Overview What happens when you create rules to keep others out?

One thing Emerson Moore has come to terms with is that she is the school slut. She knows her way around a frat house and how to get what she wants. She doesn’t make any excuses for her actions and she doesn’t pretend to be

anything different. She is who she is and with that she knows how to have a good time. She’s made rules to keep relationships at bay and avoid the demons of her past.

When her best friend, Cole has his two friends from back home move in with him she begins to think she has met her match with Jaxon Riley. Jax is the perfect mixture of tattooed muscle and a sweet-talking mouth. With “hand” written notes, a voice that exudes sex and knowing just how to get under her skin, Jaxon learns how to break all the rules. But will he just end up breaking her heart anyway?

Reviews Another great book! Emerson will tell you she's the school slut. She's not embarrassed by it and not ashamed. She has 3 rules she goes by. Never sleep with someone a friend has feelings for. Never sleep with someone who is in a relationship. And never sleep with anyone more than 3 times. I didn't see her as a slut. Look at her rules, she's not ruthless and uncaring in regards to other people she's not screwing someone else's boyfriend. She's having sex with single guys who are very aware of her rules. She has two close friends who know her and why she closes herself off to love and relationships. Cole is a football player she and Quinn met at freshman orientation. Quinn is not only her BFF but her sister. Coles friends from home relocate to their school and move into his apartment, Jaxon and Jace Riley. The Riley twins. Cole just so happens to live next door to Quinn and Em. Em still keeps her rules when she starts messing with Jaxon. She figures she can have fun with him and after her 3 times she'll have had her fill. What she doesn't expect is Jaxon to slowly seep into her heart and challenge all her rules. They do become friends first, until the attraction is too much for the both of them to handle. Emerson does overreact, run from her problems and try to use sex as a distraction. She does do something stupid that breaks her own heart. With that, she realizes a lot of things. Like the reason she closed herself off, it was all for nothing. Her parents death was not under the circumstances she had believed all these years. She realized that she does love, not everybody cheats, and not everyone will leave. Now Jax, he's had his own difficult past, but he was overall a great, decent and sexy guy! Jace was yummy.

They each had to work their shit out which pissed EVERYONE off! Cole, Quinn and Jace. They were so tired of their shit, Em and Jaxon were so stubborn! But in the end, I was so pleased with how I got my HEA. How about that cover? Hot, right? Of course I would like it, being the the selfprofessed hippie chick that I am (with a name like 'Nevaeh' are you really surprised?). Moving beyond the cover, the book is even hotter. Like hot as hell, hotter. And unbelievably, this is a debut novel. I still can't get over that!

After reading some fantastic novels lately with hard-hitting issues, I decided I needed something a little less serious and a little more fun. This was perfect! Of course, these two still had their own issues to deal with (don't we all?), but this was a much more sexy and light-hearted read....exactly what I needed.

Let's talk Emerson (Em, Emmy, Ems...). She was definitely a leading lady I liked, and trust me, I don't like many of them. If you are sick and tired of the virginal college girls who can't make a decision to save their life, then you will love Emerson. She is unabashedly...well, for lack of a better term, slutty. But in a good way, as in there is a method to the madness.

I'm very open about who I am, I don't pretend not to sleep with guys and I don't deny when I have done just that. I've accepted who I am. The girl who will never become serious about anyone, who will enjoy life, have fun with guys along the way and never get her heart broken.

Jaxon Riley ("Jax"): Mmm, mmm, mmm. And Lord have mercy, there are two of him.

The black leather jacket looked like felt like butter on his shoulders and his skin was tanned just enough to make his ice blue eyes pop. His hair was such a warm dark brown, with a few natural highlights spread throughout it, it called for fingers to run through it....His face had just a little bit of scruff to add that rougher look to him. He was definitely no pretty California boy.

Oh, and my personal favorite...

He definitely had an athletic body with a playground of muscle right underneath those clothes.

A "playground of muscle"...that sounds like my kind of playground ;o)

There truly wasn't a character I didn't like in this book. Cole, Quinn, Jace, Micah, Devon...hell, I even liked all the characters' parents! I particularly loved the relationships between the parents and their kids. Nice to see some that aren't grossly dysfunctional for once.

"I really hope I don't screw it up," I whispered into her hair. She pulled back but kept a grip on each of my arms. "Guess what, love, you will. So will he. It's what you do with it, once you've screwed up that matters."

Beyond the perfectly-written characters is a truly great story. I didn't want to stop reading, which is always a good sign. And thankfully, Ms. Lauren didn't leave us with a nasty cliffhanger. Not that I'm not dying for more of Jaxon, Jace, and the whole gang....oh, believe me, I am. And based on the author's note at the end of the book, I think she will be making me a very happy reader in the future. So thank you, Ms. Lauren, for sharing your talents with us, and I will definitely be looking for more of your work here soon.......

