Philemon 4/29/12 Postcards from God Notes Brooks McElhenny
Postcards from God "Living out your Faith” The Book of Philemon Philemon, 2 John, 3 John and Jude. Philemon 1:1-3 NLT 1 This letter is from Paul, a prisoner for preaching the Good News about Christ Jesus, and from our brother Timothy. I am writing to Philemon, our beloved co-‐worker, 2 and to our sister Apphia, and to our fellow soldier Archippus, and to the church that meets in your house. 3 May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace. Philemon 1:6-10 NLT 6 And I am praying that you will put into action the generosity that comes from your faith as you understand and experience all the good things we have in Christ. 7 Your love has given me much joy and comfort, my brother, for your kindness has often refreshed the hearts of God’s people. 8 That is why I am boldly asking a favor of you. I could demand it in the name of Christ because it is the right thing for you to do. 9 But because of our love, I prefer simply to ask you. Consider this as a request from me—Paul, an old man and now also a prisoner for the sake of Christ Jesus. 10 I appeal to you to show kindness to my child, Onesimus. I became his father in the faith while here in prison.
Philemon 1:6a NLT And I am praying that you will put into action the generosity that comes from your faith… TRUE FAITH IS ACTIVE NOT PASSIVE • Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you (Luke 6:27) • If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. (Romans 12:18) • And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome (2 Tim. 2:24) • Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. (Rom. 12:21) • Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry (Eph 4:26) • Children, obey your parents (Eph. 6:1) • Be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, (Eph 4:32) • Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. (Phil. 4:6) • Do not judge others (Matt. 7:1) 1. We just like the ways of the world. 2. We just have difficulty doing the right thing. ACTIVE FAITH FUNCTIONS WITH NEW STANDARDS • God’s way is the right way, no matter what the world says • Love is better than hate • People are more important than possessions • Those who receive grace should also extend it to others
• The goal of this life is to prepare for the next life and to bring as many people with us to Heaven as we can. • Do you forgive the one who has slandered you? • Can you be kind to the one who treated you unfairly? • Will you strike back when we have the opportunity to “get even”? “You are not like everyone else, you are a child of the King.” to “taste and see that the Lord is good” is to “taste and see”. LIFE LESSONS FROM PHILEMON 1. There are Consequences to the Choices of Life 2. We All Need Forgiveness for Something 3. God Wants us to Extend the Same Grace We Have Received We are being asked to: • Forgive • Trust • Extend a hand • Start again Live out your faith…
