'YGVGOXULGIZUXYRO\OTMOT4K]?UXQNU]JOJ_U[GTJ_U[XN[YHGTJJKIOJKZU]KJOT'XQGTYGY% I’m originally from Arkansas, born in Little Rock and raised in Rogers. Jay is from Seattle. With friends and family all over the country, we decided Arkansas was a central gathering place. Since this was the first time many of them had ever been to the state, I wanted to showcase what I love about it.

=NGZ]KXKYUSKULZNUYKKRKSKTZY% A warm and easygoing attitude, natural beauty, flowers and fields. We chose Pratt Place Inn for the ceremony and its barn for the reception for that reason—it’s a mix of classic and casual. The food we served at the reception was regional as well, like catfish fingers, pulled pork sandwiches, fried dill pickles, and a carving station with beef and chicken. Plus we had a local bluegrass band play for part of the reception.

:NKZGHRKYKZZOTMYGZZNKXKIKVZOUTIKXZGOTR_NG\KZNGZIRGYYOIIGY[GRLKKR The burlap runners on top of red tablecloths looked great in the barn, with jars of flowers set on each table and paper lanterns suspended above at different heights for soft lighting. My goal for the flowers was for them to look as if we had walked through the field outside the barn and snatched them up, and then put them in mason jars as vases. I carried red carnations in my bouquet, because that’s the first kind of flower Jay brought me when we were dating. Shirley’s Flowers pulled it all together, and came up with the floral concept for the arbor, which became the focal point of the ceremony.

2UUQOTMGZZNKOSGMKUL_U[GTJ0G_OTLXUTZULZNKGXHUX]KIGT²ZNKRVH[Z]UTJKX]NGZIG[YKJZNK RG[MNZKX It was a bit impromptu, and Jay’s reaction was priceless. At the end of my vows, I told Jay that I promised to always laugh at his jokes as long as they’re funny. All of our family and friends know how often he tells jokes, so it was a shared moment they found funny as well.

9ZGTJOTM[TJKXZNKGXHUX_U[XJXKYYYVUZROMNZY_U[XXKJYNUKY]NOIN]UXQYU]KRR]OZNZNKYKZZOTM My mother found them for me at Dillard’s and they were luckily a great fit. Red is a favorite of mine—my engagement ring is a ruby. I even love red velvet cake, and we had two layers of it plus vanilla and chocolate in the tiered wedding cake.

.U]JOJ_U[JKIOJKUTGZKGRKTMZNJXKYY% That length seemed fun and lighthearted to me, special but not too formal. I couldn’t find the dress I was envisioning, so I had it made by a designer I know in New York. But the most practical reason for that length is that we made our getaway after the reception on a motorcycle. Jay has always owned one, and it seemed fitting that we rent one to drive off on that night. 28 fall/winter weddings 2010

All of the Harding women have worn the pearl bracelet on their wedding day and it was really special to wear it as my “something old.” The shoes were one of the first things I chose; they’re Christian Louboutin, and I found them even before the dress.

/TGJJOZOUTZU_U[XHR[KYNUKYZNKXKIKVZOUTNGRR OYJKIQKJOTHR[KLRU]KXY.U]JOJ_U[INUUYKZNK IURUXVGRKZZK% Buddy and I began seriously talking about marriage when I was living in St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. My roommate and I began to plan our dream weddings when we were working there. I wanted a beach wedding, but I wanted it to be in Little Rock because home and family are so very important to both Buddy and me. So instead of a beach location, we tried for the airy and effortless feel of the beach. Using my favorite flower, the blue hydrangea, with other flowers in shades of blue and purple, tied in an ocean feel to the beach theme. We worked with Tipton Hurst on the concept, and they executed it beautifully.

:NKHR[KGTJIXKGSIURUXVGRKZZKOYYUKRKMGTZGTJ ZNKIGTJRKROMNZGTJJXGVOTMOTZNKXKIKVZOUTNGRR GJJYUSKJXGSG Simple but with some very dramatic details was our goal. Dramatic from the full length cathedral train on my veil and the simple drama of my gown, to the reception with a canopy of georgette fabric with candles and flowers lining the entryway, to all of the walls draped in ivory fabric, to the tall, beautiful—and delicious—cake, to the towering floral arrangements, to the 12-foot-tall draped tent outside, to the eight-foot-long lighted bar inside with the large “H” ice sculpture.

:NGZIGQKJUKYRUUQJKROIOU[YGRRYO^RG_KXYULOZ The cake caught people’s attention when they first entered. It was white cake with cream cheese icing, covered in Belgian white chocolate curls. The groom’s cake had two square layers of chocolate with marbleized chocolate curl straws. And we had blue Waterford crystal glasses for our toast.