“Tell me that you want me,” he whispered. “I want you.” Always. “Only me?” “Only you.” Had there ever been anyone else? It's been a while since I devoured a book and let me tell you, folks, I ate this one UP!

I will begin with the fact that this particular story is not entirely unique - college kids, unlikely romance, bad decision making....I could go on. But the real star of this story was the writing - it was undeniably incredible. It's fluidity kept it

moving like a well oiled machine; constantly keeping the reader desperately engaged, and I for one, was kidnapped in chains within the first couple of pages.

Trust me...that just doesn't happen to me very often.

Now to the main characters, Emerson, ("Em") and Jaxon. I'm not one for spoilers so I won't be doing it here either, but I will tell you that chivalry is not dead, (thanking the awesome man above), and I wish men still thought like several guys in this story. In this day and age, witnessing the refreshing way nearly all the male characters felt about those they loved, and their need to protect, completely escalated the term "swoon-worthy" to a whole new level. The little touches Lauren brought to this story of how Jaxon in particular showed his affections were equally enchanting.

I'm completely amazed that Beautiful Broken Rules is Kimberly Lauren's first book. If this is any indication of her future work, PLEASE sign me up now for automatic downloads because holy cow, this chick can write! “I’m not one of those girls that just go around sleeping with any guy, with no care to anyone’s feelings. I have three rules: never sleep with someone that a friend has feelings for, never sleep with someone who is in a known relationship (when this isn’t disclosed to me, it is not my fault), and finally, never sleep with someone more than three times.”

Emerson Moore is by far one of my favorite heroines. She is confident, sexy and comfortable in her own skin. She has no issues with anyone…except herself. With her “rules” in place, Em has closed off the one part of herself that is vulnerable, her heart. Does she sleep around? Yes. Does she have a reputation because of it? Of course. Does she really care? Nope…until the morning she met “motorcycle boy” as she was coming out of the frat house. He changes something and Em fights it with everything she is; but is it enough?

“Your voice is a little like cocaine. You could bottle that stuff up and sell it. You could make a killing…Can I pay you just to talk to me all day?”

Sexy Jaxon Riley…um, yeah. Hot body, dark hair, piercing blue eyes, voice like velvet caressing your skin when he speaks…oh, he plays football AND rides a

motorcycle. *faints* Transferring to school for his junior year, reunited with his twin brother, Jace (YES! he has a twin), and best friend, Cole; Jax is the male counterpart to Em. No attachments, no responsibilities, no clue his world is about to be rocked by the sexy D-cups limping out of the frat house doing the walk of shame with so much confidence, he can’t move. This is going to be fun… she and her sister, Quinn, live next door!

So, when does a casual friendship turn into something more? After classes together, long conversations, study dates, frat parties, movie nights and football games, they somehow become closer than Emerson has ever thought possible; Jaxon is her best friend. Can they still be friends if she breaks her rules? Em doesn’t do relationships, but Jax is different and she’s terrified.

“It’s not so easy when you care about them is it?” Quinn squeezed my hand back. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I said avoiding her eyes. “Whatever, your heart knows what I’m talking about, and one day your brain will catch up.”

Relationships between two damaged people can be tricky, and at times, downright impossible. The emotion between Jaxon and Emerson was uncanny. With her past constantly reminding her that relationships fail her, my heart broke. Being young and so hardened to the possibilities of a great love is a tough pill to swallow. Jaxon has to be strong enough and patient enough with her if they ever stand a chance.

“This is exactly why I never wanted to go down this road in the first place, why I made rules…” “You’re driving me f**king insane. The only reason I can stand coming to every single one of these parties is because some crazy-ass masochistic side of me needs to know when you come out of those bedrooms that you’re still okay. But every time I watch you walk up those stairs with some new douche bag, I beg Cole to stop me from going up there, pounding that guy into the ground and throwing you over my shoulder because I know you would be pissed at me…Emerson, tell me what you want…tell me that you want me,” he whispered. “I want you.” Always. “Only me?” “Only you.” Has there ever been anyone else?”

Without meaning to, Em falls in love…and it destroys her. My heart stopped, but I couldn’t stop reading. I had to know if it all worked out in the end. Emerson finally breaks her rules; and Jaxon…

“It’s impossible. I can’t be your friend. It hurts too much. If I’m ruining you, then you’ve destroyed me. I finally trusted someone enough to love and you proved that all along it wasn’t worth it.” This book wrecked me in such a good way. Emerson and Jaxon’s story is one I will forever remember and read over and over again…

“You’re my heart. You don’t walk away from your heart.”

That’s where I’ve placed them, my heart.
