Boarders without Borders

Nicole Yip

boarders without borders

Boarders without Borders intends to create temporary subsidized housing in the core of downtown Toronto for those recovering from mental illnesses. For example: those recovering from alcohol or substance abuse, anxiety disorders, PTSD, and schizophrenia. Often medication relieves symptoms affecting the individual, however it does not help them find a job and be in effective social relationships. People with mental illnesses are more likely to be stigmatized, owing to the fear and misunderstanding when they are not part of the community. Boarders without Borders addresses these issues by creating several public programs, allowing for the individual to rehabilitate themselves and engage with the public.

The intention of this project was to create spaces within a volume that could then be occupied. The volume would merge seamlessly with the ground to create the effect that the volume was emerging out of the ground plane; almost as if the ground plane had been warped. Each pod would have a curved roof covering. The roof would have an alternating gap and piece of material. This would allow for different lighting conditions, as well as views from the interior of the pod. The pods would also be highlighted with a wood seating platform. The volumes have an opening at either end so that it does not entirely enclose the user. The wood platforms would also serve as an indicator for the shape of the pod.

Rhino model The model was created within Rhino, which was then brought into Grasshopper for it to be “sliced and prepped for a laser cutting file. The volume began as a half-sphere, which was then divided into four quadrants. Then the half-sphere and curve along the base were blended together to create a smooth descent into the ground. Once that was complete I could scale these two surfaces to the

desired shape/size/height of the final pod. Four of these oval pods were created, which would then be merge with a cylindrical base. Ovals, would then be punched out of the base in order to insert the wood platforms for the pods. Then, the volume would be brought into Grasshopper, where I would slice the object vertically and lay them out onto the plane.

two photos show how lighting conditions can change depending on the angle of the light.

nodes + tubes

This project hoped to address the endless possibilities that nodes could accomplish. The focus began at the node itself, creating a piece that could be developed by anyone and provide the greatest structural strength. Through multiple explorations, it was discovered that creating a pipe node rather than a ball node would allow for a greater number of connections within the system. The node would also be adaptable to use with a PVC pipe or a copper pipe, allowing for the node to be used anywhere in the world where these resources would be readily available.

box truss vs. triangulated truss

Nodes + Tubes

The main problem with structure, looking at the box truss, was that it was neither a safe nor efficient structure. Through triangulation we were able to create both a safe and efficient structure, which would allow for more configurations of the structure. This led us to creating a node, which consisted of 13 axis.

Separated shells to increase contact with acid bath and allow for the majority of structural support to be removed

pavilion Originally, the intention of this particular node was to uphold a pavilion. However, through an exploration of ideas it was discovered that this node would prove to benefit the user beyond just pavilions. The capabilities of it would be endless, in which it could be used to construct a lamp, a table, or even a stage itself.

master plan: balance those ecologies!

Nicole Yip

*in progress

In this project we had create a new master plan for what was formally an exhibition and entertainment complex. Central to this project is the idea of balancing human and natural ecologies to create a landscape in which the two work together to produce its ultimate form. The human portion of the project is focused on education, recreation and research, and the natural portion is based on restoration, reconstruction and rehabilitation. Assessing commonalities between these focuses helped to develop the program of the project.

Balance Those Ecologies!

By attempting to balance human and natural ecologies, this project aims to create harmony between the two, and works to shape the landscape together.

Balance Those Ecologies!

The project works in a gradient of more-natural to less natural spaces, where the East Island contains a landscape rehabilitation project, the central area contains a meeting space and the West Island focuses on ecological research. The circulation, which is central to the project, not only serves to delineate areas within the project, but also works with the buildings to determine the future form of the landscape. These contain systems by which the landscapes are monitored and attended to if needed.
