Overview Detective Madison Knight concluded the case of a strangled woman an isolated incident. But when another woman’s body is found in a park killed by the same line of neckties, she realizes they’re dealing with something more serious.
Despite mounting pressure from the Sergeant and Chief to close the case even if it means putting an innocent man behind bars, and a partner who is more interested
in saving his marriage than stopping a potential serial killer, Madison may have to go it alone if there's not going to be another victim.
Reviews Welcome to the dark world that Detective Madison Knight is confronted with everyday. Full of sadistic, viscous criminals that possess no qualms about unleashing their demented fury on unsuspecting victims. A world traditionally dominated by men that requires a female to not only be extremely tough, but just as strong-willed and stoic as the men that she works with.
Enter Madison. A savvy detective that has the ability to roam around inside the mind of a killer yet remain untainted by the psychotic thoughts. Determined to bring justice to the silent victims by using her honed instincts and hunches that, more often than not, prove to be spot on.
Carolyn Arnold has created a strong female lead in Madison that you will come to not only respect for her tenacity to solve a crime, but her personal quirkiness as well. Madison is a well-rounded character that both men and women will enjoy reading about.
Bravo Carolyn! Now, time to snag some chocolate and read the next book in the Madison Knight series, Justified. In her middle 30s and single, Madison Knight is a detective in the fictional city of Stiles. The department is filled with men who give her too little respect, people like her Sergeant and her Chief, paper pushers, publicity seekers. Like most procedurals, this excellent story begins with the discovery of a body.
What sets Madison apart, besides the fact that she is a woman, is that she is after the truth. As the pieces start to fall into place, the men are quickly satisfied, but not Madison. Things are not what they seem on the surface; it takes a person of her tenacity to find the real killer.
Ties That Bind features a lot of entertaining dialogue between Madison and her partner, Terry. The two can never quite separate barbs relating to their unravelling personal lives from sniping about which way to go on the strangler case. The bond between them is real and attractive. Madison's head is a complex zone of insecurities based less on her femininity than on being fundamentally unsure about her abilities. She frets about having to give the bad news to the next of kin of the murder victims; she can't forget the old unsolved cases; she often wonders if her partner or even the Sergeant might be right. Not that she could ever show any sign of weakness -- not in this hardboiled climate! The only thing you can really count on is chocolate. She goes through Hershey bars like there's no tomorrow.
I love it that mundane things keep going wrong in the Stiles police department. A key piece of evidence is lost for a few days, holding up the investigation and jeopardizing it. The DNA lab is backlogged. When Madison inputs the wrong search terms in a DMV search, far too many hits come back, and none of them is the match they were looking for. Such problems make this world seem so gritty and real, and the story believable.
I recently read a Sue Grafton mystery, and not too long ago a couple of Sara Paretsky mysteries. Carolyn Arnold with her Detective Madison Knight is right up there on the same plane with those contemporary masters of the genre. I want a sequel, and I want it now. The author has developed a plot with surprising twists that create a rich texture to keep the reader invested. The interpersonal dynamics between the protagonist and others is interesting, funny, and engaging. Arnold is skilled in accurately writing crime scene investigations down to the seemingly smallest details; it's these details, however, that become the backbone of the story, revealing the unexpected. From the first page to the very last, you will be on your toes.
For someone not too familiar with the workings of a police homicide investigation, this story will give you a whole new perspective on what goes on in the real world. No easy answers, not always a direct lead, oftentimes our police officials must sift through numerous lies and misleading information in what many of us would not have the patience to tackle. Ties that Bind tells a story in a methodically paced
tale that you will find hard to put down, turning page after page as you wait breathlessly for the next twist. It is realistic yet entertaining, an honest look at human nature and individuals from all walks of life. Nothing is as it seems...
Carolyn Arnold has written a nitty gritty story of a murderer’s revenge. Through the various twists and turns, you will never be able to figure out whodunit until the shocking end. I’ve always considered myself fairly good at picking out the villain, but I will tell you I was surprised at the ‘ties’ that led up to an arrest. Way to go, Carolyn!
