NBRS HERITAGE Heritage Conservation involves all the processes for dealing with places of heritage value to retain their cultural significance for present & future generations. NBRSARCHITECTURE Heritage has been involved in built heritage conservation activities relating to architecture for more than 30 years. Our highly trained group of accredited specialist professionals with related architectural qualifications can provide the full range of heritage consulting services. Under the direction of Samantha Polkinghorne, a studio of four Senior Heritage Consultants, two Heritage Consultants, and a dedicated Historian. and an historian provide professional heritage services for a variety of clients who are owners and managers of important heritage significant sites throughout NSW and further afield in a range of heritage conservation activities. NBRS adopts the principles of the Australian ICOMOS Burra Charter for places of Cultural Significance and the Guidelines of the

HERITAGE CONSERVATION “Conservation” is identified in the Burra Charter for places of cultural significance as being “all the processes of looking after a place so as to retain its cultural significance” This includes, maintenance, preservation, restoration, reconstruction & adaptation. NBRSARCHITECTURE HERITAGE has demonstrated experience in all of the identified processes of heritage conservation based on recognised principles adopted by government

and as set out in the Burra Charter. The conservation of a significant site involves detailed research of background historical material, a close understanding of historical processes and an ability to determine appropriate policies and documentation of works. HERITAGE MANAGEMENT CONSERVATION PLANNING Conservation Planning is an essential part of managing significant heritage sites, particularly where infill development or change of use is proposed. NBRSARCHITECTURE HERITAGE provide planning advice to a variety of owners of heritage listed properties throughout Australia, but especially in New South Wales and the wider Sydney region. These consultancies are undertaken for government and private clients and involve heritage assessment under the 1977 Heritage Act, preparation of Conservation Management Plans, Heritage Curtilage Studies and Statements of Heritage

Impact. In addition, NBRS prepare Heritage Strategies for government departments, public consultation for large heritage sites and Due Diligence Assessments for corporations. This expertise is often sought by other consultants to complement their activities, in this way NBRS engage in a range of Creative Partnerships to promote appropriate heritage conservation outcomes

ADAPTIVE RE-USE Changing needs in society often result in pressure for alternative uses and activities to be adopted for heritage structures, which allow them to continue to contribute to the community. NBRSARCHITECTURE HERITAGE have been involved in a wide range of projects where the provision of creative advice, based on sound heritage conservation principles, has resulted in exciting new uses for significant heritage items without the loss of intrinsic heritage value. Adaptive re-use has allowed NBRS to respond to the identified heritage values of places in a creative way to support their continued use and care, while meeting the varied requirements of new owners and occupants.

HISTORIC ENVIRONMENT INFILL DEVELOPMENT Design in Context is an essential part of urban development in towns and cities where heritage places and heritage conservation areas are found. NBRSARCHITECTURE HERITAGE provide consultancy services to owners and other consultants on the design of sensitive new developments to fit within significant heritage environments. As each generation adds a layer to the evolving character of historic places, it is important that the result is in an enhancement rather than a loss of heritage value. NBRS not only assist other

designers in understanding the context of a place and achieving appropriate and sympathetic outcomes for infill design but through their own designs for historic sites, respond to the historic context while providing exciting new buildings that meet their client’s needs and expectations. Heritage conservation requires a detailed understanding of the use of traditional materials, building technologies and conservation principles to allow appropriate policies and actions to be recommended for significant heritage projects.

In addition the consultancy has research facilities and specialist historic investigation skills to assist with the provision of advice relating to the planning, documentation and physical work carried out in heritage conservation.

NBRSARCHITECTURE HERITAGE have a considerable knowledge bank relating to historic buildings, materials and environments and work regularly with material scientists, traditional craftsmen and suppliers of specialised materials to achieve practical conservation outcomes.

NBRS are also recognised as providing expert evidence in the NSW Land & Environment Court in the field of heritage conservation to resolve disputes between parties and bring a clear assessment of projects for the consideration of the Court.

HERITAGE DOCUMENTATION. NBRSARCHITECTURE HERITAGE are expert at the recording and documentation of heritage conservation projects. These processes involve the preparation of measured drawings, site histories, archival photographic recording and interpretion strategies. These processes are undertaken in accordance with the guidelines set down by the NSW Heritage Council and are often carried out in response to conditions of approval for development of heritage sites.

INTERPRETATION

MEASURED DRAWINGS

Interpretive planning provides strategies for the presentation of material to interpret former history, uses and events associated with heritage sites is a specialized task that involves identifying target audiences and can involve a number of different media. NBRS have experience in the preparation of Interpretive strategies for a variety of projects and the integration of other specialist input in achieving successful and creative installations.

Measured drawing are sometimes required by approval authorities in recordings of the more significant heritage items. NBRS are experienced in providing this service to satisfy statutory authorities.

Photographic archival records are use to document heritage sites before and after development. These are as a resource for future research and a point of reference for future heritage planning. NBRS have carried out many archival records for projects of varying scale to the satisfaction of the relevant consent authorities, in accordance with the NSW Guidelines.

HERITAGE ARCHITECT – SAMANTHA POLKINGHORNE Samantha joined NBRSARCHITECTURE in 2016 with over eighteen years of professional experience in heritage conservation in Australia, the United Kingdom and the Middle East. Samantha specialises in heritage assessment and documentation of conservation works, providing a range of reports related to the physical and documentary analysis of potential heritage sites at local and state level. As an architect Samantha has experience in producing site advice and implementation for both local and stat listed properties.

Pam participates in a range of professional activities through membership of Australian Institute of Architecture and the International Council on Monuments and Sites, and is interested in sustainable heritage.

SENIOR HERITAGE CONSULTANT – BRAD VALE Brad is a built heritage consultant with 16 years experience in public service and private enterprise. He provides advice to guide the conservation and adaptation of structures with heritage significance. The scale of sites receiving such advice ranges from domestic alterations for the introduction of services, to major development at large and complex sites. Brad has a further 7 years experience in the design and documentation of residential and commercial buildings.

Landscape Architecture is an amalgam of art and science. As designers, Landscape Architects are required to be careful interpreters of the natural and cultural conditions of a site. Our Landscape Studio seeks to create attractive, meaningful, usable, connected and equitable spaces that embody sustainable design principles.

HERITAGE Our Heritage Studio has specialist expertise in providing conservation and heritage planning advice, in addition to adaptive-reuse design. We have experience in the identification and management of built heritage items of all types and periods and in design documentation and project administration of projects for both government and private sectors.

INTERIOR DESIGN Our Interior Design Studio is passionate about achieving a seamless connection between interior design and the whole architectural concept. We deeply consider how interior spaces are used and create innovative design solutions. Our Interior services include space planning, detailed fixture design and the selection of furnishings.

LIFE & CULTURE The Life & Culture Studio is a foundation studio at NBRS. Passionate about human centred design and creating spaces that engage people for civic, religious, cultural and recreational purposes.
