CASE STUDY - North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust Services provided: • Car park management; • Domestic cleaning; • Helpdesk; • Portering; • Security services.

What was the Trust looking for? An FM provider that understood the complications of providing services in a busy hospital environment, with a reputable track record.

How did we help? With customer care in mind, we tasked our highly-trained portering team with a range of duties to ensure the hospital ran smoothly, creating more time for staff to concentrate on the well-being of their patients. We also developed a challenging work programme using the high quality and innovative Vermop Microfiber system to deep clean the Trust with minimal disruption to staff, patients and relatives. Through good communication and teamwork, the Trust’s managers and infection control teams were able to adapt the programme based on patients’ needs while maintaining the same degree of efficiency.

Lean Six Sigma – Innovation MITIE Style MITIE’s expert team is revolutionising operational efficiency in Facilities Management Our highly specialised Lean Environment team has introduced a leaner, greener and more efficient approach to cleaning that has a direct impact on your estate. This is based on Lean Six Sigma, the engineered process that is grounded on removing waste, whether that’s materials, resources, people, energy, or time. Lean Six Sigma also helps remove harmful environmental wastes. One of the ways in which we save time and resources is by process mapping ‘peaks and troughs’ in working practices, getting rid of the downtime that occurs during the troughs. Downtime could involve, for instance, walking between wards or stores or going to another site on the same floor. Instead of just walking to another site our people clean along the way, thus turning that downtime into another peak or productive time. We take CAD drawings of your buildings and plot the best and most efficient routes. We do this by utilising our own bespoke lean software called Lean IT and building known productivities into these new routes. It’s not enough just to create new routes using lean IT. Everyone on site who works for MITIE is trained in the new techniques involved. We have set up our own Lean Six Sigma Academy which trains our own employees in Lean Six Sigma, including recognised Foundation, Yellow and Green belt qualifications. CASE STUDY - Rampton Hospital, Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust Services provided: • Planned and unplanned maintenance of M&E services; • Building fabric; • Building installations; • Grounds maintenance; • Operation and maintenance of sewage and water treatment plants and boiler house.

What was the Trust looking for? The Trust wanted to be confident they could achieve annual efficiency savings without compromising quality of service.

How did we help? Providing a maintenance service within this environment presented an almost unique challenge, with many of the complexities of an acute hospital combined with the security measures found in a prison. Routine maintenance tasks typically take twice as long and cost up to 30% more than in a normal hospital. CASE STUDY - Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Services provided: • D  eveloping and operating a stateof-the-art energy centre.

What the Trust was looking for? The Trust needs to upgrade its existing low carbon energy provision on its expanding medical and biomedical campus, which includes the world renowned Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

How are we helping? We’re preferred bidder to develop a new energy centre for the campus over a 25-year contract term. We will also reduce on-site energy demand throughout the hospital. The energy centre will save almost 30,000 tonnes of carbon a year, surpassing the Trust’s sustainability targets by 27%. This means a 47% cut in carbon emissions and more than a 50% reduction in grid electricity and gas consumption over the contract term. The new energy centre will also provide low-carbon heating, hot water and electricity for Addenbrooke’s and Rosie hospitals. The centre will use advanced, innovative technology including a brand new incinerator, a highly efficient RollsRoyce combined heat and power plant and biomass boilers that use sustainable wood chip as fuel source.

CASE STUDY - St. George’s Healthcare NHS Trust Services provided: • Catering; • Domestic cleaning; • Helpdesk; • Vending.

What was the Trust looking for? An experienced FM provider with dedicated and motivated employees to deliver improvements to the hospital’s overall care, environment and amenities. This included significant investment in the provision of patient, staff and hospitality catering services.

How did we help? We carried out a full refurbishment of the staff and visitor restaurant, including a brand new servery, separate coffee shop and new seating area. As a result of our innovative re-design, we were also able to hand back much needed space for alternative use.

Highlights: • W  e employed a catering development specialist and a dietician to add value to the existing catering offer; • W  e extended our current remit by taking full responsibility for the procurement of all patient meals; • W  e added all food and drink vending services and the supply of domestic consumables to our scope of service, creating significant cost savings for the Trust.
