THE LESSON: READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the Second

Book of Zechariah Chapter 12 beginning at the 8th verse. On that day the LORD will put a shield about the inhabitants of Jerusalem so that the feeblest among them on that day shall be like David, and the house of David shall be like God, like the angel of the LORD, at their head.  And on that day I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.   "And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of compassion and supplication, so that, when they look on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn. "On that day there shall be a fountain opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to cleanse them from sin and uncleanness. Reader: ALL:

Here ends the Reading. Thanks be to God.

Prayer: "I love You, O my God, and my only desire is to love You until the last breath of my life. I love You, O my infinitely lovable God, and I would rather die loving You, than live without loving You. I love You, Lord and the only grace I ask is to love You eternally....My God, if my tongue cannot say in every moment that I love You, I want my heart to repeat it to You as often as I draw breath." - Saint John Vianney. !

THE EPISTLE Reader: A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter to the Galatians Chapter 3 beginning at the 23rd verse Now before faith came, we were confined under the law, kept under restraint until faith should be revealed. So that the law was our custodian until Christ came, that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a custodian; for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.   And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise.  Reader: ALL:

Here ends the Reading. Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL Gospeller: The Lord be with you ALL: And also with you Gospeller: A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke ALL: Glory to Christ our Saviour. At that time, it happened that as Jesus was praying alone the disciples were with him; and he asked them, "Who do the people say that I am?" And they answered, "John the Baptist; but others say, Eli'jah; and others, that one of the old prophets has risen." And he said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" And Peter answered, "The Christ of God." But he charged and commanded them to tell this to no one,  saying, "The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised." And he said to all, "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake, he will save it. Gospeller The Gospel of Christ. ALL Praise to Christ our Lord.

From the Rector’s Notebook: Greetings:

JUNE 23, 2013

By Canon Noel A. Burke

I have had two interesting experiences this past week, firstly I was re-elected to the post of 2nd Vice Chairman of the Barbados Christian Council (BXC) and secondly I was appointed and attended my first meeting of the National NonCommunicable Disease Commission. Serving on these bodies gives the opportunity to assist in the development of our lovely island home in terms of religion, spirituality and health, all of which go together in a trinitarian pattern. We must be convinced that the church has something significant to say to the society. Our church must be actively involved in the world and can never shrink from it or surrender even in the face of difficulty or challenge. At times, even from within, it seems as though there are forces that would cause us to move away from our common mission and the goals that we have set under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. I have been reading a book this past week entitled “Leadership and Listening: Spiritual Foundations for Church Governance, in which the author Donald E. Zimmer made the point that over the years ideas adopted from the age of enlightenment along with the outlook from political, social and cultural mores have had their impact on the work of the church.

Truly the contemporary church is rooted in both the Kingdom of God and the systems and cultures of the prevailing age. Honest critical assessment and objective examination of the the processes and structures are vital in the context of church; of course this must be done in love - always love. Unfortunately even within the church one cannot escape the illwill, spite, hatred and the commitment to destruction that is often found in the world. The darkness of anonymity, innuendo and false suggestion can seek to pull down those who make every effort to bring Jesus Christ and the proclamation of the Good News to the public, political and social context in which we live. The willingness of societal organisations to accept and print without critical analysis and truth seeking, adds to the evil that can create distrust even within the Body of Christ. We have the the theological and spiritual view that the church to which we belong is none other than the House of God and the Gate of Heaven, (Genesis 28:17), and that personal attack, for whatever reason will neither divert nor distract from God’s mission. In the midst of whatever pain may be caused in this or any congregation let us recall the words of Jesus And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Matthew 16:18 May God give us his blessing. !

Provincial Statement on Same-Sex Unions April 25, 2013, Continued from last week

Additionally, there is the passage of legislation among a number of metropolitan nations, whereby marriage is defined as a human right in which any two persons may be joined, inclusive of persons of the same sex. The “marriage” of persons of the same sex is justified as a human right, on the basis of marital equality with heterosexual unions. While we acknowledge that there is a diversity of family patterns within our Caribbean region, these have been understood by our people to be between a man and a woman, whether defined in terms of the natural order of creation or on the basis of religious beliefs, which see these grounded in the purpose of God. We reaffirm marriage as “a creation ordinance, a gift of God in creation and a means of His grace. Marriage, defined as a faithful, committed, permanent and legally sanctioned relationship between a man and a woman, is central to the stability and health of human society. It continues to provide the best context for the raising of children”. (1) Characteristic of our patterns of cohabitation and family life is the notion that such unions are based on a relationship between a man and a woman. The idea of such unions being constituted by persons of the same sex is, therefore, totally unacceptable on theological and cultural grounds. Continued next week !

Rudyard Kipling If If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don't deal in lies, Or being hated, don't give way to hating, And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream -- and not make dreams your master; If you can think -- and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two imposters just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools; If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!" If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with kings -- nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And -- which is more -- you'll be a Man, my son! http://www.poetryloverspage.com/poets/kipling/if.html#. !
