A storm is coming . . . Locked behind bars for three years, Shadow did his time, quietly waiting for the magic day when he could return to Eagle Point, Indiana. A man no longer scared of what tomorrow might bring, all he wanted was to be with Laura, the wife he deeply loved, and start a new life. But just days before his release, Laura and Shadow’s best friend are killed in an accident. With his life in pieces and nothing to keep him tethered, Shadow
accepts a job from a beguiling stranger he meets on the way home, an enigmatic man who calls himself Mr. Wednesday. A trickster and rogue, Wednesday seems to know more about Shadow than Shadow does himself. Life as Wednesday’s bodyguard, driver, and errand boy is far more interesting and dangerous than Shadow ever imagined—it is a job that takes him on a dark and strange road trip and introduces him to a host of eccentric characters whose fates are mysteriously intertwined with his own. Along the way Shadow will learn that the past never dies; that everyone, including his beloved Laura, harbours secrets; and that dreams, totems, legends, and myths are more real than we know. Ultimately, he will discover that beneath the placid surface of everyday life a storm is brewing—an epic war for the very soul of America—and that he is standing squarely in its path. Relevant and prescient, American Gods has been lauded for its brilliant synthesis of “mystery, satire, sex, horror, and poetic prose” (Michael Dirda, Washington Post Book World) and as a modern phantasmagoria that “distils the essence of America” (Seattle Post-Intelligencer). It is, quite simply, an outstanding work of literary imagination that will endure for generations.
Reviews This is a story about a man searching for answers and peace after a few rocky years and numerous horrendous situations. He finds mythology and intreage in his journey around America and is changed forever. It is a wonderfully developed metaphore on life and belief, as the author drives you down many roads at the same time yet ending up at a decisive destination. At times reading like poetry, the writing is descriptive and beatiful, and at times descriptive and disturbing. A brilliantly moving story that left me bitter when I had finnished it-I wanted to read more. Very entertaining and edifying. _____________________________________________________________ Gaiman pulls off a near perfect mixture of American road-trip, kitch, mythology, and fascinating characterization in this novel. This book is witty with a wry sensability and above all a really likeable character who just happens to be an ex-con on-the-run who really just wants to be left alone. I loved this book and can't wait to read other Gaiman novels. _____________________________________________________________ Wow. I mean seriously, Wow. Being a big fan of mythology of all sorts, this book truly took to me quite well. The main character is somewhat dry, but I think that complements the rest of the colorful characters very nicely. The dialogue is amusing, the story is fantastic in every sense of the word, and it is quite thrilling. I couldn't stop reading it. It helps to know a bit of Norse
Mythology when going into the book, because you can see the mythos paralells ahead of time. Before reading the book, you should at least familiarize yourself with some of the names and roles of some of the Norse gods so you aren't lost in the last 100 or so pages. _____________________________________________________________ This book sucked me in from page 1. I had to keep reading to find out where I was being taken with each page. Shadow was such an awesome character that many times I felt like I knew this guy. Gaiman shows us his mastery yet again. _____________________________________________________________ This is one of the most highly inventive and fun novels I have read in a long time. It is rare that, while reading a book, I don't look up its history or plot while reading it. Often I do these things because I am fascinated by the book and I want to know more, but with Gaiman's book, I really wanted to be surprised. I know that this is a normal frame of mind for most people but spoilers have never really bothered me but with "American Gods," it did. For once, I didn't want to know what happened, I wanted Gaiman's story to unfold before me and it turned out to be amazing. I had read a couple Gaiman books before this and, while I liked them, they were never more than a 'like' but with this book I fell in love with Gaiman. I cannot express how much I really loved this work but I have recommend it to a number of friends since and they all have come to my same conclusion. I don't want to over-hype the book but I did love the book and I count it amongst my favorites. I hope my review will persuade you to as well.
