North Dakota Dental FOUNDATION 2021 ANNUAL REPORT

One of our board members Carla went to the Dental Assisting National Board headquarters in Chicago to create the first high school dental assisting curriculum in the nation! The first cohort of students completed this class at Dickinson High School this year. We are interested in spreading “Bright Futures in Dentistry” high school curriculum to every high school in North Dakota in the next 5 years. This year we’re looking to start in Williston, Bismarck, & Minot.
"I would like to send Bright Futures in Dentistry a sincere thank you for your encouragement and support, it truly makes all the difference in the world! I am grateful to have a career that is also my passion and to have found myself in a workplace that I can now call home." -April Facer, Chairsidetrained registered dental assistant at Bridging the Dental gap in Bismarck, ND and a Bright Futures in Dentistry Scholarship Recipient.
Bright Futures in Dentistry is a program of the North Dakota Dental Foundation, North Dakota Dental Association, and the North Dakota State College of Science. It was created in 2017 to address the dental workforce shortage needs in North Dakota. Specifically to increase the number of licensed dental assistants. Since 2017, it has increased licensed dental assistants by 23%. It does this through three ways:
1.Promote career to job seekers (social media advertising)
2.Encourage chairside-trained dental assistants pass the DANB to become a qualified or registered dental assistant and become licensed in North Dakota.
3.Connect dental practices to interested high school students (career fairs)
To help us spread this curriculum we’ve contracted with a consulting firm in Bismarck. They are working to us connect with the right people in each community to spread this curriculum and learn about additional funding opportunities that may be connected. On April 29th, the North Dakota Legislature provided $70 million in grant monies for the creation of career academies and to expand existing programs in career & technical education. On May 3rd, the Minot City Council approved $8 million for the purchase of a building from Trinity Hospital to be used as a Career & Technical Center.
In addition to focusing on college and high school aged youth, we’re interested in also going younger. The North Dakota Dental Foundation has pledged a 5 year gift to Gateway to Science in Bismarck, ND for their new children’s science museum going up mid-2022 along the Missouri River in Bismarck, ND. A company called Blue Rhino has designed a custom “Big Mouth” exhibit replete with big toothbrushes and floss for kids to learn health oral habits with. Table-top dental exhibits will also be used in their traveling exhibits that reach all corners of North Dakota. We aim to capture the attention and imagination of youth to meet future workforce demands and promote good oral health habits.
The current rate for taking the DANB exam is $450. 100% of funds given to this program go directly into building a vibrant dental workforce in North Dakota. We couldn’t do this without the support of our generous donors. If you’re interested in supporting this program or benefitting from it, visit: brightfuturesindentistry.com.
