbank/Garson from Mar. 2-4. The round robin portion of the event will see the Chiefs face-off against Interlake,Westman and Central Plains.

Midget Chiefs end regular season A pair of road games over the weekend wrapped up the regular season for the Chiefs AAA Midget Boys squad. The team started things off with an 8-3 loss to the Winnipeg Wild on Saturday, Feb. 24. Colby Joseph of Elkhorn and Bray Rookes of Manson each scored early for the Chiefs, while Neepawa’s Braden Gillies put away an unassisted short-hander marker late in the third.

Gillies also had an assist earlier in the night, on the Rookes goal, to lead the way for Yellowhead on the stat-sheet.

The Chiefs would bounce

back the following night, with a 5-1 victory over the Interlake Lightning.

After giving up the first goal of the game, Yellowhead answered back with five straight to secure the win. Birtle’s Brody Wilson scored twice, while Chad Nychuk (Rossburn), Brian Mentuck (Waywayseecappo) and AP Parker Johnson all contributed singles for the win. Jeremy Dutcawich of Foxwarren made 29 saves to earn the victory, his 22nd of the season.

With this win, Yellowhead ends the regular season with a record of 26-20-2, good enough for 54 points and sixth place in the standings. Next up for the Chiefs is a first round playoff matchup with the Winnipeg Bruins in a bestof-five series. Game one will be in Winnipeg on Friday, Mar. 2. Game two will be in Shoal Lake on Sunday, Mar. 4. The start time is 7:30 p.m. at the Shoal Lake Communiplex.

Neepawa Novas compete in Southport Submitted Neepawa Novas Gymnastics Club

The Neepawa Novas Gymnastics Club has continued its strong competitive season, with several positive results from the annual Southport Gymnasitcs Competition on Saturday, Feb. 24.

Ten Nova gymnasts participated in the event, which was organized by the Southport Sapphirers. The Sapphirers put on a wonderful competition, attended by numerous clubs around the Province. The results are as follows:

Neepawa branch of VQC: warming lives

Caring people like you and your group help people cope with their daily lives. Thank you for the lovely quilt.”

The above sentiment is but one of the many testimonials the local chapter of Victoria’s Quilts has received since their inception in 2013. The purpose of Victoria’s Quilts is to provide handmade quilts to people with cancer in Canada. By providing these quilts, we hope to bring physical comfort to those dealing with cancer as well as spiritual comfort in knowing that they are not alone in their struggle. Neepawa is home to the only chapter of Victoria’s Quilts in Manitoba.

Agassiz MLA, Eileen Clarke recognized the Neepawa VQC Chapter in a Private Members' Statement on November 23, 2017 “On behalf of the Manitoba Legislature, we thank the dedicated volunteers that create the quilts, offer the support and deliver the comfort to those battling illness.

Madame speaker I ask that all members of the house join me in wishing this group of

volunteers all the best as they continue to fulfill quilt requests and provide comfort and support to those in need.”

The quilts are sewn by dedicated volunteers. There is never a cost to the requester or the recipients of a quilt, as we raise the funds that are needed to pay for the materials.

We have been fortunate enough to receive donations of fabric and quilt tops by caring Manitobans. We also get an incredible deal from Country Lane Quilts in Ste. Rose on the machine quilting process.

Donations have been received from local individuals, and we were given grants last year from The Minnedosa Community Foundation, Manitoba Community Services Council, The Bank of Montreal and Big Grass Foundation. We would also like to acknowledge the generosity of the following service clubs: Minnedosa Credit Union, Neepawa and Gladstone Legion and the Neepawa Legion Ladies, Portage Mutual Insurance, Langruth and Neepawa UCW, The Kinsmen/Kinette Clubs of The Pas, Gimli, Boissevain, Carberry and Stonewall, The Elks Clubs of Carberry, Neepawa and Gladstone, The Rotary Clubs of Neepawa and The Pas and the Royal Purple Club of

Neepawa. As you can see our funding comes from across the province because we have delivered quilts across the province. We would not be able to continue our services without the generosity of all the organizations and individuals.

In 2015 we delivered 82 quilts to cancer patients across Manitoba. 2016 saw a 50 per cent increase in the number of quilts delivered. One hundred twenty-one quilts were delivered to 55 different communities in Manitoba. In 2017 we delivered 162 quilts. This means that since our inception we have delivered almost 400 quilts to 100 communities across Manitoba.

A major fundraiser for the local branch of Victoria's Quilts is returning on March 15.

Last year we held a Stew Lunch Fundraiser, where we served 220 stew lunches. We have moved the fundraiser to the Legion, because of its increased popularity.

Last year, there were quite a few businesses who purchased tickets for their staff and made an event out of it. We encourage more businesses to get involved and purchase groups of tickets. What could be more fun than a stew lunch? Get your friends and coworkers together and come out for an

awesome Thursday lunch. Take outs and delivery will also be available. Tickets will be available at Arts Forward, and from Margaret VanBuskirk 204 476 2482 Mark the date-- March 15 between 11:30 and 1:30.

Federal budget gets it mostly wrong according to critics

The federal government tabled their budget on Tuesday emphasizing they intend to close the gender gap in pay scales and encourage more fathers to take paternity leave. Critics were quick to point out that while these may be laudable goals, the country is in need of many other economic initiatives.

by Premier Brian Pallister held a news conference Tuesday afternoon. Pallister said, “This is a midterm budget. There is nothing to help with health care. There is some money there to help with addictions but it would also have been a good time to give some tax relief.” Finance Minister Cameron Friesen said, “The economy is growing and federal spending is growing but in face of what is happening in the United States with their tax cuts, the federal government should have provided some tax relief.” Both men were very disappointed there was no mention of help for the Port of Churchill. Friesen noted that the federal government had backed away from some of the more damaging proposals of last year that would harm small businesses.

Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa MP Robert Sopuck said, “This is a typical Liberal tax and spend budget that adds $118 billion to the debt.” Sopuck is very worried about what the proposed new regulatory processes will

do to major projects. “Suncor is not investing in Canada any more and there was nothing in this budget for rural Canada or for agriculture.”

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) says the 2018 federal budget may be somewhat less harmful than originally expected, but will not improve the overall health or competitiveness of the nation’s entrepreneurs. CFIB President Dan Kelly said, “The tax changes for small business remain a billion-dollar take-

Volunteer work by the auxiliary includes providing assistance as well as cookies and beverages at the annual flu clinic held in November, visiting long term patients at the hospital and helping with the strawberry tea at Country Meadows in August. N.A.H.A. Members make tray favours for the Health Centre and Country Meadows and deliver poinsettias to the Health Centre, Country Meadows and the Health Unit at Christmas. The Auxiliary also supplies a gift to the first baby born at Neepawa Health Centre in the New Year.

N.A.H.A. holds meetings a year in January, April, June, September, October and November at the Neepawa Legion Hall. The current membership is 59. New members are always welcome. Anyone interested in becoming a member can contact Past President Ivy Cameron, President Noreen Hollier, Vice President Bernice Baker, Secretary Judy Perrett or Treasurer Eleanor Nicholson.
