Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University, The College of Wooster, along with affiliate member Earlham College — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 280 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 23 sports — 11 for men and 12 for women. The 12 women’s sports are among the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic Molly Martorella, Oberlin life, rather than compete

with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the nine school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference. Sixty-three teams from all 23 North Coast sports and all ten members competed in the NCAA post-season during the 2011-12 academic year. The NCAC added Craig Osterbrock, Wittenberg another NCAA Division III swimming championship as Denison claimed the men’s title for the second consecutive season. In addition, Wittenberg claimed the leagues’ first-ever volleyball title and Ohio Wesleyan garnered the second men’s soccer title in league and school history. Conference members have accumulated 65 national championships since the league was formed in February of 1983. In the past academic year, 157 All-America or Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.

WOOSTER VOTED AS PRESEASON FAVORITE FOR 29th NCAC BASEBALL SEASON CLEVELAND -- North Coast Athletic Conference baseball coaches have selected Wooster as the preseason favorite through balloting in the annual preseason coaches’ poll. The Fighting Scots, who captured their 14th NCAC title all-time last spring, earned 96 points and nine of the 10 available first-place votes to finish first in the poll. DePauw, which earned an at-large bid into the 2012 NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament, is projected to finish second in the conference this season after collecting 85 total points, including the final firstplace vote. Ohio Wesleyan finished third in the voting with 79 points, while Wabash and Allegheny rounded out the top five with 67 points and 59 points, respectively. Kenyon was sixth on the poll with 51 points, followed by Denison (39), Wittenberg (38), Oberlin (24) and Hiram (12). Wooster enters the 2013 season with an experienced squad that is primed to make another run at the NCAC Championship. Offensively, the Fighting Scots will be led by junior infielder Eddie Reese (Canfield, OH/Cardinal Mooney) and senior outfielder Johnathan Ray (Columbus, OH/Grandview Hts.). Reese, the 2012 NCAC Baseball Tournament MVP, is the team’s leading returner this spring in four major statistical categories, including batting average (.369), RBI (34), runs scored (37) and doubles (11), while Ray, a 2012 All-NCAC first-team selection, appeared in 44 games last spring and compiled a .364 batting average with nine doubles, six home runs and one triple. Junior right-hander Steve Hagen (Brecksville, OH/ Brecksville-Broadview Hts.), who was named to the 2012 All-NCAC honorable mention squad, will bolster the Fighting Scots’ pitching staff this season after posting a 7-4 record, earning five saves, and compiling an ERA of 3.80 in 71.0 innings pitched last spring. The Fighting Scots will be led by manager Tim Pettorini for the 32nd year in a row. Pettorini, a 10-time NCAC Coach of the Year recipient, enters the 2013 season with an overall record of 1002-376-6 (.726), which makes him just the seventh coach in NCAA Div. III history to surpass 1,000 career victories. Wooster leads all NCAC teams with 14 championships in 28 years, including winning seven of the last 11 titles. Ohio Wesleyan (10), Allegheny (4) and Wabash (1) are the only other teams to capture a title in the history of the league. Allegheny and Wooster shared the inaugural crown in the 1985 season. Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is made up of ten academically selective colleges and universities Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and the College of Wooster, along with affiliate member, Earlham College (field hockey). The NCAC sponsors 23 championship sports, 11 for men and 12 for women.
