Billboard series unveiled A new series of billboards is being displayed in central and eastern North Dakota. The billboards are part of the Comprehensive Statewide Higher-Level Ethanol Blends Marketing Campaign. The purpose of the billboards is to educate North Dakota motorists, specifically flex fuel vehicle owners, on the benefits of higher-level ethanol blends, such as E20 and E30. The billboards drive motorists to the website www.runflexfuel.com where they can learn more about ethanol and its benefits. Other campaign efforts include a series of statewide radio segments and continued work with fuel retailers and auto dealers to educate flex fuel vehicle owners. The campaign was recently featured in Ethanol Producer Magazine. Thanks to the campaign sponsors: North Dakota Ethanol Council, North Dakota Corn Utilization Council, American Lung Association of North Dakota, North Dakota Renewable Energy Council and North Dakota Department of Commerce Office of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency.

NDEC to focus on E15 and DDGS The NDEC recently approved its 2013-2014 work plan. Its priorities for the upcoming year include making E15 available in North Dakota and increasing the use of DDGS within the state. Subcommittees in each area are being formed to advance the initiatives, which will require collaboration with the state’s fuel retailers and livestock producers. If you are interested in participating on either of the subcommittees, contact Deana at 701-355-4458.

EmPower Commission discusses study The ND EmPower Commission, which is made up of representatives from each of North Dakota’s energy sectors, met on July 9. Randy Schneider, NDEPA president, represents the ethanol industry on the Commission. Included on the agenda was discussion on the value-added market opportunity study that was authorized by the 2013 Legislature. The Legislature provided $500,000 to look into opportunities in both traditional and renewable energy. The Commission agreed to focus on natural gas for the traditional portion and ethanol for the renewable portion of the study. A request for proposals is currently being developed for each portion of the study, with its completion scheduled for summer 2014.

Hearings held on RFS Growth Energy CEO Tom Buis and Renewable Fuels Association’s President and CEO Bob Dinneen represented the ethanol industry by testifying before the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Energy and Power during the July 23-24 hearing on the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS). Buis and Dinneen used this as an opportunity to present the facts about the RFS and defend it in front of critical policymakers. Buis’s testimony is available via video, and Dinneen’s testimony can be read here.
