Leaving Saturday. Jeff Kolsin, eClub West Guests: Kimberly Smith & Scouts Announcement: Rotarian Manuel Velarde -Madrid Spain attended our club meetings for the past two months. He and Pilar returned home Sat. Manuel expressed his thanks to whole club for their friendship and hospitality. He visited many places in southern California and attended several other Rotary clubs in the area. He stated, however, that NIRC was his “home club” while here. He was impressed with the large shopping centers and churches in Orange County. He and Pilar enjoyed a Balboa Island walk each evening while here. The highlight was the friendships that he developed and he appreciated everything that NIRC provided Fines:Blanca Ocampo as Fine Mistress recognized Cecil for his beach vacation to a small island near the Dominican Republic (by himself!) ; Kerk Lesh was“ratted” for burning a rib dinner prepared for Shannon Burns. Norm Witt celebrated his daughters’ accomplishments (teachers and

lawyers); Blanca recognized the contributions of all the women Rotarians in the club. Speaker: Norm Witt introduced Ken Tudhope, troop leader, to give us an overview of the summer activities of Scout Troop 645, which NIRC sponsors. Ken shared videos of three trips. The first a back pack up Sierras to Mt. Julius Caesar at 13,000 feet. Next Lake Powell with 41 people in two houseboats! The third trip was a hike through a slot canyon in Utah. Scouts obtained an average of five merit badges on these trips; all had Safety and Swimming merit badges to qualify to go on the trip. Troop 645 has 49 members between 11 and 17. Nine are currently preparing to be Eagle Scouts. Rotary Youth Exchange: Bailey Smith introduced his daughter Kimberly who shared her experiences in Rotary Youth Exchange visits to Slovenia and Denmark this past summer. In Slovenia, Kimberly’s group consisted of 10 members from different countries, sponsored by different Slovenian Rotary clubs. They visited different towns each day, went sailing, visited historic cities and spent time on Lake Bled. In Denmark, the group stayed in Camp Copenhagen. Theme was “The Scandinavian Way” which focused on Environment and Democracy. They met with Rotary Clubs in different towns each day.

Len grew up in Miami Beach, Florida. He attended the University of Alabama and Southern College of Optometry.  Before opening his practice in Daytona Beach, Florida, he served as an Air Force Bio-Medical Service Officer for three years.  A long time lecturer on eye-related subjects, he has also lectured on International Terrorism for the past nineteen years.  An avid golfer and skier, he has traveled world-wide with his family and friends, enjoying his other hobby, photography. He has written two plays, Ammy and A Bridge to Elne, on which his first novel is based.
