Why do we have August bank holiday?

The bank holidays were ďŹ rst introduced by the Bank Holidays Act of 1871, which designated four holidays in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and ďŹ ve in Scotland.

The August bank holiday was introduced as a way of giving workers a last chance to enjoy summer.

Launched by Liberal poli.cian Sir John Lubbock in 1871, Britons have enjoyed the public holiday for almost 150 years.

Un.l 1971 the holiday was set to the ďŹ rst Monday of August, but was changed as it clashed with the tradi.onal summer two weeks shut down.

In 2008 she completed the Post Graduate Diploma - Community Pharmaceu.cal Health Care with the University of Brighton. North Devon Health Care Trust has been working with the South West Academic Health Science Network to pilot a three-day quality ambassador training programme at NDHT. The programme has been designed to develop the capability and capacity of sta to improve quality and pa.ent safety across the Trust.

Congratula ons to Jenny Stevens—Mental Health First Aider Jenny a ended Mental Health First Aid training and now is able to provide support to sta at NDHT. Just like physical ďŹ rst aid training, the course gave her a deeper understanding of mental health and the factors that can aect people’s wellbeing, prac.cal skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues, conďŹ dence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress and enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening and knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to appropriate support. h ps://mhfaengland.org/

Did you know? If any of your residents are admi ed to North Devon District Hospital there is a support cafĂŠ for those living with Demen a and their carers.

SWASFT update: new process for managing calls from healthcare professionals In addi.on to providing a response to emergency 999 calls, South Western Ambulance Service NHS Founda.on Trust (SWASFT) also responds to urgent requests from healthcare professionals.

The whole of the NHS is facing the challenge of increasing demand and SWASFT is working to ensure that the ďŹ nite amount of ambulance resources is used in the best way, so that the pa.ents with the most urgent needs get the quickest response.

Following feedback from clinicians, SWASFT will be introducing a new process for managing healthcare professional calls within ambulance control rooms.

The new process aims to ensure: •

Easier process for healthcare professionals, with ques.ons designed to be er determine the most appropriate response.

•

Equity of response for all seriously ill or injured pa.ents, irrespec.ve of whether a member of the public or healthcare professional calls the ambulance service. For the ďŹ rst .me, the number and .meliness of response to healthcare professional calls will be reported separately, so that performance can be be er monitored.

•

Recogni.on that in certain situa.ons, a healthcare professional may require immediate clinical assistance in order to make a life-saving interven.on, in addi.on to ambulance transporta.on.

•

Obstetric emergencies get the required category priority response.

Alterna.ve transport op.ons are iden.ďŹ ed where available and clinically suitable.

The new system is being introduced during late July 2019, and you will no.ce a dierence in the ques.ons that you are asked.

The new system asks healthcare professionals to detail the clinical presenta on and requirements of their pa.ent. Call takers will use an electronic decision support tool (developed by clinicians) to gather informa.on about your pa.ent, to determine the most appropriate clinical level of response and .me frame. You will be advised of the suggested response and will, of course, s.ll have an opportunity to request a higher response, if in your clinical judgement, one is required.

Would you be interested in hos ng a student who has an interest in working in Health and Social Care, during their school’s work experience week?

Northern Devon Healthcare Trust is commi ed to securing the future workforce in the NHS and health & social care. Currently we oer a one week work experience week for year 10 school students between March—July. This is consistently oversubscribed and we were wondering if we could extend our oer with your support. Students complete an applica.on form, are shortlisted and interviewed to secure a place on our programme. However there are many students who, having been interviewed, do not secure a place as we are limited to 30 places.

If you would be happy to host a student for a week during their school’s planned work experience week, you could be assured they have already undertaken some work to secure a work experience placement and had an interview. This process gives you the opportunity to promote Health and Social Care as a career op.on which, with the current skills shortages, is vital to ensure the future care of our pa.ents/ residents.

To make it easier for you to understand what we need to know when you no.fy us and to help us capture addi.onal, more detailed informa.on we are adding addi.onal prompts to the word versions of the following no.ďŹ ca.on forms in the addi.onal informa.on ďŹ eld:

We are currently working on a major project which is intended to improve statutory no.ďŹ ca.ons forms and guidance in rela.on to:

We are making these interim changes to some of the exis.ng no.ďŹ ca.on changes whilst this larger project is underway. This project aims to reduce the impact on you telling us about incidents that do not meet the threshold for a statutory no.ďŹ ca.on, and removes the need for us to ask for further informa.on rela.ng to an already submi ed form. Improved intelligence at an earlier stage will ensure we are assessing risks within provider services appropriately.

This is a reminder that with eect from 1 October 2018, Devon Partnership Trust changed the way we support care homes who look aRer residents who may be experiencing behavioural and psychological distress associated with demen.a (Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Demen.a).

The aim of this change is to enable the Trust to con.nue to deliver prompt, eďŹƒcient, and comprehensive services to care home residents and ensure they receive support to help op.mise residents’ mental health and wellbeing. We will work with care homes to create an individual Support Plan to maximise a resident’s independence and help manage any behaviours associated with their demen.a presenta.on.

However, if a resident has poten.al physical medical needs then please ensure that their GP is contacted in the ďŹ rst instance.

Care homes can contact the team to discuss referral directly via telephone - 01237 427711. Note that any calls logged aRer 2pm may not be dealt with un.l the following day.

We are looking forward to working with care homes in this way and believe together we can make signiďŹ cant improvements to residents’ quality of life and personal experience. We hope this will help care homes feel be er supported in caring for residents.

The Urgent Care Nursing Team The Urgent Care Nursing Team is an expert resource to pa.ents, families and other professionals.

We are commi ed to delivering the best quality pa.ent care. Due to a large increase in pa.ent referrals we will be assessing pa.ent on the telephone to ensure they are seen within an appropriate .me scale.

If a visit is not deemed urgent we will be educa.ng pa.ents and cares over the telephone and then referring onto the day team.

Following advice from Tissue Viability we have looked at the way The Urgent Care Team manages reports received with regards to pressure damage. If pa.ent is in a care home and a visit is not clinically indicated we will be providing educa.on on how to reduce risk of deteriora.on and referring on to the appropriate team.