A well-written piece with all-too-human characters, I was sucked in from the first page when Madison reached for her chocolate-fix. This was a nicely paced story that was not over the top or unrealistic; in fact, I loved every minute of it. It was entertaining without being too dark or depressing, and I can’t wait to read more, Carolyn. Keep them coming! Ties that bind-Madison Knight #1 Carolyn Arnold. Madison Knight is a hard boiled homicide cop with a heavy chocolate bar addiction, and a surly disposition. She and her partner Terry are called to a scene where the victim has been strangled in her bed with an expensive necktie. All suspicion is pointed at the ex-boyfriend—and a mysterious photo of some other man planted in her room. So who did it? They don’t know as they keep arguing about it. Victim #2-An Asian woman whose body was found openly in the park by two teenagers who claim they saw a guy watching them as they found the body. It turns out to be the same guy from the photo. More twists evolve as Madison discovers a startling development in the tale. I thought the story was well written and had to keep guessing which is the sign of a good plot on the part of the author. The lead characters have their own issues and demanding supervisors. I started off not liking Madisons type A personality but warmed up at the end. She is obsessed with work as she has no life and an Achilles heel; left over feelings for a former boyfriend. Ms. Arnold has hinted at interesting back story for our protagonists that we’ll surely discover as the series progresses. Meanwhile I gave the series starter 5 hersey bars. Carolyn Arnold had me hooked from the very first page of The Ties That Bind and the reason for that was Madison Knight. Madison is an unconventional and feisty heroine and from her first appearance, grumpily eating a chocolate bar for
breakfast, I adored her. In addition to a cast of believable characters, Arnold has created a plot that is both exciting and gritty. The twists and turns of the novel are often unexpected and I had no idea how the novel was going to turn out. All I knew was that I couldn't wait to find out and consequently found myself unable to put the book down. I would recommend this novel to anyone who likes an unpredictable and consuming crime novel. I am so pleased that Madison Knight is part of a series because I can't wait to read the next one. Carolyn Arnold nailed it in Ties That Bind!
A mystery is always difficult to write and a good mystery is very rare – Carolyn Arnold definitely nailed it with Ties That Bind!
Madison Knight is a strong female character who excels in the male dominated police department without the annoying whining so common in many novels. Her interactions with the rest of the well-drawn characters are believable and you will find yourself cheering for the Hershey bar eating, stubborn but likeable homicide detective.
The mystery is well done, fast moving and keeps you guessing. I mean, letting you peek into the mind of the killer and still surprising you at the end…that is an incredible feat! You won’t be disappointed. I’m looking forward to seeing Madison Knight in the next books. I have found another must read series! Ties that bind--First off I love book titles with double meanings and this one is certainly that. This is a great read for those who enjoy detective novels and chronological play-out, oh, and the excellent twists of skilled writers. I found myself trying to guess where this book was going only to be pleasantly surprised where it went. Without giving anything away, something that stuck with me since completing the book is Detective Madison Knight's reactions to viewing the deceased women her own age and how it brings to light her own mortality. Carolyn Arnold's portrayal of that really made me stop and think. I love books like that. If you like thrilling crime dramas, this is the book for you!
TIES THAT BIND is the first book in the Madison Knight series by CAROLYN ARNOLD. This book has twists and turns that keeps the reader guessing as well as the lead character, Homicide Detective Madison Knight. This character was so much fun to read about and get to know. Throughout TIES THAT BIND, the reader is taken on a journey of clues and gut instincts from one murder to the next. I became so riveted in this investigation that I felt a part of it as the book progressed, so much so that I found myself getting angry and yelling aloud at some of the players as I continued to read.
I don't want to give too much of the book away, but there were some very twisted but brilliant clues left specifically for the police at the initial crime scene by the bad guy to move the investigators in the direction he wanted them to go. For those of you that have read the book, you know what I'm talking about. That's right. The picture. For those of you that haven't read the book, I can't wait for you to read about the picture and see what I'm talking about. This was an AMAZINGLY creative twist. MS. ARNOLD kept me completely absorbed with the action, as well as the dialog between characters, while reading this book.
If you like crime dramas, police procedurals and suspenseful, edge-of-your-seat thrillers with a strong-willed, intense female lead, you have got to read this book! You won't be disappointed. I highly recommend TIES THAT BIND by CAROLYN ARNOLD.