4U]ZNGZ_U[²\KNGJG_KGXZUXKLRKIZUTZNKK\KTOTM]NGZGJ\OIK]U[RJ_U[VGYYGRUTMZUUZNKXHXOJKYZUHK% My wedding coordinator, Dawne Vandiver, advised me to try to find one particular moment that I wanted to be sure to remember and focus on it. For me, it was when I was walking down the aisle with my father; I felt so calm and Buddy was waiting for me. I’ll remember that feeling forever. Paying attention to that special moment was a great piece of advice. 30 fall/winter weddings 2010

=NGZOTYVOXKJZNKHXOMNZIURUXVGRKZZKGTJ\OTZGMKKRKSKTZY% I originally wanted a rustic woodland look to complement the location at Garvan Woodland Gardens, but then I was naturally drawn to the vintage silhouette of my dress and went from there. The color palette was Jim’s idea. I’d driven him crazy for weeks suggesting new color schemes, so he finally designed the invites with a palette he chose himself. I think he nailed it! After we decided on Hot Springs and learned about its history of gangsters and social clubs, Jim wanted the stationery to evoke that aesthetic of marquee signs and tuxedos. The pink helped to modernize and energize the look. The dahlias were hand-drawn, and then we repeated them in our table settings and on the cake. ,RU]KXYYKKSKJZUZGQKIKTZKXYZGMKKYVKIOGRR_UTZNKIGQK Flowers were a natural design choice for our botanical garden ceremony and vintage-glamour aesthetic. We put together the centerpieces ourselves, but in the whirlwind of events it became clear we wouldn’t be able to do justice to the other arrangements as planned. Hot Springs Florist & Gifts came through like a dream with a beautiful mix of pink and white roses for the bouquets, boutonnieres and corsages. I found the idea for the cake on The bright pink dahlias make a strong enough statement without needing much else. The cake was red velvet too, which added another pop of color to contrast the white frosting. /YZNGZGTNKOXRUUSHXUUINGZZGINKJZU_U[XHU[W[KZ%It isn’t an heirloom, but it is vintage. I am a big lover of vintage, if you can’t tell. I scoured Etsy for vintage rhinestone brooches for the bridesmaids to wear with their silver dresses and picked that one up for myself since it’s reminiscent of wedding rings. I decided to pin it to the bouquet at the last minute.

=KXK_U[XVGXZ_LG\UXYNUSKSGJK% A week before the wedding, we—Jim, my maid-of-honor, her mother and I—made 75 jars of homemade strawberry jam. Jim cut the tags for the jam jars out of watercolor paper and spent a few days before the wedding hand-lettering each guest’s name on the tags. Then we tied the nametags to the jars with ribbon. =NGZSGJK_U[INUUYKZNKRUIGZOUT%Jim and I live in Brooklyn, New York, and our families are in Rhode Island and Texas, so finding a location that would work for all of our family and friends was a challenge. I was born and raised in Arkansas, though, and loved the thought of getting married where I grew up, and visiting Anthony Chapel and Garvan Gardens sealed the deal. We did a tree-planting ritual during our ceremony and had it planted in the gardens so our little tree will be growing in the place we were married for years to come.

I knew that I wanted a fall wedding that would represent Lee and me in every way possible. After the location, the next step was designing the invitations. We wanted our look to be cohesive, so setting the mood with the paper products seemed like the best plan. Kandace Gerber, our graphic designer, incorporated our initials with an apple as a monogram, so we ran with it and tried to incorporate it in as many details as possible.

=NKXKJOJZNKU[ZJUUXIKXKSUT_ZGQKVRGIK%Many of our close friends were married the same year we were, which made finding an original location a little difficult. We wanted something that was special and unique to us, so when Lee mentioned his mother’s backyard on Greers Ferry Lake, I knew it would be perfect. complicated. We’re both from Missouri, but Jared was based in Fayetteville as a recruiter at the time. And we knew we would be moving to California after the wedding. My family and I were traveling around Northwest Arkansas and we visited Eureka Springs and Thorncrown Chapel. I loved the all-glass chapel; it’s so unique and you feel nestled in the woods. We decided that Eureka Springs would be a good location—it would be a destination trip for our friends and family in Missouri and could include our Northwest Arkansas friends as well.

I chose canary yellow dresses for the bridesmaids and the flowers were a mix of red, yellow and blue. Then they lift their swords and the couple moves to the next set of marines and swords and kiss again. When the bride and groom arrive at the last set, the marine behind the bride says a short speech welcoming her to the Marine Corps and then gives her a quick tap with his sword, signifying that she’s officially in.
